Mayor approached Center about paying for private investigator

Mayor Jim Brainard asked the Center for the Performing Arts to pay for the private investigator that tailed its former president and CEO. Interim President and CEO Frank Basile acknowledged last week Brainard approached the Center to inBrainard quire about its willingness to pay for the invoice. Basile said the Center declined, and payments to International Investigators totaling approximately $8,000 eventually became public knowledge when added Basile to the city council’s claims run. Those claims are still pending.

“I am not going to talk about this, period,” Brainard said.

The topic arose last Monday night after Basile gave a presentation to the council to provide updates on the Center’s current season and comments on its recently released audit and internal review. Afterward, councilors had follow-up questions for Basile, and Councilman Eric Seidensticker asked about the International Investigators tab. “… Was the foundation, you or any of your Seidensticker members, were they ever approached and asked to pay for the International Investigators invoice?” Seidensticker said.

Basile answered, “Yes,” and when asked to identify the person who approached the Center, Basile said, “We were asked by the mayor to participate.”

Basile again confirmed to Current the Center did not partici-

pate, but did not comment further.

Steven B. Libman, the Center’s former president and CEO, resigned July 29, citing personal reasons. An investigation by International Investigators conducted prior to his resignation detailed an alleged relationship between Libman and one of his subordinates.

Council President Rick Sharp said he had for one month heard rumors of this conversation between Brainard and the Center.

“I was happy the foundation rejected the offer,” Sharp said. “I think it would have been inappropriate.”

Sharp He speculated on Brainard’s reasons for approaching the Center.

“It is merely speculation, because I have not discussed this with the mayor, but I would suspect there’s the desire to have no further public discussion on this matter and the decisions that precipitated it, and whether this is truly a proper expenditure of city funds,” he said.

The International Investigators claim has not been approved by the council, and while Sharp said he is ready to approve the claim, he said he first would like to have certain questions answered by the city’s attorney, Douglas Haney. Sharp said Haney had originally agreed to brief the council on the results of the investigation, but that has yet to happen, he said.

Sharp said he resubmitted his request last week and said that, if such a presentation is made, he expects it to be during a public meeting.

Carmel teen named state winner – Ray Qian, a senior at Carmel High School, and Marissa Stephens, a senior at North Central High School, recently were named the Indiana state winners of the 2011 Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement, a signature program of the Siemens Foundation administered by the College Qlan Board. The awards recognize America’s top achievers in Advanced Placement Program science and mathematics courses with a $2,000 college scholarship to one male and one female student in each state.

Two national winners are also recognized, each receiving a $5,000 scholarship. This year, 101 high school students in 50 states – including 96 seniors, four juniors and one sophomore – were recognized.

Carl Brizzi talks Charlie White verdict, next steps

A guilty verdict on six of seven felony counts against Charlie White has left the office of the Indiana Secretary of State in flux, and many speculating as to what twists may yet come in an already long, convoluted case.

In the wake of the verdict, Current spoke with White’s White criminal defense attorney, Carl Brizzi, to get his reaction and find out what comes next.

Is there a next step at this point? Where do you, does Charlie, go from here?

Brizzi: “What’s next is … we’ve got a sentencing hearBrizzi ing coming up in a couple of weeks (Feb. 23). The verdict is the verdict, and so now we’ve got to mitigate the consequences of the verdict.

We’re definitely going to appeal. We think there were very appealable issues in this trial, so I don’t think it’s speculation to be saying he’s pursuing an appeal.”

People still seem to be throwing around the possibility Charlie could be reinstated if all six felony counts were reduced to misdemeanors. Is that something you’re even aiming for at this point, or have you shifted into damage control mode?

Brizzi: “We’re definitely in damage control mode. Whether he’s reinstated as secretary of state is not something I’m focused on. He has other attorneys focused on the civil aspect of this.

