Mayor’s former campaign manager hired by CRC

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The campaign manager for Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard’s 2019 reelection bid has joined the Carmel Redevelopment CITY NEWS Commission to lead its business retention and expansion efforts, despite concerns from some city officials.

During a Dec. 3 virtual meeting, the CRC approved a contract to pay $7,750 per month, or $93,000 per Sisko year, to The Sisko Group, founded by Laken Sisko, an Indianapolis resident and former campaign manager for Brainard. CRC commissioners Dave Bowers, Bill Brooks and Adam Campagna voted in favor, with Jeff Worrell, who also serves on the Carmel City Council, casting the lone vote in opposition.

CRC Director Henry Mestetsky said the newly created role will assist the mayor and the city’s economic development team in attracting and retaining top companies in Carmel, Mestetsky with a focus on downtown and the U.S. 31 corridor. Sisko has been tasked with enhancing relationships with existing corporate citizens, decision makers at businesses looking to relocate, office brokers, economic development professionals and site selectors.

“My first priority is to stand alongside the CEOs of the 130 corporate headquarters in Carmel, many of whom I consider friends, to ensure we are providing all of the necessary resources for them to remain and succeed,” Sisko stated in an email. “My second is to serve as an advocate for those looking to relocate to Carmel both in state and nationwide. I have represented the mayor in the past on his campaign and he has entrusted me to do the same while retaining and recruiting corporate headquarters alongside of him and city staff.”

Sisko founded The Sisko Group in 2011,

and through it has run fundraising campaigns for nonprofits and served as a consultant to politicians. Before running Brainard’s successful 2019 reelection campaign, she had experience working with former U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks, Secretary of State Connie Lawson, State Sen. Erin Houchin and incoming Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita during a bid for Congress, according to her LinkedIN profile.

Despite the political successes, city councilor Sue Finkam said she would have preferred to see the city hire a candidate with more relevant experience. “(Mestetsky) weighted Finkam her relationships higher than her economic development experience,” Finkam said. “While relationships are important, when we’re talking about economic development in today’s world, where data is key as much as positioning the city as a desirable place to do business, I would’ve weighted it exactly the opposite.”

Finkam said she urged CRC commissioners to vote against the contract, in part because she believed it lacked prohibitions against Sisko sharing economic development knowledge she learned in Carmel with other entities. After initially proposing the contract, the CRC added a yearlong noncompete clause to the approved version that restricts Sisko from working in a similar role for another municipality.

Finkam said she’s also uncomfortable with the impression it leaves about how some Carmel officials conduct business.

“I asked the mayor and (Mestetsky) how they were planning to position this hire because of her role in (Brainard’s) campaign, and neither seemed concerned,” Finkam said.

“I don’t like the appearance it gives at all.”

In an email, Mestetsky — who said at the November 2020 CRC meeting he expects the new role to eventually move from a contracted position to a city hire — stated Sisko has the right skill set for the job despite not previously working for a government entity.

“It’s hard to find a better person for the role than Laken. She has built her own busi-

ness for over a decade, establishing a broad network of corporate, governmental and political relationships,” Mestetsky stated.

“She is a self-starter, a highly motivated and organized leader, knows how to sell a product (especially when that product is Carmel), and has spent years engaging with the types of c-suite-level decision-makers that will bring the next set of companies to Carmel.”

Mestetsky views her connection to the Brainard campaign as a benefit.

“The fact that she was the mayor’s former campaign manager is a positive. It’s a good thing to have talented people with private sector experience in government,” Mestetsky stated. “We’re fortunate to have someone with Laken’s skill set and relationships transition to the public sector to fight to bring jobs to Carmel.”

Brainard also touted Sisko’s experience building relationships in the private sector as making her “a good fit” for the new CRC role.

“There’s a lot of work involved (in the job),” he said. “Because somebody had a paid job in a campaign doesn’t disqualify them for another job.”

Sisko, who has undergraduate degrees in business, international studies and Spanish and a Master of Public Administration from IUPUI, said her background in business and politics serves her well in the new role.

“I have worked extensively with the corporate community in Indiana for the past decade, particularly in central Indiana,” Sisko stated. “I have also worked closely with the mayor and his leadership team, making me uniquely qualified to broker corporate relationships on behalf of the city, for the city and with the city.”

