Convention center study to be neutral

At the end of last month, the city hired William Greiner of Veridical, LLC to conduct a three-month feasibility study examining the possibility of a 50,000- to 60,000-square-foot convention facility in Carmel as part of the proposed Midtown redevelopment project, north of the Palladium.

“The goal (of a convention center) would be to bring money into our community that supports our businesses, makes this a more successful area and keeps our taxes low,” Brainard said.

With facilities like Ritz Charles, Oak Hill Mansion and The Fountains already established in Carmel, some are concerned that a convention center may take potential business, rather than create new business. Brainard does not believe that to be the case, although that is a component of the study.

“There’s a gap between what is available in existing facilities and what someone would get in the Indianapolis Convention Center. It’s a gap between being able to serve a banquet of over 750 and the large 20,000 to 30,000 person conventions (that would be held downtown),” Brainard said.

Suburban convention centers are not uncommon across the country. In addition to larger events, most centers take part in luncheon, banquet and wedding planning, the primary event type for Carmel’s established venues. The effect, if any, that a convention center of this size may have on other businesses in Carmel remains to be seen.

Charles Lazzara, president of Ritz Charles Inc., did not wish to comment at this time given the preliminary nature of the project.

In the past, Greiner has found cities to be both viable and not viable for facilities such as this, but stated that focusing on the facts is the most important aspect of a project like this. “(Brainard) agrees that we conduct this study from a neutral position, without any influence, preconceived opinions or outside interests. We will conduct our research and collect facts,” Greinier stated.

COMMUNITY City Council WHAT HAPPENED: Dog park progress WHAT IT MEANS: Mark Westermeier, director of Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation, updated council regarding plans for the city’s first dog park. The park will be located near 116th Street and Range Line Road in Central Park.

Westermeier explained the department has spoken with Boy Scout representatives about the loss of the Yellow Meeting House on the property, which will be demolished to make room for the park. According to Westermeier, the building would be too costly to renovate and would cause parking problems within the park.

At the meeting, Westermeier said “the master plan of the parks system will include more dog parks.” This project will shape plans for more. Future sites may include West Park and an undetermined location on the east side of Carmel.

WHAT’S NEXT: The park board will vote on the plan at its meeting today.

If approved, construction could begin later this year.

WHAT HAPPENED: City parks to buy Brookshire Pool WHAT IT MEANS: Westermeier addressed the council regarding Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation’s plans to buy the Brookshire pool located in Brookshire Golf Club.

Councilor Eric Seidensticker questioned why the city would buy this pool when homeowner’s associations own many other community pools throughout the city.

Westermeier explained the pool was not currently owned by an association and faces removal.

The pool property is located within the Brookshire Golf course already owned by the city. Westermeier pointed out that buying “it makes sense from a parks standpoint.”

The department will host city aquatic events that are difficult to host at the Monon Community Center due to the Center’s large size. The council approved the request, allowing Carmel Parks and Recreation to look into the purchase further.

WHAT’S NEXT: The park board will seek approval from a series of city departments to determine a property price.

Westermeier stated Monon Center aquatic event funds would cover the purchase.

WHAT HAPPENED: Carmel Redevelopment Commission plans WHAT IT MEANS: Council appointee Dave Bowers said the commission had examined its funds and budget. The commission requested a planning meeting with Mayor Jim Brainard, Council President Rick Sharp and Finance Committee Chair Luci Snyder to prioritize projects.

“I think that’s a great idea to allow the two bodies to collaborate as we move forward,” Sharp agreed.

WHAT’S NEXT: Commission members, Brainard, Sharp and Snyder will determine a meeting date.

War veteran tells his story Commentary by Jeff Worrell Lt. Colonel Fred Lindsey just completed his first book detailing the heroic actions performed by the men who served under him during the Vietnam War. Some 45years ago, Lt. Colonel Lindsey was the Commander of 1,000 men assigned to Command and Control South. He is the only Commander still living. They were the closest unit to Saigon and saw heavy action.

The book is titled “Secret Green Beret Commandos in Cambodia.” With the threat of prison hanging over his head, Fred was prohibited from writing about or discussing his experiences in Cambodia until the Military declassified the documents. Once that was accomplished, Fred believed it was important to create a written record of what actually happened since his unit only performed top secret missions. He actually promised a mother of a fallen soldier under his command that he would work hard to create a fitting memorial to her son in the form of this book. Fred spent three years researching material to complete the book. The book is on sale at Amazon and all proceeds are going to the Special Ops Association, the Special Forces Association and Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund for scholarships.

