They ran twenty or thirty yards away and they stopped and they just looked

City signs bike-sharing deal 1h <PaZ 0\Qa^VX Â&#x201C; \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ Bike-sharing program will be coming to Carmel very soon.

On Feb. 13, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard signed a contract with Zagster, which TRANSPORT runs bike-sharing programs for the real estate industry and at universities around the nation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Zagster is a low-cost entryway for the city and local businesses rather than having a major sponsor (Indiana Pacers) like Indianapolis,â&#x20AC;? said Bruce Kimball Kimball, who is on the alternative transportation committee for Carmel.

The Carmel plan calls for the bikes to be ready for rental by mid-March and the system can be operated using cell phone technology. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Carmel is proud to be recognized as a bicyclefriendly community and with our 90-plus roundabouts and 125 miles of multi-use paths, we have always placed a high value on transportation alternatives for both residents and visitors,â&#x20AC;?

Brainard stated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Zagster was one of the first companies to establish a bike-sharing program in the U.S. and the company has been successful in developing individually-tailored systems for mixed-use developments and universities such as Duke and Yale. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a nice connection that Carmel-based Allegion is a provider of the automated locks used by Zagster.â&#x20AC;?

According to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s release, Carmel will pay Zagster $1,320 per year per bike, along with a one-time set-up fee of $8,600, which includes two bike docks with automated locking systems, 16 adult bikes, the maintenance and the reposi-

tioning of the bikes and customer services. The docks will be located near the Monon Greenway in the Carmel Arts & Design District and at City Center.

After establishing an account with Zagster, users are able to rent bikes from one rack and return it to any of the other racks. The bikes will cost $3 an hour to rent with a cap of $24 for up to a 24-hour period. There are different rental charges for those who pay monthly or annual fees. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The city is getting the first two stations going,â&#x20AC;? Kimball said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard places like Clay Terrace have been wanting bikeshare for quite awhile. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting a new path connected to the Monon as part of the U.S. 31 construction.

What happened: An amended ordinance was introduced to define rules for tuition reimbursement.

What it means: After some debate about including tuition reimbursement in the proposed firefighters union contract, new guidelines might be established. Under the new changes, a city employee canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enroll in more than two classes at a time and the courses must relate to an employeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career path with the city. Course reimbursements are subject to approval and the amount of reimbursement could be tied to the grades received in the course, meaning more money for better grades.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next: The bill was sent to the Finance, Rules and Administration Committee which met on Feb. 19.

What happened: City Council President Rick Sharp sponsored changing some rules regarding installing â&#x20AC;&#x153;speed humpsâ&#x20AC;? in neighborhoods.

Springmill Pet Wellness Clinic opened Jan. 22 at 224 W. 161st St., a second location for the group following its first office at 71st Street and Binford Blvd. in Indianapolis. Samantha Steffen had always been a faithful watcher of â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Bachelor.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was on my family vacation, TV my momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best friend said have you ever thought about trying out for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Bachelor,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? Steffen said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My dad said you should do it if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chris (Soules). I blew it off. I got home to LA a week later and couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get it off my mind.

So I looked up auditions and saw it was in Costa Mesa, an hour away from me, the next day. I thought it was meant to be. I went, didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect anything and it spiraled from there.â&#x20AC;?

The 2005 Carmel High School graduate, nicknamed Sammi, was selected as one of 30 contestants for the 19th season of the ABC reality dating show. Steffen didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t end up being picked

by Soules and was eliminated in episode six on Feb. 9. But she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t regret the experience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I went there with intentions of what seems like a great guy and he really was,â&#x20AC;? said Steffen, who turned 28 on Feb. 15. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got so many good friends out of it and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the best thing that came out of it for me. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really fun for me to continue to watch it and root for my friends. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made some of my best friends in the entire world. I never expected that.â&#x20AC;?

