Spark Buttons help ignite CarmelFest

By Maddie Scott • news@currentincarmel.com Since 1988, families have been enjoying the twoday Independence Day celebration, CarmelFest – an event with live music, a variety diversions of food and entertainment for all ages. This year will mark the celebration’s 25th anniversary, the “Silver Jubilation” CarmelFest.

While attending CarmelFest has become a tradition in many Carmel households, so has been buying a Spark Button, according to Jeff Worrell, the chairman of CarmelFest.

When Worrell introduced the community to Spark Buttons in 1994 to help raise money for the fireworks show, only a handful of buttons were sold. Since then, Spark Buttons has become a hugely successful campaign.

Jack Badger, chairman of Spark Buttons, has been helping in the Carmel community for more than a decade. Most Carmel residents may know Badger better through the Carmel Dads’ Club program. It was Badger who worked for 11 years on the Mark Badger Memorial Park as a tribute to his son, Mark.

But it also was Badger who is responsible for the light-up buttons along with the coupons that come with the Spark Buttons. Regular Spark Buttons cost $3 and include more than $60 in coupons, and the lighted buttons cost $6 and include more than $140 in coupons.

“I am grateful for (Badger’s) dedication to the success of the program,” Worrell said. “He has clearly helped sales grow.”

The first year light-up Spark Buttons were introduced, Badger hand made 25 buttons and raised $25; now, Badger leaves the light-up buttons to the professionals at Buztronics in Indianapolis.

Starting in January, Badger met with merchants to see whether they would be interested in being a part of the Spark Button team.

“Spark Buttons benefit both the merchants and the community,” Badger said. “It’s a win-win situation.

“By purchasing a Spark Button, people will be able to look up in the sky on our country’s birthday and say, ‘That’s mine up there, I helped pay for that one,’” Badger said, adding that locals will be able to see every firework shell if they can see the red, blinking light on top of the antenna tower next to the Monon Trail.

“Purchasing a Spark Button is a way for people to feel connected to the activities that take place,” Worrell said.

Worrell and Badger are hoping to see the number of buttons sold go from 3,000 units to 6,000 units in the next three years.

“I would like to look out onto the Gazebo crowd and see 9 out of 10 people proudly wearing a Spark Button,” Worrell said.

Badger and Worrell will be at the Farmer’s Market selling Spark Buttons every Saturday while wearing their famous patriotic hats; this year, Worrell revealed that he has made a light-up board that he also will be wearing.

Support staff honor – In a surprise ceremony on May 6, Scott Seright, instructional assistant at Creekside Middle School, was named the 2013 Carmel Clay Schools Support Staff of the Year.

This is the first year for this award. Supt. Dr. Jeff Swensson and Seright’s family surprised Seright and his colleagues by making the announcement at his school. Seright was described as “a caring and upstanding man who works above and beyond in all capacities.” Seright has worked in the district since 2000 as an instructional assistant, substitute teacher and coach of both basketball and softball teams. Seright is married to Marilyn and has two daughters who are both teachers. One of his daughters, Kristen Leer, is a teacher at Creekside.

news@currentincarmel.com CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions presented its Caregiver of the Year Award to JoAnn Fowler Combs, Indianapolis, recently Award during its annual Signature Breakfast at Ritz Charles, Carmel.

“Caregiving requires a tremendous personal sacrifice of time and resources,” said Orion Bell IV, CICOA president and CEO. “This award was created to shine a light on caregivers like JoAnn Fowler Combs who willingly and compassionately take care of their loved ones despite the strain caregiving may bring to their own lives.”

Combs is one of the estimated 65.7 million people in the United States who provide care for an elderly or disabled family member.

Because of caregivers like her, individuals are able to stay in their homes longer and lead lives of dignity and independence.

“Taking care of people – from the youngest ones to now older adults – it’s been a journey, but also a gift from God,” Combs said. “And to meet so many people in the community who are involved in the same mission of caregiving… it was a blessing to be there and to receive this honor. It’s something I never dreamed of.”

If you see this plant, pull it

By Colleen Peregrin • news@currentincarmel.com The invasion of Carmel’s fauna by a plant called garlic mustard is a matter of concern to many people. nature “Nonnative invasive species are problematic, mainly because they can crowd out native species and do not provide food for native wildlife,” said Patricia Chester, a volunteer in Central Park in Carmel.

Another problem with nonnative species is that the insects in the area are not attracted to the plant, and fewer insects have a large impact on the whole food chain.

Garlic mustard, which is causing concern in Carmel, can be seen alongside the Monon Trail.

The pretty looking white flower’s exterior can be deceptive because the flower can be detrimental to the local ecosystem.

The first thing to do when you see this plant is remove it from your yard.

“Pull it out and put it in trash bags and in the trash. Do not leave it in piles on the ground,” Chester said. “A plant left bare root on the ground can continue to flower and produce for weeks after being pulled.”

There are areas in Carmel where garlic mustard is so dense it has overtaken all the native wildflowers.

Carmel City Council recap Citizen Concerns: Redevelopment Commission report What it means: Kathy Wallace requested clarification of construction plans for City Center and Arts & Design District parcels. Coats opposes Obamacare

Entitlement programs, immigration and health care reform were some of the topics on the menu as dozens of Hamilton politics County’s leading businesspeople gathered at Shapiro’s for a roundtable discussion with Sen. Dan Coats recently.

During his opening remarks, Coats criticized President Barack Obama’s economic policy, calling it the slowest recovery from a recession in our nation’s history. (The website, Politifact.com, disputes Coats’ assertion slightly, calling it either the second-, third- or fourth-slowest recovery since the Hoover administration, depending on your measuring point.) Coats repeatedly pointed to the example of states like Indiana reducing the size of government and reducing the burden on the taxpayer, adding, “that’s not happening in Washington.”

