Debate over gas station at 146th Street and Gray Road continues

By Nina Johnson • news@currentincarmel.com Debate over development of the southeast corner at 146th Street and Gray Road continued during the Carmel City Council’s first public hearing of the year.

Anderson-based developer L & Q Realty has requested rezoning 4.59 acres of land from residential to business. Rezoning would accommodate a proposed Ricker’s gas station and convenience store. Approximately seven acres would remain as residential and include a tree preservation and dry retention buffer for local residences.

The proposal includes a number of commitments to increase the station’s neighborhood appeal. The building will be one story, faced with stone and brick. The total number of pumps has been decreased from 10 to eight.

Ricker’s is also proposing a double containment system to safeguard the water supply. Scimia stated station spills average no more than 15 gallons while Ricker’s detention design would “protect surrounding areas from 8,000 gallons.”

Turning lanes are planned within the property and designed to prevent traffic buildup in the nearby intersection. Scimia stated city engineers predicted “a slight increase in traffic, but no adverse level of traffic change.”

In November, the special studies committee voted 3 to 1 in favor of Ricker’s proposal despite a petition of almost 200 signatures opposing it. In December, the planning commission voted 5 to 4 to forward the request to the city council.

Dozens of residents attended the city’s public hearing to oppose Ricker’s plan.

Woodfield Homeowners Association President Cesare Turrin stated that, despite Ricker’s commitments, a gas station posed a threat to water quality, traffic safety and property values. Turrin cited an estimated $100,000 value loss per home according to a local realtor.

Resident Steve Dauby said neighbors would approve an office development.

Resident Steve Steiner announced Ricker’s safety record included not only trash violations but also crime. He stated that 6 percent of all robberies occur at convenience stores. In September, a police officer interrupted the robbery of a Ricker’s in Lawrence.

Resident Dan Mauwen supports the proposed Ricker’s.

“This is Carmel,” Mauwen said. “It’s a slap in the face to the civil servants of this community to think that there’s going to be crime at a gas station.”

Attorney Scimia insisted the proposal “fits the City’s desired character for new development.” However, the city’s C3 Plan 2009, which is a comprehensive plan that establishes what can and cannot be built on a piece of land, does not address 146th Street or Gray Road in its list of seven “critical corridors.”

“This property has been subject to several prior rezoning requests,” Scimia explained. Proposals have ranged from small office and retail complexes to multi-family condos. “Something’s going to have to be developed here sooner or later,” he said.

The ordinance was assigned to the Land Use, Annexation & Economic Development Committee to be discussed at its Jan. 22 meeting.

Audrey Kaul, a fifth grade student at Prairie Trace Elementary, was recently named a finalist after making a case for her school in a national video contest held by Scotties Facial Tissue.

Scotties Trees Rock contest asked third, fourth and fifth graders from across the nation to submit a video on their school’s behalf. In the video, the children needed to illustrate the importance of trees and why their school is deserving of the contest’s grand prize in three minutes of less.

The contest’s grand prize of $10,000 will be put toward landscaping and sustainability at the winning child’s school. In addition, the child will receive $5,000 for their family, a trip to the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone National Park and an electronic tablet.

What happened: Public Hearing, Rezoning of property at 146th and Gray Road What it means: L & Q Realty, owners of 4.59 acres on the south east corner of the intersection, requested rezoning from residential to business. The proposed development includes a 24/7 Ricker’s gas station and convenience store.

The plan includes a green space buffer between the station and nearby residents. “There’s more than a football field between this development and any adjacent neighbor,” stated L & Q’s lawyer Joe Scimia.

During a public hearing, several residents of Woodfield subdivision and adjacent properties requested a rejection of the rezoning. Many residents expressed concerns regarding road safety, water quality and property values.

Scimia suggested that residents have a history of rejecting proposals for this property. Woodfield Homeowners Association President Cesare Turrin disagreed and countered that residents were open to the city “approving development that does not negatively impact residential property values.”

What happened: Public Hearing, Hunter’s Creek streetlights What it means: An unresolved petition regarding the installation of Hunter’s Creek streetlights was referred to the Utilities, Transportation and Public Safety Committee. The committee’s first opportunity to discuss this issue was during its meeting yesterday.

During a public hearing at the Dec. 17 council meeting, Hunter’s Creek residents Rick Wright and Don Sentir requested the council reject this ordinance.

