“build season” tests the students. The hours are long, as the students devote three hours after school each day and even some time on weekends and holidays. The number of members from call-outs to now typically reduces by half, but Giltner said the experience benefits the students who stick with it.

“Some have come in here knowing nothing about this or never having used power tools before,” he said. “We train them and inspire them to pursue engineering or other similar opportunities.”

Chander, for example, will leave Carmel after graduation and enroll at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she will study aerospace engineering. She said her four years with the TechHOUNDS has been very beneficial and instrumental in setting up her post-college plans. Giltner said stories like Chander’s exemplify the purpose behind FIRST and the TechHOUNDS, and that’s why some sponsors are so willing to contribute.

“Once a sponsor latches on and sees what it does for students, they don’t stop,” he said. “It’s almost like an investment for them because these are kids who could be working for them some day.”

This year’s FIRST Robotics Competition will be a unique game called Breakaway, played on the field shown in the diagram. The game includes elements of soccer and foosball. Robots will be put into teams and charged with the task of getting as many balls in their own goal as possible without possessing them. The TechHOUNDS’ robot is designed to kick the balls.

It is our position that school boards must very carefully wield the immense power that they possess is the public discourse. Boards in Noblesville, Carmel and elsewhere are scrambling to avoid the cuts necessitated by the difficult economic conditions of 2009 and, it is projected, 2010, faced by all business and government entities. Under new powers granted by our legislature, the school executives are proposing referendum to increase taxes on homeowners directly to forestall the pain. In many cases, schools around the state are hiring consultants to help ensure the successful implementation of the tax increase.

We look forward to a robust discussion about the uses of these funds and others within the existing budget that might help offset the new tax. In addition to an effort to maintain the status quo, we should be considering alternatives to significantly cut expenses to create a more efficient mechanism to deliver public education. But like government officials and employees, board members, teachers and administrators must exercise great control to not use their public trust to self-interestedly advocate for or bully against honest, public discourse by and amongst those who pay their salaries.

It is our opinion that the recent warning from Moody’s Investment Services about the potential downgrade of the U.S. credit rating may be the most frightening economic indicator yet to face our new Congress and president. We hope it is a wake-up call to Washington and to each of us – without improved federal budget deficit management and positive indicators of economic growth, we risk loss of a the coveted AAA Government Bond Rating.

The White House 2010 deficit forecast of $1.565 billion represents 10.6 percent of our gross domestic product and is the highest ratio of debt to GDP since WWII – if Moody’s acts on its warning, like an increasing adjustable rate mortgage, we would pay more for the same and strain our wounded economy.

It is time for the president, Congress and American citizens to make the disciplined decisions and thoughtful sacrifices necessary to ensure our domestic and international economy and the U.S. dollar remain strong in the world’s markets. Each of us has the right (and the obligation) to make a commitment to voice an opinion to Washington leadership before the situation worsens. And we should make use of that right.

An age-old conundrum

The U.S. Senate has a plan to tax tanning salons 10 percent for services in an effort to help fund health care. Such an imposition would most certainly result in layoffs. When taxes come, expenses have to go; that means jobs. Health-care advocates say the tax will cut down on skin cancer occurrences. While that may be true, it’s known that “artificial tanning” also is of immense help in treating skin conditions. The bottom line is this: In order for this insanity to be propagated, it needs to pass the Senate AND the House. We hope it doesn’t.

••• Is the global warming effort falling apart?

Top U.N. climate change official Yvo de Boer is resigning after nearly four years, a period when governments struggled without success to agree on a new global warming deal. De Boer’s move follows the Climate-gate scandal, the leak of stolen emails from top climate scientists that revealed sloppy science, the suppression of dissenting opinions and, therefore, flaws in the U.N’s top climate policy document. We continue to urge a healthy dose of skepticism.

••• CLARIFICATION: Last week, we came out against a tax for regional mass transportation.

We indicated it would be a $180-per-person tax. In actuality, it would be up to an additional .5 percent in our sales tax, which in Hamilton County, given spending practices, could be well more than that per household. Of course, this would be a “forever” tax, just like the rest.

COMMENTARY

By Terry Anker Why is it that my gray hairs seem to be made out of something entirely different from the other hairs on my head? The shaved-head guy that cuts my ever-thinning locks tells me the follicle changes, and not for the better, as we get older. Add that to the list. The strands stick straight out and simply refuse to get along with the others near them. Is it that they are simply cranky about the ever-increasing loss of their brethren? Or are they just no longer interested in putting the effort into being a color (Kermit always said it wasn’t “easy being green”)?

As we age, does our malleability necessarily have to suffer? In some ways, we become more open to new ideas and able to process new ways of thinking. But we more often fall into ever more rigid patterns and self-limiting options. Even as my kids are moving towards being willing to consider more than a couple of options for dining out (yes, I like McDonalds,

but in moderation), my 87 year-old mother-inlaw is annually reducing the number of restaurants she will consider (yes, I like Hackney’s, but in moderation). Is our receptiveness to different restricted by the bell curve?

Perhaps, we are simply surer what we like when we are very young or very old. Or maybe we are searching in between and settled on the ends? But, I fear the ultimate culprit is fear itself. In much the same way that we believe a fright will turn our hair white, the tentativeness of youth can in many ways be correlated with the loss of confidence in the super-geriatric. So for today, I intend to be bold – at least for a few more years. Wish me luck – and a youthful attitude.

No matter what name you have for it, it still smells Commentary

By Danielle Wilson WARNING: READING THE FOLLOWING MAY INDUCE NAUSEA, ESPECIALLY WHILE EATING BEEF STEW OR FOODS CONTAINING MARINARA. “I love the smell of barf in the morning.”

While I disagree with my son’s sentiments, I find it the perfect way to start off this piece. My youngest has been vomit-free for 12 hours now, so I feel safe enough to share my experience without fear of jinxing myself or another member of my family. Lord knows I CANNOT live through another night like I had last night, at least not for another month or two.

