Businesses begin flood recovery efforts

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Besides residents whose homes were impacted by record-breaking flooding in Noblesville, many businesses and organizations also took a hit and are trying to restore normal operations.

Among the organizations impacted was Teter Retreat and Organic Farm, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to food and providing ecological education in the community. The farm at 10980 E. 221st St. has 3 1/2 miles of public trails along the White River.

Katy Rogers, director and farm manager, said as of Aug. 18, the trails were still under water.

“We are at the bend in the river, so whatever is brought down from upriver comes crashing into our shoreline and is deposited,” Rogers said. “When the waters recede, we will have cleanup efforts.”

On the production side, the farm lost 600 feet of recently seeded crops. Rogers said a recent farming practice change saved most of them.

“We have implemented no-till and cover cropping over the last few years,” Rogers said. “In 2020, 4 inches of rain put our production space out of production. With the recent change, all of the water in the production space was being absorbed almost as fast as it came in, which is incredible. So, we’re really pleased with decisions we started making years ago.”

Rogers said the organization is partnering with organizations like Serve Village and the Red Cross to provide supplies, food and resources to people in need.

“There’s months of work ahead,” Rogers said. “We cannot take our eye off the ball until everybody who is impacted by this has what they need and can get back to some semblance of their life.

These things are especially hard for under-resourced people who already had a stressful life.”

different ways, including Cafe Noricha on the bottom level of Federal Hill Apartments.

“We were not flooded inside, but we had to close the store and there was no electricity,” said Kimmie Chang, who owns the restaurant. “We had to throw away food and nobody could get to us because the parking lot was all flooded.

It was a disaster.”

Chang said although she has not heard from the city or apartment management, she is exploring if insurance can help cover the loss.

Schwartz’s Bait and Tackle, a family-owned shop at the corner of Cicero Road and Logan Street on the bank of the White River, also was impacted. Mi-

chael Ball, who co-owns the shop with his wife Heather, said this is the first time the business has ever flooded.

The business lost projected U-Haul business because of floods, along with live bait, refrigerated snacks, parking lot equipment, miscellaneous outdoor equipment and a tool shed. Ball said they are now focused on recovery.

“We are drying the place out, cleaning up mud and rinsing off anything that can be saved,” Ball said. “We didn’t have a huge amount of inventory loss.

We did have time to at least put most of that up high on the walls and we saved a lot of it that way.”

Ball said he is amazed how the community has supported the business.

His sister created a GoFundMe to help replace inventory and fix water damage, and the business reopened Aug. 19.

“The community has really supported us,” Ball said. “That GoFundMe was definitely appreciated, but in the first three days, there were at least 300 people that walked onto our property, shook our hands and said, ‘We’re praying for you.’ The energy from the community was just amazing. It took what would have been two very hard days and made them actually enjoyable.”

Volunteers offer weekly meals, support

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com A group of volunteers are looking to help those facing food insecurity through a weekly sharing of free food at Seminary Park in Noblesville.

The mutual aid organization, Food Not Bombs Ham. Co., is one of several Food Not Bombs groups across the nation. It is an all-volunteer movement that shares free meals with the public to protest war, poverty and environmental destruction.

The Hamilton County group launched last summer. The meal share often has vegan and vegetarian options, as well as a table with free toiletries and groceries. The group is at the park every Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Volunteer Matt Armstrong said residents were inspired after volunteering with a Food Not Bombs group in Indianapolis.

“A few of us were involved with the one downtown, but we lived in Hamilton County, and realized this work is most effective when you’re doing it in your own communities,” Armstrong said. “We started talking about doing something up here, had a couple meetings and ended up deciding on Seminary Park. We have been there every

Saturday since.”

Armstrong said the network protests war by feeding people in the park.

“It seems like we always have enough money to spend on bombs, and yet we’re told there’s not enough money to support food programs and things that help people in our communities,” Armstrong said. “People kind of fall in that ‘You make too much to get benefits,’ but not enough to feed your family category. As we’re seeing that more, we want our neighbors taken care of. We don’t want anyone to be hungry or hurting or unsafe. I think as attention gets drawn to it, it brings us all together, and we figure out ways to meet those needs.”

Armstrong said about 30 volunteers participate weekly, and approximately 20 people come for free meals and essentials each week. The group also helps handle mutual aid requests.

“We’re able to help people if they need money to pay rent or some bills,” Armstrong said. “We have a system where we are able to help address that type of request. We’re not not super heavily resourced, but we just try to be aware of what’s going on and how we can help out.”

Excel Center to relocate news@currentnoblesville.com Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana is relocating The Excel Center in Noblesville to 1930 Conner St. The Excel Center is a free public high school for adults who want to earn a diploma and begin a career. Operated

by Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana, The Excel Center provides an environment with life coaches and opportunities to earn college credits and industry certifications.