What's next: The ordinance has been assigned to the Utilities, Transportation and Public Safety Committee.

What happened: Progress on Community Services Smartphone App What it means: Councilor Ron Carter expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of a project to create a community services website and app. Carter described an app that would allow residents to report concerns such as potholes or code violations using their smartphone.

What's next: Carter encouraged Community Services to complete this project so that “quality of life (concerns) in the city get taken care of in a way that is efficient and effective.”

Buzan has a servant’s heart Commentary by Jeff Worrell It’s been a really long time. That is what everyone says when I ask them how long. Jim Burrell said, “Gosh Jeff, I know it’s been more than 10 years, and probably longer than that.” Judy Hagan couldn’t come up with a specific but said, “I know he has been doing it since before 1999.”

And Nick Kestner when asked, shrugged his shoulders and said, “Heck I can’t remember for sure but it’s been a long time.” So it is clear, Rick Buzan has been instrumental in helping a special local charity for a very long time. I surmise the reason nobody really knows how long it has been is because he does it with great humility and very little fanfare. Just the kind of guy who should be highlighted in this column.

Carmel Rotarian and good guy Rick Buzan is a key fundraiser for MAMA’s Cupboard. He takes on the task every November and December, collecting funds through the Rotary Club of Carmel. Some might see it as a tradition; he has been at it so long. Every week, encouraging Rotarians to reach into their pocket and pull out some green. Amazingly, every Rotarian still calls him a friend, even when his hand is out.

The only person who really knows for sure how long Rick Buzan has been raising money for

MAMA’s Cupboard is Rick. But, instead I asked executive director Brenda Garrod. The state of the Fourth Estate Commentary by Luci Snyder Congratulations! If you started to read this column, you undoubtedly are one of a shrinking percentage of Americans that can call themselves informed citizens.

Why else would you begin an article about the Fourth Estate, or even care about it?

The term Fourth Estate is attributed to Edmund Burke (late-1700s,) but it was in use long before that time. While the meaning has continued to shift, in America it means the media (print, television, radio and now, the Internet.)

Our founding fathers, in creating a new order in which the common man both created his own government and determined its course, realized that unless the common man knew the facts and could determine the truth, he could not make the necessary choices, vote and control his fate.

That is why, as with lawyers, there exist certain privileges given to members of the press for protection of their sources so that truth cannot be suppressed by the powerful.

Sounds perfect. And for years, this was understood and practiced along with the idea that the job of the reporters and writers was to get us the truth, the facts of the matter and only the facts.

If they had opinions, they would confine those

opinions to the editorial pages.

No longer. What happens when a supposedly free and independent press moves from reporting to advocacy? Not only have we seen that facts go unreported but entire stories are ignored and statements are altered to fit the point of view of the news outlet.

Think Benghazi, Fast and Furious and altered 911 calls.

We the people; it’s an iconic phrase. We the people created our government. We the people invited others to come and share the dream. We the people not only defended our own country, but also proudly defended the freedom of others.

Thomas Jefferson said, “… Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government.” But in order to do our job, we the people require a Fourth Estate that gives us truth, and if it is not doing its job perhaps we should take a good, long look at the privileges it enjoys. Perhaps we should demand accountability.

Senate Bill No. 189 is being heard by a state education committee and is slated for a vote this week. If the bill moves out of committee, it will then be heard and voted on by both the House and Senate. If the bill passes, it will go into effect on July 1 of this year.

State senator weighs in on superintendent’s resignation – Last month, Dr. Jeff Swensson, superintendent of Carmel Clay schools, informed the school board that he would be resigning on June 30, 2013. Delph was quick to weigh in on the unexpected announcement. “It would be my hope that the Carmel school board and Dr. Swensson would revisit (his resignation) and that he would reconsider his decision.

Quite frankly, I hope that the teachers in Carmel would rethink it as well,” Delph said. “I think Dr. Swensson has a very level head on his shoulders, loves the community, loves the school system, loves the students, and I hope they would make another run at working together and working through their differences.”

Opinion Let our schools decide the route

Keeping the peace It is our position that lawmakers should reconsider the rezoning of the southeast corner of 146th Street and Gray Road for commercial use. The most recent proposal to build a gas station/convenience store on the wooded corner across the street from the historic Gray Friends Church is stirring up rage among neighbors. And rightly so. The proposed construction project is generating concerns for the environment, as well as creating a fear of potential crime often associated with convenience store businesses.

