‘Pocket’ neighborhood making debut

Inglenook, a new “pocket” neighborhood, is under development on Carmel’s southside. In the past, Carmel has been a city focused on large, single family homes in standard, subdivision-style developments. Inglenook’s developer, Casey Land of LAND Development & Building, is hoping to change all of that by offering a different neighborhood experience.

Pocket neighborhoods like Inglenook are designed around an intimate, community focus. Homes face into a central green space with walkways, while streets, garages and parking are accessed behind the homes.

Front porches are another key design element and are designed to face one another in small groupings of up to four homes.

Visitor parking is along the neighborhood’s main central street at the base of the community lawn.

“You buy into (Inglenook) knowing that these neighborhoods are a social atmosphere. If you are shy, people will draw you out of your shell here,” Land said.

The homes in Inglenook are smaller than an average Carmel house. Often referred to as cottages, these smaller houses range from 1,100 to 2,200 square feet with an additional 1,000-square-foot basement, as opposed to the 5,000-square-foot homes found in many Carmel neighborhoods. Internationally recognized and award-winning architect Ross Chapin designed both the homes and the neighborhood.

According to Land, efficiency is at the center of Inglenook’s architecture and design.

Efficiency comes into play beyond simple square footage. It is central to a green design philosophy that Land says is focused on energy efficiency and quality above pure quantity.

“I wanted a house where somebody walks into it and it has the same quality of a $750,000 house, (only it's) in a $300,000 house,” Land said.

Houses in Inglenook range in price from $230,000 to $347,000.

Pocket neighborhoods are not an entirely new concept. This type of neighborhood planning was first implemented in New Jersey in 1923. Even Central Indiana has seen some small pocket neighborhoods in the past, including one in Broad Ripple.

Admittedly, though, Land refers to Inglenook as a “beta site” from a modern development standpoint. Right now, the neighborhood is an experiment in a new type of American living, something he will

Fundraiser was just perfect Commentary by Jeff Worrell Perfection. A small but mighty band of women found it last Thursday night. They cajoled, begged and coerced plenty of willing accomplices in our great city to come out and help them.

But they and they alone get credit for absolute perfection in so many different areas. If there were a Nobel Fundraising Prize, these women would be on their way to Oslo.

The annual Taste of Carmel at the Ritz Charles was perfect in so many ways. First, perfection achieved in nurturing a mission to support Orchard Park Elementary, easily the school with the greatest financial challenges but also the school most brimming with heart and soul. It boasts a rich and diverse student population claiming 28 different native languages. It is hard to resist the call of these persistent women who want to see new soccer goals, ORFF musical instruments, art instruction and classroom enrichment programs for the kids at Orchard Park.

The women probably didn’t realize their luck, holding their event in a totally remodeled Ritz Charles. More than a year in the re-making, perfection once again from a well known and trusted old friend turned new with modern, fresh furnishings and a top to bottom overhaul.

I heard several head turning comments, “This isn’t the Ritz Charles I remember.”

Co-Chairs Jennifer Penix and Ann Bernard supported by Susie Harless, Nicole Hackett, Kamila Spink, Katie Lawson, Melinda Miller and Susanna Williams most likely hoped, but could never guarantee, the stars were going to align and come together for the perfect evening.

The perfectionist women behind Taste of Carmel invited Shane Rodimel to croon throughout the eve and they made sure there was enough food to feed 1,000 people from practically every eatery that has even heard of Carmel, let alone does business in Carmel. Not a stomach went away unsatisfied as there was something for every pallet.

As lofty as the amount seemed to be, they achieved their fundraising goal one dollar at a time. The Distinctive Diamond bling ring experience along with the bidding on the silent auction items got them to fundraising perfection. More than 700 people rushed the doors at 6 p.m. and stayed until the very end. Everyone in attendance there to help make sure Orchard Park will have not just one, but a soccer goal at both ends of the field. Like it should be. Just perfect.

City Council March 4 What happened: Mayor commended Street Department with Citizen’s Letter What it means: Mayor Jim Brainard shared a letter of appreciation from citizen Gary Cauble.

Cauble said an icy morning greeted him with clear city streets at the expense of his mailbox.

He contacted the street department, which explained that most mailbox damage is not actually from truck or blade impact. As trucks clear streets, the weight of ice and snow pushed aside is so heavy it pushes mailboxes from their posts.

In some cases, the post falls over.

Cauble agreed there were no signs of direct

contact and the damage was not the responsibility of the street department.

To his surprise, city employees retrieved, repaired and returned his mailbox to its spot before that day’s mail delivery.

“Your extra efforts far exceeded my expectations,” Cauble’s letter stated. “The goodwill projected by your employees will always be remembered.”

Kids’ consignment sale planned

By Maddie Scott • news@currentincarmel.com A Whale of a Sale, central Indiana’s largest children’s consignment event, is kicking off its fourth year this Thursday through Saturday.

Founders Courtney O’Neil and Jennifer Hare are moms, entrepreneurs, friends and sorority sisters.

O’Neil has a background in marketing and public relations in the sports and non-profit industries. Hare’s prior experience came from meeting planning, logistics and administration for Genentech in Chicago.

