Fishers shifts focus to recovery following historic flooding

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness praised the community’s first responders for their efforts during the historic flooding that hit the region, and reported to the city council Aug. 17 that Fishers’ critical infrastructure appears stable despite significant flooding in some neighborhoods.

“For many of you, you heard about the flooding on (Aug. 15), but in reality, our efforts started early (Aug. 13), when our public safety — primarily our fire department — was dispatched to the Pendleton area and did water rescues for the majority of the day,” he told the Fishers City Council. “Later that evening, upon my return, the Fall Creek Township trustee gave me a call (and) said that he thought the water was getting pretty high and fast-paced out in the Luxhaven neighborhood of Fishers.”

Fadness said water coming down the Fall Creek corridor was threatening that neighborhood, and first responders ended up rescuing five people in the area. He noted that Fishers’ public safety and public works crews helped not only Fishers residents, but responded to neighboring communities affected by the flood, including Tipton, Anderson and other Hamilton County cities.

Fadness said only a few neighborhoods in Fishers were affected by the flooding and city officials contacted those residents early on to encourage them to evacuate. Some left right away; others waited and had to be rescued as waters continued to rise.

“Our team did an incredible job of taking care of these people,” he said, adding that some were still sheltering in hotels. “We’re partnering with Fall Creek Township and Delaware Township to take care of those individuals.

and our Department of Public Works and Deputy Mayor (Elliott Hultgren) are kind of taking point on providing resources and information.”

Fadness stressed that City of Fishers team members showed compassion, dedication and professionalism in their response. He stressed that within the City of Fishers, there was no damage to any critical infrastructure and all roads were open.

Councilors thanked Fadness and city staff for keeping information and updates flowing throughout the response.

Fall Creek Township Trustee Doug Allman spoke during public comment at the end of the meeting and thanked Fadness and first responders for acting quickly to help residents of Luxhaven.

He said recovery is going to be a slow process and noted that the county trustees were collecting donations to help residents with clean-up efforts. He said people can call the Hamilton County flood recovery hotline, 317-645-3261, to connect with all the resources available.

According to the City of Fishers, 16 homes were evacuated, which included 27 adults, five children and 20 pets. On Aug. 15, water pressure for some parts of the community dropped. No boil-water notice was sent out, however, and the pressure was expected to resolve itself as floodwaters receded. A water main break Aug. 15 led to the temporary closure of the Fishers Community Center.

During an Aug. 16 news conference, Hamilton County officials spoke about countywide recovery efforts after the White River crested at 24.6 feet Aug. 15, breaking the previous 1913 record of 23.8. Hamilton County Commissioner Christine Altman said officials were assessing the loss of the bridge on Hazel Dell Parkway between 106th Street and 96th Street, part of which collapsed in the flooding.

Noblesville Mayor Chris Jensen said about 170 Noblesville residents and their pets were voluntarily evacuated from their homes, and about 552 residential units were affected.

In Carmel, approximately 230 properties were affected by flooding, and 40 residents were relocated from their homes.

HSE lowers anticipated first-year referendum rate

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Following the recent release of Hamilton County net assessed values — the amount used to determine property taxes — Hamilton Southeastern Schools announced that it will lower the anticipated first-year referendum rate when drafting the district’s 2027 budget.

The district’s budget must be adopted before the November election, which is when voters will decide whether to approve a proposed replacement operating referendum. The proposal — in response to the new state property tax law that reduced how much is collected for schools and local government — calls for a maximum rate of 36 cents per $100 of net assessed value over an eight-year term, but school officials said earlier this year that they intend to start at a lower rate of 22.75 cents, increasing that about 6 percent annually to about 33 cents in 2034.

Chief Finance Officer Tim Brown told the HSE School Board Aug. 12 that net assessed values are higher than expected, so the district will lower the 2027

rate to 22 cents, decreasing the amount homeowners would pay under the replacement referendum.

“That average or that median homeowner would now have roughly a $26 increase in calendar year 2027,” Brown said. “That is not a per-month amount.