I should have known things were about to get bad. My husband and I had just returned from a weekend getaway and, while feeling only somewhat rested, we were most certainly refreshed.

But when we went to collect our children from the grandparents, my nephew heaved all over their beautiful Oriental. I did a quick calculation to determine how long my angels had been exposed to the spew devil and decided we were probably in the clear.

Six hours later, our 5-year-old began complaining of stomach pains, but like all good parents, we chalked up her antics to attention-seeking behavior and/or punishment for abandoning her.

About an hour after that, she blew red chunks four times into the hall toilet. Yah, we were definitely not in the clear.

After quarantining the bathroom and Silkwooding ourselves with Clorox wipes and Dial soap, (safety first!) we put her to bed and tried to convince the poor thing that this was a one-time only occurrence: “Sweetie, you’ve gotten all those bad bugs off your tummy. You’ll be fine!” Swing and a miss.

She was not fine, nor would she be fine for the remainder of the night. Like clockwork, she threw up almost every hour on the hour until early morning. Most of the time, she reached the toilet, but

not always. A 1 a.m. cookie toss took place right in the middle of our bedroom, and despite the hand she threw over her little mouth, enough puke sprayed onto the floor that it was quite noticeable to me and my bare feet. Eww! At 3 a.m., she didn’t even make it out of her bed, though by that time, the only liquid left to ralf up on her comforter was the sip of water she had taken at 2.

I think I slept for three hours, four tops. It was like doing feedings back in Infantland, only I was awake more often and my baby was starring in “The Exorcist.” Thank goodness I had a slight head cold, because with the amount of gut acid I was swabbing up, I most certainly would have become a disgorgement causality myself if I’d have gotten even the tiniest of whiffs.

Which brings me back to my eldest’s breakfast table quote.

Quite literally, the house smelled sick this morning. Soiled sheets, towels, PJ’s – we’d left them all in a pile last night to be dealt with at a later and hopefully more awake time. I’m still waiting on that moment. In fact, I just now noticed that I have my drawstring sweats on inside-out and backward.

I’m not cut out for all-nighters anymore, and certainly not ones involving an upchucking pre-schooler who mutters such heart-breaking comments as, “I just want to be normal again” just as she’s regurgitated a Capri-Sun. Well, I’m off to sanitize my family. And can I get some props for the number of ways I referred to “vomit” in this column? That takes creativity, especially for someone who’s so tired her stomach feels ill. Uh oh. Peace out.

Performing Arts Foundation satisfied with Olympic ad campaign

By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel Looking to spread the word about the world-class concert hall under construction and its recent name change, the Carmel Performing Arts Foundation launched a marketing campaign during the television coverage of Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympics.

The television ads began airing on WTHR one day after it was announced that the 1,600seat concert hall of the former Regional Performing Arts Center will now be called The Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts. The public relations manager for the center, John Hughey, said the goal behind the marketing campaign was to both make local residents aware of the name change and to spread the word about the center to the rest of Central Indiana.

“Historically, the Olympics has been a great time for brands to launch,” Hughey said. “For Indiana, it’s the highest-rated event in prime time.”

Tim Warner, sales director for WTHR said the station’s standard primetime rate is $3,500

per 30 seconds. Hughey would not disclose the exact cost of the center’s highly viewed ads; however, he stated that the ads were a good value for the price paid. Hughey added that the station had been giving the ads good positioning and even running two for the price of one in some cases.

At the Feb. 17 meeting of the Carmel Redevelopment Commission, City Council member Ron Carter said some members of the City Council had expressed concerns over the timing and price of the ads and that so much money was being spent on advertising before the 2011 lineup has been announced. As for the timing, Carter said the Olympic ads are intended to work like movie previews, building awareness of the brand before the opening date. The price and lineup, he added, should not have to be disclosed yet by the center’s executive Director Steven Libman.

“I’m not sure if that’s something Steven Libman needs to be providing to the council,” Carter said during the meeting. “He can if he wants to, but if I were him I don’t think I’d be doing that.”

Carmel still looking for 96th and Keystone funding

By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel In September, the City of Carmel submitted a 25-page application to the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) seeking a $78.3 million TIGER grant, which is part of the stimulus act.

The money was intended to fund construction of a two-level roundabout at the intersection of 96th Street and Keystone Parkway, but after not receiving the grant, Carmel is left searching for other options to fund the project.

Mayor Jim Brainard said prior to the Feb. 17 announcement of grant recipients that, while he is usually optimistic about Carmel’s chances for grants, in this case he was not. The TIGER grant program had $1.5 billion to award and 1,400 applicants seeking about 40 times that amount. Brainard said the sheer volume of requests made it unlikely Carmel would be one of the 51 applications accepted.

“We knew it would be a long shot,” he said.

“We weren’t counting on getting it but we still tried.”

Brainard said the city has funding available to add additional lanes at the intersection but said that, while it will require additional funds, the creation of a roundabout would be a better solution.

He said Carmel will look at other federal grants to fund the roundabout, including additional TIGER dollars that are expected to be available in the future. The funding of other elements of the Keystone project, Brainard BRAINARD stressed, are not affected by the absence of TIGER funding. The money only would have been used for the 96th and Keystone intersection. While it is still unclear where funding for this portion will come from, Brainard said it should only be a matter or time before this is known.

“We have a good project and we’re confident it will get funded,” he said.

COMMENTARY By jeff Worrell The search is on. Anticipation is running high. Nerves are frayed, and some can’t take the suspense any longer. But the hunt continues, as experts look high and low for the next Monica Cannaley. Whoever you are, we know you are out there, and your community needs you!

Monica Cannaley is a real person, doing volunteer work predominantly in the world of green initiatives, Special Olympics and CarmelFest Spark Buttons. Bayh’s departure should prompt others to do the same

By Jason “Hogjawz” Peek The talk in the barber shop this week was about Evan Bayh’s upcoming departure.