It didn’t take long for both O’Neil and Hare to start noticing how quickly their children were outgrowing their nice clothing and toys.

The idea of Whale of a Sale came about when the women realized they could provide a service to help mothers like themselves make and save money.

Easter egg hunt planned

news@currentincarmel.com The Hamilton County 4-H Junior Leaders will host their annual Community Easter Egg Hunt Monday at the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2003 Pleasant St., Noblesville.

The free egg hunt will begin promptly at 6 p.m. Youth ages 8 and under are invited to hunt for eggs filled with candy and prizes with their own basket. Youth can have their faces painted and have their picture taken with a llama for a monetary donation.

Proceeds will go to Relay for Life of Noblesville. Junior Leaders are participating as a Relay for Life team. The Easter Egg Hunt is one of two events the organization hosts for the community at no charge. The other is the haunted house and Halloween celebration in the fall. Funds raised from the Junior Leader concession stand during the Hamilton County 4-H Fair and poinsettia sale in December are used to host the two community events.

Students win art contest – Five Carmel High School art students competed last weekend in the Youth Art Month State Art Competition at the Indiana Statehouse. Supt. of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz recognized the talent and hard work of Franci Figueroa who won honorable mention and Alex Mikev who won overall best of show. Pedcor wins design award news@currentincarmel.com The Carmel City Center’s streetscape has earned a 2012 Brick in Architecture Best in Class Award for paving and landscape architecture design.

The design team chose clay pavers for the fabric of the plazas, streets and public ways because the pavers have a pedestrian-friendly human scale and possess timeless, vibrant colors, according to information from the Brick Industry Association. The resulting paver design is so complex that the craftsmen laid a matrix of 42 unique paver sizes and patterns using seven different colors.

Home Buy Consign furniture store opens

By Liz Schrader • news@currentzionsville.com At Home Buy Consign, a newly opened store on Michigan Road in the Stone Creek restaurant strip mall, low-priced furniture is displayed to help customers see what it will look like in their own homes.

Owner Michael Schaeffer opened the furniture consignment store two months ago and offers everything from paintings and couches to tables and lamps. Schaeffer displays the furniture as it would appear in an actual room, so shoppers can picture what it would look like in their homes as they’re shopping.

Schaeffer said it took a few months to get enough furniture to fill the space, and he got much of it from model homes, furniture shows and manufacturer’s samples.

He hopes to grow the consignment part of his business and encourages patrons to bring in their gently used furniture to sell.

“I’m growing the consignment part of the business,” he said. “As your business grows, more people want to consign. They like your store and want to continue to work with you,” he said.

With 25 years in the furniture business, Schaeffer, who has been an Indianapolis resident for four and a half years, said he knows standard industry prices and offers quality furniture at a fair price.

“I know where furniture is priced, and I’m definitely on the wholesale or lower end,” he said.

bunch of routes and decided where to go for an 8-mile run. But I must have mixed my streets up, because while I was still a good distance from home I checked my GPS and discovered I had already run 9 miles. I completed my first 10 mile run by accident!

Why I like living and running in Carmel: Carmel is a great community with lots of fun places to explore. There are great trails all over the city that are friendly to runners. And while Indiana is fairly flat, there are enough inclines (particularly in the area around Northview Church) that make training challenging enough to get you in good race shape.

My goal for the 2013 Carmel Marathon weekend: is to finish – this is my second marathon. If I can beat my previous time that would be great.

Why I run: I run for lots of reasons. Running gives me time to myself, time to think. I am in vocational Christian ministry, and some of my best times with God have been during a long run. I love the challenge of distance running, of setting a measurable goal and attaining it.

Favorite place to run in Carmel: In marathon training, I run ever-widening loops around the city, typically involving Main Street, Old Meridian/Pennsylvania, 116th, and Gray or Hazel Dell. I do also enjoy the times I’ve run through Central Park.

Pre-race rituals: Very little. I’m not a speed runner, so I don’t do a lot of warm up other than easing into my run. Small breakfast; I save the big meal for when it’s all done.

If I’m not running, I: lead a nonprofit organization called Tidewind Ministries (www. tidewind.org) that helps people pursue intimacy with God and dependence on Him. I lead extended times of worship and prayer in our Prayer Room in Broad Ripple to give people a place to come to connect personally with God. I enjoy cooking, particularly trying things that most people tend to buy at the store (homemade breads, jams, bacon, etc.)

My advice for new runners: Don’t get discouraged! Just do a little at a time. I’ve only been running for two years, and I increased my distance fairly quickly just by being consistent.

I was a happy couch potato and had no aspirations to run a marathon. I huffed and puffed during a mile on the treadmill. But something changed when I got comfortable running three miles. I warily decided to try four, then wondered if it was possible to run five. When those didn’t kill me, I decided to try just a little more, a little more. I would do a 2-3 mile run during the week and a longer (5, 6, 7, etc.) mile run on the weekend.

I set a goal to run 10 miles by the end of 2011. In October of that year I looked at a

Carmel Education Foundation hopes to dial up realtionships

By Christian Sorrell • christian@youarecurrent.com With its 27th annual fundraising telethon taking place this week, the Carmel Education Foundation is continuing its work to raise money for Carmel Clay Schools. This year though, CEF and its directors are hoping to reach beyond simply calling parents for donations and are looking to embrace the community at large and hopefully be embraced in return.

