Council approves $60M bond for road projects

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel City Council approved $60 million in bonds on March 1 to pay for road improvements primarily in CITY NEWS Home Place and redevelopment areas.

The council prioritized the projects in the bond ordinance as follows: • Smoky Row Road between Old Meridian Street and Range Line Road • 3rd Avenue between Main Street and City Center Drive • Intersection improvements at 96th Street and College Avenue (roundabout)

• Intersection improvements at 106th Street and College Avenue (roundabout) • Intersection improvements at 106th Street and Westfield Boulevard (roundabout) • College Avenue from 96th Street to 106th Street • Haverstick Road between 96th Street and 99th Street • 99th Street between Westfield Boulevard and Haverstick Road • Home Place multi-use paths • 3rd Avenue between City Center Drive and Carmel Drive • AAA Way and 116th Street (roundabout) • AAA Way and Carmel Drive (roundabout)

The funds also are expected to cover underground relocation of some transmission lines.

Councilors included more projects than they expect can be funded through the bond in case projects end up being less expensive than projected or federal funds or other methods are secured to help pay for some of them. Although it’s unlikely to be used, the council added an amendment that requires council approval of additional projects should funds still be available once the listed projects are complete.

The council also approved a provision that prohibits bond funds from being used on public art.

With spring arriving at the end of this month, the City of Carmel is preparing to begin another busy CONSTRUCTION road construction season.

City Engineer Jeremy Kashman provided an update on projects planned for 2021 during the March 1 Carmel City Council meeting. The following is an overview.

SPRING PROJECTS Stormwater improvements in Home Place are underway, with much of the work taking place in the Northridge subdivision.

Partial road closures can be expected.

Utility relocations along Range Line Road/Westfield Boulevard are expected to require partial closures. The relocations must happen in advance of a new roundabout planned for 116th Street and Range Line Road and culvert work south of the intersection.

The city plans to begin the expansion of the Japanese Garden behind City Hall, with demolition of buildings south of the existing pond set to begin in mid-March. As work progresses, the city plans to upgrade

the adjacent trail and add new plants.

Work to reconstruct 1st St. NW just north of Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream is expected to begin on or after April 5. The city will upgrade the roadway and add curbs and a sidewalk.

The city plans to shut down Range Line Road at Walnut Street (6th St. SE) for 60 days on or after April 5 to construct a roundabout. The Arts & Design District arch is expected to be back in place before that time. Lane reductions are expected on Range Line Road in the area through July.

111th Street at Westfield Boulevard will close on or after May 3 for construction of a single-lane roundabout.

Partial closures of the Monon Greenway are expected this spring for ditch dredging along its east side between Carmel Drive and 116th Street.

Work to bury overhead lines on Guilford Road between Grand Boulevard and Main Street is expected to begin, although a start date has not been determined.

SUMMER PROJECTS Smoky Row Road is expected to close for 30 days on or after May 3 for sanitary sewer and water line work.

Hamilton County will resurface the bridge

deck along 116th Street over the White River, with traffic reduced to one lane in each direction. Work is expected to last 60 days.

A partial closure of Shoshone Drive and Oswego Road is expected for 60 days beginning in May as the city installs sidewalks and upgrades drainage.

A full closure of Westfield Boulevard south of 116th Street is expected for 35 days beginning July 4 for reconstruction of a culvert.

FALL PROJECTS Range Line Road will experience partial closures for 100 days between Carmel Drive and 116th Street as the city adds medians and multi-use paths.

111th Street and College Avenue will be closed for 60 days beginning on or after Sept. 6 for construction of a single-lane roundabout.

The Monon Greenway will be closed for 21 days between 116th Street and Carmel Drive for a culvert reconstruction. Partial closures also can be expected along the Monon in the fall through the City Center area.

The Duke transmission line burial project along Veterans Way through Midtown is expected to last 180 days.

Gender-biased construction signs banned at request of young sisters

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Sisters Blair and Brienne Babione were confused by the “Men working” sign they saw near a construction zone on their way home from school.

CITY NEWS They had seen women working in construction before, and they knew it is a career they could pursue someday if they choose. So, they decided to take action, writing letters to Carmel City Council President Sue Finkam. “‘Men working’ signs are a problem, because when little girls see them, they might think, ‘Oh, I can’t be a construction worker, but I want to,’” Blair’s letter stated. “Seeing a little girl feel like that makes me sad.”

