However, McMichael said the district should avoid starting the school day too late, which would push back after-school and extracurricular activities later into the afternoon and evening.

CCS Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment Martha McFarland said the recommended time for classroom instruction is approximately 340 minutes per day, leaving only 50 minutes for lunch, recess and transition time in the current schedule.

“That leaves us short 30 to 45 minutes for what we would like to accomplish for elementary students,” McFarland said.

CCS Assistant Supt. of Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment Amy Dudley, who also serves as co-interim superintendent, did not rule out implementing a new start time for the 2018-19 school year, although she said it will likely take years to implement all of the Dudley recommendations.

“There’s no way you can do everything at once,” she said.

The school board is expected to continue its review of the elementary evaluation at its next meeting, set for 7 p.m. Feb. 26.

Superintendent search under way

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel Clay Schools board of trustees announced Feb. 12 that Michael Kerschner has been tasked LEADERSHIP with leading the search for a new superintendent.

Kerschner, who was elected to the school board in 2014, said the search process is under way. The board held a Kerschner closed-door meeting before its Feb. 12 work session regarding the superintendent search, and he said many more executive sessions will be scheduled as the process continues.

The school board has asked the Indiana School Boards Association to assist with the superintendent search.

“They will be helping us coordinate our application process. They will be gathering applications and organizing them for us,” Kerschner said. “We will be gathering community input on qualifications of a superintendent that members of our community think is important.”

The district is likely to gather community feedback through an online program such as Thoughtexchange, Kerschner said.

The district has been without an acting superintendent since October 2017 when Nicholas Wahl was put on administrative leave. CCS announced his resignation Jan. 12 but has remained tight-lipped on the circumstances behind it. Wahl will be paid through June 30.

After much debate about a proposed full-time bicycle administrator at city hall, the Carmel City Council has decided to redefine the position. After receiving a new CITY COUNCIL job description from the department of Community Relations & Economic Development, the position has been broadened to include more than just bicycles. It would be called a “transportation development coordinator” and would handle all forms of transportation in Carmel.

Worrell The position hasn’t been approved but was given a positive recommendation in committee and sent to the full council for a final vote, likely on Feb. 19.

City councilor Jeff Worrell said he hasn’t decided how he’ll vote, but he likes the job description better than the previous bicycle administrator role because it includes clear goals and an idea of how taxpayers would benefit.

“This is a much better proposal than the previous one,” he said.

Worrell said about half of the $69,000 salary plus benefits would come out of the Mayor’s Office budget. In addition, the job will be opened up for anyone to apply. It was previously assumed that a particular individual was targeted to fill the role.

Worrell said some of the goals for the administrator would be to improve Carmel’s ranking as a bicycle-friendly city from bronze to silver, get national attention in publications and increase the number of electric-car charging stations within the city.

FBI honors Ascent 121

By Heather Collins news@currentincarmel.com Ascent 121, an organization that provides clinical recovery services for central Indiana teens, has gained ACHIEVEMENT national recognition for its contributions to the advancement of justice.

The FBI presented Carmel-based Ascent 121 with the 2017 Director’s Community Leadership Award Jan. 22 at the FBI office in Indianapolis. A formal award ceremony will take place at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. on April 20.

Sarah Abdullah, FBI victim specialist for the Indianapolis Division, said Ascent 121

has been invaluable to the success of the agency’s cases.

“Victims of human trafficking often have a palpable distrust of law enforcement.

We are fortunate that Ascent 121 works to calm fears and create opportunities where their clients can see that we actually do care about what victims have experienced,” Abdullah said.

Ascent 121 Chief Operating Officer Megan Jessup said the response to human trafficking and commercial exploitation of children requires a joint effort. Ascent 121 hosts monthly meetings with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept., the FBI, Dept. of Child Services and the Indiana State Police.

Bingo to benefit Chaucie’s Place

FUNDRAISER On March 9, BarnRaisers of Indiana, with title sponsor Ambrose Property Group, will host March “Bingo” Madness, a fundraiser for Chaucie’s Place Lifelines Youth Suicide Prevention Program.

The event, which also includes a silent auction and wine pull, will be at the Knights of Columbus, 2100 E 71st St. in Indianapolis. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Bingo starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person.

Guests are encouraged to wear their favorite college team shirt for a chance to win a prize.

Food and Friends is the theme of the 12th annual Celebration of Life event benefiting the O’Connor House, a FUNDRAISER Carmel nonprofit that provides a Christian home to help single, pregnant, homeless women improve life for themselves and their children.