He has lived on the West side of Carmel more than 40 years. He is a member of the Golden

“K” Kiwanis. His friend and fellow Kiwanian Don Moehn tipped me off that we have a military hero living amongst us. He said, “I personally found this to be a great story about one of our past military leaders who contributed so much to our nation’s better image.”

Lt. Col. Lindsey said it was difficult to accurately pull together the stories about what really happened because so much time had passed. He said, “It was a challenge to dig for the truth and make sure I was not being told a wild war story.

I got to know so many of the guys and their families while researching the book. I know they are happy with the way it turned out.” The book is an accurate history of his unit which was responsible for gathering intelligence in the Southeast Asia Theatre. Their unit received a Presidential Unit Citation in April of 2001.

Amazon has given the book a 5 Star rating and Fred has already sold several hundred books since it first came out at the beginning of the year. Before concluding our interview, I thanked Fred for his service, to which he humbly replied, “You bet.”

New Ricker’s site causes concern

Neighbors successfully fought against a Ricker’s gas station at 146th Street and Gray Road, but the service station’s proposed new location is sparking some concerns about potential environmental contamination.

The new site at 146th Street and River Road is in a heavily used aquifer, said Carmel City Councilor Ron Carter. That site selection may be causing some anxiety with neighboring municipalities concerned about contaminating the groundwater.

A gas station is a permitted use under the planned unit development ordinance passed for the area a few years ago, something Carter candidly admits he and the other councilors overlooked.

“I don’t think any of us caught it,” Carter said. “If we had, it would have been deleted from the PUD. Shame on us for not catching it. … Do we want to risk the best source of water in Central Indiana for a gas station three minutes closer than the next? I live on the eastside and don’t mind driving to Range Line or 151st Street to get gas.”

The Indiana Dept. of Environmental Management requires all new service stations to install double-walled tanks and piping, leak detection systems, secondary containment for tanks and pipes and spill and overflow prevention systems, inspecting them periodically to ensure compliance.

“IDEM’s concerns about a facility that handles petroleum is that it is designed, maintained and operated properly to prevent spills and/or leaks that could contaminate ground water or surface water,” IDEM spokesman Barry Sneed said in an e-mail.

According to IDEM, 826 releases have been confirmed across Indiana since 2008. IDEM

inspects tanks once every three years. If a complaint is received or more information needs to be collected, tanks may be inspected more frequently.

Nationally, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports more than 400,000 confirmed releases of petroleum-based fuels from leaking underground storage tanks. At least one major fuel additive called methyl tertiary butyl ether – commonly referred to as MTBE – is of major concern. Considered a possible human carcinogen, even a relatively small amount of MTBE can be highly difficult to remove from water.

Jay Ricker, chairman of the Anderson-based Ricker’s, says the station would be the first the company has built in a wellhead protection area, and it is discussing the proper precautions with a consulting firm specializing in such matters.

Ricker said the company likely would install several features not typically found in gas stations in less environmentally sensitive areas.

One of the options being discussed is a holding pond that would divert fuel away from the groundwater in case of a spill.

“We’re mindful of the fact this location is in an aquifer,” Ricker said. “We’re currently looking at a number of plans to address concerns and see what makes the most sense.”

Even if the underground storage tanks don’t fail, Carter remains concerned about getting the fuel there. A traffic accident, he said, could create a spill causing major damage to area groundwater.

Alleged concerns from Indianapolis, Westfield and Noblesville have been sent to Carmel Utilities Director John Duffy, who didn’t respond to a voice mail seeking confirmation. Noblesville Spokeswoman Cara Culp refused official comment until more details about the proposed station are made available.

Bicyclists and pedestrians will have a safer trip across 146th Street starting this summer, which is when officials anticipate the Monon Pedestrian Bridge will be completed. Matt Knight, bridge program engineer for Hamilton County, said the project should be finished by the end of May even though current work at the site is on hold because of the weather.

Knight said the intermediate lift of asphalt is in place and the snow melting system is installed.

Handrails will be installed within the next few weeks, and the surface lift of asphalt will be installed in the spring.

“Right now, the bridge is essentially built,” Knight said. “The subcontractor is starting to work on (the handrails) and needs a couple weeks of workable days. Once that’s up, we should be able to open the bridge.”

Besides the railing and second layer of asphalt, Knight said the project needed light touch-ups and landscaping work which will be completed in the spring, depending on the weather. Construction on the project began in August 2012.

The Monon Bridge project is a partnership

between Westfield, Hamilton County, Carmel/ Clay Board of Parks and Recreation and Clay Township. The Hamilton County Highway Dept. has been the lead agency in designing and obtaining federal funding for the five-span, pre-engineered steel truss bridge to connect the Monon Greenway from Carmel to Westfield over and across 146th Street.

