Rezone approved for hospital, offices

Developers initiated the rezoning request in September 2018 to accommodate new corporate and clinical offices for Methodist Sports Medicine and the Franciscan Health Orthopedic Center of Excellence, but the process hit a roadblock when several city councilors said they would not approve the project without a commitment to permanent taxes. Most hospitals in Indiana operate as nonprofits and are exempt from paying property taxes.

The campus includes 12 adjacent acres to the south already zoned for the development.

The resolution, added to the city council agenda less than two hours before the meeting, states that Carmel will give BraunAbility a 75 percent property tax abatement for 10 years, attributable to capital improvements and equipment installed on the property at 645 W. Carmel Dr. The abatements only apply to an increase in the site’s assessed value that occurs as a result of development.

BraunAbility expects to spend $7.5 million to improve an existing 18,000-square-foot office building and add the 20,000-square-foot research center. The new office is expected to open by June with the technology center set to open in 2020.

Approximately 110 employees making an average of $90,000 per year are expected to relocate to Carmel, and the company plans to hire 68 new employees at an average of $92,000 per year.

City officials have typically avoided offering tax abatements. But in this case, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said it made sense and that he expects the company’s highly paid employees to provide a boost to other local businesses.

“We had to do it for competitive reasons (considering) other jurisdictions they may have moved to,” Brainard said. “It fills an emp-

ty building, builds a new building for us and doesn’t cost us anything because (infrastructure and emergency) services are already being provided to this area.”

Brainard said the abatements are estimated to save $81,000 per year during the decade for BraunAbility, but he added that 25 percent of the taxes the company will pay during that period is more than the city is receiving from the site now.

“I see it as a delay in getting the revenue that we otherwise wouldn’t have had,” Brainard said.

BraunAbility also is receiving up to $1.3 million in conditional tax credits for the project from the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

The city council is expected to hold a public hearing on the incentives before a final vote at its meeting set for 6 p.m. March 4 at City Hall.

City provides updates on road expansion, Brookshire Clubhouse

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel City Councilor Sue Finkam held a town hall meeting Feb. 7 to allow residents of the northeast district TOWN HALL to ask questions and hear presentations from several city and county officials.

Cherry Creek Boulevard expansion Work on a half-mile stretch of road to connect the two sides of Cherry Creek Boulevard has been delayed by weather and utility upgrades, but the project originally planned for completion in 2018 is expected to be done in June.

The project includes multi-use paths on both sides of the boulevard and a pedestrian crosswalk with flashing lights activated by a button.

Residents raised concerns about drivers speeding on the future boulevard and using it to cut through the area instead of taking 146th Street.

“I think Cherry Creek Boulevard is going to mainly be a roadway that connects everyone with the Legacy (development),” City Engineer Jeremy Kashman said. “I don’t envision a lot of people coming down River Road to Cherry Creek Boulevard to come across unless there’s an accident.”

Kashman said the city will monitor the impact of the project on Cherry Creek Boulevard throughout the process.

“Before and after the Cherry Creek Boulevard connection opens we will be collecting traffic data to look at the volume and speed in which traffic is traveling and look for any engineering solutions for any outlying concerns,” Kashman stated in an email. “We will also be comparing this data to how traffic data in other neighborhoods looks.”

Gray Road path connections The city also is working to complete the trail along Gray Road between 136th and 146th streets. Much of the path has already been constructed as part of nearby development.

“Our project will look to make those connections in areas in which a path does not currently exist,” Kashman said.

A pedestrian crossing is planned to connect the east and west sides of the path near the getGo Café + Market near 146th Street.

The city also is developing plans to install a trail along 136th Street between Keystone Parkway and Range Line Road.

Brookshire Golf Club Construction on the new clubhouse at Brookshire Golf Club continues, with the building expected to open by April or May. Brookshire Golf Course General Manager Bob Higgins said rebuilding the clubhouse has been a priority since he was hired in 2007. The previous building was constructed in 1970 when the course opened. The city purchased the golf course in 2006 for $2.6 million.

The club’s golf carts will be stored beneath the new building instead of in various areas throughout the course, which Higgins said is a huge benefit to his employees. The $10 million project also includes a 25-meter swimming pool.

Township eyes park improvements

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Several Carmel parks have been targeted for significant upgrades thanks to the Clay Township Board approving RECREATION resolutions Feb. 5 to fund approximately $18 million for improvements. Final approval is expected at the board’s March meeting.

Major improvements are planned at West, Inlow, Meadowlark, Carey Grove, River Heritage and Flowing Well parks.

“All of these parks are at end-of-life with playgrounds, trails and parking, so it frees (Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation) up to help build their coffers to maintain what is the No. 1 parks department in the country,” Clay Township Board President Matthew Snyder said.

With portions of staggered payments for the Monon ComSnyder munity Center coming off the township’s debt load, the bonds to finance the improvements are not expected to raise the tax rate.

Township and CCPR officials looked at the CCPR master plan to determine which projects to

fund. Improvements include: • West Park — Playground and splash pad replacement • Meadowlark Park — Playground replacement, new bridge and fishing pier, signage • Carey Grove Park — Playground replacement, community garden, trail enhancements, signage • River Heritage Park — Playground upgrades, trail enhancements • Inlow Park — Splash pad replacement, playground upgrades • Flowing Well Park — Path expansion, wetlands remediation, bank stabilization Design work is expected to begin on the West, Meadowlark and Carey Grove parks projects this year with construction likely to begin in 2020.

