Butler top 100 – Six students from the Carmel/ Westfield area were recently named to the list of Top 100 achievers at Butler University, which has approximately 4,700 students. Making the list were Courtney Boyle, Hitesh Dube, Deena Elsahy, Jared Isenthal and Alex Morris, all of Carmel, and Lauren Chapman of Westfield.

Sertoma award winner – The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple recently held its annual National Heritage essay contest, “What Freedom Means to Me.” A total of 532 essays were submitted by sixth-graders from Indianapolis area schools.

The grand prize winner was Ben Batchelder of Clay Middle School. Sertoma is a service club dedicated to helping people with speech and hearing disorders, as well as sponsoring projects that promote freedom and democracy.

CHS marching band heading to Pasadena

By Liz Schrader • news@currentincarmel.com The Carmel Greyhound marching band will be one of just 14 student high school bands from around the world performing in the 125th SchoolS Tournament of Roses parade on Jan. 1, 2014, in Pasadena, Calif.

As the 2012 grand national champion of the Music for All Bands of America competition, the band was invited to participate for the first time in the world-renowned parade which will include 50 flowerdecorated floats, 20 bands, 15 horse units and will be broadcast to 407 million people worldwide.

“Carmel is one of the best high school bands in the country, and we’re thrilled to have them participate in our parade. It’s an extraordinary opportunity to have the city of Carmel represented on worldwide television at the Rose Parade: the granddaddy of them all,” said Scott Jenkins, the 2013-14 tournament president who visited Carmel two weeks ago to help the band with fundraising efforts for the event.

The band, comprised of 245 students, will travel with around 500-600 chaperones, parents and staff to Pasadena the week leading up to the annual

Tournament of Roses parade on New Year’s Day. It will cost $2,300 per student to travel to and perform in the event, and the band will be doing various fundraisers throughout the year to offset the cost.

According to Carmel Bands Booster President Tim Dawson, the students will be playing five to six songs in line with this year’s theme of “Dreams Come True.”

The songs will be written by the current director of bands, Richard Saucedo, as the season progresses.

Dawson, who is the father of two Carmel band students, said that rehearsals for the Tournament of Roses Parade and the 2013 Bands of America competition will start once school lets out for the summer and kick up in intensity once school begins in the fall, with daily rehearsals from 3:45 to 6 p.m. and competitions on Saturdays.

“The kids work so hard and put in so much time into practicing,” Dawson said. “You have to be very dedicated to perform at such a high level, and for them to be invited to perform in the Rose Parade is quite an honor.”

Safety award winner – Carmel based Vine & Branch has received the Outstanding Company Contribution Award from the Tree Care Industry Association for the 11th consecutive year. This award recognizes a member business for its proactive program to address safety issues within its own company or within a larger sphere of influence. Clarification – The story about funding for the arts in Carmel (Current in Carmel, Page 3, April 23) mentioned that Civic Theatre Executive Director Cheri Dick and Carmel Symphony Orchestra Alan Davis left the Carmel City Council meeting once the vote on funding was tabled. Dick actually departed for rehearsals at the theatre after she had addressed the councilors, and Davis stayed for the entirety of the meeting. Four students win Rotary award Commentary by Jeff Worrell

It seems too good to be true; but it isn’t.

There really is not just one, but four Carmel High School students who have ACHIEVEMENT earned the Rotary William D. McFadden Student Service Award. A record number of applicants led to a record number of winners. I have extracted quotes from the stacks of letters of recommendation which easily will give you a sense of how lucky we are these students live among us.

Wonderful Words for Emily Beeler: “Emily understands the gift of self to others, from the young children to those that are reaching peer age. Superintendent search continues

A new superintendent search is being mounted by the Carmel Clay School Board. Despite announcing three finalists as a SCHOOLS part of their initial search, board members felt that more time needs to be taken to search for the best possible candidate for the position.

“The board is looking for a good fit. We expect to hire a superintendent whose skills fall in line with the leadership profile posted on our website, who is ready to take the next step in his or her career and who can lead the Carmel schools with passion,” said board member Tricia Hackett in an e-mail last week.

In February of this year, the school board partnered with BWP & Associates, an educational leadership search consultant firm, and began the superintendent search. BWP & Associates was hired under a $16,000 contract.

“The board does not yet know what role (BWP & Associates) will play going forward, but the $16,000 includes their services until a final candidate is selected,” said Tricia Reynolds, CCS Community Relations Coordinator.

The board originally announced three finalists for the superintendent position as part of a “traditional but condensed” superintendent search process in March. In early April, one of the

finalists, New Albany Schools Supt. Dr. Bruce Hibbard, pulled himself from consideration. Hibbard was the only candidate currently working as a superintendent.

After holding such an extensive and public interview process including a public forum for each candidate, many are left to question what went wrong in the initial search and how the board is working for a better outcome moving forward.

“As we do with all initiatives at CCS, time will be devoted to reflecting and learning from this experience,” Hackett said. “The initial search resulted in an excellent leadership profile and exposure among state and national education leaders.”

At this point, many specifics of the new search for a superintendent are still in flux.

“There is not a concrete timeline established yet,” Hackett said. “The timeline is just one piece that is being determined by the board.”

Earlier this year, Dr. Jeff Swensson announced that he would be stepping down as superintendent in June.

Soap drive – The Carmel Girls Lacrosse team collected 110 bottles of much-needed laundry detergent at its home game on April 13. They were donated to the Merciful Help Center in Carmel to give to the 600 families they serve each month. These supplies are not covered as part of any government assistance the patrons might receive. Now through May 9, the team hopes to collect 800 more products.