The structure spans 428 feet with a 12-foot-wide path to provide safe crossing for users.

Total construction costs were anticipated at $2.9 million. INDOT has allocated $2.5 million of federal funds to pay 80 percent of the project’s cost. Westfield Parks Director Melody Jones said the remaining $585,600 would be divided among Westfield ($156,160), Clay Township ($195,200) and Hamilton County ($234,240).

“There have been a couple of change orders to increase costs – nothing drastic,” Knight said.

According to the agreement, the county will be responsible for all structural maintenance of the bridge. The Clay Township trustee and/ or the park board will be responsible for paying the electric charges necessary to heat the bridge, maintaining the heating system and periodic removal of snow, trash and other debris from the bridge.

In 2012, Carmel saw a large number of roadway redevelopments and new construction, most notably the completion of the 146th Street and Keystone Parkway interchange.

W 141st St In 2013 and beyond, Carmel will continue to see major improvements to its roadways. More roundabouts, overpasses, W 136th St road extensions and new intersections are all planned to begin construction in the coming months and years.

With 146th Street and the intersections of U.S. 31 and W Keystone 131st St Parkway complete, INDOT is now moving onto the next portion of Major Moves, the statewide project responsible for much of the roadway redesign and redevelopment along U.S. 31.

W 126th St Carmel residents shopping north of 146th Street in the extremely congested area of Village Park and Greyhound Plaza will see a massive amount of change in 2013. The intersection at U.S. 31 and Greyhound Pass will be replaced with a combination of on-ramps and off-ramps, allowing northbound and southbound U.S. 31 traffic to continue W 116th St through the area unrestricted.

The intersection of 151st Street and U.S. 31 will remain but will be reworked to feature on-ramps and off-ramps with U.S. 31 continuing unrestricted as part of an underpass. The intersection will still allow traffic across U.S. 31 as part of an overpass, something that will not be possible at W 106th St the reworked portions of Greyhound Pass.

5 While Major Moves will continue its progress during the next several years, the City of Carmel also has a number of road improvements planned throughout 2013. The most notable improvements, the addition of several roundabouts and the extension of Illinois Street, are slated to begin as W 96th St early as May. 1 Currently awaiting funding but tentatively set to begin in June, Illinois Street will be extended from its existing end south of 116th Street down through the street’s intersection with Spring Mill Road north of I-465. Roundabouts will be installed at Illinois Street’s new intersections with 111th and 106th streets. At this point, Illinois Street is separated into three portions: 136th Street to 116th Street, 106th Street to 103rd Street and 86th Street continuing south through Indianapolis.

As part of the Major Moves initiative, INDOT and the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources are continuing plans originally laid out in 2006 to place every Hamilton County resident within 15 minutes of a pedestrian trail by 2016.

Walkways and bike paths will be installed at the intersections of U.S. 31 and 106th Street, 116th Street, 126th Street, 131st Street, 136th Street, 146th Street and 151st Street. The pathways also will be connected to established walkways and bike paths including the Monon and Midland Trace trails.

It is our position that the current trend of tattoo body art is more than a fashion statement. Move over Popeye the Sailor Man because Olive Oyl has taken over your seat at the local tattoo parlor. The percentage of women has surpassed the percentage of men sporting body art, encompassing nearly one quarter of the population in the United States. Stars, flowers, vines, butterflies and fairies have replaced anchors and barbed wire armbands among the most popular tattoos.

It’s conceivable that the rise in women being tattooed is due to a greater acceptance among the general public, caused by celebrity influence or gender equality. More than likely, the texting generation sees body art as another form of nonverbal communication in the expression of power, love, confidence, immortality and religion. Dressing for success is now literally skin deep.

Though, the question must be asked, “Is this newly vogue form of self-expression a help or a hindrance to social acceptance?”

How will the body art wear as skin starts to age? Will there be a huge market for tattoo removal in the future? After all, flowers do wilt, and stars fall from the sky. Perhaps it’s all a deliberate part of one’s pictorial life story.

Efficiently exchanging information helps to make us humans the top of the food chain.

It gives us the ability to work closely together and express complex thought through a variety of different formats – spoken and written being the most commonly employed. But in a world awash with information, how much detail do we need to get our points across?

A recent study shows that the average office worker spends about 25 percent of their time responding to or composing e-mail messages.

That amounts to around a 167-page novel written each year by each one of us. Coupled with the proliferation of text messaging, the ubiquitous voicemail and, yes, even good-oldfashioned post, most of us struggle to keep up. But, the communication matters. It keeps communities connected, families on track and businesses humming. So how do we keep the lines open without overloading our circuits?