Her sister agreed.

“Lots of construction people have been using ‘Men working’ signs, and I think it’s not right because girls can do anything,” Brienne stated in her letter.

The Cherry Tree Elementary students read their letters — and received a standing ovation — at the March 1 Carmel City Council meeting. During the meeting, the council approved a resolution banning gender-biased construction signage.

Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a requirement in 1978 to phase out those types of signs within a decade.

Finkam said the City of Carmel hasn’t used them for several

years but that the signs the girls saw were displayed by a subcontractor.

The resolution passed a week before International Women’s Day, which this year is themed, “Choose to Challenge.”

During the meeting, the council recognized more than a dozen female city employees working in fields typically staffed by men.

Finkam said the resolution is for the benefit of all Carmel residents.

“It also applies to men wanting to go into situations like nursing or be a stay-at-home parent, which is typically identified as a female occupation,” she said.

Leslie Babione, Blair and Brienne’s mother, hopes that her daughters’ willingness to speak up and Carmel’s new resolution will inspire other cities to do the same.

“We hope, by us calling attention to this matter, that we inspire others to know that their voices, big or small, can make an impact by getting involved in civic duty, learning how government and advocacy works and doing research on a cause you are called to before taking action,” Leslie Babione stated. “When we have conflicting views on a matter, then there’s opportunities for connection and for dialogue. Sparking conversation and listening to each other is the first step to making progress.”

Trails in Hamilton, Boone counties receive grant funds from state

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Gov. Eric Holcomb announced March 4 that trail extensions in Hamilton and Boone counties are among those set to receive funding through the second OUTDOORS round of grants administered through the state’s Next Level Trails program.

The state will provide $1 million to build 2.5 miles of the Steven Nation Community Pathway in Hamilton County, $1.8 million to build 1.8 miles of the Big-4 Trail in Zionsville and $2.5 million to build 5.8 miles of the Big Four Trail in Lebanon and unincorporated Boone County.

The Steven Nation Community Pathway is planned to follow 234th Street from Cicero to the White River Campground at Strawtown Koteewi Park. Inside the campground, the new trail will connect with the pedestrian bridge over the White River.

The state funds will help expand the Big-4 Rail Trail in Zionsville, extending it to the northwest to the Whitestown border and southeast to the Vonterra neighborhood. It will include new trailhead facilities where the former Big Four

In Lebanon, the grant will build a trail to connect the Courthouse Square to Abner Longley Park. It also will fund upgrading 4.4 miles of deteriorating trail to asphalt in unincorporated Boone County to create a continuous paved connection from Thorntown to Lebanon.

During a March 4 virtual press conference, Holcomb announced $29.6 million in grants to fund 18 projects throughout the state to build 70 miles of trails. The projects also will be funded through nearly $22 million in matching dollars from applicants.

BCHD Public Health Educator Claire Haughton said the list is prioritized by eligibility, age, distance to the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds vaccination clinic, comorbidity

status and other considerations.

“Basically, if we know we are going to have a certain amount of vials or even doses that we need to use at the end of the night, we turn to the will call list,” Haughton said.

The purpose of the list is to avoid wasting vaccine doses, according to the BCHD. If remaining doses are available, a BCHD official will contact the next person on the list to ask if they are available for an immediate appointment. The department is not accepting walk-ins.

COMMUNITY Man arrested in Carmel after standoff with police news@currentincarmel.com One person was arrested early March 4 in Carmel after a standoff with police.

Police responded to the 100 block of Meadow Lane at approximately 11:37 p.m.

March 3 after receiving a report of shots fired in the area. They identified Rodney Belcher, 43, as a person of interest, but Belcher initially refused to exit his residence.

After the SWAT team responded, Belcher surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody, according to CPD. He was charged with criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony.

Police do not believe anyone was injured during the incident.