Lisa Washburn requested the Board’s support for a petition to increase recess from the current 15 minutes. She explained the website rethinkingrecess.org helped “educate school board and gauge public interest” with data and a petition that has earned over 200 signatures.

Four other citizens addressed the Board in support. “As a licensed school counselor,” supporter Nicole Dietrich said, “I feel it’s critical to add at least 15 minutes more to the existing 15 minute recess.”

ACTION: Agreement between county and Carmel Clay An agreement between Hamilton County and Carmel Clay Schools will install an emergency generator at Carmel High School. “Totally at the expense of the Hamilton County Emergency Management Authority,” explained Assistant Superintendent Roger McMichael. Carmel High School is a Red Cross emergency shelter and distribution center in a declared emergency.

ACTION: Nondiscrimination policy approved after two votes, discussion Board member Greg Phillips voted against the revision until fellow members could guarantee the new wording offered “protection to those whose gender identity differed from the traditional.”

President Layla Spanenberg confirmed legal counsel’s revised policy covered all protected classes. “At Carmel Clay schools,” she stated, “we’re making it clear we don’t discriminate against anyone.”

Swensson clarified this would only redistrict elementary students of these new developments and middle school students would attend Creekside.

Board member Patricia Hackett thanked Swensson for planning ahead. Swensson pointed out 12 more complexes in the platting process within this district. Considering this potential growth now could ease enrollment for upcoming school years.

All 15 schools that make up the Carmel Clay Schools system are now equipped with a doorbell SCHOOL safety entry system that allows the schools to keep their front doors locked throughout the day, according to school officials.

Located at the main entrance to each school, the system provides a notification button for visitors. Once activated, the “doorbell” rings in the school office and alerts staff to the visitor. To enter any of Carmel’s 11 elementary schools, three middle schools or high school, visitors must push the doorbell when they arrive at the main entrance. Office staff will then “buzz” them in and direct them to the office where they will begin the Schoolgate Guardian check-in.

The Guardian system quickly scans and processes each visitor’s state issued ID. The system then archives the details of the visit, including the date and time, a photograph of the visitor and who they were there to see.

Also, the visitor’s identity is instantly compared to the national database of more than 704,000 registered sex offenders. If a match occurs, the system displays detailed information about the actual sex offender, such as height, weight, eye color and body markings to help prevent the chance for a false positive.

Authors for Earth Day visit news@currentincarmel.com April Pulley Sayre, who has written more than 50 books for children, visited Mohawk Trails Elementary School on April 23, and in honor of Earth Day, she donated $600 to the Rain Forest Conservation Fund, one of five nonprofit conservation organizations that fifth-grade students researched and presented to their classmates to select, by vote, which they wanted Sayre to support.

“It was so generous of her to make a $600 donation on behalf of our students and to give our fifth-graders the opportunity to do an authentic research project with real-world impact,” said Hella Rumschlag, library media specialist and technology coordinator at MTE. Starting in January, fifthgrade students explored the websites for these five organizations and selected their favorites. They did

research projects to learn more about the organizations and then wrote persuasive presentations. Several fifth-graders even appeared on the school’s live broadcast to persuade other students to vote for their organizations.

The other organizations in the running were: American Bird Conservancy, Elephant Listening Project, Nature Conservancy and the Pollinator Partnership.

Students complete read-a-thon – The students at The Goddard School on Medical Drive in Carmel recently completed a “Reach for the Stars” read-a-thon sponsored by Usborne Books & More. The students and their parents were encouraged to spend at least 300 minutes reading during a two-week period. The participating students read a total of 7,683 minutes, and four students read at least 600 minutes during this program. They are Calem Graves, Stella Johnson, Ashlynn Meyer and Vijay Shukla. The students also collected pledges from their reading sponsors, and 100 percent of the money collected was given back to the students in books for their home libraries.

On April 20, more than 3,500 runners from 39 different states and six countries took part in the third annual Carmel Marathon. Runner Jesse Davis won carmel the marathon with a time of 2 hours, 21 minutes and 49 seconds, beating his previous course record. In 2012, Davis also won the Carmel Marathon and in 2011, he won the Carmel Half-marathon.

George Towett won this year’s half-marathon with a time of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 46 seconds. Pius Nyantika won the KeyBank 8K with a time of 24 minutes and 1 second.

Team Honey Badger won the marathon relay with a time of two hours, 33 minutes, 52 seconds.

Scouting breakfast is record breaker news@currentincarmel.com The eighth annual Carmel Mayor’s Breakfast for Scouting raised more than $32,000, topping last year’s total by about Philanthropy $5,000 making it the largest Breakfast for Scouting event to date.

The breakfast, which was April 18 at the Renaissance Indianapolis North Hotel, celebrated the achievement of several Carmel scouts, including 33 Eagle Scouts named in 2012, leading all Hamilton County communities in both youth members and adult volunteers and having one Eagle Scout, Ben Gormley, complete every Merit Badge in the Boy Scouts of America program.

The ceremony was headed by the breakfast chair, Matt Conrad. Conrad said the motivation for the breakfast was to raise $150,000 through this breakfast and others like it in the surrounding areas.

Another $150,000 is to be raised through donations from businesses. Conrad then introduced the master of ceremonies, Eagle Scout, Carlton Anker from Troop 936.

Troops from the Del-Mi district then presented the colors, lead the pledge and Tyler Freudenthal, an Eagle Scout from Troop 120, opened the breakfast in prayer.

Councilman Ron Carter interviewed two Cub Tolkien lecture – Dr. Peter Kreeft, a philosophy professor at Boston College, will offer an evening program entitled “Catholic Roots of JRR Tolkien.” This lecture will explore the author’s worldview hidden in his works.

The event will be held at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 10655 Haverstick Rd., Carmel, on May 10 at 7 p.m.

