Residents overflow meeting to speak against mosque

By Desiree Williams news@currentincarmel.com Carmel residents arrived en masse at the Monon Community Center Jan. 22 for a Board of Zoning Appeals meeting AL SALAM to voice concerns about a proposed Islamic Life Center on 5 acres at 14120 Shelborne Rd. in west Carmel where the Al Salam Foundation wants to build a mosque.

During a public hearing, more than 30 residents spoke to the board about their opposition to the mosque, which would need special use approval to be constructed in a residential zone. Speakers said that their only point of contention is the location, not the mosque itself. Al Salam’s membership comes primarily from Carmel, Zionsville and Westfield.

The meeting room reached capacity at 300, forcing some attendees to wait outside without the chance to speak. In lieu of making a decision, the board ordered a continuance of the public hearing to allow those who weren’t able to get in a chance to speak. The

The Carmel Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously Jan. 16 to grant interim protection for a 180-year-old UPDATE home in Carmel that appeared threatened after a buyer who vowed to preserve the home backed out.

Beazer Homes withdrew its proposal Jan. 8 to build 119 empty-nester homes for a 55-andolder community at Keystone Parkway and 136th Street. Some neighbors opposed the project, which was called The Reserve at Cool Creek. As a result, Beazer was concerned the council might not approve it.

Beazer had previously reached a deal with Indiana Landmarks to preserve one of the oldest homes in Carmel on the land Beazer was going to purchase. The home at 2724 E. 136th St. is on land originally deeded to William Wilkinson in 1822. The Hull family was

the home’s residents.

“The original owners were the pioneers of Carmel itself,” said Emily Ehrgott, executive director of the Carmel Clay Historical Society.

The descendants, the Brennans, have inherited the house. They plan to sell it and

have no plans to renovate.

Carmel city councilor Ron Carter, a CHPC board member, said the goal is to create a local historic preservation district to help preserve the home, which requires council approval.

In the meantime, the CHPC board expressed concern that the Brennan family could demolish the structure and sell the land to a new buyer.

“The most important thing right how is that we get interim protection so it doesn’t get bulldozed,” Carter said.

Mark Dollase of Indiana Landmarks said his organization had promised to invest six figures to restore the house, but that deal is now off. He said he hopes the organization can give the money to someone who wants to purchase and renovate the property, but Indiana Landmarks doesn’t have the money to purchase the house at asking price.

Jury duty scam – A scam involving the threat of arrest for missing jury duty has hit Hamilton County. A victim answers the telephone and the caller says a warrant is being issued for not appearing for jury duty (or paying taxes or another offense). The caller may give the name of a courthouse employee, a deputy or a name similar to an employee. The victim is then told to pay money to avoid arrest. These calls are fake.

The City of Carmel has awarded 29 local arts organizations a combined $990,450 in the initial round of grants from ARTS the City’s 2018 Arts Grant Program. Although the name might suggest otherwise, the Newcomers Club of Carmel isn’t just for those who reNONPROFIT cently moved to the area.

“Newcomers welcome those who are new to the greater metropolitan area and those who are experiencing a change in their lifestyle and wish to engage in new activities and meet new friends,” said Bonnie McClain, who handles publicity for the club. “Membership ranges from those who joined in 1989 through 2017.

We have a membership representing 31 different states, Puerto Rico and Bermuda.”

A nonprofit social club with more than 210 members, the Newcomers Club offers more than 25 interest group activities. The groups meet every month and members can participate in as many groups as they’d like. A welcome coffee is held for prospective members each month in a Newcomer member’s home, and there is a monthly luncheon with a featured program.

“A review of the activity groups that meet each month illustrates these members are active people. They seek ways to remain updated on what is happening in the world, especially through the Current Events and Book Club groups,” McClain said. “Participation in dining out activities, attending local arts performances, exploration day trips and reaching-out projects all speak to interest in being informed and being engaged in the community.”

Although the majority of the members are from Carmel, 31 percent live in Fishers, Noblesville, Indianapolis and Westfield.

Other members are from Zionsville, Cicero, Sheridan and Tipton.

“A common story among our newbies is, ‘We moved to this area to be closer to our children or grandchildren,’” McClain said.

“Most are ladies who have had professional careers or still do but would like to broaden their friendship base. Newcomers Club is a resource that has helped them connect with friends and explore their new community.”