The fundraiser is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at Lindley Farmstead at Chatham Askew Hills, 20820 Lindley Farm Rd., in Westfield.

O’Connor House Development Director Nancy Imhoff said the fundraiser is expected to cover a quarter to a third of the nonprofit’s operating expenses for a year.

“We don’t have any government money or grants,” she said. “(The fundraiser is) really key to our mission and being able to provide the resources we offer.”

The night will be hosted by former “Master Chef” contestant Tanorria Askew, a Carmel resident.

Former Disney artist continues to defy the odds

school in Quebec, where she received a better education than she could have back home. In 1991, her entire family moved to Los Angeles.

It was a welcome move for Duarte, who had a lifelong dream of working in film. “(As a kid) I was watching the Disney cartoon ‘Cinderella’ and was magically enthralled by it, the way the mice would make the dress for Cinderella and the part where they were singing, ‘We can do it, we can do it,’” Duarte said. “It just stayed with me, the

For Amy Duarte, moving to Zionsville was the perfect Hollywood ending.

In her case, it included sayDESIGN ing goodbye to her career as a visual effects artist for major film studios and a cross-country relocation from Los Angeles to Indiana.

Now, Duarte, who has been defying the odds since she was born almost completely deaf in Indonesia, works as a motion designer at Avant Healthcare in Carmel, a far cry from Tinseltown. But she couldn’t be happier.

“It’s almost like the marriage between the medical field and the artistic field. It just worked out perfectly,” said Duarte, who creates graphics and videos to make medical concepts understandable for the average consumer. “I’m using the skills that I used in Hollywood here.”

Magically enthralled Duarte, 40, spent the first decade of her life in Jakarta, a place that provided few opportunities for people with disabilities.

So, when she was 11 years old, her parents sent her to live with her aunt and attend

Duarte enrolled in classes at California State University, Northridge and caught her first big break during her freshman year.

She had been mailing comic book-style letters to her friends, using cartoons to depict life events. One friend had left a letter on a coffee table when a commercial director stopped by for a visit and requested to connect with the artist behind the images.

That led to a job creating commercial storyboards for McDonald’s when Duarte was just 19 years old.

A dream come true During her junior year, Duarte landed an internship with Disney. After graduating college, the studio hired her full time.

Carmel High School’s girls swimming team surpassed coach Chris Plumb’s typically high expectations.

SWIMMING “It was a phenomenal group performance,” Plumb said. “This group came so far. I could not have expected this after last year’s meet. I did not envision us swimming this well.”

The Greyhounds captured their 32nd consecutive IHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving team state title Feb. 10 at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI with 363 points, well ahead of second-place Northridge’s 215.

A hot start set the tone.

“It was great to start the meet off with three straight wins and some really phenomenal performances,” Plumb said.

“We started off winning five of seven (events). We knew we were going to be front-loaded.”

The Greyhounds started off winning the 200-yard medley relay, followed by junior Kelly Pash winning the 200 freestyle and senior Trude Rothrock capturing the 200 individual medley.

Rothrock then won the 100 butterfly and Pash Rothrock won the 100 freestyle.

In the final event, Rothrock and Pash joined junior Grace Pangburn and Ashlyn Underhill in the winning 400 freestyle relay.

Pash, Rothrock, Pangburn and senior Grace Estabrook were on the winning 200 medley relay.

Rothrock’s four state championship medals boosted her career total to 10.

“Words can’t really describe the journey I’ve gone through all four years,” said Rothrock, who will swim for the University of Tennessee next season. “I’m so glad I got to end on this note.”

Soccer dream comes true

By the time Eric Dick reached high school, soccer was a passion. By the time he got to college, it was a caSOCCER reer ambition.

Now, it’s his vocation.

On Jan. 19, Dick — a former standout at Carmel High School and Butler University — was selected in the first round of the 2018 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by Sporting Kansas City. He was the 13th overall pick and the first keeper taken.

Playing professionally has been his goal since college.

“This is something that I really like doing, and I’m going to try my best and do everything in my power to make this a potential career, so this is absolutely a dream come true,” said Dick, a 2013 CHS grad. “I’m very happy to be here.”

An imposing 6-foot-5, 205-pound athlete, Dick helped lead Butler to a 14-5-2 overall record. Along the way, the Bulldogs won the regular season Big East championship and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, matching the longest postseason run in program history.

A first team NCAA Division I All-American, Dick was named Big East Goalkeeper of the Year after tallying a team-record nine shutouts and posting a 0.97 goals against average and a 0.82 save percentage.

