It is our position the sweeping online protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act was executed effectively by opponents of the bills. On Jan. 18, thousands of Web sites ceased operation for a day in a well-organized effort to educate the public on possible infringements to Internet freedoms, if the copyright protection bills were passed with their current wording. The top search engine, Google, even blacked out its banner for a day and put up a link to an online petition that collected 7 million signatures. Some referred to these tactics as a “cybertantrum.” Others reveled in the power of “geeks taking the streets.”

Regardless, the cyber businesses executed its First Amendment right to “peacefully assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” in a very clever way that would certainly be endorsed by the likes of John Galt. The protestors effectively occupied cyberspace without disease, crime-ridden encampments, intimidation or violence. As the saying goes, ‘Speak softly and carry a big stick’ – or bandwidth – as the case may be; you will go far. This peaceful cyber protest likely resulted in shelving of the bills, a redress effort worthy of addressing.

It is our position the Right to Work protestors have crossed the line from peaceful assembly to overt intimidation by demonstrating at private residences of government officials. Fueling the fire are publicly elected officials who walked off the job for five weeks last summer and continue to boycott their civic duties and responsibilities, while creating a backlog of important legislative agenda items. Freedom to assemble is necessary to encourage free and open debate in a democracy. However, it is not a license to execute protest tactics that border on martial law, as evidenced by protestors picketing on the sidewalks at the private residences of House Speaker Brian Bosma and bill coauthor Rep. Jerry Torr. This tactic is not Theodore Roosevelt’s definition of a bully pulpit; it’s Tony Soprano’s. Although the legislation will reach the governor’s desk prior to the Super Bowl, the fight is likely not over. While Super Bowl organizers have space designated for freedom of speech demonstrators, we hope these protests remain peaceful and don’t overshadow the hard work thousands of volunteers have poured into hosting the world’s premier sporting event.

• We managed to take in the Super Bowl Village last week. What an impressive, comprehensive venue that was. Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and his team really pulled out all the stops to accommodate the world’s greatest sporting event (other than Brian on a treadmill), and we believe the mayors in Hamilton County should take note of what can be done with infrastructure to ensure an event yielding memories that can last a lifetime. Did the traffic stink? Yes, it certainly did. But we knew that going in, so no com-

• Only 361 days until Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans. Can’t wait to see how long it will take until the references to Hurricane Katrina come rolling out. Certainly, it was a tragedy, and, certainly, SB47 is just a football game. There should be no connection.

• Mike Pence, the man we believe, at this writing, to be a worthy candidate to succeed Mitch Daniels as our governor was right on point last week, when he termed the Right to Work bill signed into law by Daniels “a victory for economic freedom and Hoosiers.”

We’re all for that.

• Just wait until the Republican candidates’ races for the presidential nomination turn ugly.

You’ve seen nothing yet. What’s coming will make you wonder who’s who and what’s what.

Editor, Carmel Clay Schools Supt. Jeff Swensson has imposed an absolute ban on outside treats at class parties in school. The children at Towne Meadow Elementary get a cookie and a 2-ounce cup of juice. Under the prior principal, it was popcorn and water. I guess things have improved. We are not permitted to send treats home. If the children use a food item for a game (for example, Conversation Hearts for bingo tokens), we have to make sure nothing is consumed. Ironically, a similar ban on party treats in another school system recently made national news with a link on Drudgereport.com. I had to laugh out loud at the outrage expressed by the online readership, since class parties in Carmel have been that way for many years.

Compare this to the policies at my children’s private schools, where there is absolutely no restriction. The mothers are conscientious; we

offer fruit and/or raw veggies, something salty and something sweet. The children aren’t obese, nor do they binge on the treats. We enjoy offering themed foods.

We are made aware of allergy concerns and act accordingly. I’ve yet to witness or hear of any remarkable allergy, event despite the presence of children with severe nut allergies. Go figure: Adults are able to throw parties without killing the kids or turning them into candidates for bariatric surgery.

It’s my understanding Swensson is unyielding on this issue, despite pleas for greater flexibility from the Parent Teacher Organizations.

It is our position he needs to lighten up! He has sucked all the fun out of class parties in our schools.

By Terry Anker Whenever possible and practical, it makes sense to support local shops and restaurants.

While there certainly are any number of out-ofstate or internationally-owned businesses that do good things in our town, the biggest and most vociferous advocates for our communities are ordinarily those that are homegrown. Pfizer may sell a ton of its pharmaceuticals in central Indiana, but it was Eli Lilly and Co. that threw its support behind our Super Bowl effort. Pfizer likely is helping get the big game slated for in New York, where the headquarters are based. But, I also like the fact local businesses are often smaller and closer to the intent of the original founders.

They are more able to adapt to local influence and standards. And, they are much more likely to deliver a unique and distinctly regional attitude.

In visiting one such indigenous establishment, I found myself in line behind an affable enough group of 20-something-year-olds. Wear-

ing neckties and white shirts, they were cleancut and polite in their demeanor. Yet as they passed and I approached the counter to greet the proprietor, I found him looking over my shoulder to keep an eye on these young men as they continued to peruse the merchandise. “Did you see the tats?” he asked. Indeed, I noticed one of the youngsters had an indecipherable tattoo emerging from his collar, just below his ear on the left nape of his neck.

Did it mean he was likely going to rob the joint?

Probably not. But it did remind me how we choose to communicate our individuality necessarily carries with it a number of messages that may be unintended, and even undesired. Just as we have a right to express, do others have a right to judge?

Get to know the unique tastes of City Center

By Kevin Kane kevin@youarecurrent.com Larry Hanes heard while in California of a cooking technique used on eggs that had Golden State residents driving 45 minutes for a taste.