Previously on the Ivy Tech Community College Hamilton County campus, the new location will include a child care center and a dedicated student commons area for collaboration and community building.

The space also will be able to further support adult learners who need The

Excel Center to be successful, according to school officials.

“We are excited to open this new location to our students, families, staff and community members in Noblesville,” stated Miriam Henry, regional director of The Excel Center. “Goodwill remains committed to serving thousands of Hoosiers through our mission, education and employment services, while providing support to Hamilton County and (the) Noblesville community.”

Students attending The Excel Center in Noblesville will continue to earn a Core 40 high school diploma in addition to earning college credits and completing industry certifications at no cost.

Library campaign returns news@currentnoblesville.com Library cardholders can save at more than 40 local businesses in September as Hamilton East Public Library brings back its “Show Your Library Card and Save” campaign in celebration of Library Card Sign-Up Month.

From Sept. 1 through Sept. 30, HEPL cardholders can show their library card at participating businesses to receive special offers, discounts, free items with purchase and other promotions.

The goal of the campaign, which is in its third year, is to give residents a reason to keep an active library card and discover and support local businesses.

“We love that this campaign creates a benefit for everyone involved,” HEPL Director of Marketing and Communications Kelsey Sweet stated. “Our cardholders get access to great deals, our local businesses get the opportunity to welcome new customers and together we’re encouraging people to get out and explore all that our community has to offer.”

Indoor archery coming soon news@currentnoblesville.com Hamilton County Parks and Recreation celebrated a milestone in the development of its new indoor archery facility at Strawtown Koteewi Park in Noblesville with a beam-signing ceremony Aug. 12.

The facility will be a year-round destination for archers of all ages and skill levels while expanding Hamilton County’s ability to host regional, national and international competitions.

“This project started as an idea 12 years ago, when we recognized that Indiana needed quality archery facilities that could provide a place for people to learn, practice and compete,” stated Tony Girt, a leader in Indiana archery and Hamilton County Parks and Recreation’s private-sector partner for the facility. “This new facility is going to give our competitive archers a place to practice year-round and continue developing their skills. Indiana has always produced great archers, and this is going to advance that even more.”

The project is supported in part through a grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and a network of public and private partnerships.

Construction of the facility is underway, with completion anticipated by the end of the year.

USA Archery Olympic trials coming to Ham. Co. news@youarecurrent.com An ancient sport is coming to Hamilton County in 2027, when Droplight Grand Park Sports Campus hosts the 143rd USA Archery Target Nationals and 2027 U.S. Open.

The events also will feature Stage 1 2028 Olympic Team Trials Qualifications, which include compound archery for the first time, according to a news release. Since archery returned to the Olympic Games in 1972, only recurve has been included. For the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, compound has been added as a mixed-team event.

Matt Stutzman, known as “The Armless Archer” and a gold medalist at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, plans to compete in the event and hopes to earn a place on the compound team — with the ultimate goal of becoming the first Paralympic gold medalist to win an Olympic gold medal in archery.

Karen Radcliff, president & CEO of Hamilton County Tourism, stated that hosting the opening stages of the 2028 Olympic Team Trials Qualification events is a defining moment for Hamilton County.

“We’re proud to partner with USA Archery, Droplight Grand Park Sports Campus and the City of Westfield to welcome the best archers from across the nation as they compete in the U.S. Team Trials, National Target Championships, USAT Series Final and U.S. Open,” she stated. “Hamilton County

is built for championship competition and ready to showcase its state-of-theart facilities, hospitality and passion for sport on this national stage.”

Westfield Mayor Scott Willis stated that the city has established a national reputation as a premier destination for sports, and hosting USA Archery marks an exciting new chapter for the community.

“For the first time, athletes will compete in Westfield for the opportunity to represent Team USA at the LA28 Olympic Games,” he stated. “We are proud to welcome these world-class competitors, their families and archery fans from across the country next August.”

Greg Stremlaw, co-chief executive officer of Grand Park Sports and Entertainment, stated that every sports venue aspires to host events that inspire athletes and create unforgettable memories.

“Welcoming the nation’s best archers as they pursue the dream of representing the United States on the Olympic stage reflects exactly what Grand Park was built to do,” he stated. “We are honored by USA Archery’s confidence in our team and look forward to delivering an exceptional championship experience for every athlete, coach, family and fan who visits Westfield.”

USA Archery’s Interim CEO Mary Emmons noted that the Target Nationals and U.S. Open are among the biggest events on the organization’s calendar.

Primrose students help fight food insecurity

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Primrose School of Noblesville, a private preschool, is helping families facing food insecurity.

The school community recently raised $5,200 for Fueled for School, a local nonprofit that provides meals for Hamilton County students experiencing food insecurity. Several staff members from the school recently helped pack and sort meals.