Design work for the other parks is expected to take place in 2020.

“What makes it really exciting to me is (the township’s allocation) frees up some of our existing funding sources so we can move them up on the schedule,” CCPR Director Michael Klitzing said.

Kllitzing said top priorities are the White River Greenway expansion, enhancements to the roundabout within Central Park near the 111th Street entrance and development of a master plan for the undeveloped Cherry Tree Park.

City to welcome Home Place residents

The City of Carmel will become fully responsible for providing services to Home Place March 1, and it will mark the occasion by providing an opportunity for Home Place residents to meet city officials and ask ANNEXATION questions the next day.

The Home Place Welcome Celebration is set for 1 to 3 p.m. March 2 at the John W. Hensel Government Center, 10701 N. College Ave. The free event will include refreshments, activities for children and representatives from various city departments available to speak with Home Place residents about issues affecting the neighborhood.

“We want to get all the department heads down there and make sure that people living in those areas get to meet them and know who to call if they have a question,” Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said. “It’s also an opportunity for city officials to listen to their concerns and hopes and aspirations for their neighborhood.”

Carmel annexed the 1,017-acre community on March 1, 2018, after a 12-year court battle. The yearlong delay in providing services allows the city to begin collecting tax revenue to fund them. Carmel has already been providing many services to Home Place, such as fire protection and water. Other services, such as those offered by the Carmel Police Dept. and the street department, fully kick in March 1.

Brainard said the event is designed to promote transparency about city services and projects with some of Carmel’s newest residents.

“We want to talk about those ideas with the people that live in the area and see what their thoughts are,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for us to listen.”

Runners prep for Olympic Trials

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Anna Weber is eager for another crack at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

“It’s the only CARMEL MARATHON place where you can see where you stand against the best marathoners in the country,” she said.

Weber, 30, who ran track and cross country for Marquette University, quit running for a couple years but started again while working on a master’s degree at Indiana University.

“Turns out I was a decent marathoner,” Weber said. “I decided to try for the 2016 Olympics Trials (in Los Angeles) and qualified. I finished in 56th. I’ve been a professional runner ever since.”

Weber, who lives in Speedway and coaches runners online, qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials by finishing in second place in the Philadelphia Marathon in November 2018. Weber said a runner has to run the race in less than 2 hours and 45 minutes to qualify.

As part of her training, Weber will compete March 30 in the half-marathon in the ninth annual Carmel Marathon, which also offers 10K and 5K runs.

“I’ll be focusing on the 10K on the track this summer,” Weber said. “The half-marathon works well in my training schedule to get a good fitness check.”

Weber said her goal is to improve on her 2016 trials showing. The 2020 trials are Feb. 29, 2020, in Atlanta.

“I definitely didn’t have the best day (at the 2016 trials),” Weber said. “My overall goal would be to be in the top 15 at the trials.

I want to know how good I can be. I want to keep pushing my limits and what I can achieve.”

She doesn’t plan to run more marathons until the trials.

Elite runner Sara Bishop, from Dayton, Ohio, plans to compete in the half-marathon in Carmel as well.

“I’m using it as a tune-up race before the Boston Marathon (April 15),” Bishop said.

In 2015, Bishop ran the Boston Marathon but did not finish, completing 23 1/2 miles.

“So, I have some unfinished business,” Bishop said.

Bishop competed in the 800 meters for the Auburn University women’s track and field team.

“I ran cross country, but I wasn’t very good,” Bishop said. “I took eight years off from running and got back into it after I had kids.”

Bishop, 36, is a full-time running coach.

She has already qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon.

“Carmel is one of the races I recommend to my runners to come and run,” Bishop said. “It’s one of the fastest spring races.”

On the male side, Indianapolis resident Jesse Davis will compete in the full marathon in Carmel. Davis is attempting to qualify for the Olympic Trials for the third time.

Chalk up a success Carmel artist overcomes ADHD to become motivational speaker, performance artist

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Ben Glenn has made a living as a motivational speaker and performance artist.

Also known as The Chalkguy, Glenn COVER STORY uses chalk on a black 6-by-8-foot canvas to quickly create landscapes while an audience watches.

His artistic ability is a gift. Speaking in front of people is a skill he had to acquire.

“Believe it or not, public speaking is my greatest fear in life, and that’s what I ended up doing,” the Carmel resident said. “In the first year, I didn’t speak at all. My brother, Sam, did.”

Sam would talk while Glenn would dazzle the audience with the flashy chalk work.

“He challenged me, saying a lot of people wanted to know why you are doing this and where the art came from,” Glenn said.

Glenn said not many people did speed painting in the mid-1990s.

“Back then, it was a pretty crazy thing for people to see,” Glenn said. “Sam got tired of answering all the questions.

He said, ‘I’ll teach you how to speak and help you with your confidence if you teach me how to do art.’ He honored the deal. Every time when I get on that stage, I still get nervous. You just battle through it.”