Coats’ harshest criticism was reserved for the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, claiming the costs for the program were almost incalculable and would damage small business and large corporations both. Most of the attendees agreed. Jo Biggers of Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, Inc. said Obamacare would add $1 million to the company’s healthcare costs, while Jon Goble, chief executive of IU Health North, Saxony and Tipton, said the hospital chain would have to reduce

Despite his hardline stance on illegal immigration, Coats said there was a real need for legal immigrants to come to the U.S. to work jobs Americans either aren’t skilled enough for or don’t want to do.

“We need to keep the doors open for those who want to work,” Coats said.

Local business consultant Terry Anker, a Current columnist, suggested a new constitutional convention could be called, but Coats was quick to downplay that idea.

“You don’t know who would show up,” Coats said. “The other side has the numbers right now.

You could wind up with a constitution we don’t like.”

Instead, Coats urged patience, expressing confidence the tide would turn in 2016 in the GOP’s favor as the ramifications of Obamacare are felt.

One of the biggest roadblocks to GOP success, Coats said to much agreement within the crowd, was a growing “entitlement mentality” among citizens.

“There’s just no incentive for people to work,” Coats said. “Someone on welfare is making the equivalent of $52,000 a year, tax-free. I believe that will change, but I’m not sure if it’ll come politically. … What are we leaving our kids and grandkids? It might take a big crisis to change (from our current path).”

Bill gives schools options

By Christian Sorrell • christian@youarecurrent.com Gov. Mike Pence has signed State Sen. Mike Delph’s (R-Carmel) performance-qualified school’s bill, Senate Enrolled Act 189, education into law. Delph and Pence were joined by Carmel Clay Schools Supt. Dr. Jeff Swensson for the signing on May 8.

Starting July 1, school corporations and individual high schools earning “A” grades from the Indiana Dept. of Education will qualify for the new provision. Based on their 2011 and 2012 performances, CCS and Zionsville Community Schools will both be eligible.

“When it comes to education, there are limitless possibilities. While some schools need guidelines in order to progress, other schools should be cut loose in order to see how high they can go,” Delph said. “With this new law, educators and students can explore new options that will help them surpass current benchmarks.”

Performance-qualified school districts can develop their own curricula, exempt themselves from certain state regulations, design their own career training and organize classroom time around instructional minutes, rather than the current 180-day school year requirement.

The bill was first introduced in early January

by Delph, who worked collaboratively with Swensson and other area superintendents on the creation of the bill.

“Let’s say we have 600 students at CHS that by the end of the first semester of their senior year are admitted to college. Currently, in the second semester, students couldn’t have a schedule that went as college schedules do.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, we would have certain classes such as biochemistry and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students have different classes like French or ceramics,” Swensson said, describing the bill in January. “We will still maintain the number of minutes in the standard 180-day minimum schedule, but without (this bill), we couldn’t do that type of schedule.”

Swensson has made it clear that Carmel Clay Schools has no interest in straying from its current operating calendar.

Testing problems to be considered

ISTEP+ testing was scheduled to take place the week of April 29, but due to computer and server issues that interrupted education the test-taking process on April 29 and 30, testing continued until May 17 for some schools.

The ISTEP+ test, taken online across all grades for the first time this year, was monitored by CTB McGraw-Hill, a private testing vendor, throughout the state.

Carmel Clay Schools, like many school districts throughout Indiana, experienced computer and server outages on both April 29 and 30.

“When testing continued, we did not experience the interruptions like we did before,” said Amy Dudley, assistant supt. of curriculum, instruction and assessment for CCS. “The issue was a CTB/McGraw Hill issue, not a school issue.

CTB/McGraw Hill and the state are looking to correct the issue.”

CTB/McGraw Hill began overseeing the testing process in 2011 as part of a $95-million, four-year contract that expires next year. Indiana is CTB/ McGraw Hill’s largest contract.

“When it was determined that the CTB servers

were not able to sustain the volume of users for full-day usage, we made the decision to have schools alter their test schedules to lessen the number of users accessing the test sessions for a period of three days,” Indiana Supt. of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz said in a statement. “We also extended the testing window until May 17 to allow for all students to complete all test sessions. I realize these decisions have been stressful for both students and parents and have disrupted both school and family activities/plans.”

Going forward, the Indiana Dept. of Education will be working with schools and CTB/McGraw Hill to determine the validity of each test session. Those sessions taken with interruptions may be deemed invalid.

Ritz assured parents that all test sessions results will be shared with parents, students and teachers, even if a test session is invalid.

“The IDOE understands these high stakes and will work diligently to determine how best to fairly address them with this year’s ISTEP+ results,” Ritz said.

It is unclear how these interruptions may affect ISTEP+ testing schedules in future years and how, despite assurances, CTB/McGraw Hill plans to avoid future interruptions.

Out of 388 high schools in Indiana, only 105 met the student performance and college readiness criteria that enabled them to be included in the national rankings.

CHS, ranked fifth in the state and 622nd nationally, was awarded “Silver Medal” recognition, an honor reserved for schools only in the top 11 percent in the nation. These rankings put CHS in the top 3 percent of all public schools nationwide.

Of the Hamilton County schools, Carmel was

ranked the highest, followed closely by Hamilton Southeastern (seventh), Fishers (eighth), Westfield (ninth) and Noblesville (12th) high schools.

To produce the 2013 U.S. News & World Report Best High School rankings, U.S. News teamed up with the Washington, D.C.-based American Institutes for Research, one of the largest behavioral and social science research organizations in the world.

The national rankings were based on a threestep process. The first two steps ensured that the schools serve all of their students well, using performance on state proficiency tests as the benchmarks. For those schools that made it past the first two steps, a third step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.