“I honestly didn’t even know they were interested in me because they didn’t talk to me at all during the (pre-draft) combine,” Dick said. “They kept it very close to their chest, but I am very happy because I was born in Kansas, so it’s sort of like a fullcircle thing.”

Born in Roeland Park, Kan., Dick’s family moved to Carmel when he was 5 years old.

He grew up in Carmel and played two varsity seasons at CHS before playing for the Indiana Fire Academy his senior year.

One of four keepers on Kansas City’s roster, Dick has already appeared in some preseason matches and looks forward to the March 5 regular-season opener against visiting New York City FC. “The team itself is just unreal, the situation I’m in with them,” said Dick, whose parents are Randy and Nina UndermanDick. “I’m very, very blessed with this opportunity. It’s a really cool situation.”

“I wanted to build COVER STORY a fireplace behind my house,” the longtime Carmel resident said. “I didn’t know anything about bricks or how to build a fireplace, so I thought I’d look on YouTube and surely someone will show me how to do it.

There wasn’t anything. There was no one who would show you the whole thing end to end. I was kind of frustrated.”

So, Wozniak got books from the library and spoke with some bricklayers.

“I tried a few things myself, and I just figured it out,” Wozniak said. “I made a video that I would have wanted to have. I put it up and forgot about it. But then I looked back and it was No. 1 (in views) when you type in brick fireplace for three years (on YouTube). It’s still No. 4. It got hundreds of thousands of views.”

HowToLou was born with that 2010 video, and many other how-to videos followed.

Wozniak’s videos topped 10 million views Feb. 10. He has posted 250 videos. He gets an average daily viewing total of 8,000.

The biggest beneficiary of the videos has been his wife, Karen.

“It has been a huge help to have Lou doing all of the projects that he does,” Karen said. “We have done so many upgrades and fun things to our houses that we would not have necessarily done otherwise. For example, we would never have had a ping pong table lower from the ceiling like in our last house, or our two-story chandelier lower for cleaning and bulb replacement like we do in this house.”

Karen’s favorite project is still the first one, the outdoor fireplace with a built-in grill.

“We love to use our deck and backyard, and this has really enhanced the whole atmosphere back there,” Karen said. “It was also fun because I designed it and he built it, so it was a bit of a joint effort. He did a really nice job, and it came out beautiful.”

Wozniak, 50, has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois. He has been with AT&T since 1999.

“I’m a software engineer by trade,” Wozniak said. “I love building things, anything

with tools. I just love working with my hands. My idea of a good vacation would be locked alone in my workshop for a week.

It’s not a job, it’s just fun for me.”

Wozniak likes making the videos.

“I enjoy editing,” Wozniak said. “Editing a video is like editing a paper. As an editor, you make sure there is no redundancy. So, if I have eight screws to put in, I’ll show one and won’t show all the others.”

Wozniak, who said he likes to teach, said many other how-to videos drag on.

“I try to not waste the viewers’ time, get to the point and make sure they understand and then move on,” Wozniak said.

“Every week, I get comments saying, ‘This is how all how-to videos should be done.’”

Wozniak said he usually shoots an hour of footage and trims it down to a video that is five minutes or less.

“It is a labor of love. I wasn’t intending to make money,” Wozniak said. “I didn’t realize you could make money, but after awhile YouTube started sending me emails saying they wanted to put ads on my videos.

For a long time, I thought, ‘Go away, I don’t want your silly ads.’ Then finally, I decided to try it. The first month I made $30, and I thought no big deal.”

However, the monthly check total started growing and he made approximately $800 for November 2017.

Typically, viewers come to Wozniak’s YouTube channel for specific projects, so he doesn’t have as many subscribers as other channels with his number of views.

“I have a lot of one-hit wonders,” Wozniak said.

His friend, Dave Claus, who previously lived near Wozniak in Carmel, helped him with a video comparing the Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe grills.

“I think people like his videos because he approaches them from an engineering standpoint and user-testing standpoint,” Claus said.

Wozniak said he has 10 videos on how to begin flowboarding and perform certain maneuvers.

If that wasn’t enough to keep Wozniak busy, he also has hosted a foosball league in his house twice a month for 15 years. And, naturally, there are some videos on techniques for that as well.

“We take it very seriously,” Wozniak said. “It’s not just spinning around. I invented three products that are for training.”

His son, Luke, a car mechanic, lives in Carbondale, Ill., and shares his father’s love of foosball.