Not to mention the surge in traffic that would make an already dangerous intersection even more deadly.

Common sense dictates that the gas station purchase a location up the street at 146th and Hazel Dell Road in an area already zoned for business and equipped with greater accessibility.

For years, safe neighborhoods and good schools seemed to be enough to draw and maintain residents to our quaint, quiet north side. There is good reason people choose to live in bedroom communities as a respite from the rigors of city life. While an attractive source of tax revenue for the city, a gas station does not exactly make an attractive gateway to the currently peaceful, beautiful wooden suburban neighborhoods.

Traditionally traditional Commentary by Terry Anker Reminded of the erstwhile George Bailey crying out that he’d lost Zuzu’s petals, I wonder if the traditions carefully crafted in our own family will endure or quietly disappear.

Would, if asked, our progeny identify seasonal traditions that have come to have meaning to them? And if so, would those named correspond with those intended by we parents at inception? Would the long valued and treasured patterns from my own childhood be lost as merged with those of my spouse and still again those derived from our own marriage?

Remembering the most direct path to a direct answer is a direct question, “So children,” I queried, “What if any do you believe to be our family holiday traditions?” Without hesitation and in near unity, they responded that they took great value in the routine, designed to keep them away from the tree on Christmas morning, of sleeping on the floor of my wife and my bedroom. They didn’t speak to Midnight services, copious decorations or

receiving gifts. The tradition they’d found most meaningful was one that we didn’t even consider a tradition! Surprised by the response – especially in the consistency and conviction of answer – I listened as the boys recalled memories from one holiday to the next, of nights in sleeping bags, surrounded by dogs and Cheetos. They were right, this silly little pattern had become a tradition. And, it had become one that mattered – not just to them, but to me too.

So this year, when we put away the last of our midnight snacks and extinguished all the lights, our bedroom found a 16-year-old just now taller than me, his 12-year-old brother not far behind, a happy dog, and a very content Mom and Dad. It’s not a grand tradition, but it’s ours and we love it.

Today’s cover story about giving high-performing schools more latitude in determining the course of curriculum is something that we expect will generate a lot of discussion during the coming months. As you might expect, we have an opinion, and it’s this: Do it. We believe the state should permit the higher-achieving institutions the opportunity to satisfy mandated requirements, but to do so, perhaps, in more creative ways. Our take is this: If the assignment deals with civics, for example, why not make it one that encompasses all manner of courses; this would include everything from social studies to English to math and science, among others. It would spur educators, and, therefore, their students to stretch, to get out of their comfort zones and to teach and learn in different ways. There is a lot to be said for “building it here” and keeping the state Dept. of Education out of the local level.

Can’t find fault with Republic Editor, Unlike Mayor Brainard, I wouldn’t be too upset with Republic Trash over the Dec. 26 no pick-up. Conditions were terrible that day with snowfall, blizzard conditions making visibility poor, roads and residential streets slow-going or treacherous. All TV reports I saw/heard were telling people to stay off the roads to avoid more accidents and vehicles getting stuck in snow.

Imagine all the vehicles trying to stop or bypass trash vehicles every time they stopped. Once stopped, some smaller vehicles would have a hard time moving straight again, or would have gotten stuck in front of trash vehicles.

I completely understood Republic not getting out. Other than the fact that Mayor Brainard says Republic failed to provide written notice,

But, Carmel City offices were closed that day due to weather situation .... “except for essential employees.” The Nancy Heck Letter to that effect stated that “Snow plowing equipment will continue to keep main and secondary roads cleared as much as possible and after the majority of the snow has fallen will begin an all city plow.” Snow didn’t stop until the afternoon. So, residential streets would not have been touched. I don’t think Republic being out that day was essential or safe.

Shame on the mayor

Editor, Shame on the mayor and his office for attempting to reprimand Republic Waste for pulling its drivers off the streets in the middle of a BLIZZARD WARNING. I manage truck drivers for a living and made the exact same decision. Decisions like these are made with only the drivers’ safety in mind and nothing else. I would assume Republic hires only the safest

drivers, however they have to take into account all of the other idiot drivers on the road who drive too fast for the road conditions.

Kudos to Republic for making the right decision to protect its employees, and shame on the Mayor for losing touch with reality.