Crucial to Glenn’s story is how he overcame his learning disabilities. He was diagnosed as learning disabled and having attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia in third grade. He struggled with reading comprehension and spelling.

“I was diagnosed as special. That’s why I wear these Superman shirts all the time,” Glenn said.

Sam, a motivational speaker and artist, lives in Carmel, too. Glenn and his brother are authors as well.

“His work is similar to what I do. I would say his priority is corporate venues,” Glenn said. “He does art, but not the same way. He does a little more painting.”

Glenn, 45, made the decision to leave Anderson University during his junior year and pursue performance art.

“The counselor said, ‘This college isn’t going anywhere. If God is opening a door, give it a shot,’” Glenn said. “That was 25 years ago and I never looked back.”

Many didn’t understand his decision to leave college.

“Everybody thought I was crazy. My mom thought I was nuts,” Glenn said.

His wife, Polina Osherov, was not one of them.

“I had every bit of faith that he’d make a career out of

the speaking and the art,” she said. “In fact, I could not envision him doing anything else. Everything involved with being an entertainer was a perfect fit with his skills and personality.”

Osherov has watched as Glenn now appears to be a natural.

“I believe that his apparent ease comes from having spoken so many times and over so many years,” she said. “Also, speaking to audiences as a 20-year-old is very different than doing it when you’re 30 or 40 years old. There’s definitely a much greater confidence now that what he has to share has

depth and value, just by virtue of age and maturity.”

At first, much of Glenn’s work was with youth groups, church camps and basketball camps. The word spread and jobs kept coming and growing, expanding to corporations and conferences.

Once a struggling student, Glenn now often motivates teachers on the value of their work.

“We have to keep these teachers inspired,” he said.

“They’re shaping these kids’ minds. And now more than ever, these kids are struggling with anxiety and doubt.”

A MATCH MADE IN ENGLISH CLASS Ben Glenn met his wife, Polina Osherov, when they were students at St. Xavier University in Chicago. Glenn was attending on a basketball scholarship.

“When I did go to college, my English was so bad that I had to take English 99,” Glenn said. “I was the only person in this class from this country.”

Glenn and Osherov, who was born in Russia, met in English 101 in his second semester in college when they exchanged editing papers.

“I had to write one paragraph, and, this is not an exaggeration, she gave me five pages of typed corrections,” Glenn said. “She looked at me and said, ‘I can’t believe you are in college. This is the worst piece of writing I’ve ever seen.’ I looked at her and thought, ‘I’m going to stick around her.’”

Glenn gave up his basketball scholarship after two years to transfer to Anderson University. He planned to play basketball there but decided to leave after one semester.

Osherov, a commercial photographer, helps manage her husband’s speaking engagements. She is co-founder and executive director of PATTERN, a nonprofit that focuses on workforce development for the creative class.

Glenn and Osherov have two children, Natasha, 14, and Anastasia, 12.

LETTER Clerk-treasurer can’t be trusted

Stay busy?

Commentary by Terry Anker Busy, busy, busy are we. We scurry about like some echo of our prehistoric progenitors, knowing that only the most tenacious and hard-working will survive the harsh realities of a violent world. The early bird gets the worm, we are reminded. Good. Even in a time of such global abundance (the World Bank and others of that ilk report poverty rates at a fraction of those 100 years ago in spite of a stunning increase in population), we — well, most of us — are loath to sit around.

Where conversations may have once centered on the speed we might see to retirement, now many are imagining a working lifestyle well into their 70s and beyond. “I’d like to work less” say some. Or, “I’d like more control over what I have to do.” But for many, the clarion call has become, “How many times a week can I really enjoy playing golf?” The point may be a good one.

And aside from those of us who’ve suffered setback or circumstance, an extended existence of commerce or professional volunteerism may be on the docket.

Growing life expectancies predict we are going to live longer, and more full and heathy lives, than any group of humans to previously populate this rock, Earth. But with this new longevity comes a handful of contemplations. Is our hanging on keeping someone else from the job?

For us now, at least, unemployment rates in Indiana suggest there is plenty of room in the workforce for seniors. How do we hope to live?

There are more options for active adults now than ever – with many providing if one spouse is ambulatory and the other not-so-much.

What do we want? If we can stay busy, should we? Must we? Many of us seem to think so.

Have toddler, will travel Commentary by Danielle Wilson It’s been a long time since I’ve traveled with little ones. But I was reminded of what a true nightmare hauling toddlers HUMOR cross-country can be when my youngest sister visited our snow-birding parents in Tampa, Fla., and I thought those of you still in the trenches could probably use a good giggle. Enjoy!

The day started badly, with our hero waking up late and arriving at the airport with less than an hour to spare. Not a huge deal if you’re by yourself, but a potential gameender with a rugrat in tow. To make matters worse, she’d mistakenly booked a single ticket, assuming her 2-year old would ride in her lap. The Southwest agent immediately informed her that because her son was older than 2, she would have to purchase an additional seat for $400 each way. Luckily, my sister works in marketing and was able to charm her way into a reasonably priced companion ticket. With precious minutes lost,

they made their way to security.

My nephew has a medical condition, though, that requires a whole slew of equipment. Thus, a short visit with TSA agents was impossible. The next thing my sister heard was her name being paged over the speakers as her gate was closing. Imagine a strung-out mother sprinting through the terminal, dragging several heavy suitcases with one hand and pushing a janky-wheeled stroller with the other.