Commentary by Terry Anker “You are brushing your teeth all wrong,” she said, seemingly a bit concerned that the basic skill had not been mastered some years earlier. Was the well-intentioned hygienist serious? There was a bit of indignation.

But as the reasons behind the admonishment unfolded, her point was made. The expertise, though long mastered, had been interpreted through the eyes of a child and lacked maturity.

Taught to pursue the exercise in personal hygiene about the time we exit elementary school, most of us assume that we’ve long figured out the task and have it fully under control. We know how to brush our teeth.

Yet, is it conceivable that techniques have improved, needs have changed and, perhaps, we shouldn’t let a 9-year-old determine how we maintain our oral health?

It is said that one cannot teach an old dog new tricks. But how many decisions in our lives, made years before, continue to constrain our thinking and limit our alternatives? How much could we advance if we simply undertook to improve our method?

Many argue that change for its own sake is a good unto itself. Others rightly hold that consistency is the superior plan. Is there a place between the two – one that urges us to routinely reevaluate our behaviors and thoughtfully update them?

There is little doubt that old habits die hard. Still, we know that they rarely die of natural causes. If we took inventory of the choices that rule our lives, how many of those choices have long outlived their freshness dates?

Well, it’s finally happened, friends. The dreaded “I hate you” came spewing forth from my 13-year-old after I HUMOR grounded her, along with an evil stare worthy of Damien himself. I replied, “I love you!” But as soon as she slammed her bedroom door, I burst into tears. Teenage girls!

I should have known my time would come. My older daughter has been a relatively drama-free child. I don’t know whether she bottles it all up and vomits her vitriol quietly in the night or if she’s one of those kids that is rarely phased by anything. Regardless, I’ve been lulled into a false sense of security that running the mom-of-girls marathon would be over a flat course with frequent hydration stops and plenty of motivational signs.

Wrong! I can’t say anything right. I’m either too “up in her grill” or not involved enough, and all of my rules are stupid.

Furthermore, none of her friends have ever been grounded, and how does keeping her home on a Saturday night teach her anything, anyway? “Don’t talk to me!”

Ugh, I hate this discipline stuff. Mothers are programmed to make their babies happy, not ruin their lives, which, according to her, I’m clearly intent upon doing. And Doo’s out of town, which means I’m in the parenting ring alone against a strong-willed eighth-grader who’s not afraid to throw a sucker punch.

I know I’m doing the right thing and that she’s merely testing her boundaries, but sweet mercy. If this is a sign of things to come, I’m in deep trouble.

READERS’ VIEWS ‘Wage gap’ fabricates inequality

Editor, I am responding to the Reader’s Views page concerning equal pay for women. The rights of women have come a long way since Mary Wollstonecraft, Hannah More, Susan B. Anthony and Frances Willard. We should remain diligent to sustain these rights but not create additional inequality by conjuring issues that are not factual.

A real issue ignored, most especially by such groups as the American Association of University Women and the National Organization of Women, is the inequality such groups promote against men. Research has illustrated the negative effects of gender politics in our educational system—to the detriment of our boys and our society.

I don’t want to see these effects in the economy, too.

The “wage gap” is a perfect example of fabricating inequality where it does not exist. At its core, the “wage gap” claim is faulty, because crucial variables are omitted. The raw wage gap is calculated by finding the average wage earnings of all men and women. It does not take into account the multiple factors that affect this score.

For example, personal choices of men and women play a huge role in future earnings. Women typically choose careers in fields that are nurturing or afford flex-

ibility. In a 2011 Bureau of Labor Statistics report, women dominate careers such as speech-language pathologist (95.6 percent), elementary and middle school teacher (81.7 percent), and social worker (81.6 percent). Even when looking at higher-paying careers, such as pharmacists or doctors, women are paid less because of personal choices. Women are more likely to choose financially less lucrative specialties like pediatrics over higher paid ones such as cardiology. In these fields, even full-time working women work less on average than men. Males work on average 2.4 hours more than women in the same fields leading to more work experience. More work experience translates into higher wages.

So, why do women, on average, work less than men? It’s not discrimination. It is due to their choice to leave the paid work force either to birth a child, raise a child or care for an elderly or sick family member.

American women are free, self-determining individuals who make their own choices, and many of them choose to stay at home to nurture their own.

The most obvious reason that I, as a woman, am not concerned with the “wage gap” issue is this: the Equal Pay Act of 1963 makes it illegal to discriminate based on gender.

Editor, We have been living in Carmel for four years now. Living here is wonderful for my family and me. I also enjoy reading Current in Carmel from cover to cover. You are doing a great job of keeping Carmel residents abreast of what is happening.