That is the entire year of 2027.”

The average home is estimated to have a gross assessed value of $400,000, so the actual amount would vary depending on the value of a home.

The district’s previous estimate at the 22.75-cents rate was $37 per year for the average home. Brown noted that if the new property tax law had not been implemented, property owners would pay more under the current referendum, which has a maximum rate of 19.95 cents.

Brown said the district’s decision to lower the rate shows its commitment to taxpayers.

“We’re always going to do what we need to do to try to support the district, but have the taxpayer in mind with every decision that we make,” he said.

dation for the next year, if the referendum would pass, we will have that absolutely in mind.”

In an announcement from the district, Superintendent Matt Kegley stated that HSE officials understand the responsibility that comes from asking the community for additional support.

“As we have said from the beginning of this process, we will continue to make adjustments to ensure we are recommending only what is needed to support our students and staff, while remaining mindful of the impact on

homeowners,” he stated. “With the release of the actual 2027 (certified assessed net values), we were able to refine our projections and reduce the anticipated impact on homeowners.”

Indiana law requires a school districts to seek approval of the highest possible rate it might need during the life of the referendum, according to the announcement. The HSE Board of School Trustees establishes a tax rate each year based on a recommendation from district administrators as part of the annual budget process.

HSE administrators have been cutting costs in response to revenue shortfalls, and Brown told the board Aug. 12 that the financial effect of staff reductions this spring will be more clear after August and September payrolls are complete.

Council OKs DORAs for downtown, Fishers District

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com The City of Fishers has joined other Hamilton County cities with Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas — DORAs — following an Aug. 17 vote by the Fishers City Council.

The proposal for two DORAs was introduced in July, with the plan calling for one DORA in the Nickel Plate District downtown and a second in the fast-growing Fishers District, close to the Fishers Event Center.

DORAs are defined zones where adults 21 and older can purchase alcoholic beverages from approved vendors and carry them outside to be consumed within the DORA boundaries.

The borders of the Nickel Plate District DORA will be roughly west on South Street from Commercial Drive toward Fishers Center Drive, then north to Municipal Drive — just north of the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. The DORA then will head east on Municipal Drive to Commercial Drive and then south along Commercial Drive back to South Street.

The Fishers District DORA will start just south of 116th Street and east of IKEA Way, at The Yard at Fishers District. The area includes The Villas, Forum Credit Union, The Crossing development and the Fishers Event Center.

The original proposed hours of operation were 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. year-round at the Fishers District DORA. Similar hours were proposed at Nickel Plate District May through October, switching to noon to 11 p.m. during the winter months.

Some councilors expressed concern with those hours when the plan was introduced, and the plan was amended before coming back to the council.

Hours of operation for both DORAs now will be Monday through Thursday, 4 to 10 p.m.; and Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Fourteen restaurants so far have signed up to participate in the two DORAs. Food trucks also can sign up as temporary vendors.

Implementation of the two DORAs will take place after a review of the plan by the state Alcohol and Tobacco Commission.

Indiana began allowing DORAs in 2023. Since then, many Indiana communities have established the outdoor areas where alcohol can be carried and consumed, including Carmel, Noblesville and Westfield. Westfield has two DORAs, one in downtown and a second in the Grand Park District. Nearby in Boone County, Zionsville also has a DORA. For more, visit fishersin.gov/our-city/ fishers-dora-districts.

Senior middle blocker a hit for Shamrocks

“Every time she steps in the gym, we’re impressed with what she’s able to bring to the court with respect to her leadership, her demands of other people and her expectations to Comer win and be competitive at all times,” Shamrocks coach Sean Keeve said. “Outside of her ability and success in the middle, her abilities to make those around her better (are valuable) because of how big a threat she is to score.”

Keeve said she provides a lot of offensive stability.

“She hit well over .500 (percent) last year, which is absolutely insane, where every time she is getting set, she’s scoring,” he said. “She doesn’t make a ton of errors. Anywhere we put her in the offense, she is very lethal for us.”

dence coming into this year,” Comer said. “Obviously, our goal is to win a state championship, but just honestly to play the best we can every day.”