“Many, many years ago, when I was in Cub Scouts, we sold marshmallows,” Carter said. “Our pack at Speedway sold 21,000 bags of Curtis Marshmallows.”

Carter demonstrated the immense impact that scouting has on boys’ lives by sharing such fond memories. Smart’s favorite part of Cub Scouts is “camp and bb shooting.”

The interview was followed by a speech by Ben Snyder, an Eagle Scout from Troop 112.

“Scouting can be summed up in two words, being prepared,” Snyder said. “Whether it be at home, in a community, on a battlefield or at the finish line of a marathon, Scouts are ready to answer the call, to respond to effective action and leadership, to be productive members of our community.”

While Mayor Brainard could not attend the breakfast, he filmed a short speech thanking the many donors who helped make the event possible and supported the Scouts.

Brainard talked about his experience of earning his Eagle Scout in the early 70s and his two sons earning theirs in the Carmel area.

“I know through personal experience how important the Scouting program can be in a young persons life and everything it can help them achieve throughout their lifetime,” Brainard said.

Assistance League raises $94k – On April 13, the Assistance League of Indianapolis held a fundraising gala at the Ritz Charles. Guests were treated to an Italian-themed evening of bidding on items at the silent auction, dining and a presentation by emcee Beth Vaughan, morning Vaughan anchor from RTV6 Good Morning Indiana. AAA Hoosier Motor Club was recognized by president Marcia Hoffbauer as a long standing in-kind and financial supporter of Assistance League of Indianapolis. Guests also entered into some friendly competition during a live auction while bidding on items including an apartment in the South of France, Colts suite tickets and dinner for eight by Chef Tony Hanslits. All of this generosity translated into raising about $94,000 to provide services for the socially and economically underserved in central Indiana.

New to the Carmel community is the Klassical Keys piano studio at 1 S. Range Line Rd., Suite 220. now open Klassical Keys owner and instructor Courtney Bray offers an assortment of group workshops and private classes for all ages. In the past, Klassical Keys has taught intro to piano to children as young as three.

“My youngest student right now is 4-years-old, and my oldest student is 87-years-old,” Bray said.

At Klassical Keys, students learn basic piano skills, but they can also learn to write and compose their own music in a composition class.

Being the only instructor, Bray likes to adjust her teaching style to each student’s needs.

Physical therapy giant Athletico opens in Carmel

Carmel-based physical therapist Ara Knepp recently brought the Chicago-area physical therapy giant Athletico to the Hoosier State, opening the Carmel branch at 912 S. Range now open Line Road.

Knepp, who worked for six years as a physical therapist and assistant facility manager at one of Athletico’s 72 Chicagoland locations, has experience in all facets of the field and specializes in sports medicine. As the only therapist in the 3,500-square-foot Carmel branch, she wears many hats.

“As we get more patients, I’ll look to hire on more employees,” she said. “Right now, I do it all.

I’m the facility manager, I do marketing, HR and of course, I treat patients.”

Knepp and her husband moved to Indiana two years ago to be closer to family. She worked at a few different physical therapy clinics in the area, but said she missed Athletico’s business model and mission. While she works under the Athletico name, she said it’s a challenge being the only branch in the area.

As a former physical therapist for the professional soccer team, the Chicago Fire, Knepp said she considers herself an expert in treating runners and offers services catered toward the running population, such as video analysis. Knepp said what differentiates her clinic from others in the area is that it is in network with all major insurance companies and is open on Saturday.

In 2003, one of Eden’s suppliers threatened to file a lien against the reflecting pool due to unpaid payments from Eden, but wasn’t able to follow through because of rules regarding public spaces. In the minutes from the Feb. 12, 2003, CRC meeting, CRC attorney Karl Haas referenced other issues with Eden, “so we need to be careful not to pay them.”

A serious leak was diagnosed early on and finally fixed in 2009.

Stan Schultz, Eden Enterprises’ former principal, was not able to be reached.

The pool has been plagued with problems since even before its construction. Eden Enterprises submitted the winning $1.5-million bid in 2001, slightly less than CSO Architects’ estimate, but later rescinded its bid, which was $200,000 lower than planned. The company would win the second round of bidding as well – much to the city’s later chagrin.

The pool was built using federal park development funds, Heck said.

Both Seidensticker and Wallace say money in the city’s budget needs to be earmarked for routine maintenance needs for the reflecting pool and myriad other projects around the city.

The city is sifting through its 2013 budget to find additional savings for other projects.

“I get the impression this is something the city wants to fix,” Wallace said. “They want this (pool) to be something we can all be proud of.”

After the repair work eventually is completed, Wallace plans to contact local veterans groups for a reopening celebration.

Residents have been complaining about the reflecting pool’s condition for months, but those concerns have only been publicly aired within the last few weeks.

City spokeswoman Nancy Heck said the fountain’s official owner, the Carmel Redevelopment Commission, is coordinating repairs to the reflecting pool which will replace the concrete around the edge with granite. The project has yet to go to bid and no timeline for completion is available. It’s not yet known how much the repair work will cost.

As a matter of routine maintenance, the streets department is draining the 1.5 million gallon reflecting pool and will clean, repaint and refill the pool in the coming weeks.

Kathy Wallace, who has spearheaded citizen calls to fix the pool, called its current condition an “embarrassment” to veterans.

“My family has had veterans in every war,” Wallace said. “When we were walking by the other day, my 18-year-old son said to me, ‘It’s a shame this is how we honor our veterans.’ It’s a pride thing. It’s a shame it’s happened. Whether it’s a poor design or a poor choice of materials, it needs to be fixed.”

Former city councilor and veteran John Acceturro echoed Wallace’s sentiments at the April 15 council meeting.