Most people said they were glad that someone stepped up and said they were fed up with those in Congress. Others said this might be a move for him to do something else. Either way, all the people I talked to said that more politicians need to step up and take a stand. This country is affected by people who do things for their own political gain, and these are the people who make the rules and laws that they don’t follow.

We all know Congress is a pool of fools who take as much as they can get from lobbyists who tell them how to vote, and we just stand by and do nothing. Most of us at the shop hope Bayh will start a line of politicians who will stand up and say that Congress and the Obama administration are a joke and that we need new talent.

But how does the common citizen go against the Government when it runs the country?

Once you vote them in it seems they quit working for us and go on their own to decide what

they think is best. Congress and their bank accounts should be investigated every year and be held accountable for their decisions, but who do they answer to?

Maybe they should have four-year terms also so they can’t stay long enough to build power and friends, so to speak. Neither I nor any of our customers had all the answers, but it seems the people who sit in my chair have better ideas than the people in office.

I hope Bayh brings some of his buddies with him out of office. I know a bunch of good ol’ boys that would be happy to step in with a little common sense and love for our country and fellow man. Come back to Indy and take care of business, Mr. Bayh!

What are you into?

By Brandie Bohney “He’s Just Not That Into You” was the title of a somewhat popular movie of 2009. I haven’t seen it. And I’m not going to. But the title of the movie brings about an interesting grammatical conundrum: the use of into.

Use of into as a slang term to mean “deeply interested in” began in the 1960s, and while the usage still exists – thrives, even – in informal use, it’s not a use that should be employed in any formal communication. It’s perfectly acceptable for the title of a dopey romantic comedy, though.

But I’m not going to devote a whole column to the slang use of a preposition. I will, however, devote a whole column to the use of into.

There seems to be a great amount of confusion about when to use into versus in to. One of the most basic ways to determine whether you need one word or two is by listening to how the sentence sounds if you use to words.

Without his glasses, Marcus ran into the wall.

Mildly bruised, he came in to eat.

If you separate into in the first sentence, it doesn’t make much sense. The second sentence makes perfect sense, though. That won’t

work every time, but it’s a good starting point.

Additionally, if the word to is part of an infinitive verb form (to eat, to swim, to gargle), it cannot be part of the single word into. You cannot come into warm up or stop into visit. You have to come in to warm up or stop in to visit.

If that’s not enough, consider this: Into generally denotes an entrance of some sort, but in to refers to a location (versus out to, for example). So you can invite someone in to dinner, but you probably wouldn’t want them to invite them into dinner unless you have a really strange food fetish your friends are also involved in. Or you’re a cannibal.

I suppose you could avoid the confusion entirely by inviting your friends in for dinner. Oh, wait. Never mind. Invite them in to eat. Ack! Go out to eat, folks. It’s safer. As long as you remember the comma.

By Becky Kapsalis … IS good for the gander, too. I was watching a program on obesity in children on which the dilemma for the mom of two daughters was that one daughter (12) was perfectly within her proper weight, while the younger daughter (11) was 75 pounds overweight.

In order for the mom to help the obese child, she felt she had to feed each daughter differently. Not surprisingly, the doctor’s remedy was that the mom be consistent with a healthy eating lifestyle for both girls – and the entire family, for that matter. It looked to me that the mom could also benefit from a healthier eating lifestyle.

I bring this up because I believe the doctor’s advice on using consistent standards for healthy eating lifestyles also applies to consistent standards for healthy behavior lifestyles. For example, one child’s disposition accepts responsibility for poor behavior while another, within the same family, does not accept responsibility for poor behavior.

We scratch our heads wondering how they can be so different. And then we figuratively beat ourselves up over how to handle each child. Here, then, are steps to consider, regardless of the temperament, disposition or age

Three sisters, one school – quite the adventure with about five minutes to spare.

We seem to have rules for everything. Katie gets the backseat, while the non-driver gets shotgun. Every once in awhile, she can sneak up there without us making her move, but she usually gets the short end of stick. Being the youngest must be rough. However, she certainly has her ways of dealing with it. You would think she gets picked on the most, but somehow it seems to be the exact opposite.

Ali fits the role of the middle child. She has developed an individuality that stands out among us three. She has excelled in athletics. I used to think I was good at sports until Ali came along. Let’s just say she passed me up fast. Being the oldest is hard, having a younger sister who is faster and better at sports. But I found my way into my own.

Throughout this year we have all three grown in different directions. Even though we have our differences and been through ups and downs, I am looking forward to the next few months. I wouldn’t change this time together.

COMMENTARY

By Maddi Bourgerie It has been an interesting school year, one that will not come around again. My two younger sisters and I are all enjoying a last full year of schooling together. Attending the same high school has been interesting; I can say we have definitely learned much more about each other.

Being three girls, getting ready to go to school in the morning is a big challenge. Having only one hair straightener is a dilemma, and we won’t even get into the screaming wars over clothes that could wake the neighbors. Let’s just say it’s a good thing we have a patient mother.

We all have our routines in the morning that sometimes clash. Almost every morning, Ali, the middle sister is downstairs first, ready to enjoy her breakfast. I come slowly behind, and not being a morning person, everyone knows not to say anything to me.

Then there is the youngest, Katie, always pushing everyone’s buttons. She comes down dead last. The rule is that everyone must be down stairs by 7:10, or else you ride the bus.

Let’s just say Katie pushes it up to about a 10 second countdown, usually making it just in time, after we have yelled her name multiple times. Eating breakfast on the go then deciding who is driving, we usually make it to school

The urban legend of the large room COMMENTARY

By Vicky Earley Once and for all, I would like to shatter the urban legend of the “DeepColored Paint Shrinks Room.” It is an erroneous belief that the only way to make a room appear larger is to paint it a light color!