What people have to bear in mind is, he was literally charged with four different felonies for casting one vote. I’m not really sure if that’s been reported. I mean … four felonies for one vote seems a bit extreme.”

You made the decision not to offer a defense at the trial, saying the prosecution didn’t have enough evidence to prove there was a crime committed. Do you still feel that was the right move?

Brizzi: “What do you want me to do? You can’t go back and second-guess any of the decisions made during the trial. No one except for me, Charlie and the people closest to him know what that evidence is and the potential for it to not be favorable. I lived this case for months and months and months and months, and we made the decisions we made. We’re never going to be able to explain to anyone with any satisfaction why those decisions were made.”

THE FACTS At 2:30 a.m. Feb. 5, a Hamilton County jury returned its verdict: guilty on three counts of voter fraud, two counts of perjury and one count of theft. White was acquitted on a charge of fraud against a financial institution.

He could face six months to three years in prison for each count.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels moved quickly to appoint an interim replacement for White, selecting Jerry Bonnet, chief deputy for the Secretary of State.

“This is an exceptionally busy time in the Secretary of State’s office as signatures for president, U.S. senate and governor are being certified this month,” Daniels said in a press release. “Jerry, a Yorktown native, has agreed to serve until I either select someone else to serve the remainder of the term, or until the prior occupant is reinstated.”

White is expected to appeal for the charges, all class-D felonies, to be reduced to misdemeanors.

“I have chosen not to make a permanent appointment today out of respect for the judge’s authority to lessen the verdict to a misdemeanor and reinstate the elected office holder,” Daniels said. “If the felony convictions are not altered, I anticipate making a permanent appointment quickly.”

Daniels added, “Jerry Bonnet is a longtime employee who absolutely knows what should be done to provide the effective supervision and oversight the office requires.”

Did the verdict come as a surprise?

Brizzi: “I don’t even know how to answer that. I’m not here to take issue with what the jury did, because each of us has a role in the criminal justice system. To put it in context, and certainly to put it in context of moving forward and how this affects a fellow Hoosier’s life who has a family and children to provide for, I think that needs to be taken into account.”

Charlie could face up to 18 years for a maximum sentence. Do you expect him to see any jail time?

Brizzi: “Can he potentially face jail time? Yes, absolutely. Do I expect it? I don’t expect or not expect anything at this point. I certainly don’t take anything for granted.”

Pulte Homes last week finalized the purchase of land for the development of 31 custom lots in west Carmel. The company expects the grand opening of the Woods at Lion’s Creek to occur in March.

CHS state championship team to reunite this week

Hope waned for Carmel High School’s basketball team on a cold February evening in 1977.

The team was crushed that night by Ben Davis High School in its last game of the regular season.

Many of the players had been teammates since seventh grade, and it was commonly expected the team had the talent to win a state championship by the time the players graduated.

On this night, however, the team’s seniors had little reason to be optimistic. But then they rallied, and that rally led them all the way to the state championship game, during which CHS won it all on a last-second shot by Jon Ogle.

To commemorate the 35th anniversary of that championship, the team will reunite on Friday at 5:30 p.m. for a community dinner at CHS. Tickets are $20. For more information or to reserve a seat, visit www.carmel77champions.com.

Editorial It’s a lot more than a facelift

XL pipeline It is our position the Obama Administration’s recent decision to defer approval of the XL pipeline project was a political decision adverse to our country’s best interests.

The pipeline was intended to carry Canadian shale oil to refiners in the U.S., but was derailed by nebulous environmental concerns.

In a broader sense, though, the real misfortune from the decision was a missed opportunity to develop a reliable supply of energy from a friendly source. True, the price of oil is generally determined in a global marketplace, but a dedicated pipeline from our Northern neighbor would provide some insulation from disruptions that could devastate our economy.

Much of the world’s oil resides in countries antagonistic to the U.S., or in regions where safe transport can be disrupted. Unstable regimes in the Middle East and Venezuela, and to some extent in Russia, leave the West vulnerable to targeted embargoes or general shortages that become a national security concern. Having a direct pipeline from America’s closest neighbor means some of our basic needs would be met, even during times of geopolitical turmoil.