Steffen said some friends were surprised she got a rose when she hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been seen on the show much. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see the long conversations that we did get to have together,â&#x20AC;? Steffen said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think we did have a connection even though we never had the one-on-one date. I was one of the girls left that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a full date with him so it was hard to get to know him on a deeper level.

Really the only chance I got to talk with him was during rose ceremonies and on group dates.â&#x20AC;?

Since her six or seven weeks of filming â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Bachelorâ&#x20AC;? in the fall, she has concentrated on marketing it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (marketing) pretty much what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been doing 24/7, focusing on work and my clothing line,â&#x20AC;? said Steffen, founder of IDGAF clothing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been keeping me busy but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been really great.â&#x20AC;?

Steffenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother Mala said she and her husband Joseph, who now live in Noblesville, knew their daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fate, but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what would be aired. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a lot of fun watching,â&#x20AC;? Mala said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re proud of Sammi. It was a great learning experience she gained. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve watched the show since the first season, never guessing in a million years our daughter would be on it.â&#x20AC;?

Steffen said she received a lot of support from friends from Carmel and Indiana University she hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t heard from in years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was very, very sweet,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Steffen said she has been on a few dates with some really nice men in recent weeks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not seriously dating anybody but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking to,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Parents of tots take education into their own hands

Shallon wanted the same thing for her child London and couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find any options. She didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t put London in a preschool until she was four because she couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find anything she really loved in Carmel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can find one (secular) or the other (play-based), but to find there wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t an option,â&#x20AC;? Shallon said.

Now there is. The Carmel Cooperative Preschool, a nonprofit school, for ages 2 and up will open in the fall at 3085 W. 116th St. The group is renting classroom space from the Congregation Shaarey Teflilla. Families of all faiths are welcome. Since the school is on the westside of Carmel, the school could also be attractive to Zionsville families as well.

Mary Rose Simons, who is the co-president of a Meridian Hills Cooperative and a Carmel resident, is the Carmel Cooperative director. Shallonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daughter London, 5, is in the Meridian Hills Cooperative Nursery School but will go to kindergarten in the fall.

Her son Mars, who turns 2 in August, has enrolled in the Carmel Cooperative Preschool for the fall.

Simonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; son Ari, 3, attends Meridian Hills and will switch to the Carmel program, in the fall. Carmel Cooperative Preschool, a member of the Indiana Council of Preschool Cooperatives, will be the 11th Cooperative Preschool in the Indianapolis area. There are 340 students in the 10 preschools at this time. The cooperative hires a teacher, certified in professional development, and the parents serve as the assistant teachers. Each parent comes in two or three days a month as part of their commitment. The parents are given training in child development and conflict resolution, Simons said.

Simons, who taught at the middle school and high school levels before having children, said the parents form a board to make decisions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So all the big-picture decisions if we were going to expand or

Now we get to know the families and they live 50 blocks farther south.â&#x20AC;?

Shallon has enjoyed volunteering in the cooperative. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really liked the idea of being able to participate in the classroom,â&#x20AC;? Shallon said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My daughter has a hard time with transitions so having me there the first few times really made her feel comfortable. In co-op you get to know the parents and families so that has really helped her, too, to feel she is at home.â&#x20AC;?

Shallon recently volunteered on Feb. 13, taking part in the kids making valentines and sending them through a mini pretend post office.. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s neat to see how they interact with their peers,â&#x20AC;? Shallon said.

Nationally, co-ops are a growing trend when it comes to schooling children. This comes from those preparing to homeschool and those that will send their children to public school. The trend-finding group POPSUGAR recently did a study on co-ops, and as writer Patricia Anne-Tom states: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The foundation for co-op preschools was laid in 1916, by a group of faculty wives at the University of Chicago who were looking for a way to provide social education for their children and parent education for themselves. Nowadays, the model has evolved: parents assist the professional teachers in the classroom on a rotating basis, participate in the educational program for all the children, and share in the administration and maintenance of the school.â&#x20AC;?