Run primarily out of a small, two-desk office in CCS’s Educational Services Center, CEF is operated on a day-to-day basis by its two coexecutive directors, Stephanie McDonald and Barbara Danquist, as well as the foundation’s secretary, Janet Corbin.

As CCS’s primary not-for-profit organization for 47 years, CEF has helped hundreds of Carmel students attend college through scholarships and has worked to better the classroom environment through a teacher-grant program, a newer initiative for the foundation.

More than 45 years of service

In 1966, a company doing expansion work on Carmel Junior High, the building that is now Carmel Middle School, wanted to donate $200 to CCS for scholarships. At the time, there was no good way to donate money to the schools. Then Supt. Forrest Stoops and Jim Garretson, a teacher, worked together with a group of Carmel citizens to create the Carmel Clay Education Foundation, Inc., a tax-exempt, notfor-profit organization.

The foundation, originally operated by a board of 21 members of the Carmel community, awarded its first scholarship that year. In the years since, CEF has undergone a name change, started organizing community events and has awarded more than $1.5 million to students through its 37 endowed and 25 annual scholarships.

For the last 25 years, an educations grants program was created in recognition of the need for additional sources of funds for classroom teachers. The program has since become a central component of the foundation’s work in Carmel with CEF having cumulatively awarded more than $600,000 in education grants since the program’s inception.

Funding classroom innovation

Throughout the years as Carmel’s schools have grown and expanded taking on more and more students, CEF began to see the need for more funding to make its way directly to the classroom, where it can better the school lives of as many students as possible. Danquist, McDonald and Corbin say that there still are plenty of learning opportunities that cannot be funded with the standard district funding. That is where CEF’s education-grants program comes in.

“We don’t want to downgrade the fact that we have the opportunity in this community to do a lot of things, but there’s definitely a deficit when it comes to giving teachers funds and allowing them to enhance the teaching in their classrooms,” Danquist said. “This is one way that the community as well as parents can fill that gap, because the school system cannot. There is only

so much they can do.”

“There is this opportunity for teachers to do these really great things that there wouldn’t be without the grant programs,” Corbin said.

The grants, ranging from approximately $600 to $6,000, are awarded to teachers that are looking to expand what currently is possible for their students. While two of the foundation’s grants are sponsored by Ingersoll Rand and focused exclusively on technology, the remaining grants may be awarded for nearly anything with a cost.

In the past, teachers have been awarded grants allowing them to purchase more easels, integrate

Carmel High School: Brenda Lester, family consumer science – Lester purchased “No Chef Left Behind,” teaching materials and enrichment learning opportunities for students in the CHS Culinary course. The course allows students to earn Ivy Tech dual credits as well as food safety and sanitation certification. The project will encompass enrolled students in grades 10 through 12.

Carmel Elementary School: Rachelle Rodriguez, art – Rodriguez purchased 12 easels and 20 cups for her students to continue their learning through painting. The project will encompass kindergarten through fifth-grade students.

Cherry Tree Elementary School: Erin Oskay, kindergarten – Oskay purchased Gross Motor Kits which contain equipment like balance beams, climbing blocks, balls, rackets and bats used to help students with special needs achieve their maximum levels of independence in the area of gross motor skills. The project will encompass about 30 students.

Carmel High School: Jill Grimes, social studies – This Ingersoll Rand grant was used to purchase a student-response system allowing teachers and students to receive immediate feedback through individual handheld devices wirelessly connected to the teacher’s computer. The project will encompass students in grades 9 through 12.

Carmel Elementary School: Alecia Larkin, speech pathologist – The Ingersoll Rand grant was used to add an additional Boardmaker Studio program to the school’s visual library, accessible by all staff. The program addresses specific language and behavior needs of kindergarten and special needs students. The project will eoncmpass kindergarten and special-needs students through fifth grade.

According to Danquist and McDonald, the grant proposals are judged on a number of criteria including the total cost, the amount of students affected, the nature of the proposed project and even the passion of the teacher. The foundation prides itself on putting its focus on teachers and students above internal requirements and bureaucracy. Because of this, CEF has been known to embrace certain projects that may not be possible at a larger organization.

The only limit to the number of grant’s given

by CEF each year is the amount of donations it has accrued during the prior year. In the future, CEF is hoping to award more, larger grants throughout the school district, embracing coordination and planning between schools, departments and teachers.

Looking forward

Each year with CEF’s annual telethon, Carmel High School seniors reach out to parents with children currently enrolled in Carmel schools, but now, more than ever, CEF is hoping to gain the attention of the entirety of Carmel. With the fifth annual Ghosts and Goblins 5K/2K runs scheduled in October and its Thank an Educator Honor Roll, a donation-backed honorary certificate for educators and staff, CEF is continuing to reach out and do more for all of those involved in schools.

According to Danquist and McDonald, while CEF may be primarily about making the classroom a better place, it is also about making Carmel a better place. Creating a better situation for Carmel’s children today will create a stronger Carmel tomorrow, it is hoped.