As we go through the end-of-day rundown in our house, I’ve been known to accuse my

bride of telling of her day in real time. Even as she dutifully shares with me the particulars of the conversation she’d had with her mother, my attention wrongly begins to wane. And, I’ve been known to pare down too much.

Imagine this exchange: The Smiths had a baby. What did they name it?I’m not sure.

How big is it? I’m guessing that it is babysized. Well, do you even know what it is? I don’t know what kind of baby – I assume it is a boy or a girl. Over time, I’ve learned that gender, size, name and condition are important variables that need to be reported.

So, until us meager humans are able to effectively deploy the Vulcan mind-meld so deftly administered by Star Trek’s Mr. Spock, we have to find our own way – clumsily but sincerely.

Recent news of the city’s feasibility study of a convention center got us excited about all the possibilities for Carmel. For one, we believe the economic impact, while officially undetermined, would be a nice boost for businesses here. Any level of ancillary revenue has never been known to be a bane. Not only would hotels and eateries benefit, but so, too, would many of the specialty shops, one-of-a-kinds, that can’t be found elsewhere. Further, it would give our city yet another chance to show off itself and its numerous amenities.

Midtown, we agree, would be the ideal location for a convention center, given the proximity to City Center, The Center for the Performing Arts, the Monon Trail and the Arts & Design District; it would serve as yet another hub of activity. Mayor Jim Brainard said the idea for such a facility has been around since 1997.

Now, with the economy starting to turn for the better, it seems to us an ideal time to examine exactly how to make it happen. Current facilities can’t handle escalating crowds some events would bring. If the investment is fiscally responsible and the return all but guaranteed, it looks as if it would be a winning proposition.

••• So, the U.S. Postal Service announces, in a move for fiscal responsibility, its intent to abandon Saturday delivery in August (with the exception of P.O. boxes and package deliveries).

It’s a move that should be made in an effort to right the ship. Of course, members on both sides of the aisle in Congress already are putting up potential roadblocks. Those rocket scientists seemingly never can get together on anything.

But, then, we should all ask ourselves: What else did we expect from The Hill?

I plan to give it some thought Commentary by Christian Sorrell With Carmel recently launching its feasibility study for a potential convention center, it was not surprising to see an outcry from many Carmel residents, especially online via Twitter and Facebook. In our increasingly headlinedriven and 140-characters-or-less world, it is easy to miss the details of a story and jump to conclusions. I am guilty of this type of reaction from time to time, although I have been trying to temper my reaction to things as much as possible before learning the first story.

Last week, I looked for readers’ reactions via Twitter asking, “What are your thoughts on the possibility of a convention center around twice the size of existing facilities in Carmel?”

A number of seemingly knee-jerk reactions were quickly sent my way. Despite the fact that a study has only just been launched and nothing at all has been set in stone, I received a number of short and direct “no” replies, often without any further explanation.

I dug a bit deeper, replying to those that had sent something my way with additional questions like, “Any particular reason?” or “What if it was entirely privately funded?”

From here, the conversation began to get a bit more interesting. Once I included the fact that any potential center may be privately funded, publically funded or any combination thereof,

people started to loosen up a bit to the idea.

Even still, I received some baffling responses including one that called the potential and far from architecturally designed center an “eyesore.”

In the online world, it is so easy to give your opinion that you can often give it before being forced to give the facts a bit of time in your mind, leaving you with a gut reaction to your initial take.

With something like a convention center, this study is simply the first in a very long chain of steps, a chain that may come to an end depending on the results of the study. I have found that the more level-headed and clear-minded I try to be in my reception of information (reading an article, speaking with a city official, etc.), the more constructive the following conversation can become.

As developments, progress and change continue throughout Carmel during the next several months, I hope to do my best to steer clear of quick reactions and focus on good discussions. Won’t you join me? It’s a bit more fun over here.

Editor, I am a fourth-grader at Prairie Trace Elementary School, and we just finished an assignment to learn about a topic that is a problem in the world. I chose childhood obesity and learned some amazing stuff.

I wrote a paper about childhood obesity and was shocked to learn that more than half of the population in America between the ages of 6 and 17 are considered obese. Some experts believe that if obesity among kids continues to increase at this rate, our current generation could become the FIRST in American history to live shorter lives than their parents.

I’ve also learned that there are two sides to this issue, nutrition and exercise. A lot of children can be obese even when they eat healthy foods. I know that the Carmel schools have

tried to address nutrition by serving healthy foods, but this is only one part of the problem.

I wish the schools could create fitness clubs that would show kids all types of fun ways to exercise. In addition to the schools, our community needs to have less expensive fitness programs to help the kids that do not play sports and may not be getting enough exercise. All kids could benefit from fitness program, not just kids with a weight problem. Fitness programs could help all kids stay active and keep them away from only playing video game systems.