New health department administrator — The Hamilton County Health Board has selected Jason LeMaster as the health department’s new administrator. LeMaster replaces Barry McNulty, who passed away in December 2020. LeMaster has been in public health for 27 years. He has served as the LeMaster director of environmental health for the past 24 years. In that capacity, he has overseen restaurant inspections, water quality, on-site sewage disposal and mosquito control. His department is also responsible for testing public swimming pools and private wells. LeMaster has served as the department’s interim administrator for the past several months.

Fieldhouse plans for more fans

Despite the COVID-19 BASKETBALL pandemic, there will be plenty of basketball games. In addition to Indiana Pacers games, the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament and NCAA men’s basketball tournament will be held in Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Indiana Dept. of Health is allowing 25 percent of capacity or 4,500 fans, but the Indiana Pacers haven’t yet allowed that many. The capacity cap for the NCAA Tournament is 25 percent as well.

“We were allowed about 1,000 when we started having fans in January,” said Carmel resident Danny Lopez, Pacers Sports & Entertainment vice president of external relations and corporate communications.

“We’re gradually allowing more and up to

about 1,500 to 2,000. The approach we’ve taken is crawl, walk, run. We’re going slow.

Even with vaccines and the (COVID-19) numbers going down, people are still worried about being at a place with a lot of people.

We’re trying to gradually ramp that up in a responsible way.”

Lopez said one change is the Fieldhouse has become a cashless facility. It’s a big issue for older people who are used to paying with cash.

“We have cash-to-cards machines around the concourse, so it’s pretty easy to cash in and it spits out a debit card,” Lopez said.

“It’s a debit card with no fees. It can be used in the arena and anywhere outside.”

Keeping the security process running smoothly is another key.

Bags go through X-ray machines. All tickets are mobile.

All food is individually packaged and there are no more soda refills. Fans must wear face masks except when eating and drinking, which is only permitted in seats.

A new 5-mile event in Westfield has been added to the Carmel Road Racing Group’s calendar.

However, RUNNING CRRG race director Todd Oliver said it’s likely to be for one year only. The Carmel Marathon Weekend 5 Mile Tune Up Presented by PBT will be at Oliver 9 a.m. March 13. The Carmel Marathon, featuring a half-marathon and 10K, is set for April 3.

Oliver said the race is a replacement of the Polar Bear Winter Classic, which is usually the third Saturday in February in downtown Indianapolis, offering a 5K and 10K. That race had to be canceled this year because there wasn’t room to socially distance for a packet pickup amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year’s Polar Bear race drew 1,600 runners.

“This is a makeshift, temporary fix for the folks that are probably running the half-marathon or 10K (during Carmel Marathon Weekend),” Oliver said. “It gives them a chance to go out and stretch and be in a race environment, which a lot of them haven’t done for 12 to 14 months.”

The course will start and finish in front of Grand Junction Brewing’s taproom, 1189 E. 181st St., and will tour around and through Grand Park Sports Campus. The chip-timed event will be limited to 350 people, and COVID-19 policies and procedures will be in place throughout the event. All participants will receive an event shirt and a free beverage from Grand Junction Brewing Co. “There are no medals or age group awards,” Oliver said. “It’s truly a tune-up race to let people get that feel. Campus names first chancellor

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com By becoming an independent campus, Ivy Tech Hamilton County’s first challenge was finding a chancellor. It EDUCATION chose its leader in Stacy Atkinson.

Atkinson, a Westfield resident, has worked with Ivy Tech for more than six years. She started at the systems office, where she oversaw online courses. She then moved to the strategic initiatives department to create a strategic plan for the community college.

However, at the end of the strategic plan, Atkinson said her heart led her to campus work. She became vice chancellor for academic affairs at the Richmond campus in December 2017.

“It was the strategic plan that really led me to that. At the systems office, the goal is the overall strategic plan, but being on a campus felt like you were actually doing something, and I could actually implement a strategic plan in Richmond,” said Atkinson, who started her new role at Ivy Tech Hamilton County March 1. “I helped write the strategic plan to give to 6,000 people, and I wanted to be part of it.”

In July 2019, Atkinson was promoted to chancellor of the Richmond campus. She and her family planned to move from Westfield to Richmond, but then the COVID-19 pandemic began, and they never got the chance.

Then, opportunity knocked a bit closer to home.

“I had made the decision to commute, and then (Ivy Tech) made the Hamilton County campus, which is just 16 minutes from my home,” Atkinson said.