He has since brought his own version to Carmel and anticipates similar pilgrimages from foodies in search of a cuisine unique to the Midwest.

Hanes opened Eggshell Bistro, his first restaurant, in Hanes Carmel City Center six weeks ago, but its menu and concept were three years in the making. He describes his menu as “global fusion,” a product of his travels to major metropolitan areas in the United States and Europe.

He studied restaurants in New York, San Francisco, London and others, and during those trips identified some of the best, and worst, practices employed by these restaurants. Coupling these findings with a master’s degree thesis detailing his plans for a restaurant, the foundation for Eggshell Bistro was created.

“I want to give people more choices,” Hanes said. “There is so much in the breakfast world that is untapped.”

The primary example is the cooking technique, sous vide, which is the heart of Eggshell’s menu. His eggs are cooked using laboratory technology that cooks them evenly and at an exNearly everything is shared at divvy – from the food to the conversations.

In fact, the concept of the restaurant stems from owners Richelle and Kevin Rider’s desire to share their favorite dining experiences.

Richelle Rider, who also serves as the restaurant’s chef, said she and her husband try Rider to pack as many restaurants and flavors into each of their trips out of town.

The best way to do that, they have found, is to forgo traditional, single-entrée meals and move from restaurant to restaurant, eating small dishes with different flavors at each stop.

“That’s the way we like to eat and we wanted to bring it here,” she said. “The smallplate concept is big in large cities but it hasn’t hit Indianapolis yet. We wanted to be on the forefront.”

While its menu still includes some “big plate” options, most patrons at divvy order small items and share them with the rest of their party – or anyone else sitting nearby.

Rider said one of the restaurant’s more popular features is its community tables at which guests are seated next to strangers and encouraged to

act temperature for 75 minutes. The end result, he said, is an egg that “holds itself together perfectly” with a yoke that he said is best described as “velvety.”

But the technique would be wasted without great products, Hanes said. That’s why he personally selects all of the fruits and vegetables and uses eggs from kelp-fed chickens that he said are “truly free-range.”

The restaurant combines its unique cuisine with artisanal coffee pairings from Blue Bottle Coffee.

“We’re the only ones in the Midwest that carry their coffee,” Hanes said.

Blue Bottle currently is working with Eggshell’s menu to create suggestions for perfect pairings, and the restaurant could begin offering dinner services on certain nights beginning this month.

A few feet away at the bar, parties can try smaller amounts of the restaurant’s beers and unique cocktails, such as the Maple Manhattan, a sweet twist on the classic.

With a restaurant concept that encourages guests to try several dishes during each visit, Rider said she needed to pack a lot of variety into divvy’s menu.

“It’s huge and it’s awesome. You can come back five times in a row and not repeat anything,” she said. “It’s really just inspired by the things I love.”

Mangia! owner Lee Tyler said his restaurant’s move to Carmel City Center has helped unearth a gem in the community.

“It’s a good restaurant, but people just wouldn’t give it a chance,” Tyler said of the restaurant’s days near 116th Street and Range Line Road.

Tyler “We were still elegant inside but it just didn’t have much curb appeal.”

Now Mangia! has an exterior appearance that matches its inside environment, he said, and the restaurant recently added lunch services Monday through Friday and a new dinner service on Sundays. What has not undergone a substantial change, however, is the menu. Mangia! still offers authentic northern Italian cuisine made from old family recipes.

It includes a number of traditional favorites, but Tyler said Mangia’s atmosphere and execution of these dishes is unique.

“Everything we do stands out,” he said.

“On occasion I’ve tried to take one item off the menu and put on something else, and somebody always has a fit. If we have the ingredients, we’ll make it. It doesn’t have to be on the menu. That’s our motto.”

After eight years as an emergency dispatcher, Karen von Kamecke Sutton made what was for her an obvious career choice: opening a cupcakery.

The decision doesn’t sound as unusual when considering that her incoming cupcake orders routinely exceeded what she could produce for her 2008 Carmel Farmers Market booth. So in 2009, she left the city’s communications center and opened shop at a gas station on Range Line Road. Holy Cow, Cupcakes! has been in its new home at Carmel City Center since July, and Sutton has expanded her services and cupcake varieties exponentially since her earliest days in the baking business.

Today, Holy Cow offers 50 types of cupcakes. Of these, 15 are made fresh daily and include two monthly offerings – up from one at the old location. A dozen of any one of the 50 flavors can be ordered at any time, and Sutton said local and organic ingredients are used in

But some of Mangia’s menu items – like the rosticianna, a roasted pork loin stuffed with Italian sausage, mushrooms and pancetta - are found at few other restaurants, if any, Tyler said. He added that the atmosphere inside the restaurant isn’t “cookie cutter” and also distinguishes Mangia! from comparable restaurants in the area.

The floor plan includes several small, secluded areas where guests can converse “without shouting,” Tyler said. Its views overlook fountains, the Palladium and other City Center structures, and fine art lines the restaurant’s walls. her products as much as possible.

While Holy Cow has added 10 new cupcake varieties since its move – including Nutella, sweet potato and gingerbread – its original favorites also are “10 times better,” she said, thanks to the addition of two new chefs.

“They’ve upped our cupcakes to be even better than they were before,” she said.

But Holy Cow no longer is just a cupcake store.

Sutton also has added pastries, coffee and espresso to the business’ daily menu and has expanded its hours.

The changes seem to be working. Sutton said business has tripled since her move and this year she could take her next step toward her ultimate goal: “cupcake domination.”

“You’ll definitely see us somewhere else by the end of the year,” she said.