One thing we would really like to see is some type of factual article related to Carmel’s drinking water. As we all know water is one of the most important ingredients we all living beings depend on for our survival.

My family is very health conscious just like all other residents are. Yet, we don’t hear anything ever addressed about drinking water in Carmel. Is it safe to drink tap water or not?

I will admit that I know very little about drinking water issues. Therefore, I would like to start a conversation with fellow readers on drinking water. It is probably true that almost all homes in Carmel have water softeners. Average water soften-

ers can cost as much as $4,000 to install.

These require salt to run, which is not cheap either. Without soft water, plumbings, fixtures, etc. in homes are damaged; dishes do not clean properly; clothes do not clean; and many other problems occur.

Many homes also have some sort of drinking water filtration system, which are expensive to install and run. On top of these we all keep buying bottled water.

With all the money homeowners spend on drinking water, would it be reasonable to give some more taxes to the city so it can take responsibility to provide clean and drinkable water to all of us? Is the well water safe to drink? Can the state health department inspect city water and well water and report how safe are these waters for public health? Does the City of Carmel inspect water quality before sending into homes and businesses?

School of Rock camps boost interest, ends in show

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel resident Kristin Rauh called enrolling her son Aidan, now a Guerin Catholic High School freshman, in his MUSIC first School of Rock summer camp in 2013 one of the best decisions she ever made.

“Being totally immersed in the music for five days allowed Aidan to explore his interest with several different instruments,” Rauh said. “The summer camp gave us an opportunity to trial the School of Rock program and introduced us to the amazing instructors and staff. We loved it so much we’ve been with the program ever since.”

Amy Tobias said the camps have been the perfect thing for her son Sam, a Carmel Middle School eighth-grader, to do in the summer.

“School of Rock is a wonderful atmosphere for kids to not only grow their musical talents, but also grow their confidence and teamwork and develop great friendships,” Tobias said.

Sam is signed up for the Classic Metal camp this summer.

Elyse Causey, School of Rock regional manager, said this is the seventh year of camps in Carmel and the second year in Fishers.

“The beginner camp might be our most popular,” Causey said. “It’s a great way for

younger kids to not only start learning an instrument but to become fully immersed in learning one, and to really jumpstart their learning. Parents are always amazed that when they drop their kid off on Monday having never picked up an instrument before, and they come back for the end of the week show on Friday, their kid is not only playing an instrument but playing in a band, and playing fun rock songs.”

Causey said students who have been playing for a longer period have their choice of themed camps: a Foo Fighters camp in either Carmel or Fishers, or a Classic Metal or Songwriting camp in Carmel.

“These camps are designed to help push students in their skills on their instrument in drums, keyboard, guitar, bass or vocals by being fully immersed in playing in a band setting for a full week,” Causey said.

“The students perform eight to 10 songs on Friday afternoon on the patio at Soho Cafe in Carmel or the Kroger patio in Fishers in front of family and friends.”

Causey said the Fishers site is offering a shortened summer camp for ages 6 to 7 in the week-long rookies camp, which will meet for three hours each day.

This year, Fishers Parks and Recreation is expanding its summer camp offerings.

“This year is all about opPARKS tions,” Parks Director Tony Elliot said. “In the past, we have done half-day camps and a range of different camps from recreational to environmental and educational-based camps.”

“Some of those full-day camp offerings are focused on technology,” Elliot said.

Camps are $75 for a whole week of halfday sessions and $150 for a whole week of full-day sessions. Registration for Fishers residents opens March 1, and registration for non-registration opens April 2. Camps begin June 4 and run through July.

Fishers Parks and Recreation also offers benefits to students on free and reduced lunch programs.

“For our summer camps, we provide camp for no cost to students through the

HSE school system who are on free lunch and 50 percent off camp for students on reduced lunch,” Elliot said. “We waive those fees based on the needs the families might have.”

Experienced and novice sailors ages 8 to 17 will have a chance to learn something new during IndiaON THE WATER napolis Sailing Club’s Junior Training Camp on Geist Reservior in one-week sessions for six weeks beginning June 18.

“I really believe that this camp, other than being such a unique experience by being on the water and learning how to sail and being in a sailboat, it teaches a lot of good, lifelong lessons,” sailing camp director Michelle Sarber said. “We talk about the weather, we do a lot of knot tying, and knowing how to sail is just one of those skills. We have kids 4 years old and sailing and older adults in their 80s still sailing.

It’s really a lifelong sport.”