However, she didn’t accept the chancellor position at Ivy Tech Hamilton County simply because it shortened her commute.

“My skills speak to a build-up and a startup and starting something new,” Atkinson said. “Ivy Tech hasn’t spun a campus out of a site, so this is a very unique opportunity, and the only reason they have done this is data shows the recruitable population is so large and the opportunity is so large in the area that it needs its own autonomous campus.”

Ivy Tech announced in September 2020 that the Hamilton County site at 300 N. 17th St., Noblesville, will become an independent campus in July of this year. As a result, students can earn degrees at the Hamilton County campus. Ivy Tech Hamilton County is the community college system’s 19th

“We will know what programs within our service area of Hamilton County will be the most productive of putting Hoosiers into the workforce and have those here instead of saying you can only take the basics here, but then we have to send you to the central Indiana campus,” Atkinson said.

Ivy Tech Hamilton County is still drafting which programs it plans to offer. Atkinson said data from across the county shows, for example, that Carmel is STEM-focused and Cicero is agricultural-focused.

“And then there’s health care,” Atkinson said. “Riverview (Health) is right down the block, so we can’t ignore that.”

Atkinson said an education degree will be offered because of a shortage of teachers in the state and nation.

“Hamilton County is very hungry for this is what I’ve learned in the last two months,” Atkinson. “It is very hungry for the opportunity to utilize this building and utilize Ivy Tech as the medium for skilling up their workforce. Hamilton County has so much opportunity, it’s hard to articulate it and put it into words. It’s the right thing to do. Ivy Tech having a sole, autonomous, dedicated campus here is the right thing to do.”

Boys earn 7th straight title

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Although it wasn’t as glitzy as 2020, the Carmel High School boys swimming team found another way to race SWIMMING to a state title.

In 2020, Jake Mitchell and Wyatt Davis, now at the University of Michigan, each won two individual events and were on two winning relays. They were part of five state records.

This year, it was considerable depth that made the difference. The Greyhounds extended their own record from six to seven consecutive IHSAA state championships Feb. 27 at the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI. Carmel had three champions, half as many as 2020, and no state records, yet it still had more points (360) than in 2020 (331). Credit the legacy of Mitchell and Davis, Greyhounds coach Chris Plumb said.

“Mitchell and Davis helped create a sustainable culture of teamwork, the willingness to lift your teammates and high standards,” Plumb said.

Junior Ryan Malicki was the Greyhounds’ lone individual champion, winning the 100yard breaststroke in 53.71 seconds.

“Moving up from third (in 2020) to first felt amazing,” Malicki said. “Ever since last year’s meet, I really wanted to stand on top

Malicki was on the winning 200 medley relay team with freshman Carter Lancaster, junior Christopher Holmes and senior William Kok. “The medley relay was a completely new group of guys, except for me, and they did amazing. We each did our job and it worked out in the way we wanted, which was with a state championship,” said Malicki, who also was a member of the second-place 200 freestyle relay.

Carter Lancaster was joined on the Greyhounds’ state champion 400 freestyle relay with seniors Griffin Hadley and Augustus Rothrock and sophomore Kayden Lancaster.

Historical society planning 3-story museum to replace aging building on Monon

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel Clay Historical Society is planning to construct a three-story museum to replace its aging archive building in a prime spot along the Monon Greenway.

The Carmel City Council’s land use committee members got a look at the plans, which are still preliminary and subject to change, during their March 1 meeting as they discussed rezoning the .2-acre site from residential to C2 mixed-use. The full city council approved the rezone — described by one councilor as “housekeeping” — later in the evening.

The 15,000-square-foot museum is proposed to have space for galleries and exhibits, community meeting space, public restrooms, archives, a gift shop and a rooftop garden that can be rented out for private events. The historic Monon Depot Museum, which served as a train depot from 1883 until 1974, will remain in place to the north of the building.

“This project has been on our wishlist for 10-plus years,” CCHS President Dan McFeely said. “There has never been any indication from any of our board members to ever get rid of this land, and we have had offers.”

A PLACE TO ‘TRULY EXPERIENCE HISTORY’ The building is set to be primarily funded through Clay Township, which has set aside $4 million through its impact program for the project. An additional $2.5 million to upgrade the facade from brick to Indiana limestone has been proposed as part of $25 million in redevelopment bonds under consideration by the Carmel City Council.

said the township has long supported CCHS and its mission.