Organizers for the now-in-the-books Super Bowl XLVI (that’s No. 46 for those of us who have not kept up with our Roman numerals) are to be heartily congratulated for what seems regarded nationally as a standout. During these past two weeks, I’ve read with some attention the media perspective on central Indiana. Admittedly, when Allison Melangton, President and CEO of the Indianapolis Host Committee started encouraging folks to knit scarves for volunteers, recruiting school kids to write welcome notes to put in visitor’s hotel rooms and branding all manner and sort of thing “super” – “Have a Super Day” – “Participate in Super Cure” – and even go to the “Super Care Clinic” if injured or unwell – it occurred all this hospitality might serve to reinforce bigoted views of middle Americans as rube residents of Hooterville.

And, yes, scores of coastal commentators begin their review of this year’s big game with remarks akin to, “It’s hard to believe Indy has

pulled it off.” Why is it hard to believe? Can’t they simply remark this was one of the best Super Bowls in years, without the ad homonym? Yet the very good manners I feared might expose to ridicule have been repeatedly mentioned with high praise. The homemade scarves are desired as a symbol of the warm welcome offered. The children’s notes have been pointed to in virtually every mass medium as a highlight of the visitor experience. How can folks be so stunned by common courtesy? Still as a routine writer of old-school thank you notes, I sometimes get cards from recipients thanking me for thanking them. Have we become so rude a simple handwritten message is coveted? Whatever the reason, I’m happy to see politeness getting kudos. In fact, I say to those behind the effort, have a super day.

I’m used to being teased by my in-laws. My geriatric tendencies toward early dinnertimes, my defining red hair and the fact I’m the lone liberal in all of Indianapolis suburbia offers plenty of fodder for their mocking trough, and I’m usually happy to oblige. But I had to lay down the law the other night after being subjected to intense criticism regarding my choice of steak preparedness.

I had just agreed to split the tantalizing South African lobster and filet mignon combo with a sister-in-law, when I suggested we order the meat medium-well. She scowled at me and replied, “Medium-well? Are you crazy? That’s ridiculous.”

Disappointed and without any other mealsharers, I ordered an individual 8-ounce filet, medium-well. The appalled server had to ask, “But with a hot-pink center?” She asked twice for clarification, certain she misheard me. Of course this brief exchange garnered a whole herd of comments from those sitting near me, all along the lines of, “Geez, Danielle, why don’t you just ask for shoe leather?” Calloused to such beef-inspired hostility, I ignored their remarks and anxiously awaited my dinner.

A short while later, a perfect-looking steak arrived. When I cut into it, however, the center

was extremely red. So I did what any unsatisfied customer would do and sent it back, amidst cries of outrage and perhaps embarrassment from the table. I even overheard Doo’s dad mumble, “If she was going to order it like that, she should have ordered chicken.” I naturally called him out: “Randy, I’m going to enjoy my steak just as much as you’ll enjoy yours, so let me order it how I want!” The “damn it” was implied.

My meat returned, and once again, it was too raw for my liking. Begging the server not to spit on it or allow the cook to brand it with a swastika, I sent it back once more. Finally, on the third presentation, I received a steak prepared to my liking.

Was my behavior obnoxious? I don’t think so.

