A Fishers man was arrested March 5 after allegedly breaking into his father’s Carmel home, threatening to kill him PUBLIC and beating him with a gun.

According to a probable SAFETY cause affidavit, Richard Nicholas “Nick” Atwell, 38, forced his way through a locked door at the home in the 10200 block of Westfield Blvd., demanded money from his father, Richard Atwell, and repeatedly threatened to kill him. The father told police his son hit him in the jaw and face multiple times with a handgun and that he offered to give his son $510, throwing it out a side door.

The father told police that his son then pointed his gun at him and told him to lie on the ground, the affidavit states. He said after he did so, his son kicked him in the stomach and stomped on his head. The father heard the gun fire before his son fled the house.

Police responded to the call at approximately 11:40 p.m. March 4 after the younger Atwell allegedly fled the scene. Investigators found a bullet hole in the back of the couch and an empty handgun casing on the floor. They also discovered $510 in the driveway and in bushes near the side door.

Richard Nicholas Atwell was arrested and booked into the Morgan County Jail.

He is facing 10 charges in Hamilton County, including burglary with a deadly weapon, armed robbery and domestic battery.

A Smoky Row Elementary teacher is voluntarily self-quarantining after returning from a trip to Italy, which SCHOOLS has experienced widespread community transmission of the coronavirus in some regions.

In an email sent to Smoky Row families, Carmel Clay Schools stated the teacher has not been diagnosed with the virus but will remain quarantined for 14 days out of “an abundance of caution.” The teacher returned from Italy Feb. 28 and did not go to work after returning to the U.S. Italy is among the nations hardest hit by the virus, which causes the COVID-19 disease, with approximately 2,000 reported cases as of March 2. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends avoiding nonessential travel to Italy, but a travel ban is not in effect.

The first case in Indiana was reported March 6 in a Marion County man who recently traveled to Boston.

CCS stated that custodial staff at all of its schools are “focusing extra attention on sanitizing high traffic areas and commonly used surfaces.”

“Our custodians, teachers and staff are all working together to help prevent the spread of germs by continuously disinfecting their classrooms and reminding students about the importance of proper hygiene,” the email stated. “School nurses are carefully watching the health symptoms of students and staff members, especially those who exhibit symptoms associated with viruses.”

CHS breaks 5 state records

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Before Carmel High School swimmers Wyatt Davis and Jake Mitchell head off to the University of Michigan, SWIMMING they had some unfinished business: An assault on the IHSAA state record book.

The seniors led the Greyhounds to their sixth consecutive state title Feb. 29 at the boys swimming and diving state finals at the Davis Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI in Indianapolis.

“There were tremendous performances from the team all-around, definitely led by Jake and Wyatt,” Carmel coach Chris Plumb said. “They are the ultimate Mitchell team guys and they pull everyone up with them.”

Carmel won the championship with 331 points, well ahead of second-place Munster with 183.

“They got five state records, so that’s an amazing performance,” Plumb said.

Davis captured the 200 individual medley state title for the third consecutive year and won the 100 backstroke for the fourth time.

Davis concluded his high school career with 14 state titles, breaking the state record of 12 set by Carmel’s Jason Lancaster (1991-94) and Chesterton’s Kyle Whitaker (2007-10).

Mitchell captured the 200 freestyle state title for the second consecutive year and the 500 freestyle for the third time.

Davis and Mitchell led the winning 200 medley relay (1:27.94) and 400 freestyle relay (2:56.36) teams, both in state-record times.

Davis set the state record in the 200 IM in 1:44.17.

“I had my eye on the record since last year since I got close to it,” Davis said. “I knew it was possible. I was really focusing in on my technique and race strategy.”

Davis won the 100 backstroke with a state-record time of 45.80, besting his previous mark of 46.66 set last year.

He said the Greyhounds rose up in tough competition.

“A lot of teams had outstanding swims.

There were some swimmers we never heard of that came in here guns a-blazing,” Davis said.

In addition to his victories, Mitchell was named the Mental Attitude Award winner for boys swimming.

“It’s the first one in Carmel (boys) history, so we were very surprised and very honored to finally have that,” Plumb said.

Mitchell said it was a great way to cap his Carmel career.

“This year was all about enjoying it, having fun and being with my teammates,” said Mitchell, who broke his own state record in the 500 freestyle in 4:14.68.

Joining Mitchell and Davis on the 200 medley relay were sophomore Ryan Malicki and junior Griffin Hadley.

Mitchell, Davis and Hadley were joined by junior Gus Rothrock on the 400 free relay.

Cool Creek tortoise missing from nature center

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Cool Creek Park and Nature Center’s Russian tortoise Sputnik is missing. Cool Creek staff believe he was stolen from his tank the weekend before President’s PARKS Day. Supt. Of Natural Resources Amanda Smith said an employee fed Sputnik on Feb. 15 and saw him in his tank. However, when staff turned off the lights and shut down the nature center that evening, tanks were not checked because it is not standard to do so. On Feb. 16, a staff member put food in the tank but did not see Sputnik.