Stanford’s hopes to attract families

Last month, Kincaid’s in Clay Terrace closed its doors and re-opened on April 15 as Stanford’s, an American neighborhood now open restaurant and bar.

Restaurants Unlimited, Inc., the company that owns both Kincaid’s and Stanford’s, decided to re-brand the location after looking at the position Kincaid’s had developed in Carmel during the past several years.

“We looked over the years at Kincaid’s, and it was becoming a special occasion restaurant. It wasn’t family friendly particularly. It was pretty expensive. I think when (RUI) looked at Carmel, they saw that there are lots of families. We looked at our concepts and Stanford’s seemed to be the best fit for this location,” said Amanda Boucher-Fegley, Stanford’s general manager.

The restaurant’s transformation included new upholstery, new art, new wall finishings and, of course, a new menu.

“It’s classic American. It’s family friendly, but it’s also really great quality ingredients. You can come here and get a steak, but you can also come here and get a dinner. You can still come for a special occasion, but you can also come here with your entire family,” Boucher-Fegley said.

In the weeks since she opened the new restaurant, Boucher-Fegley has found that it has retained many of Kincaid’s regulars while also at-

“I love being a chef, and I’m passionate about food, but I thought that at this point in my life, it might be really fun to open a restaurant and see it from the very beginning,” Boucher-Fegley said. “I was really excited, and I am all about a challenge.”

RUI approached Boucher-Fegley about the general manager position after the decision was made to re-launch the restaurant as Stanford’s.

“I think that with the way the restaurant business has evolved over the years, general managers are much more involved in food, and they need to be, because you need to be the expert on the food,” Boucher-Fegley said. “With Palomino, we had really great food and service, and I think that’s something that I can bring to the table here (at Stanford’s) as well.”

Let’s just pretend this week’s column was not forcefully requested by anyone with the same last name as me and philanthropy certainly not from someone within my same gene pool. Can we also assume the Amy W. in this article is just the typical Indiana University college student who also happens to be from Carmel? I can’t fault her for her persistence as she executes her strategy to leverage any connection to the Current in Carmel for shameless event publicity.

Amy W. starts her plea with, “Since you are always looking for inspiration for your column in the Current, I have the perfect story for you.

IU Dance Marathon is November 15, but there is a golf tournament in Fishers on June 15 at River Glenn to help us raise money.” Sensing my skepticism about how this ties to volunteerism in Carmel, she kept up the pressure. “Over 200 Carmel grads participate every year in IUDM and the Carmel Dance Marathon actually supports IU,” said Amy W. “We are striving toward a $2-million goal, and the golf tournament is a big part of our fundraising strategy. You must tell people about it.”

It is true, Carmel High School Dance Marathon raised close to $300,000 which means there is a high level of interest and support for the event.

It is also true that the money raised by Carmel does flow through the IU organization, eventually ending up at Riley Hospital for Children. And, there is a strong presence of Carmel grads guiding and molding the IU organization.

Take, for example, Adam Burns, Adam Shafer and Audrey Leech; a threesome from Carmel and student executive board members for IUDM. They are key players in this huge yearly event. Adam Burns is Director of Riley Development and said, “My role on the board is to demonstrate leadership and participate in all DM events. Although I am not a very good golfer, I am going to get out there and have fun with all of the IU alums who come back to play in our tournament. It is a 10year tradition.”

Carmel native to star in new Tyler Perry series on OWN

Case in point: A handsome young man who grew up in Carmel, worked hard in school and followed his dreams has been hand-picked by a major Hollywood writer, cover story director and producer to star in a new television show.

Aaron O’Connell’s modeling career was going quite well. He had been featured in major publications like GQ and Vanity Fair.

He had represented major brands like Abercrombie & Fitch and Jockey. He had traveled to Europe and was working on a regular basis between New York and L.A. And then his phone rang with a call he could never have imagined in his wildest dreams.

“I actually thought I was being pranked,” O’Connell said. “I was just getting off a flight from New York, and I had a message from an agency in Indianapolis that I hadn’t heard from in years, telling me that Tyler Perry Productions had requested that I audition for a new television show they were creating. They wanted to know if I was interested in being contacted about it.

I was dubious, but I said OK. Literally 10 minutes later my phone rang, and it was Tyler Perry! He asked me if I would be comfortable doing a Skype audition. I’d never done anything like that before, but of course I said yes.”

“And so I sat in front of five cameras in a sound stage, reading lines for people I couldn’t see,” O’Connell said. “They asked me to do things a few different ways – I did the best I could, but I’d never done anything like that before. And then they just thanked me and that was it. I spent the whole hour’s drive home second-guessing what I did, and thinking of things I wished I’d done. But by the time I pulled into my driveway, my phone rang. It was Tyler Perry again, telling me he was coming to LA to talk to me about the part.”

So, now the new chapter in O’Connell’s career begins as his new show, “The Haves and Have Nots,” premieres on May 28 on the OWN network.

The drama is written, directed and produced by Perry, and tells the story of the rich and powerful Cryer family and the hired help who work for them in their opulent mansion in Savannah, Ga. He plays Wyatt Cryer, the troubled son of patriarch Jim Cryer (played by television veteran John Schneider of “Dukes of Hazzard” and “Smallville” fame).

When asked about the similarities and differences between himself and his character, O’Connell laughed.

“Wyatt and I could not be any more different!

While we are both athletes, Wyatt has drug and alcohol problems and a terrible relationship with his family. He’s had a broken childhood and is a disappointment to his family,” he said. “I, on the other hand, am incredibly close to my family and I’ve never done drugs. I had to watch episodes of ‘Intervention’ to learn what people on drugs say and do. That was my homework.”