Since 2017, Fueled For School has donated more than 1 million meals across Hamilton County. Kristina Trusty, founder and executive director of Fueled for School, said food insecurity affects more children in the community than many realize.

“Meeting that need takes caring, community partners, and Primrose School of Noblesville has been a dedicated supporter of our mission for years through its generosity and hands-on involvement,” Trusty said.

“By teaching children the importance of serving their community at such a young age, they’re helping instill compassion, empathy and the understanding that everyone has a role to play in caring for their neighbors.”

The school’s donation will help provide weekend meal packs and school

break food boxes for local students.

“These are preschoolers who will eventually go to kindergarten and, hopefully, make their way through Noblesville schools or in surrounding areas, and I think it’s important to note we are both teams of educators supporting each other,” Trusty said. “We work together closely during the day to provide amazing learning experiences for children in the classroom, so it’s a very natural evolution for us to take that relationship outside of the classroom and into the food pantry, where we work together to do really amazing things.”

As part of the Primrose Balanced Learning curriculum, Primrose students engage with their community through year-round give-back initiatives.

“We know there’s a need within our own community, and that’s part of why my husband and I built Primrose,” said Jackie Bell, co-owner of Primrose School of Noblesville. “We raised our children in Noblesville, so it was very important to us that anything we did connected with a charitable organization. We found Fueled for School, and knowing that educators created it and what a great organization it is, I’m pretty sold on sticking with them and helping those children.”

OBITUARY Judy Marie (Faysal) Rogers, 81, went home to meet the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer on August 12, 2026. She was born May 21, 1945, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Charles and Ruby (Cook) Faysal.

She graduated from Warren Central High School in Indianapolis in 1963.

Judy worked at Firestone Industrial Products as an Administrative Assistant for 26 years. At Firestone, Judy also befriended Karen Pryor. Karen was a dear friend to Judy until the end.

Judy married Donald L. Burrow on March 27, 1970. They enjoyed five wonderful years of marriage before Don died in a small airplane crash. She was blessed enough to find love again, and married David Rogers on November 24, 1976. They enjoyed a beautiful life.

Judy loved Jesus and served Him alongside David as he pastored for over 30 years. Her interests included oil painting, reading, and quilting.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, stepdaughter Mary (Rogers) Anno, and an infant great grandson.

She is survived by her husband, David Rogers, her son, Aaron (Danielle) Burrow, stepson, John (Adrienne) Rogers all of Noblesville, Indiana; grandchildren, Amanda Goins, Travis Rogers, Jimmy Goins, Jonathan Rogers, Paul Rogers, all of Noblesville, Eric Anno of Indianapolis, and several greatgrandchildren; stepsons William Burrow of Honea Path, South Carolina and Donald Burrow of New Castle, Indiana; sisters, Beverly (Andy) Lawson of Yukon, Oklahoma and Renay (Kenny) Sneed of Anderson, Indiana.

Services will be at Randall & Roberts Funeral Home at 1150 Logan Street, Noblesville. Visitation will be August 25, 2026, from 11:00 am until the funeral service at 1:00 pm with Pastors Brian Morton and Larry Hufhand officiating. Burial will follow at Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.

School board approves referendum resolution

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com The Noblesville Schools Board of Trustees approved a resolution at its Aug. 18 meeting committing to a 38.5cent rate for 2027 and a slow progression of no more than 4-cent annual increases during the referendum period should the proposal be approved by voters in November.

During initial referendum planning, the school board approved a ballot question with a maximum rate of up to 57 cents. Noblesville Schools Superintendent Dan Hile said although setting the high level was necessary for ballot legal requirements, the board’s intent has always been to avoid needing the maximum rate.

According to Hile, the intent is for the rate not to rise by more than 4 cents than the year prior.

“The idea being that, hopefully, it would actually be lower each year, but a commitment that it would never go

up more than 4 cents a year until we get to 2031, because that’s the year when it should reach its highest level, because that’s when the deductions are fully implemented,” Hile said.

By adopting the resolution, the board and administration establish their intent in writing for the public to view.

“Because we already know our assessed values for next year, we are already prepared to affirm next year’s rate at only a 1.5-cent increase, because we already know that will meet the goals our community has asked us to achieve for Noblesville Schools while keeping the taxes as low as possible,” Hile said.

Hile said because the school board conducts its annual budget process in October, the final budget, which will include the rate for 2027, will be available to view before the community votes on the proposal.

Hile said a copy of the resolution will be available on the school district’s referendum website and BoardDocs page.

The Humane Society for Hamilton County has scheduled a “Clear the Shelters” event to encourage adoptions and reduce the number of animals waiting for a new home.

