A proposed trail expansion would connect an existing trail that ends near Tall Timber Run to 146th Street. (Submitted image)
Trails considered on east side By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation is looking to expand its trail network on the east side of the city. The CCPR board GIVING BACK on Feb. 11 reviewed the results of a feasibility study regarding two trail expansions near the White River. The proposed north trail would run south along the east side of River Road beginning at 146th Street before entering land owned by Conner Prairie to connect with a proposed river ecology center. The trail would then run along the bank of the White River and connect with the existing trail system near Tall Timber Run. The expansion is proposed to include a new trailhead with parking and restrooms and two river overlook areas. The south trail expansion would begin at River Road Park, cross the White River and run east through Fishers on land owned by Conner Prairie just south of the history museum’s developed area. It would end at Allisonville Road. The estimated cost to construct the trails is $9.6 million, with approximately $2 million more needed for design and inspection fees. CCPR board member Josh Kirsh said he supports moving forward with the project.

“Whatever this (cost) ends up being, it’s a small price to pay for the generations of enjoyment,” he said. “This is a big thing, us engaging the river in this way.” CCPR Director Michael Klitzing said Conner Prairie is funding a feasibility study for the river ecology center, so CCPR agreed to conduct the trail feasibility study. He said CCPR and Conner Prairie are partnering to apply for grants for both projects. He said the recently increased park impact fee could help fund the trail expansion. Ben Deichmann, who presented the study on behalf of Indianapolis-based SJCA Engineers & Surveyors, said some challenges in building the trails are difficult soil conditions in some areas and likely archaeological reviews of the trail proposed on Conner Prairie’s property.

As modern medicine helps people live longer and catch certain conditions earlier, HEART HEALTH cardiologists are diagnosing a wider range of problems in a larger pool of patients. Some of those same advances are helping physicians provide treatment in a much less invasive way. At IU Health North in Carmel, doctors are usLambert ing cardiac-specific MRI and CT scans and ultrasounds with 3-D capability to look inside the heart without surgery, according to Nathan Lambert, director of cardiology for IU Health North, Saxony and Tipton hospitals. Other new technologies also are helping make treatment less painful for patients, he said. “Everything is becoming less invasive, and we are focusing more on being proactive in preventing heart disease,” Lambert said. Future treatments are only expected to make the patient experience even better. Artherosclerosis, a common buildup of plaque that often leads to heart attack, stroke and other problems, can sometimes present in areas very difficult to place a stent. Eventually, its location may not be a major concern. “We will soon have technology that breaks down this calcium using ultrasound, similar to breaking stones in the kidneys. This will Iqtidar make a lot of very complex cases of advanced atherosclerosis much easier to treat,” said A. Farooq Iqtidar, interventional cardiologist at IU Health North, Saxony and Tipton hospitals. Iqtidar said in a few years doctors hope to be able to use nanotechnology to treat atherosclerosis.

CCS eyes new logos By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com Since the beginning of the school year, a group of digital design students at Carmel EDUCATION High School have been working on a project to help Carmel Clay Schools rebrand. At a Feb. 11 workshop, the CCS board of trustees reviewed logo options aimed at encompassing the district’s high school, middle and elementary schools. “A logo and tagline are our foundation to our identity and helps tell the story of who we are and what we are about,” said Courtney Taylor, CCS’s community relations liaison. In spring 2019, administrators worked with the high school’s DECA students to come up with three tagline options — “Find Your Future,” “Excel Without Limits” and “Together We Achieve.” The second phase of the

rebranding project focused on connecting the taglines to a new logo. Led by CHS art teacher Michael Lee, students Alexa Barreras, Stephanie Breeze, Connor Chadwick, Luis Milano Chambert, Andrea Arana Gomez, D.J. Lloyd, Cidney Owen and Sarah Seigel designed four final logo options. “We wanted to encompass all schools in the district,” Lee said. “So, we had to think a little bit larger than we normally think, but we really dove into the elementary and middle schools and had to decide what all of those together would look like.” Board members did not choose a final design at the meeting. Taylor said there is no timeline for when the final logo will be selected.