The show, which began filming in Atlanta in

February, was shot at a remarkable pace – three one-hour episodes per week, for a total of 16 episodes in six weeks.

“It was acting boot camp!” O’Connell said. “Once, when a scene ran short, Tyler (Perry) whipped out a laptop and wrote dialogue right there on the set. We went out in the hallway and memorized the lines while they set up the cameras and then shot the scene in two takes.”

Pretty intense stuff for someone’s first acting job, but none of the success he’s enjoying has changed O’Connell a bit.

“There’s nowhere I’d rather be than right here in Carmel, with my friends and family,” he said. “I’ve lived in the L.A. area for two and a half years now, and every minute I spend there makes me appreciate my hometown more. There is such a sense of community here and people are happier. They genuinely want to know what they can do for you. In L.A., everyone just wants to know what you can do for them.”

In fact, O’Connell arranged for a long weekend visit during Mother’s Day so that he could celebrate it with his mom, Kathy, along with his dad, Mark, and sisters Amy, Abby and Anna. He arranges his travel schedule so that he can visit at least every three to four months, and maintains close friendships with grade school, high school and college classmates and teammates. Although he is now a musician who sings and plays guitar and keyboards, he was never involved in music or theatre at Cathedral High School or Purdue University. And while no one else in his family plans to follow him into the film and television industries. Ball State football fans can enjoy listening to his dad doing color commentary during the games.

O’Connell hopes to one day make the Midwest his home base and only maintain a small place on the west coast. When asked how he would describe himself, he modestly replies, “I’m just a regular guy from the Midwest. I like to appreciate the small things, and I believe in giving back. I think you have to live each day like it’s your last.”

Good things do happen to good people.

Good sport

It is our position that a parent’s job as a positive role model for their children should extend to the athletic field. Children are entering the wide world of sports at younger ages than ever before. The wide world of sports also is expanding beyond interscholastic athletics into club sports and travel teams faster than Olympic record-holder Carl Lewis ran the 100 meter. And with all the added competition, the sports crowd seems to scream louder and stronger, in particular the parents.

Maybe it’s the exorbitant cost of all this extra play time and travel or latently living out a youthful dream, but some parents are losing sight of what interscholastic athletics are all about. When parents rant and rave from the sidelines, it is not only distracting for the players, coaches and officials, it is embarrassing for their children. It ruins the sport experience for everyone. A parent’s role is to support, encourage, act as interpreter and be a positive sports parent role model for their children, according to The National Federation of High School Associations based in Indianapolis.

The government gorilla Commentary by Terry Anker Some 225 years ago, Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to James Madison, opened with, “I own I am not a friend to a very energetic government.

It is always oppressive.” He was talking about the overreach of the aggressive bureaucrats of the day. With reports of secret government investigations of news gathering agencies and evidence of widespread use of the Internal Revenue Service to prevent the civil formation of groups that might resist broad government expansion (including but not limited to those associated with the historic Boston Tea Party which rebelled against the tyrants of that time), Jefferson’s remarks to his friend is equally relevant today.

Even if we assumes good intentions, can government (or really any institution) be expected to constrain its thirst for power and the expansion of its role? Early in my career, I worked with then Indianapolis Mayor Steve Goldsmith’s efforts to review and reform regulation in the Circle City.

Some of the code had been on the books for

decades and failed to serve any constructive purpose (sometimes it had even become destructive). As a part of the process, I interviewed and worked with scores of long-time bureaucrats and functionaries of the administrative state. There was almost uniform belief that the job being done was important – in some cases, almost a religious commitment to the cause was noted. And, it was not difficult to identify people eager to improve the function of the state.

Yet, when the bureaucratic apparatus felt threatened, it, perhaps understandably, recoiled.

The same leaders who sought the very best contract to save money on pens for the office, would defend to the death entire superfluous departments. Should we be surprised that an 800 pound gorilla becomes dangerous when it is annoyed?

We disagree with the Carmel Board of Public Works’ recent decision to deny Detour – An American Grill’s request to close Second Avenue NW in order to host an Indy-car Pole Day party last week. A family oriented event.

Yes, bands could have played into the night.

Gasp!

At the root of the decision were a slew of noise complaints in 2012. Again, in 2012. Mayor Jim Brainard told us that our cover story (Current, May 14) had a subjective statement in it, that if Detour were to close it would adversely affect the Arts & Design District, “which continues to have issues attracting businesses.” That part was incorrect, so we apologize. Brainard cited more than 200 businesses in the district, an at-capacity Indiana Design Center, Sophia Square and Barrett and Stokely apartments fully leased as well as Old Town Design Group building new homes inside the arches. Can’t dispute that.

It is our opinion that the events Detour wants to make available are lively – OK, noisy to some – but represent the true essence of what the district should be. No, certainly not Broad Ripple, but a beehive of activity … which it most certainly is not. It’s why we located here, to be a part of the vibrancy (that does not yet exist). Except for the Carmel International Arts Festival and the gallery walks, our take is that the district offers no real hum, buzz or magnetism. Yes, people frequent the art galleries and shops, but there is a paucity of live entertainment. As to the noise component, this is a district in the heart of a city!

We truly believe residents should have braced for occasional decibel increases when they decided to locate in the district.

In the end, what exactly is the vision? Roll up the sidewalks at 9 p.m. and go quaint and cozy? That would be a horrible decision.

Seriously, what’s so bad about it?

I was talking with a friend last weekend who insisted that my articles have become somewhat vanilla in flavor. “I really like humor it when you stir things a bit; it makes me happy to know that suburban housewives everywhere are condemning you to hell.” Those weren’t her exact words of course, but the sentiment was the same. So here you go, APC of Carmel. I’ll be sure to forward all of the hate mail to you.