Worrell said his role on the CRC was to review and vote on the details of the contract, not the specific person selected for the job, although he acknowledges the choice raises eyebrows for some.

“It is an obvious issue that anyone might question,” he said. “But as in any hiring situation within the city, I can voice my concern, which I did, but I have no authority to go any further than that.”

Hamilton County opens COVID-19 vaccination site news@currentincarmel.com The Hamilton County Health Dept. was set to begin offering COVID-19 vaccinations to people older than 80 PANDEMIC years of age starting Jan. 11. Those who fall into this age group can register for an appointment at ourshot.in.gov or by calling 2-1-1.

HCHD is expecting to receive 800 doses of the vaccine this week. It will administer the shots from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Annex Building at the 4-H Fairgrounds in Noblesville at 2003 Pleasant St. “We hope to administer at least 160 vaccines a day,” said Christian Walker, HCHD

emergency preparedness coordinator, in a press release. “But that will depend entirely on if we get the vaccine we’ve been promised and how many people make appointments.”

Caregivers with a loved one who is 80 or older can register on their behalf. Vaccines are free, but those with insurance should provide that information upon registration.

All recipients must prove they live or work in Indiana.

Once those older than 80 are vaccinated, the State Dept. of Health will open vaccination registration to residents between the ages of 70-79, followed by people ages 60-69.

Red indicates the highest level of spread in a community.

Carmel Clay Schools plans to continue its existing offerings, with elementary students able to choose to attend school in person or virtually and middle and high school students choosing a hybrid model of in-person and virtual schooling or fully virtual classes.

CCS Director of Community Relations Emily Bauer said district leaders confirmed with county health officials the afternoon of Jan. 6 that their operation plan will still work with the county classified as red.

Soon after the state changed the county’s advisory level, the Carmel Clay Public Library announced it would close both of its locations to in-person visits until further notice.

Curbside holds pickup will remain available.

The switch from orange to red on the advisory scale brought additional restrictions for the county. The state is requiring that counties categorized as red: • Limit social gatherings to 25 people, with no exceptions from the local health department.

• Limit attendance at recreational sporting events to participants, required personnel, parents, guardians, siblings, spouses and minor children of participants or personnel.

• Allow for indoor dining but encourage businesses to promote curbside pickup or online ordering.

• Suggest K-12 school officials review and reevaluate their plans.

• Suspend activities at senior centers.

• Allow hospitals, long-term care and other congregate settings to impose visitation limits.

Counties designated as red have 200 or more weekly cases per 100,000 residents and a seven-day all-test positivity rate of 15 percent or greater.

City court move — Carmel City Court has relocated to a new location a few blocks west of Carmel City Hall, where it had been situated on the second floor. Police arrest 4, seek another ______ CITY OF CARMEL’S ______ suspect in Carmel CVS robbery DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY CELEBRATION

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Four suspects are in custody and one remains at large after a robbery reported at 1:17 a.m. Jan. 6 at the Carmel CVS CRIME at 1421 S. Range Line Rd. After being dispatched to CVS for a robbery in progress, police said they observed a vehicle fleeing the scene. Officers pursued the vehicle until it crashed at 116th Street and Woodland Drive.

Police said they arrested three suspects at the crash scene and that two additional suspects fled on foot. A Fishers Police Dept.

K-9 unit helped locate one of the suspects a short time later. Police used a K-9 and drone to attempt to locate the other suspect, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Police recovered multiple guns while taking the suspects into custody. They do not know if the at-large suspect is armed.

Three of the suspects are juveniles and are facing robbery of a pharmacy, fleeing law enforcement and other charges. Alleick-Zander Coleman, 18, of Indianapolis, has been charged with robbery of a pharmacy,

theft, fleeing law enforcement and leaving the scene of an accident. He also had a warrant in Marion County for battery and pointing a firearm.

A CVS employee was injured during the robbery and treated at the scene, police said.

OBITUARY Our friend, Jim Briggs, left this earth on November 4th, 2020. He was Eighty-Eight years old. Born in Fort Wayne, IN. on April 21, 1932 to Dr. Orville and Lilian Briggs, he spent his youth among a myriad of animals on their farm, outside Columbia City, IN. , which, no doubt, contributed to his kind and gentle nature.