No sweat for this supermom, and with the help of compassionate attendants who worked some festival-seating magic on a sold-out flight, she and my nephew actually enjoyed an uneventful trip to Florida.

Editor, I have read the articles on Clerk-Treasurer Christine Pauley and I believe she should resign from her position. I no longer believe her to be a trusted and honest employee.

Pauley said she “accidentally” found a thank-you note a city council candidate sent to Mayor Jim Brainard in a trash can at City Hall.

Pauley said she found the note Feb. 7 in a trash can near a parking area reserved for Brainard at City Hall. She said she had thrown away several coupons and went back to retrieve one when she saw the note.

Who is Pauley to decide to share it because its message did not line up with how she perceives (Adam) Aasen is presenting himself as a candidate?

“To me it only confirmed that a candidate’s claim that he’s independent is truly not independent,” Pauley said. “He could’ve written a very generic thank you.”

I believe Pauley should resign from her position because she cannot be trusted as treasurer.

How do we know it was coupons and not village correspondence that she was looking for?

I believe she is not to be trusted with any financial dealings for the village.

Back pain is the second-biggest reason that people do not go to work in the morning. The first reason is not havHUMOR ing a job.

Recently, I’ve been going to a chiropractor who uses the traditional approach practiced by the Mafia for generations: They rough me up, inflict pain and then take my money. It was time for a different approach.

Irwin, my new physical therapist, instructed me to stand as I normally do when I talk to someone. He prefers to observe his subjects in their natural setting. This sounded like Jane Goodall justifying her first expense report. Suddenly, I became extremely self-conscious. My body has a number of extremities that pretty much fall into place when I’m chatting with someone. I don’t think about where to put my right leg or how to position each arm during a discussion. I just start yacking away, although I do try not to put my foot in my mouth.

When I got into my normal posture, Irwin shook his head.

“You lean too far to the left,” he said, which is exactly what WIBC said to me in

l995 when they fired me from my talk show.

Then, Irwin put me on the massage table and rotated my head and neck to assess my range of motion.

“I don’t think your spine has a good relationship with your legs,” he commented. If there had been any conversation between the two, I would have overheard it.

To improve my posture, he suggested I walk with my arms at my sides, with the palms of both hands facing to the front, opened wide and turned skyward. I tried this while I was strolling downtown later that day. It felt odd, but I scored some loose change from sympathetic pedestrians.

Irwin told me to imagine there was a string running through my spine that went through my head to the ceiling, and then when I walked, to also concentrate on putting pressure on my big toes. My next appointment is with a neurologist. Not for my spine, but because I walked head-first into a wall.

CHS hosts Culture of Care Week

By Jasmine Hsu • news@currentincarmel.com Carmel High School recently held its second Culture of Care week, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness for mental health issues MENTAL HEALTH among students.

“We saw an increase in student counseling visits and communication concerning mental health, specifically anxiety and depression,” said Rachel Cole, CHS director of counseling. “The increase in those that suffer from anxiety and depression is a nationwide issue, and we wanted to connect our students, staff and families with resources and supports that are available to our CCS community.”

School counselors created a week-long program to improve students’ outlook and thinking about everyday life. Each day had a dress-up theme and a short exercise related to mindful thinking before the start of class.

For example, on one day, students were encouraged to wear blue and gold to show school pride. In classes, students were asked to talk to someone around them about topics ranging from gratitude to compassion. During lunch, CHS partnered with Love on the Leash, a pet therapy organization, to bring dogs for students to pet.

“It’s really good for your heart rate to interact with dogs,” said Karen Naber, a Love on the Leash volunteer. “Seeing the smiles on the kid’s faces when they see the dogs melts my heart, and it’s truly amazing to see the effects they have on a person.”

The activities put on by the CHS Counseling Center were designed to draw students into thoughtful and caring conversations.

“We want students, parents and teachers to feel safe, know what resources are available to them, how to reach out for help to others and know we care about them,” Cole said. “We want our community of learners to understand coping strategies for stress, relate to others and make healthy choices with a focus on resilience.”

Conner Prairie summer camps offer diverse experiences

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com Starting in May and lasting all summer, Conner Prairie is bringing back its slew of summer camps for those with varied interests. Here’s a guide: ADVENTURE CAMP The first of the season, Adventure Camp, is more traditional and is the history museum and park’s flagship camp.

Offered in week-long sessions across a 10-week span, the camp focuses on the outdoors and teaches participants skills in canoeing, hiking, archery, fishing, crafting and more. Adventure Camp also is organized by age groups: 5 (Farm Friends), 6-7 (Prairie Pals), 8-9 (Trail Blazers), 10-11 (River Runners) and 12-15 (Leaders in Training).

As part of its 2019 summer arts camp program, SullivanMunce Cultural Center will explore cultures and art from around the world.

France, Greece, Morocco, Spain and Japan will be studied by campers ages 7 to 11 across five weeks at the center at 225 W. Hawthorne St. in Zionsville.