The real secret to the illusion of space is to walk the eye where you want it to go, regardless of saturation of color! Because the belief of “pale color equals big room” has permeated the core of our decorating culture, I know I am going to have to offer hard evidence to prove my point.

Consider where drapery panels are hung in a room. Most homeowners will plaster those puppies about an inch above the window molding and call it a day. Well, well, well … if I could have my drapery installer on hand at all times, I would, on the spot, have him re-mount them close to the ceiling. The difference would be immediately evident.

Still dubious? Consider my rendering that shows an elevation and two identical windows. One set of panels is hung the way so many homeowners are prone to do. The other is hung closer to the ceiling.

If you are now a believer in the art judicious positioning, another recommendation is to refrain from using a severe horizontal valance or cornice.

Anything that draws a bold line across the top is going to pull the ceiling down.

the eye into moving up and down so the eye does not stop at the lowest point of the cornice.

This strategy holds true for a bath, as well. When mounting a shower curtain, hang it higher than usual for drama and the feel of higher ceilings.

In the dining room, try chairs with a higher than normal back. Highbacked chairs are dramatic and work to take the eye from the floor up!

In the kitchen, brightly colored or reflective elements of interest that are carefully positioned above the cabinets, will attract the eye and help create the illusion of height and space.

So now, grab a paint roller saturated with a deep color, a marshmallow on a stick and gather around the Viking Cooktop and tell stories about the House of Blue Lights!

By Angela LaSalle, M.D. How important is that small butterfly-shaped gland in your neck known as the thyroid? Every tissue in your body requires the thyroid hormone to function optimally, and having too much or too little thyroid can cause widespread symptoms affecting both mind and body.

Fatigue, unexplained weight loss or gain, menstrual changes, dry skin, hair loss, heart palpitations, sleep issues, foggy thinking, muscle aches and constipation or diarrhea are only some of the symptoms associated with alterations in thyroid function.

Screening for thyroid issues can be done by checking the TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) level, a signal hormone produced by the pituitary. It is important to note the TSH level runs opposite of the function of the thyroid gland. If the TSH is running high, the thyroid is under producing thyroid hormone.

This is called hypothyroidism (hypo = low). If the TSH is low, then it is called hyperthyroidism (hyper = high).

Medications can be used to supplement low thyroid hormone levels, while symptoms of overproduction can be treated by medications, or in more severe cases, having the thyroid

treated with radioactive iodine or surgery.

Since the normal laboratory range for TSH is fairly broad, those with a family history of thyroid disease or non resolving symptoms consistent with thyroid problems may ask their doctor to check free levels of the two most active thyroid hormones, T3 and T4, along with thyroid antibody testing to rule out a thyroid issue caused by a person’s immune system attacking the thyroid gland, known as thyroiditis.

The symptoms of a thyroid disorder can be subtle and come on slowly, or triggered quickly by a physical stressor such as a viral infection or childbirth. The elderly, perimenopause, or persons with autoimmune or endocrine problems such as diabetes are also at risk for developing thyroid problems.

Because the symptoms of a thyroid problem overlap with other potential causes, it can be easy to miss a thyroid issue. So, if you haven’t been feeling your best lately, consider asking, “Hey doc, could it be my thyroid?”

By Dr. David Sullivan All too often I see patients who present to my practice complaining of significant pain they have had for three, six, nine weeks, sometimes months. They think it will go away without realizing what the actual problem is.

Sometimes they can attribute it to a certain event, such as spending all day walking in flip flops at the mall or going on a vacation where they walked a lot on the beach. But more often, they have no idea what caused the pain. The dangers of assuming foot or ankle pain will go away are serious. A couple of the more glaring examples: Minor stress fractures that occur for different reasons can, if left untreated, develop into true fractures with displacement of bone and a possible need for surgery. A stress fracture can be adequately treated most of the time with a rigidsoled shoe or boot and no “down time.”

Are you self-conscious about a massage?

By Sally Feldman Do you have apprehension about your body image? Are you unsure how awkward a massage would be? Are you convinced that you’d never be able to actually relax during a massage? Well you aren’t alone.

Some of the more common concerns are: being overweight, having excessive hair growth on the body, acne on the face or back, disliking the appearance of one’s feet, and scars.

Being self-conscious shouldn’t stop you from considering a massage, just as it shouldn’t stop you from seeking any form of medical care. But, I am a realist. Most of us are NOT that comfortable with our bodies, and because of this, communication is essential. Before the massage, it is important to talk to your therapist about what your expectations are, and how you feel comfortable and (just as important) what makes you feel uncomfortable. If you are still uneasy, here are some other alternatives for you: • You can opt for a therapy that is done through clothing, such as thai or shiatsu massage.

• You can choose a session of clothed, assisted stretching.

• You could opt for 30 minutes of just back, foot, head and neck massage.

• You could consider trying one of the hundreds of modalities that may fit your needs.

Ask your therapist about their specialties.

As you build trust, you may feel more apt to try some of these new modes of massage.

Remember, this is about YOU, not your therapist. Also, you may want to ask if you could meet the massage therapist before you book the appointment, and feel free to specify a male or female therapist.

This is your hour and your body – don’t allow your trepidation and fear to stop you from relieving your pain and getting healthy.

Fat Atom unveils aerosol mural during Gallery Walk

By Haley Vannarsdall Current in Carmel During the Gallery Walk on Feb. 13, Fat Atom Internet Marketing debuted its new location in Carmel’s Arts and Design District and unveiled an aerosol mural painting on the inside of their office walls. The painting was created by two Broadripple aerosol artists known as the FAB Crew.

“We wanted to show aerosol art in a positive way as a legitimate art form and as a cutting edge piece of art,” said Vicki Burdick, Fat Atom public relations specialist.

Tours and refreshments were offered from 5 until 10 p.m. During this time, the public was invited and welcomed to stop by and meet Fat Atom owner Todd Muffey, as well as enjoy the freshly painted mural. It took a week of consecutive painting and the majority of three days to finish. The artists, who met at Ben Davis High School, started out by sketching the outline and then they began the painting process.