The nature center was closed on President’s Day. Staff realized Sputnik was missing the morning of Feb. 18.

Smith said because of the depth of the tank and type of tank lid, there is no way the tortoise could have escaped his enclosure.

Sputnik is 8 inches long and 6 inches wide. He was given to the center by a local family and is estimated to be 10 years old.

Russian tortoises can live to be 40 years old. In a post on the center’s Facebook platform, the tortoise is described as happy and healthy.

“He is well taken care of by our staff, receiving well-researched and prepared vegetables daily, regular tank cleaning, access to sunlight, proper UV lights, and vet care,” the post reads. “We’d like to ask our community for help in locating and in the return of Sputnik to us. He is missed and we are concerned for his well-being.”

Smith said no animals have been taken from Cool Creek before, but there was some suspicious activity a few years ago.

“We had a situation where a group of people were asking a lot of questions about turtles and where they can buy them, and later we notice they were putting their hands in (the tank),” Smith said. “They claimed they were just trying to pet the turtle, but it definitely seemed suspicious.”

Smith said people sometimes are upset at the idea of animals in captivity, but she said Sputnik is a non-native tortoise and cannot be released into the wild.

“It’s hard for me to imagine what their thought process was, but we have had people come in and been troubled by animals in captivity. They feel sorry for it, but this animal cannot survive on its own in the wild,” Smith said. “They’re not native to Indiana.

They would have no idea how to adjust to our climate or what to eat, so he can’t be released. So, if someone had that interest in saving him from something, it’s important to understand that.”

Smith said Sputnik is a program animal comfortable in front of groups.

“Some animals don’t do well in front of groups or they are too shy or nervous, but Sputnik was not one of those tortoises,” Smith said. “We hope they understand he has comfortable accommodations here.”

Smith said Cool Creek Park and Nature Center will consider improving its security.

“We want to make sure we can protect all of (the animals) as best as possible,” she said. “If anyone has any details, we are just interested in getting him back.”

Mixing words and emotions Commentary by Lorene Burkhart A recent research article by a Purdue professor was titled, “Do some children really hear 30 million more PLAIN TALK words than others?” This word gap is prevalent in the lower socioeconomic community as children don’t have the benefit of parents who read to them or of attending a preschool where books are part of the daily routine.

Unfortunately, young children who are handed devices to amuse themselves may also be lacking in word exposure when they start school. The research shows that it’s not just saying words that supports their development but the interaction that comes from discussion with the child.

All of us thrive with positive reinforcement, hugs and approval, but children are especially sensitive because that’s how they learn to feel and express emotions.

Genes are responsible for 30 to 60 percent of our emotionality, but the remainder comes from watching our parents and other adults. Our earliest memories may be a happy experience with a parent. That memory

is carried with us and may be brought to the forefront when we are feeling unhappy.

Children who have few happy experiences with adults are at a disadvantage because they have to rely on peers, media, the physical world and our culture to learn emotions and how to navigate them.

It describes empathy, compassion, happiness, gratitude, hope, fear, anger and anxiety and how they converge on our mind.

So, they decided that a bourbon-tasting event called BourbonFest would be a great fit for a fundraiser to benefit international initiatives the club supports, such digging wells in Africa and building schools in Haiti.

“CarmelFest proceeds benefit organizations and activities here in Hamilton County,” said Sexauer, a Carmel resident whose 1-year appointment term as club president ends June 30. “Rotary has a completely different portion of its foundation initiatives, which are international in scope. We wanted to develop a fundraiser event to support our international endeavors.”

The club will hold its fourth annual BourbonFest March 14 at Platform 24, 12400 N. Meridian St., Carmel.

“Attendance has grown a little bit as we moved forward,” Sexauer said. “The first three have been sellouts, which has been a

good thing for fundraising.”

Rotary Club of Carmel also is part of an initiative called Heart 2 Heart, which means of the heart of America to the Heart of Mexico.

“Rotary Clubs from the central U.S. have a relationship with Rotary Clubs in the Mexico City area, and we’ve developed a number of projects to benefit those in need in the Mexico City area,” Sexauer said.

Two-hundred BourbonFest tickets are available, including 75 VIP tickets that allow early entrance at 5:30 p.m. VIP-ticket holders will receive an expert guided tasting tour of bourbon, a commemorative glass and priority access to food sampling.

General admission entrance is at 6:30 p.m. for the event for ages 21 and older.

Sixteen restaurants are participating, including Sullivan’s Steakhouse, Oca, Peterson’s Steak and Seafood, Eddie Merlot’s and Blue Sushi Sake Grill.