In addition to the Junior Training Camp, which targets novice, intermediate and advanced levels, the Indianapolis Sailing Club will offer a new, three-day race camp for advanced sailors only.

The camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Kids are encouraged to bring their own lunch and are required to bring a life jacket. Some of the camp takes place in a

classroom, so camp is not canceled due to adverse weather.

Discounts are offered to those who sign up for multiple weeks of camp or sign up more than one child. Members of the club also receive discounts.

Each camp tops off at 30 kids, and Sarber said the adult-to-kid ratio is 1 to 4.

There is no registration deadline, but the spaces do fill up.

Campers to experience ziplining

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Ziplining, archery and swimming are just a handful of activities offered during the Boys & Girls Club of NoADVENTURE blesville’s Camp Crosser.

The camp offers sessions for spring break, summer break and fall break. Registration for summer break camps opens March 26. Camps begin June 4 and continue through July. Camps last one week, with an overnight camp each Thursday.

BGCN Director of Development Nathan Helm said registration is first come, first served, and slots fill quickly. Sixty campers will be accepted for each summer session.

“The purpose of Camp Crosser is to provide our local youth with an opportunity to step outside into nature and experience the adventures it has to offer. Camp is an experience that every kid deserves, and there’s nothing like watching their faces light up that first time they experience our zip line across the White River,” Helm said.

“In a high-tech, fast-paced world, our kids need that chance to step away from their devices while learning and exploring the great outdoors.”

Camp Crosser is for youth ages 6 to 12 and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Campers can be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. and stay until 6 p.m.

Campers must be a BGCN club member, and the price to participate in the camps is $100. To become a member, cost is $45 and includes after-school care throughout the year. Prior to registration, non-members can fill out a membership form online or at the BGCN office at 1700 Conner St., Noblesville.

Students ages 6 to 13 will have the opportunity to learn valuable STEM – science, technology, engineering EDUCATION and mathematics – skills while playing the popular game Minecraft.

Indy STEM Camps will offer six different Minecraft options with 30 camps at six different locations around central Indiana with camps beginning June 4 and continuing through July 20. Camps range in prices, beginning at $150 for three hours a day for one week. Registrants have the opportunity to sign up their children for two sessions a day for a full-day camp as well.

Camp sites this year include Zionsville, Carmel, Indianapolis, Avon, Noblesville and Fishers.

Although Indy STEM has offered other types of camps in the past, Indy STEM Camps director Matthew Mullholland said Minecraft camps are the most well-received.

“Minecraft is such a popular game among elementary and middle school children because it allows children to explore and create and to use their imaginations like

no other computer game can,” he said. “Our camps provide a safe and secure social environment that integrates STEM through the use of a computer game that students know and love.”

Among the different camps, kids learn coding, 3-D printing and more by playing Minecraft.

“It is a setting that allows them to develop STEM-related skills in a game they already know and love,” Mullholland said.

HEPL to kick off reading program editorial@youarecurrent.com Just off of its winter reading challenge last month, Hamilton East Public Libraries in Fishers and Noblesville READING will again offer its annual summer reading program, “Libraries Rock,” beginning June 1 and lasting through July 31.

Camp Cathedral will kick off its annual summer camp programming in early June with nearly 40 camp programs, STEM and this year, the camps are unique, covering many areas of interest, including academic and STEM camps, to camps on cooking, writing and filmmaking and more.

But some camps, like the week-long Mermaids & Unicorns Camp for kids in Kindergarten to grade 3, may stand out among the rest. Camps on popular book and film franchises, like Harry Potter and Star Wars, along with the annual Superhero Camp, also will stand out.

About a dozen of Cathedral’s camps have a strong science, technology, engineering and math tie, covering popular themes like Minecraft and Lego.

New camps include a Moana Island Adventure Camp that follows the Disney animated film “Moana,” a Lost World of Dinosaurs Camp, and a We the People Constitutional Law Camp.

Cathedral’s most popular camps are its adventure camps. Selling out last summer, the adventure camps are offered in five sessions through June and July for grades 5 to 9.

Stop, you’re killing me!

The other day, my wife’s cell number popped up on my caller ID. “Hi, Mary Ellen.”

HUMOR “I adore you,” came the reply.

My wife is a loving person, but she is not given to romantic declarations on her way home from work. And yet, she added, “Sometimes, I can’t get through a minute without thinking about those romantic times we had in Rio.” What could be more romantic than Rio? The problem is: I’ve never been to Rio. I kept listening: “While my husband is still alive, we will never find happiness. We have to get rid of him. Soon.”