Jim attended Columbia City High School and spent his summers as a cadet at Culver Academy, where he played the drums in the marching band. Culver offered him a football scholarship at that time, but he turned them down, later stating “you couldn’t play football and be in the band.” After High School, he attended DePauw University. A member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, he would often lovingly joke that their colors where “baby blue & pink”. He then went on to the University of Michigan, where he earned his law degree. Jim hung out his shingle in Indianapolis and was a founding partner of the predecessor to the office of Taft, Settinius, and Hollister, LLP. He remained in practice for 35 years.

Upon retiring, he spent his days caring for

and unconditionally loving the animals at the Wilson Family Farm in Carmel.

Jim had a mind like a steel trap and could remember every name, face and conversation he ever had.

To say he enjoyed conversing, would be an understatement. His knack for building relationships was uncanny.

No matter what the occasion, he would strike up a witty repartee with strangers and leave having made new friends. His dry, intelligent humor was abundant and those who were fortunate enough to be in his presence, relished it.

He leaves behind the Fitzgerald, Wilson and Brickley families, along with many treasured friends, who were family to him. When Jim was head over heels about something or someone, he would say “There are not enough adjectives to describe how I feel.” For all of us who knew him, there are not enough adjectives to describe how we feel upon his passing, how wonderful he was and how much he will be missed.

A limited celebration of his life took place at the Wilson property on November eight.

Photography permit required

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County Parks and Recreation’s policy requiring the registration of professional photographers COUNTY PARKS and videographers conducting commercial operations in its parks drew some immediate questions from the community.

Don Nicholls, HCPR resource development specialist, said the policy was made public via a departmental Facebook posting Jan. 4. The subsequent clarification, after being reviewed by parks leadership, was then posted on the Facebook page Jan. 6. The fees are $10 for a single day or $50 for an annual permit.

“Compared to other (similar) photo permit fees, these costs are very nominal,” Nicholls said. “The park board approved the policy based on input they received from park staff. If you perform an online search of park agencies, you will learn that it is common practice for parks agencies to have a photo-permitting program in place.”

The department clarified amateur and

casual photographers in county parks do not require a permit. Media photographers also are exempt.

According to the post, the policy was established because HCPR was regularly receiving concerns from park users about professional photographers or videographers interfering with park guests’ enjoyment. The new policy will have other benefits as well.

Contact information of registrants will allow effective and efficient communication of current and updated rules and regulations governing professional photography and videography on county park property.

It will also allow HCPR to quickly notify photographers of closures because of safety concerns, temporary wildlife areas or scheduled events.

The new system will also allow HCPR to alert professional photographers and videographers about opportunities to capture images within the county park system.

Local driver takes next turn in IndyCar racing career

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Dr. Jack Miller got his start in racing comparatively late, so he was determined to forge a different path ACHIEVEMENT for his son.

“I didn’t race anything until I was 26 years old and ran my first Indy 500 when I was 35,” said Miller, who was nicknamed the Racing Dentist during his career. “I decided if I had a child

interested in racing, I would start him off early.”

That’s what happened as Miller’s son, who goes by Jack William Miller to avoid confusion, started racing youth 4-wheelers at 2 years old and go-karts at age 3.

“From there, it was just keep climbing the ladder,” said Miller, who operates a dentistry office in Carmel.

17, spent the last two years in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship. He finished eighth in the 2020 point standings. He would have finished higher if three races hadn’t ended in crashes.

“He did very well this year. His highest finish was second,” Jack Miller said. “He finished third in the Indy race. We feel with the skills he has, let’s move him up and see how he does. I think he’ll do really well.”

The next step on the Road to Indy path following Indy Pro is Indy Lights, and then IndyCar. Jack William competes for Miller Vinatieri Motorsports, a team formed by his father and former Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri, a Zionsville resident.

“After two years in USF2000, it’s good to make the step up,” Jack William said. “I had some good results and performances this year.”

The biggest thing he said he has learned is how to better set up the car.

“The more experience, the more years you have in it, you are always going to do better,” Jack William said. “When you move up you have a lot more options of things to do on the car.”

He is ready for the challenge.

“I think we can and should win some races,” said Jack William, whose first Indy Pro race will be in April in Birmingham, Ala. He said there was a benefit to start racing early.