I think childhood obesity could be prevented if kids learned more about the importance of these two factors. Getting kids active and eating healthy foods early will help now and in their future.

Imagine my surprise when I walked in to find seven ladies a good 20 to 30 years my senior!

In a manner of speaking Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Mary Ellen has been reading a book that has me concerned. It raises expectations in women; it makes wives think their husbands are inadequate.

That’s why tomorrow, I’m tossing in the trash the latest edition of Emily Post’s “Etiquette.”

The volume is almost 800 pages and weighs two pounds. You have to hold it with two hands, but don’t use those two hands for eating fried chicken, jumbo shrimp or corn on the cob, which require another whole set of rules.

The book was actually written by the greatgreat-grandchildren of the original Emily Post, who died in 1960. The rumor is that, despite her legion of admirers, very few attended her funeral because many were afraid they’d wear something inappropriate.

Chapter 5 of the book is all about eating, table manners and restaurant etiquette. The first rule is that when out for dinner, do not violently shake your napkin when you open it. Well, I was off to a bad start. That pretty much put a damper on my first magic trick at the table.

Rules regarding dining in a restaurant are similar to those covering eating at home, which is odd since the first chapter says a woman should always keep her handbag in her lap when dining out. Ms. Post’s tome raises some serious concerns about certain disturbing trends in our society.

“Salad – to my consternation – is now served before the meal,” she says. Yes, that is something to be “consterned” about. But, is it permissible to walk out of the restaurant before you order if the waitress has six facial piercings? Not a word on this.

How to eat a banana is something we have all struggled with. “At home, peel the banana halfway down and eat it bite by bite.” I’m on safe ground when the rules for humans are pretty much the same as for orangutans. At a restaurant, says Ms. Post, you should peel the whole fruit, cut it into pieces and eat with a fork. This is why ordering a banana off the dessert menu has never really caught on.

I’ve apparently violated all kinds of rules of etiquette when eating sushi, spaghetti, pizza and even soup, but I don’t want Emily Post’s ghost lecturing me on proper dining. It’s bad enough when my doctor looks at my cholesterol readings and tells me I’m not eating right.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower • PG-13, 102 minutes The Sessions • R, 95 minutes Commentary by Chris Lloyd I’ve never attempted a double video review before, but the simultaneous release of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and “The Sessions” make for a perfect opportunity. Both are small, heartfelt, exquisitely acted dramas about people living on the margins of their community. And each film was virtually ignored in the Academy Award nominations.

In “The Sessions,” John Hawkes plays Mark, a man in his late 30s who is paralyzed and lives inside an iron lung. Frustrated with his virginity, he retains sex therapist Cheryl (Helen Hunt) to help bring him into adulthood, as he puts it.

“Perks” may just be the best high school movie of the last two decades. Writer/director

Stephen Chbosky, who adapted the film from his own novel, perfectly captures the moods and fears of the teenage soul. Charlie (Logan Lerman) is a smart, outcast underclassman who gets taken under the wing of Patrick (Ezra Miller) and Sam (Emma Watson), a pair of popular but misfit seniors.

In a film year of highs and lows, these two stood head and shoulders above the crowd … despite Oscar’s snub.

Grant helps IRT further its mission news@currentinwestfield.com The Indiana Repertory Theatre announced a $10,000 grant from The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae. The grant makes The Sallie Mae Fund a Student Matinee and Artist in the Classroom sponsor for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which runs April 10 through May 12 on the IRT OneAmerica Stage.

“We believe theater can be used as a primary tool to bring meaning into the lives of students, making the arts an invaluable component of their education,” said Steven Stolen, managing director at IRT. “This generous gift from The Sallie Mae Fund will allow more Indiana students the opportunity to engage in literature and history through theater. This is an exciting partnership for us as we continue to introduce live theater to Indiana students.”

In 2012, the IRT provided 105,472 live professional theater experiences for audiences.

These experiences included 41,747 students and teachers from 57 of Indiana’s 92 counties, making the IRT one of the most youth-oriented professional theaters in the country. A staff of more than 100 seasonal and year-round employees creates eight productions exclusively for Indiana audiences. Actors, directors and designers are members of professional stage unions.

“The Sallie Mae Fund is proud to support arts education programs that help students achieve academic goals and contribute to more vibrant communities,” said Jon Kroehler, senior vice president of Sallie Mae at the Fishers office.

“With this curricula-linked program, the Indiana Repertory Theatre is building on a strong relationship with teachers and schools to offer a matinee that will resonate with student audiences and enrich their overall education.”