Car rides now good COMMENTARY

By Danielle Wilson “Iceberg lettuce does not constitute a green vegetable.” This is what I inform my 13-year-old son as I’m driving him to band practice. He’s trying to convince me he’s a healthy eater based on his measly consumption of raw carrots, fried shrimp and the occasional nibble of the aforementioned lettuce. As irrelevant as this conversation sounds, I love the fact we’re actually communicating. Thanks to heart-to-hearts like this one, I’m now embracing my role as a short-people chauffeur and honestly enjoying car time with my kids.

It wasn’t always this way. As any parent can tell you, transporting little ones is often an exercise in stamina, contortionism and futility. You can’t just “pop out” to the mall or “run over” to the grocery when you have young children, especially when you’re under strict naptime constraints, and the process of loading toddlers into a minivan can take longer than the trip itself. And when they’re too young to leave alone, it’s an all-or-nothing deal. If my preschooler had a play date, I also had to pack up his twin and baby sisters, and either pawn off my first grader at a neighbor’s, or drag him along, too.

I used to dread leaving the house. I would do it, because my sanity depended on getting out, but I despised the whole packing process, and frankly, never cared much for the car ride itself.

Those long drives to the zoo and back were very lonely, indeed, when my kids could only cry, whine, fight or pee themselves.

But oh, how the times change! My youngest turns 8 next month (at which time, she plans to burn her legally required booster seat), and with the twins 10 and the oldest a teen, finding oneon-one time is almost impossible. But not in the confines of the car. In that gloriously small space, each is a prisoner to my questions and must divulge, under threat of tardiness or nailson-chalkboard karaoke, the most intimate details of their young lives. So now, I actually look forward to cross-town practices, out-of-town games and downtown activities, because I’m able to engage in real, meaningful conversations with my offspring without the distractions of electronics. And even when I’m carpooling odiferous soccer teammates or neighborhood posse members, eavesdropping on their conversations provides tremendous insight into the type of child I am raising. Like an argumentative, possibly malnourished seventh grader.

So bring on the car rides! Peace out.

One man’s passion, another man’s joy COMMENTARY

By Jeff Worrell Dennis Glander really knows how to make a room come alive. With his God-given, pianoplaying talent, and his love for the Great American Songbook, Dennis literally helps residents in the Memory Care Unit at Riverwalk Senior Community not just come alive, but FEEL alive. Witnesses in the room during his monthly visits say, “By the time he hits the chorus of Cole Porter’s ‘Night and Day,’ magic overtakes the room. They respond to Dennis like no other.”

The folks in the Memory Care Center are typically unresponsive, quiet and often times, confused. But Dennis dispenses a medicine sure to heal by bringing back happy memories of days gone by. As if Dennis is able to cast a spell, his listeners’ lips begin to move mouthing the lyrics of “Tea for Two.” Lips, which otherwise, remain still, and voices which fail to speak enter the world Dennis creates and happily sing along to “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby,” “Sunny Side of the Street” and “Pennies From Heaven.” You can see the room come alive. Dennis says, “They usually don’t understand my introduction of the song, which includes a little history. But, when I play, we connect. They even make requests!”

Seventy years old himself, Dennis has a rich

history of delighting audiences across the Midwest. In his early days, he toured with famous bands under the direction of Tommy Dorsey and Henry Mancini. For more than 20 years, he worked for the Yamaha Piano Company getting to know people like Brian Hostetler, co-owner of Piano Solutions in Carmel. “It doesn’t surprise me Dennis is giving himself to others. He is a great guy, loves music and wants to share it,” he said.

His neighbors in Carmel neighborhood Carrington Woods, on the east side, know what I’m talking about. Each March, to coincide with a famous Irish holiday and his own birthday, Dennis celebrates with a huge jazz bash. The furniture comes out of the living room to make way for the band. Plenty of corned beef and cabbage is consumed as friends, family and neighbors enjoy the music led by Dennis, expertly delivering his favorites from the piano.

To have a deep, passionate love for something is great. But to help others with it is even greater. Dennis Glander – a lucky man.

Surrogacy – Is it the right option for your family?

Are you struggling with building your family? Surrogacy may be an option for you. Surrogacy is an assisted reproductive technology which provides an option for individuals or couples who are unable to conceive or carry a child. Advances in reproductive methods including in vitro fertilization (IVF) provide alternatives for creation and implantation of an embryo for pregnancy. A surrogate agrees to become pregnant for the purpose of giving the child to another individual or couple (the “intended parent(s)” or “IPs”). Parties to a surrogate arrangement typically enter into a surrogacy contract (or surrogacy agreement) which details the terms of the process including costs.

Surrogacy is still a process which is not well understood. In a gestational surrogacy, the Surrogate carries the fertilized embryo provided by the “Intended Parents” which are usually the biological parents. In some cases, the embryo may consist of donor material. Regardless, the Gestational Surrogate is not the biological mother. There are financial and emotional risks with surrogacy similar to adoption. A consultation with an attorney can help prospective parents determine which options are best based upon their resources and preferences. Every surrogacy relationship is different, and the needs of the Intended Parents and Surrogate may change during the course of the surrogacy.

While Surrogacy fees are similar to adoption, there are different obligations. Typically, the Surrogate receives a one-time initial fee, plus monthly fees, as well as a fee upon the birth of the child(ren). Other expenses will include medical care, maternity clothes, prenatal vitamins, and nutritional food. Legal fees for both the Intended Parents and the Surrogate will also be incurred, as well as miscellaneous fees to obtain criminal, abuse and neglect, and credit background checks for the Intended Parents and the Surrogate. Fees will vary depending upon the particular surrogacy relationship.

Surrogates may also be compensated for pain and suffering and increased medical expenses as a result of labor and delivery. Even during prenatal care, costs must be considered, with an example of an additional expense being an invasive procedure such as amniocentesis. Parties must also fully understand the serious risks of premature birth, fetal death or death of the Surrogate. The key element is that the parties maintain open communication, which can become difficult at various stages of the surrogacy relationship. Intended Parents should take time to create a plan for dealing with issues that may arise over the course of the surrogacy.