“Nowadays, everyone is starting pretty young. It’s not like back in the day when you could get in a car at 20 and do well,” Jack William said. “Now, you have to be so focused on it, it has to be your entire life to be at the top level.”

To be in top physical shape, Jack William has participated in triathlons (bicycling, swimming and running) and recently completed his first half-ironman triathlon in Florida.

Neighbors rally to save, restore historic Lynnwood Farm corn crib

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Lynn Croxton can often be found enjoying time on his neighborhood golf course, a place where he enjoyed a much different hobby in his younger days.

As a teen, Croxton judged livestock at Lynnwood Farm, a 623-acre property that is now home to Northview Church, Plum Croxton Creek golf course and surrounding neighborhoods.

Now 78, the Clinton County native moved to Plum Creek Farms in 2001 to be near the Plum Creek Golf Club, but he enjoys reminiscing about his younger days in and around the area. He remembers playing basketball in one of the farm’s many barns and winning the top prize at the Indiana State Fair after entering pigs descended from those he won in a contest from Lynnwood Farm.

“There was probably a subliminal attraction,” he said. “You think, ‘Yeah, that would be fun to live where you remember as a teenager.’”

One of the most visible reminders of the neighborhood’s past is nestled northwest of 126th Street and Plum Creek Boulevard in the form of a two-story corn crib, one of the few remaining buildings from Lynnwood Farms. Perched on land owned by the Plum Creek Farms Homeowners Association, as its condition deteriorated several years ago, neighborhood leaders realized they needed to restore the structure or tear it down.

Several neighbors felt strongly about preserving the corn crib, a concrete and steel structure historically used to dry and store corn, even though they didn’t know how they’d afford repairing the cement adding a fresh coat of paint and other needed upgrades. But with the help of Indiana Landmarks and the Carmel Historic Preservation Commission, they found a way.

“Having examples that are still standing and have made it this long into the 21st century is an opportunity to say, ‘Gosh, these places are 100 years old, so they’re a glimpse into an earlier era,” said Mark Dollase, Indiana Landmarks vice president of preservation services. “If we can find viable uses for them

that make them an important, active part of life in this time, let’s try to keep them around as important lessons for our children and grandchildren for the future.”

‘A FOCAL POINT’

Initially, it wasn’t clear if the corn crib had enough support to be preserved. Results of a survey sent to Plum Creek Farms residents in 2011 revealed split opinions, but as work progressed and the residents became more aware of the historic relevance of the corn crib, the project gained more support.

Those who felt strongly about saving the corn crib formed a committee and got to work, contacting a local attorney and preservation professionals about their options. The neighbors reached out to Indiana Landmarks, a statewide historic preservation organization, which helped them land a $10,000 grant from the Efroymson Family Fund through the Central Indiana Community Foundation to begin restoration efforts.

Then Dollase, who also serves as CHPC administrator, suggested pursuing a conservation district designation for the site to make it easier to pursue additional grants.

Being designated as a conservation district also would require CHPC to review and approve any future plans to demolish the structure.

CHPC drew up a proposal, and in 2019

the Carmel City Council voted to approve the corn crib as a single-site conservation district. The corn crib joins the Larsen-Dunwoody House, a 1920s Tudor revival-style home, and the Morrison-Cartmel House, a 1966 home designed by Avriel Shull, as the only sites tagged a preservation district in Carmel.

Meanwhile, the Plum Creek Farms HOA and CHPC continued to pursue grants, receiving enough funding — combined with HOA reserve funds — to complete the nearly $150,000 restoration project without raising HOA dues or going into debt.

Previously only used for storage, Plum Creek Farms residents expect the restored corn crib will be a prime spot for photographers, community meetings and other gatherings.

“It’s been perfectly preserved, and it’s in great structural order,” said Jerry Pachciarz, a Plum Creek Farms homeowner who helped lead the restoration effort. “It’s going to be a focal point of a lot of different things.”

CONNECTING THE PAST, FUTURE

Dot Cord is among the Plum Creek Farms residents glad to see the corn crib remain a part of her neighborhood.

A Carmel resident since 1969, she remembers driving family members down the road

to go see the lambs at Lynwood Farm and admire its state-of-the-art buildings, including what she called the “beautiful” oval-shaped corn crib.