Here’s the schedule: June 3 ¯ 7: France This camp will focus on famous impressionists — Monet, Degas, Renoir, Cezanne and Cassatt. Students will use various mediums, such as graphite, pastels, watercolors and acrylics to create figure drawings, en plein air landscapes and paintings in pointillism, along with building and designing Eiffel Towers. French food will be introduced and sampled.

June 10 ¯ 14: Greece Most modern-day art and architecture can trace its earliest beginnings to the culture of this ancient civilization. Students will study the gods and goddesses of Greek mythology, make a repoussé mask with foil, design a pottery vase, make Greek coins and medallions and more. Greek food will be introduced and sampled.

June 24 ¯ 28: Morocco Students will focus Moroccan art and architecture through making their own clay

tiles, pottery and mosaics. They also will discover weaving and how to draw and design a mandala in addition to making their own patterned Moroccan lantern. Moroccan food will be introduced and sampled.

July 15 ¯ 19: Spain Students will discover Spain through famous artists such as Picasso, Dali and Miro while exploring their techniques in cubism, surrealism and whimsy. They also will explore the architecture of Gaudi and make their own clay tiles and pottery painted with Spanish patterns. Spanish food will be introduced and sampled.

July 29 ¯ Aug. 2: Japan Students will travel to the land of the Rising Sun to study the ancient and presentday art and artistry of Japan while creating Japanese screens, fish kites, prints and ink paintings. Students also will learn some of the intricacies of the Japanese tea ceremony while creating tea bowls in clay, while also studying famous Japanese artists from the past, like Hokusai, as well as presentday artists like Yayoi Kusama.

Each of the five camps are $300 for members and $325 for non-members and run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Snacks are provided, but each camper should bring his or her own sack lunch.

Summer Spectacular Show Choir Camp — Carmel High School Choirs will host its fourth annual Summer Spectacular Show Choir Camp from June 3 to 6. The camp is for students who will be entering fifth through ninth grade in the fall. There will be three groups divided by age. The fifth- and sixth-graders will rehearse in the morning from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday. There will be two afternoon groups rehearsing from 1 to 4 p.m. One will be made up of seventh- and eighth-graders, and the other will be incoming high school freshmen. Camp Invention focuses on STEM

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com For years, the National Inventors Hall of Fame has put a focus on getting kids involved in science, technology, engineering and math with Camp Invention.

Camp Invention sessions pop up each summer across the nation, and this year, there are six scheduled in the Hamilton County, Geist and Zionsville communities.

This year, Camp Invention is unveiling Camp Invention: Supercharged, which takes the high-energy STEM camp to the next level, letting participants rebuild ships, design underwater equipment, explore circuit boards, motors and gears to design remotecontrolled robots and more.

Held at the historic Theater at the Fort on Fort Harrison, campers can take part in visual and performing arts during the four weeks of camps.

Parents of kids ages 6 to 14 can register their child for just one week of camp, or all four, as each camp will explore different topics. Camp days run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Monday through Friday during the weeks of June 10-14 (amusement week), 17-21 (exploration week), 24-28 (imagination week) and July 8-12 (movement week). Each week is themed for performing arts. Visual arts projects will support the theme and will include hands-on activities in painting, sculpture, pottery and more.

Four weeks of arts camps at Arts for Lawrence’s Theater at the Fort will give kids the opportunity to explore four topics – amusement, exploration, imagination and movement.

Starting after Memorial Day weekend, a local business will offer endless opportunities to kids interested in sports.

Off the Wall Sports’ summer camp program begins May 31 and lasts through mid-August and offers more than 100 different games and activities on a rotating schedule, including traditional sports, bounce houses, a giant waterslide and gaga ball.

Gaga ball is one of the camp’s most popular activities. The game is similar to dodgeball and is Off the Wall Sports campers play gaga played in an enclosed pit.

From learning the basics in the Rock 101 camp to focusing on classic rock or ’90s grunge and pop punk, School of Rock at 626 S. Range Line Rd., Carmel, has something for everyone ages 8 to 18, and even a rookie camp for kids age 5 to 7.

Teachers at School of Rock are experienced musicians who work to help students attain musical proficiency with a strong focus on rock music and instruments, from singing to drums to guitar.

Here’s the summer schedule of camps: Rock 101 Camp What: The Rock 101 Camp is for beginners who are 8 to 12 years old. No experience is necessary, as students will explore their instruments through musical games and activities. Students will work on songs Monday through Friday, and the camp will culminate in a concert at the end of the week for family and friends.

When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 10-14 and July 15-19 Cost: $500 , Best of the 90s Camp What: The ’90s were one of music’s most important decade as grunge and alternative music took over the airwaves and popular culture. Students will spend Monday through Friday learning and practicing songs from this era, all culminating in a live performance.

This camp is aimed for students 9 to 18 years old who have had some previous instruction.

Songwriting Camp What: Through this camp, students will learn how to write their own songs by analyzing some of the greatest compositions of the past 60 years in order to develop their own tunes. This camp is great for students 9 to 18 years old who have had previous instruction.

Bach to Rock, 2480 E. 146th St., Carmel, this year is offering camps focusing on music production in a studio, the business and technicalities of DJing, and even a camp simulating a band’s world tour.

Camps include: Rock Band For students of all levels, this program is taught by real musicians. Students will be placed in a band according to their age and skill level and will learn the requirements of ensemble playing, teamwork and more.