Coloring book promotes healing A Grief Coloring Book Using Ritual and Music to Help You Grow

Grieving the loss of a loved can be one of the most difficult circumstances to navigate.

GRIEF To promote healing, Carmel resident Elaine Voci has created a coloring book called “Resilience Art: A Grief Coloring Book Using Ritual and Music to Help You Grow.” Voci is a celebrant and facilitates a death cafe where attendVoci ees discuss mortality.

“I’m a fan of coloring books,” Voci said.

“I thought I could put ritual art and music together to help people help themselves.

The focus of the book is resilience. When we encounter loss, what builds our resilience is how we react to it. What do we do to help ourselves get stronger?”

The concept of rituals occurs in daily life and is important to the grieving process, Voci said.

“The rituals around grieving include preparing a space where you can bring a picture of your loved one or other artifacts

Voci also provides examples from her own life experiences.

“I grew up in an Italian family where my dad sang opera on Sunday mornings when he was shaving getting ready to go to church, so that music has particular significance for me,” Voci said. “Everyone has certain songs they really connect to or that are associated with the person you’ve lost.

If you bring those songs to yourself and add that simple ritual it becomes a very moving thing because then the memories are more vivid.”

The book comes out Feb. 6 and is available for pre-order at mascotbooks.com.

Amateur radio operators have any number of reasons for tuning into the hobby.

But they all have one thing in HOBBY common.

In emergency situations, they can — and do — provide life-saving services.

“Radio amateurs enjoy radio technology as a hobby. That’s the fun part. But it’s also a service — a vital service that has saved lives again and again when regular communications systems failed,” said Joe March, public information officer for the Indiana Chapter of the Amateur Radio Relay League.

“Most of the time, however, it’s the most fun you can have with a radio.

“It’s a way to talk with people around the world.”

But to do so, amatuer operators — commonly known as ‘hams’ — must be properly licensed.

On Feb. 17, the Central Indiana Amateur Radio Association will offer a free, one-day class at St. Vincent Carmel Hospital for anyone interested in obtaining a federal entrylevel amateur license. The day-long class will be followed by a 35-question, multiple choice test.

Class is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in conference room B at the hospital, 13500 N. Meridian St. Exams will be administered immediately after class. The class will review information from the Radio License Manual.

“Before anyone can get on the air, they need to be licensed and know the rules to operate legally,” March said. “Amateur radio is as old as radio itself and has been a licensed service for nearly a century, offering a pool of self-trained experts able to provide emergency backup communications.”

More than three million licensed amateurs operate radios worldwide, including 747,536 in the U.S. and 15,182 in Indiana, according to the CIARA. In Hamilton County, amateur radio operators serve with both the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services, under the auspices of the Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency, and the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, led by a county emergency coordinator.

throughout the county in their mobile units reporting ‘ground truth’ by radio, direct to the Emergency Operations Center in Noblesville and the National Weather Service during severe weather,” March said. “On numerous occasions, county warning sirens have sounded when one of them observed a tornado at or near touchdown.”

The CIARA-sponsored class at St. Vincent is open to the public. A number of medical hospital personnel have enrolled to prepare for Emergency Medical Associates needs.

“Although hams get involved in the hobby for many reasons, they all have in common knowledge of today’s wireless technologies, regulations and operating principles,” March said. “At the scene or the aftermath of a tornado, a ham may call for help by using a pocket-sized, hand-held radio where cellphone towers and power lines were knocked out of service.

“Across the country, skilled hams act as emergency communicators to render aid, whether it’s during fires, floods, earthquakes or a tornado. But most of the time, hams do what they do because it’s just plain fun.”

‘A precious gift’

Carmel nurse authors book to dispel organ donation myths

Robert Horsey has made a career of assisting donor families and recipients as they go through the heart-wrenching process of organ donation.

In November 2017, the Carmel resident published a novel titled “Gifted,” a story he hopes will dispel common myths and shed light on the importance of the topic.

“While it’s extremely unfortunate that people pass away and people lose their family members, (organ donation) is a precious gift that can be passed on to help people in need,” said Horsey, an organ recovery coordinator with the Indiana Donor Network. “If I can be a part of that directly by working with the Indiana Donor Network, it makes me extremely happy. If I can help people make that decision through my book, it’s icing on the cake for me.”

Horsey, 49, is pleased with the results since the book’s release. After reading it, his twin brother signed up to be an organ donor.