Comer is one of nine seniors and three captains.

“I think every one of our seniors are going to have a little bit more of a leadership role,” she said.

The University of Louisville recruit

said it would be amazing to be named Indiana Miss Volleyball or Indiana Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year.

“But really, I’m just trying to focus on getting myself ready for Louisville and getting to that next level,” she said..

Comer plans to graduate this semester and enroll at Louisville in January.

She said it should help her learn to balance athletics along with the college workload of classes. She made a verbal commitment to the Cardinals in the summer of 2025.

“When I started watching college volleyball, they were having a historic season, finishing 32-1 (in 2021),” said Comer, who has played with the Munciana club team for the past six seasons.

“Something about their court presence and culture really grabbed me. I went to their camp two years in a row and absolutely fell in love with the campus, the culture, the girls there and the coaches.

I do know a few people there already who absolutely love it, so all that kind of pulled me toward it.”

Orr Fellowship alum pays it forward

By Hannah VanLandingham hannah@youarecurrent.com When Bo Dietrick started working in 2011, he didn’t know where his career path would lead.

In 2011, the summer before his senior year at Purdue University, Dietrick started an internship at ExactTarget — which rebranded to Salesforce Marketing Cloud in 2013. That’s where he first heard about Orr Fellowship, a program offered to recent college graduates to guide them through their first full-time job in the Indianapolis area.

Dietrick said he applied for the program and was accepted, but because of a job offer from ExactTarget, he bypassed the program’s typical process for job placement and returned to ExactTarget as an Orr Fellow.

He stayed with ExactTarget for about six years before briefly moving to a position at a creative agency in Indianapolis called Trendy Minds. He left Trendy Minds in 2017 to take on a leadership position with an industrial solutions company in Fishers that his grandfather started in 1969 – Robert Dietrick Co.

Dietrick said he surprised himself with that decision. “(RDC) was really the last thing I ever thought about doing,” he said. “(But) in late 2017, the business was nearing the end of its second generation (and they were) thinking a lot about the future succession planning… And so it, all of a sudden, felt kind of entrepreneurial to me to come into this older business and see how we might be able to innovate it from within and breathe some new life into it for its next generation.”

Dietrick remains involved with Orr Fellowship, serving as its board chair.

In addition, RDC employs five Orr Fel-

lowship alumni and three Orr Fellows.

Dietrick said he uses his experience from the program to guide his leadership, and spends 1-on-1 time giving advice to Orr Fellows in his employ, ensuring they find the same benefits from the program that he did.

“Empathy is such a powerful tool, and because I was in these young people’s shoes, what feels like not all that long ago, I try to just remember what it was like for me,” Dietrick said. “One of the things I loved about the Orr Fellowship was the access to meet people higher up in a company. I felt like at ExactTarget, and through our fellowship, I was getting to meet with people that not many other 22 year olds would … I try (to) give our fellows monthly access to me and have it be a private space (where) they can ask anything …

Anything that I can share, that’s either from my experience or my awareness of what’s going on in the business, I want to give them access to (that) information so that they can grow really fast.”

Inclusive Fishers studio welcomes dancers of all abilities

By Arianna Hunt arianna@youarecurrent.com Long before Dance Abilities had a name, founder Claire Graham had an idea – to create a space where people like her sister could dance.

Graham founded Dance Abilities with the Academy of Dance Arts in Fishers four years ago to serve kids and adults with special needs, inspired by her sister and best friend, Caroline Liechty, who has Down syndrome.

The adaptive program uses dance to build gross motor skills, endurance and strength, while providing a social outlet, community and enabling expression beyond words through movement.

“ADA’s mission is instilling the joy of dance and I took that one step further with instilling the joy of dance for all abilities, so that everyone has a place to come and learn that meets them where they are,” Graham said.