Surrogacy is not the right option for everyone, but in addition to domestic and international adoption programs, it provides an alternative for people struggling with infertility. 4-H callout Sunday

By Robert Herrington robert@youarecurrent.com Those interested in learning more about the Hamilton County 4-H program are invited to attend a callout from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Exhibition Center at the Hamilton County 4-H Grounds, 2003 Pleasant St., Noblesville.

The event provides a “taste of 4-H” with sample projects and information about the program.

“Guests will be able to talk to project leaders, current 4-Hers and leaders of clubs,” said Bernie Huber of the Purdue Extension Hamilton County Office. “They will also be able to see actual 4-H projects from the past.”

Huber described the event as an open house, saying those interested in attending can come and go as they please – spending as much or little time as they’d like.

“They will have fun and have a lot of their questions answered,” she said.

March 1 is the last day for Hamilton County youth in grades three through 12 to enroll in the 4-H Program for 2012. The program is informal educational program where youth “learn by doing.” Youth can learn life skills such as cooperation, leadership, decision making, responsibility and citizenship through hands-on projects in more than 60 different subject areas.

State Sen. Mike Delph’s proposed education bill that would, in part, reward Indiana’s top school districts passed out of the Senate Committee on Education Jan. 25 by a vote of 6-2, but the bill has been amended since its original presentation. Last month, Delph reached a compromise with the Indiana High School Athletic Association to remove a component that would effectively eliminate class basketball. A section in the bill mandating the teaching of cursive writing has been removed, and language creating a uniform school start date after Labor Day was amended to require public schools to start school no earlier than the fourth Monday in August.

Work on new luxury apartments ‘right on schedule’

By Kevin Kane kevin@youarecurrent.com The lot contains little more than dirt at this point, but leasing will begin in April for highend apartments under construction near U.S. 31 and Carmel Drive.

Work began in early November on Penn Circle, a $20 million Milhaus Development project near the roundabout at Old Meridian Street and Pennsylvania Street. The development will include 193 apartments with high-end features and amenities, and the company said last week the work is right on schedule.

“Steel is in place for the area around the leasing and amenity/hospitality area for the first floor of the first building (four stories),” David Leazenby, vice president of predevelopment, said last week in an e-mail. “Wood framing will begin soon for the upper levels. This first building will be complete in July. The second building was granted a building permit this week, so it will begin shortly.”

The entire project will include five buildings on the 6-acre site, and is expected to take a total of 15 months to complete. A .76-acre parcel is set aside for future retail use, though Leazenby said the company will wait to determine how

many and what types of businesses will occupy that space. Banks and restaurants have already expressed interest in the location, he said. Depending on the types of businesses in this building, additional residential units could be added above them, Leazenby said.

Advice for new runners: My best advice is to think about whole-body health and to crosstrain. If you focus so much on distance training and forget about nutrition and muscle development, you run a high risk of injury or burnout.

That will help you enjoy a lifetime of running.

Marijuana: To legalize or not?

By Jason Peek There has been a lot of talk in my barbershop recently about decriminalizing, regulating and taxing Marijuana in Indiana. I have heard it on a daily basis from all types of people, and the majority of them are in favor of this – believe it or not, Carmel! Indiana Senate Bill 347 would amend marijuana penalties and House Bill 1370 would allow physician-supervised use of medical marijuana. I’ve personally studied a few of the facts and arguments on this and was shocked at how much more tobacco, alcohol, prescription drugs and even some foods are worse for you than pot. I also learned it has many medical, “natural” benefits, and could bring millions of dollars in tax revenue to each state, but I’ll let you research on your own. It would cut down on crime, populated jails and save Indiana millions of dollars in spending to pursue a drug war we are losing. It would also make the “wait” harder for underage people to get it if it was regulated like smokes and drinks. I also have talked to several doctors and people in the medical field who don’t have one person

who came in for use of marijuana that resulted negatively. In fact, it helps a lot of people with medical problems. Prohibition failed once and created a lot of rich criminals, but when it was over, they all stood there with their jaws on the floor thinking of how to make money again.

I’m all for less crime, bettering our economy and letting grown people make their own decisions. In my shop, I have yet to hear a logical, educated argument on why marijuana is illegal, but I have heard a lot of people repeating what their parents, or someone else of no knowledge, told them. Let’s start making logical decisions, America, based on facts, not just what we heard through the grapevine.

In Carmel, a number of companies believe their workplace should reflect a lifestyle of creativity and flexibility. This is a national phenomenon where the line between work and play is becoming blurred.

A good example of this trend can be found in the Carmel City Center and Carmel Arts & Design District. Software Engineering Professionals moved from a traditional large glass and steel box to the James Building a year ago. The James Building is connected to the parking garage and is across from the Palladium. If you look up, you may catch a glimpse of burgers cooking on the built-in grills on the patio terraces. A number of SEP employees can now walk or ride their bicycles to work as the area becomes increasingly friendly to pedestrians and cyclists. The soothing green space and nearby coffee shops drew the company to the area. It is not unusual to encounter a number of team members brainstorming as they return from the SoHo Café & Gallery, only a hop and a skip away.

work from both Broad Ripple and Westfield. A number of office events have included attending a show at the Palladium, where customers experience the excitement of the area. Where before the employees were isolated in an office tower, attorney Will Kelly feels they are now part the community. Taking the lead from SEP, this spring they will have company bicycles that staff can use should they wish to do lunch in the arts district or a take a jaunt on the Monon and other multiuse paths that now make Carmel a bicycle-friendly city.