A day’s work

As an organ recovery coordinator, Horsey never knows what he’ll see in a day. He works a 24-hour shift every three days, ready to spring into action if a potential organ donor is identified anywhere in Indiana. When that happens, he travels to the site of the donor to help ensure the organ recovery goes smoothly. A family services coordinator walks the donor’s loved ones through the process.

One organ donor can save up to eight lives, and tissue can be transplanted to 75 recipients. But for the family of the donor, the lifesaving choice happens on one of the worst days of their lives. Emotions run high, Horsey said, for the families and himself.

“They understand their loved one is gone, but they have now grabbed onto this opportunity, and it’s keeping them afloat,” Horsey said. “It’s up to us as clinical bedside people to not only take care of that donor but take care of that family as well. It’s an honor to work with them.”

sometimes his shifts stretch to the 30-hour mark or beyond. But it’s all worth it, he said.

“While it’s grueling, I can tell you it’s very rewarding,” he said.

Building bonds

Horsey has worked in organ donation since 2004, when he became the procurement transplant coordinator at Mid-America Transplant in St. Louis, Mo. “Gifted” is loosely based on Horsey’s experiences in Missouri.

“Most of the movies I see about transplants are pretty inaccurate,” Horsey said. “There’s enough drama built around the donor situation. There’s really no need to overdramatize it. When you overdramatize it, you lose the beauty of it, so I decided if I was going to write this it was going to be written as accurately as possible.”

Commentary by Terry Anker In 1735, U.S. founding-era publisher Benjamin Franklin is quoted as having said in “Poor Richard’s Almanac,”: “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” By 1920, another American, Pulitzer-prize winner Carl Sandburg, took the adage to task, asserting, “Early to bed and early to rise and you never meet any prominent people.” One could assume his assertion is rooted in some evolved knowledge that only a fool would get up and work hard to find success.

There is always someone eager to give us cover for our choices. No matter the habit, vice or proclivity, there is an internet troll eager to reinforce the alternative position. Even as we destroy the existing foundations of our civil order, how does a reasonable person sift through the rubble?

Sure, we’re cool. Right? Stay up late. Sleep in. Miss school, if you’d like. Who cares?

Rules are meant to be broken. While we might argue that the world has moved in a direction where pajama pants are acceptable office attire, does this trend mean that people won’t work for a company with a dress code? Perhaps. But likewise, might said company attract those who are comfortable in trousers sporting something other than an elastic waistband? Maybe we should ask why we have offices at all. Can’t we just work from bed? Slippers are comfy.

Ours is an age of shifting standards. We challenge each basic rule as a pointless tradition. In an attempt to achieve laudable pluralism, we accept all ideologies as equivalent. But, is every approach to living deserving of equal standing, or do some achieve empirically better outcomes?

READER’S VIEW Let’s build a truly regional transit system Editor, As we revel in the news that Indy is one of 20 finalists for Amazon’s HQ2, let’s take a moment to consider one thought: Had the request for bids come out a few years ago, we probably wouldn’t have made the cut.

One of the requirements Amazon stipulated is direct access to mass transit, such as rail, subway or bus lines. The system we’ve had for decades – and still have today – wouldn’t qualify, but, fortunately, progress is under way thanks to Marion County voters, who approved a tax increase in 2016 that’s allowing the Marion County Transit Plan to be implemented. Nearly 50 miles of bus rapid transit on three lines and 70 percent more local bus service will dramatically improve Marion County’s public transit system. Route improvements, including greater frequencies, start next month.

Making Amazon’s Top 20 shows that

this progress is already having an impact, but we cannot let up. We still have a long way to go to have a truly regional transit system. As it stands now, only Marion County has embraced the transit plan. To continue to compete for projects like Amazon’s, we need a regional system – we need to make sure that discussions about expanding transit in surrounding counties bear fruit.

The good news is that the bid for Amazon has caused many people in this area to recognize how critical mass transit is to our region’s economic future. Now that we’ve got people’s attention, let’s show them how committed we are to competing for the biggest economic opportunities by building out the vision of a truly regional, 21st-century transit system.

I recently celebrated another birthday, the big four-six. No party or hoopla, but I did have several moments HUMOR where I certainly felt the love.

My actual birthday fell on Friday, which meant the usual early morning carpool, work and then a Meijer run.

But when I finally got home, my family had taken to heart my one present request, to have the house clean. True, as soon as I left, the main floor disaster reigned, but the kitchen was dish-free and the living room smelled of lemon instead of dog poop, so I took it. They do love me!