McFeely, who also works in the City of Carmel’s department of community relations and economic development, said the scope of the project will depend on how much funding is ultimately committed from the township and city. He expects CCHS to launch a fundraising campaign this spring to cover displays and other features inside the building.

“Our big challenge is, while (the township and city) are dealing with the bricks and mortar or limestone and mortar, we want to be sure we’re going to be ready to have a nice, functional place where people can come in and truly experience history,” he said.

McFeely is hopeful the museum can break ground this spring and be complete late this year or early 2022.

‘WE LITERALLY HAVE NO LEVERAGE’ The council approved the rezoning of the property at 211 1st St. SW from residential to C2 mixed-use as a “housekeeping” matter, according to councilor Kevin “Woody” Rider, because CCHS will deed the property to Clay Township for construction. Because the township is a government entity, it is not subject to zoning restrictions.

The mixed-use zoning will allow the museum to be an approved use when the township deeds the property back to CCHS after the bonds are retired. Before the rezone, CCHS had received variances to operate on the residential site.

The museum is projected to be 40 feet tall, which exceeds the 35 feet permitted in C2 zoning adjacent to residential property. It also is planned to be closer to the adjacent residential property than typically permitted, although the property owner told the committee she could accept that if it will discourage people from cutting through her yard.

Some councilors expressed concern about the project’s impact on neighbors but acknowledged that’s solely in the township’s hands because it can build the museum no matter the zoning.

“We literally have no leverage with this vote,” Rider said.

“With the bond money, we have leverage with the facade of the building, but in reality, it’s up to the township and the historical society to work with the neighbors. We will literally have no say in it.”

Rider pointed to the Carmel Dads’ Club fieldhouse, another project primarily funded by the township, as an example of the township’s ability to address concerns of neighboring residents. That project initially met fierce resistance but is now under construction at Mark Badger Memorial Park.

“The last time I did this, I made promises that I kept, but it ended up adding almost half a million dollars to the project cost and delayed the project almost six months. The township is not willing to do that again,” Snyder said. “We will work with the neighbors, we will get this project built beautifully and on budget, and we won’t as a township approve a design until we feel the neighbors are satisfied.”

GOOD NEIGHBORS? The rezoning of the Carmel Clay Historical Society’s land along the Monon Greenway leaves only one parcel along the trail in Midtown zoned as residential: The GOAT, a tavern immediately to the south.

The rezone was initially proposed to include both sites, but The GOAT parcel was dropped because several city councilors indicated they would not support a rezone of the property until the tavern could prove it could be a good neighbor. After The GOAT opened in summer 2020, the city began receiving complaints about its patrons being noisy late into the night, littering in the area and trespassing onto private property to urinate, vomit and more.

Jane Fleck, who lives adjacent to the CCHS site, said noise from The GOAT has rendered her patio useless. She said her main concern with the museum is additional noise from events in the rooftop garden, which has a maximum capacity of 149.

“We have up to 300 (people) behind us (now), so that’s close to 500 people,” she said. “Even without music, it is unbelievable how loud that is.”

The museum is planned to include a privacy wall on the west side of the rooftop garden to prevent noise from traveling toward the neighborhood.

Let OPE remain a place to learn

Commentary by Terry Anker The warning signs are there. One cannot deny it. Still, we hold out confidence on the off-hand chance that the indications are false. What else do we have?

Hope is the last resort, right? We’ve all been confronted with an approaching inevitability and stood frozen, contemplating that which is about to happen.

Life is going to change. A seemingly irreversible event will soon occur. But just as certainly, we’ve all been blessed with the invariable and then escaped its noose. Somehow, the certainty didn’t happen.

So, as we go through this all-tooshort life of ours, can we hang on to an optimism that will help us persevere, if not wholly overcome, overwhelming odds and yet not become the chump eager to overlook the highly likely, if not already impending, doom that awaits?

As we mature, life teaches myriad lessons. We learn that those who play with fire often get burned. We learn that our teens years, for most of us, anyway, are not the optimal time to start a single-parent household. We learn that the credit card companies, like gambling establishments, are really not looking out for our investment futures!