“We have run out of space and our animals are running out of hope as they wait months — or even years — to find their forever homes,” a news release stated. “Every kennel, office and popup crate has been full since late June, with over 600 animals currently in the building.”

With recent historic flooding affecting neighboring animal shelters, HSHC also has taken in 20 cats from Muncie Animal Care & Services, adding to its capacity concerns.

HSHC is hosting a one-day, $10 adoption event from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 29 at the shelter, 10501 Hague Rd. in Fishers.

Spartz addresses flood recovery, workforce shortage

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Addressing a crowd of local business leaders Aug. 19 at the Promenade Trails Community Center in Noblesville, U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz answered questions about federal disaster relief following recent floods across Hamilton County and the nation’s workforce shortage.

The presentation was part of The Exchange, an initiative by the Noblesville and Westfield Chambers of Commerce designed to bridge the gap between regional employers and public policymakers.

Spartz, a Republican seeking reelection in Indiana’s 5th District, said flooding hit particularly hard in areas with high poverty rates. She has been working with Indiana Gov. Mike Braun to navigate recovery on a federal level.

Following the immediate crisis, she said state and federal agencies began coordinating broader disaster relief.

“We need help from the (Federal Emergency Management Agency) to help with federal funds for underinsured communities, and that needs to be a major disaster declaration,” said Spartz, a Noblesville resident.

Spartz said after allowing FEMA to gather data, plans were made to compile a bulk assessment and apply for FEMA funding by Aug. 20. She also encouraged

people who have been impacted to explore immediate relief options, including State Disaster Relief Fund grants.

“As of right now, people should, if they have insurance, go to (their) insurance and other local resources,” Spartz said. “If people need money, they can apply for (the State Disaster Relief Fund), and,hopefully, we can get this major disaster declaration moving.”

Referring to the Hazel Dell Parkway bridge that collapsed in Carmel, Spartz said securing a federal major disaster declaration is the best way to receive federal funding to repair community infrastructure and assist

insured and uninsured residents.

Spartz also addressed questions regarding the regional workforce shortage and talent pipeline. When asked what policies or initiatives she sees as most promising for supporting employers in the region, Spartz said technologies like AI and cryptocurrency can provide relief for small businesses.

“As an individual entrepreneur, you probably would be able to run your own business with less people, less employees and less overhead (and) it would help you,” Spartz said.

She said new technology could also present challenges because of costs and growing risks, such as national security and public trust. At the federal level, she said she advocates for updating the federal tax code and policy framework with regard to technology.

“We need to start thinking (about) how we can do better implementation — really looking at these new skills and (how) that is probably going to be even different from what we think right now,” Spartz said.

“From a legal framework, now we have to (decide) how to deal (with) it. Congress really needs to have honest conversations on this issue to see how we make sure we don’t have oligopolies with huge (amounts) of market power, control and data.”

The community will have the opportunity to engage with Hamilton County sheriff candidates at the next The Exchange meeting from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Oct. 6 at the Bridgewater Club in Westfield.

stuff over your head and there also was a really bad current. If I didn’t have that canoe, the current would have swept me off my feet.”

Davis and his roommate regained access to their home Aug. 16. With the interior covered in dirt and debris, he said they are working with their insurance companies to review options.

“It was definitely rough because it happened so fast that it was hard to get anything out,” Davis said. “One of my neighbors just bought the house right next to us, and their house is probably going to have to be demolished. My other neighbor’s house was worse than ours.”

As floodwaters receded and river levels decreased, the city began relief efforts.

Serve Village, Hamilton County Emergency Management, the American Red Cross of Indiana, Hamilton County Emergency Management Services, Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank, Good Samaritan Network and community partners opened an emergency evacuation reception center at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds.

More than 1,400 volunteers offered help.

“We have had volunteers that have shown up every day to cover eight-hour shifts,” Serve Village Executive Director Patrick Propst said. “I don’t have a number for what that looks like because we have some

The White River crested at 24.6 feet Aug. 15, breaking the 1913 crest record of 23.8. Several areas of Nobesville were impacted, with about 170 residents and their pets voluntarily evacuated from their homes.

Several residents who live near the White River were impacted. Tad Davis, who rents a house approximately 250 feet from the river, was in Brown County Aug. 15 when he got a call that water was filling his backyard and getting closer to his home.

“It took me about an hour and a half to drive up there, and within that time, the water was already 2 inches deep inside my house,” Davis said. “I stayed in the house for about 45 minutes, and within that time, it went from being below my knees to almost halfway up my knees. Our main road also went from me being able to walk on it to water being above my belly button. It went fast.”

Davis said he was not issued a notice to evacuate, and by the time the fire department checked on the neighborhood, he was using a canoe to get to and from his house.