The Carmel Clay Public Library wants to spark the community’s interest in an emerging technology by presenting a 3-D LIBRARY Printing Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 29 in the Program Room. 3-D printing is the process by which a three-dimensional object is created from a digital file. “The printer is sent instructions, and it melts plastic at a very high temperature,” said Peter Konshak, CCPL computer technology services manager. “It lays the plastic down one layer at a time, and as it builds up, it creates the 3-D object. It’s a huge field now, especially in manufacturing, because it’s beneficial for prototyping.” The expo aims to bring together community partners showcasing how they utilize 3-D printing. “We bring people in from all over the community,” Konshak said. “We

Dotted Line Divas expands By Renee Larr news@currentincarmel.com Dotted Line Divas, a nonprofit that uses extreme couponing to collect items for people in need, has moved into a larger space RELOCATION at Mercy Road Church Northwest, 9511 Angola Ct. in Indianapolis, after outgrowing its previous location. “Mercy Road is my home church,” said Christina Huffines, a Carmel resident and Dotted Line Divas founder and executive director. “They had a nice, big space they offered to us, so we thought it would be a good move. It’s in a more centralized location for the families that utilize us.” In fact, in the first month after the move, the group nearly doubled the number of families it serves to almost 100 a month. Families in need can visit the pantry from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month to pick up items most food pantries don’t offer.

Dotted Line Divas also teaches families how to use coupons to stretch funds. Although the growth is rewarding, Huffines isn’t content with only helping 100 families a month. She has plans for major expansion. “One day, I would love to open my own community center,” Huffines said. “It would have a food pantry, personal care pantry, a clothing pantry, a place for families to get haircuts.” For more, visit dottedlinedivas.org.

Wrestling Theology Congregant pins down faith with monthly matches at Carmel church By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The road to Wrestling Theology began with a Sunday morning drive. But first one has to COVER STORY understand its founder, Rich Abbott, appeared headed nowhere in late 2011. Abbott had just lost his job and then discovered his live-in girlfriend was dating his only friend in the Indianapolis area behind his back. “I was left without a job, my girlfriend or any friends,” said Abbott Abbott, who was then living on the northeast side of Indianapolis and now lives in Fishers. “The funny part is, she wouldn’t get out of my apartment because she was on the lease. One Sunday morning, I woke up and she was in my bed and I didn’t know why. I didn’t want to be there, so I got up and drove around. “I went into a church because I thought, what else is there to do on Sunday morning? I thought I could probably use some friends that aren’t going to do that to me.” Abbott ended up at East 91st Street Christian Church in Indianapolis. He listened to Pastor Daron Earlewine talk about real people with real problems.
Something clicked, and Abbott decided to give Christianity another try. That eventually led to creating Wrestling Theology, a ministry featuring pro wrestling shows at Mercy Road Church. The next show, Rise Up, is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 22 at the church, 2381 Pointe Pkwy., Carmel. The show is Wrestling Theology’s 26th. “We have a message at every show of faith, hope and love,” said Abbott, who grew up in Hanover. Abbott’s parents turned away from their Christian church when he was 8, and his older brother, who had cerebral palsy and other health issues, died at age 10. “We stopped going to church. I later found out the reason was because some of the people in the church said to my parents, had they believed harder, he would have been healed,” Abbott said. “That put me on a path of being very anti-Christian for a long time in my life.” Abbott said the Wrestling Theology idea came about when was in a discipleship huddle with Earlewine, who is known as the Pub Pastor and leader and founder of Pub Theology. Earlewine also is host of Radio Theology on WZPL. “I came to Christ through Pub Theology,” Abbott said. Abbott, 35, told Earlewine and the group how he had been to a pro wrestling convention and met all of the wrestlers.
13
“One of the guys in the huddle said, ‘I think you should talk about your passion for wrestling and newfound belief in Christ and combine those two,’” Abbott said. “It sounded like something to explore. I reached out to wrestling fans (to see if) they wanted to watch the next WWE pay-per-view together. We started doing these viewing parties and building a community with wrestling fans.” Abbott went from viewing parties to bringing in retired wrestlers to speak to presenting a wrestling show at the church. At first, Abbott had just gotten approval from Mercy Road to have another group host a wrestling show. “Right before, the company decided they weren’t ready to do it,” Abbott said. So, Abbott decided to organize it himself. The first show under the Wrestling Theology format was in April 2017. Abbott brought in WWE Hall of Famer Bushwhacker Luke, among others. Another show was held in November 2017. From there, Abbott decided there was enough interest to hold one every month, primarily featuring up-and-coming wrestlers.
SHOW TIME
The Wrestling Theology format consists of three or four matches, followed by a 5- to 10-minute talk before intermission, and then three or four more matches. “It is about how we can relate wrestling to a message of faith.” Abbott said. “We’re not here to preach what you hear on Sunday morning. We’re there to give people a taste of it. If they want to know more, we let them know church times and invite them out to other events.” Abbott said he doesn’t try to intertwine the message with the matches. “I’ve seen that before, and it comes off cheesy,” he said. “People who aren’t Christians can come out and enjoy the show and, hopefully, they’ll stick around and hear the message.” Mercy Road Church Lead Pastor Josh Husmann said Wrestling Theology has attracted people from the community who wouldn’t normally attend church services. Husmann acknowledged he initially thought putting on live wrestling shows was a bad idea. “We have a policy of regardless of whether I think it’s a bad idea or not, if it’s going to benefit our mission, we do it,” Husmann said. “I’m really glad we did, because it reached a lot of people we never would have reached. We’ve had some agnostics or atheists who have given their lives to Christ because of the ministry. For us, that’s a huge win.”