She notes that co-ops are the right choice if, as a parent, you: Â&#x201C; Want more bonding time with your preschool-aged child. Â&#x201C; Have time to give, but not deep pockets. Â&#x201C; You want a more active approach to shaping your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s education.

For the 29th year, the Carmel Education Foundation will present the musical showcase featuring performances from more than 800 students from FUNDRAISER Carmel Elementary and middle schoolsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; choirs and ensemble groups.

Sponsored by the Carmel Education Foundation, it began as part of the Carmel Education Foundation Telethon. The CEF raises money to offer grants to the CCS teachers to develop new Danquist curriculum. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The telethon was broadcasted live on TV to the Carmel community. The National Honor Society students called the community and asked for their donations to support the Carmel Education Foundation's mission,â&#x20AC;? said Barbara Danquist, co-executive director of CEF. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When cable choice was given to Carmel, CEF changed its telethon format. The telethon continues every March with the NHS students calling the community for their donations. But the performance of the CCS choirs and ensembles was no longer able to be live. So it became the musical showcase.â&#x20AC;?

The showcase will be filmed and edited by the Carmel High School Television students and shown during the annual telethon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In turn CEF sells the DVD for $15. Donations are taken at the door for CEF's mission,â&#x20AC;? Danquist said.

The musical showcase is 5-9 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Carmel High School Auditorium. The Telethon is slated for March 17, 18 and 19 and shown on BrightHouse channel 99.

Howard Dean, the would-be comedian?

The 2016 presidential race is heating up, and we got a real charge out of the latest shenanigans, this one compliments of Howard Dean, the former failed Democratic presidential candidate and former Vermont governor. Sensing that Scott Walker, the Republican governor of Wisconsin, is gaining steam on his march toward the partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nomination, Dean took a shot at Walker for not having a college degree. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The issue is, How well educated is this guy?â&#x20AC;? Dean asked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I worry about people being president of the United States not knowing about the world and not knowing much about science.â&#x20AC;?

Well, then, this borders on hilarity. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re assuming Dean is just parroting the party line in trashing Walker. What would you expect from the party of elitists? We find it interesting that we never heard Dean worry, back in 2008, that his partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nominee, Barack Obama, was nothing more than a community organizer and very junior senator. Did Dean believe Obama had learned everything he needed to know about the world from the Rev. Jeremiah Wright? At least Obama has a degree from Harvard, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen how that has worked out. Speaking of Harvard, we wonder if Dean ever questioned Teddy Kennedyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Harvard degree. You just have to love Teddy. Back in 1951, he was forced to withdraw from Harvard for cheating on his Spanish final. He was allowed back in â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the check cleared â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and eventually earned his degree. Another round, Teddy? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Si, mis amigos.

Mucho gusto!â&#x20AC;? Unfortunately, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re starting to see what direction this election season is taking, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not going to be pretty. Walker is an accomplished governor, in our opinion, and if he stays the course â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in other words, he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t turn into the typical wimp Republican â&#x20AC;&#x201C; he could be a formidable challenger. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s concentrate on what all the candidates have actually accomplished. Sorry, Hillary.

As a kid, tornados never seemed that scary.

The wind would blow, sure; but other than picking up the limbs that would be strewn across the lawn the next day, there seemed to be little impact. I grew up safe in the knowledge that if something bad was going to happen, that someone, an adult, would let me know. I think most of us did. But on a rainy day in April of 1974, I was forced to put this supposition to the test.

Mom was making preparations for a ladies club party that she was hosting in our home that night. And, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d just finished my homework and was watching a little television before being banished to my bedroom when the grown-ups came over. The unremarkable evening, like many scores of others, spun around us with little note of it.

My Dad came home from the fields a bit early.

It had been raining off and on all day. Such is spring in the Hoosier state. But as his pickup

parked on the gravel in front of the house, he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come in immediately as was his custom.