“It was so deep,” Davis said. “You couldn’t carry

We encourage anyone who can give, volunteer or simply check on a neighbor to get involved. Every act of support matters, and together we can help our community recover and rebuild.”

Phase 2 of flood relief will involve deploying volunteers to help clean up. “(Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency) is the local county contact who is heading the disaster relief,” Propst said. “They are working with agencies and partners to help assess properties and work with residents. Then there are agencies that are helping to provide support, and Serve Village is supporting all of them with volunteer efforts as they request them. We cannot, for safety and liability reasons, send volunteers out until the properties are assessed by EMA.”

Sports teams partner to provide flood relief news@yoaurecurrent.com The Noblesville Boom, Indiana Fever, Indiana Pacers and Indianapolis Colts have donated a combined $250,000 to the American Red Cross to support central Indiana families impacted by historic flooding and severe weather.

The donation — including $125,000 from the Fever, Pacers and Boom and $125,000 from the Colts — will support the American Red Cross’ ongoing response and recovery efforts in central Indiana to provide assistance to those affected by flooding.

“Sports have a unique ability to bring people together, and our connection to this community extends well beyond the court or the field,” Pacers Foundation Chair Rachel Simon stated. “That’s why we’re proud to join the Colts and the Irsay family in supporting the American Red Cross to help provide relief to the individuals and families who have been impacted by these dev-

astating floods. Our thoughts are with everyone across central Indiana whose homes, businesses and lives have been disrupted by this severe weather.”

The White River reached historic levels in portions of central Indiana Aug. 15, prompting evacuations and emergency response efforts in communities including Indianapolis, Noblesville and other areas along the river.

The American Red Cross is providing emergency assistance to those impacted by the flooding, including shelter, food and relief supplies, among other resources.

State to expedite Hazel Dell bridge repair

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Following record-breaking flooding throughout Hamilton County, a collapsed bridge on Hazel Dell Parkway over Blue Woods Creek has been deemed a total loss.

On Aug. 17, Hamilton County Commissioner Christine Altman said she expected it would take at least two years to replace the bridge, but two days later she said it may happen faster.

“The governor has signed an executive order that is speeding up the permitting process not only for us but for the residents that will need to have any type of permits in the flood-affected areas, which is excellent news,” Altman said. “We think we’ve devised a plan to, concurrently with design, remove the debris, which is significant in that water course, and have that area ready to bid and let contracts in for reconstruc-

tion of that bridge.”

By state law, the county is responsible for maintaining bridges. Altman said officials explored installing a temporary bridge but determined that solution was cost prohibitive and would slow down full bridge replacement.

Altman urged everyone to stay off of the White River until further notice.

County commissioners issued a weeklong travel ban for everyone except first responders through Aug. 25.

“Conditions still are dangerous south of 116th Street,” she said. “You put your life in peril, and more importantly, could put in peril our first responders who might have to go out and save you.

So please heed the order.”

Inclusive studio welcomes dancers of all abilities

By Arianna Hunt arianna@youarecurrent.com Long before Dance Abilities had a name, founder Claire Graham had an idea — to create a space where people like her sister could dance.

Graham founded Dance Abilities with the Academy of Dance Arts in Fishers four years ago to serve kids and adults with special needs, inspired by her sister and best friend, Caroline Liechty, who has Down syndrome.

The adaptive program uses dance to build gross motor skills, endurance and strength, while providing a social outlet, community and enabling expression beyond words through movement.

“ADA’s mission is instilling the joy of dance and I took that one step further with instilling the joy of dance for all abilities, so that everyone has a place to come and learn that meets them where they are,” Graham said.

When she’s not teaching at Dance Abilities, Graham works as a recreational therapist, primarily for people with autism and Down syndrome, and dances professionally at Pulse Dance Theater in Indianapolis. Her background in therapy and dance gave her the confidence to start the program.

“I truly am living my dream jobs,” Graham said.

“My favorite time of the week is getting to dance with the Dance Abilities students, and I think my favorite

part is the relationships that I get to build with them.”

Graham wants to ensure the studio provides more than just movement.

“I get a lot of feedback about parents saying that they’re just grateful to have a place for their kid to dance and where they’re accepted,” Graham said.

“And I like to make sure that they’re still growing and that it’s not just a place to come in.”

Sarah Hilbert of Fishers said her 12-year-old daughter Charlotte has experienced that growth at Dance Abilities.

“This allows her that opportunity to be in a place that is accepting and welcoming for her, and can present things on her skill level that she can achieve,” Hilbert said. “It gives her something to look forward to each week. It gives her physical activity. It gives her more friends. So, it really just gives you that sense of belonging.”

Besides social benefits, Hilbert has seen physical ones.