Depending on the age level, development of original material and music will be encouraged. Each session will end with a performance and recording of an album.

Glee Club Inspired by the TV show “Glee,” this choral ensemble will offer campers an atmosphere to unlock their inner performer. Each student will explore fun vocal exercises and singing in harmony in addition to choreography. This camp will focus on teaching reading music, intonation, listening skills, rhythm and more. Each week-long camp will end with a performance and recording of an album.

Rock City World Tour Through dynamic and musical and movement-base activities, students of this camp will be exposed to live instruments and a musically inspired storytime. Budding musicians will gradually develop the skills needed to read music, play simple rhythms and develop fine motor control. Classes will focus on foundational musical concepts, such as tempo, pitch, volume, singing and playing scales.

forming covers and writing songs to learn how to promote their music and get gigs. At this camp, students will learn how to create a press kit, including one-sheets, photos and a professional demo. Campers will work in a state-of-the-art studio with professional engineers.

Beat Refinery DJ Camp Students of this camp will get hands-on experience while learning the fundamentals of mixing songs, scratching sounds and DJ music theory by learning from professional DJs. Campers also will work on individual DJ work stations and will perform a two- to three-song mini mix at the end of the session. No previous DJ experience is required.

Recording Arts: ProTools and Production Using professional recording technology like ProTools, campers will gain hands-on experience manipulating sound in an industry-level environment. Campers will create original music and record live bands in the Bach to Rock recording studios.

Noble Kids Camp series returns to Forest, Dillon parks editorial@youarecurrent.com The Noblesville Parks and Recreation staff is looking to build on the success of the annual Noble Kids Camp and will continue to offer all-day summer camps and preschool camps in June and July.

“Camp is one of the best ways to spend your summer, making new friends, seeing old ones, playing games and creating memories,” said Amber Mink, Noblesville recreation program coordinator. “We are excited to have another great lineup of themes planned for this summer.”

Similar to previous years, the two camp sites – Dr. James A. Dillon Park, 6001 Edenshall Ln., and Forest Park, 701 Cicero Rd. – will offer the same themes and similar programming for kids ages 6 to 12.

All-day camps run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pricing is $125 per week for Noblesville residents and $155 for non-residents, and before- and after-care is available.

“The themes and options of Noble Kids Camp provide an abundant mixture of enjoyment, physical activity, education and social interaction in the safe environments of our parks and under the watchful eye of our highly trained counselors,” Noblesville Parks Director Brandon Bennett said.

The 2019 Noble Kids Camp schedule is as follows: • Ultimate Sports, June 3-7: Campers will step up their game with Ultimate Sports, including dodgeball, volleyball, gaga ball, capture the flag and more.

• Mad Scientists, June 10-1: This week will be full of fun science experiments and activities that will leave your campers creating their own questions to investigate.

• Spy Kids, June 17-21: Campers can go on a spy adventure by creating their own spy kit, going on scavenger hunts and solving mysteries.

• Wacky Water Week, June 24-28: At this camp, kids can beat the summer heat with water fun, including water games, relays, water balloons, team competitions and more.

• Messy Mania, July 8-12: Campers will make a different messy mixture each day, getting gooey and messy exploring a variety of different textures of slime, dough and more.

Outdoor adventure is key at the Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville’s Camp Crosser.

For the past several years, BGCN has offered the camp that lets local kids experience activities like zip lining, archery and swimming.

The camp offers sessions in the spring, summer and fall. There are two sessions set for this year so far – March 25 to 29 and April 1 to 5 – and registration is open now.

Camps last one week, with an overnight camp each Thursday, and are held at the club’s 20-acre camp along White River.

BGCN Director of Development Nathan Helm said registration is first come, first served, and slots fill quickly. Sixty campers will be accepted for each summer session.

“The purpose of Camp Crosser is to provide local youth with an opportunity to step outside into nature and experience the adventures it has to offer,” Helm said. “Camp Crosser provides children with the joy of discovering new friends, the pride of accomplishment and the wonder that nature offers. Youth will participate in age-appropriate activities, including zip-lining across the White River, canoeing, swimming, river stomping, challenge course, archery, arts and crafts, nature and environmental edu-

cation, hiking, campfire cooking and so much more.”

Camp Crosser is for youth ages 6 to 12.

Camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and provides a snack, but campers can be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. and stay until 6 p.m.

Campers must be a BGCN member, and the price to participate in the camps is $115.

To become a member, it’s $45 and includes after-school care throughout the year. Prior to registration, non-members can fill out a membership form online or in person at the BGCN office at 1700 Conner St., Noblesville.

Across six weeks, campers ages 8 to 17 can learn the ropes of sailing on Geist Reservoir.

Children are grouped according to age and experience, and each sailor is placed in single- and double-handed boats for lots of on-the-water learning experience. The goal of the course is to develop an appreciation for sailing and is designed to teach basic sailing techniques and water safety for the beginners and lead into racing and higher level techniques for the more advanced.

Classes begin with land-based discussions and demonstrations followed by on-thewater instruction, where skills – like upwind sailing, downwind sailing, reaching and docking – are covered. Additional activities like swimming, weather awareness, knot tying and on/off water-related games are conducted throughout the day. As the classes progress, instructors may begin introduction to racing if campers show interest.