Instead, I noticed him peering at the sky from the front porch. Distracted by the TV, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t immediately notice him come in the house â&#x20AC;&#x201C; although the door was inches away. He was applying all of his considerable strength to close the door. His shouts were barely audible over the din. In an instant I was scooped up and delivered to safety. The next time I was in that room, it was gone.

Yes, tornados are scary and do kill people. But the adults in my life were vigilant, and ready to sacrifice. We, even the dog, survived and built back the house. Today, it makes me wonder are we ready for the wind to blow?

Hi, and welcome to Department of Kids and Recreation official Mini-Van Tour. My name is Danielle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Excuse me, Danielle whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that odor . . . ?â&#x20AC;?

I tell you what, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hold all questions â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;til the end of the tour. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like the zoo . . . â&#x20AC;&#x153; Thank you. Now this mini-van was established in the year 1998 under the direction of Chrysler- Motors. It can easily hold a doublewide stroller, four Size 3 soccer balls, and seven gallons of milk. Purchased in 2001, it had no dents or scratches, no stains or holes in the fabric, and gave off a fresh pine sent.

All air vents were coin-free and the cassette player worked properly at that time.

Before we enter the van, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to point out a few interesting spots on the exterior, beginning with this sine wave-like mark along the entire left-side. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no custom detailing! This unique decoration came about after a rather close encounter with a mailbox two months into ownership. Now on the right, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll notice a more subtle scratch, though no less handsome. This beauty was the result of poor navigation by a seemingly sober woman who was helping the actual sober driver back out of a bar parking lot at 2 a.m. after a bachelorette party. I call these â&#x20AC;&#x153;accoutrements.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Danielle, whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that white scratch that looks like you hit a house?â&#x20AC;?

For the last time, please hold all questions until the end. As I manually slide open the two side-doors (you may want to put those gas masks on now) please note how this seat belt has become entangled with the locking mechanism. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a new feature, folks!

Under the back bench, take notice of the large pile of wrappers, discarded Kleenex, McDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Happy Meal toys, and yes, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s your lucky day, people, an honest-to-God sippy cup from 2006. Probably a nice sharp cheddar in there by now. Do I hear someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stomach growling? Ha-HA! In between the two front seats, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see the typical collection of water bottles, pacifiers and reject Yu-Gi-Oh cards. But if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll peer just to the right, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be in for a real treat. Anyone â&#x20AC;&#x153;hazardâ&#x20AC;? a guess? â&#x20AC;&#x153;A moldy waffle?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;A mutilated Barbie?â&#x20AC;?

Both reasonable answers, but no. That, my friends, is an actual corn dog from the 2003 State Fair. Ah, the memories. They grow up so fast, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t they? But I digress . . .

At this time, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to conclude our tour.

Yâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;all have been one of the greatest groups Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever worked with, really. Peace out!

It's time to get ready for Spring Break!

LAST CHANCE!

On the table for the past several months has been the decision to keep or remove the STOP sign on 126th and Auman Drive.

CITY Seems like an easy solutionâ&#x20AC;Ś pull the sign and allow rush hour traffic to move efficiently. This would benefit the greatest number of people.

However at rush hour, people who live in Auman/Newark cannot turn left to get out of their neighborhood on either 126th or Range Line.

WHAT SHOULD THE COUNCIL DO ?â&#x20AC;&#x201C; protect the egress and safety of the people in the neighborhood or ease the traffic congestion at rush hour?

Perhaps neither.

126th Street is a 40-year-old, narrow street that, because of decisions made to build the Palladium and city center, now has to handle traffic it was never designed to handle. Traffic counts are just on the cusp of a four-lane road requirement. In addition to what is there now, we just approved city center 2 with 575 ,000 square feet of new office/retail space coming on line; a new retirement community already approved next to the Methodist Church and Buckingham ( Mohawk Hills) is selling their vacant land to a home builder.

Will that affect 126th Street traffic ? Of course

it will!