ESSAY
LETTER
Second chances
Right tone missing in hotel explanation
Commentary by Terry Anker Famed American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in a 1932 essay, “My Lost City,” that “I once thought that there were no second acts in American lives, but there was certainly to be a second act to New York’s boom days.” The line exposed the resilience of the great city following a period of poor decisions and adverse externalities. Fitzgerald’s novels, including the literary classic “The Great Gatsby,” often wrestled with the notion of redemption. Unlike Gatsby, New York would rise again. Recently, pundits have debated the entry of one-time political highflier Carl Brizzi into an already crowded local congressional primary battle (note, Brizzi, former Marion County prosecutor, is a reader and well-known to this columnist). To some, his peccadillos, while arguably unsubstantiated, have come to cause doubt in his prudence. Examination is warranted. Still, are we best defined by what we have been? Or better, should we be measured by what we have the potential to become? Divorced? Failed business? Less than stellar fourth-grade student? When, if ever, are we fully defined? When can we no longer expect the dawn to follow the night? In a world of ubiquitous social media spouting, do our failures become indelible stains on our lives? Or, are they simply the hardship that frames and molds us along the way? How are we judged as a human in full? The voters will decide if Brizzi gets a second act. But, who decides about us?

Most unwonderful time of the year
Commentary by Danielle Wilson
February ... am I right? As I was contemplating my weekly missive this morning, on the way to a HUMOR dance competition, mind you, it occurred to me that I’m not a huge fan of this month. Dreary weather, no sunshine, and the lamest holiday of the year, Valentine’s Day. Seriously, Valentine’s Day ranks about 74th on my list of celebratory dates, right between Mammogram Awareness and the Ides of March. If I want an excuse to eat sea salt caramel hearts, I’ll just pretend I’m having a low-sodium moment and be done. No excruciating card-buying experience necessary. Anyway, while these depressing thoughts are circulating, I glanced at my teenage daughter, who was simultaneously applying fake eyelashes and sneering. She was operating on 5 hours of sleep and no caffeine and was frustrated that I was making her wear a seat belt. The horror! I’m Mom-
mie Dearest, apparently. Her attitude did not improve my take on February. Naturally, then, I missed my exit, like I do every time I drive to this particular venue. You would think that after probably 18 trips during the last few years, I would know to head east on I-70 and not west. Even worse, Barb, my Google Maps voice, totally judged me afterward: “Recalculating route, you idiot!” Ugh. February — this is all your fault! Yes, you bring Black History Month and great college basketball and a three-day weekend for some, but you are simply too cold and dark and boring, even during a leap year. And you turn my children into brats and impair brain functioning. No, February, I am not a fan. Peace out.