Everyday exercise tips for winter Commentary by Jessica Swenberg, MD If you find yourself slacking off on your New Year’s resolution to exercise, there are some great ways to stay fit indoors that don’t require an expensive gym membership. Even during the winter months when it’s harder to stay active, it’s important to keep moving. To stay healthy and fit, adults are strongly encouraged to engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise three to five times a week.

With a little creativity, you can easily work fitness into your daily activities. At work, bypass the elevator and take the stairs. If you’re running errands, park your car at the far end of the parking lot and take advantage of a longer walk to the door.

Household chores also provide fitness opportunities. Turn on some music and move more while you’re vacuuming. If your home has stairs, be deliberate about making multiple trips up and down them. Carrying a loaded laundry basket up the stairs can help tone arms and provide cardiovascular benefits.

Do you watch TV at night? Do sit-ups, pushups or other floor exercises while catching up Listen up – Why do some garish men have trouble listening to women? They can blame science.

One study has found that because of the shape and dimensions of a woman’s larynx and vocal chords, as well as other factors, it takes harder work for a male brain to listen.

As we know, Indiana weather in February and March can be fickle – warm one day and cold the next. Even when temperatures are in the 20s and 30s, you can layer clothing and take a brisk walk outdoors. As long as there is no risk of falling due to ice or snow, walking in the winter is a beneficial way to get your recommended weekly exercise. Consider making walking or fitness dates with a friend; you’ll be less likely to skip out on exercise if you have a standing appointment.

Will my surgery now cost more?

Commentary by Dr. Barry Eppley

Q: Will ObamaCare affect the cost of any of your services? I assume that cosmetic surgery and cosmetic services will be unaffected since these are cash and not insurance-reimbursed procedures.

A: Unfortunately, your assumption is incorrect.

ObamaCare impacts all medical services including that of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic services. The Affordable Health Care Act, passed into law in 2010, has imposed changes on our business. One change became effective in January, the new 2.3 percent Federal Excise Tax on all medical devices which affects any cosmetic procedure in which a device is implanted. This also affects the very popular injectable fillers which are classified as medical devices and also are included under the new federal excise tax. Botox is classified as a drug so it is excluded from the tax. In most practices, these new taxes will be passed on through the cost of the procedure.

Q: What is the difference between liposculpture and liposuction? I am 55-years-old and scared of my skin sagging or wrinkling. At my age with liposuction, I would love my inner thighs, knees and saddlebags gone forever.

A: On the one hand, the difference between liposuction and liposculpture is largely one of marketing. The term liposculpture implies a greater degree of finesse and precision than the historic term of liposuction. As a result, some

doctors use this term for any form of liposuction because it simply sounds better. That does not necessarily mean, however, that it is better or that the body is truly sculpted. Conversely, if applied to the right situation, the term liposculpture may have some real meaning. The right situation in my experience is when one is doing smaller areas of fat reduction where getting a more precise result is more important than just volume reduction. In short, liposuction implies large volume fat reduction and liposculpture implies smaller and more precise volumes of fat removed to create curved contour changes.

Based on your age and areas of concern, however, these liposuction concepts are not what is important for you. You are appropriately concerned about what will happen to your skin with any form of liposuction. The effects of liposuction on the overlying skin change based on the area being treated. This issue is less relevant for the knees in which the skin has no risk of sagging. But in the inner and outer thighs, you have to be careful that in getting rid of the bulges you do not trade off for unsightly wrinkly skin. Some conservative reduction will likely avoid these dreaded and irreversible skin issues.

Is umbrella coverage a necessity?

Commentary by Jamie Ianigro Question from Lindsey J. from Fishers: My insurance agent is always trying to sell me an umbrella policy. Is this something I should consider adding? It just seems like an extra cost.

Answer from Jamie Ianigro: It sounds like you have a good agent. I always encourage my clients to at least consider adding the extra layer of liability protection that an umbrella/catastrophe policy will add. An umbrella policy is really all about having the peace of mind in knowing that your family and assets are protected.

There are many ways to end up with an umbrella claim but the most common umbrella claim is an auto accident involving multiple injuries and very costly medical bills. The other common claim is an incident on your property that results in injury. Medical and legal costs can eat up the underlying limits of your homeowner, auto, boat or motorcycle policy pretty quickly. Your umbrella policy or your personal assets cover these costs when your policy limits are exhausted.

This is definitely a topic you should discuss with your independent insurance agent to make sure you are protected by a level of coverage that you are comfortable with. Most people should be pretty comfortable with a coverage limit of $1 million, but limits exceeding $10 million are available if you are looking for more.