So the real question is, whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wrong with that street and how do we fix it so that it can handle the increased future traffic and function as the gateway into city center? Â&#x201C; Install an on-demand stop light NOWâ&#x20AC;Ś. green at all times on 126th until triggered by someone needing to get out of Auman/ Newark. Â&#x201C; Engineering Department asked to submit a redesign of the entire road from Keystone Parkway to Range Line, understanding that this is the gateway to city center. Â&#x201C; Simultaneously continue negotiations with the various developers in play to effect a monetary buy-in. Â&#x201C; Place the rebuild costs into the city budget for 2016.

Since money may not be available for the immediate work, the council will offer money from the Rainy Day fund to get this started.

Not just a band aid but a real, long term solution.

Politics should not get in the way of governing.

Editor, Attending a professional sporting event is an unforgettable experience. For most people, it is the only time they enthusiastically high-five complete strangers. As you can imagine for fans, the proposed â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stadium for Indianaâ&#x20AC;? is certainly more than just building some walls, stands and a field for our Indy Eleven professional soccer team. It is about creating a transformational experience that ignites passion in all people of various ages in our community, city and state.

For the more than 60,000 members who make up the Indiana soccer family, and who play for one of the 140 member clubs or in one of the several Indiana adult leagues, attending an Indy Eleven game or a Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s or Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s National Team at the new stadium, will inspire dreams.

While the stadium will be a showcase home for Indy Eleven and other soccer events â&#x20AC;&#x201D; including a potential professional womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it will be a multipurpose stadium hosting entertainment and other sports at the professional, collegiate, high school and youth levels.

The proposed stadium would be more than just an investment in our youths and attraction for our adults â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it would boost Indianaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy.

For Indianapolis, the city is bolstering its position as the capital for sports in the U.S. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve come a long way since laying the foundation for the Hoosier Dome. Ersal Ozdemir, the owner of Indy Eleven, is building upon a vision with soccer fans in mind.

If soccer isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t your thing; if you never attend a match; youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never have to pay a dime toward the stadiumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s construction. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go, you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pay. The cost for building the stadium at $82 million will be paid for only by those who attend events at the stadium.

I encourage everyone to contact their legislator so lawmakers at the Statehouse realize this stadium is an investment in more than just the Indy Eleven team or soccer. Instead, this is an investment in ensuring a strong future by improving the quality of life for Hoosiers across Indiana.

This time he will emphasize the Tony Awardwinning showâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s serious side, though its comic aspects are never far from the surface. As the French playwright said about her work in 2000, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Artâ&#x20AC;? is a tragedy â&#x20AC;&#x153;because it is a break-up of a friendship, a rupture between peopleâ&#x20AC;Ś My plays have always been described as comedy, but I think theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re tragedy. They are funny tragedy, but they are tragedy. Maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a new genre.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a play about friendship, not art,â&#x20AC;? Klingenmeier explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And the way she details it, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effective storytelling.â&#x20AC;?

Both funny and sad, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Artâ&#x20AC;? is a fine candidate for â&#x20AC;&#x153;talkbacksâ&#x20AC;? after every performance, the director has found. He has arranged for those with the new production because they worked so well in 2008, he says. The conversations naturally settle on what makes someone your friend.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s less focus on what makes something art, because Reza is mainly concerned to explore the nature of friendship, using art as a vehicle.

Carmel Theatre Company is in its second season at the 70-seat Studio 15 in Carmelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Arts and Design District. In that location, the troupe succeeds Carmel Repertory Theatre, which has disbanded.

fornia. He is no stranger to professional theater, but when he wanted to focus on his family years ago, he took 13 years off from the stage. Normally, one directing assignment and one acting gig annually worked best for him when he held a job as a letter carrier in Noblesville.