Pence has answer for federal cuts

Ivy league It is our position that Ivy Tech Community College has become an important community asset throughout Hamilton County, providing affordable high-quality education to a myriad of college students. Ivy Tech Community College will celebrate a major milestone this month as the college celebrates its 50th anniversary. The college was established on March 15, 1963, as Indiana Vocational Technical College and offered one academic program and had an enrollment of just more than 3,000 students. Today, the college offers more than 125 areas of study and enrolls nearly 200,000 students annually.

Ivy Tech is now the nation’s largest singly accredited statewide community college system with 14 administrative regions, 31 degree-granting campuses and classes in nearly 100 locations throughout the state.

“No other college in the nation has made such a significant impact on its students and state in such a short period of time as Ivy Tech,” said Thomas J. Snyder, Ivy Tech President.

The college has set a bold goal of increasing the number of graduates to 50,000 annually by 2025 as part of a higher education goal of returning the United States to number one in the world of postsecondary attainment.

During these two decades plus since matriculating from Indiana University, I’ve been blessed to routinely visit my alma mater.

Football and basketball games have joined scores of other campus events. In recent times, it has been great fun to watch as we climb back to the top of the college basketball heap.

The atmosphere in the Fieldhouse has been electric all season. The athletes are giving it all – and so are the fans. My own young boys are caught up in the excitement. When we’re not in Bloomington for the contests, we superstitiously light an IU candle and watch the games together at home.

Like every stereotypical “dad,” I regale them with tales of the good-old-days. “When I was on campus,” I’d boast, “We expected to win every game.” In fact, it is true. For a decade, the Indiana college basketball program dominated. It was a good time to be on campus.

And like today, it felt good to be a Hoosier.

On my way to a game with buddy from undergrad, I was transported to the early 1980s. We talked about the same things. We told the same jokes. We experienced the same connection. Even at the game, we watched the students, alumni and athletes playing their roles perfectly. The drama of sport was in full display, only something was different. From my seats to my slacks – even in the fact that I’d bought popcorn and drinks without thinking for a moment about how much it would cost and did I have enough money to cover it – somewhere along the line I’ve changed roles. Even as the place makes me feel young again, it is clear that I’m not a kid any more.

I’m really more in the dad category these days.

And, I kind of like it.

Mike Pence’s swift reaction to the sequester has been impressive. Our freshman governor emphatically stated last week that Indiana in no way will backfill the federal cuts, but, instead, courtesy of Indiana’s diligence in balancing the budget and controlling spending, the state is ready to invest strongly in some of the areas most affected by federal cuts. Education and job training are among the leaders. Pence’s 2013 budget, his office says, “includes $127 million in new funding for Indiana schools, full funding of our state-funded college aid, and $18 million in additional job training funds, all of which would help mitigate the impact of sequestration.” Former Gov. Mitch Daniels set the table, and Pence is carrying forward the mission. Thus far, it’s inspiring.

••• It very well could seem like a lost penny to a multi-billionaire, but it’s worth noting our illustrious federal government doled out nearly $400,000 in 2012 on oil portraits of government officials. Yes, indeed, priorities. Funded by your money.

••• By making the sequester cuts highly visible (see: delays at TSA screening stations at airports), President Barack Obama has done exactly as he promised to do, and that is let Americans see the effects of the whole deal up close. It’s show-and-tell leadership.

••• Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-Texas) last week introduced an amendment to the fast-moving continuing resolution-spending bill that would bar funding for Obama’s golf matches until the White House reopens for public tours. The president shut down those tours last week. Gohmert’s idea isn’t clever or funny; it’s smart. Which is exactly why John Boehner (R-Ohio), speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, threw it out. If it makes sense, apparently, it’s no good.

The real truth Commentary by Dwight Lile In a Feb. 19 letter to Indiana’s Republican county chairmen, Speaker Brian Bosma and Senate President David Long joined in an effort to persuade Republican leaders that bigger budgets are better. The facts do not support his conclusions.

Mr. Bosma presents a false choice to his constituents, which is simply this: unless we expand the budget, we can’t improve roads, increase educational funding or expand infrastructure.

Really?

What if we spent a reduced amount of money in different proportions?

We could, for instance delete the $20 million horse racing subsidy or the $100 million that the Indiana finance authority will divert from tax receipts to repay a bond used for the redevelopment of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Racing and gambling are not more important than roads and schools.

The Speaker reveals in his letter that he has advised the Governor “to keep our (budget) discussions in his office… as we successfully did with Governor Daniels.” The Speaker also expressed his dismay that, “our members are now faced with public discussions at Lincoln Day Dinners and with our party leadership…”

Of course, keeping negotiations behind closed doors means keeping Hoosiers in the dark.

Isn’t the state’s budgeting process every citizen’s business?

Perhaps Mr. Bosma has such infallible insight that he doesn’t need input from Indiana’s bothersome taxpayers as he rejects the Governor’s 10-percent personal income tax reduction.

The Speaker does mention a list of tax reforms in his letter, implying that the tax changes he “championed” reduced our burden, but that is a misdirect. According to The Tax Foundation, Indiana had the 34th highest state tax burden of all states in 2006. We now have the 23rd highest. Our state tax burden has increased relative to the rest of the country. So, Mr. Bosma’s claim in his letter that, “Hoosiers now enjoy one of the lowest cost per capita state governments in the nation,” is false.