Not far away, Fat Atom’s creative juices are cooking in second floor offices overlooking downtown Main Street. Employees especially like the flexibility of an urban environment with advantages of space, where they can unplug and recharge throughout the day. They liked the area so much they started a second division just down the street called The Catapult Project.

These are just a sampling of the type of companies Carmel can expect in the future as word gets out that work and play can be successfully incorporated into an office location.

Carmel company’s app could improve efficiency, cash flow

By Kevin Kane kevin@youarecurrent.com Owners of a young Carmel company say they’ve created a program that could be a gamechanger for small-business owners.

TCS TechPro recently released a mobile device app, Field Tech Pro, intended to get companies’ service technicians out from behind their desks and working billable hours, and TechPro’s owners say their dispatch software should pay for itself in most cases.

“We had been looking at smartphones’ and tablets’ abilities to make service, in any industry, portable,” said Randy Henry, who owns TechPro with fellow Carmel residents Mike Lobue and Tim Coyne. “This gives dispatch technicians a better way to know who’s where and how to assign them.”

From a mobile device or a computer, a dispatcher can track all activity on customer orders and available technicians. When, for example, a customer calls needing a repair, a dispatcher using this software would have the ability to see the location and availability of all active technicians and assign the ticket based on these factors.

Once assigned a job, the ticket appears on the technician’s mobile device, and the app has a GPS feature to provide directions. When the technician activates the ticket and is en route, the software automatically notifies the customer and provides an estimated arrival time.

“There’s no more question of ‘Was the guy there?’ and ‘What time was he there?’” Coyne said. “This goes beyond being paperless. It can improve cash flow.”

Coyne added, in his experiences running a service company, the average time between the completion of a job and when it could be billed was three weeks. By eliminating the paperwork – specifically technicians’ timesheets – Coyne said this app allows for customers to be billed the same day or one day later, at the most.

In addition to increasing efficiency and cash flow, Lobue said another of the company’s main

goals in creating the app was to provide stateof-the-art dispatching software at a price small businesses can afford. The app can be downloaded for free on mobile devices, but cannot work without a paid service. TechPro negotiates personalized pay-per-use contracts with its customers, meaning companies using the software pay a small, predetermined amount per ticket.

Coyne said the app is perfect for small, service-based businesses, and his own experiences led to the idea.

“I looked long and hard for something like this, but didn’t find it,” he said. “So I said, ‘Forget it; I’ll create it on my own.’”

Double check, just in case GRAMMAR LESSON

By Brandie Bohney I have mentioned this before, but this column is not my sole source of income (I would be homeless and starving if it were). I also work at a local high school, and I do some freelance writing and editing. The freelance editing is the source of today’s column.

As an editor, a wide variety of documents cross my cyber desk. Frequently, these documents contain scientific or industryspecific terminology and jargon I’m unfamiliar with. When faced with these words, I have to be especially vigilant in reviewing the spelling of the unfamiliar words. In fact, the unfamiliar words probably get four times as much attention as the other words in the text because I have to exercise so much more caution to ensure I get them correct every time.

“So what?” you may be asking. Well, any time you are in a situation wherein you encounter foreign jargon or terminology, you have to do the same thing: check, double check and triple check. Those difficult words – the ones you

don’t intuitively know how to spell or even pronounce – are the ones that can spell certain doom for your document (pun intended).

Consider this: Do you ever spell a familiar word several times, and it starts to look wrong?

You know it’s correct, but it looks awful because you keep staring at it and writing it over and over and over again? Now consider how much more easily your brain could be tricked into thinking a word you aren’t very familiar with is wrong when it’s not, or correct when it’s wrong.

Yeah. That triple check is looking pretty reasonable, isn’t it?

Ironically, however, one company I work for has made my past two checks out to “The Grammer Guru.” I consider the checks evidence of why they need me.

DISPATCHES » Easy popcorn technique – You can make your own delicious, low-fat microwave popcorn using standard popping corn and a brown paper lunch bag. You’ll need one-half cup of unpopped popcorn, 1 teaspoon vegetable oil and one-half teaspoon of salt. In a cup or small bowl, mix together the unpopped popcorn and oil.

Pour the coated corn into a brown paper lunch sack and sprinkle in the salt. Fold the top of the bag over twice to seal in the ingredients. This ancient tradition continues in India BEYOND THE SUNSET

By Leonid Plotkin It is an experience akin to time travel to find yourself opposite a man who would not have been out of place in Biblical times.

The holy books of Jews, Christians and Muslims all speak of wandering holy men who have renounced home, work and family in order to dedicate themselves fully to a spiritual life. It is a tradition whose roots reach back to a time before monotheism. And for centuries, these itinerant mystics roamed the roads of the Middle East, Europe and Asia seeking enlightenment and understanding.

In most places, all this is no more. Rationalism, political extremism and religious fundamentalism left no space for such people. But in India, the ancient tradition endures. Night has fallen. I rest in a small, street-side stall sipping sweet tea. Next to me sits a Fakir – a Sufi holy man, a living link in a chain of mystical knowledge passed from master to disciple for thousands of years.

Sufism is a tradition of Islamic mysticism, which holds out the possibility of direct experience of the absolute, eternal and infinite – of God. It is a liberal and tolerant tradition, very unlike the austere interpretation of Islam that dominates places like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. In Sufi shrines, men and women are not separated. Non-Muslims are welcome. And

Local nonprofit to host Carnivale extravaganza COMMENTARY

The event is in celebration of ITA’s five-year anniversary and a fundraiser for the performing arts programs ITA offers for children and adults. This age group developed a love for buffalo wings in the ’90s. Basically, these spicy wings are chicken in Frank’s Cayenne Pepper Sauce and butter.