In addition to bourbon tasting, beer, wine and soft drinks are available. There will be a silent auction during the evening.

Retiring Janus VP reflects on accomplishments

Janus, 1555 Westfield Rd., Noblesville, provides individuals with disabilities opportunies to participate and contribute within

the community through day services and programs. The organization serves clients throughout Hamilton County.

Laird’s proudest moments include bringing awareness to individuals with disabilities and making a positive impact.

“Every person has different abilities, and I think part of the thing I’m most proud of is our community realizing that people who have diagnosed disabilities can also do many positive things,” Laird said.

month where people come to Janus to tour the facility, receive an overview of all our programs and services and enjoy a lunch prepared by clients and served by clients — these are clients interested in a catering position or working in a restaurant — and that’s just a firsthand view of somebody with a disability who excels.”

Laird also is pleased that Janus has a higher profile in the community.

“One other thing I’m really proud of, too, is just the fact that when I say I work at Janus, people understand what Janus is,” Laird said. “When I first started here, the first question I’d have was, ‘Janus? What does Janus do?’ We have worked very hard

to increase name awareness of what Janus is and what we are able to do. Now, I don’t get that question anymore.”

In retirement, Laird plans to travel more with her husband, Mike, who is already retired. She also plans to increase her volunteer work with the Westfield Youth Assistance Program.

“I’m a mentor for them and I want to have an increased number of hours there,” she said. “I also want to do more in my church, Northview.”

Laird plans to participate more in the foundation she and Mike manage, the Jake Laird Memorial Fund. It was created in 2004 in memory of their son, Jake Laird, who was an Indianapolis Police Dept. officer killed in the line of duty. The foundation provides funds to police and fire departments for new equipment, new instructional programs or financial assistance to those injured in the line of duty.

Laird also will continue her hobbies of bicycling, gardening and walking trails.

“I think the best part of retirement, or what I can imagine of retirement, is the freedom to just go do whatever when I want to,” she said.

Carmel couple reflects on decades together in business, marriage

By Shelly Gattlieb news@currentincarmel.com Chuck and Patty Kelso of Carmel look forward to celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary in September and enjoy reflecting on their memories COVER STORY together.

“We’ve had a great journey, and one thing we have never ever done is speak harshly to either one,” Chuck said.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force on a bomber crew, Chuck attended Indiana University and met Patty Cooper, who was attending Butler.

“We met when he was dating my sorority sister,” Patty said. “He just loves telling that story.”

They were married at Butler’s Sweeney Chapel and spent their honeymoon in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

Chuck graduated with a degree in personnel management and was working as an employment manager in Ohio when his brother asked if he would be interested in buying a restaurant. The business had been operating for three years but was struggling. After discussing it, Chuck and Patty decided to purchase the establishment. The Iron Skillet at 2489 W. 30th St. in Indianapolis was successful during their 41 years of ownership and remains open today.

“When we started the restaurant, we didn’t have anything,” Chuck said. “We mostly did word of mouth. We didn’t do much advertising because we didn’t have the money. Food editors wrote up nice stories about us, which helped us a great deal.”

For the first five years, Chuck and Patty lived above the restaurant with their daughters.

“I was so scared that first year, but it worked, we got through it, even with our children, too,” Patty said.

After building their home, the upstairs was converted into office space and a gift shop. Their somewhat risky idea of making the restaurant more formal ended up increasing business and generating regular customers.

“There are many restaurants that they could go to, so if you take care of your job and are kind, then maybe next time they’ll want to come back,” Patty said.

Continuing with that philosophy, the Kelsos enhanced the décor and dining atmosphere, and custom uniforms were made for their servers. The restaurant quickly became a popular venue for luncheons and wedding rehearsal dinners.

At 95 and 90 years old, respectively, Chuck and Patty still enjoy keeping busy.

They have always had much in common, including a love for golf, music, reading, dancing, watching movies and playing cards. The Kelsos continue to cheer on IU and Butler teams but also are passionate Pacers fans and are excited that star Victor Oladipo is playing again.

When they decided to sell the restaurant to their manager and retire, Chuck became a starter at Brookshire Golf Club to occupy some of his free time and ended up working there for an additional 19 years. He also has served as treasurer and president of their homeowners’ association, and he never

Chuck is from Rushville and Patty is from Tipton, but they said they couldn’t be happier living in Carmel. Some of their favorite aspects of Carmel include the library system, reasonable taxes, roundabouts, clean streets and friendly people.

“We’ve made a lot of good friends and of quite a variety,” Patty said.

The Kelsos’ advice for a happy marriage is help each other, give and take, and trust. In Patty’s words, “My husband is a gentleman, but he is also a gentle man.”

Opioid crisis affects all

Commentary by Terry Anker

Editor, I am an eighth-grade student at Clay Middle School. We are doing a project on reform movements. We have to take actions in this project to work toward our goal. One of my actions is writing to a local newspaper to spread awareness about my topic and goal.