City Councilor Eric Seidensticker said the coping, a cast simulation of limestone, was improperly installed when the pool was built in 2003.

“It started leaking like a crazy (almost immediately),” Seidensticker said. “The report shows it wasn’t properly cemented underneath. The company that did it had never installed it in the field before.”

Stop child abuse It is our position that immediate action should be taken if a child is suspected of being abused or neglected. Today ends National Child Abuse Prevention Month, though the community should remain under constant vigil.

In just a year, 40 Hoosier children died from abuse and neglect, according to a recent report by the state Dept. of Child Services.

The report indicated that unemployment, low income, substance abuse and domestic violence are factors in many child-abuse deaths. The report also found a pattern of child deaths at the hands of parents’ intimate partners, which is a trend that has continued year to year. DCS says it is asking parents to think carefully about with whom they leave their children.

“When you have a child, and particularly a small child, left in the care of someone with no emotional bond with the child, with low to no parenting skills, and managing multiple stressors, tragedy can happen in an instant,” said John Ryan, DCS chief of staff.

The department is asking that everyone do their part to help protect kids. Pay attention and reach out if you need help or know someone who might.

A matter of perspective Commentary by Terry Anker In conversation today with a local businessman who is preparing to celebrate his 47th wedding anniversary, our attention turned to his advice in maintaining long-term relationships.

As he smiled, he said it was by making the right choice at the beginning. In his firmly Hoosier selfdeprecating way, he went on to credit much of the success of their longevity to his bride. “What a good guy,” I thought. But as my sympathetic interrogatory continued, his detailed answers pointed to something else. Certainly, he had entered a relationship with someone who is committed to relationships. Such a move is always a good thing. But more, he carried into the relationship a strong understanding of the importance of perspective in human interaction.

Even as we peer down from our vantage point, it is easy to forget that there are countless other outlooks from which to gaze. Imagine the scores of interpersonal interactions that take place every day – at the office, at the coffee

counter, with our families. During the course of the many petty irritations and follies that seem to fill our daily routines, it is striking to consider that there are innumerable other lives filled each with its own peccadilloes and interests.

How do people perceive us? Do they even notice that we exist? Is our imagined slight an entirely unintended consequence? Or, are the nefarious perpetrating their own agendas against us?

Can we find comfort in the knowledge that no one can fully understand our point-of-view or invite us into theirs? Or, is this solitary personal isolation frightening? Maybe it’s a matter of perspective. Regardless, learning to get out of our own heads and imagine the view from across the table can only make us better for it.

There has been a slew of reports in national media – print, electronic and social – in recent days about the politicization of budget cuts coming out of Washington. One in particular caught our attention, and that dealt with flight delays (departures and arrivals, naturally) as a result of the furloughing of air traffic controllers.

It should be noted that while travelers were cooling their heels - and presumably trying to stifle their rising tempers on long layovers in overcrowded departure lounges - at many major airports, the U.S. Dept. of Transportation announced a $474-million grant program that promises to “make communities more livable and sustainable.”

That’s. Just. Dandy.

We can cut highly trained and supervised staff, whose responsibility it is to keep the friendly skies all the more friendly, and foist upon the remaining personnel and supervisors an increased burden of undertaking even a larger part of one of the most stressful jobs known to man. But, hey, when there’s a chance to dump hundreds of millions of dollars into “sustainability,” well, that seems to be a no-brainer - for the brainless in Washington.

It seriously continues to amaze us that not too many have vigorously spoken out about the furloughs. Think of it this way: Would you want yourself or your loved one strapped into a jetliner traveling at 400-plus miles per hour under the “watchful” eyes of an overstressed, exhausted ATC employee? We know the answer, but we had to ask. To us, it’s really frightening. Until the staffing levels have been brought back to realistic levels – sorry, airlines – we’re not going to travel by air; it’s all road trips until then.

By the way, did anyone on Capitol Hill or in the White House administration even suggest cutting President Barack Obama’s golf fees from the budget? Didn’t think so.

Please return my money

Editor, I was at the Carmel/Westfield Marsh store on Sunday, and I requested $50 back on my debit card. It had been a long Reader’s view day, and I forgot to take the money. I called Marsh about 10 minutes later and spoke to a very accommodating manager. He watched the video and a person who came in after me took the money, knowing that it belonged to someone else who would come looking for it.

I have called the police and, with the help of

the picture, this person will be caught. To prevent this person from being embarrassed and getting into trouble, I am hoping that the money will be left at the customer service counter in an envelope with my name on it. No questions asked, and I will truly appreciate the honesty.

It is extremely upsetting, but, as I have a very forgiving nature, I will chalk this up to someone who was having a bad day and decided to make it better at the expense of someone else. I am hoping that this person did not think this through.

Our children are safe Editor, Last week, while volunteering in my son’s first grade class, I had the unexpected opportunity to participate in a Lockdown Drill. With the PA system announcing “Lockdown! Lockdown! This is a drill. Lockdown!” I watched a classroom of 6 and 7 years olds take their places as the teacher barricaded the door waiting for the signal to rush the children out of the classroom, out of the school, to safety. I watched my son and his best buddies arm themselves with “sturdy classroom supplies” in order throw at the “intruders.” I watched a young girl clamor on all fours around the room trying to find a place to hide because the teacher instructed “no more than 1 person in a spot, you must spread out!!” Then when assured the “intruders” were a safe distance away, we booked for the exits hoping every child got out safely before the mock intruder reached our hallway. And, standing at the far end of the rainy parking lot, some kiddos still held their Elmer’s glue bottle defense weapons tight in their hands as we waited for the all clear. Tears teetered in my eyes. My son’s teacher’s hands were shaking.