Editor, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard issued a statement Feb. 10 about Hotel Carmichael’s price tag that told us taxpayers to basically suck it up. His statement was tone deaf, lacking contrition about letting a public/private project go $18 million over budget. He suggested we thank (Carmel Redevelopment Commission Director) Henry Mestestky and the CRC rather than criticize. He clarified that he is the one with oversight, not anyone else. As well, he noted that the CRC’s freedom comes from the state legislature’s setup of independent redevelopment commissions to help municipalities redevelop underused areas of their cities and towns. Using this as justification raises another question: How was the hotel’s prime real estate footprint considered “underused” in the first place? Mestestky and Brainard have shown they need oversight, and the city council and independent auditors should provide it. Catherine Hughes, Carmel

Hide and (continually) seek Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Last weekend, some friends called at the last minute to ask if they could drop by. Panic set in. HUMOR We had a lot of areas to straighten up. Of course, no matter how successful we were at making order out of the chaos, the first thing my wife would say when our friends arrived was the obligatory, “I’m so sorry the place is such a mess.” The clock was running. Guests were on the way. That’s when the old toaster was taken off the counter and stuffed in the kitchen pantry. The cat’s scratching post was rolled under a bed. The kitty litter was placed on the cellar steps. I even put the cat in the storage room because she snarls at strangers. The ugly basket with all the TV remotes that sat on the coffee table was hidden behind a chair. The guest bathroom was sufficiently clean, but there was a chance someone might want to use my bathroom (yes, I have my own bathroom; that’s why we have been happily married for 40 years). “Hide everything,” Mary Ellen said. “Your bathroom is a disgrace.” I grabbed all my medications off the counter, my electric toothbrush, the Norelco shaver, a gallon-size bottle of minty-blue mouthwash, two combs and three hairbrushes and hid them in the … well, I put them under the …
behind the …I had no clue where they were. I should have kept track. Our dining room table had become the depository for bills and assorted important papers. My wife has always been concerned about leaving material like this out in plain sight. She thinks it all should be secured in a place where no one can find it. Well, mission accomplished. When our friends left, it was time for us to find everything. And quick. I was sure the cat had to pee and was anxious to scratch her post. I wanted to watch TV and Mary Ellen wanted to pay some bills. We spent most of the next morning looking for stuff we had squirreled away. We didn’t find everything, but I did locate the huge pile of instruction manuals for all our new appliances in the back of the laundry closet. I hid those two years ago before our housewarming party. So, that’s where they’ve been? The next morning, I couldn’t brush my teeth, comb my hair or take my Lipitor. Fortunately, when I got in the shower, I found all the items from my countertop piled up in the back end of the tub. I know that eventually everything else will show up, too. Mary Ellen really misses the cat.

Another significant change that team captain Kelly Meyer, a Carmel resident, wants to share is that Walk T-shirts are no longer part of the registration fee. Survivors and thrivers will receive a shirt automatically, but other supporters will need to fundraise at least $100 to receive a shirt. Meyer started walking 26 years ago before she knew anyone affected by cancer. Her mother was diagnosed in 1996. Meyer leads the Faithful Friends team, which has grown from six to more than 120 members in some years. Her goal is to raise $10,000 individually and $12,000 as a team. Pre-registration is $30. Walk-up registration is $40. For more, visit komencentralindiana.org.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will look different this year, starting with MORE THAN PINK its name. Komen Central Indiana has rebranded its signature event to be called the MORE THAN PINK Walk. “We are very excited to take this next step,” said Mike Potter, Komen Central Indiana communications manager. “One of the main goals of the change is to help our incredible supporters see how their fundraising is changing and often saving lives right here in central Indiana, right now.” The 2020 MORE THAN PINK Walk is at 10 a.m. April 18 at Historic Military Park at White River State Park, 601 W. New York St. in Indianapolis. Participants can visit four tents that will showcase Komen Central Indiana’s work within its four pillars: Research, Care, Community and Action. “For example, in the Research tent, participants will get to use microscopes to see the difference between healthy and cancerous breast tissue,” Potter said.