Why do people get so worked up over pornography? And for that matter, since when did the diary of Anne Frank become eligible for book burning due to its pornographic material? No kidding, a woman in Michigan has filed a complaint with her city council because she feels like the material is too explicit in nature for her precious little seventh-grader. Not the stuff on Nazi-occupied Europe or the Holocaust, mind you, but the part where Anne is just expressing her feelings about her body like every other teenage girl who has ever walked on this planet. If this is porn, then I guess we’ll have to start carding purchasers of root beer.

Remember Judy Blume? She’s the whole reason I became an avid reader back in middleschool. I’d finally found an author who was telling it like it was, and in ways I could relate.

Now, some of her novels were fairly mature in nature, so I can understand why they weren’t on my sixth-grade reading list. But Anne Frank?

Seriously? My only solace is knowing that she’s made such a ridiculous ruckus about the book that every kid for miles will be dying to read it.

I also find it hilarious that she’s naïve enough to think her son hasn’t already been exposed to pornography before. With the internet and cable mini-series, porn is not only everywhere but also easily accessible to even the youngest of the tech savvy.

Which leads me back to my initial question: What’s the big deal anyway?

Who cares if someone wants to spice up their love life with a little “Sex and the City” or “Fifty Shades of Grey?” As long as it’s experienced in moderation among adults, like alcohol and gambling, porn seems as harmless a vice as any.

I’m not condoning daily visits to the Kitty Kat Lounge & Cinema, but I just don’t see the problem with a subscription to Penthouse. And, I definitely wouldn’t label “The Diary of Anne Frank” as porn. Clearly, this mom needs to spend some quality alone time at her computer. Peace out.

Art, cats, pies: My inspiration Commentary by Dick Wolfsie

Sometimes, when I am trying to think of an idea for my column, I just stare at the wall.

That’s not a bad thing, because humor on the wall in my home office is a collection of special pieces of memorabilia that inspire me to write, reminding me of the talented people I have had the privilege to meet…

Letter from Steve Allen: I always revered Steve Allen. In 1988 we did a show together to commemorate the opening of MGM theme parks in Orlando. During the interview, I imitated one of his classic TV bits when he would get irate at stuff in the news and throw the paper down in mock anger. Two weeks later, I got a personal note from Mr. Allen saying that he had seen the video and thought it was “very funny.” I only look at that letter when I wake up every morning and before I go to bed.

Art Buchwald display: When Art Buchwald was in a hospice in 2005, I wrote a story about how he influenced me. I sent him a copy of the piece along with a photo of us together in 1968 in his Washington, D.C., office. Buchwald responded to my letter by sending the column back with his autograph and a note: “Glad you made it as a writer… I was sure you’d be arrested for holding up 7-Elevens.” All my Buchwald memorabilia is now in a huge frame. How big? My wife wants to take it down someday and install a bay window,

instead.

Garfield drawing: After I interviewed cartoonist Jim Davis, he left for a meeting. But I had forgotten to ask him to draw Garfield as part of the taped segment. His assistant called Mr. Davis, who then graciously turned his car around and came back to his office to do the drawing for me.

This always reminds me what a genuinely nice guy Mr. Davis is. No fat cat, there.

Champion beagle: Cartoonist Gary Varvel celebrated the winner of the 2010 Westminster Dog Show with a drawing of the winning pooch in sunglasses standing by a newspaper stand that heralded his victory, the first time a beagle had ever taken top prize. The caption: Joe Cool.

Gary sent the original to me in memory of my old pal Barney, who never won a ribbon… just a few thousand hearts.

Finally, I have on my wall a signed comic strip from cartoonist Charles Schulz, a thank-you gift from his corporate office after an interview. I asked a friend who is an autograph expert to appraise it. He told me it was probably not Schulz’s signature, but was signed instead by his secretary. How much is it worth? Peanuts, he told me.

Resident Mike Culver expresses his concerns about the city’s decision to deny Detour’s request to close 2nd Avenue NW for special events, and City Councilman Ron Carter addresses Culver’s concerns in the following two letters to the editor.

Please reconsider Detour’s request

An open letter to the city officials of Carmel, I am a homeowner that resides in the Carmel Arts & Design District. Neither I, nor any friend or family member, is in Reader’s view any way shape or form associated with the Detour restaurant.

Prior to making my home in Carmel, I lived in Michigan. Unlike Michigan, Carmel does not have lakes and beaches. I lived in California. Carmel does not have ocean views or mountains. What it does have is a vibrant plan to make living in suburbia more than just rows of houses and strip malls. I have seen that forward-thinking plan - specifically the Monon Trail and Community Center, the City Center and the Carmel Arts & Design District turn Carmel into one of the most unique suburban communities in America and a truly awesome place for a family to call home.

Recently, I have learned of the city’s decision to keep 2nd Avenue NW open for the summer of 2013 in response to noise complaints from some local residents. I find it extremely disappointing that the city would take this rather drastic action instead of finding a solution that can both solve any perceived noise problems and allow the area to thrive.

I ask that city officials please reconsider this decision in order to help the Arts District grow into what it can; one of the most unique and vibrant locations ever seen in American

suburbia. Please give the leadership of Detour another chance to work with you in creating a compromise that works in the best interest of the district as a whole, rather than allow individual residents with their individual complaints to determine policy changes. By closing 2nd Avenue NW, what is created is nothing short of a community patio, complete with occasional live music on weekends for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy. This decision is a critical component to the future success of the entire Arts District - not just the Detour restaurant.

It is also important to note that 2nd Avenue NW, when open, is a tragic accident waiting to happen. Children throughout the summer run around enjoying the area between the Sophia Square fountain and the Monon Trail, rarely realizing that they are actually crossing a functioning road. The area, as a whole, appears much more like a backyard patio than it does a street. It has absolutely no lines or a curb to distinguish it as an actual roadway.