His first stage appearance after moving to the Indianapolis area came with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shadowlandsâ&#x20AC;? at the Edyvean Repertory Theatre (now defunct) about 20 years ago. His local directing involvement began in 1997, directing â&#x20AC;&#x153;Butterflies Are

When he turned 65 a year ago, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I decided to stop striving,â&#x20AC;? he said. He wanted to step aside from having the same kind of intensity he was used to summoning as an actor, so discontinued working with an agent. Along the way, he prepared to stop directing as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m rounding off this part of my life,â&#x20AC;? he said in an interview. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Directing is a heavy load,â&#x20AC;? often increased in community theater by several other responsibilities a productionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s director needs to take on. Klingenmeier has designed and built sets, for example, and for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Artâ&#x20AC;? designed the poster and is handling publicity.

He is remaining active in performing arts by shifting his skills to directing, producing and writing videos for the Indiana University Dental School. The continuing series focuses on ethical dilemmas in dentistry, and his schedule includes seven more before the series is complete.

This has given Klingenmeier stimulating work he can sink his teeth into, so to speak. But the siren call of live theater may still attract him, he concedes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I will be acting more in the future if I read a play that grabs me,â&#x20AC;? he promised.

Mark your calendar on March 5. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the 12th annual Taste of Carmel, a food and drink extravaganza that benefits Orchard Park Elementary. The event is presented by Orchard Park Elementary and their PTO. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will have over 40 restaurants, breweries, wineries, and caterers there,â&#x20AC;? said Jennifer Penix, PTO President and event organizer.  Along with all those goodies, there will be a photo booth, the opportunity to win a raffle for a piece of diamond jewelry donated by Distinctive Diamonds, and a silent auction. Personnel from the school and surrounding schools will be invited, but it is an adults-only event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re expecting over 1000 people, and our goal is to raise $25,000 for the school,â&#x20AC;? Penix

said.  Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the best thing to hear about a charity event? This: â&#x20AC;&#x153;100 percent of the profits goes right back to the school,â&#x20AC;? Penix told me proudly. The title sponsor for this event is Whole Foods. Zucchini Tomato Pie Ingredients: 2 cups chopped zucchini. 1 cup chopped tomato. 1/2 cup chopped onion. 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese. 3/4 cup biscuit baking mix. 1/2 cup milk. 3 eggs. 1/2 teaspoon salt. 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper.

Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 10-inch pie pan. Combine zucchini, tomato, onion and Parmesan cheese in prepared pie pan. In a small bowl, combine biscuit mix, milk, eggs, and salt and pepper. Beat until smooth, then pour over vegetable mixture. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

Omega fatty acids are essential for our health and support everything from healthy joints to brain function and a happy NUTRITION mood. Both Omega 3â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Omega 6â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s are considered essential and must be obtained from our diets, as our bodies cannot produce them.

Besides supporting smooth skin and healthy joints, Omega 3â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s are especially important for heart health and fighting heart disease. They even have the benefit of cancer prevention, such as breast cancer, as they moderate inflammation and inflammation and cancer have been found to go hand in hand.

But did you know that with too many Omega 6 fatty acids we start canceling out the benefit of Omega 3â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s? A healthy ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 is around 4 to 1, but our western diets are often in the range of 20 or even 30 to 1. What are some of the reasons many of our diets are skewed?

One reason is the abundant use of corn in

feed for beef and poultry. Unfortunately, what the cow eats is what it passes on and corn has omega ratios as high as 50 to 1. Our diets often include fried and processed food that uses corn oil, safflower oil, non-trans fat margarines. All of these sources raise the ratio of Omega 6â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in our diet and should be limited.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth it to switch to grass fed meats, where the livestock gets a more natural food source.

Incorporate more cold water fish such as salmon, which has almost a perfect balance of essential fatty acids.

Make sure we have a daily source of essential fatty acids, which we can get in high amounts from cold water fish or a fish oil supplement. But make sure your diet is not canceling out all of the great benefits.

But now a wellknown restaurant will finally take DINING its place. Bru Burger Bar, a Mass Ave. establishment specializing in gourmet burgers, is planning a July opening for the former space.