“It’s kind of like physical therapy for her that she doesn’t know she’s doing,” Hilbert said. “I noticed about a year into it, she could jump, and I was like, she’s developed all of these skills and muscles and she didn’t even know she was doing it because she was doing something she absolutely loved doing.”

Not only do dancers like Charlotte gain connection with peers, but parents also gain community through shared experiences.

“Just like at any sport, the parents are having a chance to bond,” Hilbert said. “But we have kids with special needs, and that is an extra level of connection to be able to make and to support each other.”

Jasmine Salinas establishes racing family in Indiana Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com California native Jasmine Salinas will compete in the NHRA U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park Sept. 2-7.

For Salinas, it is an adopted home race.

“I was thinking I’ll come out to Indiana for a little bit and try it out, but it’s five years later and we’re buying our second home here,” Salinas, a Brownsburg resident, said.

Brownsburg also is home to Scrappers Racing, the family-owned NHRA team she races for that has become a hub for the relationships that keep her career moving. That connection will be especially meaningful when Salinas competes in the NHRA U.S. Nationals, the biggest race on the NHRA calendar, just down the road from the team’s Brownsburg headquarters.

“Every single year, we have more friends and people in the community coming out that we’ve gotten to meet and work with,” she said. “Getting to race on a home track over on this side of the country is really special.”

Racing has been part of Salinas’ life since childhood. Her father, Mike Salinas, is a nine-time NHRA Top Fuel event winner and owner and co-founder of Scrappers Racing. In 2023, he became the first driver in NHRA history to break the 300 mph mark in the eighthmile, recording a 300.80 mph run at zMAX Dragway in North Carolina. His full pass reached 338 mph.

Her sister, Jianna Evaristo-Salinas, competes in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle, while other members of the extended racing family work on teams throughout the sport.

“It’s such a family sport,” Salinas said. “My sister is out there racing. My dad’s the reason I got started.”

Jasmine Salinas began racing at 14 and eventually worked her way through the Lucas Oil Series before reaching Top Fuel. She won the 2022 Division 3 Top Alcohol Dragster championship and earned her Top Fuel license the following year. In 2024, she made her Top Fuel debut.

Salinas said one of the reasons she has embraced Indiana is the racing community itself. Many people who

work in the sport relocate to the Indianapolis area because teams, manufacturers, vendors and other racing businesses are concentrated here.

The move has allowed Salinas to develop relationships that would have been difficult to build while living in California.

“I couldn’t build those relationships when I was in California,” she said. “So now I’m heavily in the community — like getting to just go down the street and talk to people who are building something for us on our race car that we run.”

That sense of community is particularly important heading into the U.S. Nationals. Scrappers Racing has operated as a part-time team in recent seasons, putting it at a disadvantage against larger teams with bigger budgets and more resources. Still, Salinas said the team has been able to challenge some of the sport’s biggest names.

For the U.S. Nationals, Salinas’ immediate goal is straightforward — qualify well, make it through race day and continue proving what a smaller team can accomplish.

There is another goal, too. After watching Shawn Langdon become the first driver to break the 340 mph barrier earlier this year, Salinas told her crew chief she wanted to chase that milestone herself.

“I need to do that this year. I want to do it,” she said.

As Hamilton County students return to the classroom, Walmart is rolling back prices on numerous backto-school items for families, even as demand for physical supplies shifts toward digital learning tools.

Walmart store manager Ryan Day said although physical supply needs remain high for elementary students, purchasing habits shift as students advance in grades.

“Maybe it’s because some of the stuff is more digital,” Day said. “You still need the basics, especially for the younger grades, but as they progress toward high school, they need fewer supplies.”

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com The Sensory Shoppe, a space where neurodivergent children and adults can explore, learn and thrive through sensory experiences, has opened a store in Noblesville.

The shop opened in Hamilton Town Center at 14165 Cabella Parkway Aug. 15. There also is a store in Carmel.

Carlie Jennings, who manages the Noblesville store, said the company wanted to expand to reach more people. A third location will open in Greenwood in the next few months.

“The ability to be more accessible to our community is vital, and having more locations means we can reach more individuals,” Jennings said.

“Emily Hawthorne, who owns all locations, is very understanding of Hamilton County as a whole, and I think she felt like Noblesville would be a good place to serve a lot of families.”

Actress juggles duties in ‘Ring of Fire’

Besides her acting role, Hund is the assistant director and associate director of music in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s presentation of the musical “Ring of Fire,” which runs Aug. 27 to Oct. 4 at the Indianapolis venue.

“Beef & Boards has assembled a great team,” said Hund, whose character doesn’t have a name. “Jeff Stockberger is the director, Kristy Templet is the music director and Sally Mitchell is the choreographer. All of us have worked together in many different capacities over the years, and (I) can’t wait to see what we create together with this production. It’s going to be one heck of a collaboration.”