I’ve tried to eat rare meat and simply can’t do it without dry heaving. And when I dine out, I expect to get exactly what I order, especially if it’s expensive. I know my in-laws appreciate this on some level (subconscious though it may be), even if they can’t really understand it. Their teasing material was getting old anyway; it was time to beef it up. Mary Ellen has signed up for another year of Prevention magazine. This pocket-sized monthly tells you how to prevent most everything except how to stop your wife from wasting another $24.95. The cover of the most recent issue caught my eye, claiming you can drop three pounds a week without exercise. I assumed I’d soon discover that to lose this weight required only giving up three little things – like breakfast, lunch and dinner. But no, it was actually 100 methods to increase what they call your “calorie burn,” or activities that help you shed some excess baggage. My own svelte physique is a result of my previous adherence to some of these suggestions, even without being aware of what I was doing. For example, No. 23 recommends you hide your remote so you have to stand up to change TV channels. Well, duh! I’ve been pawing through pillows, dead-lifting the sofa and shoving the easy chair on its side for decades looking for the darn thing. No. 73 urges you to get your Starbucks coffee “to go,” then walk briskly with your friends as you sip. Yes, and then you can walk another six blocks to the dry cleaner’s.

healthy lifestyle. Apartment dwellers should get acquainted with a person on another floor and then, using the stairs, of course, visit as often as possible. I tried this back when I first got married. Mary Ellen didn’t like the idea and neither did Collette’s boyfriend.

Here’s a great one: Instead of sitting in that regular chair in front of your computer, buy one of those giant stability exercise balls to balance on while you work. Shouldn’t you be chasing the ball? Who’s the chubby one, anyway?

Lots of hubbub lately about school lunches. It has something to do with making them healthier. Either that, or “hubbub” is the new name for mystery meat covered with weird brown gravy.

No, seriously (which is difficult for me, so hang on) the government has announced new guidelines for the calorie and sodium contents of school lunches. I think it’s great, and I say this as one whose struggles with weight began back in elementary school and continue to this day.

Of course, new guidelines will mean the end of many of the so-called staples of the modern school lunch room – pizza, fries and the like – in favor of healthy alternatives.

This takes me back to the school lunches of my kidhood. By that I mean, PIZZA? FRIES? Where were these things when I was going to school? Back then, lunchtime was something you dreaded. Really. In some of my schools, kids actually tried to get out of lunch period in favor of extra algebra classes.

The dish that characterized school lunches back then was a baked noodle-and-tomato glop, called Johnny Marzetti (or Mazetti, depending on where you went to school). It was supposedly named for a man who owned a restaurant in Ohio, although one of the big kids told me it was REALLY for a guy who murdered his en-

tire family with rat poison and a No. 10 can of Franco-American spaghetti.

Next was chop suey, the school kitchen’s salty, lumpy take on Chinese food, which we instantly renamed Chopped Sewage. Having gone on to enjoy true Chinese cuisine, I shudder to think how accurate we were.

This brings up the school lunch hamburger, which was known to bring itself up about two hours after you ate it.

I know what you’re thinking. I could have solved a lot of problems by carrying a lunchbox.

I did for a while, until my mother, faced with three kids with three wildly differing preferences, made her famous “I’m Not Running a Diner” speech in 1966, leaving me to fend for myself, lunchbox-wise. And a fellow can eat only so many peanut butter sandwiches.

Ah, but that’s all in the past. Now we’re in the era of the healthy lunch, and I just can’t help but think what would have happened had they tried this when I was in school. Whole wheat pasta? Baked sweet potato fries? We would have thought they were trying to kill us.

Then again, we always did.

Chamber seeking more input from businesses

The Carmel Chamber is ready to get involved in local issues that will have an effect on the business community.

But first, it needs help in identifying the issues in which its members are most interested.

The Chamber provided a look back at 2011 and a look ahead to 2012 during its monthly luncheon last week at The Fountains. During the presentation, members of the Chamber’s staff and board recalled the Chamber’s involvement in 2011 issues that could potentially affect the business community. Examples included its support of the planned Bridges development, its ongoing efforts to maintain a dialog between the city and business owner near 96th Street and Keystone Parkway and its support of the citywide trash ordinance, which went into effect Jan. 1.

“At first we thought that was just a residential issue, until we realized residents who don’t have this service at home often dispose of their trash in commercial dumpsters,” said Susan Ziel, Chamber board chair. “That’s not only illegal, but a costly annoyance for businesses.”