It was a drill. But it felt real for this mom looking at her son and trying to imagine where my other child

was at this moment. Did she get out or was she still in her room?

It was impossible to experience this and not be reminded of the events at Sandy Hook Elementary School. It was impossible not to imagine the terror of the those students and teachers in that moment and every moment since the tragedy.

While I am deeply saddened and truly troubled our children have to practice lockdown drills – that these are a quarterly occurrence, which my children now take in stride – I am amazed and relieved how well the drill was executed. I left the school emotionally shaken but entirely confident in the Carmel Clay administrators and teachers to take care of our children to the best of their abilities.

Thank you Carmel Clay Schools; thank you to the administrators, resource officers, teachers, staff and facility managers for making these drills a priority.

I hugged the stuffing out of my kids when they came home that day, and, today, I continue my hourly prayers that we never need to take these exercises beyond the drill stage.

I hate it, but I have to

Recently I’ve noticed a strange occurrence. My stomach will begin to hurt after I’ve been sitting for any length of time. At first, I humor thought it was too-tight jeans, but then I realized the pain would arrive with any number of pants or skirts that fastened at the waist. Conclusion: my clothes are shrinking!

I suppose there is another explanation for this disturbing phenomenon: I might possibly, perhaps, be gaining an ever-so-slight bit of weight; which would make sense because I basically stopped all forms of exercising after I survived the mini-marathon last May. True, I do attend weekly geriatric yoga and occasionally walk the dog around our basketball goal, but for my body type, the lack of aerobic activity is finally starting to show.

And what really ticks me off is that the pounds aren’t going where I need them most. My face and chest could actually stand to be a little plumper, while my thighs and behind are already plenty large. But nooooo, become a couch potato and the new fat immediately heads for his friends.

The only solution (besides giving up my nightly cherry pop tart and glass of milk, and that ain’t gonna happen) is to start an exercise program, but I’m seriously lacking the motivation. I already ran the marathon and took on P90X. And my

clothes do still fit, albeit a little more snuggly.

Plus, I have to consider two significant physical defects: my crappy knees and reduced bladder control. No jumping jacks for this girl!

Swimming is a great option, but laps in a pool are so high maintenance. Drying and de-frizzing my ginger hair alone can take a full 30 minutes!

Who’s got the time for that? Speaking of time, a serious “lack thereof” is another one of my excuses. For me, working out has to occur in the morning, because once evening hits, my life revolves around kids and husband and wine. But I hate waking up early, especially to [gulp] exercise.

Regardless, I must think of something. I’ve always been in good shape and like knowing that when the Zombie Apocalypse comes, I’ll be able to run for the hills (or cornfields). Right now, I’d barely reach the nearest round about before collapsing in a pile of stretch marks and hyperventilation. I suppose I could start with some hard-core walking; maybe throw in some light dumbbells to tighten the ol’ triceps. It’s not glamorous, but if it’ll help me outrun a dead person and keep clothing from cutting off my circulation, I’m in. Power walking, here I come! Peace out.

Backyard checks required

I have never aerated my lawn. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever written the word “aerated” before.

If I did, I am sure I misspelled it. humor I think I accidentally went from liquefy to aerate while making a strawberry shake in our blender. That’s the extent of my experience.

Despite many years as a homeowner, I first learned about lawn aeration the other day when my wife and I arrived home from a Sunday brunch and saw our neighbor, John, wrestling with what appeared to be a 200-horsepower lawn machine. The really strange part was that John was not aerating his own lawn, but rather Herb’s lawn– an apparent act of great selflessness, unless you saw he had simply lost control of the behemoth and was desperately trying to steer the machine back to his own front yard.

Then Marty, watching John from his living room window, came outside to request that he be given a chance to aerate. Herb also wanted in.

This scam was so ingenious that it made Tom Sawyer look like an amateur.

John tried to explain to me why it’s important to aerate a lawn, but most of the explanation required that I actually listen. He did say something about golf greens that got my attention.

And I kept hearing the word “plugs,” which made me mildly interested because I once had a hair

transplant.

I watched Herb try to aerate. Herb, who can only claim 5-foot-8-inches in his wife’s high heels, was being whipped into unspeakable contortions and had to push the emergency button after he aerated Marty’s newly paved driveway.

I’m opposed to deadly asphalt weapons, but John told me that the Second Amendment covers lethal lawn equipment, as well.

After observing my neighbors gleefully involved in raising their testosterone levels, I agreed to try aeration myself. I declined doing my own lawn, having arranged several years ago for nine moles to do the job for me. I took hold of the handles, pressed the bar and was quickly propelled into action.

I had never realized how exciting it would be to poke holes in a neighbor’s lawn. It was fun, but four seconds was long enough. John could see I was uncomfortable with an aerator in the neighborhood, but he put my mind at ease. “Aerators don’t poke holes in lawns. People poke holes in lawns,” he told me. That made in feel a little better. But I still think there should be backyard checks on people who want to own aerators.

No actual crickets are involved Commentary by Mike Redmond

Baseball season is here and so our thoughts turn to cricket, a game that is just like baseball except for the myriad ways in humor which it is not.

Cricket jumps up, so to speak, because there is a movement underway (as opposed to underfoot) to make Indianapolis, a city familiar to most of us, the Cricket Capital Of The World. This would only add to the luster of a city already known as the Euchre and Pork Tenderloin Sandwich Capital.

Of course, the 14 people in Indianapolis who understand and like cricket are thrilled. The rest of us are mystified, which seems the only reasonable reaction.

To Americans raised on a sports diet of baseball, basketball, football and hockey, cricket is the sort of thing that causes headaches if you try to figure it out for yourself. Here are some things you need to know about cricket: 1. It is not baseball. We’ve covered this already.