An invested, caring public Commentary by Christian Sorrell It has always seemed to me that the stereotype surrounding local government is that it is something to be overlooked or forgotten by the larger public, something not worth following. Shows like “Parks and Recreation,” a comedy that follows Indiana government employees, portray public hearings as a time when city employees are forced to put up with the town’s most outof-touch individuals and craziest characters.

While this makes for funny situations and a funny show overall, I have found that, at least in Carmel, nothing could be further from the truth.

Last week’s public hearing on the proposed gas station at 146th Street and Gray Road was proof that, not only are many Carmel residents paying attention to their local government, they are actively participating in it. Members of homeowner associations came up with calculated and constructed presentations complete with Powerpoints and laser pointers while other residents simply put in their two cents before returning to their seats. One Carmel resident even did the bravest thing of all: he voiced an unpopular opinion amidst a group of those who thought and believed differently than he. As the only resident willing to support the proposed gas station during the hearing, the man publicly brandished himself an outcast, even joking that

he was speaking “at the risk of having (his) tires slashed after the meeting.”

It was in that moment that I realized how beneficial it is to have an invested and informed public actively being a part of local government.

While we all love to complain about something after the fact, it takes a bit more of an investment to be informed enough to voice your opinion about something before it happens, potentially changing the future of not only that specific proposal, but of the city going forward.

Today, many people are pessimistic, jaded and, perhaps worst of all, apathetic to all things government and politics related, and maybe they always have been, but there is really nothing quite like seeing people stand up for what they believe in. Whether the topic is nearby construction or something as vitally important as civil and human rights, one thing is clear: Caring in any and all of its forms – caring about your city, caring about your family, caring about your rights, caring about yourself and caring about others – is a vital component of any democracy.

Keeping abreast of the busts Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’m not sure why, but for some reason bust size has been front and center in my recent conversations. Let’s explore further, shall we?

It all started a few days ago when I learned a friend of a friend’s brother’s ex-roommate’s wife had successfully undergone breast augmentation. I have considered the surgery, so I’m always curious as to the cost and recovery and overall outcome of anyone who has actually had the nerve to go through with it. The gal in question had a wonderful experience; she had little to no down time (important when one has children and/or a job) and obviously saw immediate, big results. You go, girl!

Several days later, I found myself not watching the Colts game but rather discussing the pros and cons of plastic surgery with the two women next to me. We focused mainly on the brazier region, though we tossed in tummy tucks for good measure. (And before you accuse me of hating on Pagano, know that any woman who has borne children has considered at least for a moment “fixing” the often-times disastrous physical aftermath of pregnancy and nursing, and when given a choice between “first and ten” and “liposuction,” she’s going to opt for the lipo.) Anyhoo, turns out both of them have also thought about some extra padding up top.

Money is the biggest factor holding them back,

especially when they think about all the better uses of a few extra grand.

The boob trilogy ended with my annual mammogram yesterday, and for some reason, the procedure was much “twistier” and “tuggier” than I remember. My technician was lovely, but the squashing was far more pronounced this time.

I had to wonder if my small size was the cause.

Surely having more to work with would make the scanning easier? Of course, more surface area would mean more cold steel pressed up against me. Um, I’ll pass. Regardless, I was less tolerant of the screening and came home feeling slightly man-handled. At least buy a girl a drink first!

So the chest area has been at the forefront of my life lately. Typically this only happens during swimsuit season when I see two of my sisters looking fabulous thanks to their own surgical C-cup plunges. What can it all mean? Is it just more acceptable and common to talk about plastic surgery these days, or is someone trying to tell me I should reconsider a little “enhancement” myself? I don’t know, but I’ll be sure to keep you abreast of the situation. (I’ve been trying to work that line in since this article began!) Peace out.

There is one thing my wife is never late for: movies. She is convinced that there will be traffic, no place to park, and it will be sold out.

None of this is ever true, yet we leave early and end up sitting in a totally empty theater, with a huge bag of popcorn, looking at commercials for 20 minutes, waiting for the previews. Which Mary Ellen loves.

I hate previews. I can’t give you one logical explanation why. I dislike them so much that I sometimes sneak into a different movie and watch for a few minutes while I wait for our film to begin. Mary Ellen thinks that’s like a preview. Sorry, not the same.

Last week, my wife and son wanted to see “The Hobbit” at 5 p.m. At 4, Mary Ellen announced she and Brett were leaving early to ensure they got a good seat, but I wasn’t falling for it. “It’s a Thursday afternoon; no one will be there, so you go ahead,” I told them. “I’ll meet you there. Keep your cell phone on, and you can text me what row you are sitting in.”