My reform topic is the opioid crisis.

This war against drugs is impacting many families, including local ones.

Everyone has at least one family member, distant or close, that is affected by opioids. This is a war that we all need to fight to make sure our local families can get the help they need.

I want to change how Hamilton County sentences the addicts they arrest. I think it would be more beneficial for the addicts to be sent to a rehabilitation center for the time of their sentence. I feel like this would help them mentally instead of putting them in a cell with others that they can’t relate to or get help from as they attempt to better themselves as people. This would also free up more space in the jails for other arrests that are more urgent and more important than drug addicts.

Every would-be sixth-grade math prodigy knows the pain. If the answer on our test is accurate, why does the teacher need to see the long-form effort that got us there? Don’t they believe that we just “knew” it? Do they think we are cheating off a nearby student? Many of us have fought the battle. We stand peering over the teacher’s desk demanding credit for our genius. Calmly, they respond that sometimes it is not good enough to simply get the correct answer. We must get there the right way – at the right time – and follow the right steps.

We are reminded of our nascent school days when we were expected to “show our work” on the way to our ultimate and definitive response. At the time, it seemed redundant, even silly.

Recess was waiting and then lunch after that. Besides, we’d heard that it was tater tot day. If it took too long to finish our test, we’d be at the end of the line and might miss the potato-based delicacy. Besides, a tater tot war would invariably break out and we’d be unarmed.

The grapes from the fruit cocktail make a poor strategic substitute.

Happily, as we grow older, our lunchroom habits largely improve. And for most of us, we come to understand and accept as apparent that the goal of showing our work was to train a process of critical thinking. We had to fully understand the accepted process before we could innovate from it. Indeed, our accuracy increased as the steps were individually considered, implemented and mastered. But as we review our grown-up selves, do our marriages, careers and other relationships demonstrate that we are showing our work?

Do we make it evident that others are valued, considered and accommodated in our lives?

Giving up phoning it in Commentary by Danielle Wilson How are your New Year’s resolutions going? I deliberately did not make any because, historically, by March HUMOR I have failed miserably. Take my 2014 vow to limit my potty mouth: I didn’t even get to Valentine’s Day before I was back to dropping hourly F-bombs, among other swear words. Nope, for me, NYRs are self-created entrapment schemes for failure and self-loathing. Naturally, I avoid them at all costs.

Lent, however, is a whole ‘nother ball game. I am the queen of giving up Diet Coke or dark chocolate or cherry Pop-Tarts for the 40 days leading up to Easter. Nothing life-changing (see stupid NYRs above) but always something that hurts a little. This year’s “sacrifice?” Games on my phone. I know, I know. Doesn’t sound like much, does it? But I’ve gotten into the habit of coming home from work and ignoring people, pets and associated responsibilities and escaping into the world of online happiness, namely Soduku and Words with

Friends. I would literally waste hours trying to find the maximum scoring word from four vowels, two Ds and an X, or attempting to break seven minutes on an expert-level Soduku puzzle without typing in notes. Top that!

And I’d gotten to the point where I actually craved the experience. Like a crack addict with my fix, if someone interrupted me, I’d pretend I didn’t hear. “Mom, you said dinner would be ready 30 minutes ago.” (No response).“Mom!” (Umm, I’m playing on my phone). “Mother!” (Fine, I’ll engage). Then I’d sulk to the kitchen muttering, “You’re 16, go$da**it! Make your own f#$%ing mac-n-cheese!”

New Year’s resolutions? Clearly not for me.

Climate change is real

She has worked as the executive director of the Hamilton County Leadership Academy and led the candidates through the specific concerns confronting the county as a whole. She has vision and experience to address the issues we face as a still-growing county. She supports a project to solve the ever-growing need of qualified and trained first responders in our vast county. With a growing population comes infrastructure demands. Sue Maki will focus on our roads, bridges and sewers. This is a Hamilton County Council person’s responsibility.

Sue has the vision, experience and education to serve us well.

Editor, Without even considering the science around climate change, I have personally observed changes in Indiana’s climate in my family’s 30 years of living in Carmel.

Summer days are hotter, resulting in more backyard swimming pools, and winters are interspersed with 50- to 60-degree temperatures, winds are stronger, and not just in tornado season, and populations of bees and other native animals are decreasing.

Even if we put the debate of climate change aside, it makes sense to reduce our use of natural resources to preserve them for future generations. Small actions such as turning off the lights when you leave a room and reusing plastic bags to bigger actions such as installing solar panels or buying a hybrid car will help to make Carmel a viable and special place for our kids and grandkids.

Here are two of my wackiest moments: The long and short of it Back in the ’90s, I interviewed a jockey who was racing that night at Hoosier Park in Anderson. The young rider let me question him while he was standing on a chair with the camera only showing him from the waist-up — the premise being that he was the world’s tallest jockey, at about 6-foot-7.