Cunningham Restaurant Group tells Current in Carmel that they are demolishing the old building at 12901 Old Meridian St. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a unique looking structure thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s around 6,000 square feet â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and constructing something similar in size. There will be ample outdoor dining at the new building.

Jon Jessup, of Summit Realty, has told Current that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been looking for a suitable use for the former site for years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The old structure was just obsolete,â&#x20AC;? Jessup said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are going to keep the existing footprint.

The design has been approved by Carmel, so it should fit with the area.â&#x20AC;?

Cunningham Restaurant Group has expanded its presence in Indianapolis in recent years. Locally, the company owns and operates restaurants such as Mesh, Union 50 and Stone Creek Dining co., which has a nearby location in West Carmel. Bru Burger Bar also has a location in Lexington, Ky. but this will be the second location in Indiana and third overall.

Jessup said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know there are other good burger places around town but this place is going to have a big parking lot and a great atmosphere.â&#x20AC;?

Jessup said the location is ideal, considering new construction planned near Old Meridian, including an $80 million mixed-use development from Edward Rose called The District. Keystone Construction Group is also working on a nearby mixed-used development called Olivia on Main.

The nearby Meijer will also get a facelift soon and a womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health center from St.Vincent Hospitals is in the works.

With businesses such as Mangia and Holy Cow Cupcakes closing, many people are asking when any new eateries will DINING open in the Carmel City Center.

Located at its prominent corner, Matt the Millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tavern has thrived at the Pedcor property.

Matt the Millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s has seen such success at the city center that its owners want to open a second restaurant â&#x20AC;&#x201C; right next door. CBL Restaurants, based in Columbus, Ohio, is opening Langtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Irish Pub, a 4,500-square-foot bar and restaurant that is meant to compliment Matt the Millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rather than compete. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Really, what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to create is an entertainment district,â&#x20AC;? Craig Barnum, president of CLB Restaurants, said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So often with these restaurants they are one-stop shops. They are free-standing buildings and people have to really seek the places out.â&#x20AC;?

Barnum said he envisions that people might enjoy a drink at Langtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s before or after a meal at Matt the Millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. The two should be very different. Matt the Millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s serves casual-upscale food that works for a dinner before a show at the nearby Palladium. Langtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will be much more casual with prices in the $10 range and a bar-driven atmosphere. The menu will consist of Irish favorites such as Celtic stew, bangers and

mash and shepherdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pie, along with American pub fare. Langtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bar will also stay open to around 1 or 2 a.m., fulfilling a nightlife need for the area. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be opening the Langtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s if we thought it was anything like Matt the Millers restaurant,â&#x20AC;? he said.

While Matt the Millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s specializes in craft beers, Langtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will feature more Euro beers.

Langtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will have more TVs, even featuring a TV in each booth, and will be a destination for soccer or rugby lovers to catch a game. Barnum said they might even open early in the morning for some big matches on TV. The pub is expected to open May 1.

In the wake of the Brian Williams scandal, I should perhaps come clean right off the bat and say the Tolkien association comes from searching â&#x20AC;&#x153;I should likeâ&#x20AC;? and finding nothing but â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fellowship of the Ringâ&#x20AC;? quotes for pages. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll recognize Bilbo Bagginsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; famous farewell speech: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.â&#x20AC;?

Anyway, I digress.

Tolkien was an Oxford man through and through, so it seems only right I look to the Oxford English Dictionary for some clarification on

this one. Unfortunately, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of two minds.

Acknowledging confusion of the very sort youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re asking about, Oxford says this: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The traditional rule is that â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;shouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is used with first person pronouns (I and we) and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is used with second and third persons (you, he, she, it, they).

That would all be nice and tidy, except even Oxford admits no one adheres to that anymore.

The Oxford Learnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dictionary has this to say on the matter: â&#x20AC;&#x153;In modern English, the traditional difference between â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;shouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in reported sentences, conditions, requests, etc. has disappeared and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;shouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is not used very much at all.â&#x20AC;?