The mural had no theme in general, but was painted with vivid colors and in a positive way, rather than the negative connotation that is often perceived with aerosol art forms such as graffiti. The new location was really the movement behind the mural.

The Fat Atom team chose to relocate its office because it is a design company and wanted to be a part of the art community. With the new mural painting and a new location, the Internet

The worst enemy a berry can have COMMENTARY

By Chef Michael Vlasich If you read my column with any regularity, you know I am desperately seeking out the warmth of spring and summer, having already begun the journey mentally. This week, while I was surfing the Web for spring break flights to Florida, I ran across a statement that could be false this year because of an enemy. It said, “February is fabulous Florida strawberry month.”

But looking in the store, this was not the case.

In fact, we will be lucky to see them at all this year, due to the worst enemy a berry can have, unseasonably cold and violent weather.

Originally native to both Europe and the Americas, berries are now are cultivated from Alaska to Chile. The U.S. produces 75 percent of the world’s consumption; the rest come from Canada, Japan, Australia and Africa.

Strawberries are the first fruit to ripen in the spring each year, and they are the only fruit with seeds on the outside of the body. Technically they are not from the berry variety; they are from the rose family. Remember this fact, as it may win you big money on a trivia game show some day.

The strawberry has long been a symbol of love and the mythical god Venus. It is one of the special foods considered an aphrodisiac, and it has amazing nutritional values, as it contains considerable amounts of vitamin C, folic acid, potassium and fiber, and it is considered an antioxidant.

Strawberries are fat free, with one cup of unsweetened strawberries having only 55 calories.

In ancient times, medicine men believed they cured everything from fevers to gout, kidney stones, depression, blood diseases, infections and fainting. In other venues, stone masons used them in carvings on pillars, in churches and government buildings to symbolize perfection and righteousness. One interesting historical fact is there is no mention of strawberries in the Bible, even though they have been around forever.

strawberry trifle Ingredients: • 2 pints fresh strawberries, tops off and cut in half (save 4 each whole berries with tops to garnish) • 1 jar strawberry sauce • 1 each 8 oz. loaf pound cake cut in 1/2“ cubes • 1 small box Jell-O custard mix (do not make until ready to assemble) • ½ pint whipping cream made into sweetened whipped cream Directions: Use 4 tall pilsner or champagne glasses.

Make the custard according to the recipe on the box, and whip cream when you’re ready to make the dessert. Mix the sliced strawberries with enough sauce to bind and sweeten the berries. Begin by taking some berries and putting a layer in the bottom of the glass. Next, place a layer of cubed pound cake. Next, place a layer of custard, then a layer of strawberries, followed by a layer of whipped cream and another layer of cubed cake. Continue layers until glass is full. The top should be whipped cream topped with a whole strawberry with to

By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel Donna Kishbaugh has a recipe for success that’s proving effective. Her combination of artistic abilities, business savvy and relentless hard work helped her launch a brand that’s gaining international attention.

The Westfield resident and mixed-media artist earned her master’s in creative writing before taking a job in pharmaceutical marketing. Eventually, she decided to leave the guaranteed paychecks of that profession to focus on her primary passion: art. She didn’t forget the lessons learned from that previous job, though, and she’s been able to combine her artistic skills and business sense into a career that’s taking her places.

Kishbaugh said her art comes in many forms and is heavily influenced by her travels abroad as well as her theatrical background, but regardless of the skill and creativity involved, she said she could never survive only creating the items she wanted. So she ditched the canvases and sculptures in an effort to create art that was functional. Though she still dabbles in other media on demand, Kishbaugh is best known for her one-of-a-kind handbags, jewelry and tin art.

“The marketing side of me said you have to create things that are going to sell,” she said. “These things speak to women. In this economy, I don’t care how bad it is, they will buy handbags.”

Over the past months, Kishbaugh’s business has boomed, and so has her brand. Many of her items, she said, are nearly impossible to keep in stock. Thanks to word of mouth and her efforts in online marketing, she recently began selling to her first international customers in England and hopes to reach more countries in the near future. However, some of the most notable recipients of Kishbaugh’s art reside in the United States.

Recently, Kishbaugh has created custom art for numerous celebrities including Sharon and Kelly Osbourne, writer Ray Bradbury, members of the rock band The Clash, the Pontani Sisters and local art enthusiasts Mindy Eiteljorg and Margo Lacy Eccles. Kishbaugh also created a unique handbag based on the 2005 film “Dreamer” and presented it to

the movie’s co-star Dakota Fanning at the premiere.

“You should have seen her face. She was so excited,” Kishbaugh said. “Anytime I make something for someone, I don’t care who it is, if they’re that excited about it, it warms my heart.”

Last September, Kishbaugh essentially put her work on display for the entire world at Fashion Week in New York City. A designer she knows was preparing to display her cloth-

ing line in the show but needed jewelry and handbags for her models. Kishbaugh offered her work for consideration, the designer loved it and soon models were strutting down the epicenter of the fashion world wearing accessories created in Westfield.

“You know how many people want to get into New York Fashion Week? We’re talking millions,” said Kishbaugh’s husband, Greg. “She decided she wanted to do it and she got it done. To me, that’s pretty freaking amazing.”

If she returns to Fashion Week this year, Kishbaugh said her art will be the featured item on the runway – not a mere accessory.

It’s a perfect example of the drive and ambition that took this Sheridan native as far as she’s come, and Kishbaugh said she hopes her success can inspire other local artists to pursue their own dreams.

“I think it’s important to let people know that you can do whatever you want,” she said.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re from a small farm town. You really can do whatever you want.

You just have to work hard.”