Speaker Bosma praises Indiana property tax cuts as if there were a “permanent” cap on rates.

However, according to Tax Dispatch (Indiana Department of Revenue), Volume 11, No. 1, effective April 1, 2008, a change of Indiana’s sales tax rate (from 6 to 7 percent) was instituted “to offset the property tax caps.” It is also possible to circumvent property tax caps with a “Special Benefits Tax” levied on property when local fiscal units deem it necessary. The Special Benefits Tax has been adopted in Carmel so the property tax cap isn’t what the Speaker advertised.

Another claim by the Speaker is that “our income tax (is) the best in the nation among the 41 states that have income taxes.” However, it’s not the income tax rate that determines the total burden of government, it’s all state taxes combined.

More than half the states have a lower total state tax burden. That makes our government efficiency slightly below average. Implying that the lowest income tax rate makes our tax situation “the best” is not accurate.

Mr. Bosma asserts “that the most important job of state government is to be lean, efficient, and most importantly, sustainable.” In contrast to that assertion, The Ways and Means Committee has asked for $1 billion (with Mr. Bosma’s approval) in additional taxpayer support while arguing that it is risky to approve a budget cut in these uncertain times. Planning to spend one billion dollars more while claiming a tax reduction of one half billion is not logical.

Permit one more observation about the art of argument: “Falsumin uno, falsum in omnibus,” literally meaning “false in one, false in all.” Mr. Bosma’s argument that more government spending is essential to Indiana’s well being is a false argument.

We need the Indiana State Legislature to put itself on a sustainable path with the Pence personal income tax cut and appropriate budget reductions. Since Speaker Bosma was elected in 1986, according to The Tax Foundation, Hoosiers have gone from paying 8.6 percent of per capita income to the state to 9.6 percent. Our personal incomes have declined. We have been taxed enough already. That’s the real truth.

It's that time of year … again!

Commentary by Danielle Wilson I went for my annual lady parts exam recently, and as usual, the visit weird-ed me out.

For starters, this was the first time in many years that I had to go straight from work to my appointment. Typically I take the morning to shower, shave, primp, and coif, not only to avoid any embarrassing questions or “discoveries” but also to psyche myself up for the truly invasive and uncomfortable experience. I don’t know about you, but when I feel beautiful, I’m able to handle awkward situations like this with at least a tiny amount of grace.

Anyhoo, I didn’t have time for any of that and had to present myself to the doctor after a long day of teaching teenagers. I suppose it says something about my maturity level that I didn’t really care that I wore non-matching underwear, that much of my deodorant had worn off, and that I was running 15 minutes late. (And of course I hadn’t updated my paperwork online, and hadn’t informed the office of my change in insurance, both of which never would have escaped my radar in pre-working years.) Suffice it to say, I was a hot mess when I strolled through those glass doors.

What-evs. Me and my gyno go way back. I calculated today that I have known him for 15 years now. If I can’t be a bit disheveled around

him, who can I be? I mean, let’s be honest: he’s seen things that even my husband hasn’t (and frankly, doesn’t care to).

I’m not going to lie, though. It was still unnerving. Men, if you are still reading this, imagine having a normal conversation with a woman who’s examining every single part of you while you’re buck naked. Sounds pretty good, huh?

Well now imagine that the woman is a man, and that he’s “handling” your wife. See how it changes things? Un-COMF-tabul.

But we both know how to play the game and pretend that nothing unusual is unfolding as we talk about summer plans and kids’ activities. And probably for him at least, nothing out of the ordinary is occurring. Most likely, he’d already completed 20-plus exams before I even showed up. But for me, though I hear myself casually saying, “Yah, we’re really excited about going to Egypt in June” my brain is screaming “Oh no! Stop! I'm not presentable.”

Ah well, such are the trials of pre-menopausal women with attractive gynecologists everywhere. At least it’s only once a year. Peace out.

Hoof-in-your-mouth disease Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I read yesterday that the company IKEA was “withdrawing” one of its most popular food offerings from supermarkets in Sweden because it discovered traces of horse meat in the product.

In racing terminology, horses are not “withdrawn,” they’re scratched. But no shopper wants to hear the phrase,“Effective immediately, we are scratching our Swedish meatballs.”

These treats have always been popular, especially at weddings, and now, with a dash of equine by-product in them, they will be a big hit at bridle showers, as well. I’m just warning you: That was not the last horrible pun in this article.

People around the world (many who dine on squirrel and monkey) are outraged at this development. It was bad enough when it was exposed last year that some fish sticks contained sea life other than the traditional cod. But now concern with Mrs. Paul may seem trivial, considering that Mr. Ed might now be in fast-food burgers.

I googled the controversy because it’s still a mystery to me how a horse can get into a food processing plant. Peanuts, I can understand. Any nut can get past those rent-a-cops at the door. But an entire horse? I discovered it’s more complicated than that.

