Carmel releases schedule of nearly 40 road projects for 2017

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com The City of Carmel has a lot of road work ahead. Nearly 40 projects are scheduled for 2017.

“The City of Carmel transportation has a very aggressive construction schedule for 2017 and it will be important for you to plan ahead to make sure your regular routes are available, and if not, to determine your best detour before you head out the door,” stated a news release announcing the project schedule.

All of these projects have already been funded through a $229 million bond package approved in January 2016.

For updates on which projects have started or been delayed and detours, the city is advising

people to visit carmellink.com or download the CarmelLink app for smartphones.

The city will add multi-use paths in the South West Clay area, along with stormwater improvements, primarily along Ditch Road, Towne Road and Shelborne Road. Stormwater improvements also will take place in the Crooked Stick area, which is expected to be completed by mid-July 2017. A new path is being constructed along West Carmel Drive and road improvements will take place this month along Spring Mill Road between Millridge Drive and 106th Street. It will take about three months to reconstruct that road. The city also announced that the 126th Street road improvements will continue into summer 2017 but traffic will be maintained in the westbound direction for the duration of the project.

Dispatches Honor veterans — The City of Carmel invites the public to honor military veterans by participating in its Freedom Circle Walkway.

Invest in the project by purchasing a brick paver to be placed in the sidewalk of the Veterans Memorial in Carmel City Center. A 4x8 paver is $50 and an 8x8 paver is $100.

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A pro-life poster that Carmel High School officials removed in November is once again on display. education After weeks of discussions between Carmel Clay Schools officials and representatives of the CHS Teens for Life Club, CCS reversed its decision and allowed the students to rehang the poster for 10 consecutive school days beginning Feb. 23.

“Our decision to allow the sign to return is not the school’s endorsement of the message any more than our decision to remove the sign was the school’s rejection of that message,” David Day, general counsel for the CCS Board of Education, stated in a press release.

“While we believe our decision to remove the sign can be supported if challenged in court, we prefer to use the time and resources of the school district focusing on education, not litigation.”

The poster features hearts representing 3,000 abortions that occur each day and the word “Abortion” with the “b” and “r” replaced with “d” and “p” to spell “Adoption.” School officials removed and discarded the poster after a student complained it was offensive. The Teens for Life Club members have recreated the poster for display.

Liberty Counsel, a legal advocacy group, agreed to represent the club after the poster

was removed and threatened a lawsuit against Carmel Clay Schools.

“Carmel High School officials engaged in unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination and undoubtedly violated the Carmel Teens for Life members’ free speech by throwing away their sign,” Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, stated in a press release.

“Not only did they censor protected speech, they threatened students with retaliation if they sought legal counsel. The school officials were clearly wrong in this case. But, with Liberty Counsel’s help, the students have secured the right to hang their sign, which they had a right to do all along. Despite what the school district now claims, the students always followed the rules and would have won in court.”

CCS stated that it removed the poster because school officials did not believe it met club signage guidelines and had not received the appropriate administrative approval.

Club members dispute that, stating on their Facebook page Feb. 22 that they “did follow guidelines and gain prior required approval beforehand.”

CHS has since clarified its signage rules and the approval process. Clubs are allowed to advertise their meetings on signs but are not permitted to promote an agenda or cause.

The Teens for Life faculty sponsor has stepped down from the club, and another high school teacher has volunteered to serve as club sponsor.

3rd straight title for swim team

“We’ve been coming here a long time with the boys where every race counted and we were hanging on to every swim,” Plumb said.

“To have a team this deep and this experienced was a great accomplishment.

The Greyhounds captured their third consecutive state championship and sixth in eight years in dominating fashion, topping secondplace Zionsville 359 to 229 Feb. 25 at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI. It was the 17th boys state title for Carmel, the sixth under Plumb.

The 359 points were the second-most in the boys swimming state finals history. The state record is 369, set by the Greyhounds in 2003.

“The depth they have is monstrous, it’s terrifying,” Zionsville swimmer Jack Franzman said. “It’s like going against an army.”

Texas, captured the 100 freestyle in a staterecord time of 43.20 seconds.

Kibler and senior Charles Vaughan and juniors Andrew Couchon and Stefano Batista won the 200 freestyle relay in a state-record time of 1:21.21.

Kibler, Vaughan, freshman Wyatt Davis and junior Brett Sherman also won the 400 freestyle relay.