Fire on the Waters: A Novel of the Civil War at Sea

By David Poyer On April 9, 1861, the U.S.S. Owanee, a sloop of war, leaves New York City to join other ships in a mission to supply the small contingent of starving soldiers at Fort Sumter with provisions and troops after South Carolina secedes from the Union. Lieutenant Ker Clairborne, second in command of the Owanee and a Virginian of high principles, is committed to the U.S. Navy and doubtful that his native state will join the secessionists. Civilian Elisha Eaker volunteers to serve on the Owanee, having broken his engagement with his cousin Araminta, and turned his back on his father’s wealth.

Araminta, an orphan living with Elisha and his father, is seeking an independence that she believes obtainable when she receives her family’s inheritance. Also on board the Owanee are engineer Theodorus Hubbard, who maintains the steam engines while dreaming about an invention to replace coal with liquid fuel, and Caesar Augustus Verity, a runaway slave working under the name of Calpurnius Hanks as he prepares his own secret plans. The events that unfold in April 1861 will change the lives of these five individuals and affect the preparedness of the U.S. Navy as it enters the Civil War. Fans of naval adventures will appreciate “Fire on the Waters” for its depiction of a navy in which sail and engine-powered ships still coexist. Likewise, readers who enjoy Civil War stories will be entertained and enlightened by this different perspective of Civil War fiction. Wellknown for his contemporary naval series, David Poyer has written an action-packed story filled with intriguing characters.

Spice up that routine chicken dinner with coconut, citrus glaze

By Molly Herner Current in Noblesville Here is an easy recipe to please the Caribbean side in all of us.

Start with either boneless, skinless chicken breasts or tenders.

This recipe calls for frying, so have the vegetable oil ready. Heat the oil until it is very hot and will cook a small piece of chicken through easily.

Exact temperatures are hard to give because stoves all vary in strength, but the oil should be around 300 degrees.

This is a great way to spice up your weekly chicken dinner. Kids like it, too. Serve as an appetizer or over white rice for dinner.

Coconut Battered Chicken Bites with a Citrus Glaze Ingredients: • Chicken breasts or tenders • Shredded coconut • Bread crumbs • Eggs • Vegetable oil • 2 oranges • 1 lime • Half of a white onion • 2 large cloves garlic, minced • Brown sugar • Butter Directions: 1. Cube chicken breast into bite size chunks and heat oil in a sauce pan.

2. Mix together about 2 cups of bread crumbs and 1 cup of shredded coconut flakes.

3. Whip 3 eggs until combined in a separate bowl.

4. Coat chicken thoroughly by first immersing piece in the egg and then in the breading so the crumbs and coconut will stick.

5. Test a few pieces first to make sure the oil

is hot enough, or not too hot. The chicken should take about 45 seconds to 1 minute on each side to brown and cook through. This process can take awhile but only because you cannot load all of the chicken in the pan at the same time, which will alter the temperature of the oil.

6. When all of the chicken is fried set the pieces aside to drain the oil on a paper towel.

7. For the citrus glaze finely chop half of a large white onion and a few cloves of garlic and sauté in a pan with olive oil and a few pats of butter.

8. When the onion is translucent add the juice of 2 oranges and 1 lime.

9. Let this simmer over medium heat until it is thickening and then add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar.

10. Let simmer until it is thick and combined.

Add salt to taste. If the sauce caramelizes, add more citrus juice to thin it out.

11. Pour the sauce over the coconut fried chicken.

By David Cain It is midday on a Saturday, I’m home alone with the kids, and we are watching the sun glistening on the falling flurries. My oldest daughter, who is almost four years old, and I are both staring out the window wondering what the day holds for us. Our ritual Saturday journey to Costco for sure, but what else? Her little 2-yearold sister hovers nearby, not old enough to participate in this C-level discussion, but keenly interested nonetheless. I asked the oldest, “What do you want to do today?” Her reply was surprising and adorable: “Let’s go trick-or-treating!”

Admittedly it was an outlandish request, but it actually made some sense. Why were there so many rules? Why couldn’t we go trick-ortreating in January? Well, aside from the obvious hurdles – the snow, no costumes, and the likely reactions from neighbors – I found something reasonable in her energetic request. I was feeling a bit like getting out of the house too, and

I couldn’t think of a time when candy is a bad idea.

We didn’t go; instead I negotiated a visit to the CVS candy isle. We went as well bundled up travelers, our ghost bag we swapped for a small metal cart, our “trick-or-treat” was replaced with a “thank you,” and the whole deal cost us just more than $20.

This day reminded me I shouldn’t limit my thinking. She had redefined thinking outside the box. She was an innovator with no limits.

As I push on with my workdays, I think while I drive to work, “Let’s go trick or treating today!” and then remember I can do anything I want.

Well, anything I want or some suitable and calendar-appropriate alternative.

By Ryan C. Fuhrmann j2 Global Communications (Nasdaq: JCOM) is a tiny but profitable provider of online fax, voice, email and other call-handling services.

Recent growth trends have soured along with a downturn of the overall economy, but j2’s valuation already discounts these more tepid nearterm trends, which could pique the interest of a strategic acquirer.

Third-quarter sales increased ever so slightly, rising 0.3% to $61.8 million on a modest boost in subscriber revenue.

In terms of profitability, gross margins improved eight basis points to 81.8% of sales, while operating margins improved 220 basis points to 43.1% of sales. Management claimed its “operational excellence” contributed to a 2.7% boost in net income to $19.3 million, or a healthy 31.2% of sales. Diluted earnings improved 2.3% to 43 cents per share as shares outstanding increased slightly.

2 Global’s free cash flow exceeded reported net income and grew an impressive 74% from last year’s Q3. Analysts currently project full-year earnings of $1.85 per share, which puts the stock at a very reasonable 10.51 forward P/E. They expect revenue to improve a modest 2% to $246.4 million. j2 also sports nearly $5 in cash per share on the balance sheet and boasts no long-term debt. Returns on invested capital are also impressive.

Bottom line: Investors stand to benefit from a number of angles. Sales and profit could return to the double digits, the low earnings multiple could expand or a strategic buyer could emerge.