I found this explanation on the Internet: “Horse meat is butchered in Romania, and is sent through a Cyprus-registered trader to a warehouse in the Netherlands. Then a French meat wholesaler buys

the meat, resells it to a frozen food processor under the Swedish-based Findus Co. and then they put it in their lasagna.”

People have been e-mailing and blogging about this. When another firm admitted it had discovered traces of the same ingredient in its frozen dinners, the tweeting really got going.

Ironically, the company was Birds Eye. Here are some of my favorite comments…

Tried both beef tacos and horse tacos. Horse wins by a nose.

My friend ate it and was hospitalized. Condition: Stable Ate too much. Gave me the trots.

Had terrible nightmares.

By the way, why is horse meat cheaper than beef? Aren’t horses harder to catch? Pork should be cheap, too. I could see why rabbit would be expensive. Kangaroo? Up and down in price.

They should give turtle soup away. On cooking websites, there are hundreds of recipes for dishes that feature horse meat. A noted food critic who has sampled them all, says: “Most of the dishes are winners.” I’m no culinary expert, but I would think the losers would taste almost as good.

Commentary by Mike Redmond Did you catch this gem in the news?

“Older people who see the glass as half empty and who harbor low expectations for a satisfying future may be more likely to live longer, healthier lives than those who are more optimistic, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.”

Great. Just as I was trying to renew my optimistic outlook on life, along comes American Psychological Association to ruin it for me.

I knew something like this would happen.

Being an upper midwesterner, I am wellacquainted with pessimism and, now that I think about it, the therapeutic benefits therein.

I am thinking of my Grandmother Redmond, a pessimist who spent most of her life waiting for things to get worse. She lived into her 90s.

The pessimists-live-longer conclusion came from a study of 40,000 people, a good many of whom must have been in rotten moods, more than 10 years. The scientists theorized that pessimists, fearing the worst was yet to come, tended to live more carefully and take better care of themselves than others.

That last part puzzles me. If you’re a true pessimist, and you believe that life is lousy and destined to get worse, why would you bother trying to beat the odds to prolong it?

I’m not pessimistic as a rule, and that’s weird

because I am hard wired for it. The people who brought me up followed a code that said life was hard in order to make us stronger people, the better to withstand harsh reality. This was not an optimist’s outlook, especially in the realm of child raising.

We kids learned that brutal winters and blistering summers were intended to build character. Backbreaking labor was to keep us humble.

And church was where you went to be closer to God, so he wouldn’t have to reach so far when he leaned down from Heaven to smack you upside the head.

Not a lot of gosharoonie in that kind of upbringing. But you know, it actually made an optimist out of me, because instead of bowing to the pressure to be miserable, I came to the conclusion that there had to be something better out there, and all I had to do was go find it.

And now I find it could shorten my life?

That the sour pickle lasts longest? It’s unfair.

But the optimist in me finds an upside: You might live longer, because news like that will make a pessimist out of you.

Large urban jazz powerhouses of the 1920s, including Chicago and New Orleans, were not the only cities dancing to the syncopated rhythms of hot jazz. Indiana musicians heard the new sound and not only played it, but influenced the music for decades to come. Now thanks to the exhibit, guests will be able to discover Indiana’s role in making jazz.

The year-long exhibit, located on the gallery-level of the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts, 1 Center Green, Carmel, showcases the work of Hoagy Carmichael, Claude Thornhill, Red Nichols, the Hampton Family Band and many others.

Each of the artists highlighted in the exhibit had a lasting influence on jazz. The exhibit was inspired by a collection donated by Carmel resident Ted Shonfield, with the help of noted jazz photographer Duncan Schiedt.

Schiedt, who is also an author and historian, was born in Atlantic City, N.J., in 1921. He lived in New York and its suburbs from 1936 to 1950, moving to Indiana in 1951. He currently lives in the Schiedt town of Pittsboro, according to his website.

The combination of two passions, jazz music and photography, led him into a photography career as well as avocation, the photographic coverage of the music he adored. As he puts it, he became “intensely interested” in the new swing music while a student in England during a two-year sojourn there. Upon returning to the United States, he took up photography as a hobby, and was soon finding his subjects at the Times Square movie palaces and their big-band stage shows.

The exhibit is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and before the concerts in the Songbook and Jazz series.

‘Rise of the Guardians’ • PG, 97 minutes Commentary by Chris Lloyd The rap on “Rise of the Guardians” sure is nasty.

It didn’t get nominated for an Academy Award for animated feature, while lackluster fare like “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” did. And DreamWorks Animation recently announced layoffs after “Rise of the Guardians” underperformed at the box office.

Don’t buy the bunk. “Guardians” is easily the best animated movie from last year.

It might seem silly and superficial at first: Santa Claus, Jack Frost and other holiday icons band together into a super-powered group to battle evil – think “The Avengers” in rainbowhued costumes. But they’ve got butt-kicking superpowers; for instance, the Easter Bunny is now a martial arts expert, while Santa wields a pair of swords.

Also on the team are the Tooth Fairy and Sandman. They’re up against Pitch Black, aka the bogeyman, who wants to blanket the world in darkness and bad dreams.

The animation is wonderfully detailed and crisp, and the action scenes well-staged. Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law and Ilsa Fisher make up a terrific voice cast.