“We’ve worked so hard all season,” Kibler said.

“The team atmosphere we have makes it so much easier to work hard day in and day out.”

Davis finished second in the 500 freestyle and then won the 100 backstroke. He was only the second freshman to win the 100 backstroke at state.

Hoops event aids O’Connor House

By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com The O’Connor House in Carmel will host its annual fundraising event, Basketball Madness, March 10 at Ritz Charles.

Fundraiser The O’Connor House is a nonprofit organization with a mission of providing a Christian home to help single, pregnant, homeless women to improve life for themselves and their children.

“They can live at the house for up to 18 months. What we hope to do is really help them improve their lives for the long haul,” O’Connor House Development Assistant Kristi Lammers said. “They can stay during and after their pregnancy. We focus on helping them to heal and helping them be prepared to get out of poverty and live independently.”

The casual event coincides with March Madness. Guests are encouraged to wear their favorite team’s jersey.

“We call it our Celebration of Life Basketball Madness event,” O’Connor House Development Director Nancy Imhoff said. “The really great thing about it is that it is a fun, casual event.

We actually bring in almost a full-size basketball court.”

The event will offer games, a silent auction and food but also insight into what the

City awards funds to art groups

By Renee Larr news@currentincarmel.com For the past 15 years, the City of Carmel has provided financial support in the form of grants to Cargrants mel arts groups. Recently, the city awarded $914,500 to 21 different organizations.

“That number represents about 1 percent of the city budget and comes out of our general fund,” Mayor Jim Brainard said. “Since 2004, the city has awarded more than $9.2 million.”

The groups chosen to receive funding must be nonprofit, tax-exempt, and have programs that benefit the city.

Each organization was given a different amount based on a selection process.

“Awarding these arts grants each year is a very careful process where the applications, uses of funds, operating budgets and supporting financial information are reviewed,” Brainard said. “The arts organizations provide year-end reports on the use of city grant funds, and all organizations must sign and comply with the city’s Arts Grant Program Agreement.”

The Carmel Clay Historical Society is digging up stories from Carmel’s past by hosting monthly newspaper indexing sesCCHS sions at the Monon Depot Museum.

“Indexing the newspaper is a great way to learn about Carmel’s history and growth,” CCHS historian Katherine Dill said. “If someone’s been here for a while, they will be sure to read about events they lived through and people they know. It can be a nostalgic experience.”

Recently indexed headlines include “Carmel, Westfield continue to argue,” and “Settlers Drawn by Hamilton’s Riches.” Other stories covered the induction of Flowing Well Park and the Blizzard of ’78 from the Carmel Topics and The Carmel Daily Ledger.

CCHS is indexing the newspaper to make the articles more accessible. Dill said the papers will not be digitized because of complications with copyright and costs. She said even if CCHS does get permission to digitize the papers, it would still need to find an organization with a large scanner and that the process would be costly.

Medical History Musuem and deputy director of the Indiana Historical Society, said indexing the newspaper will help cut down research time significantly.

The indexed newspaper will be available at the Indiana State Library on microfilm and can be viewed for free via the Carmel Clay Public Library’s interlibrary loan.

The community is encouraged to donate newspapers for indexing to CCPL and can contact the CCHS prior to donating to ensure copies do not already exist.

CCHS celebrates ’77 hoops team

By Heather Collins • news@currentincarmel.com The Carmel Clay Historical Society will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Carmel High School basketball state event championship with an exhibit and reunion event.

CCHS collaborated with the Carmel Public Library Digital Media Lab to create a video highlighting the 1977 CHS championship game.

The final product will be shown at 4:30 p.m.

March 21 at Flix Brewhouse at an event celebrating the 1977 team. A 7 p.m. showing has already sold out. Former players from the team will share stories from the tournament, and the event will conclude with a community pep session.

“It was Carmel’s own ‘Hoosier’ moment,” said Deborah Clark Gangstad, CCHS volunteer.

Gangstad’s father, Eric Clark, was head coach of the 1977 championship team.

“This is a wonderful event for people to relive that happy moment in our community’s history,” Gangstad said.

Ganstad said the 1977 CHS team went into the championship game as an underdog.

Let time be on your side Commentary by Jim Serger If you told me Jennifer Aniston’s movie debut also is voted her worst role ever taken — I would believe you. Time is plain talk a comical thing to contemplate. We want it to speed up and/or slow down. We want it to be Friday on Monday, we want it to be summer instead of winter, we want it to be the end of the school year or we want to hurry up and be 16.