2. The teams consist of 11 players on each side. Positions include the bowler, the catcher, wicket keeper, long stop, slips, right bower, left out, guy over here, guy over there, upper and lower squamish, and designated jiminy (American League only).

3. It is the only game named after a bug. It

chose this unusual name because all the good ones (horse racing, cards, Steve) were already taken.

4. To the untrained eye, a match looks as if one person throws the ball in a most peculiar galloping overhand motion, and a man wielding a fraternity paddle tries to hit it back at him, after which people clap politely. It also looks this way to the trained eye.

5. No actual crickets are involved.

OK, time out, or whatever they say in cricket.

Let me clear up a couple of things. I know there are more than 14 people in Central Indiana who like cricket. In fact, it’s a tribute to our growing international community that this Cricket Capital Of The World idea even took root. Great for us that we have such interesting people who have come to live among us, and I mean it.

So here’s to you, Central Indiana cricket hopefuls. I hope your fast bowlers come through and your batsmen guide the good length balls to wherever they’re supposed to go and wickets are taken. Play ball, have at it, chirp, or whatever it is you crickets say.

Vegetables can be the stars Commentary by Claudia Pierson When we think of grillget cooking ing, we immediately think of meats and fish it seems.

Yet, there is a whole world of wonderful grill options for the other parts of the meal. Hope you will enjoy these unique recipes.

Grilled vegetable salad

serves 4-6 You may skewer the veggies or place directly on grill.

Ingredients: 1 cup gorgonzola cheese, 1 yellow and 1 red pepper - sides cut and halved, 6 quartered Yukon gold potatoes, 1 sweet potato in large cubes, 1 leek quartered lengthwise, 1 bunch asparagus trimmed, 1 yellow squash cubed Marinade/dressing: 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup dry white wine, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon fresh diced tarragon, 1 tablespoon diced sage, 1 tablespoons diced rosemary, Salt and pepper Directions: Marinate vegetables for about 15 minutes in half of the mixture. Shake off excess dressing and grill until slightly charred – about 15 minutes. Place in large bowl and toss with remaining dressing and gorgonzola cheese. Serve immediately.

Cooking tip: Close the lid on your grill when you are finished - it will make the clean up easier.

Also, place any peppers you have on the grill and allow them to stay there as the grill cools for 1 ½ to 2 hours. They will be perfectly roasted and ready for the next meal.

Grilled Peaches with Honey Chevre

serves 8 Ingredients: 4 fresh peaches halved and pitted, 6 ounces chevre, 2 tablespoons milk, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 teaspoon vanilla (you may also use brandy), 1 cup toasted almonds Directions: Combine chevre, milk and honey in a bowl - do not over stir. Grill peaches cut side down about 6 to 8 minutes or until they start to get grill marks and caramelize. Remove from grill, fill each peach half with about I tablespoons of the cheese mixture and top with almonds. Serve warm

Food + art = winning combination

Food and art. An unusual duo? Perhaps, few people would consider those two items a noteworthy combination. Yet, for the Hamilton County Arts Association, food and culture art are adding up to a winning combination.

On Friday, the HCAA will open its annual “Bon Appétit” Art Show and Noblesville Restaurant Art Demonstration. As artist Patty Mac Innis explained, this year’s show is a major step forward.

“This is the first year that the restaurants will be involved,” she said. “All the restaurant owners have been great. They’ve put up miniaturized posters advertising the show, and they have really helped to promote it.”

This year’s “Bon Appétit” opening is part of Noblesville Main Street’s lead off First Friday for the 2013 season. “Bon Appétit” showcases art that have food or food related themes. This year, 18 artists will participate in the show. Each artist will have painting demonstrations in or near 12 of Noblesville’s restaurants.

An open house will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, with a free art shuttle bus providing transportation to two places on the square and the Judge Stone House parking lot. The shuttle will then return to the HCAA Birdie Gallery, 195 S. Fifth St. Artists will paint from 5 to 7:45 p.m.

Patrons will be able to bid on the paintings in a silent auction at the Birdie Gallery. Bids will be

“There are three goals of the show,” Mac Innis said. “We want to promote the restaurants, educate people on the arts, and have a fundraiser for the HCAA.” Indeed, in a show of deep commitment to the arts and the artistic community, each artist will donate 50 percent of the sale of the painting back to the HCAA. “We are looking forward to a large, excellent show,” Mac Innis said.

All the snow has melted and the sun is trying to show it’s lovely rays. But, all you can think is; “Why didn’t I start working out in January?” Don’t let the fear of the coming warm fitness seasons have you retreating into a moo moo just yet. Don’t give up before you even start, there is still time! I know how to help you see results soon.

I am referring to interval training. Interval training is an excellent way to burn more calories, build endurance quickly and add interest to your workouts. Interval training involves alternating high-intensity exercise with recovery periods.

There are a variety of ways to set up interval workouts. One option is timed periods of work followed by timed periods of rest. An example would be one minute of high-intensity work (such as a sprint), followed by two minutes of low-intensity exercise (walking) and alternating that several times for 15 to 30 minutes.

Another option is instead of using time for measurement, use objects. You might power walk or run to the stop sign and recover walk or jog to the mailbox.

Your recovery time should only be a few minutes. You should be able to breathe easily, however; if it takes you 10 minutes to speak, dial back the intensity.

You are in charge of the intervals and how hard you push. This method of training is more effective at inducing fat loss than simply training at a moderate intensity level for the same duration. This is due to the metabolism boosting effects of high-intensity intervals. The idea is to work harder than usual in your “work” sets and to fully recover during the low intensity intervals.