In 2024, Hund performed in Actors Theatre of Indiana’s “Ring of Fire,” which follows the story of Johnny Cash.

“No two productions of ‘Ring of Fire’ are the same, as the script and score leave a lot of room for interpretation,” she said. “In the 2024 ATI production, I was the only woman in the cast, so I played all the female roles in the show. In this Beef & Boards production, we have three women — hooray. I will be singing some of the same songs I did in the ATI version, but many of the arrangements will be different.”

Hund has performed in one other “Ring of Fire” production.

“Though I have ‘almost’ done it an additional four times,” Hund said.

“And I have performed in Johnny Cash tribute concerts, too. Audiences always go crazy for ‘Ring of Fire.’

Johnny Cash is such an iconic figure in American music and, wow, he wrote and performed so many great songs.”

This will be Hund’s 33rd show with Beef & Boards.

“I love working at the Beef,” she said. “The regulars who work there often truly are like a family. My first show there was ‘Smoke on the Moun-

tain’ in 2007, and that will always hold a place in my heart. Over the years, I’ve gotten to play many bucket-list roles, including The Witch in ‘Into the Woods,’ Fantine in ‘Les Miserables’ and Lina Lamont in ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ among others.”

Hund said she no longer lives in Indianapolis but spends a lot of time in the city.

“Over the years, I’ve made a lot of friends in Indy, so I always enjoy my time here,” she said.

Along with theater work, she plays fiddle for the Blue Eyed Bettys, a three-person band. She has played the violin since fifth grade.

“We haven’t performed a concert in over a year, sadly, because our schedules haven’t aligned,” she said. “But we do have a Patreon, where we post a new video every month for our subscribers. We hope to get back to tour-

ing and recording again soon.”

When she is in the Indianapolis area, she frequently fills in at Bach to Rock Music School in Carmel and Zionsville as manager, substitute teacher, band director and events site manager.

“I served as director of the Bach to Rock Zionsville location during the (COVID-19) pandemic, when performing jobs were scarce, so I am familiar with all aspects of running the schools,” she said. “This allows me to jump in wherever the need arises. I’m grateful to have maintained a close relationship with such a terrific music school and I love working with the kids.”

Indiana University and Lawrence Central High School graduate Devin McDuffy will make his Beef & Boards debut in the ensemble cast.

‘Dancing with Our Stars’ set to return

By Alex McCarthy alex@youarecurrent.com Most months, Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County adds five or 10 new clients. In recent months, Tricia Hudson, executive director and CEO, said that number has risen to 15 to 20 per month.

The organization, which delivers medically tailored meals to the elderly or those with disabilities, facing food insecurity or unable to prepare food for themselves, is now serving clients in Madison County in addition to Hamilton County, Hudson said. She said the expansion of services and the organization’s increased community outreach are two reasons for the recent increase in demand.

The organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year is “Dancing with Our Stars,” which takes place at 6 p.m. Sept.

“A lot of our clients are at or below poverty levels, so we financially support their meals through a program that we call Sponsor a Meal, SAM for short,” Hudson said. “This event helps fund that cause.”

The 12th annual “Dancing with Our Stars” features several locals dancing with professional dancers. Carmel resident Natalie O’Hara attended last

year’s event as an audience member, and said she was “touched by it” because her parents volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years. She understands the mission of the organization is about more than just food.

“I specifically remember that my dad would talk to people and make sure he had a friendly conversation with them so that they would not feel lonely,” O’Hara said. “I think that’s really important, having that human interaction.”

When a friend nominated her to be one of the featured performers for this year’s event, O’Hara couldn’t say no.

She has been training with her partner, Zhivko Yankov, since May, and said there’s been a bit of a learning curve.

“My background was more with dance team-type dancing, so this ballroom thing was definitely different for me,” said O’Hara, the director of business development for the Skillman Corp.

Tickets are still available but have been going fast, Hudson said. Hudson, who has been in her role since May, said there will be a special announcement at the event as well. Above all, the event will ensure Meals on Wheels can continue to serve residents at a time when demand is increasing.

“We’re proud of this event, we’re proud of the community and the people that we serve,” Hudson said.

Famed saxophonist takes the stage

Amid the chaos of a St. Louis farmers market in the early 1970s, a legendary jazz career began when Todd Williams and fellow elementary school students ended a semester of saxophone lessons with a performance at the market.

Half a century later, Williams still remembers playing a solo during a song called “Hip Lamb” — a groovy version of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” — and how it began a string of people noticing his playing and encouraging him.

“I had reinforcement time and time again,” Williams said.

That encouragement eventually came from some of the biggest names in American jazz, including trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Williams has become a renowned performer, writer and instructor in his own right.