There are 1,440 minutes in a day, or 525,600 minutes in a year. That is a slew of minutes.

Ever stare at a clock? Seems as if time slows to almost a complete stop. But if you’re out on a good date, time just seems to fly by. Where did the time go?

On March 12 we will spring forward our clocks — we will lose one hour of sleep. Not really, we gain it back Nov. 5. So in reality we just break even. We get excited about the word spring. It means: outside, windows open, bike rides, the scent of cut grass, the scent of new mulch, the sounds of birds, kids playing off in the distance and of course, golf and baseball.

In the film "Leprechaun," this little green guy is hunting for his gold, and he’s not going to let anyone stand in his way of discovering

it. A very silly film, but a role the young Jennifer Aniston had to take. Father Time holds an hourglass for us all. Time will pass, but what we do with our time is up to us. So we lose an hour — but we gain daylight.

Forward and onward we go; spring forward will be here soon, as well as the festivities of St. Patrick’s Day. But as we wait patiently, time will pay us back. Through effort, hard work, commitment and grit, we can actually make time work for us. Some things do happen in an instant. Others worth waiting for do require time.

March 17 is right around the corner. Think about this for a second. We never would have heard of Rachel Green had Jennifer said "no" to the silly role. Life is about doing something today with our time, and tomorrow we will thank ourselves for doing it. Time, it’s all relative if we don’t make first-class use of it. Use it to your advantage, and your life will grow in a pot-of-gold.

Fashion show supports Cambodia

By Heather Collins • news@currentincarmel.com Grace Church will host a fashion show March 10 for mothers and daughters, and attendees will learn how Fundraiser they can support women in Cambodia and help prevent human trafficking.

During the event, 24 students from local high schools and their mothers will model clothing from byTavi Fashion. The clothing line offers fair trade garments, empowering the women of Cambodia.

Host Tasha Simons of Carmel said she has a passion for encouraging students to get excited about efforts to stop human trafficking.

In 2012, Simons went on an exploratory trip to Cambodia to see how Grace Church could partner with the Center for Global Impact. During her trip, she visited the byTavi workshop and met Tavi. Through CGI’s assistance, Tavi was able to receive seamstress training and start her own shop in Cambodia.

At byTavi’s workshop, teenagers create the byTavi fair trade clothing line and the older women create handbags. The items are sold in the U.S. with the funds supporting women in Cambodia and efforts to prevent human trafficking.

Wife’s survival drives Wally Veazie to bring spiritual musical to Carmel

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For Wally Veazie, the power of prayer proved to be a miraculous force in his life.

At 2 a.m. Sept. 27, 2013, his wife Pam, cover story then 43, suffered a major stroke and had blood clots in her lungs.

“Pam fell and hit the dresser with her chin, and the rattling of the drawer handle woke me up, which is amazing to me because I’m a pretty solid sleeper,” Veazie said.

Paramedics weren’t sure what the cause was, wondering aloud if it was a bad drug reaction. Pam struggled to tell them she hadn’t taken anything.

“I thought I could talk, but I couldn’t,” Pam said.

The paramedics suggested she be taken to St.Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, even though it wasn’t the closest hospital to their Carmel home.

Although Veazie didn’t know it initially, Pam was given Last Rites that morning. That set off a chain of events that spurred Veazie to bring the spiritual musical “The Cross and the Light” to Carmel High School this month.

That journey began with Veazie spending hours in the hospital chapel as Pam clung to life.

Dr. Kannan Natarajan, an interventional radiologist, was called in when Pam arrived at St.Vincent’s intensive care unit.

“Over 60 percent of the patients would not have made it,” Natarajan said. “So I feel like God was looking out for her.”

For the Veazie family, Pam’s ability to walk and talk is a miracle after spending three weeks in the hospital and four weeks in a rehab hospital. She still has some limitations on the right side of her body.

“You try not to think that you are negotiating with God, saying if you do this for me, I’ll do this for you,” Veazie said.

Veazie experienced a revelation while praying at the foot of the chapel cross. He said he felt a calling from God. Listening to a Catholic radio show in September 2015, Veazie heard Kelly Nieto interviewed about a musical she created.

Nieto, a 1987 Miss America runner-up, wrote a musical on Christ’s crucifixion through Pentecost.