But some of us do manage to light a match without getting torched. In fact, the sulfur-tipped little sticks can be very handy tools. Another exception to the rule is wagering. Against stacked odds.

Someone wins the lottery. Someone wins the college basketball game. Someone wins roulette. At the very least, we imagine that someone must win.

As the passing years transform us from hopeful and naïve youth into something that looks like a seasoned decision-maker, how do we avoid cynicism?

If too much distrust leaves us alone, does too little make us a fool?

A well-timed epiphany Commentary by Danielle Wilson Last weekend, I was super excited to ship my goddaughter her first Communion gift.

It’s a rather obnoxious holoHUMOR gram of Christ and two lambs in an ornate gilded frame that my family sends around to whichever household is celebrating a sacrament. But as I was hauling it to the van, I realized I’d left my purse sitting on the kitchen table.

So, I set it on the driver’s seat and ran back inside. Upon my return, I saw “Him” sitting there. Oh, my god! Jesus was literally behind the wheel! Well played, hologram. Well.

Played.

I most certainly have been caught up lately worrying about stuff that is absolutely outside my control, such as unhappy college kids, a challenging school environment, scheduling my father’s memorial service, to name a few. But the fact is, we are still living in a pandemic, and there is not a darn tootin’ thing I can do to change that.

My co-eds are not having the time of their lives, and one is downright miserable.

Tough stuff, my darlings. I can offer advice and, if necessary, a hug, but you’ll need to forge your own path here. As for my admittedly sucky teaching right now, I must acknowledge that I am doing the best that I can while juggling in-person and remote learners simultaneously on an alternating block schedule, and that it will have to be good enough. And though I desperately need closure with Dad’s passing, it simply isn’t safe or responsible to hold the kind of funeral he wanted.

So, Jesus, I’m handing my worries to you.

Take the wheel!

Starting in June 2021, Orchard Park Elementary will be empty, and as of now, Carmel Clay Schools has no (anounced) plans for the building after it becomes vacant. As a student residing in the City of Carmel, I think Carmel Clay Schools should allow Wisdom Builders to rent the building as an official meeting place.

Allowing Wisdom Builders to rent Orchard Park Elementary would benefit Carmel. Wisdom Builders would lift a burden off of Carmel taxpayers since the property would receive income, Wisdom Builders would be able to maintain the value of Orchard Park Elementary by upkeep of the property and Wisdom Builders would utilize the building the way it was made to be used. Why have a building just sit there rather than it be a place where students could learn and grow in new ways?

My old dictionary certainly didn’t have a definition of placemakers, so I Googled it and learned that placemaking is the process of creating quality places where people want to live, work, play and learn.

What the zat?

Editor, Have we heard enough of the F-word used in daily communications? Still occasionally included in my repertoire of verbal sophistication, I’ve denounced myself by contributing to the trash lingo of others. But now, the F-word is no longer the F-word.

Growing up, if the F-word was used, results were detrimental to our health: spanking, bar of soap in the mouth, hands swatted by our teacher, ear grabbing and shame, shame, shame. Now, the F-word has become glamorized, polished, accepted and almost admired.

It’s all over the media: In print, headlines, Twitter and is used to express myriad emotions. As a society, we’ve considerably lowered the decency bar to a level where the F-word is accepted. To improve our trash-talking thrill, I suggest a new word: “Zat.” Zat is innocuous and has no real meaning; therefore, Zat should have minimal offensive impacts. “Zat you!” “Zat this!” Repeat it aloud; it works and feels great.

Coincidentally, we can now use “WTZ” instead of “WTF” to abbreviate our trash talking!

Determining the exact cause of back pain can be difficult and at times frustrating for those suffering from severe, chronic back pain. Altered abdominal musculature, whether from deconditioning or obesity, clearly has a role in how we think about the prevention of back pain. Core strengthening exercises should be tailored for individual patients and providers should quickly recognize those patients with underlying diagnoses that preclude them from this therapy.

Foods that support foot health • Vitamin D and calcium: Foods with calcium support bone health and growth while you’re young. Then, as you age,

calcium-rich food can prevent osteoporosis and lower the risk for injuries like hairline foot fractures. Choose dairy products like cheese or milk, leafy greens such as spinach or broccoli or even sardines. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. For vitamin D, it’s probably best to add a daily supplement because it’s hard to meet the minimum daily requirements.