Saturday I carved out two hours between color guard drop-off and dance pickup to spend some birthday cash at DSW before heading out to dinner with Doo and my siblings-in-law. And even though the restaurant ended up being a seafood place (which made ordering challenging since I vowed long ago never to eat ocean fish while in a land-locked state) and one SIL confirmed on the way home that she has a severe allergy to shellfish (a side street off Keystone, a stretch of U.S. 31, and our toilet will never be the same), it was a fun evening. Plus, I scored a free dessert!

My weekend culminated in a college basketball game in Kentucky. I’ll admit to shedding a few tears as I drove down through dreary fog alone (my youngest became ill and had to bail), but I scrounged up a lastminute date and enjoyed both the hot dogs and the win.

Not the typical celebratory weekend, but if this birthday is any indication of the year ahead, 46 will be a good one. Peace out.

There’s only 1 mayor in Carmel Editor, Every other week, at minimum, there is a “Reader’s View” from someone beginning the article with “As the unofficial mayor of Carmel.” As a resident of Carmel, I find this very irritating. A city has one mayor, official or unofficial. He or she is elected as the CEO of the city. He has an administration called city council, members that also are elected. This is to provide the checks and balances needed to best insure the interests of the city. They serve the community through the electoral process of its citizens.

To assign a label or title like “unofficial mayor” to oneself gives the impression that you are in a position of authority or have opinions that have greater value than other citizens that have not labeled themselves. If someone wishes to use “Reader’s View” on a regular basis, so be it, but please don’t use a title to elevate your view.

Carmel has one mayor that the citizens of Carmel have elected for the past 20 years. Like him or don’t like him, but there isn’t another person that should attach the title of mayor to themselves. If this individual chooses to submit his views every week, that is the privilege Current offers. However, please discontinue referring to yourself as “unofficial mayor.”

Voice support for equal pay for women Editor, Gov. Holcomb’s 2018 Pillar III of his Next Level Agenda states, “Indiana must build the 21st-century talent required to sustain our prosperity and competitive edge as the world economy changes.” Indeed, governor, we agree! Nevertheless, Indiana ranks as one of the states with the widest wage gaps between men and women.

How can Hoosier women participate in taking Indiana to the next level when they earn only 74 percent of what a man in Indiana makes for similar work? For minority women this gap is even larger: 36 percent for black and biracial women and 44 percent for Latinas, according to the Indiana Institute for Working Families. Women lose approximately $1 million over a lifetime when accounting for fewer Social Security dollars and time spent away from work for family care. Women in the workforce are significant indicators of economic growth: • 74 percent leads to 26 percent less money to spend.

• 74 percent leads to 26 percent fewer investments for the future.

Gov. Holcomb wants talent to stay in Indiana? He needs to make sure Hoosier women are not moving to neighboring states where there is less of a wage gap for women: Kentucky at 80 percent, Illinois at 79 percent, Michigan at 78 percent and Ohio at 77 percent.

We cannot attract women to Indiana for jobs when sur-

rounding states are doing better. When Hoosier women do better, Indiana does better.

This gap is not a myth; it is an indicator of economic inequity. Wherever women work, it is necessary for them to have salaries comparable to men.

Women in Indiana are ready for pay equity, now!

State Rep. Linda Lawson and State Sen. Jean Breaux filed legislation that strengthens Indiana law that has not been updated since 1965. House Bill 1390 and Senate Bill 93 hold employers accountable and gives the Civil Rights Commission the jurisdiction to investigate and resolve complaints received by employees.

If you want Hoosier women to receive equal pay, call your state senator and representative and ask them to vote yes on House Bill 1390 and Senate Bill 93.

We must do better. This is not just a women’s issue. It’s an economic issue. It’s a societal issue. It’s a civil rights issue. Gov. Holcomb, during the State of the State, said, “It is Indiana’s time; take Indiana to the next level; transform lives.” Women are essential to take Indiana to the next level. Women are essential to transform lives. We expect better now.

READER’S VIEW Roundabouts not safe for pedestrians Editor, It would seem that the mayor and his city council have done an effective job of defeating the concept of Carmel as a walking city with their numerous roundabouts.

It is a very frightening experience to be a pedestrian in Carmel attempting to cross a street that has a roundabout. Traffic speeds through from four directions without regard for the speed limit or the idea that a pedestrian (be it a senior, child or a family with bikes) might be attempting to cross the intersecting streets. Company from out of town were nearly hit in the Range Line Road/City Center Drive roundabout when visiting the Christkindlmarkt.