“I went home and watched the videos, and it made me emotional,” Veazie said. “I thought this is beautiful. I learned it’s a group that comes to local arenas.”

Veazie realized this might be his path to fulfill his promise to God. Veazie, Pam and their three children, ages 14 to 18, saw the show in the Detroit area in March 2016. He was sold and became determined to bring the show to Carmel.

Nieto started a small version of the musical in 2002. The first professional production was in Detroit in 2011. It has gone from a large cast to seven cast members and returned to primarily playing churches.

“I spent 35 years wanting nothing to do with God,” Nieto said. “I was an agnostic New Ager until I had a very intense conversion experience when I heard my mother was going to die. I pretty much bartered for her life. I said I don’t know who you are or what you are, but I’ll give you the rest of my life to keep her alive and show me the truth.”

After her mother’s survival, she became a born-again Baptist. Two years later in 2000, she became a Catholic.

Distortions can be fixed The current political climate is proving brutal for everyone. Distortions are happening on both sides of the political spectrum.

Learning to have constructive conversation with the “other side” rather than the divisive distorted banter relies on the average citizen being thoughtful of our words. Challenging distortions is not a call for political correctness. Distortions offer dramatic effect but cannot offer the clarity necessary to see both sides of an issue. In his book “Feeling Good,” Dr. David Burns described a list of 11 Cognitive distortions. The three distortions I see most often in my political discussions are: • All-or-nothing thinking — You see things in black-and-white categories.

• Mental filter — You pick out a single, negative detail and dwell on it exclusively so that your vision of all reality becomes darkened.

• Labeling — When someone else’s behavior rubs you the wrong way, you attach a negative label to him: “He’s a loser.”

Whether you are interacting on social media, reading an editorial or listening to a pundit, I believe it is imperative to our public discourse that we acknowledge when others are clouding the issues with these types of distortions. By acknowledging distortions, we could move our conversations to the richer details indicative of sound policy addressing the concerns of all citizens.

Government policy should reflect a spectrum and not just one side. We need diversity in thought to make our communities strong and receptive.

Loving in two hearts Commentary by Terry Anker Families are complicated – even when they are not. Most of us have a dad and mom.

Well, we all, by the recipe, “must” have at least one of each to get the process started.

Once begun, there are any number of combinations that meet the standard. Sometimes, we participated at the origin – the ones that conceived and remained, choosing a mate, marrying and eventually setting our sights on shared parenthood. Others arrange family differently. But all focus, uninterrupted by the machinations of daily living, on delivering into the world one or more fully formed adult children ready to reproduce that which they have seen modeled at home – namely to propagate the species and bring forth another generation of us. There are countless among ourselves who stand up and carry the unrelenting yoke of parenthood.

None is better than the other. Yet, all are dedicated to survival in a sometimes hostile and inhospitable world by self-replicating and, in so-doing, continuing the line that

came before us. This month a good friend, long-ago adopted, reached out to his biological parents. Some 50 years ago, they, for many reasons, delivered an infant into the kind and willing hands of an adoptive family desperately awaiting his birth. But only now did that baby decide to announce his continuing existence to those whom he had imagined but not known.

Facebook made the connection. Messages were exchanged. Soon, regular telephone calls followed. Birth mother led to birth father led to step-siblings led to all manner of aunts, uncles and family penumbra. His “family” has long been firmly in place. Those who raised, loved and cared for him stand ready – still devoted – in earnest hope that his journey will fulfill. How do we live and love in two hearts?

Recently, I’ve developed a crush on Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I love her spunky, “I’ll never die” humor energy, and the fact that she does not take poop from anyone.

But what I admire most is her practical take on balancing work, motherhood and marriage.

Basically, she suggests that you allow each area of your life to serve as a refuge from the others, and that on occasion, you become deaf.

It is this second little nugget of wisdom upon which I would like to expound today, my dear readers, for in my infinite experience as a teacher, wife and parent, I’ve found that pretending not to hear muttered cuss words, murmured criticisms and stream-ofconsciousness rants by teenage girls proves to be a great advantage, cutting way down on my stress levels and, consequently, the amount of Prosecco needed to dull the edge.

Think about it. Are we always better off when we correct young people on their choice of vocabulary? Is it always mandatory to fully engage with a color guard member who is ranting about some rifle spin or saber toss that she just can’t manage to land?