My feeling is the same as yours â&#x20AC;&#x201C; everyone says â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would like...â&#x20AC;? these days. Save your â&#x20AC;&#x153;should likesâ&#x20AC;? for Hobbit holes and heated arguments about which Beatles album is the best.

(Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the White Album â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even bother arguing that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sgt. Pepperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.â&#x20AC;? I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hear of it.)

St. George: origins of an icon Commentary by Don Knebel The Cappadocia region of central Turkey, home to Christian communities since the second century, includes dozens of churches TRAVEL carved inside the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unique volcanic rock formations. An eleventh century fresco in one church honored St. George, a favorite son, and originated an iconic image seen in churches around the world.

St. George was apparently born in about 275 A.D. in Lydda, Palestine, where his Cappadocian father had met his mother while serving in the Roman army. George, raised a Christian, became an officer in the military guard of Emperor Diocletian. In 303, Diocletian ordered his officers to repudiate Christianity or face death. When George refused to renounce his beliefs, he was tortured and then beheaded. Emperor Constantine, who legalized Christianity in 312, reportedly ordered a church built in Lydda to honor George, who became a saint in 494. Over time, St. George became associated with a medieval legend in which a maiden-devouring dragon terrorized a pagan village. As the story went, George slew the dragon and the grateful villagers all converted to Christianity.

In the 11th century, numerous Byzantine churches were built within the soft, cone-shaped rocks of Cappadocia. Frescoes, still colorful because of the absence of direct sunlight, decorated many of them. One fresco on a curved wall in the so-called

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Snake Churchâ&#x20AC;? (YÄąlanlÄą Kilise) honors St. George, whose father was raised nearby. The fresco portrays a haloed and armored George, sitting astride a festooned white horse and gouging a snakelike dragon with his lance. St. George is accompanied in the fresco, perhaps the earliest illustration of the legend, by St. Theodore of Amasea, a less well-known Christian martyr also associated with dragon slaying. Crusaders passing through Cappadocia took the story of St. George and the dragon back to Europe, with the dragon often assumed to represent Satan.

Researching the predictions for 2015 luxury outdoor living trends from nationally acclaimed garden OUTDOORS magazines and landscape architect associations was a bizarre disappointment. The stale forecasts were easy repetitions of the last 3 years. Fire features are popular and most families would love to have a backyard grill station. Really?

Let’s dig deeper with larger imaginations and scour what lifestyles Millennia’s, single parent families and encore retirees are intrinsically searching for.

BEYOND TRENDS Outdoor living has regained the relevance it had when boomers were hormonal teens.

We lived outdoors from morning until dinner, then snuck out again. Family BBQ gatherings on flimsy chairs around a wooden picnic table were beautifully engrained in our schedules and visiting parks was a weekly ritual.

That life is returning, only with more style!

Provocatively, THAT is the largest trend in America. Here are stimulating others: 1. Details are rising to the top. To capture them, designers are being forced to listen. Coercing ideas, hopes and visions from client’s imaginations is

imperative. The result? Incredible, low maintenance livable spaces with clean lines and gobs of color! And originality.

Finally.

2. Boundaries are being destroyed. In kind weather, inside / outside is indistinguishable. Cushy, comfortable, elegant furniture rivals leather sofas in the living room. Methods to stay warm or cool off, dining el fresco, ceiling fans, shade structures, all-weather lamps and televisions, convenient music… if it’s in your living room, it’s on your patio too.

3. Modern interpretations using classic designs and materials is my favorite movement. It’s thrilling to employ oldworld materials blended with an innovative material like galvanized steel or ipe wood. Throw in cinder block and crushed stone and I’m gasping in joy.

The Delivery Driver will need to be customer service oriented. The Driver will need to have a clean driving record, pass a drug screen & CDL physical, & be able to drive a singleaxle truck. A chaufferâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license is preferred. The Driver will also be required to maintain appearance of the vehicle inside and out, as well as, help out in the mulch yard when not on deliveries.