Smith takes on physical role in CCP’s ‘Lend Me a Tenor’ By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Some might consider this to be Tom Smith’s fourth act. The Westfield resCOMEDY ident was an English teacher at several central Indiana school districts, followed by a 23-year career as an FBI agent in the Minneapolis, New York and Indianapolis field offices. After retiring in 2006, Smith served on the Westfield City Council. Smith, 70, then began acting four years ago and performs as much as possible. “I’m trying to catch up for lost time,” he said. Smith will be in his biggest role yet in Carmel Community Players’ production of “Lend Me a Tenor” Feb. 27 to March 8 at The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel. “This is a challenge for me, not only because there is a lot of lines but there is a lot of running around, and I’m not a young man,” Smith said. “It’s a physical show. It’s a lot of work to get ready for, but it’s going to be hilarious.” Smith plays Saunders, the manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Co., in the farce by Ken Ludwig. Smith said he had no reservations about taking the part. “(Director Susan Rardin) offered it to me and I jumped at it,” he said. “It’s the most energetic farce I’ve ever been in. I love the cast.” Smith said he auditions for roles he believes he has a shot at getting. “I’m a little old for the part but it fit me pretty well,” he said. Smith said his daughter, Jessica, from Chicago, and son, Tom, an Indianapolis police officer, will attend the show because he has a large part.

Carmel resident J.D. Walls plays Tito, or Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation. “I’ve been in Ken Ludwig’s ‘Moon Over Buffalo’ at Civic Theatre,” Walls said. “I’ve always wanted to do this show, so when I saw they were doing it, I was first in line to audition.” The production is Walls’ first with CCP. He planned to audition for Saunders, but Rardin wanted him to audition for Tito. “It’s a great part and a lot of fun,” Walls said. “It’s a farce, so there is a lot of physical comedy and a lot of timing. It’s outrageousness and misdirection.” Walls said he had never worked with Rardin or any of the cast before, but everyone has been fantastic. “I think this will be a big crowd-pleaser as far as a show,” he said. Caity Withers, who lives in Speedway, plays the female lead of Maggie.
“Every single character gets to do something fun and funny,” Withers said. “Maggie is fun because she is hopeful and earnest, but she is definitely someone used to getting her way. If she doesn’t get her way, she will go to great lengths to make sure she does get her way.” Withers, from Anderson, did theater when she was younger and then picked it back up a few years ago. “I saw this show a few years ago and thought it was hilarious, so when I saw the audition notice, I knew I wanted to try out,” she said. Tyler Marx, Anderson, is performing in his second CCP production. He played in “The Failure to Zig-Zag,” which Rardin directed in the summer of 2019 “This is my first farce, but I like it so far,” said Marx, who plays Max. “It’s high energy and a lot of fun. The challenge is having all your actions synched up with the other actors.”

Address: 28153 West Ditch Rd., Sheridan What to get: The Screaming Goat pizza Price: $9 Anna’s take: My first trip to Blackhawk Winery was definitely enjoyable. It offers great pizza options to pair with its wines. Typically, pizzas can be ordered with cheese, pepperoni, sausage, olive, onion or mushrooms, but there also are specialty pizzas, depending on the season. I sampled a pepperoni, olive and onion pizza, a sausage and mushroom pizza, a straw-

berry balsamic specialty pizza with mozzarella, strawberry slices, bacon, onion and balsamic, and a goat cheese pizza called The Screaming Goat, with fig preserves, goat cheese crumbles, bacon and onion. All pizzas are $9 for a whole or $4.50 for a half. The flatbread is not greasy and can withstand the weight of the toppings and is of a thinbut-soft consistency. Suggested pairings: For the best option, ask your server which wine to pair with which pizza, as options change depending on which toppings are added. However, give the Sheridan wine a try. It is named after the grape varietal, not after the Town of Sheridan. The Sheridan grape is a sweeter grape, similar to a Concord grape, and creates a dark rose color in the wine.