Chamber President Mo Merhoff said the Chamber is willing to get involved in 2012’s biggest issues if they will have an impact on local businesses, and she invited members of the city’s business community to approach the Chamber with their questions and concerns.

Ziel said members will be updated on the Chamber’s efforts on these fronts via the organization’s electronic newsletter, which is new this year.

“It will keep you up to date on issues that could affect you and your business,” she said. “We want to track upcoming issues.”

The whole world has changed, and now conversations and ideas from the past don’t have the same meaning as before. It’s also a perfect storm for misunderstanding how advanced technology has actually gotten. Below are three examples that reinforce everyone’s need to stay in touch, or look out of touch: Hey, I’m on long distance. I called a guy on his cell phone.

He answered and quickly replied, “Can I call you back? I’m on a long-distance call.” Long distance, really? Hello 1975, I missed you. It doesn’t matter anymore if you are calling downstairs, downtown or Detroit. You’re paying for all your calls.

I’ll buy both. I was in a meeting discussing a URL to buy. A URL is simply the Web address so you can find the content or files when you type the URL in your Web browser. The URL directs you to files hosted somewhere, and it shows you the Web site files, which is the Web site to you and I. During this discussion, we were deliberating on what address to buy. After deciding the address, this fellow in the meeting looked at me all serious and said, “Now, do we want to buy the address with the www in front of it, or not?” Before I could answer, he responded quickly, “Let’s

just buy them both.” Done, thank you. That’ll be $100.

Sir, we have wireless. At a restaurant, I entered with my laptop under my left arm and my computer’s power cord in my right hand. I asked the server if I could sit next to a receptacle, since my computer needed to be charged. She smiled and told me, “You can sit anywhere. We have wireless.” Wireless electricity, really? I hadn’t heard of it. I still haven’t.

Dial it up. I hear this all the time, someone offers a Web site address and says, “Dial it up.” Okay, let me find my rotary keyboard and get that moving. Now, where’d I leave my dial-up modem? Oh yeah, in the trash.

It’s easy to fall behind. It’s easy to not know and misspeak.

Here’s a great habit to pick up: start reading a technology blog.

You’ll stay in better touch with changes, and you might just find out you’re the smart kid at parties.

Premium economy seats – More airlines are offering an increasingly popular mid-tier class, called premium economy. Among international carriers, premium economy can include larger seats, upgraded food service over coach and privileges such as dedicated check-in lines, priority security screening, early boarding and expedited baggage handling. Home sales up in county – A one- and three-month review of local housing data reveals an increase in the number of closed sales in Hamilton County, according to a report from the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors. During October to December, the number of closed sales in Hamilton County increased by 6.4 percent when compared to the same months in 2010.

Closed sales increased 2 percent in the Decemberonly comparison within Hamilton County. Median sales prices in the county decreased to $190,000 during October to December, a 3.8 percent decrease. During the one-month period of December, median sales prices decreased 9.8 percent to $172,700. The average sales price of homes in Hamilton County increased 7.2 percent to $259,168 when compared to the same three-month period in 2010, but decreased 2.7 percent in the one-month comparison to $226,180.

Junk bonds paying handsomely – Based on risk premiums and expected default rates, high-yield bonds and leveraged loans are almost lavishly compensating investors for their respective default risks, according to Babson Capital Management. The high-yield bond default rate is approximately 1.8 percent, while the rate for leveraged loans is near a historical low at .4 percent. The average highyield bond risk premium over Treasuries since 2000 has been 616 basis points, and net default losses have averaged 230 basis points during that time, providing an average default-adjusted spread of 386 basis points. If we assume this is the average excess spread, the market is implying a default rate of nearly 5 percent.

Question from Robby H. of West Clay: My insurance agent is always trying to sell me an umbrella policy. Is this something I should consider adding? It just seems like an extra cost.