In 2000, she and her Cord husband built a home in the Plum Creek neighborhood along the golf course. She walks 2 miles each day, with her route taking her past the restored corn crib. She often stops to reflect on the area’s rich history and incredible progress in recent decades.

“Today, Carmel, Indiana, is known as a world-class city, one in which its residents are proud to live in and call home,” Cord said. “But to fully understand and appreciate how today’s Carmel came to be, one must look at the past and take note of its evolution over time.”

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LYNNWOOD FARM Lynnwood Farm began operations in 1932 on its 623-acre site west of River Road and north of 122nd Street. Owned

by Charles J. Lynn, executive vice president of Eli Lilly and Co., the farm was known for its award-winning percheron draft horses and swine.

In 1942, Lynn donated the farm and its livestock to Purdue University, which used the site to research livestock and agriculture until the late 1980s. As Carmel’s population grew and methods of agricultural research changed, Purdue began offloading the property, first selling 80 acres to Northview Christian Church in the mid-1980s.

In 1988, Purdue sold the remaining land to Browning Investments, which developed the Plum Creek golf course. designed by Pete Dye, and five subdivisions.

Other surviving farm buildings are the horse barn, the former Lynnwood office to the east of the barn and a show arena north of the barn.

Managing expectations

Noise ordinance update unsound

Commentary by Terry Anker By now, the seasonal gifts have all been revealed. The ones repeatedly delayed in delivery have found their way to our doors, mostly intact. Holiday cards are presented upon the mantle for a week or two longer. Colleagues, neighbors and suppliers greeted us with smiles and the occasional tin of cookies as a token of their esteem and goodwill. Our waistlines have reached their peak with the promise of a better diet and more activity in the coming weeks to hasten the decline to our formerly aspired girth. Such is the story of every new year.

Still, the echo of the season doesn’t resonate the same with everyone. Some of us tore into our gifts to find them resplendent and abundant with an excess of all hopes, while others removed shiny printed paper only to discover meager rations and disappointment. We smiled politely and reassured the giver. Inside, we longed for more. Whether the Red Ryder BB gun, the end to the pandemic, victory in the ongoing and seemingly endless elections or a pretty little pony, we didn’t get what we wanted and are not happy about it.

And for those of us who found stockings filled with great plenty, we aren’t entirely satisfied, either. Sure, the toys are fun for a moment, until we notice that they aren’t quite as good as the commercials on television might suggest.

Why doesn’t GI Joe’s “action grip” hands actually grip? Exactly when will we get the COVID-19 vaccine, and will it work for us? Does absolute political power make problems go away, or, if anything, does it only change the nature of them? The pony was fun on Christmas morning, but after bragging to our friends about getting one, well, not so much now. Can you believe how expensive and full of you-know-what they are?

Oh, for not crying out loud Commentary by Danielle Wilson To cry or not to cry? Or more to the point, to cry or not to cry in front of your children?

That is the question that has HUMOR been receiving quite a bit of attention in our household of late. According to our four kids, Doo and I are relatively good parents, but the one area where we have definitely failed is in the modeling of vulnerability.

It’s not a surprising accusation, really.

Doo grew up in a world where men simply didn’t cry, and so he doesn’t. And though I do get emotional, it’s a rarity that very few will ever witness. I’m half British and spent a couple of years in the military — stoicism is my thing, at least until I reach the safety of a vacant bathroom or minivan. I’m also terrible when dealing with others who are sharing deep feelings. I either flee or make an inappropriate four-letter-word joke. And god forbid if hugs are called for. Blech.

The problem is that my now young-adult

offspring don’t know how to express heartache or sorrow in a healthy way. They’ve never seen it done, not by me or Doo. And they’ve finally called us out on it, elaborating incessantly on this shortcoming over the last month: “We need therapy, Mom!” OK, Doo and I figured our heirs would seek professional help at some point.

They’ve grown up with a left-leaning redheaded mother who suppresses her emotions and a right-leaning bald father who battles ADD. But how to show grief? I didn’t see that one coming.

In answer to my previous question, then, absolutely cry in front of your children!

Editor, The Camel City Council has floated a sound ordinance amendment that would require Carmelites after 11 p.m. not to energize sound waves from an electronic device that can be heard beyond the boundaries of private property or from more than 50 feet from which the sound emanates if on public property.