Ingredients: 1 pound of your favorite neat pasta (doesn’t have to be macaroni); 1 pound cubed white meat chicken; 2 cups cream; 8 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese; 8 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese; 4 ounces grated parmesan cheese; Three-fourths cup of Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Wing Sauce (or Frank’s Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce); One-fourth cup flour; One-half stick of butter; One-fourth teaspoon salt; One-fourth teaspoon ground black pepper Preparation: Preheat oven to 350 F. Grill two skinless chicken breasts then slice them one-fourth to one-half inch thick. Now cube the slices. In a medium saucepan, simmer cream and add salt and pepper, then set aside. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour, then above cream and spices. Bring to boil. Remove from heat. Add cheeses and Frank’s sauce and mix well. Place the pasta in a large bowl. Then mix in cheese/cream mixture and chicken. Spray a large casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray. Spread pasta mixture into dish. Sprinkle top with grated parmesan cheese.

Cook 30 to 40 minutes until bubbly and the top is crispy.

By Dr. Mark Fisch Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women. However, there is a gender gap when it comes to diagnosing and treating it. Did you know women are more likely to die than men after experiencing their first heart attack? The reason for this finding is due to a multitude of factors, including, but not limited to, the actual symptoms women develop and also how heart disease is diagnosed in women.

It is not uncommon for men and women to exhibit different signs and symptoms of heart attacks. Like men, women’s most common symptom is chest pain, though women tend to also report other symptoms, such as, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting and upper back pain.

In regard to diagnostic testing, an exercise EKG treadmill stress test alone is often less accurate in women than men when making the diagnosis of heart disease. One way to improve the accuracy of the test is to perform it in conjunction with some type of cardiac imaging.

An actual heart attack can be confirmed with simple tests, such as an EKG and/or a troponin blood test. These tests, along with a complete physical assessment and history by a physician, can make the diagnosis of a heart attack and quickly determine the appropriate treatment.

Signs and symptoms of a heart attack: • Stomach or abdominal pain • Crushing chest pain • Dizziness or nausea • Unexplained feelings of anxiety, fatigue or weakness – especially with exertion • Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing • Discomfort, tightness, uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes, or comes and goes • Pressure or pain that spreads to the shoulders, neck, upper back, jaw or arms • Clammy sweats, heart flutters or paleness Tips for leading a heart-healthy lifestyle: • Maintain a healthy weight • Don’t smoke • Exercise every day (even if it’s light exercise) • Eat heart-healthy foods Dr. Mark Fisch is a cardiologist with IU Health Physicians Cardiology.

By Dr. Barry Eppley Q: I am a 56 year-old man who has always had a weak chin. Could you give me some direction in what you think I need? I think the problem is more than just a short chin; my overall jaw just seems smaller. I don’t want to get a chin implant placed on the end of my jaw if it does not look right or natural.

A: Having a weaker jaw/chin in an older male always raises questions about both bone weakness and skin-sagging issues of the jowls and neck. What you need is a chin implant and neck liposuction/submentoplasty. The question is whether a preformed or off-the-shelf chin implant will work, or whether a custom implant is preferred. It is just a matter of degree and how substantial that change is.

You have horizontal, vertical and transverse (width) chin deficiency, which is common when the chin is very weak. The problem, as you have accurately pointed out, is really an overall jaw growth issue, not just a simple short chin.

This makes the entire lower face short in every dimension.

Q: I am 36 years old and have been wearing padded underwear since I can remember. I am ready to have a bottom of my own I can feel good about. This is my only insecurity and I am ready to do something about it. I

want to be able to, for the first time, fill my jeans out and not have a belly hang over them.

A: Two types of patients seek buttock augmentation. The first, and by far the most common, is the patient who simply wants to make larger what they already have. They do not really have buttock hypoplasia or underdevelopment, but want to enhance what they already have.

The second group, and the least common, is the patient who really has no buttocks at all. They are completely flat and may have resorted to padding, as you have described.

This second group is the most challenging to treat because they have little to no subcutaneous fat in the buttocks, and small gluteal muscles.

This makes the recipient site for the most common method of treatment, fat injections, very limited. Often, the patient may be quite thin and lack adequate fat donor sites. This leaves the only option of an actual silicone buttock implant. Such implants can be very effective, but they are associated with a longer recovery and other implant-related risks.

Flash forward to 2011, and the share of investors in this age group who are the most risk averse had nearly doubled to 27 percent, while the share of those who were the most risk tolerant had decreased to 31 percent. This stands in stark contrast to the risk appetite of their older peers. By David Cain What do a human being and a crocodile have in common? While it might not be a topic of conversation for your next party, it is for mine.

It might not seem like we have much in common with our waterloving friends, but there are some key similarities that can tell you a lot about how to talk to your customers too.

1. Survival-focused.

Mr. Croc makes his decisions and is sparked to action based on his own well-being. He wants to make sure he lives to see the next day, the next hour. Therefore, his instincts guide him to only be concerned with his own survival.

2. Self-centeredness. It’s all about Mr. Croc.

He’s only concerned with himself. After all, no one else will be. He has to be selfcentered to survive. If it’s not about him, he just doesn’t care.

3. Simple. Mr. Croc doesn’t overcomplicate the situation. He trusts his instincts and keeps it simple. Complex matters are well over his low-to-the-ground head, and

that’s the way he likes it. Complexity only makes decisions take longer, and that can kill Mr. Croc.

What can we learn from Mr. Croc? His reasons for action are not so dissimilar from what makes a person act. We are all self-centered, simple and survivalfocused. Every animal, including a human being, has to be self-centered to survive. We have to look out for ourselves to keep ourselves safe. We have to keep it simple and trust our instincts as they help us survive.