“One ticket for “The Hobbit,” please, the 5 o’clock show,” I told the ticket seller when I arrived at exactly 5:10. I had timed this perfectly.

“There’s no Hobbit at 5,” said the young man, “but we have a 5:30 in 3-D.” I couldn’t believe Mary Ellen messed up the www.currentincarmel.com

times. Oh, well. I grabbed my3-D glasses and walked into the theater. It was a packed house, so I didn’t see her. I sent a text.

“Where r u guys?”

“Eighth row, dead center. Where r u?”

“I don’t c u.”

“Meet me at the snack bar,” Mary Ellen said.

I waited by the popcorn machine. Another text from Mary Ellen. “Glendale theater lobby not that big. Where are you?”

“I am at United Artists on 96th Street, where we usually go.” (I would have added OMG, but I am 65 years old.)

This was the biggest mix-up in our marriage since our wedding day in Chicago in 1980. I was at the Ambassador East Hotel having a few drinks before the ceremony. But where was everybody else? At the Ambassador West, that’s where.

I should have read the invitation more carefully.

When we all met at home a few hours later, they made fun of me. They said that going to the wrong theater was proof that I was spacier and more absent-minded than ever. Of course, I vehemently denied it.

Comedy by Jeff Daniels hits Buck Creek stage news@currentinwestfield.com

Whether you are a fan of deer hunting or not, you’ll enjoy the Soady clan in Jeff Daniels’ “Escanaba in da Moonlight.” Opening Jan. 25 and running through Feb. 3 at Buck Creek Playhouse, 11150 Southeastern Ave., Indianapolis, you can join the fun and hilarity without the long drive up north.

The story is narrated by Albert Soady, the patriarch, played by Ken Ganza. His two sons join him at the Soady Deer Camp, located “north of the Mackinaw Bridge and just south of heaven.” It’s just the guys here, doing what guys do at the start of hunting season.

Albert’s oldest son, Rueben, played by Joe Siefker, is a dim hunter slouching into middle age, ostracized by the men in his family and the children of the town of Escanaba for his annual inability to bag a buck. Rueben joins his father, his brother Remnar, played by Stefan U.G. LeBlanc, and eccentric family friend Jimmer Negamany from Menominee, played

by Tim Staggs, at the Soady deer camp for their yearly, alcohol-soaked ritual of tall tales and one-upmanship.

Albert says of his younger son, “Remnar turned out to be pretty much what you’d expect from somebody who went by the name of Remnar.”

Remnar is wildly enthusiastic about hunting season.

“It’s like Christmas, with guns!” he proclaims.

Jimmer was once abducted by aliens and spent a weekend in “shpashe.” Rueben has a bigger problem since he has never shot a buck, and is ridiculed by the entire population of the town of Escanaba. He hopes that this year he will break the curse and bring home a trophy buck with the help of his Ojibwa wife, Wolf Moon Dance, played by Cerissa Marsh.

Otherworldly forces conspire to keep the Soady men from achieving their goals.

When Ranger Tom of the Dept. of Natural Resources (Dennis Karr) arrives on their doorstep, the Soadys know that their evening is about to become stranger still, and Rueben’s hopes of living down his reputation as “Da Buckless Yooper” are all but dashed.

‘The Other Dream Team’ • Not Rated, 91 minutes Commentary by Chris Lloyd During a slow week for new video releases, you might want to take time to check out “The Other Dream Team,” a scrappy little documentary about the Lithuanian national basketball team.

Playing in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, the Lithuanians did not prove much of an actual challenge to the better-known Dream Team, which consisted of American NBA stars like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

(The U.S. beat them 127-76.) But, the team from Lithuania, which had for decades been absorbed as part of the Soviet Union, made history playing again as a sovereign nation, winning the bronze medal in the process.

Director Marius A. Markevicius keeps the pace zippy, mixing archival footage of basketball

games, news reels of Lithuanians marching for their independence as the Iron Curtain fell, plus contemporaneous interviews with the players and their opponents. Some are familiar faces – like Arvydas Sabonis and Sarunas Marciulionis, who both went on to productive NBA careers – while many others we’re meeting for the first time.

It’s an often thrilling portrait of young men who were playing for their country at a time when it was shrugging off the shackles of totalitarianism. They were living the real dream.