I have seen countless suburbs across America and have rarely seen anything as unique and positively energetic as the intersection of the Monon and Main Street last summer. Please reconsider.

We have considered and reconsidered Mr. Culver, Thank you for taking the time to send us your thoughts. This issue has been going on since Detour opened. It is not new and did not arise just over the past few weeks. Do you really think the BPW would have denied these requests without there already having been significant attempts to educate the owners, managers and staff of Detour? Do you think there had not been numerous attempts to reach a solution that would take into consideration all stakeholders?

Let me be very plain. Numerous attempts have been made. However, Detour is intent on staying, hard and fast, with their concept. That is a concept that is not compatible with the Arts District mixed-use concept.

I can tell you that I don’t appreciate Detour’s continuing attempts to portray this noise situation as being based on the complaints of only two people. Whether that is the case or not really does not matter when I get personally called

out of bed on a cold fall night at 1 a.m. because of the noise coming through the closed overhead doors of the establishment. I would be happy to show you the video on my phone taken at that hour from across the street and across the Monon in which you can clearly hear the band.

When I went inside to tell the manager they were in violation of the noise ordinance and just good sense, she was not real friendly. That, by the way, was months after the Detour management had a meeting with the mayor in which they promised “to be better neighbors.”

Because Carmel does not have the physical features that Michigan possesses, we try to have the best overall quality of life. Right now, Detour’s idea of good quality of life is not consonant with what the vast majority of our citizens want.

Noblesville artists among Indiana’s finest

By Mark Johnson • mark@youarecurrent.com Exactly what is it about art and artists that intrigues us so? What drives artists to create works that are by turns Diversions beautiful, poignant, provocative and even controversial?

Perhaps the best source for those answers lies with the artists themselves.

For Noblesville artists Henry Bell and Rodney Reveal the answer is not as complex as one might think. Both artists are driven by their love of art.

Both Bell and Reveal will have their artwork featured in the Indiana Artists Club’s 81st Annual Exhibition. The exhibition, which opened on April 12 and runs through June 19 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, 4000 Michigan Rd., Indianapolis, is the creation of the Indiana Artists Club. The organization was founded in 1917 by a group of artists and patrons. Known at first as the Indiana Art Club, the group would soon rechristen itself the Indiana Artists Club to denote an organization of professional artists. Their mission is to sponsor statewide exhibitions, while also serving as a network for both its members and other professional artists.

“I don’t consider myself to be a great artist,” Bell said, explaining his work. “The main reason is I enjoy it.”

Bell, who moved from Pennsylvania to Indiana in 1968 at age 16, spent 14 years as both a teacher and principal before turning to painting.

“I actually started painting before I quit teaching,” he said. “I had begun five years before, studying with Floyd Hopper.”

Bell credits the renowned Hopper as an important influence on both himself and other area artists.

“Floyd is responsible for many painters here in Hamilton County,” he said.

Yet, Bell offers another revelation when speaking of his two favorite styles, realism and abstract.

“People were surprised that I taught myself to do both,” he said. “With abstract, there’s always a surprise element. For me, the abstracts are more for the competition. I also use the abstracts because it helps people to open their

eyes to more than just realism.”

Still, even with that surprise element, Bell hopes his work meets with the approval of patrons.

“You want people to like, enjoy, appreciate and admire what you work so hard to do,” he said.

Reveal also appreciates what he describes as the “reaction” to his art.

“Sometimes it has to do with a person’s history, something they can relate to because it reminds them of something special. So, someone has a reaction, an emotional connection to it. Sometimes it may even be something negative,” he said.

Like Bell, Reveal, a native of Noblesville, also studied with Hopper. A retired firefighter, Reveal began his art career in high school before receiving a full scholarship to the California College of Arts in Oakland. He is known mostly for his paintings of nature and landscapes. Working in the company of other artists also is of great significance to Reveal.

“Networking is very important. It’s hard if you isolate yourself because you want to sell, exhibit, show you art. It gives your art validation,” he said. “You learn from other artists, their techniques. You compete against each other, but you also respect and support each other. It’s a friendly rivalry. It’s the camaraderie that makes it worthwhile.”

Reveal cites that camaraderie as the best part of being chosen for the Annual Exhibit.

“It’s the fellowship with other artists, doing cross research in the art world. It’s more networking,” he said.

For Reveal, though, perhaps the biggest reward remains the power to stir with his art.

“With personal art, anytime you inspire some sort of thought or have some sort of effect, it’s a good thing,” he said. “Because then you have a feeling of contributing something.”

fundraisers Bike event to benefit St. Jude – The Memorial Day Give Hope Ride biking event presented by Fritz in Fishers is organized to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The event will be in Fishers Heritage Park, and will feature an adult ride, a kids’ bike safety class and a family ride.

The adult ride will start from Fishers Heritage Park at 8 a.m. with on-site registration at 7 a.m. Adult riders may choose from four courses through Fishers and the surrounding area. Children can participate in a kids’ bike safety class at the center of the park at 10:30 a.m. Every child participating in the class will receive a Bike Safety Certificate. serves 4 Ingredients: • 2 pounds fresh ground turkey • 1 cup crumbled gorgonzola cheese • 1 large granny smith apple – cored and sliced vertically into 4 slices • 1 large Vidalia or sweet onion thinly sliced • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons brown sugar • Salt/pepper • Optional – 4 serving buns Directions: Mix together the turkey and gorgonzola, (salt and pepper to taste), gently to leave chunks of the cheese. Make four patties.