Marketing messages, any messages heard, have to touch on the same triggers as what rocks Mr. Croc’s boat. You have to be focused on your audience, you have to pay attention to their self-centered nature and you have to be overly simplistic. Mr. Croc might not be your customer, but his buying triggers aren’t too dissimilar.

We are all self-centered, simple and survivalfocused. Every animal, including a human being, has to be selfcentered to survive.

ValuScript Health Mart Pharmacy is owned and operated by pharmacists J.R. David and Ziad Khader, who both have experience working in hospital, retail and extended care settings. Two stocks poised to pop Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR) – Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Green Mountain Coffee Roasters to report revenue of $1.06 billion on earnings of 36 cents per share.

In each of the last four quarters, GMCR has reported double-digit year-over-year revenue growth. During that timeframe, revenue has trended higher by an average of 96.5 percent.

The company’s net income has trended higher for the past three straight quarters. The current short interest as a percentage of the float for GMCR is extremely high at 20.7 percent.

That means out of the 128.46 million shares in the tradable float, 26.49 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a massively high short-interest, so if this company can report positive results and bullish guidance,

the stock will skyrocket and short-squeeze big.

Entropic Communications (ENTR) - Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Entropic Communications to report revenue of $55.63 million on earnings of 11 cents per share. If you’re looking for a small-cap stock that’s trading within range of triggering a major breakout post-earnings, then take a hard look at shares of ENTR. This stock has been uptrending strong since bottoming in October, and it’s now within range of breaking out above some major overhead resistance. The current short interest as a percentage of the float for ENTR is very high at 17.1 percent. That means out of the 85.69 million shares in the tradable float, 14.03 million are sold short by the bears.

opinion, it makes a wall seem dull and lifeless. These same qualities, however, make it the perfect choice for almost every ceiling.

Eggshell – Literally named for its resemblance to the sheen of an eggshell, the slight shimmer of this finish is a good choice for imperfect walls. It will hide blemishes like a matte finish will, yet it is washable.

Satin – Slightly more glossy than an eggshell finish, a satin finish is often advertised as being ‘scrubbable.’ Usually, the higher the gloss of a paint finish, the more durable it will be. Satin is a perfect choice for the walls of high-traffic areas in a home.

Semi-gloss – This finish is my first choice for cabinets, doors and trim. Rarely would I recommend anything else for these interior items. Be aware, DIYers – the shinier the surface, the more evident a flaw in the surface will appear.

High-gloss – Commonly used for furniture, this shiny finish takes on an almost reflective quality. High-gloss finishes have a very dramatic look and are popular in contemporary interior settings.

Don’t freak out about Facebook’s Timeline TECHNOLOGY

By Ken Colburn What do I need to do to make sure Facebook forcing us to use Timeline doesn’t expose my personal information?

– Claudia As Facebook continues to update and improve its social networking tool, it continues to create confusion and apprehension amongst many of its users. Change is not something non-technical users are comfortable with, but if you expect it to stop any time soon, I’ve got news for you!

You don’t create something as dynamic and all-encompassing as Facebook without constantly reinventing yourself.

If you think Timeline somehow exposes information you previously had protected from the general public, I’ve got more good news for you. It doesn’t!

Timeline is simply reformatting the information you have previously posted, but retains your privacy settings.

In other words, what you posted a year ago only available to your friends is still only viewable by your friends, but in this “easier to see the past” format.

If you see items from your past you don’t want your friends to see, why did you ever post it in the first place? If it was OK for friends of friends to see the post a year ago, and YOU haven’t changed any of your privacy settings, then nothing has changed.

The most common misnomer I run across is what you see on your own Timeline is somehow going to be viewable by anyone on Facebook once this “change” occurs (not even close to true).

Facebook gives you complete control of exactly what appears on your Timeline and who can see it (friends only, friends of friends, the public, etc.), just like it did with your previous profile format.

If you are just entering the workforce and aren’t particularly proud of some of your “youthful” posts, I can understand being concerned, but it isn’t like a potential employer can

suddenly see all your past indiscretions.

Timeline is simply making it much easier to see things you’ve posted in the past (which is why I love it), but retains all your privacy settings.

Facebook even added a tool that allows you to take all your past posts and limit everything to friends only (go to “Privacy Settings,” then to “Limit the Audience for Past Posts”).

Keep in mind, pictures and posts you intended to be available to friends of friends in the past would no longer be available to that secondary audience.

Hopefully this helps you feel better about the change … Facebook has given you more tools to control your privacy than ever. It’s up to you to take advantage of them!

Shower and freestanding tub transform bathroom REMODELING

By Larry Greene Original bathroom: This home was built in 2001 in the downtown Village area in Zionsville. The owner is the first and only owner of the home.

She purchased the home knowing she was going to remodel the master bath.

According to the owner, “The design of the master bathroom was extremely poor. It was not an old house with a cramped, out-of-date bathroom like many people have in older homes.

My bathroom had tons of space, it was just not used very well. The floors were carpeted! But I bought the house despite the bathroom.”

Bathroom finish details: The design included completely gutting the old bathroom and creating a new enlarged shower enclosure and separate tub area. The new, white thermo foil stock cabinets are topped with 3-centimeter, emerald-pearl granite countertops with a square-polished edge detail. This same granite material was used to cap off the bench seat in the shower and the half wall caps. The new expanded shower includes white ceramic tiled walls in a combination of staggered, herringbone and soldier stack patterns. The shower enclosure is three-eighths-inches thick clear, frameless glass

with brushed nickel hardware.

Freestanding tub in tiled niche: The new freestanding tub is enclosed in a niche area tiled with subway tile, installed in a staggered pattern to roughly 60 inches high and capped with chair rail trim. The new tub is a white Victoria + Albert freestanding York model tub measuring 69 inches by 32 inches. The tub faucet is a Delta Dryden model deck mounted tub filler with a hand shower in a chrome finish.