Ingredients: • 6 skinless, boneless chicken breasts • 1 (10.75 ounce) can low-sodium chicken broth • 3/4 cup apricot preserves • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce • 1 tablespoon cornstarch • 1 tablespoon water Directions 1. Spray a large skillet with nonstick cooking spray. Brown chicken in heated skillet.

2. Add chicken broth, jam and soy sauce.

Simmer for 20 minutes or until chicken is done (no longer pink in the center).

3. Remove chicken from skillet. Add 1 tablespoon cornstarch and 1 tablespoon water to sauce to thicken (equal amounts more of each if you like it thicker). Return chicken to skillet and turn to coat thoroughly with sauce. www.allrecipes.com

Chewy peanut butter brownies Ingredients: • 1/2 cup peanut butter • 1/3 margarine (softened) • 2/3 cup white sugar • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar • 2 eggs • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt Directions: 1. Grease a 9” by 9” baking pan. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Cream together peanut butter and margarine in a medium-sized bowl. Next, slowly but surely blend in brown sugar, white sugar, eggs and vanilla, mixing the ingredients until they reach a fluffy consistency. Then combine flour, baking powder and salt and stir into the peanut butter mixture until the contents are blended.

3. Bake the contents for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven. If the top of the treat springs back when touched, it’s done. Let the chewy peanut butter brownies cool and then cut into 16 squares. www.allrecipes.com

If your New Year’s resolutions include improving your health, there are important habits you can adopt to help keep you on track. The top three healthy habits for everyone are: Exercise regularly – The American Heart Association recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week. Aerobic exercise is generally recommended, and adults are encouraged to add weight/resistance training and stretching to their program.

Eat healthy – Be sure your diet includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. Avoid foods high in salt, sugar and fat. Watch portion sizes and avoid snacking.

Get adequate sleep – Adults typically need between seven and nine hours of sleep nightly.

Avoid meals and exercise close to bedtime.

Staying healthy this year also begins with the right preventive care. General preventive health guidelines for women and men include: Women • Schedule an annual check-up with your primary care doctor.

Business How do you file an accident claim?

Commentary by Jamie Ianigro Question from Samuel B. from Carmel: I saw a minor fender-bender yesterday in a roundabout on my way to work, and I realized I have no idea what I’m supposed to do if I have to file an auto claim. What should I know?

Response from Jamie Ianigro: Being in an automobile accident, no matter how minor, is a scary thing. Your independent insurance agent should be able to provide you with a card to keep in your glove box that outlines everything you need to do if you are in an accident. Here is what we recommend.

1. Take a deep breath and assess the situation.

Get your vehicle and passengers out of further harm if the vehicle is still operable.

2. Make sure no one in your vehicle needs immediate medical attention. Next, check the occupants of any other vehicle involved.

3. Call the police. It doesn’t matter how minor the accident. Having a police report filed will make your claim process much smoother.

4. Exchange insurance information and record the details. Make sure the other driver’s insurance is not out of date. Get their phone number, address, license plate number and the make and model of their car.

5. Use your camera phone to take pictures of your car from every angle and of any

damage.

6. Obtain a copy of the police report and call your independent agent to file a claim.

Driving without insurance coverage in Indiana is illegal and a great way to end up with a suspended license or serious financial problems. The starting point for insurance in Indiana is the required state minimum coverages. The minimums are $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage. The current cost of medical expenses and auto repairs make it clear that those amounts are not going to get you very far when it comes time to settle a claim. They also provide you zero protection from motorists that drive around without insurance or with the inadequate state minimum insurance.

I recommend limits of $250,000 per injured person, $500,000 per accident and $100,000 for property damage with an endorsement to protect you from uninsured and underinsured motorists. You can also get a discount by packaging these policies together with your homeowner’s policy. Let me know if you have any further questions about this and drive safely.

Relive the past in the historical present Commentary by Jordan Fischer Question: After the “myself” issue – how about “her and me” or “him and I?” And as another issue, why on earth do sportscasters refer to past events in the present tense? – Nancy Blackwell Answer: Since there are football games going on all around me as I try to write this column, I think I’ll tackle your second question today, Nancy.

The rhetorical tense you’re referring to is called historical present, or dramatic present. It is used, as you’ve pointed out, to narrate events which have already happened as though they are ongoing. Journalists use this technique quite frequently when writing headlines: “House burns out of control” versus “House burned out of control.” The historical present tense gives the headline a greater sense of being immediate, “breaking” news, even though the event may have happened the day before.