The police need to patrol these roundabouts and issue speeding tickets and teach driver responsibility. Also, the pedestrian signs need flashing lights that are activated when walkers enter the crosswalks (visit Clay Terrace for examples). A few thousand dollars for safety seems like a small price to pay when hundreds of thousands of dollars have already been spent for statuary and landscaping.

Given the above, a roundabout at Third Ave. SW and City Center Drive near The Palladium seems to be a bad idea as the city would most likely be asking for a serious accident to happen given the amount of foot traffic in that area.

Experiencing the anomaly of Cuba Commentary by David Woll A week’s visit to Havana is a trip where things are really never what they quite seem, like “Alice in Wonderland,” perhaps. Suffice it INFRASTRUCTURE to say, city and country reside in a time warp, like the ’50s of the U.S., yet the people of Havana and country seemingly represent a body of genuine warmness, charm and civility, which parts of our own nation once possessed and lost in our current period of social and political correctness and rigidity, class over-classification, self-righteousness mixed in with a healthy dose of class hatred and individual atomistic narcissism.

That reminds me of what Yogi Berra once said: “Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.” But for a moment you can relive the period of American history and its warm glow during those Eisenhower years of normalcy, when couples played bridge around a living room card table, men played golf at the club and drank highballs before dinner.

The polite and truly caring society of Cuba has a more dismal physical and economic backdrop. Behind it all is a nation in poverty yet rich in natural resources with a Third World or underdeveloped, crumbling infrastructure, where wealth is essentially concentrated in the hands of the governmental elite and the military. But the two groups are synonymous because

the military controls nearly of 60 percent of the Cuban economy. Its control ranges from ownership in resorts and real estate to business, leaving little room left for any private enterprises except for a few privately licensed shops that sell primarily to tourists, of which Canadians contribute a majority in number.

It would appear that nothing much happens without the military/government not knowing about it or controlling it. The range of military control includes real estate and industry and general business activity, except for those lucky ones issued licenses to conduct trade in a quasi-capitalistic, rudimentarily fashion.

So, is there any silver lining for Cuba? Or do the Cuban people ever enjoy the pleasures of a modern society along with its accompanying social and economic problems? Perhaps if private capital became abundant and available and technology is introduced and utilized. And perhaps if government control lessens and reshapes itself to more of a support role and loosens its grip so that some form of capitalism emerges.

Phyllis Baskerville passed away peacefully this past week. In my 35 years on Channel 8, she may have HUMOR been my favorite guest. She was not someone to be toyed with—or she was the perfect person to toy with. You decide.

I met Phyllis in 2002 after doing a live TV segment in Fortville. As I headed for my car, the spunky 75-year-old woman in her pickup truck approached me and asked me to follow her home.

Minutes later we arrived at a Pentecostal church. Entering the sanctuary was heavenly. Taking up every bit of available space were thousands of classic toys, all in mint condition, and many in the original boxes.

Memories flooded back as I saw board games, wind-up toys, lunchboxes and dolls I had not seen in 50 years.

When Phyllis’s husband developed Alzheimer’s, Phyllis was overwhelmed, as many caregivers are.

“I went to a support group meeting, but that wasn’t for me,” Phyllis said. “I didn’t need someone else’s problems. I needed something else.”

That something else began with a few dolls she had, which mushroomed into so many toys that they filled several rooms.

When her husband’s condition worsened, they moved from Florida to Indy to be close to her daughters.

That’s when she decided to open a museum.

Phyllis purchased the then-vacant Fortville church and continued to hunt for toys, assisted by her daughters who religiously took Phyllis to garage sales, antique shows and consignment shops.

Her museum’s normal tour lasted 90 minutes, with Phyllis pointing out her favorites.

“See that O.J. Simpson board game? See that Gund doll?” she said. “You’ll never see anything like that again.”

She often interrupted herself to demonstrate a punching nun or to set in motion Robby the Robot.

The museum is closed, and the future of Dolly Mama’s is still to be determined.

Blatt and Fitzgerald were even roommates together in New York City after college.

“This is my first time working as a professional in Indianapolis,” said Blatt, whose mother, Serane Blatt, lives on the north side of Indianapolis. “Indianapolis is a special place for me and I always wanted to work here.”