Final result: The homeowner is thrilled with the result and stated, “I now have a large, stunning shower.

The freestanding tub is one of the highlights, though my favorite part of the overall design is the tile work.

Before The remodel completely changed the bathroom, which now uses space well and has beautiful finishes.”

By Bob Walter Is there anything, anywhere not – somehow – attached to God? For believers, the answer is easy: “No.” Everything was created by God, is attached to God, is finally answerable to God and ultimately (if only in eternity) glorifies God. God is in and around everything, whether we understand it or not.

Believers’ identifying quote: “Praise God!” For modernists, the answer is complex. Modernists – the philosopher modernists, we mean.

The existentialists (“thought begins with man”) and secular humanists (rights of man) generally allow for the existence of God, but draw subjective lines of opinion and confinement around what is and is not in God’s purview.

Identifying quote: “God is a matter of opinion.”

For postmodernists, the answer is irrelevant because the question is invalid: God is merely an indefinable myth for the weak minded. Everyone worships something, and postmodernists seem to worship experiential, demonstrable, situational expedience filtered through power and money, yielding an unprovable version of operable truth and reality in the here and now.

There is no “good” or “right or wrong” or even “proof.” There is only “what is” and “whatever.”

That’s it. Absent a more appropriate subspecies

identifier, most of these folks typically are identified – hailed, really – as “intellectuals.”

Identifying quote: “Don’t tell me what to think.”

I’m comfortable that all intelligence, wisdom, truth, morality, judgment, the good, the bad, the ugly – all of it – goes back to God. This is not to knock human intelligence or intellectuals, but to recognize and celebrate God’s uniquely-prospering and challenging gift to man – the brain in our head.

An old theological joke recounts how God, playing hide and seek with man, hid in the human heart figuring it would be the last place man would look. People around the world yearn to worship something, but use their “wisdom” to keep the real God at bay.

Jesus says we are to seek God (Matthew 6:33, “But first seek His Kingdom”), and the greatest commandment is to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength (Mark 12:30).

We may first feel God, sense Him, in our hearts, but it takes an engaged mind to appreciate God is attached to every part of our lives.

Right back at ya LAUGHS

By Dick Wolfsie Back pain is a major problem in this country. It is the second biggest reason people do not go to work in the morning. The first reason is not having a job.

I have a long-standing relationship with my back, but ironically, most of my problems come from sitting too long. I read somewhere that while poised at the computer, I should put my butt at the outermost edge of the chair. I tried that, slid off and almost broke my jaw on the keyboard.

Irwin, my new physical therapist, first instructed me to stand exactly like I normally do when I talk to someone. He said he preferred to observe his subjects in their natural setting.

Suddenly, I became extremely self-conscious.

I don’t know about you, but my body has a number of extremities that pretty much fall into place on their own when I’m chatting with someone. I don’t think about where to put my right leg, how to hold my head or how to position each arm during a discussion. I just start yacking away, although I do try not to put my foot in my mouth.

When I finally got myself into what I considered my normal posture, the therapist shook his head. “You lean too far to the left,” he said, which is exactly what WIBC said to

me in l995 when they fired me from my talk show. Then Irwin put me on the massage table and gingerly rotated my head and neck to assess my range of motion. “I don’t think your spine has a good relationship with your legs,” he commented. He was probably right. I was quite sure that over the years, there had been very little conversation between the two. I would have overheard it.

One suggestion he offered for improving my posture was to walk with my arms at my sides, with the palms of both hands facing to the front, opened wide and turned skyward. I tried this while I was strolling downtown later that day. It felt odd, except I did score some loose change from sympathetic pedestrians.

Finally, Irwin told me it would do my back a world of good if I imagined there was a string running through my spine that went through my head to the ceiling, and then when I walked, to also concentrate on putting pressure on my big toes. My next appointment is with a neurologist. Not for my spine, but because I walked head first into a wall.

I realize this is a sentiment usually expressed by people who wear colanders on their heads in order to keep the CIA from reading their thoughts. That, of course, is just ridiculous. The CIA does not read people’s brain waves. Queen Elizabeth does.

Anyway, I’m talking about a language-monitoring presence greater than the CIA, greater than Queen Elizabeth, greater even than the old lady down the road listening to your conversation on the party line.

I’m talking about the National Football League.

The NFL is very, very protective of its property. And this brings us to the reason people need to guard their speech.

Maybe you’ve seen the ad for the car dealership that offers customers a chance on tickets to A Really Big Football Game.

What they are doing is trying not to run afoul of copyright laws that require the NFL’s permission before you use the words “Super Bowl.”

(Oops.)

Gone are the words superintendent, superseding, superlative and insuperable. In their place, please use boss, replacement, swell and difficult.

Restaurant servers should be careful to enunciate clearly when offering soup or salad.

Now, we get to the question of what to call the Big Game.

Please select from the following synonyms for super, thanks to Thesaurus.com: glorious, incomparable, keen, magnificent, marvelous, outstanding, peerless, sensational, terrific and wonderful. Now choose from these synonyms for bowl: basin, boat, casserole, crock, dish, porringer, pot, tureen, urn and vessel.

Welcome to Indianapolis, home of the: Glorious Casserole, Outstanding Urn, Magnificent Dish or my personal favorite, Incomparable Crock.

Now, the NFL isn’t alone in this copyright protection business. Heaven help the unfortunate TV huckster who mentions “March Madness” without paying the dues. And the same goes for another aggressively-protected trademark, “American Idol.”

So, my friends, a word to the wise: Watch your language. Or, to be more specific, watch the NFL’s language, because they own it.

And keep that colander on your head.