He rode the comedy sketch like a pro.

“Why did you become a jockey?” I asked him.

“I was really bad at basketball,” he confessed, “but I loved horseback riding.”

I didn’t reveal the ruse until my last segment on that morning’s news, but the owner of the horse never saw that portion.

She also had never met her new jockey. She called the track in a panic, and to this day I don’t know if she found the prank funny.

I do know that tall-in-the-saddle was not what she was looking for!

When the chain first opened back in the ’90s, I called to arrange an on-camera interview with the manager. I made a request that I never expected him to grant: I asked if we could walk into a room and act like we didn’t notice a couple still in bed (those two people would be friends of mine who agreed to participate in the fun). While we did the interview, there was no hanky-panky going on, of course, but my friends kept peeking out from the covers, feigning curiosity about what we were doing in their room.

The next day, viewers approached me and asked if I knew there were people in bed behind me. I told them yes, they were friends of mine, and that they like having an audience.

Sports are a great way to exercise and have fun at the same time, and with the right routine, you can ATHLETICS minimize your chance for injuries.

Warm up: Warming up is important for injury prevention, much more so than stretching prior to exercise. Before stepping onto the field or court and going full speed, give yourself 15 to 20 minutes to get your body moving. Start your warm up with a light jog or run in place to get your heart rate up.

Then, begin with active stretches such as toe touches, deep lunges, knee hugs and jumping jacks. Hamstring strains, for example, are a common sports-related injury and are less likely to happen when your muscles are warmed up.

Wear the proper equipment: Make sure your gear, including helmets, mouth guards or pad, fit properly. Gear that is too big or too small isn’t protecting your body correctly and can result in injury.

Get enough rest: The micro-injuries to our tissues heal and repair as we sleep, and we

get stronger as a result. When athletes do not get enough sleep, their muscles become fatigued and they are at greater risk for injury. Overuse injuries, such as shin splints, can sometimes be a result of too much physical activity in a short time and not enough rest.

You cannot expect your body to perform at its best if it’s running on a low battery.

Do not power through the pain: You may be making a minor injury much worse if you do this. See a sports medicine specialist to avoid further damage, and certainly if the pain continues or makes it difficult to perform everyday activities.

Cool down: Stretching after activity helps maintain flexibility to promote good body mechanics. Stretching also can reduce the buildup of lactic acid from tough workouts, which can make your muscles cramp and feel stiff.

Mourning morning heel pain?

Stabbing, aching, sharp shooting and feeling like a stone bruise. These are some of the terms patients use to describe heel pain, especially on their first few steps out of bed or off the couch at the end of the day. The symptoms usually happen when there are mechanical issues with their feet, or they have added stress in some way.

Plantar fasciitis (plantar fash-e-ite-is) is the most common heel pain diagnosis. It is caused by excessive physical stress to the plantar fascia (fasha), a strong, widethick ligament that stretches from the heel to the ball of the foot.

Pain is often worse after any amount of rest because the fascia contracts when at rest from a physically demanding activity. When weight is placed on the foot it naturally wants to flatten out, but the tight fascia does not want to stretch out adequately. This leads to over-pulling on the heel bone where it attaches or sometimes the arch, and this is what causes the intense pain.

Plantar fasciitis can be caused by one or a combination of the following: • poor foot mechanics

• tight calf muscles • weight gain • prolonged stance or walking • uneven terrain • shoes without support • new exercise routine • excessive bare foot walking Untreated for several months, the inflamed tissue then thickens like scar tissue. Most patients respond very well to conservative treatment with less than 3% requiring surgical intervention.

Treatment begins by determining the cause and may include orthotics, cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory medications, MLS Laser Therapy, shoe education, splinting, lifestyle changes and physical therapy.

The longer and more intense the symptoms have been present then usually the more aggressive the treatment needs to be.

Blu Moon Café will soon concentrate solely on the strength of its business.

“We’ve been doing catering for such a long time, it’s the main RESTAURANT growth of our business,” Blu Moon Café General Manager Bree Martis said. “We decided it was going to be more beneficial to go to catering (completely) instead of keeping up the café. We love our people and love being here. It was time to leave on a good note rather than a bad note.

“The lease (is) up (June 1) and we decided it was time to do it.”

Blu Moon specializes in paninis, soups and salads. It also offers breakfast and has an espresso bar.

Martis, who has been with the business 9 1/2 years, said the restaurant in Carmel’s Indiana Design Center will close at the end of May. The restaurant is owned by Shelly and Brian Jordan, who are involved in day-to-day operations as well.

employees,” Martis said. “They are like family with customers and employees.”

Prior to opening in Carmel, the business operated as a restaurant in Noblesville known as Logan Street Marketplace.