• Vitamin C: Many foot problems, including tendinitis and plantar fasciitis, develop

Guest violinist DePue will make long-awaited Carmel Symphony Orchestra debut

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Nearly a year to the day that violinist Zachary DePue was scheduled to make his Carmel Symphony OrchesCONCERT tra debut, he will finally take the stage.

During rehearsals, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and the March 14, 2020, concert was one of many canceled.

So, DePue will be a guest artist when CSO performs at 7:30 p.m. March 13 at the Palladium at The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. A live audience of more than 400 will be permitted, allowing for social distancing among the 1,600 seats. A livestream also will be available.

DePue, an Indianapolis resident known for his high-energy performance, is well known to central Indiana audiences, having served 11 seasons as concertmaster with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

He also is a founding member of the ISO’s first ensemble-in-residence, the international sensation Time for Three, with whom he performed for 15 years. Since leaving the ISO in 2018, he has been a guest concertmaster and performer.

“Just everything you can imagine until the pandemic hit. Now, I’m just a grocery shopper,” said DePue, somewhat jokingly.

“I was able to perform with my Indianapolis Quartet (Feb. 21), a string quartet. It was actually one of the first live audiences I played in front of for a year.”

DePue will be the featured soloist on Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” in the concert.

“I love playing it,” DePue said. “I’ve done it several times with the Indianapolis Symphony. I’ve done it in many different scenarios.

It’s a very famous war horse of classical music. There are so many recognizable melodies and material in ‘The Four Seasons.’

Familiarity helps. Especially in these times as people start coming back to the concert hall, there is something they recognize.

CSO Artistic Director Janna Hymes said “The Four Seasons” is the ideal vehicle to showcase DePue’s versatility and musical enthusiasm.

“Zach is such an incredibly gifted musician,” Hymes said. “He’s a natural talent.

I’m over the moon he’s going to be a soloist for us.”

Hymes said “The Four Seasons” has been featured in more than 100 movies and TV shows, and she can’t think of a program that would be better for bringing the orchestra back.

“It’s incredibly beautiful and well written,” she said.

Hymes said 32 members of the orchestra will be performing to allow for social distancing. The last time that many orchestra members could play together was November 2020, since the December livestream had to be limited.

“I’m excited and optimistic about the future and the fact we can have live per-

formances again,” Hymes said. “We’ll still wear our masks and be careful, but the fact we can bring back our orchestra to the Palladium, we are very relieved and excited.”

Eight dancers from Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre will perform during the “Winter” concerto, the movement of the Vivaldi piece.

“I saw their choreography and they are enchanting, and they are terrific,” Hymes said. “We love to collaborate.”

The second part of the concert will include Franz Schubert’s “Symphony No. 5 D. 485 in B-flat Major.”

“He wrote it when was 19 and he was in a very (Wolfgang Amadeus) Mozart mode,” Hymes said. “He was reveling in the genius of Mozart. This is a piece that sounds like Mozart with a twist. That year when he was 19, he wrote 200 pieces, and this is one of them. It’s very ebullient and upbeat.

This shows the whole orchestra because Vivaldi is only for strings.”

Dugan to perform at The Cat editorial@youarecurrent.com Like most performers, Carmel comedian Dave Dugan has had some long layoffs during the last year because of the COVID-19 gathering restrictions that began in mid-March 2020.

“You’d think after doing something for over half your life, getting back at it would be like riding a bike,” Dugan Dugan said. “I felt pretty rusty, but the positivity of getting back in front of a live audience made it relatively easy to get back with the flow. Plus, some of the material I had been doing for a while that I was sick of all of a sudden seemed fresh again.”

By mid-November 2020, restrictions and shutdowns returned, so there was another three months of canceled performances, Dugan said.

He finally returned to the stage in February. Now he is set for performances at The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, in Carmel at 7:30 p.m. March 12-13.

Huckleberry Funk brings high-energy show

Vocalist Dexter Clardy simply calls it “gritty R&B.” LIVESTREAM But really, there is nothing simple about the group’s high-powered blend of genres, ranging from rock to funk to hip hop and just about everything in between.