Interval training is a great way to increase results and burn more calories. So, don’t throw in the beach towel just yet. Give interval training a try and not only be ready for summer but look forward to it!

I’m a terrible flyer and it seems to get worse every year, every flight. I clinch the seat in front of me and brace myself with the Advice seatbelt as tight as I can pull it. When the plane touches the ground, I feel a sweet release and my entire body uncoils. Every flight is the same. As soon as the wheels leave the ground, any calmness turns to clamminess.

I have a strategy for flying, really for all emotions, that often works. The underlying concept is you are emotional when you aren’t being rational, so you have to be more rational. Emotions don’t involve thinking; they are feelings. When you think, you can generally dismantle feelings.

When I get mad, I ask myself tough questions that make me think. When I’m sad, I pose hard questions to find the source. As I move from only feeling to thinking, I find greater calmness in my rational thoughts.

That’s my strategy for flying: get thinking and curb the emotions. I disrupt a three-seat radius

I met a fellow on a recent flight. He runs a website for a news group. We started talking about how some people comment on news articles with crushing force, being mean and taking shots. It’s not everyone of course, but there are a lot of people that do. Is it the anonymity that drives it or is there really a bunch of mean people out there that mask it when you meet them in person?

We settled on this; people are nicer to one another in person. There’s increased accountability and, after all, it’s harder to dislike people when you are face to face with them. It’s an easy thing to forget in business too, things go better when you meet with people face to face. I guess it’s all full circle as that’s what put me on the plane to begin with.

Woodhouse spa is growing news@currentinfishers.com

The Carmel based Woodhouse Day Spa is growing from one location to three.

“It is so gratifying when a customer comes in looking so stressed, but when Now Open they leave, you have made a difference in their life,” said Terri Smith, owner of Woodhouse Day Spa. Woodhouse opened in 2006 in Carmel’s Merchant’s Square with a “dream of putting a modern twist and an upscale flavor to the spa industry in Indiana,” Smith states on the spa website.

Now, the spa is opening in Zionsville and Fishers.

“We are bursting at the seams and needed to expand, and I wanted to reach two other communities,” Smith said.

When it comes to the business of beauty, Smith is well versed. She left Indianapolis in 1984 for New York City where she worked for the Estee Lauder Corp. In 2000, Smith moved back to Indiana.

“I really wanted to come back and work in the beauty industry but not travel like I did,” she said.

“When I was with Estee Lauder, I was lucky that

I was able to go to very nice hotels in my job with nice spas. I didn’t think the spas here were at the level of wellness and service I was used to, so I decided to open a spa.”

It’s a decision that has paid off. Zionsville opened last Wednesday, with Fishers set to open May 1 for retail services and June 1 for spa services after remodeling on the site is finished.

Both spas will be located in spaces formerly occupied by Villagio Day Spa –4400 Weston Pointe Dr. in Zionsville and 11501 Geist Pavilion Drive, Suite 118 in Fishers.

Guests who have gift cards for Villagio can use them at the new Woodhouse sites.

“I know I would be furious if I was the one who had purchased that only to be told it wasn’t any good,” Smith said.

For the male clientele, there is a separate men’s quiet room. The new locations will feature 62-inch televisions and comfortable leather chairs.

“I call it the man cave,” Smith said. “Our philosophy is that the spa experience is not a luxury but a necessity.”

Smith will be joined by her husband, Dan, and spa directors at each location.

Upland Brewing to open Friday

By Robert Annis • rob@youarecurrent.com Bloomington-based Upland Brewing Co. will finally open its first Hamilton County taproom this Friday.

The imaginatively named Now Open Carmel Tap Room will have a soft opening Friday with a standard grand opening the following day, said Andrea Lutz, Upland’s Director of Marketing. Doors open at 11 a.m. and will stay that way until 1 a.m. both days.

As part of the grand opening facilities Saturday, Upland is sponsoring a bike parade starting at its Broad Ripple tasting room at noon. Riders will travel eight miles up the Monon Trail/Greenway to the Carmel location at 116th Street and Guilford Road.

The new restaurant will be a smaller version of its Bloomington flagship brewpub, with a focus on locally sourced cuisine and, of course, freshly brewed craft beer. Lutz said a rotating list of 10 Upland beers will be on tap, including Union’s latest, Champagne Velvet, based on a pre-prohibition pilsner brewed more than 100 years ago by the defunct Terre Haute Brewing Co. “The Carmel Tap House will not only give our northside clients a place to enjoy our well-crafted beer, but also the artisanal menu we have become so well known for,” Lutz said. “We intend to keep each location authentic, creating a connection with the community by engaging in local events and charities.”

The new 2,300-square-foot taproom seats 80, but don’t bother calling ahead for reservations – they aren’t accepted. But if you can’t find a seat at the bar, you may be able to find a spot in the outdoor seating area. A menu and entertainment calendar should be online at www.UplandBeer. com in the days before the opening.

be exceptionally cozy, encouraging patrons to linger over pitchers of beer instead of pints.

Carmel resident and beer aficionado Fred Iverson worried Upland’s new taproom was a little too far from the Arts & Design District and other, seemingly more popular areas of Carmel, but was confident it would be a success with bikers and walkers based on its proximity to the Monon.

Upland is the second craft brewer to open its doors in Carmel in recent months. Union Brewing Co. in the nearby Mohawk Plaza opened to local acclaim late last year.

The craft beer world is surprisingly friendly and open; Union co-owner and chief brewer Cameron Fila downplayed any suggestion of a potential rivalry when interviewed earlier this year.

“The more variety people have, the better it is for us,” Fila said. “If they bring more recognition to craft beer in Carmel, it can’t help but be beneficial to us. You want everyone to do well; it’s definitely not a cutthroat business.”