In a small pan, sauté the onions with the olive oil until just browned and add brown sugar to coat. Prepare grill and brush lightly the burgers and apple slices with olive oil. Cook burgers on medium heat until completely done - about 5 minutes each side. Grill apples for 1 to 2 minutes on each side. Serve burgers with the apple and a dollop of the onions on top.

Serve on a bun or in a stack.

Cooking tip: When cooking burgers of any type on the grill, be sure to place them over an even heat area. You can even rotate the burger half way as it cooks on each side to ensure even cooking. Keep all burgers refrigerated until ready to grill.

Mustard Glazed Salmon

serves 4 Ingredients: • (4) 8 ounce salmon filets/skin removed • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar • 1 tablespoon honey • 2 tablespoons butter • ¼ cup Dijon mustard • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (sodium free) • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 tablespoons ginger (dry) • Pepper to taste Directions: Melt butter, honey and brown sugar on low heat in saucepan. Remove from heat and whisk in all remaining ingredients.

Cool. Reserve half of the glaze for later. Prepare grill to a medium heat. Rub small amount of olive oil on one side of fish, place on grill.

Brush on half of the glaze, grill for 6 minutes or your preferred doneness and turn over just once for 1 minute to brown the glaze. Drizzle

remaining glaze over salmon as served.

Treating skin pigment problems

By Dr. Jodi Harper and Dr. Angela Corea Treating pigment-related skin conditions like sun spots can actually be one of the most dramatic improvements DERMATOLOGY in the overall tone and youthfulness of skin.

Skin cells called melanocytes produce pigment called melanin, which is the source of skin’s color and a key component of defense against UV exposure. This pigment production can also be the result of exposure to heat and hormonal shifts. When melanocytes no longer respond to the normal rules of growth and melanin production, perhaps from repeated UV damage, they can result in malignancy.

It is important to consult with a physician to rule out any suspicion for abnormal lesions, such as melanoma, before undergoing any cosmetic treatment. A yearly dermatologic skin check and proper sunscreen is always recommended. Always be careful if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

For benign, unwanted pigment concerns, one can be fairly aggressive with laser treatments. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), a flashlamp device, is probably the most popular procedure used for the treatment of pigment. It involves targeting and breaking down the melanin pigment in the skin. Patients

Where sacred meets profane Commentary by Don Knebel

It is not unusual for people to attend a church as an act of penance. But the Basilica of Sacre Coeur, a multi-domed cathedral on Travel Montmartre, the highest hill in Paris, turns that tradition on its head.

This beautiful church, built in an area notorious for its lack of piety, is itself the penance.

In the early 1800s, artists came to the rural area surrounding Montmartre to paint its picturesque farms and windmills. That area, also called Montmartre, eventually became part of the city and a popular home for artists and philosophers, famous for its Bohemian lifestyle. Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh and Picasso all found inspiration in Montmartre and its people.

In 1871, working class Parisians mounted an armed rebellion against the local government and its supporters in the church. Because of its strategic location, some of the earliest and fiercest fighting took place on Montmartre. In what became known as the “Paris Commune,” insurgents seized control of the city and executed its archbishop.

But in only two months, the revolt was crushed by national troops, with unknown thousands of insur-

With the rebellion over, the National Assembly, encouraged by church leaders, decreed that all French citizens atone for the excesses of the Commune and the ideas that had spawned it.

Eager to earn God’s forgiveness, the French people came forward with donations sufficient to build a cathedral on Montmartre, in the very heart of the insurrection. Sacre Coeur, named for the Sacred Heart of Jesus and reminiscent of the Taj Mahal, was started in 1875 and completed in 1914 at a cost of seven million francs The Montmartre area retains much of the freewheeling character it had in the 19th century, with topless bars and adult entertainment drawing tourists from all around the world. But today, a funicular runs up Montmartre to Sacre Coeur in 90 seconds, making it easy for revelers to seek absolution before leaving for the quieter parts of Paris.

The sacred and the profane are rarely closer.

Know your caregiver’s policies on raw feeding Commentary by John Mikesell

Owners of raw-fed and minimally-vaccinated dogs may face frustrating obstacles.

Many owners of raw-fed therapy pets dogs are being told they can no longer volunteer in hospital settings, and many choose to stop volunteering rather than feed kibble.

Raw pet food is not the only vector that could potentially transmit Salmonella to a dog and then patient; many dry dog foods have been recalled during the past year due to possible Salmonella contamination. Proper precautions can protect patients from becoming infected with Salmonella from a therapy dog visit.

There are some emergency clinics that will not accept a raw-fed dog. Some clinics may only admit a raw-fed dog on the condition that his owner consent to feeding the dog whatever the hospital feeds while hospitalized, likely a commercial kibble, which from a holistic point of view is often the least healing diet a dog might have during such a stressful time.

It would be prudent, therefore, for the owners of raw-fed dogs to check with any local emergency and specialty veterinary clinics that are likely to treat their dogs so they will not be surprised in an emergency situation.

Vaccinations can be another area where the holistic minded find themselves battling rules.

Boarding kennels, obedience schools, groomers and other canine businesses that require vaccinations just can’t dismiss their rules. But, often they will accept documentation that shows that the dog is otherwise protected. I have papers to show that my dog is protected.

It is ultimately up to the owner and his or her veterinarian to decide what is best for their pet.

It is proven over and over that the devil is in the detail – especially when it comes to good design. decoratinG When a space has a good structure but it still lacks the panache needed to take your breath away, it might just be the right finishing touches that are missing.

A little tweak here and the right change there will add energy and style to your room.

Upholstery • One of the easiest is to update with pillows.

Consider shapes other than the square. One of my favorites is the ball shaped pillow.

• These same pillows can trumpet in a new color palette. The drama of a monochromatic room that features a piece of art bursting with color can be completed by repeating the hues in the pillow fabric.