When she’s not teaching at Dance Abilities, Graham works as a recreational therapist, primarily for people with autism and Down syndrome, and dances professionally at Pulse Dance Theater in Indianapolis. Her background in therapy and dance gave her the confidence to start the program.

“I truly am living my dream jobs,” Graham said. “My favorite time of the week is getting to dance with the Dance Abilities students, and I think my favorite part is the relationships that I get to build with them.”

Graham wants to ensure the studio provides more than just movement.

“I get a lot of feedback about parents saying that they’re just grateful to have a place for their kid to dance and where they’re accepted,” Graham said. “And I like to make sure that they’re still growing and that it’s not just a place to come in.”

Sarah Hilbert of Fishers said her 12-year-old daughter Charlotte has experienced that growth at Dance Abilities.

“This allows her that opportunity to be in a place that is accepting and welcoming for her, and can present things

on her skill level that she can achieve,” Hilbert said. “It gives her something to look forward to each week. It gives her physical activity. It gives her more friends. So, it really just gives you that sense of belonging.”

Besides social benefits, Hilbert has seen physical ones.

“It’s kind of like physical therapy for her that she doesn’t know she’s doing,” Hilbert said. “I noticed about a year into it, she could jump, and I was like, she’s developed all of these skills and muscles and she didn’t even know she was doing it because she was doing something she absolutely loved doing.”

Not only do dancers like Charlotte gain connection with peers, but parents also gain community through shared experiences.

“Just like at any sport, the parents are having a chance to bond,” Hilbert said.

“But we have kids with special needs,

and that is an extra level of connection to be able to make and to support each other.”

Every class has helpers in the studio to give additional direction to students.

Recent Heritage Christian School graduate Emily Calvin, 18, and Mount Vernon High School junior Rhiannon Sickafoose, 16, have taken on that role since the start of the program.

“I’d say (my favorite part is) seeing them grow and developing relationships with them, because it’s crazy to see the change from when we started to now,” Calvin said.

For Sickafoose, the dancer’s energy is the reward.

“I can tell how much they love dancing,” Sickafoose said. “It’s so fun to see not only how passionate we are for doing this for them, but how passionate they are for doing it themselves.”

In July, the dancers performed at the

Indy Dance Festival, which was meaningful to Calvin and Sickafoose.

“It’s really important to show the inclusion because all of the dancers that we have, they all can do dance. They can dance without us,” Sickafoose said.

“They can be on stage with all these professionals because they are dancers.

They aren’t just people trying to dance – no, they are dancers.”

As Hamilton County students return to the classroom, Walmart is rolling back prices on numerous backto-school items for families, even as demand for physical supplies shifts toward digital learning tools.

Walmart store manager Ryan Day said although physical supply needs remain high for elementary students, purchasing habits shift as students advance in grades.

“Maybe it’s because some of the stuff is more digital,” Day said. “You still need the basics, especially for the younger grades, but as they progress toward high school, they need fewer supplies.”

Despite the shift toward technology, area school districts emphasize that traditional classroom tools remain essential alongside digital platforms.

Fishers lawyer focuses on passion for senior care

By Hannah VanLandingham hannah@youarecurrent.com Sheryl Hamer has turned her passion for senior care into a law career focused on helping prevent family crises before they happen.

Hamer started her career with an internship in senior living and found her calling there.

“I fell in love with helping older adults and went back to school and changed my course of study into gerontology,” she said.

At the time, Indiana University didn’t offer a gerontology major, so she took the study on as a minor during her undergraduate studies, graduating in 2013 with a master’s degree in public health and a certificate in gerontology and health.

Hamer worked in senior living and geriatric psychology for several years, and during that time worked with many people and families in crisis.

“I wanted to be able to do more to help families,” Hamer said. “Everything really starts with making sure that folks have the proper estate plan in place, and their kids and loved ones have the ability to make the decisions that they need to make … I just felt that I could do the most for people where it all starts: getting the right documents in place through elder law and estate planning.”