Plan outdoor projects — now! Commentary by Randy Sorrell and Bill Bernard I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for spring! Those two recent days when the REMODELING temperature reached the 60s was enough to make me start thinking about spending time outdoors. Old Man Winter may still be putting a chill in the air, but it’s time to start planning. What outdoor projects are on your list this year? A new patio, a grill station, a fire feature, a pergola, a lanai, updated landscaping and a water feature are just a few of the elements that come to mind when we think about extending our living space outdoors. The time is now. Just do it. Schedule the pool party. Schedule the team barbeque. Put them on the calendar. You know you want to. Put your thoughts on something other than the elections. Make time for family and friends. Now is the time to begin

planning. It will take time to gather ideas, consider options, construct and ultimately start enjoying the fruits of your planning. Turn your “to-do” list into a “been-done” list. Stop by our office and let us show off our new grill station. It has a custom concrete countertop with embedded fiber-optic lighting. You also can see our new line of planters that are available in an incredible palette of
colors. A small pop of color can work wonders! Let’s start planning. Stay home, be moved. Randy Sorrell is president of SURROUNDINGS by NatureWorks+, a Carmel homeimprovement firm. He may be reached at 317-679-2565, randy@ choosesurroundings.com or choosesurroundings.com.

History of the once-incomparable palace Commentary by Don Knebel Just south of the famous central square in Marrakech, Morocco, are the ruins of El Badi, perhaps TRAVEL once the world’s most spectacular palace. In 1578, Ahmad al-Mansur, a member of the Saadi dynasty that had ruled Morocco since 1549, became ruler after his brother, the sultan, died in a victorious battle against the Portuguese, who had sought to bring Christianity to Morocco. The Portuguese were forced to pay enormous sums to al-Mansur to ransom their many important prisoners taken in what became known as the Battle of the Three Kings. Al-Mansur used the money to begin building a magnificent palace in Marrakech, his capital. The palace became

known in Arabic as El Badi, “The Incomparable.” The El Badi palace, which took 25 years to complete, lived up to its name. Modeled on the Alhambra in Granada, the palace contained 360 rooms, a massive courtyard and a reflecting pool 300 feet by 60 feet. It
included stables for the sultan’s horses and dungeons for his prisoners. The palace was adorned with marble from Italy, gold from Sudan and jade from China. Al-Mansur used the palace to host lavish receptions for ambassadors from Spain, England and the Ottoman
Empire, displaying Moroccan power. When al-Mansur died in 1603, the Saadi dynasty began a period of decline and lost power entirely to the Alaouites in 1649. Moulay Ismail ibn Sharif, an Alaouite sultan who began his reign in 1672, moved the Moroccan capital from Marrakech to Meknes and spent 10 years destroying the El Badi palace, both to use its materials in his own palace and to destroy vestiges of the Saadis. Today, only remnants of El Badi remain, but it is an important destination for visitors to Marrakech, who can imagine the scale and grandeur of the once-incomparable palace. Time to get over it Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt We have at least a handful of grammar rules that mostly reflect antiquated guidelines written by a long-dead GRAMMAR GUY person. One contentious rule that has changed (or at least delved into at least a dozen shades of gray) in the past decade is the usage of “more than” and “over.” I contend that the argument between “more than” and “over” isn’t a clash of rules, but merely a difference in styles. According to the old “rule,” use “more than” when you’re talking about numbers: “I watched more than 15 episodes of ‘The Good Place’ in one sitting.” By the same “rule,” the following sentence would be considered incorrect: “I watched over 15 episodes of ‘The Good Place’ in one sitting.” Even if you adhere to this long-standing guideline of grammar style, do you know why? LIFESTYLE Cullen Bryant, a 19th-century poet and the editor of the New York Evening Post, declared that this usage was his preferred style. Based on his editorial clout, other style and usage guides followed suit, including the AP Stylebook — until 2014. When the good people who decide on the style guidelines for the AP Stylebook abandoned this rule, editors started an electronic Twitter riot with their outrage. This style change reflected an already popular usage in culture. While I’m sure editors across the U.S. still twitch when they see “over” and “more than” used interchangeably, I appreciate the relaxing of this rule, which was basically someone’s glorified preference from over 100 years ago.