“We have a lot of repeat catering customers who love (that) they can just give us a phone call and say, ‘Hey, (I) have an emergency meeting or I forgot to do this,’” Martis said. “They know they can trust us to drop everything off, get everything ready for them and they don’t have to worry about a thing. They love us for that. They know they are getting great food and great service.”

Hoosier Sister is ready for something new in 2020. Aside from the nationwide travel shows and local pop-up shops, the home décor business is adding DESIGN interior decorating and design seminars to its services.

Carmel siblings Heidi Heldt and Gretchen Harter co-founded the business seven years ago. It began as a small antique shop and grew into a full-service home décor destination.

“The business came out of a love for design and decorating,” Heldt said. “When we were children, our mother would let us redo our rooms and let us be creative, and that transferred into college and our first homes.

We realized that we could turn it into something that hopefully people would like.”

In 2018, Hoosier Sister introduced pop-up shops in Zionsville, and this year the sisters will stage a pop-up shop next to Java House at Clay Terrace Mall. The first will run through March 15. The second will from May 4 to May 9.

Civic Theatre newcomers grab key roles in ‘A Few Good Men’ at The Tarkington

Kraft, a 2009 Carmel High School graduate and 2013 Purdue graduate, will PLAY appear in a lead role in Civic Theatre’s production of “A Few Good Men” March 13 to 28 at The Tarkington at the Center for Performing Arts in Carmel.

“I didn’t figure out I was interested in acting until I was in college,” said Kraft, a Carmel resident who works in Carmel in apartment leasing. “I had some theater credits while working on a film degree and got the acting bug.”

Kraft recently moved from California and wanted to get back into acting in plays.

“A friend of mine told me about auditions for this,” Kraft said. “It’s a great script and an awesome part. I’m lucky I get to work on it.”

Kraft plays Lt. Daniel Kaffee, a lawyer defending the two young Marines who are accused of murdering fellow Marine William Santiago.

“At first, it’s me unwillingly taking the case and then me getting drawn in deeper and deeper,” Kraft said. “As I get in over my head, I have to get out of it.”

The screenplay for the 1992 movie was adapted by Aaron Sorkin from his own Broadway play. Tom Cruise played the role of Kaffee in the film.

“A lot of people will have in their mind what the movie looks like, but we will have our own take on it,” Kraft said.

Kraft took acting courses in California while pursuing film and TV work.

“There are a lot of lines to get down, so that’s been the challenge, to get that down and have it memorized well enough that I can play with it and be loose,” Kraft said.

Jonathan Scoble plays Jonathan James Kendrick, one of the Marines involved in ordering Santiago’s punishment that led to his death.

Scoble, 39, describes his character as a stereotypical military tough guy.

Anna’s take: I remember growing up in Westfield and going to Jan’s Village Pizza after Westfield High School football games for pizza and soda. A decade later, the little pizzeria is still the same, with red-and-white checked tablecloths and an expansive menu.

I am not a big fan of thick crust, so I appreciate the crunchy thin crust of the pizzas. I also am not your typical pepperoni-and-sausage gal. I like a little variety, so the Med-

iterranean pizza was perfect. It has Greek dressing, spinach, feta cheese, chicken, bacon, banana peppers and mozzarella. You can order a personal 8-inch pizza or up to a giant 20-inch pizza.

Suggested pairings: Try the wine float ($6.50), with various flavor combos. My favorite is The Crystal Unicorn, with rainbow sherbet and Riesling, but trust me — order the wine float.

1. A double-sided ventless fireplace originally separated the kitchen from the living area. The fireplace and wall that encased it were removed.

2. A liner gas fireplace was added to the exterior wall of the living room.

It is surrounded by stacked stone and topped with crown molding and a lovely tapered finish to the ceiling.

3. All of the arched doorways on the first floor were squared off for a more modern appeal.

4. The kitchen layout was updated to provide a large peninsula for seating. All new quartz countertops, cabinetry, lighting and flooring completed the transformation.

THE CHALLENGE This 2005 home is in the southeast Indianapolis neighborhood of Greystone. The owners wanted an extensive overhaul of the first floor, including the kitchen, dining area, laundry room, living room and fireplace. The goal was to create a more modern, open concept and improve the flow of the space.

Tracing Rome’s Spanish Steps Commentary by Don Knebel The Spanish Steps constitute the widest stairway in Europe. To find them, you go to Rome and look for a French TRAVEL church.

In 1494, Francis of Paola, a Christian hermit, established the monastic Order of Minims and built a monastery atop Pincian Hill in what was then the northeastern corner of Rome. In 1502, King Louis XII of France began building a church next to the monastery that became known as Trinità dei Monti (Trinity of the Hill). In 1647, the Spanish government moved its embassy to the Holy See, considered the oldest embassy in the world, to the base of Pincian Hill. The embassy became known as the Palazzo di Spagna (the Palace of Spain) and the nearby public square became known as Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square). The square became popular, attracting people from throughout Rome to elaborate events held by the embassy.