I found this disconcerting.

Then I heard a man’s voice: “You are the brightest star in my galaxy, the cherry on my cake, the rose in my bouquet.”

It was bad enough my wife wanted me eliminated, but being killed with clichés was not how I wanted my life to end.

When Mary Ellen got home, I let her know I was aware of her desire to have me whacked. I wasn’t subtle.

“Mary Ellen, you are the brightest star in my galaxy, the cherry on my cake, the rose in my bouquet.”

“I’m so embarrassed. How did you hear that?”

“You accidentally hit redial on your cellphone. I overheard the conversation in your car. How long has this been going on?”

“Since last month. I was trying to end it, but you know how hard that can be. Once you start something, you feel like you have to finish it. I’ll pay the penalty.”

“You’re certainly cavalier about the whole thing. How much longer do you see this continuing?”

“Not much longer. My book on CD was due at the library yesterday. It’s trashy, but I have enjoyed it.”

I’m glad Mary Ellen doesn’t want to liquidate me, but she is hurt that I was so suspicious. So far, I haven’t been man enough to say I’m sorry.

As of today, the apology and the CD are a day overdue.

Office cleaner rises to owner

However, the entreLEADERSHIP preneurial spirit struck the Mexican-American, who now owns his own Office Pride franchise primarily serving Carmel, Westfield and Fishers.

While at Ivy Tech, Ascencion, who moved with his family from Mexico to Indianapolis when he was 3 years old, started selling advertising for a Spanish newspaper.

The 26-year-old North Central High School graduate began working for Office Pride, a commercial cleaning operation which specializes in commercial work, while at Ivy Tech.

“The owner had some smaller accounts but then purchased more accounts,” Ascencion said. “I was 18 years old when I started, and six months later I was promoted to supervisor. We had 25 employees.

After a year and a half, I was promoted to general manager. He had purchased accounts from another franchise owner and we were up to 80 employees.”

Ascencion credits his former boss, Scott Gipson, with his success.

“I wouldn’t be here if weren’t for him,” Ascencion said.

In 2016, he was Office Pride Employee of the Year at the national convention.

In August 2017, Ascencion purchased his franchise. He soon plans to move from the south side of Indianapolis to the north side.

“I purchased some of the accounts in Carmel that I had been servicing since I was at Office Pride,” Ascencion said. “I have about 20 employees right now. I’m trying to get college students to work for me.”

A heart-to-heart conversation Commentary by Mark Fisch February may be most associated with Valentine’s Day, but it’s also Heart Month and a great time to learn SYMPTOMS the symptoms of a heart attack.

What are some lesser known facts about heart attacks?

A common misconception about heart attacks is that they are painful, particularly in the chest. This is not always the case. Instead, you could feel pain or discomfort in your arm or jaw. You could also have nausea or unusual breathing.

Men and women might also have different heart attack symptoms. The most common symptoms for men include pressure (chest discomfort), shortness of breath, discomfort in one or both arms, discomfort in the neck or jaw, cold sweat or nausea. Women might also have chest pain and some of the previously mentioned warning signs. More often than men, however, women might notice breathlessness, fatigue or that they just don’t feel quite right.

What happens during a heart attack?

Your heart muscle needs to receive a

good blood supply at all times to function properly, and your coronary arteries supply the blood. Without adequate blood, the heart lacks the oxygen and vital nutrients it needs to work properly. This can cause chest pain. A heart attack occurs when a coronary artery becomes blocked, stopping blood flow to the heart muscle.

If you think you’re having a heart attack, it’s important to remember that the moments following the heart attack matter the most. Call 911 immediately if you experience symptoms, and don’t drive yourself or loved one to the hospital.

Emergency response personnel can start treatment on the way to the hospital. The goal is to treat you quickly and limit damage to the heart muscle.”

One of the reasons people don’t act fast enough is because they don’t think they are actually having a heart attack.

If you experience any symptoms, seek medical attention.

Strokes don’t stop CHS senior

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com It won’t be how she originally planned it, but Carmel High School senior Bella Simons isn’t planning to let two FUNDRAISER strokes and a major brain surgery stop her from participating in the annual Dance Marathon.

Set for 4 to 10 p.m. Feb. 24 at CHS, the event is a fundraiser for Riley Hospital for Children, which Simons credits with saving her life.

Simons had her first brain surgery at Riley in October 2015 to remove a tumor, during which doctors discovered another tumor. She spent six weeks receiving radiation treatments and had been enjoying normal high school life until suffering a stroke during a college visit in November 2017.