Dating hard for single parents

By Rachael Noble Are you headed down Single Parenthood Lane? Typically, a myriad of concerns arise once reaching single status. Should you date now or wait until the kids are grown? Is it your duty as a dedicated parent to remain single and sometimes lonely in the midst of all these families and married couples? Is it selfish to want to be in a relationship?

Single parents get pulled in so many directions – between guilt, martyrdom, feelings of inadequacies and always questioning our decisions when it comes to dating. And if we do decide to date, the big question is if and when should we introduce our kiddos to our new potential mate.

Some experts say to wait until time of engagement. Others would say introduce them early on so your prospective mate and your child can decide if they get along.

In my personal opinion and in a perfect world, I would suggest waiting to introduce your child(ren) to your date for as long as you possibly can. As much as we like that old familiar “family” feeling, as parents we need to remember our child’s emotions are so much more important than our romantic notions. Once we’ve had time to sort things out, and the relationship is tried and true through good times and bad, then perhaps it’s time to bring up the

topic of an introduction. Ideally, this would be several months into the relationship.

However, a tough scenario is the single parent who has full custody and perhaps very few opportunities to date. It’s hard to get to know someone going out on rare occasion and only seeing them in the evening – say, after your children go to bed – so that you’re not allowing the introduction too early. I truly understand the dilemma here. Although holding out as long as possible is ideal, perhaps consider introducing your kids to your potential mate for the first several months only as a friend. Spending time and having fun together with no pressure or expectations may allow a child to drop her defenses and become relaxed over time.

So single parents, remember to keep your romantic fantasies of filling the family void in check. Put yourself in your child’s place and remember, she may not share your feelings of giddiness and excitement over your new relationship. Keep communication lines open and give her time to adapt and to grow into the situation.

Keeping your privates out of Google Buzz COMMENTARY

By Gary Hubbard For those who haven’t been paying attention, the world is in the midst of another communication revolution and Google (of all tech companies!) is actually trying to catch up with the crowds with Google Buzz.

I view the current “social revolution” as the third great shift in the personal computer revolution, and anyone who ignores it will essentially be “off the grid” in the near future.

The initial revolution of the personal computer made way for the Internet revolution, which has now transitioned into this social revolution that most of us are still trying to figure out.

In today’s world, you would view any person or company that did not use personal computers or the Internet as out of the loop and a bit odd; the same will occur in the near future for those who don’t engage in the social revolution.

As a consumer, what is your perspective of a business or individual in today’s tech age that doesn’t have a Web site or doesn’t use e-mail? Over time, this view will be the same for companies and individuals that don’t use the social technologies that are exploding.

Social tech is not a fad, and Google knows it. Facebook is the current king of social tech,

with an estimated (as of this writing) 400 million users worldwide. To put it into perspective, if Facebook were a country, it would now be the third largest in the world behind China and India.

Google Buzz is a new option that is appearing only for those who use Google’s e-mail system Gmail.

In its current iteration, it looks like Google is trying to cut into Facebook’s turf and integrate features that are similar to what Twitter is all about.

It can serve as a basic “aggregator” for various social media sites, but oddly it has no integration with Facebook (which is why most are

speculating it is the target).

Frankly, Google Buzz is so new that unless you are an “early adopter” of technology, you should probably let them get through a couple of development cycles with the early adopter crowd before you jump in.

Unless you’re using Gmail, it’s a moot point on using it, as there is no standalone version of Google Buzz.

The biggest concerns in the early stages of Buzz seem to be in the area of privacy, primarily in the area of the way you automatically get followed or start to follow others.

If you are a Gmail user and want to avoid any of the privacy issues being voiced by critics, you need to do more than just click on ‘Turn off Buzz,” as that simply turns off what you see, but not necessarily what you are participating in.

Does that sentence look familiar? It should.

It’s from my column last week. The line made my wife laugh. She giggled about it all night.

Yes, I enjoy entertaining Mary Ellen, but I do not depend on her for just laughs. I also need her to annoy, befuddle or exasperate me. That’s where my column ideas come from. And for the past nine years, she’s been a trouper. She’s complained about my napping, my sense of direction and my messiness. She’s told me how scatter-brained I am. She has been my rock.

Lately, I have started to lose a little confidence in her abilities.

Ideas? We don’t need no stinking ideas COMMENTARY

By Mike Redmond Just as a way of reminding us they really ARE out of ideas on the left coast, the Entertainment Cabal is at this moment brewing up a remake of the old TV series, “Hawaii 5-0.”

What’ll they call it? Hawaii 5-0.2?

Look, we already HAD a Hawaii 5-0, and one was plenty. Whose idea was this, anyway?

Book him, Dan-o.

Wait, wait. It gets worse. That’s TV. Over on the movie side of the street, they’re even more bereft of creativity, which is why they’re concocting new versions of (hang on to your popcorn): • The Shadow • The Phantom • The Fantastic Four • Daredevil And other examples of comic-book-generated spectacles that were widely regarded as giant Stinkburgers the first time around. Hollywood: Taking flops and turning them into … more flops!

Actually, you could count The Shadow as radio generated, although the number of people who actually remember The Shadow on radio – or for that matter, radio itself – grows smaller by the day. It would join the coming movie of The Green Hornet, which is in fact a movie based

on a TV show based on a radio show. What I’ve heard of the radio show was pretty good; what I’ve seen of the TV show, not so much.

Which apparently is one of the qualifications for remakes of this sort – it has to have a really bad first version somewhere along the line, so Hollywood can come along and make a really bad second version. As proof, I give you backto-back bombs about The Incredible Hulk.

Now, don’t think Hollywood is picking on the comic book industry alone, even though there will be another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie we didn’t need. Studios are also busy cannibalizing their own products. It’s a show business Donner Party.

How about a new version of “Guys and Dolls,” except that the story is being moved to London, which makes sense because … OK, it makes no sense at all.