Response from Ryan Samuelson: It sounds like you have a good agent. I always encourage my clients to at least consider adding the extra layer of liability protection an umbrella/catastrophe policy will add. An umbrella policy is really all about having the peace of mind in knowing your family and assets are protected.

There are many ways to end up with an umbrella claim, but the most common umbrella claim is an auto accident involving multiple injuries and very costly medical bills. The other common claim is an incident on your property that results in injury.

This is definitely a topic you should discuss with your independent insurance agent to make sure you are protected by a level of coverage you are comfortable with. Most people should be pretty comfortable with a coverage limit of $1 million, but limits more than $10 million are available if you are looking for higher limits.

There are some things that make a claim more likely, such as having a pool, living on a lake, having a young driver and owning a boat/

ATV/snow mobile (basically anything fun).

Instead of talking about prevention this week, I want to show a couple of claim scenarios to illustrate how an umbrella policy will work.

Scenario one: The insured’s son was driving his car on a short road trip with a friend, the claimant. The car drifted off the road and into a phone pole when the son fell asleep at the wheel. The passenger was hospitalized for more than a month with broken bones and internal injuries. The hospitalization was followed by some time in a wheelchair, but he was able to walk again after six months of physical therapy.

This claim cost $800,000, with $300,000 coming from the auto limits and $500,000 coming from the umbrella limits.

Scenario two: The insured is having a summer barbeque and one of the guests step off the edge of a retaining wall, resulting in a spinal cord injury. He required multiple surgeries, an extended hospital stay and physical therapy. This claim cost $1.8 million, with $1 million coming from the homeowners limits and $800,000 coming from the umbrella limits.

It seems no matter where we look, people are sick, tired and out of shape. Our busy lifestyles keep us running at the speed of light, and taking time for ourselves just doesn’t seem possible.

Constantly, we are tempted with fast-food billboards and radio ads luring us into compromising our diets. The busyness of the day seems to keep us up at night, making everything even worse due to lack of sleep. So what do we do?

How do we keep ourselves in the shape of our lives and still manage the busyness? The answer lies in putting your boxing gloves on against your lifestyle. Let’s face it, we are all busy and put off things we have intentions of doing.

Sometimes, we have to fight our schedules and agendas and take a step back to organize our life in a manner that can still promote a healthy lifestyle. If it was a perfect world, we would all get up and stretch, do yoga, eat breakfast then head out to work. After work, we would go to the gym, work out for an hour and drive home to have a warm, home-cooked meal full of veggies and leafy greens. When busy, I recommend clients to still take personal time. For instance, if you struggle keeping commitments to working out, hire a trainer or find a workout partner. If you’re stressed, but have no time to do yoga, listen to a meditation or nature CD on the way to or from work. Occasionally, treat yourself to a massage when feeling the stress of a deadline, or the kids are getting on your nerves. If time is an issue for eating healthy, pick a day you plan out some quick, 10-minute meals for those weeks when a sit-down meal just isn’t going to happen. Let’s face it, without our health, nothing else matters quite as much. For the next month, commit yourself to a minimum of once per week doing something healthy for yourself. After a few weeks, try stepping it up a notch or two. During the course of a year, you will find you are feeling better and able to do more for yourself than you could ever imagine.

Most docs tell white lies – Trust your doctor? A survey finds some doctors aren't always completely honest with their patients. More than half admitted describing someone's prognosis in a way they knew was too rosy. Nearly 20 percent said they hadn't fully disclosed a medical mistake for fear of being sued. Refs, umps, grout: Unnoticed unless …

I can’t think of a single time one of our custom home-improvement customers looked at a finished tiling job – whether floor or wall, kitchen or bath – and their first comment was, “Wow, that’s outstanding grout!”