Sometimes, I find myself so worked up by my students’ colorful profanity or my husband’s insensitive remarks or the fact that my daughter has been spewing play-by-play dance drama for 28 minutes straight that I lose perspective on the bigger things in life.

I literally get sucked into the negative comments and the bratty shenanigans and forget that all things considered, I’m OK. So, I’m going to continue to heed the advice of Justice Ginsburg and occasionally go deaf.

I’m going to tune out my children’s word vomit when they aren’t looking for answers but merely to vent. And I’m going to pretend not to hear when a high-schooler drops the Fbomb two feet from me because his signature hashtag has been co-opted.

Why vote for Gorsuch?

Editor, Hard-right Trump Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch is making nice with Democratic senators. He is distancing himself from Trump (and his own judicial record of favoring corporations over individuals and rolling back longstanding personal/ women’s rights and environmental protections).

At the same time, he is lavishing praise on Merrick Garland.

Remember Merrick Garland? He was nominated for the Supreme Court with more than 10 months remaining in President Obama’s term. Despite the Constitutional requirement that the president should nominate, and the Senate should vote on, Supreme Court vacancies, Republicans refused to hold a vote on Garland. They obviously considered him qualified, as a majority of them had previously approved him for the Court of Appeals.

Why no vote? Even Gorsuch knows that was a travesty of justice.

So, considering this, what reason can Republicans seriously offer to Democrats on why they should support Gorsuch? Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has none. If Hillary Clinton had won the presidency, and the Republicans had still retained control of the Senate, do you really think Republicans would hold a vote on any Democratic nominee? Of course not! They have already shown their disregard for the Constitution.

What should Congress do to preserve our democracy? Allow a vote on Merrick Garland now. He was nominated by the former president who won a majority of the votes cast in both of his elections. The will of the people must stand, regardless of politics and party loyalty. If another vacancy occurs on the court, that would be the appropriate time to vote on Gorsuch.

Poster should not be rehung

Editor, As a junior at CHS, However I firmly disagree with the decision to re-hang the offensive Teens for Life poster.

There are rules that have long been in place stating that club signs must only specify meeting times and dates rather than promoting a club’s agenda. If CHS can be bullied into changing its rules and views by a few adamant students who decided to get lawyers involved, where do we draw the line on our policy?

Additionally, this poster is just closed-minded and offensive (as the original complaint against it stated). There are situations where adoption is simply not a viable choice, a fact that the poster ignores. Furthermore, there is a difference between a fetus and a human being. If the students responsible for this poster truly want to save lives, they should look into helping save children who actually are alive and in need.

Furthermore, this poster is offensive to me as a woman. I (along with many of my fellow students) have voiced concerns that this poster promotes the limiting of a woman’s reproductive rights. The school has claimed that by hanging up this poster, they are not endorsing its message, but that becomes hard to believe when every time I look up from my lunch tray I am greeted by a giant poster telling me I shouldn’t have the right to choose what to do with my own body.

In the end, this poster is not about pro-choice versus pro-life or even the First Amendment. This is about basic decency and respect within a school setting. I am calling on the Teens for Life club to remove this poster and on the school to make all clubs follow the rules, whether or not they call in lawyers.

Zionsville Brunchies opts to not renew lease

Larry Hoover is hoping Brunchies regulars from his Zionsville restaurant will make the drive to Carmel. restaurant The Zionsville restaurant closed its doors Feb. 28 after five years in the Boone Village Shopping Center.

“My lease is up, and I just decided not to renew, just come back to my flagship store,” said Hoover, who owns the business with his wife, Jenny. “It did a good business (in Zionsville) and I’m hoping some of the people will come here, because it’s not that far.”

Hoover said they didn’t want to commit to another lease.

The flagship Brunchies, serving breakfast and lunch menu items, has been in Meridian Village Plaza, 13732 N. Meridian St., in Carmel for more than 11 years. The Zionsville restaurant was slightly larger.

Although there has been plenty of turnover in Meridian Village Plaza, and some businesses suffered during the heavy U.S. 31 construction period in 2014, Hoover said the

The Carmel-based company offers a job search app that will expand operations into 15 metro areas, including Chicago and Cincinnati, within the next 12 months.

WorkHere plans to do its hiring during the next five Seidle years.

Painting with a Twist in Carmel will celebrate its second anniversary March 11.

Owner Jeanne Shirley anniversary started the business with her husband, Bryan, after spending 30 years in advertising sales in Indianapolis.