In 1659, France and Spain signed a treaty ending the Franco-Spanish War. A year later, Stefano Gueffier, a French diplomat, bequeathed 20,000 scudi to connect the Span-

ish Square with the French church. Beginning in 1723, Gueffier’s funds were used to construct a stairway from Piazza di Spagna to the top of Pincian Hill. The original idea of a statue of French King Louis XIV was rejected by the pope. The picturesque Spanish Steps (officially Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti), including between 135 and 138 steps, depending on what is counted, attracted artists, who in turn attracted young women seeking to become models. As a result, the Spanish Steps became a popular place for people from throughout Rome to meet and linger. In 1995, after a major restoration, an ordinance prohibited eating on the Spanish Steps. In 2019, an ordinance made sitting on the steps subject to a $450 fine. Like other Italian laws, these ordinances are not religiously obeyed.

An ironic pill to swallow Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt Jump into your DeLorean time machine for a moment and let’s travel back to the year 1996. Dolly the Sheep just became the first cloned mammal. “ER,” “Seinfeld,” “Friends” and “Home Improvement” are dominating the TV Guide headlines. Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls reign as NBA champions while MTV is still playing music videos.

Now that we’re together at the end of the 20th century, let’s talk about “irony” and “coincidence.” I’m sure you know where I’m going with this. Canadian songwriter Alanis Morissette dropped this little number on us in her album “Jagged Little Pill,” called “Ironic.” The problem is, the song “Ironic” includes several examples of coincidence.

“Irony” is a situation where there is a striking contrast between expectation and reality. Think about a vegan who can’t bear to part with her worn-in leather jacket or an

IndyCar driver who doesn’t have a driver’s license. Other examples of irony include a barista who doesn’t like coffee or the fact that Dr. James Naismith, who invented basketball, is the only Kansas University basketball coach with a losing record. Isn’t it ironic?

“Coincidence” is when two or more things happen seemingly by chance. Suppose it rains on your wedding day. Or how about if you get a free ride when you’ve already paid.

Here’s the meta-irony: Because “Ironic” doesn’t include any examples of irony, it’s actually incredibly ironic. When you take a song full of coincidences and title it “Ironic,” you’ve got a heaping pile of irony on your hands. For people who have made fun of this song for its non-irony, this realization can be a jagged little pill to swallow. Who would’ve thought? It figures.

Properly and completely executed Form 96 (revised 2013) prescribed by the Indiana State Board of Accounts which includes a financial statement, a statement of experience, a proposed plan or plans for performing the Work and the equipment the Bidder has available for the performance of the Work; 2. Bid Bond in the amount of ten percent (10%) of the total Bid amount, including any alternates, with a satisfactory corporate surety or by a certified check on a solvent bank in the amount of ten percent (10%) of the amount of the Bid. The Bid Bond or certified check shall be evidence of good faith that the successful Bidder will execute within ten (10) calendar days from the acceptance of the Bid, the Agreement as included in the Project Manual. The Bid Bond or certified check shall be made payable to the Owner.

Owner reserves the right to hold any or all Bids for a period of not more than sixty (60) days after the date on which the Bids are opened and, for such sixty (60) day period, all such Bids shall be in full force and effect. Any Bid may be withdrawn prior to the scheduled closing time for the receipt of Bids but no Bidder shall withdraw a Bid within the sixty (60) days after the actual opening of the Bids. All Bid Bonds and certified checks of unsuccessful bidders will be returned by the Owner upon selection of the successful Bidder and execution of the Agreement, and provision of the required Performance Bond and Payment Bond.

Indiana Code § 5-16-13 et seq.” or “Chapter 13”, applies to this Project in addition to the provisions of the public works statute found at Indiana Code § 36-1-12 et seq. To the extent the two (2) foregoing statutes are inconsistent, the provisions of Indiana Code § 5-16-13 et seq., shall govern and the substance of its provisions shall be stated or incorporated by reference in the public works contract(s) awarded for this Project.

Bidders must comply with the non-collusion provisions of Indiana Code § 36-1-12-4. In the event that the total amount of the contract awarded to the successful Contractor is $300,000 or more, the successful Contractor must be qualified under either Indiana Code § 4-14.6-4 or Indiana Code § 8-23-10 before doing any work on the Project.

A Performance Bond with good and sufficient surety, acceptable to the Owner and Architect/Engineer, shall be required of the Contractor in an amount equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price, conditioned upon the faithful performance of the Agreement. The surety of the Performance Bond may not be released until one (1) year after the Owner’s final settlement with the Contractor. Retainage will be as required by Indiana Code § 36-1-12 et seq.