Fitzgerald and Blatt had discussions about a directing opportunity at ATI, and their schedules finally meshed.

Blatt attended North Central for three years before graduating from high school in Chicago.

He then went to New York University as a theater major. He then toured as an actor in “Hair” for five years.

After working in regional theater as an actor for several years, Blatt got his master’s in fine arts in directing from the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York in 2016.

This is the first time Blatt has been involved in the production of this musical comedy, which is set in a middle school. However, young adults play the students.

Krall, Miller set Palladium shows editorial@youarecurrent.com The Center for the Performing Arts officials have announced that jazz star Diana Krall and comedian Dennis Miller will perform at The Palladium in Carmel.

Miller’s performance is set for 8 p.m. May 18. Miller is a standup comic, actor and talk show host who once served as anchor Miller on “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live.” His HBO show “Dennis Miller Live” won five Emmy Awards. Miller also wrote the New York Times bestsellers “The Rants,” “Ranting Again,” “I Rant, Therefore I Am” and “The Rant Zone.”

Pianist-singer Krall and her band are continuing a world tour in support of her album “Turn Up the Quiet.” The performance is set for 8 p.m. June 8. The album features interpretations of Great American Songbook classics from Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer. She has earned five Grammy Awards. Tickets start at $50.

CHS students visit Broadway

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For a group of Carmel High School Applied Music students, a trip to New York was far more than just a MUSIC chance to see the sights.

The students saw four Broadway shows: “Waitress,” “Kinky Boots,” “Come From Away” and “Once on This Island.” The students visited Radio City Music Hall and the 9/11 Museum. They attended backstage workshops as well.

“I absolutely loved the workshops we did with the Broadway performers,” junior Laney McNamar said. “We learned a dance from ‘Once on This Island,’ and once we had the steps down, the cast member we were working with pulled me up to do it alone with him, which was very cool. I also got the chance to sing a solo in front of them, which was very helpful because I received feedback on what to improve.”

Senior Hannah Paul and junior Jessy Voris found the workshop experience to be special as well.

“The backstage workshop was a highly valuable experience as I not only received feedback on my personal performance, but also had the chance to learn Broadway-

Austen fan embraces role

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Emily Bohn is a huge fan of Jane Austen literature. So much so that portraying a character from an Austen novel has been a lifelong ambition.

THEATER Finally, she’s getting the chance to fulfill it.

Bohn, an Indianapolis resident who grew up in Carmel, portrays Elinor Dashwood in Civic Theatre’s production of “Sense and Sensibility,” based on the classic novel.

Published in 1811, “Sense and Sensibility” tells the story of the teenage Dashwood sisters, who become broke and “socially vulnerable” following the death of their father in 18th century England. The play runs Feb. 2 through Feb. 17 at Civic Theatre, 3 Center Green, Suite 300.

Bohn, who began acting at a young age in summer theater camps, has longed for the opportunity to perform in an Austen production.

“I’m drawn to the story for the fact that it’s Jane Austen,” said Bohn, a 2012 Park Tudor High School graduate who has a bachelor’s degree in theater from Butler University.

The Academy of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre will present a cabaretDANCE style production of “SIMCHA” Feb. 3 to 18. It showcases Jewish culture and heritage and features a mix of Yiddish, Klezmer, Ladino and Israeli music.

The piece, choreographed by Artistic Director Gregory Hancock, was first performed in Latvia. The rehearsal space at The Academy of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre will be transformed into a black box theatre. Hancock said the cabaret-style setting gives audiences an up-close look at the performance.

“You can see the physicality more, hear the dancers breathing,” Hancock said.

The show also will feature a series of vignettes showcasing Jewish culture, including “1941,” a solo piece about a mother’s grief during the Holocaust performed by Taylar Green; “The Western Wall,” an abstract piece performed by the G2 dancers; and an untitled piece.

Background Info: This home in Lebanon was built in the 1980s. The interior was perfect for the homeowners, but the exterior of the home had a small deck and a large yard that was being underutilized.

The overall goal was to create a larger space for the family to entertain, utilizing more of the homeowners’ backyard and making it easy for them to maintain.

1. The biggest transformation came from removing the deck and a large tree in the backyard, which created enough space to add a large, stamped-concrete patio that utilized more of the backyard.

2. Having the extra space on the large patio allowed the homeowners to add more outdoor furniture without compromising space.