“Before deciding to open one of these franchises, I had gone to a class and had so much fun,” Shirley said. “It was such a stress reliever.”

The concept of Painting with a Twist combines instructional art with friends, wine and a lively instructor. The company started in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina as a way to give back to the community. The business now has 325 franchise locations across the U.S., including the one in Carmel. An important company value is to be an active member of the community and focus on giving back.

“When I heard the story of how it was started, that was what got me interested,” Shirley said. “The cornerstone of the business is giving back to the community.”

The Carmel location at 301 E. Carmel Dr. has donated more than $10,000 to local charities through its Painting with a Purpose program,

including Beacon of Hope Crisis Center, YMCA, Dogs on Deployment, The Carmel Arts Council and several local schools.

Painting with a Twist also partners annually with the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer. It is the largest third-party donor to that charity.

To celebrate the second anniversary, the Shirleys will have their regularly scheduled classes, offering different specials and giving out gifts to each person who comes to a class March 11-12.

Harpist to visit Hussey-Mayfield March 14

By Sara Baldwin • editorial@youarecurrent.com Harpist and composer Jan Aldridge Clark will perform an Irish harp concert at the HusseyMayfield Memorial Library at 7 concerts p.m., March 14.

The concert comes just before Saint Patrick’s Day. Aldridge Clark will play traditional Irish tunes and sing in Gaelic on some songs as well as taking the audience on a musical journey that includes blues, Latin music and classic rock. Percussionist Michael Beck will join her in concert.

“I’m going to be doing some really famous, traditional Irish music. The Irish music will be played on a small electric harp. It has a different sound,” Aldridge Clark said. “It is not just dance music, but it’s also music of war. For many many years Ireland was at war with England.”

Beck and Aldridge Clark play their unique repertoire at several libraries around the state. Aldridge Clark said they plan to play songs by Ozzy Osborne, Nirvana and Metallica.

“It’s a great place to have a concert. Sound carries well in there,” said Orton Ortwein, the adult programming coordinator at Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Library.

Ortwein said Aldridge Clark was highly recommended by other promoters in Zionsville. Aldridge Clark was classically trained at the Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington and continued her master’s studies at California State University-Los Angeles, pursuing jazz studies. She has recorded multiple albums and performed at private parties and weddings of such high-profile clients as Sylvester Stallone, Tony Danza, Barbara Walters, John Mellencamp and Henry Kissinger.

“We’ve never had a harpist here before,” Ortwein said. “We do about four concerts a year at the library, and we always try to do something a little different. We also try to celebrate other cultures.”

Aldridge Clark will be available after the concert for a Q&A session and will have CDs for sale. Attendees must be 10 or older to attend. Registration is required.

The concert program was previously set, but Corcoran made one addition.

“I think it’s a great program. Obviously, Tchaikovsky has incredible work. The Elgar (piece) is one audiences aren’t as familiar with. The Strauss will be great. Mighty Mushroom Blended Burger Submitted photo and content courtesy of Family Features Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients: 1/2 pound any variety mushroom, 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided, 1 pound ground beef, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 4 buns Directions: Finely dice mushrooms or gently pulse in food processor.

In skillet, warm 1 tablespoon olive oil on medium-high heat and add mushrooms, cooking 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from heat and cool 5 minutes.

Transfer cooled mushrooms to medium bowl. Add ground beef and salt, mixing until combined. Make four patties.

Add remaining olive oil to pan and cook burger patties on medium-high heat until

internal temperature reaches at least 160 F. Plate and add desired toppings to bun.

Recommended toppings include: pickled red peppers, crumbled blue cheese and watercress greens.

Where’s Amy had a blast zippin’ down a huge chocolate slide, dancing with dinosaurs, hanging out with Indianapolis’ favorite sports teams while sampling delicious food and spirits all under the big top last month at the Children’s Museum. From 8 p.m. until midnight, adults goofed around and played like kids at the annual event, Museum by Moonlight. Face painting and giant-sized Jenga and Yahtzee games were favorites among guests, but the highlight for many was riding the carousel, a piece of local history which turns 100 years old this year.

Yep, five floors of crazy fun had by all with no kids allowed, only kids at heart! The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is a nonprofit institution committed to creating extraordinary learning experiences across the arts, sciences and humanities that have the power to transform the lives of children and families. CIDE to present ‘Mixed Rep’

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The Central Indiana Dance Ensemble will give audiences a sneak preview of a dance that group members will perform dance at the Regional Dance America National Festival.