This is proposed because the existing ordinance requires a police officer to monitor sounds above certain decibel levels for at least 20 minutes.

Let me see if I’ve got this right. It’s a hot summer night; I’m watching TV and to save the planet, I’ve opened my windows. Oh, yes, I’m hearing impaired, so the volume is up. A neighbor is walking a dog past my house and the dog starts barking, causing other dogs to bark.

Someone complains to the police and I receive a fine.

Changing the evidence of violation from an objective recording decibel meter to the simple hearing of sound by a police officer moves the enforcement away from the objective to the subjective. Is this progress?

Perhaps the amendment was the result of brainstorming to see what would stick to the wall. We hope it falls to the floor with a loud thud.

A chilling tale of the basement fridge When we got married and were planning our future, we decided one would be enough, although many of HUMOR our friends had two. Two was never in our plans, but things happen. We ended up keeping the older one in the basement.

Yes, we have two refrigerators.

This would seem like more than enough space for cold foods, right? But we never seem to have room in the kitchen fridge, and we’re always arguing over which edible items should be kept where.

“Dick, I am rearranging things,” Mary Ellen said. “I’m putting your sauerkraut and mustard in the downstairs fridge so I have room for my fresh spinach and my giant Naked Juice bottles.”

“Wait! I don’t want to go downstairs every time I need mustard and sauerkraut for my hot dogs.”

“Why not? You’re going to have to go downstairs, anyway, to get those hot dogs.

I moved them yesterday.”

“What? You moved my hot dogs? How would you like it if I moved your almond

milk to the other fridge?”

“You try that, and you can say adios to your huge jar of salsa.”

Mary Ellen and I then had a cordial discussion about rearranging some of our other personal favorites. She agreed to move her broccoli downstairs and keep my rotisserie chicken upstairs, and I agreed to transfer my White Castle burgers to the downstairs freezer so there was room for Mary Ellen’s frozen yogurt bars in the kitchen.

“I found a yummy piece of leftover corned beef. I hoped it would taste as good as it did on St Patrick’s Day.” But then, Mary Ellen wanted to move all my chilled beer downstairs.

“Six beers take up an entire shelf,” she said.

“Yes, and they take up most of my Sunday when I watch football on TV. Upstairs.”

“Now what are you doing?”

“I’m rearranging all our spring jackets, moving them from the hall closet to the basement clothing rack. After I bring the winter coats upstairs, I want you to help me move the leather reading chair to the guest room, and let’s put your grandfather’s desk back in the corner of the master bedroom.”

“I hate moving things around. Unlike you, I am a creature of habit. How did we ever end up together? Do you think it was by chance?”

“Heavens, no. It was arranged.”

Rita’s Italian Ice coming soon

Rita’s Italian Ice MAIN STREET & Frozen Custard is scheduled to open at 110 W. Main St., Suite 125, in the Carmel Arts & Design District in late February or, at the latest, the first day of spring.

“We’re super excited about it. It should be great right off the Monon Trail,” said Wilkos, whose store will have a pick-up window.

Wilkos signed the lease in mid-December for the 1,200-square feet space, formerly occupied by Huntington Bank.

Wilkos, a Westfield resident, moved to Indiana approximately three years ago to work as a sales executive for Finish Line, where he retired at the end of 2018. Prior to that, he worked as an executive for Nordstrom for several years in the Seattle area.

“This is our family business,” he said. “My wife, Sue, and two sons are all going to be running it. Carmel is our first location. We are hoping to have one or two in Westfield and then Noblesville as well. We love the

ATI co-founders determine timing right to revisit ‘Alabama Story’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The Actors Theatre of Indiana co-founders figured the climate from the 2020 protests over racial PERFORMANCE injustice presented the right opportunity to revisit its 2019 production of “Alabama Story.”

With the pandemic curtailing live performances, ATI is presenting a pay-per-view stream of a recorded performance from Jan. 18 to Feb. 14.

The play, written by Kenneth Jones, is based on the true story of a state senator who wanted the Alabama Public Library to remove a children’s book, “The Rabbits’ Wedding,” which depicts a black and white rabbit getting married. The legislator believed the book promoted interracial marriage and wanted the book banned.