No, they notice the tile’s material, texture, color and pattern. They experience the positive energy of the tile’s visual, functional and design elements. They bask in the freshness of a new look and feel in an area of their home. They say, “Wow!” Grout, while critical to the appearance and function of a good tiling job, usually isn’t part of that initial “Wow!” equation. In fact, grout can be compared with basketball referees or baseball umpires: They are generally only noticed when they aren’t perfect.

Early last summer, we redesigned and rebuilt a walk-in, tiled master bath shower in a very nice northside Indianapolis home. The finished shower (grout, too) looked great, was completed on time and on budget and the customers wrote a nice letter to Angie’s List … kudos to all.

Then in December, the homeowners noticed the grout in their newly-tiled shower floor was disappearing in spots … big spots. They called us, we immediately traced both the materials

used and who did the installation, reviewed all the information we had and realized this specific batch of commercially-manufactured grout had, for reasons we still don’t know and probably never will, failed.

So, we completely removed and reinstalled the grout. The homeowners noted their appreciation we didn’t just put new grout on top of the old, or try to blame the grout and claim our innocence, or bill them for the do-over.

What I like about the story is these homeowners knew who they were working with, knew who to contact with questions or problems, and when the need arose, were professionally responded to with a responsible solution.

That was a good call.

Macro The predominant macro trend continues to be the growth of outdoor rooms. Although that formality will likely grow, it’s the various components of outdoor rooms most are able to enjoy.

We’ve discovered there’s more to life than Facebook, iPads and “Dancing with the Stars.” We’ve rediscovered life outdoors, and that a little respite in the backyard with the occasional neighbor stopping by can be good for the soul, and genuinely improve our performance in other areas of life.

So, expect to read/hear/see/do more about romantic pergolas, authentic stone patios, fire features of all sorts and the most critical element of outdoor enjoyment … year-round performing landscapes.

The “right plant in the right place” is finally commanding the respect deserved. Local legend Bob Altum was best at this. I recall an encounter years ago when he was performing a little maintenance at a decades-old project, and it looked historically relevant because he planned for the long-term. Let’s follow his lead.

Other emerging micros: do it once and do it right, water conservation efforts, rescue/reuse/ repurpose real stone, don’t fight the sight, grill and chill (my personal favorite) and going green. Let’s explore those soon.

Help for the stair-impaired Canines by John Mikesell

Here are five things to do when your dog won’t go up or down stairs: Get a veterinary/chiropractic checkup. If your dog is hurting or otherwise physically challenged, it may be too painful or difficult for it to travel stairs. A chiropractic adjustment and/or pain medication may have it scampering up and down in no time.

Carry your dog. Some small dogs (like Pomeranians or yorkies) just aren’t big enough to handle a full flight of stairs. If you have a small dog that does not like to be carried, you can teach it to jump into a carrier, and tote the carrier up and down the stairs.

Provide an alternative. In some cases, a ramp can be added to the stairs. This is also an option for aging dogs that might have difficulty with stairs. If your geriatric dog is having trouble and a ramp is not an option, you can use a towel as a sling under its abdomen to assist its back end up the stairs.

Shape it. Start at one end of the stairway, top or bottom, wherever it’s more comfortable, and click (or use

a verbal marker) and give the dog a treat for any small movement toward the stairs. No coaxing or luring; just let it make all the decisions and moves. In time, your dog will be willing to do the entire flight.

Back chain it. This is another solution for tiny to medium dogs, not practical for large dogs, but it can work like a charm with smaller ones. Carry your dog up the stairs and set it down one step from the top. It sees safety just one step up and makes the attempt – one step is manageable for it, even if it’s afraid of stairs – and goes for the top. It made it! Feed it yummy treats, too, as added reinforcement for its superb effort. Repeat that process just one step at a time until it does that happily and easily, then add steps.

By the way, February is Canine Dental Health Month.

Be sure to check with your local pet food supplier for all of the dental care products you need for your pet. Anything you can do to prevent gum disease is good for your dog or cat. Is your personal computer safe enough to do your taxes?

What should I do to make sure my computer is safe to do my taxes?