The Carmel-based pre-professional ballet company will present “Mixed Rep” at 4 p.m.

March 12 at Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre in Carmel.

Vicki Burdick, a CIDE board member in charge of marketing, said the dances include a mixed repertoire of pieces from modern to classical. Many have been choreographed exclusively for CIDE by nationally renowned choreographers Eddy Ocampo, Derek Reid and Ashley Walton. The national festival for dancers will be held May 2 to 6 in Phoenix.

“The chance to work with these types of choreographers is an amazing experience for the dancers,” CIDE Artistic Director Suzann DeLay said. “Of the three pieces, one of them has been selected to go on to our national festival.”

Burdick said the national festival gives CIDE the chance to perform in front of nationally recognized choreographers and ballet directors from across the U.S. “It gives us the opportunity to showcase

A new Carmel restaurant will offer cuisine, beer and wine targeted toward a 21-and-older crowd. Stompin Barley, 14560 dining River Rd., Suite 140, opened Feb. 21.

Executive Chef Kyle Allbright, who formerly worked at the Oceanaire Seafood Room in Indianapolis, said menu items will be made from scratch and locally sourced.

“What I’m trying to do with my food is pretty much take downtown (Indianapolis) and bring it to Carmel, because nobody else is doing the from-scratch-type of deal,” said Allbright, a Fishers resident. “So we are getting away from the corporate chain feel and bringing people to a nice place to come in and have some wine, grab some good food and keep it reasonably priced.”

The price range is $6-15 for appetizers and small plates and $12-27 for entrees. Menu options include duck confit, seared scallops piccata, cedar plank salmon, various sliders, tacos and more.

The goal was to design two areas that work together to create function and flow for this high-traffic area.

1. The updated laundry room offers fresh lines, easy to maintain granite counter tops and multiple built-in folding areas.

2. The mudroom area was redesigned to specifically suit the family’s needs. Cabinet drawers were installed below, doubling as a bench. In the center, the family needed open cubbies with hooks for coats and bags. The closed cabinets above add a versatile storage option.

3. The drum pendant light for this space gives the laundry room a causal, yet modern feel.

4. A bold, contrasting, sliding barn door provides a visual barrier between the two areas, while maximizing the usable space.

This is the perfect solution for this clean, functional space.

Before Background Info: This house is in the Village of West Clay in Carmel. Even though it was built in 2004, it lacked the functionality and convenient features that a busy family needs in a custom, updated mudroom.

Before problems: Common characteristics of intermediate spaces is that they are not used efficiently, which creates multi-purpose areas that become crowded and hard to maintain. The owners wanted to redefine their laundry room and mudroom into clean, functional and efficient areas that work together.

No late bids will be accepted.

All bids and proposals shall be properly and completely executed on the proposal forms provided with the plans and specifications, which will include the non-collusion affidavit as required by the State of Indiana. The bid envelope must be sealed and have the words “BID – Rangeline Road and City Center Drive Roundabout” A bid bond or certified check in an amount not less than ten percent (10%) of the amount bid must be submitted with each bid. A one hundred percent (100%) performance and payment bond will also be required of the successful bidder. It is intended that actual construction of all work divisions shall be started as soon as practicable, and each bidder shall be prepared to enter promptly into a construction contract, furnish a performance bond, and begin work without delay in the event the award is made to him.

The Project consists of, but is not necessarily limited to, the following: Converting the existing signalized four-way intersection at Rangeline Road and City Center Drive to a multi-lane roundabout.

Contract Documents for the Project have been assembled into one bound project manual, which together with drawings, may be examined at the following locations: City of Carmel Department of Engineering - 1st Floor One Civic Square Carmel, IN 46032 (317) 571-2441 Copies of such drawings and project manuals must be obtained from Reprographix (Reprographix.com). Payments and costs of Contract Documents are non-refundable.

Bidders shall assure that they have obtained complete sets of drawings and Contract Documents and shall assume the risk of any errors or omissions in bids prepared in reliance on incomplete sets of drawings and Contract Documents.

This Project will be funded by the City of Carmel.

A pre-bid conference for discussions of the Project, the bidding requirements and other important matters will be held on Wednesday March 8th, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. EST in the Caucus Room on the 2nd Floor of City Hall (One Civic Square). All prospective bidders are invited to attend the pre-bid conference. The pre-bid conference is not mandatory.