Williams, 59, later found his way to Indianapolis, and he’s bringing that lifetime of jazz experience to the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts’ Local Mix Music Series. The show, featuring Williams, Kenny Phelps on drums and Bethany Robinson on bass as the Todd Williams Trio, is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at The Tarkington in Carmel. Williams was barely old enough to drive when he found himself in an impromptu audition for Marsalis.

He and a friend attended a show and ended up going backstage to meet the band. Someone backstage recognized Williams as a star saxophonist and got Williams to play for Marsalis.

“I was just feeling like, ‘I can’t believe I’m playing in front of these guys,’” Williams said. “And I didn’t really play too well.”

Marsalis saw potential in him, though. He sent him 11 cassette tapes of saxophone solos for Williams to learn.

Williams did just that, and the next time he saw Marsalis, he played one of the solos. Marsalis was impressed with his work ethic, and when he needed someone to fill in for a while, Marsalis called Williams.

Williams toured with Marsalis in the late 1980s and early 1990s and was a featured artist for the Lincoln Center Jazz Band from 1989 to 2016. As a writer,

he has won four ASCAP Plus Awards for Composers.

He has transitioned to teaching as well, which eventually led him to Indiana Wesleyan, where he has been an assistant professor of Music Education since 2012. He said he and his family have loved living in the Midwest and that the music scene in Indianapolis has been impressive. He praised the number of musical groups in town as well as vibrant venues such as the Payne & Mencias Palladium in Carmel and the Jazz Kitchen in Broad Ripple.

“I always kind of boast a little bit on Indianapolis,” Williams said. “Most cities, they struggle to have an orchestra.

Just an orchestra, you know? And we have two orchestras, lots of venues and people who play jazz, people who do all sorts of things.”

Julia Shildmyer, director of Education & Community Engagement at Allied Solutions Center, said the venue is fortunate to have Williams nearby and willing to share his expertise.

“He has enriched our jazz and education offerings in so many ways, and I think we’ve provided some memorable opportunities for his students as well,” Shildmyer stated via email.

Williams said the Sept. 3 show will make even non-jazz aficionados sing along and snap their fingers.

“The idea is to keep it simple, keep it singable, and keep it fun, but at the same time, incorporate improvisations that are really satisfying to the person who’s a more experienced listener,” he said.

Jr. Civic lessons go beyond the stage

By Piper Bailey Piper@youarecurrent.com For more than 80 years, Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre’s Jr. Civic program has taught young performers more than acting, dancing or singing.

Its classes build confidence, discipline, teamwork and skills that students carry with them long after they leave the stage.

Students ages 4 to 14 can sign up for classes in the fall’s eight-week session running from September to November.

Classes give students opportunities to practice performing while learning the fundamentals of theater. Depending on their age and experience level, students may work on acting techniques, movement, musical theater and other skills designed to help them become more comfortable performing in front of others.

“You’re not only learning techniques about theater and musical theater,” Brent Marty, Civic’s director of music and education, said. “You’re learning life skills.”

Civic Education Programs Director Holly Stults said she has seen families return to Civic with their children and grandchildren, seeing firsthand how

lessons learned from theater can follow students into adulthood.

“We’re not just trying to turn out Broadway stars but human beings who can really approach the world in a creative, exciting way and think outside the box,” Stults said.

Stults and Marty said students develop confidence, discipline and teamwork while learning how to handle rejection. Stults said “learning how to deal with no in a positive way” can prepare students for future auditions, job interviews and other challenges.

Classes start at $200, and need-based scholarship opportunities are available for students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch or textbook assistance programs.

We fire off emails, convene blue-ribbon panels, talk at length about the failures of previous plans to move the ball, celebrate the production of a voluminous tome called “Vision 2045” or some such, and then we promptly file it away, not to be considered until the next round of planning comes calling.

Thirty-fourth President of the United States and World War II Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe Dwight D. Eisenhower said in a 1957 speech on national defense during the height of the Cold War, “Plans are worthless, but planning is everything.”

Is it that the value of the process is not the process but that planning requires some reflection, even at significantly distant intervals, on where we are at any given time? As we embark on the simplest of errands, consideration must be taken for the route and conveyance. How will we get the job done? We map out the presumed plan

and set out to achieve the mission. As we go merrily along, streets are closed (or washed away by a centennial storm event), mechanical calamity affects our driving, or any myriads of unforeseen occurrences disrupt our plans. Late 1980s boxing phenomena Mike Tyson remarked, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

Of course, we’d react pugilistically, rerouting or otherwise altering the original route to circumvent the disruption and find our way onward to the objective.

But if all goes well, we scarcely consider the plan. Talking on the phone to pass the time we absentmindedly drive to our destination, only taking note as GPS reminds us to “turn right ahead.”

Then once the errand is completed, we plot our way to the next. Is it strategic or merely intentional?