• Peek under the skirt of a dated sofa to see what it would look like if reupholstered without the skirt. Sometimes it is possible to go a step further and actually replace the legs of a sofa for a more updated look.

Art • Remove art prints under glass and replace with original art even if you need to be the artist. Reserve glass for photos, pen and ink, and water color. Original art has soul that that is lacking in a print of even a fine master.

• Art could be as simple as a framed handwritten note from a loved one or a meaningful quote.

• Overlap and layer empty frames painted in bold accent colors.

• Try leaning your artwork rather than hanging and layering accessories in front of it.

Flooring • Refinish hardwood floors if the luster is gone and the scratches prevail. Beautiful wood makes a room.

• Change an area rug if it’s looking tired and dated.

Lighting • Retire dusty, dated ivory lamp shades for some of the newer linen barrel shades.

Question: “How about the proper use of ‘hanged’ versus ‘hung?’ It seems to be the most misused word ever.” grammar guy (Richard L. Beltzhoover, Carmel) Answer: How about it, then? I think we should be able to hang this one up rather succinctly.

“Hanged” and “hung” are both past and past participle forms of the verb “to hang,” which, for the good of the order, means “to fasten from above with no support from below” or “to suspend.” A “Hang” is also a UFO-shaped steel drum that was invented in Switzerland (naturally), but that’s not what we’re talking about right now.

Most of the time, and certainly in all of your less macabre occasions, the past tense form of “hang” you want is “hung.” If you nailed a picture to a wall last week, you hung it. If you were sad about your favorite team losing a game, you may have hung your head. I suppose if you’re an eclectic Swiss musician you could have hung your Hang on its rack. At any rate, “hung” should Billboard impact – A study by researchers at the University of Alberta has found that billboards with negative and positive words or dispatches images impact how people drive.

Negative words cause drivers to slow, and positive ones lead to putting the pedal to the metal. – www.living.msn.com

It’s probably not the word you’re looking for when you’re talking about a remodeling job (and if it is, take a step back and a deep breath … you will eventually get that room repainted).

In short, nine times out of 10 you probably want the word “hung.” It’s the word you use when you’re putting up decorations or placing a medal around a champion’s neck. If you’re using “hanged,” someone has bought the farm, so to speak. And that’s that.

Great design creates memories

This delicious project commenced during a few years with multiple phases. We love phased projects. It allows us to get to know the appreciative homeowners deeper, OUTdoors create lasting friendships and learn living patterns which often prompt us to tweak future phases.

The original phase called for the architecturally-relevant screened porch addition with a very edgy, Azek decking-clad grill station nestled inside. Nestled implies tucked in and cozy. This 16-foot by 20-foot generous floor plan was anything but cramped for space. The late setting sun beaming into the porch was welcome, but mitigated with jazzy drapes that the Mrs. sourced.

Thanks Angie. It adds lots of elegant drama and a fantastic designer’s touch.

Third quarter 2012 called for the classic clay paver patio installation with all the hoped for embellishments - a two post cedar pergola with a suspended authentic wooden swing, rustic boulder fire pit that screams rebellion and an excuse to party, romantic night lighting, “just in case,” and the correct volume of color/texture/ evergreen from the surrounding landscape.

Don’t forget the privacy that seems to magically happen. And that is exactly how it was planned, natural privacy, not forced.

It finalized a few weekends ago with a son graduating from Ball State University and a giga-

byte of thrilled relatives congregating for the proud weekend. For whatever reason, the night lighting system was not cooperating, and we received a hopeful call to troubleshoot before guests arrived in a few hours. Imagine that a cute little critter had chomped the low voltage line into a crumbly mess.

A quick repair set the stage for a wonderful celebration in this incredible outdoor living space.

That is what I love about correctly designed and

Ceiling lighting can’t be ignored

Ceiling light fixtures are key decorative elements that many homeowners tend to gloss over when building or remodeling a space. Not only do they properly illuminate indoors the room, but carefully chosen lighting fixtures can also tie together various design elements into a cohesive, final look. If you make a decision without careful consideration, you may be left with fixtures that seem out of place or poorly thought out.

The first step in choosing an effective ceiling light is analyzing the specific lighting needs of the room. For example, kitchens often require very bright lighting to make cooking and entertaining easier. Bedrooms may require dimmer lights to create a relaxing, comforting atmosphere. You’ll also need to take into account the amount of natural lighting that’s already present.

Select a fixture that complements the overall décor of the room and your home in general.

Style, shape, color and size all play an important role in creating a fixture’s look, so pay attention to all of these elements. Popular ceiling fixture options include: Chandelier: Make an elegant, showy statement in your room by hanging a chandelier. Ideally, the bottom of the chandelier should hang at least 7 feet above the floor, so people can walk comfortably beneath it. If hung over a table or piece of furniture, the fixture should hang 27

Pendant lights: These are perfect for spaces or areas that need direct overhead lighting, such as over a kitchen island or a wet bar. Measure and hang pendant lights like you would install a chandelier.

Ceiling mounts: If you’re looking for a more subtle design, mounted ceiling fixtures may work well. They come in countless shapes and styles, so you’re sure to find one that works well with your décor. Ceiling mounts offer more of a design impact than recessed lighting, without attracting as much visual interest as chandelier or pendants lights.

Ceiling fan: Can be great for lighting and regulating the temperature of a room. But choose carefully because fans tend to collect dust and create noise. Opting for a quality fan would be well worth the investment.

Lastly, you’ll need to consider the types of bulbs each fixture requires. Different types of bulbs emit different colors of light, so the feel of your room will change slightly depending of the type of bulb you select. You may also want to consider energy-efficient bulbs to decrease energy costs for your home.