But what pushes “Rise of the Guardians” over the hump from good to great is its surprising emotional resonance. This one’s a familyfriendly treat.

Voca People show unearthly

It was my first time seeing the group and by the time the hour-and-a-half long performance ended, I was completely blown away. The group blends a cappella singing, beat boxing and physical comedy into one stunning performance that features little more than eight people standing onstage, but at times, manages to feel like you are listening to a full orchestra.

The show began with eight humanoid creatures in white suits with white faces and bright red lips, the people from a planet named Voca, greeting the audience after their space ship crashed nearby. From here, audience members were called to participate in the show, a style somewhat similar to performance groups like Voca People, an Israel-based a cappella and beat box ensemble, caters its music specifically to the country the Blue Man Group. Low-cost heart scans offered

By Christian Sorrell • christian@youarecurrent.com IU Health North and Saxony hospitals are offering $49 out-of-pocket heart scans. Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. Approximately 1.2 million Americans suffer a heart attack each year.

The heart scans are a very quick exam with same-day preliminary results.

The exams began being offered at this lower price last month in conjunction with Go Red for Women month to raise awareness about women’s heart health.

“We are happy to provide such an important service for minimal cost, especially during such an important month that raises overall awareness of heart health,” said Dianna Cobb, RN, BSN, manager, Cath Lab/Interventional Radiology at IU Health North and Saxony Hospitals.

While these scans are not for those who have already been diagnosed with heart disease, the scans can act as a good first assessment for those looking to assess their current heart health.

“We want to do these scans on people with no known heart disease, because it’s an easy way to assess the risk. Once we have the number, we can risk stratify the patient and move forward from there,” said Dr. Woodrow Corey, medical director of Cardiovascular Services at IU Health

North Hospital.

The scan is a quick and easy procedure that determines a patient’s calcium score by detecting how much calcium build-up exists along the coronary circulation. Calcium scores range from under 100 for those with little calcium buildup to more than 400 for those most at risk for future heart problems.

“The test is best for people between 35 and 65 years of age; Submitted photo however, there are always exceptions to every rule,” Corey said. “We see people who smoke or people who are diabetic or people who are overweight. They can develop coronary disease much earlier so it would be acceptable for them to come in even earlier.”

While the test is a good first step at checking one’s heart health, it is by no means a single determining factor in diagnosing whether a patient has a blockage or other heart problems. Those patients with a score of 400 and above will want to schedule an appointment with a cardiologist for further testing and analysis.

“Sometimes, the best thing you can do is talk to a doctor face to face,” Corey said.

This limit was not adequate to replace what she lost. Is this common?

Response from Jamie Ianigro: I hate to hear that about your claim. Unfortunately, that situation is very common. A standard homeowner’s insurance policy automatically restricts coverage on a variety of different types of property. It’s also common to see people have inadequate personal property limits.

You can avoid these problems by meeting faceto-face with your independent insurance agent to create a scheduled personal property endorsement and adding it your home policy. The schedule can include anything you want to include, but many of the items below are typical. You have automatic coverage for newly acquired property, but be sure to update your schedule to include any new property within 30 days.

Some of the common property classes excluded or limited by your policy: • Jewelry, watches, furs and precious or semiprecious stones – The typical limit is $1,500. Schedule these items.

• Musical instruments, cameras, silverware, golf equipment, fine art – These items

are not usually limited but can eat up your personal property limit very quickly.

Schedule these items.

• Cash, bank notes, coins, precious metals that are not jewelry – The policy limit on these items is typically around $200. Keep this stuff in the bank or a safe deposit box.

• Securities, evidences of debt, letters of credit, manuscripts, personal records, passports, tickets and stamps (including computer software) – The limit for this property class is typically around $1,500. The limit includes the cost to research, replace or restore information from the lost or damaged materials.

• Watercraft of any kind, including their trailers, equipment and motors – You should have a separate policy for a boat, but your home policy typically sets aside $1,500 if you don’t.

• Property of roomers, boarders and other tenants – This type of property is excluded.

Ugarit helped rewrite Bible Commentary by Don Knebel In 1928, a Syrian farmer stumbled into a tomb near the modern Mediterranean coastal city of Litakia, which has seen some of the fighting in the Syria civil war. The tomb was part of the ancient Canaanite city of Ugarit, one of the most important cities in the western world from about 1500 to 1200 BC. The excavation of Ugarit led not only to a revision of history but to a literal rewriting of the Bible.

Archaeologists digging at Ugarit found a tablet about the size of a finger containing thirty unique characters originally formed in wet clay with a wedge-ended stick. Each character represented a unique vocal sound and could be strung together with other characters to create words. Until this discovery, the invention of the alphabet had been attributed to the Phoenicians, who lived further down the coast and about 500 years later.

The Ugarit excavators also found the ruins of a temple, once visible from the Mediterranean.

in this temple. Those tablets also told stories of Ba’al’s father, the supreme god El, and Asherah, El’s consort.

The Ugarit tablets cleared up a great Bible mystery. The English translators of the King James Bible did not know the meaning of “Asherah” and somehow decided to translate it as a “grove,” leading to incomprehensible statements about burning “vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove.” Relying on the discoveries at Ugarit, modern translations, including the “New King James Bible,” simply use the name “Asherah,” noting that she was a Canaanite goddess.