The historical present tense is used frequently in accounts of history in an attempt to place the reader or audience “in the action,” so to speak.

Ken Burns’ fantastic documentary on the Civil War uses the historical present to wonderful effect. “If Robert E. Lee loses the siege of Petersburg,” Burns’ narrator might say, “the South has all but lost the war.” Although the events being described happened more than 150 years ago, the historical present tense allows Burns to

maintain the sense of drama for his audience which actual observers of the conflict would have felt.

Sportscasters, I imagine, use the historical present for much the same effect (Although I have heard speculation that they employ it out of laziness, as using past tense would often require a too-hefty mouthful of words.) Being a Butler grad, I’ll offer you an example from the university’s first try at the NCAA basketball championship against Duke University. As the clock ran down, Butler University sophomore Gordon Hayward took a half-court shot which would have won the game for his team. This is the clip ESPN plays during every Butler basketball game anymore. Here is what the sportscaster says: “If Hayward makes the shot, the Bulldogs win their first NCAA championship. If not, they go home to Indianapolis as runners-up.” Of course, the shot was off by some ridiculously minute degree – and we had to suffer another championship to Duke – but the historical present tense allows us to relive that heart-stopping moment as the ball pinged off the backboard over and over again. Truth, proof, prayer, and privacy Commentary by Bob Walters A lamentable yet inescapable fact of modern life is that non-believers and non-sharers of faith forthrightly reject meaningful public prayer.

Just read the relentless, frequent and predominantly faith-rejecting mainstream media commentary. Take your prayer life into a closet and stop annoying the rest of us while you’re making a fool of yourself praying to an invisible god, we are scolded. After all, it is piously (and ironically) claimed, Jesus said so.

Congregants in the prayer-bridling “commentariat” cite Jesus’s words in Matthew 6:6: “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.”

Elsewhere Jesus instructs those He has healed or who have witnessed His miracles to “tell no one.” In His beautiful prayers at Gethsemane (John 17) before His arrest, trial and crucifixion, Jesus withdraws (Mark 14:32-35) to pray privately to His Father.

Hence, Go pray in private. Let’s examine that.

In Matthew 6:6, Jesus is adamantly telling the crowd not to pray as the hypocrites in the temples, who pridefully prayed loudly for their own glory, not reverently for God’s. Then, in Matthew 6:11, Jesus teaches the humble Lord’s Prayer, which begins with “Our Father” – note

the plural, not singular, “Our” address of this most famous of prayers. We pray to be in relationship with God the Father through Christ our Lord in the Holy Spirit … and with each other. The entire Kingdom is involved. Even “private” prayer is a community thing.

Jesus’s mission on earth was to reveal and seal mankind’s salvation, not to trumpet that He was the Son of God. Jesus knew that His miracles could overshadow His mission: restoration of mankind’s divine fellowship, not temporal tricks and comfort. So He often said, “Don’t tell.” Jesus’s actions, example, teaching, life, death, resurrection – now joined with scripture, prayers and faith – are the only, and in my mind entirely sufficient, “proof ” we have.

Yes, Jesus regularly prayed by Himself. But His primary instruction after His resurrection is in Matthew 28:19: “ … go and make disciples of all nations.” That is anything but an entreaty for exclusively private faith and prayer.

Even the smallest faith and prayer can grow into eternity. Why would anyone argue to keep that truth private?

The fabric of design Commentary by Vicky Earley A fabulous designer fabric is a perfect inspiration for a beautiful interior space. Most homeowners are quite comfortable with mixing a pattern with a solid, but the thought of adding more strikes design cowardice … and that is where so-so and polished part ways.

The process of combining complementary elements taken from different sources typically starts with one stunning textile.

There are times when the most beautiful fabrics come packaged with a breath-taking price tag.

Fear not … one fabulous fabric mixed judiciously with moderately priced fabrics elevates the entire room.

The ideal inspiration fabric should have at least three colors which can be blended with two or more additional fabrics. Vary the fabrics with contrast, texture, scale, sheen and pattern.

Patterns: Mix fluid patterns, such as a floral or a toile with a check, stripe or plaid. Next, add a third pattern, such as a small overall print or solid color.

Contrast: Overall color of one fabric should be light, with one medium, and one darker.

Texture: Choose fabrics with different textures, such as a sleek silk, a nubby woven linen, or velvet.