Or “Arthur,” the movie about a lovable drunk that was a hit until people realized that alcohol addiction really isn’t cute and cuddly with a happy ending.

“Barbarella,” anyone, about the beautiful space libertine who va-va-vooms her clothingoptional way across the galaxy? OK, that one I might want to see.

There are others – “The Creature from The Black Lagoon,” “Judge Dredd,” “Alien,” “Highlander,” and coming-next-December

“True Grit.”

What’s going on? I think the generation coming into power in the entertainment industry has been raised on a constant diet of digital, wide-screen, stereophonic input. They were parked in front of TV sets and computers for so many hours that they have lost the part of their brain where imagination used to dwell.

Am I done? Of course not.

I just saw that Garry Marshall, a director I like, has been talking about wanting to adapt “Laverne and Shirley” for the big screen. Oh please, Garry. Don’t. This has been going on for years and it seldom works. We all saw the movie version of “The Beverly Hillbillies,” for example.

Oh, wait. No, we didn’t. Which turns out to be a good thing.

You wait. Before this is over, someone will want to do a movie version of “Green Acres,” too, complete with Oliver, Lisa, Eb, Mr. Haney, Sam Drucker, the Hoyt-Clagwell tractor and Arnold the pig. It’ll fail, though.

No self-respecting pig will want to be involved.

Needling pain relief for dogs COMMENTARY

By John Mikesell Acupuncture helps dogs with the side effects of cancer (and its treatments).

Here is what you can do: • Get a confirmed cancer diagnosis before seeking out the assistance of a veterinary acupuncturist.

• Look for a veterinarian who has earned the designation of Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA).

• Inform your dog’s oncologist of your plans to utilize acupuncture in her treatment plan; a complementary approach is best.

• Maintain realistic expectations about how your dog will respond and focus on quality of life; acupuncture is not a cure for cancer.

Randomized clinical trials in humans have shown acupuncture is effective for dealing with chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting as well as post-operative pain, cancer-related pain, chemotherapy-induced lecopenia (excessive reduction in white blood cells), fatigue, xerostomia (unusual dryness of the mouth), and possibly insomnia, anxiety and quality of life.

The National Cancer Institute notes that the oldest medical book known to man – written in China 4000 years ago – mentions acupuncture being used to treat medical problems.

Acupuncture has been used for about 200 years

in the United States.

Susan Wynn, DVM, CVA of Georgia Veterinary Specialists in Atlanta, Ga., has been using acupuncture with her cancer clients for 11 years. She notes we’ve not yet seen studies conduct using dogs as subjects that are similar to studies that have shown positive results in humans. However, she adds, “Anecdotal evidence mirrors what has been shown in people.

The species are similar enough, and there are enough historical data that we feel confident using some human studies as guides to what we do.”

Acupuncture will not cure cancer, but it is the quality of life for our furry friends that we are all looking for, so the decision to use acupuncture is a personal choice. Check with your veterinarian for recommendations.

He does not know his own strength or size, so right now this big guy needs to be in a home with teens who can handle his level of excitement.

Dempsey is a sociable boy, happy for every little thing that happens his way. He knows the commands “sit,” “down” and “speak.”

He has all the right stuff to become a wonderful family pet, but his new owners should consider taking him to obedience school. Dempsey is neutered and even though you not notice it, Dempsey has an injured knee that will require surgery (CCL to be exact) and this will mean we need to raise funds for him and find a foster home where he can recover.

Navajo is a 2-year-old female tabby with white DMH. Navajo has such an angelic face, and she is a snuggly love-bug who will purr and purr! She has the softest fur, making you want to hold and pet her all day. Navajo is a very sweet and affectionate girl, and the stress of the shelter environment is sometimes too much for her to handle, and we know that if she were in a home environment she would be so much happier!

We should all agree with Matt COMMENTARY

By Bob Walters In the autumn of 2000 at Purdue University, fliers mysteriously appeared around campus with the question, “Do you agree with Matt?”

A serious buzz enveloped the campus – Who was Matt? It was almost on par with the buzz created by that season’s Boilermaker football team, which would earn its first Rose Bowl berth since 1968.

Matt was Matt Cahill, a non-football-playing senior at Purdue who hailed from Hamilton Heights High School, class of 1997, where he had been an outstanding student and soccer player. Even now, just about this time every year, HHHS announces the winner of the Matt Cahill Soccer Scholarship.

Matt was also a serious Christian and something of a marketing genius. As the Purdue Exponent student newspaper reported in early 2001: “Cahill, a senior in the Schools of Engineering, was the Matt of the ‘Do You Agree With Matt?’ campaign last October. Members of Campus Crusade for Christ wore lime green T-shirts that read ‘I Agree With Matt,’ and they covered campus with fliers asking the mysterious question, “Do You Agree With Matt?”

In the end, Cahill revealed the mystery by giving a speech about how Jesus Christ became the center of his life.”

In the “reveal,” Matt’s testimony ran in the campus newspaper. He wore a T-shirt that said,

“I Am Matt.” And at mass campus rally Matt presented his compelling and eloquent witness, that boiled down to this … he believed Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God, and Matt trusted Him as his Lord and Savior. Amen.

Most cheered; some jeered.

How big was the buzz? Indy Channel 13 put the story on the late news.

Two months later, Jan. 2001 was a bleak month at Purdue.

On Jan. 1, the Boilermakers lost 34-24 to Washington in the Rose Bowl. Putting that setback into perspective, on Jan. 26, Matt was riding with his friend Jacob Cushman, a Purdue sophomore and Christian musician, when both were killed in a car crash on Indiana S.R. 26 in Grant County.

The October campaign compelled bold members of the Purdue campus community – professors, students and at least one notable athlete – to sign on to the campaign via advertisements and interviews proclaiming, “I agree with Matt.”

One of those very public proclaimers was the senior quarterback of the Boiler football team, now 2010’s Super Bowl MVP, Drew Brees.

True story.