Umbrella claims can happen no matter how prepared you are. Instead of talking about prevention this week, I want to show a couple of claim scenarios to illustrate how an umbrella policy will work.

Scenario #1: The insured’s son was driving his car on a short road trip with a friend, the claimant. The car drifted off the road and into a phone pole when the son fell asleep at the wheel. The passenger was hospitalized for more than a month with broken bones and internal injuries. The hospitalization was followed by some time in a wheelchair, but he was able to walk again after six months of physical therapy. This claim cost $800,000 with $300,000 coming from the auto limits and $500,000 coming from the umbrella limits.

Scenario #2: The insured is having a summer barbeque and one of the guests steps off the edge of a retaining wall resulting in a spinal cord injury. He required multiple surgeries, an extended hospital stay and physical therapy. This claim cost $1.8 million with $1 million coming from the homeowner’s limits and $800,000 coming from the umbrella limits.

My kids always ask to do new things. “Can we…” is the start of a lot of sentences at our house and, unfortunately, “no” can become the easy answer. It’s easy because it allows you to move on quickly. It’s unfortunate because “no” also shuts down the possibility for a “yes” and that yes might be where the opportunity lies.

The yes is where the learning happens. My failure as a parent lies in taking the easy route and saying “no.” If you say no enough, people begin

to stop asking.

It’s the same at the office, too many negative answers stop the questions and more often than not, the opportunities lie with the questions.

Questions challenge you; questions are the offense in your game. The questions knock you off center and create a closer look at what you are doing. The questions allow you to learn and grow. The questions are for the eagles. Songbirds, eagles and chickens are each a feathered fowl. But, the songbird only sings and the chicken gets eaten.

A lesson at half-time – How did the Super Bowl half-time shows get so big? According to Forbes’ Mike Ozanian, Fox’s Rupert Murdoch pulled off a coup during the 1992 half-time show. Black makes moulding pop Commentary by Vicky Early If you are a true interior decorating aficionado, I am sure you have experienced this. It happens when you least expect it. You know the feeling … you walk into a room and let out a gasp. The room is incredible, and you have to stop and simply absorb it.

This typically happens when risks are taken with skill. One of my favorite leaps out of the norm is an unexpected color of molding.

I once saw a room painted an unassuming pale blue and the thick molding around the windows, the crown molding, and the doors were all painted a warm black. Yes, black molding paired with unassuming pale blue walls sounds horrible. The finished product was incredible.

Black is that grounding color that flatters any hue that stands alongside it. Black is thought of as a sophisticated color, but for those who fear the dark, it’s often written off as too risky.

Sophistication is defined by black, so light walls and black trim and doors are destined to be classic. Crown molding, doors, shoe molding, stair treads, railings, bookcases and cabinetry take on an air of importance when painted black.

When black is too intimidating, consider a color for molding and doors while leaving the walls a color closer to white. Elevated style can be added to this combination by adding nail heads to the closet door.

Commas are splicing up life Commentary by Jordan Fischer There are a lot of ways to use the versatile comma. Today, we’ll be talking about a common way to misuse it: comma splices.

The basic function of a comma is to create a pause in the pace of reading. Pauses are often used when listing items, when offering additional, non-essential details or when combining two independent clauses with the help of a coordinating conjunction like “and.” A comma splice is a failed attempt at the latter.

Independent clauses are, appropriately enough, clauses which can stand on their own as sentences without additional modification. For example, consider a young girl playing kickball: “Sally stepped up to the plate. Then she kicked the ball.” Each sentence is whole in and of itself.

But, what if we want to make the action seem faster for the reader? We can speed up the pace by reducing the hard stop a period offers to the softer pause of a comma. That sentence might look like this: “Sally stepped up to the plate, and then kicked the ball.”

Comma splices come into play when writers forget to include one of the seven coordinating conjunctions (“for,” “and,” “nor,” “but,” “or,” “yet,” “so”) after a comma used to combine two independent clauses. A comma splice of our ex-

ample above would be: “Sally stepped up to the plate, then kicked the ball.” Fixing the comma splice is as simple as inserting a coordinating conjunction or using a period to remake the clauses into separate sentences.

Comma splices also frequently occur when writers attempt to be clever by joining two independent clauses together with a comma and conjunctive adverb. Conjunctive adverbs – a long list which includes words like “therefore,” “furthermore,” “anyway” and “nonetheless” – can be used to join independent clauses, but only with the help of a period or semicolon.

So how do you recognize a comma splice? If you’ve used a comma to join two clauses, examine whether they are independent, or can stand on their own. If so, have you used a coordinating conjunction after the comma? If not, you’ve likely created a comma splice. Fortunately, the solution is a simple and quick one: insert a coordinating conjunction, or separate the clauses with a period.

Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora may sound like exotic destinations, but they are well within reach for sunshine-seeking Hoosiers. French Polynesia consists of a string of about 130 islands in the South Pacific, with the beautiful Society Islands being the most popular with tourists.

Tahiti is the largest of the three islands. It is the commercial hub of French Polynesia and the stopping point for all flights from the U.S. While many tourists may overlook Tahiti and head directly to the other islands, Tahiti has many charms of its own – the lush green mountains, turquoise water and brilliant views of Moorea. The largest town on Tahiti is Papeete, and its Municipal Market is a main attraction.

The lure for shoppers is the exquisite black pearl. You can find this souvenir from the Tahitian waters everywhere, ranging in price from $20 to more than $10,000 depending on the pearl’s quality and setting.

The smaller, low-key Moorea is a 30-minute ferry ride from Papeete. This island has been described by many as the most beautiful place on earth. Activities include ATV rides to a waterfall, picnics on a motu (small islet), Polynesian dance shows and snorkeling among colorful tropical reef fish. No trip to Moorea would be complete without a trek up Belvedere Lookout, with its awe-inspiring panorama of Cook’s and Opunohu Bays. (Moorea’s charms worked on

Lazarus, love and patience Commentary by Bob Walters Valentine’s Day is a great holiday to have in the middle of winter – the passionate warmth of love imprinted on our minds and bodies amid the frost and desolation of mid-February.

The great chapter about love in the Bible is generally considered to be Paul’s 1 Corinthians 13 in the New Testament, but it has nothing to do with the excitations of Valentine’s Day. Paul is describing the divine love of Jesus Christ and the example it should be in our lives as Christians, not the roses and romance of modern culture. And a central aspect of divine love, Paul teaches, is patience.

Theologian Kenneth Bailey offers fascinating insight on patience as the language of divine love in his truly excellent book “Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes.” Bailey cites the lessons of patience in Jesus’ parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man (Luke 16:19-30), and amplifies them using Paul’s passage on love along with other familiar Bible stories. Bailey writes: “In his matchless definition of Christian love (agape), Paul lists characteristics that are found in such love (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). The list begins with one form of patience (makrothymia in Greek) and ends with a second form of patience (hypomone).

“Makrothymia is a composite word consisting of makran (far away) and thymos (anger). As a

single word makrothymia has to do with ‘putting one’s anger far away.’ This is the patience of the powerful who are able to wreck vengeance on their enemies but choose to be patient and refrain from doing so. It is the patience of David standing over the sleeping body of Saul when Saul went to kill David (1 Samuel 26:6-25)...

David’s aide urged him to kill his sleeping enemy. But David exhibited makrothymia and stayed his hand.

“The other form of patience, hypomone, is also comprised of two Greek words. The first is the preposition hypo (under). The second is mone, which has to do with endurance. The person with hypomone is willing to “remain under” great stress or suffering. The primary biblical example of this virtue is Mary standing silently at the cross and choosing to not walk away.”

Divine love, then, is inextricably linked to merciful Christ-like patience, while Valentine’sDay-type love is often marked by passionate, human impatience.

May we have the Godly discernment and wisdom to know when those we love need our patience more than our passion.

‘His and hers’ can create harmony Commentary by David Decker For couples, the idea of living together can seem exciting, romantic and adventurous. And it can be, unless you let everyday clutter get in the way. Arguments over space, messes and bad habits can sometimes get in the way of being able to enjoy each other’s company. Almost everyone has experienced these issues at one point, so I’m sure you all would agree that it’s no fun to argue about such nit-picky things. Since Valentine’s Day isn’t too far off, this might be the perfect time to start some home improvement projects intended to make your life as a couple happier.

Even though you are sharing a home, no couple wants to share everything. That’s why the idea of “his and hers” comes in handy when organizing your home. Look for opportunities and design strategies that can separate your stuff from your partner’s. Let’s first take a look at strategies for the bathroom, a room that tends to get dirty quickly, be filled to the brim with products (ladies: I’m looking at you), and is overall a difficult place to share without occasionally butting heads. Here, I’d suggest installing a double sink unit complete with separate storage cabinets and drawers. These units can look luxurious while separating each person’s bathroom items.

Storing toiletries in drawers will free up counter space, make the bathroom look more spacious and ensure that neither person feels crunched for storage. If your master bathroom is simply one large, open space, I’d also suggest installing some sort of privacy screen by the toilet, if you don’t have one already.

Because of their convenience, his and her closets are becoming extremely popular in new homes.

It’s possible to convert unused corner space into an extra closet, so this might be a weekend project you’d like to investigate.