Scale: Vary the size of the patterns by including one large, one medium and one small or solid. For example, you might choose a large damask, a medium size stripe in coordinating

colors, and a small embroidered pattern or a solid texture.

Sheen: Luminous fabrics are best when featured against a matte fabric.

Forget fear and experiment with different fabric samples until you find a grouping that feels comfortable with the balance of color, scale and pattern. Once fabrics are selected, move ahead bravely with a plan of where they will be used. Spread the fabrics around the room to create balance. For example, if you use your inspiration fabric for a valance and/or curtains, or draperies in your bedroom, you might use the same fabric for a couple of throw pillows, shams or a headboard. The second fabric could be used as a duvet cover and for window shades and to upholster one chair. Your third fabric might be a luxurious solid linen that can be used to trim the window treatments, make shams or throw pillows for the bed, and to cover a bench at the foot of the bed and the second chair.

Don’t forget that your wall and floor coverings are additional areas for color, pattern and scale. Consider those elements, as well as the style and scale of your furniture, when planning a room.

Bowl a strike with this winter project Commentary by Ashley Phipps The weather has officially gotten frigid, and while it is occasionally fun to go outside and play in the snow with your kids, sometimes, it is simply too cold! During these cold winter months it’s not an easy job to find fun and creative ways to help my two children continue to learn, grow and not drive each other crazy!

Creating this simple snowman bowling set is a great way to get your children involved in an activity they will actually love to use.

You Will Need: • Wooden Dowel (approximately 1 inch or larger in diameter and approximately 4 feet in length) • Craft paint (white, black, orange) • Felt • Foam paint brush • Small paint brushes • Masking tape • Hot glue gun • Saw (miter or hand held is fine) • Sandpaper How To: 1. Cut your 4 foot length of wooden dowel into six equal pieces, 8 inches long. Be sure to carefully cut the ends perpendicular so that they will stand upright.

2. Sand the ends and corners of the dowel to take off any rough areas. These don’t need

4. Tape off a top section of your dowel (approximately 1 inch down from the top) and paint black paint from the tape up.

This will be your snowman hat.

5. Using the wrong end of a small paint brush, dip it in black paint and dab on the dowel for eyes, mouth and buttons.

6. Use the right end of a small paint brush and orange paint to paint in a carrot nose.

(No need for perfection!)

7. Cut six pieces of felt about 8 inches long and ½ inch wide in various colors. Tie around the snowman for a scarf. Use a dab of hot glue to secure in place.

8. Find an old ball and get ready to BOWL! Only adults should carefully cut the wooden dowels, using safety goggles and proper preventative measures. But your children can help you paint and assemble the snowmen.

I can almost guarantee your kids will love bowling over snowman in the wintertime. And it will help give them one more activity to do when the dreaded “I’m bored …” starts being said.

Enjoy! to be perfectly sanded as they will see a little wear and tear anyway.

3. Using your foam brush, paint the dowels white. Let dry completely.

New year, newly organized space Commentary by David Decker A new year has begun, and it’s the perfect time to start fresh and get rid of all the junk that’s cluttering up your life – and your home.

Simplify your life by getting organized with the help of some welldesigned products and innovative storage solutions. Take a look at a few of these creative ideas and little enhancements.

Because it’s often the hub of a home, the kitchen is notorious for becoming messy and disorderly.

The easiest way to keep unnecessary items from cluttering up your kitchen is to ensure that everything has a designated spot.

Consider replacing some of the cabinet shelves with pull out drawers or trays. Drawers often have a larger surface area for storage, and you’ll also be able to reach items at the back of the cabinet with greater ease. For added organization, you can install the same rolling trays or drawers in the pantry. You can group similar foods in the pantry together for easy access. You can even designate each member of the family a shelf so everyone knows where their favorite foods are.

If you aren’t looking to change your cabinets or pantry, there are also a number of small ways you can maximize kitchen organization. Store dishes, baking supplies or linens in a little armoire in the kitchen. A basic pegboard can be used to hold kitchen utensils, freeing up your cabinet drawers. Save space by hanging pots over an island, doorway or window using a rack.

Now let’s take on the second most visited room in the house: the bathroom. Keeping everything organized in the bathroom can be a difficult task. Well-designed built-in storage or shelving are great for storing towels, soaps and other products. Try to install storage in overlooked places such as walls, corners or the back of the door. If you are faced with limited space, you could use small baskets or hooks to organize