Those interested can sign up for multiple camps, which are one-week long, running June 5-7, 10-14, 17-21, 24-28, July 8-12 and 1519. Each day the camp will last seven hours, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Book offers job search tips

By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com Searching for a job can be overwhelming. A new book, “Survive and Thrive in Your Job Search: The Team EMPLOYMENT Networking Group Process to Your Next Job,” offers strategies to help those looking for a new job.

The book was co-written by Carmel resident Dale Hinshaw and Fishers residents Tom Faulconer and Mike Johnson.

The three work together in a collective called Team Networking Group.

“We have a group process where we work with professionals trying to find jobs,” Hinshaw said. “The book is based on our work together the last three years.”

Hinshaw mentioned to Faulconer that he wanted to write a book, so Faulconer offered his expertise. He had previously written a true crime book in 2001.

The book takes the reader step-by-step through the job-search process.

“We lay the process out very clearly to show the steps in sequence people should follow in order to find a job,” Hinshaw said.

Small business owners deserve more respect

Commentary by Fred Glynn

Small businesses are the engines that drive Carmel. As a Hamilton County Councilor, I hear many stories of OPINION everyday residents who wake up at the crack of dawn to pursue their own version of the American Dream. Turning on the lights, the computers and finding the energy each day to go out on a limb to pursue your dream takes true grit and courage.

Since the rails of the Monon Railroad were laid here in 1882, small business has repeatedly lifted our city into each new promising generation. Today, those same businesses remain our key to an opportunity-filled tomorrow. They build without developer handouts, pay taxes without government subsidies and operate without the safety net of bailouts.

But countless small business owners feel that they are being left behind by the current mayor, who pursues forced growth and excessive intervention, which in turn produce endless construction, artificially inflated rents and special interest payouts.

We can do better.

Take Carmel’s recent purchase of the Monon Plaza. Appraised for $11 million, the city paid $15 million for it and will then give it away for free to a private developer that will develop to the mayor’s wishes. It will increase rents from $15 to $18 per square foot to $28. Many businesses will have to close or move. The mayor responded, “Well, the businesses that want to stay could always take less square footage.” We must do better.

As your next mayor, I will put Carmel’s small businesses back in the spotlight. I will give them an even playing field by stopping the practices of special deals and citycontrolled developments. I promise to wake up every morning, just like those small business owners, and fight to ensure your tax dollars are used properly and that Carmel’s small businesses lead us into our city’s next great chapter.

‘Cat in the Hat’ becomes annual affair for Civic cast, director

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Matthew Altman relishes his annual appearance in “The Cat in the Hat.” “I enjoy being with a hilarious PLAY group of actors who can put forth focus and fun into this production,” Altman said.

This will be the sixth consecutive year Altman has appeared in Civic Theatre’s production of “The Cat in the Hat” at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The fantasy tale follows a talking cat’s visit to the house of two bored children on a rainy afternoon. The production runs from Feb. 26 to March 7.

“It gives new life and energy every time we do it,” Altman said. “Our director, Anne Beck, has trust in us to give our best and craziest performance, all while honoring Dr. Seuss.”

Altman, a Carmel resident, performs as Kitten and Thing 2.

“Playing to a children’s audience, they give more audible reactions, which give us terrific feedback,” Altman said. “(It) also helps maximize our energy on stage.”

Altman has previously performed in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “Hairspray.”

“I’m very glad to be representing people of color on stage, along with my co-star Jonathan Studdard (Indianapolis resident who plays The Cat),” Altman said. “It’s very important to have children of color see people who look like them represented on a stage. I’m very grateful to Civic for the opportunities and freedom they allow all of us to have to perform.”

Beck, a Fishers resident, said the cast varies year to year.

“Last year, we had five new to the show,” Beck said. “This year, we only have one new actor to the show. We are thrilled this year to add well-known professional local actor John Vessels to our production.”

Vessels, who plays the Fish, recently performed in “Ruthless! the Musical” for Actors Theatre of Indiana. Beck’s daughter, Nya, also appeared in “Ruthless!”

“The show is fast-paced and super engaging and fun,” Beck said. “The actors, together with myself, can’t help but keep fun alive as we tell the story. It is always fun to create a little mischief, and each new cast member brings a new and differ-

ent energy to the group, so they learn to play in fresh ways.”

Beck said she looks forward to the show each week.

“Knowing how kids react and their audible giggles still tickles me six years later anticipating how this show affects them.

They love it,” she said.

BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR DR. SEUSS Civic Theatre will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 2. Admission to the party comes with the purchase of a ticket to that day’s performances, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Businesses and service providers will be on hand with birthday cake, family activities, games, treats and prizes. Some of the groups participating are Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, Best Buddies and The Ice at Center Green.

The 2 p.m. performance will be inclusive, with accommodations for sensory sensitivities, mobility issues and other special needs. The adaptations include keeping the house lights up, adjusting overwhelming sound effects, adjusting house rules to allow for talking and moving, additional seating options for those with a mobility device, and an American Sign Language interpreter upon request.

The first show at The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, is “Cory Lingner: Just a Dancer,” set for March 29 to 31.

“Bill Book: It’s a Most Unusual Day” is set for May 31 to June 2.