3. Building a pavilion structure with a ceiling fan created a comfortable shaded area for entertaining.

4. The pavilion also created a space for the homeowners to add a portable fire pit.

5. Light fixtures were added to the structure so it could be enjoyed in the evening hours.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The original deck on the home was small and had limited shaded space for the homeowners to entertain. The deck needed regular maintenance and upkeep. The backyard was very large, and a majority of it was not being utilized to its full potential.

Be in the moment Commentary by Lorene Burkhart I’ve noticed that the old idea of being in the moment — when you or your companion are fully engaged with each SENIORS other — has turned into electronic time together. Young people even text each other when they are in the same room or car. They will discover that electronics will not replace the “being in the moment” of a kiss or embrace. At least, not yet. Maybe with robots?

As we age, staying in the moment becomes an issue as minds drift and wander into unknown territory. But let’s stay with the idea of creating moments. As servicebased businesses such as hotels and restaurants strive to create and retain customers, the really smart ones create moments that cause us to return.

For instance, I recently stayed overnight in a new hotel that had done its homework.

The moments that would cause me to return included the charging station next to the bed, the bath soap with “bubbles” on one side that would keep it from sliding away and the placement of reading lights. They also provided “goody” bags at checkout that contained a bottle of water, apple and gra-

nola bar. This place will keep my business.

Life-changing moments are sometimes unexpected, such as a child telling you that you are pretty, a church pastor who sends you a handwritten note congratulating you on your recent achievement, or a friend who sends you a surprise gift. We recall with pleasure how we felt when these happened. So, let’s turn the tables and create these moments for others. The opportunities are all around you. The requirement to make it happen is to think of others instead of yourself.

Recently, I was having a late breakfast in a casual sit-down restaurant. The young lady who waited on me told me her name.

I commented on it being special and asked her if she felt special. She replied, “I do now.” She thanked me when I left. Such a small effort to lift another person.

Now is a good time to decide to create moments for others.

As a profesGRAMMAR GUY sional grammarian and amateur vegetable trend forecaster, take this hot tip: You’re going to want to put all your summer stock in Brussels sprouts.

And it’s spelled Brussels sprouts, not brussel sprouts. You could theoretically have one Brussels sprout, I suppose. Even though they originated in the Mediterranean region, Brussels sprouts gained popu-

larity across Europe, especially in Belgium, where they received their geographical moniker. And yes, I capitalized the “b” in Brussels sprouts.

For that matter, what about the “f” in French toast? French fries certainly don’t always get the capital treatment. In the United Nations of foods, there’s not much capitalization consistency. Will the delegation from Switzerland be offended if Swiss cheese isn’t capitalized?

Sizing up Mount of Temptation Commentary by Don Knebel A monastery suspended from the side of a mountain near Jericho memorializes a famous story about Jesus. It also suggests that perhaps the story should TRAVEL not be taken too literally.

According to the New Testament, after Jesus had been baptized in the Jordan River he went into the desert to meditate. After 40 days of fasting, the devil took him to an “exceedingly high mountain,” where he could see all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor, and offered him control of those kingdoms if Jesus became a devil worshipper. Jesus refused.

As early as the first century, Christian hermits began living in a network of about 40 natural caves on the side of a 1,200-foot mountain northwest of Jericho. In about 326 A.D., after Emperor Constantine had declared that Christianity was legal in the Roman Empire, he sent his mother Helena to identify sites mentioned in the Bible.

She concluded that the mountain with the caves was where the devil had tempted

Jesus. Based on Helena’s identification, fourth century monks built a monastery on the mountain near the ruins of a second century B.C. fortress erected by the Maccabees. The monastery was destroyed in 614 when Persia took control of the area from the Byzantine Empire. When the Crusaders captured the area in 1099, they erected two churches near caves, by then associated with the temptation of Jesus. In 1895, a Greek Orthodox religious order erected a cantilevered monastery half way up the side of the mountain, now known as the Mount of Temptation.

Since 1998, a cable car has run from the ruins of the ancient city of Jericho to the monastery, where visitors can eat lunch and get a spectacular view of the Jordan River Valley, the Dead Sea and the mountains of Moab in nearby Jordan.

DISPATCHES Paint color and home value – When Zillow.com examined the effect that colors had on the closing prices of more than 32,000 recently sold homes, it discovered that the color of paint used on the walls can add or subtract thousands of dollars of value. The Zillow analysis found that muted blues and grays add the most value, while warm colors including reds, oranges and yellows reduced a home’s value the most.