The temple of Ba’al can still be seen in Ugarit, along with boat anchors left by sailors grateful for steady winds and calm seas. Statues of El and Ba’al found among the Ugarit ruins are now in Syrian museums. And the fertility goddess Asherah again has her rightful place in the Bible.

It’s simple, really Commentary by Jordan Fischer Technologically speaking, texting is a marvel of the modern world. We’re all so familiar with it now, but try to view it from a fresh perspective for a moment. Texting allows us to instantly send our thoughts, and even images and short videos, across vast expanses of space in the blink of an eye to a recipient – almost no matter where they are.

This is some Star Trek stuff, right here.

Grammatically speaking, texting might have set us all back 50 years. For this reason, and also because I have a general misanthropic streak toward anything “everybody else” is doing, I was a texting holdout for a long time. When I finally came onboard, I saw to my horror the effects texting had on grammar: punctuation and capitalization fall by the wayside, spelling is wildly erratic and homophones are misused with painful regularity. It’s a battlefield out there, people.

For the most part, I try to accept texting as the most informal of communication settings, and therefore not take grammatical errors too seriously. There are a few, however, which I think bleed over into more formal use simply through their repetition in the texting world.

One of the most egregious is the confusion of

“it’s” and “its.”

Not every phone has auto-spell check, and sometimes it’s just too much work to hunt down an apostrophe, I suppose. But mixing these two up in the “real world” will make you look lazy, or uneducated. It’s an impression you don’t have to make.

“It’s” with an apostrophe is a contraction of the words “it” and “is.” You could say, “It’s a nice day out,” or, “It’s time for lunch.” If you’re talking about a subject “being” something, odds are you want “it’s.”

“Its” without the apostrophe indicates possession. “The dog wants its bone.” “The robot recharges its battery.” If you’re talking about a subject owning something, you want “its.”

It’s a simple error to avoid, which is why people will expect you to do so. Don’t let something as small as an apostrophe get in the way of a good first impression. And don’t let the ease of texting ruin all your good grammar habits.

Your home needs jewelry, too Commentary by Vicky Earley I couldn’t agree more with Clairee, in “Steel Magnolias,” when she declared, “The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.”

A room that has the correct foundation but lacks interest is generally a room in need of touches that can come only from just the right accessory.

I recently overheard a designer use the term “house jewelry” when describing the critical final touches that make a house special. Just as in personal dressing, a room can be lavished with “house jewelry” or it can be streamlined.

My favorite house jewelry is lighting. Forget the table lamps with ivory polyester shades that your mom brought home from JC Penney. Search for at least one accent lamp that is a piece of art. The shade is just as significant as the base of an accent lamp, so look for unusual materials such as raw silks, linen, brocade and leather. Trims and crystal add excitement and interest to shades. Don’t forget to illuminate a lamp – it will come to life with the right shade.

The next layer of accessorizing your room is textile. Window treatments, pillows and throws soften the room visually and acoustically. Techniques which add the illusion of brush strokes can provide the richness of original hand painting. Whether original or reproduction, the frame is as important as the art. Oldworld art is best fearured with a rich, substantial frame. Modern pieces demand cleaner lines and color that does not compete with the art.

Finally, the last layer of room dressing would be the doo-dads, the baubles and the tchotchkes. These are defined as the “stuff.”

They are the personal mementos, the pottery, vases and the frames. Books fall into this category. Basically, it is the bits and pieces that can be arranged and rearranged to gives final polish to a room.

When the foundation of a beautiful room has been laid, it is “house jewelry” that provides the final distinction and personality.

Mixing trendy and timeless styles Commentary by David Decker Keeping up with design trends can be great fun. But getting too wrapped up in the newest looks can sometimes leave your home looking dated after the trends have changed. Certain elements like colors, materials and fixtures have a tendency to go in and out of fashion very quickly. So, it’s important to strike a balance between new styles and classic ones.

To create a really dynamic look in your home, visualize the space in layers. The first layer is made of the building blocks of the room, and includes elements like flooring or cabinetry.

Consider these items “permanent” because they require effort to replace. Keep in mind that simplicity tends to stand the test of time so you will want to select neutral styles for these permanent pieces because they have to last.

Each layer after the first will include items that are less permanent, and therefore more replaceable. It’s in the top layers where you can have fun, get creative and express your personal style. Then you can periodically replace aspects of your home without having to spend a lot of time or money renovating. If done correctly, this design strategy will result in an enduring look that doesn’t require you to sacrifice your individual design tastes.

When it comes to implementing trends in your home, try to remember that less is more.

It’s hard to know what trends will stick around and what will fade. As a general rule, it’s best to avoid using too much of a certain trend in one room. Instead, make your decorating choices pop by using trends sparingly.

Colors especially seem to come in and out of style quickly, which makes it a little difficult to select a timeless look that features a lot of color.

Try to choose a color scheme that features a fewer number of colors. I suggest using neutral hues such as browns, grays, beiges and whites for the major features of the room (walls, furniture, 36 | March 12, 2013