- Todd Tax season brings out the scams, fake e-mails and malware because thieves and hackers know it’s becoming more common to prepare taxes via your home computer.

Making sure your computer’s security software and operating system are up-to-date is hugely important this time of year.

So, before you jump into doing your taxes on your computer, take a few minutes and do some spot checks for signs of silent intruders.

A common sign of malicious programs is a computer that takes an extraordinarily long time to start up. You can certainly have this problem and not be infected, but if you have this problem, you should do some snooping around.

Windows users should check the Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del) to see how many processes are running on the computer (look in the bottom left corner). Make sure you do this spot check right after restarting the computer so nothing is running yet.

When we perform our overhaul cleanup service, we strive to get the running processes on Windows XP systems in the 30-40 range (laptops tend to require more processes) and Windows 7 and Vista systems in the 35-45 range.

If you have 60, 70 or more than 80 processes running, you want to make sure none of those excess processes are hidden malware programs.

While you have the Task Manager open, click on the performance tab and check to see what the CPU usage and history look like. On a clean machine, your system should be idling, which means the CPU usage should be very low and

If your CPU usage is jumping up and down or running at a much higher number, and the history graph shows wild swings up and down, something is running in the background of the computer and should be identified.

Even if you aren’t infected with malware, getting these indicators back to normal levels will rejuvenate your computer and make everything run faster and smoother for everything you do, not just your tax return.

Many file sharing programs automatically share certain folders on the hard drive with the rest of the file-sharing universe, so make sure you check your installed programs to see if any strange programs have been installed before you get started.

FaceTime affects social skills? – FaceTime, the Apple video-chat application, is not a replacement for real human interaction, especially for children, according to a new study. Girls between the ages of 8 and 12 who spend much of their waking hours switching frantically between YouTube, Facebook, TV and text messaging are more likely to develop social problems, says a new Stanford University study. Young girls who spend the most time multitasking between various digital devices, communicating online or watching video are the least likely to develop normal social tendencies, according to the survey of 3,461 American girls aged 8 to 12 who volunteered responses. The study only included girls who responded to a survey in Discovery Girls magazine, but results should apply to boys, too, researchers said.

My friends John and Joyce (Estes) Samples have been married 61 years.

Not bad, but this is amazing: Joyce and her six still-living Estes siblings – two brothers and four sisters – have all been married for more than 50 years.

That’s right, seven brothers and sisters from the same family have each celebrated golden wedding anniversaries. Youngest sister Sue’s 50th in February 2008 was the seventh, and inspired national news coverage. The Estes siblings and current years of marriage are Agnes 65, Doug 64, Charles 61, Joyce 61, Eula 58, Sue 53 and Gladys 52. They were born in Kentucky, but grew up near Richmond, Ind. Joyce and husband John, a minister, live in Fishers.

Thirteen of the 14 golden celebrants are still alive and kicking today (Gladys’ husband died in 1999). Another brother, Joe, died in 1992 after 48 years of marriage to Ruth, a marriage delayed three years by World War II. So that’s another 50-year-plus commitment. A ninth sibling sister died when she was less than 2 years old. As you might expect, their parents, C.M. and Minnie Estes, marked a long marriage – 59 years – before C.M. passed in1975. Minnie died in 1997 at age 99. Add it all up and that’s 521 years of marriage for these Christian, church-going, prayerful kinfolk who provide a Valentine’s

Day reminder that love can indeed endure.

But rather than making this about Christian marriage or a secular holiday (the “Feast of St. Valentine” has been dropped from the official Roman Catholic calendar), let’s talk about love, endurance and prayer in broader terms. Most of us, when we pray, pray for deliverance. We pray for God to fix this problem, heal that sickness, smooth life’s rough spots or calm troubled waters. “Deliver us from evil” we pray, because we think “evil” must be this thing making me crazy either in life or at this particular moment.

But what are we doing for God?