ATI co-founder Cynthia Collins played the role of Alabama state librarian and Indiana native Emily Wheelock Reed, who resisted the censorship in 1959.

“There will always be racists in this country and around the world spreading hate,” Collins said. “The year 2020 brought much of that to light, as did the Civil Rights movement, opening the eyes of some and further closing the eyes of others. Through education, patience and persistence, good will prevail over evil.

“It is always important to keep the conversation alive in regard to racism, not to cover it up, not to pretend it doesn’t exist in your community. ‘Alabama Story’ shows us all of these things.”

Collins said it was an important role for her for many reasons, including bringing a real person to life on stage who did everything within her power to stop the banning of a book.

“In her way, Emily Reed fought a very difficult battle against a very racist community,” she said. “This was a woman in 1959 in the South fighting white men, white men in power. To me, that is always significant. As an actor, I was honored to

portray her and relish in roles like this, written so beautifully by playwright Kenneth Jones.”

Maeghan Looney, who is based in Chicago but living in Ft. Wayne during the pandemic, played the role of Lily, a white woman who reconnects with a Black man she knew as a child.

“I was moved by the production and by the audience reaction to it,” Looney said.

“Many people left with tears in their eyes.

Had I been a spectator and not a performer, I still would have thought about this show and its message many times over the course of 2020.”

Looney said the subject matter is important to examine.

“Our world view is shaped by our own experience,” she said. “You can be deeply empathetic and still not fully comprehend the impact of an experience until you’ve lived it. The events that ignited the explosive outcry over racial inequality in America this year were not isolated. Racism didn’t go away after 1960. More than once, a patron leaving the auditorium relayed how connected they felt to my character,

Lily, and I think most of us were Lily this year, overwhelmed, wanting to help but not sure how.

“But like her, we were all given opportunities to listen, take initiative to educate ourselves to not turn a blind eye because it was more comfortable, and to examine how our own behavior might not represent the best of us. Yes, I believe things will hit differently upon a second viewing after the events of this year, and I hope the lessons there continue to inspire growth.”

Sam Arce, a Broadway investor and Carmel resident, saw the opening night show of “Alabama Story” and was moved.

Arce said ATI co-founder Don Farrell’s performance as the segregationist senator was remarkable because the role is so far removed from who he is.

Arce was reminded of growing up watching Alabama Gov. George Wallace, a segregationist during the 1960s and ’70s.

He plans to watch the performance with his son, Sammy, a Carmel High School freshman.

“I think it will be just another good learning point for him,” Arce said. “Nowadays, it’s important we have these discussions. You could see a lot of emotions when people were talking to the cast after the show.”

Arts advocate Frank Basile supported the play’s message in a November 2019 speech at the grand opening of the building housing the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library, pointing out how Vonnegut advocated against literary censorship and supported social justice.

A fan of ATI musicals, Basile said he was surprised to learn ATI was doing the serious play.

“My wife Katrina and I attended the play, not knowing what to expect,” Basile said.

“We were absolutely stunned and moved by the superb acting of the ATI players. I am happy to see that the play will now be streamed since it addresses a topic that is even more relevant today.”

ITA offers free life skills programs to kids in need

By Rick Morwick rick@youarecurrent.com Tatyana Komarova knows that 2020, with school closures and imperfect hybrid learning models, was an GIVING BACK incredibly difficult time for students — especially for those in underserved communities.

To help level the learning playing field, the nonprofit that Komarova leads — the Carmel-based International Talent Academy — is Komarova offering free online public speaking and etiquette programs for underprivileged kids. They are available to children between the ages of 10 and 15 who are involved in free or reduced-lunch programs at their schools and who have access to a computer and the internet.

Although the programs have been offered at the Monon Center in Carmel for several years, Komarova said this year marks the first time they have been offered free to underprivileged kids.

“During the spring, summer and fall, most kids lost availability to after-school activities due to COVID-19,” said Komarova, the ITA’s founder and executive director. “We decided to design online, interactive programs so kids can connect and have the live communication with other kids and teachers. We ran several virtual classes during the fall, and they were very successful.

“Later, we came up with the idea to offer our programs to kids who do not have the opportunity to take them. This is our part of giving back to the community.”