The Contractor shall execute a Payment Bond to the Owner, approved by Owner and Architect/Engineer and for the benefit of the Owner, in an amount equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price. The Payment Bond is binding on the Contractor, the subcontractors, and their successors and assigns for the payment of all indebtedness to a person for labor and services performed, material furnished, or services rendered. The Payment Bond must state that it is for the benefit of the subcontractors, laborers, material suppliers, and those performing services. The surety of the Payment Bond may not be released until one (1) year after the Owner’s final settlement with the Contractor.

All out-of-state entities must have a certificate of authority to do business in the State of Indiana. Application forms may be obtained by contacting the Secretary of State, State of Indiana, Statehouse, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204. Contractor must comply with all applicable legal requirements in Title 5 and Title 36 including but not limited to those in Indiana Code § 5-16-13 et seq., Indiana Code § 36-1-12-4, the antidiscrimination provisions of Indiana Code § 5-16-6 et seq. pursuant to Indiana Code § 36-1-12-15, the E-Verify provisions of Indiana Code § 22-5-1.7 et seq. and the Iran certification provisions of Indiana Code § 5-22-16.5 et seq. pursuant to Indiana Code § 36-1-12-23.

The Owner reserves the right to (1) cancel this solicitation pursuant to Indiana Code § 5-22-18-2 and/or (2) reject any offers, in whole or in part as specified in the solicitation when Owner determines in accordance with applicable Indiana laws including but not limited to Indiana Code § 36-1-12-4, that such action is in the best interests of the Owner. Owner reserves the right to delay the opening of the Bids pursuant to Indiana Code § 36-1-12-4. To the extent permitted by applicable law, the Owner reserves the right to waive any of the terms, conditions or provisions contained in this Notice to Bidders or the Bid Documents or any informality, irregularity or omission in the bid process or in any Bid which waiver is deemed in the Owner’s discretion to be to the advantage of the Owner and which does not afford any Bidder a material competitive advantage over other Bidders. Except as specifically otherwise provided herein and as allowed by applicable Indiana law, a contract for the Project shall be awarded in accordance with this Notice to Bidders, Indiana Code § 5-16-13 et seq. and Indiana Code § 36-1-12-4, to the lowest responsible and responsive Bidder and does not exceed the funds available for the Project. The position available requires the barn manager to manage the facility, do minor barn and grounds repairs/maintenance, have a working knowledge of equine health care and first aid, be proficient in western riding and the training of safe trail horses, be able to rotate and seed pastures as needed, order hay feed and bedding, schedule the vet and farrier, and any other tasks that may arise at a small private horse barn.

Required Skills: The ability to carry out heavy physical labor in all weather conditions, basic handyman skills (fence fixing, changing light bulbs, etc.), strong understanding of equine management (feeding, turnout, grooming, bathing, blanketing, managing medications, first aid, etc.). MUST be proficient at riding and training western trail horses and know how to safely teach others to ride and work around horses.

HEAD LANDSCAPER

This position is responsible for the cultivation and care of the landscaping and grounds.

Worker will typically perform a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: sod laying, mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, sprinkler installation, pulling weeds, repairing and maintenance of buildings/ structures.

Key Responsibilities • Perform groundskeeping and building maintenance duties.

• Cut lawn using hand, power or riding mower and trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls.

• Landscape by planting flowers, grass, shrubs, and bushes.

• Apply pesticide to rid grounds of pests such as mosquitos, wasps, ticks, and others.

• Apply fertilizer to ground to enhance growth.

• Shovel snow from walkways and sprinkle ice melt down.

• Cut down tree limbs that are posing a danger.

• Trim shrubs and pull weeds.

• Perform minor repairs and maintenance procedures on equipment utilized in groundskeeping.

• Rake, mulch, and prune the grounds as needed.

• Install rock, cement, lighting, water, and furniture.

• Water plants and grass as needed and apply fertilizer.

Experienced Caregiver/Companion for 96-year old lady in her home in Carmel, 106th/Shelborne Rd area. Three days a week approximately 8 hours per day / approximately 24 hours per week at $ 20 per hour. Days of week and hours are flexible.

Responsibilities in addition to companionship/safety, include help with activities of daily living including dressing, bathing, toileting, medication, hearing aids, occasional driving to appointments or take to lunch meals/ snacks and light housekeeping. ie make her bed or change it if accident, wash her laundry, put her dishes in dishwasher, etc The individual is currently mobile on her own and able to accomplish many activities herself, but is starting to experience some mild cognitive decline. Family also lives in the home are gone a fair amount.

The right individual will be a non-smoker, kind and caring, Trustworthy, the type of person who consistently shows up for work, able to lift up to 50 pounds, have great references and be able to pass a full background check.

Certifid Nurse Assistant a plus but not mandatory Would be wonderful if you are also available to do occasional Overnight sitting.