On preventing suffix confusion Commentary by Jordan Fischer

Question: “What are your thoughts about use of the (nonexistent) word ‘preventional’ on page 1 of Current in Carmel last GRAMMAR GUY week? It’s not in Webster’s app, at least not for iPhone.” (Becky Rainsberger, Carmel) Answer: Well Becky, to be honest I hadn’t had any thoughts about “preventional” prior to your question. Obviously, the word we’d expect there is “preventative,” or even “preventive.” I did find an entry for “preventional” in a 1913 edition of a dictionary … but since I found no others, we’ll just call it non-standard at best.

Since I’m prone to tangents, your question got me interested in the reasoning behind why certain words receive certain suffixes as they transform from verbs to nouns or nouns to adjectives/adverbs. After all, while “prevention” gains an “-ative” or “-ive,” “convention” becomes “conventional,” while “attention” follows the former pattern and becomes “attentive.” It’s really more a question of etymology than grammar, but it’s my column, so you’re following me down the rabbit hole.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a consistent rule for selecting a suffix. Instead, I dug into the meanings of each suffix to attempt to extract a reasoning behind the apparent disparity above.

When used with an adjective/adverb, as is the case above, the suffix “-al” signifies relation. For example, a tuba is a “music-al” instrument. The

suffix “-ative” or “-ive” signifies that an object has the nature or quality of whatever the root word is. For example, glue is an “adhes-ive” – by its very nature it exhibits the quality of adhesion (i.e., it binds surfaces together and resists separation).

While these two suffixes seem similar at first, we can observe why they are different. A tuba isn’t “musica-tive” for two reasons: First, “musicative” isn’t a word. Second, a tuba is not, by its nature, composed of music. It is composed of brass. You could say that an opera is “musicative” (if it were a word, that is) because an opera is, by its nature, music. An opera cannot be not musical; its nature would be fundamentally different.

The same logic applies to “preventative.” Brushing your teeth is a preventative step to avoid cavities; the action is, by its nature, a hindrance or impediment to tooth decay (i.e., “prevention”).

The list of English suffixes is enormous, and I don’t have the time or space to examine them all (although I did find out that “numisma” means “coin,” as in “numismatics:” the study or collection of currency). I encourage you to do a little studying on your own time, though (right after you clean out the garage and finally get around to sorting your record collection).

Learn how to understand and handle pet emergencies

In honor of National Pet First Aid Awareness Month, here are a few tips for assisting your pet should an injury occur along with how to recognize an emergency situation versus what is normal for your pet.

There are several steps you can take to assist and make your pet more comfortable and safe en route to the emergency facility. In some cases, you may actually be able to save your pet’s life by acting quickly and administering first aid correctly.

When approaching a sick or injured animal (even your own), always move slowly and cautiously. Animals in these situations can lash out when in pain or frightened. A muzzle may be necessary to avoid biting, but muzzling an animal who is vomiting, coughing or having difficulty breathing can be very dangerous. In a situation where an animal is exhibiting these signs, you must weigh the risk of human injury against the risk to that of the animal.

While any injury to your pet is frightening, there are certain situations that are absolute emergencies and must be treated immediately. They include: trauma (car accident, gunshot wound, fall from significant height), seizures (especially first incidence or

lasting more than two minutes and recurring repeatedly), cuts and gashes causing internal organs to be exposed or fall out, excessive bleeding (spurting blood, prolonged bleeding), snake bites, hyperthermia/hypothermia, poisoning, shock, open wounds with visible bone/severe tissue damage, burns and unconsciousness.

In order to recognize abnormal behavior, it is important to learn what is normal for your pet. Familiarize yourself with your pet’s habits – observe how your pet breathes, eats, drinks, walks, urinates and defecates. Becoming familiar with your pet’s everyday habits will make it easier to notice changes that could signal an underlying problem.

The best possible course of action you can take during situations such as these is to remain calm under pressure, and do not panic. Your pet will be more likely to relax if you can. Also, becoming certified in pet first aid and CPR is a great idea and can be a lifesaver in emergency situations. Classes are offered through the Red Cross, and information can be found on their website, www.redcross.org.

Kitchen remodel creates an open four-seasons space

ORIGINAL KITCHEN: Originally built in 1982, this home is located on the first lot sold on Geist Reservoir. The current owners are the original homeowners, and the husband is a retired local custom homebuilder. blueprint for WHY REMODEL? The original kitchen was improvement U-shaped and fit into a narrow space with a breakfast area. French doors led to a three-season porch overlooking the water. The homeowners felt it was time to remodel the space and to convert the porch into a four-season sunroom. “Floor plans have changed,” said the homeowner. “It used to be that there were more walls. Everything is more open now. Also, the original kitchen was nearing the end of its life, and we were tired of the oak cabinets. We also felt that we would get more use out of a sunroom than a porch.”

NEW SUNROOM SPACE WITH BUMP OUT: The goal of the design was to create an open floor plan for the kitchen area. The plans called for removing the porch and building a sunroom addition fully open to the remodeled kitchen. Visual access to the water was a priority as well. The sunroom was cantilevered off the original foundation walls, as its footprint was larger than the original porch.

All new framing was required, and large windows were installed. A wood beam spanned the new opening from the kitchen to the sunroom.

After FINAL RESULT: As a former custom homebuilder, the homeowner had an eye for the details. “We wanted cherry cabinets and a more traditional style. We really like the granite we chose, as it blends with the cabinets yet it is light. With all of the windows being on one side of the room, dark countertops would have been too dark. The tile design over the range works well too. Our favorite part of the remodel is the sunroom. We use it all the time, and we are enjoying our view more.”