The third show will be “Singing Streisand: An Evening with Brynn Kathryn Tyszka,” which is set for Oct. 11 to 13.

The Magic Thread Cabaret will present “Les Chanteuses” at IndyFringe Festival in downtown Indianapolis in August.

Bowers St., Whitestown What to get: Smoked Pork Green Chili Nachos Price: $14 Anna’s take: This was my first time visiting Moontown Brewing Company, and it lived up to my expectations. The brewery is super cool and the ambience is warm and inviting, unlike some breweries that seem stark and overly modern. I sampled several dishes, starting with the pickle platter ($7). It included a spicy pickled egg, pickled cauliflower and carrots and a pickled avocado, which I had never tried before. I love anything pickled. I then sampled the tossed Caesar salad ($10 for the half-size) with a dressing made in-house. Next, I

tried the Smoked Pork Green Chili Nachos, featuring cotija, sharp cheddar cheese, pickled onions, jalapenos, cilantro and sour cream atop vibrant blue tortilla chips. Next, I ordered the brisket sandwich ($14). This is something I think everyone should order at least once in their life. The brisket was melt-in-your-mouth tender and stacked high on a bun slathered with horseradish aioli and topped with shaved white onion. Get it with a side of mac and cheese.

Suggesting pairings: I sampled several of Moontown’s brews, but my favorite was probably the Hippie Royalty IPA, a bold pale ale with what Moontown describes as “an aggressive citrus and resinous hop character, balanced by a slightly sweet caramel malt character.”

Behind bars: Renaissance Get it at Anthony’s Chophouse, Carmel Ingredients: 2 oz. Tito’s vodka, .75 oz. limoncello, .5 oz. Blanco vermouth, 1 oz. prosecco, lemon swath Directions: Combine vodka, limoncello and vermouth in a shake tin.

Add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a martini glass, top with prosecco and garnish with a lemon swath.

Zachariah at the Aleppo Mosque Commentary by Don Knebel Aleppo, Syria was once among the Middle East’s most pleasant cities, famous for its wide streets and vibrant night life. Its unusual religious diversity TRAVEL was symbolized by an ancient mosque claiming to hold bodily remains important to both Christians and Muslims. Unfortunately, the city and its mosque became casualties of Syria’s civil war.

Aleppo, the world’s longest continuously inhabited city, was founded in the sixth millennium B.C. Located along caravan routes between the Mediterranean Sea and Asia, it became one of the largest cities in the region. After Islamic forces took control in 637 A.D., Aleppo became an important center of learning and culture. In the eighth century, Aleppo’s rulers built a large mosque on the grounds of a cemetery confiscated from the Cathedral of Saint Helena, named for the mother of Roman Emperor Constantine.

A cornerstone from that cathedral still lies near the mosque. In 1090, craftsmen erected a 150-foot-tall stone minaret at a corner of

the mosque. What became known as the Great Mosque of Aleppo was extensively rebuilt in the 12th and 13th centuries following damage from fires and wars. A shrine was added to contain the remains of Zachariah, honored by both Christians and Muslims as the father of John the Baptist. A wall marker near the shrine explained in English that in 1120, workers found a “marble box, closed and sealed with lead, on the box the following is inscribed: ‘This is one of the organs of Zakariyya the Prophet.’”

On April 24, 2013, the minaret, the oldest surviving structure of the mosque, was toppled during artillery battles between Syrian government forces and rebels occupying the mosque. The shrine containing Zachariah’s organ was not touched. With the Great Mosque of Aleppo in government hands, a multi-million dollar effort to restore the mosque to its pre-war condition has begun.

I need a milk butler. Every morning I eat cereal, then I drink tea. Both activities require adept milkGRAMMAR GUY pouring skills. Inevitably, I mis-pour the milk and have a cascade of milk down the side of the milk container. And, when it comes to tea, a milk-pouring catastrophe is the quickest way to end up with way too much milk in your tea. So, yes, I need a milk butler.

In the same way that I struggle with pouring milk, many people struggle with knowing the right time to use “that” and “which.” I’m just going to hit you with the punchline on this one: If your sentence doesn’t need the clause your word (that or which) is joining, use which. If your sentence does need the clause your word (that or which) is connecting, use that.

Here are two nearly identical examples: My milk butler’s DeLorean, which is painted space gray, gets up to 88 mph quite quickly.

My milk butler’s DeLorean that is painted space gray gets up to 88 mph quite quickly.

This is a tale of two sentences. In the first sentence, I implied that the milk butler (whose name is Percy) only has one DeLorean, and it just happens to be painted space gray. The detail about the paint color isn’t necessary, so I chose to use “which.”

Removing the phrase “which is painted space gray” doesn’t change the meaning of the sentence, but simply adds a nice detail to the already intriguing sentence.

In the second sentence, however, you get the impression that Percy owns multiple DeLoreans. The phrase “that is painted space gray” is an example of a restrictive clause; another part of the sentence, ‘My milk butler’s DeLorean,’ depends on it. If you remove “that is painted space gray,” the meaning of the sentence changes completely.

Do I need a milk butler? Probably so, but my finances don’t yet allow for it.

Until then, I’ll just have to make sure I’m using “that” and “which” correctly.