Public speaking classes will be offered every Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. from Jan. 26 through March 16, and 21st-century cotillion classes will be offered every Friday from 5 to 6 p.m. from Jan. 29 to March 19. The cost is normally $120 for each eight-week course. “(Participants) will take away knowledge that they will be able to use at school right away,” Komarova said. “(They will) get motivation and encouragement to improve on their skills, meet new friends and raise their self-esteem.”

One of my favorite declarative sentences in pop culture is when Michael Scott, regional manager of the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Co. in “The Office,” walks into the eponymous office and announces, “I declare bankruptcy.”

The accounting department proceeds to tell Michael that you can’t just “declare” bankruptcy, but you actually have to fill out paperwork to achieve legal bankruptcy status.

A declarative sentence makes a statement, provides an explanation, or communicates a fact or information. You’ll find declarative sentences (or declarative statements) written in the present tense, and they usually end in periods. In Michael

With rooms starting at $1,500 a night, it is frequently called the most luxurious hotel in the world.

The Burj, which opened in 1999 at an estimated cost of $1 billion, is on a small man-made island in the Persian Gulf about 900 feet northwest of Jumeirah Beach, connected to the mainland by a causeway. Its uniquely curved shape evokes the sail of a dhow, a traditional Arabian (and Indian) water vessel. At 918 feet, the Burj is the fourth-tallest hotel in the world, accommodating a 600-foot closed atrium, said to be the tallest in the world. The hotel includes 202 two-story suites, ranging in size from 1,800 square feet to 8,400 square feet, each including a marble staircase to upstairs bedrooms featuring mattresses filled with eiderdown, the soft feathers eiders use to line their nests. Almost a half-acre of 24-carat gold leaf adorns the hotel’s interior, including bathroom fixtures and elevator doors.

ORDINANCE NO. D-2560-20 AN ORDINANCE OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL, INDIANA, ADDING SUBSECTIONS (66), (67) and (68) TO CHAPTER 8, ARTICLE 5, SECTION 8-47(a) OF THE CARMEL CITY CODE. Synopsis: Ordinance prohibits parking on certain sections of Emerson Road and 1st Street SW. WHEREAS, pursuant to Indiana Code 9-21-1-3(a)(1), the City of Carmel, Indiana (the “City”) within the reasonable exercise of its police power, may by ordinance regulate vehicular parking; WHEREAS, the City has previously regulated vehicular parking within its corporate limits, such regulations being codified, in part, in the City Code Section 8-47(a); and WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of Carmel, Indiana, now finds that it is in the interests of the public safety and welfare to further regulate parking on certain sections of Pasture View Court and Wildcat Drive.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED, by the Common Council of the City of Carmel, Indiana, as follows: Section 1. The foregoing Recitals are fully incorporated herein by this reference.

Section 2. The following subsections of Carmel City Code Section 8-47(a) are hereby added and shall read as follows: “(66) On the north/west side of Emerson Road between 4th Ave SW and Sherman Drive.

(67) On the south/east side of Emerson Road between 4th Ave SW and a point ending 200 feet west of its intersection with 4th Ave SW. (68) On the south side of 1st Street SW between 4th Avenue SW and Monon Blvd.”

Section 3. The remaining provisions of Carmel City Code Sections 8-47 are not affected by this Ordinance and shall remain in full force and effect.

Section 4. All prior ordinances or parts thereof inconsistent with any provision of this Ordinance are hereby repealed, to the extent of such inconsistency only, as of the effective date of this Ordinance, such repeal to have prospective effect only. However, the repeal or amendment by this Ordinance of any other ordinance does not affect any rights or liabilities accrued, penalties incurred or proceedings begun prior to the effective date of this Ordinance. Those rights, liabilities and proceedings are continued and penalties shall be imposed and enforced under such repealed or amended ordinance as if this Ordinance had not been adopted.

Section 5. If any portion of this Ordinance is for any reason declared to be invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, such decision shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this Ordinance so long as enforcement of same can be given the same effect.

Section 6. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after the date of its passage and signing by the Mayor and such publication as required by law.

Section 7. The Carmel Street Department is directed to promptly add the appropriate signage to fulfill the mandates contained in this Ordinance upon its passage.

PASSED by the Common Council of the City of Carmel, Indiana, this 21st day of December, 2020, by a vote of 8 ayes and 0 nays.