“Our music style over the years has grown significantly into what we like to call now ‘gritty R&B,’” Clardy said. “Merging all our inspirations into one sound can be a bit overwhelming sonically, at times, but as the years have gone by, we’ve zeroed in on a very high-energy, raw but clean and tight sound that we hope our listeners really feel.”

“I’ve been gravitating towards creating either very large or very small paintings,” she said. “I’ve got some cool mini abstracts that feel like jewels to me, small but exquisite, something you want to collect and display together. Over the next few months, I plan to have several sets to share.”

Couet’s background includes writing, video production and photography.

“I’ve spent years producing creative products that rely on composition, from brochures to web pages to videos,” Couet said. “So, when I started painting, composition was one area in which I was already experienced. Painting is wildly, cognitively challenging, so having that under my belt has been helpful.”

What to get: Roasted prime rib Price: $30 Anna’s take: Charleston’s is a long-standing restaurant off 146th Street in Carmel, and the best thing about it (besides the delicious menu items) is consistency.

Charleston’s has consistently offered high-quality meals for several years. When

you visit, you know you will receive great service and great eats. My favorite item was roasted prime rib. I know that sounds like a simple dish, but Charleston’s really makes it incredible. It’s so tender you can cut it with a butter knife. Also be sure to try the famous baked potato soup ($6), the shrimp cargot ($14) and the original chicken tender platter ($17). Charleston’s has several delicious salads for those seeking healthier options, such as the Walt’s Champagne Chicken Salad, which includes fruits and vegetables. For an excellent finish, order Adam’s cheesecake ($9), a beautifully light and fluffy take on cheesecake made in-house.

A column like an *NSYNC song Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt The closest thing to an *NSYNC lyric you’re going to get today is in this article.

It might sound crazy, but it isn’t a lie; today we’re reviewing GRAMMAR GUY the words “buy,” “bye” and “by.”

As much as I wanted to quote the chorus of *NSYNC’s turn-of-the-millennium chart-topper “Bye Bye Bye” word-for-word, I have some serious grammatical grumbles with the song’s subpar syntax.

The words “buy,” “bye” and “by” are easy to switch around, especially because they only require a few letters and they’re pronounced identically. It’s kind of like trying to distinguish the boy bands from the late ’90s and early aughts from each other — they all sound the same.

The primary definition of the word “buy” is to purchase something with money: Pat, I’d like to buy a vowel. If something is considered a bargain, someone might say it’s a “good buy.” Another definition of “buy” is to believe or accept something: Byron doesn’t buy the fact that the Apollo 11 crew landed on the moon.

The word “bye” has its own set of definitions. The primary definition of “bye” comes from the word “goodbye,” which is a compound word combining the words “good” and “bye.” The word “goodbye” originated as the contraction “Godbwye,” which was a shortened form of “God be with ye.” Today, we just say “bye,” but the word’s roots lie in the pious society of 16th-century England. “Bye” also can mean when a player or team advances to the next round of a competition without playing.

“By” may be the most versatile of this word trio. As a preposition, “by” means “near,” “toward,” “no later than” or to indicate the person who created a work, just to name a few. As an adverb, “by” can mean “past,” “near” or “aside.” “By” also can function as an adjective, meaning “being off the main route.” By golly, the word “by” can get by in just about any sentence!

Modern statues stand out in Old Havana squares Commentary by Don Knebel Statues recently placed on two historic Old Havana squares reflect a modern attitude in a nation not known for TRAVEL its openness.

The Plaza de San Francisco was built in the 16th century just west of the Port of Havana. Named after a Franciscan convent on the site, the square originally housed a market and later became notorious for its gambling activities, including cockfights. Today, Havana’s cruise ship terminal lies at the eastern edge of the square. As more visitors began arriving in the area, the government undertook efforts to give the square a less austere look.

On May 25, 2012, the city dedicated a statue titled “La Conversacion,” or “The Conversation,” created by a French sculptor and donated to Cuba by the French ambas-

Owner reserves the right to hold any or all Bids for a period of not more than sixty (60) days after the date on which the Bids are opened and, for such sixty (60) day period, all such Bids shall be in full force and effect.