Doctors believe the radiation treatments damaged arteries and led to the stroke.

During surgery Jan. 11 to prevent future strokes, Simons suffered another stroke.

She woke up unable to eat, speak or walk but has been making a steady recovery since then.

Bella hopes to return to school in late February. She’s missed out on the CHS events leading up to Dance Marathon, but she’s managed to remain one of the top fundraisers, collecting more than $3,700.

Although she can’t dance, she plans to stop by the event to share her story and thank organizers for giving back to Riley — and her family.

“The students participating in Carmel Dance Marathon have supported our family through providing meals and visiting Bella,” Tasha Simons said. “They made cards, a poster and gave her CDM swag.”

Dance Marathons are scheduled at more than 60 Indiana high schools and colleges, and they are among the fastest-growing fundraisers for the hospital.

Larry Adams is ready for history to repeat.

“About 10 years ago, I first shared the stage with Daniel Shock and THEATER Earl Campbell in Yasmina Reza’s ‘Art,’ a comedy examining the strain placed on the friendship of three French men by the purchase of a purely white painting,” Adams said. “This was one of my favorite show experiences in a nearly 30-year community theater career, and so when director Lori Raffel offered me the chance to do a show with these two gentlemen again, I jumped at it.”

Carmel Community Players will present “American Buffalo” from Feb. 23 to March 4 at Carmel Community Playhouse. The David Mamet play takes place in a junk shop in Chicago.

“After seeing that production of ‘Art,’ I set out to find the perfect role for these same three guys,” Raffel said. “The result is ‘American Buffalo.’”

Adams said anyone who has read a transcript of a normal conversation has experienced pages full of half-sentences and people talking over each other about subjects that seem completely unrelated.

“On the page, this can seem completely incomprehensible, but when heard aloud it strangely enough makes perfect sense,” Adams said.

Taste of Carmel set for March 1

The 15th annual Taste of Carmel, benefitting Orchard Park Elementary, is EVENT set for March 1 at the 502 East Event Centre, 502 E. Carmel Dr. The VIP party starts at 5 p.m., followed by the VIP and table guest entry at 6 p.m. and general admission at 6:30 p.m.

Karla Walsworth is the event chair for the Taste of Carmel committee and is treasurer of the Orchard Park PTO board.

“We have a unique situation at Orchard Park compared to other Carmel Clay schools,” Walsworth said.

Walsworth said financial assistance is provided to approximately 40 percent of OPE students to cover items such as lunches, school supplies and book rental. The PTO board then decides what to use the remaining funds for, such as field trips.

Walsworth said the committee is made up entirely of volunteers.

“We have 45-plus vendors, and that number has grown since we moved to 502 Centre because it’s bigger than where we

were previously,” Walsworth said. “We usually have about 1,000 people every year, so it’s a big group. Our committee has grown to meet the needs of our fundraiser. It’s a lot of fun.”

The tastings come from restaurants, breweries, wineries and caterers from Carmel and the north side of Indianapolis.

There will be a silent auction as well.

Walsworth said $13,000 was raised from last year’s event.

Based on the children’s book first published in 1957, the Civic Theatre production of the tale of a tall, mischievous cat who wears a red and white-striped hat runs from Feb. 21 through March 1 “There is a sound effect for everything,” director Anne Beck said. “It keeps the sound operator and the cast completely insynch while audibly giving this storybook life off of the page. Everything is meant to resemble the original book. The black, white and red costumes. A lot of the pictures in the book are recreated with items that come on to assist, such as the door, the red box with the tricks in it and props to all aid the pages of the book unfolding.”

First, let’s look at when to not capitalize seasons. The basic rule is: do not capitalize seasons when you are using them generically. Here’s an example: In Narnia, it is always winter, never Christmas.

Now, when should you upgrade seasons to proper noun status? When seasons are part of a proper noun, capitalize them. For example: now that the Winter Olympics are over, I don’t know what to do with myself. And another: During Fall Semester 2005 I had a mystery virus that stumped all the doctors on campus. Eventually, my body fought it off, and I survived.

With my remaining word count, let’s examine fall and autumn — which is it? I like “fall” because it says what it is; not only do the leaves start to fall, but the temperatures do as well. In fact, spring and fall both appeared in English in the 16th century as “spring of the leaf” and “fall of the leaf.”

Autumn came from the French word automne. At this point, fall and autumn are interchangeable. I prefer “fall,” but won’t judge anyone who uses “autumn.”