Hamer returned to school in 2020, pursuing a law degree at the IU McKinney School of Law. She opened Life By Design, an estate and elder law practice at 10475 Crosspoint Blvd., in February 2025, providing services in estate planning, Medicaid planning, guardianship and asset protection, among others.

Hamer noted that decisions with estate planning can be made in haste if families aren’t prepared.

“Oftentimes, people are making decisions last minute because of a fall, hospitalization or something like that,

and they don’t have time to pre-plan,” she said. “And then families come to me when they’re in crisis, and we can do a lot for folks in crisis. But it’s … adult children that are coming to us and they either don’t know exactly what (their parents) need (or) they don’t know all that mom and dad have, so they’re kind of shuffling to find all of (their parents’) assets.”

Hamer said a common misconception is that estate planning is only necessary for retirees or elderly people.

“All adults need estate planning,” she said. “I think people have the perception that it’s for retired people or people with a lot of money, and then everything else is just kind of going to fall into place.”

Hamer hopes Life by Design will reach families and continue to help create plans to lessen stress during crises. “(We want) to be a resource for families, so that they feel like they’ve met with somebody who knows their plan, and they have peace of mind knowing that if anything happens to them, their kids have somebody that they can reach out to that will help them navigate the legal realm,” she said.

Actress juggles duties in ‘Ring of Fire’

Besides her acting role, Hund is the assistant director and associate director of music in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s presentation of the musical “Ring of Fire,” which runs Aug. 27 to Oct. 4 the Indianapolis venue.

“Beef & Boards has assembled a great team,” said Hund, whose character doesn’t have a name. “Jeff Stockberger is the director, Kristy Templet is the music director and Sally Mitchell is the choreographer. All of us have worked together in many different capacities over the years, and (I) can’t wait to see what we create together with this production. It’s going to be one heck of a collaboration.”

In 2024, Hund performed in Actors Theatre of Indiana’s “Ring of Fire,” which follows the story of Johnny Cash.

“No two productions of ‘Ring of Fire’ are the same, as the script and score leave a lot of room for interpretation,” she said. “In the 2024 ATI production, I was the only woman in the cast, so I played all the female roles in the show. In this Beef & Boards production, we have three women — hooray. I will be singing some of the same songs I did in the ATI version, but many of the arrangements will be different.”

“And I have performed in Johnny Cash tribute concerts, too. Audiences always go crazy for ‘Ring of Fire.’

Johnny Cash is such an iconic figure in American music and, wow, he wrote and performed so many great songs.”

tain’ in 2007, and that will always hold a place in my heart. Over the years, I’ve gotten to play many bucket-list roles, including The Witch in ‘Into the Woods,’ Fantine in ‘Les Miserables’ and Lina Lamont in ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ among others.”

Hund said she no longer lives in Indianapolis but spends a lot of time in the city.

“Over the years, I’ve made a lot of friends in Indy, so I always enjoy my time here,” she said.

Along with theater work, she plays fiddle for the Blue Eyed Bettys, a three-person band. She has played the violin since fifth grade.

“We haven’t performed a concert in over a year, sadly, because our schedules haven’t aligned,” she said. “But we do have a Patreon, where we post a new video every month for our subscribers. We hope to get back to tour-

ing and recording again soon.”

When she is in the Indianapolis area, she frequently fills in at Bach to Rock Music School in Carmel and Zionsville as manager, substitute teacher, band director and events site manager.

“I served as director of the Bach to Rock Zionsville location during the (COVID-19) pandemic, when performing jobs were scarce, so I am familiar with all aspects of running the schools,” she said. “This allows me to jump in wherever the need arises. I’m grateful to have maintained a close relationship with such a terrific music school and I love working with the kids.”

Famed saxophonist takes the stage

Amid the chaos of a St. Louis farmers market in the early 1970s, a legendary jazz career began when Todd Williams and fellow elementary school students ended a semester of saxophone lessons with a performance at the market.

Half a century later, Williams still remembers playing a solo during a song called “Hip Lamb” — a groovy version of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” — and how it began a string of people noticing his playing and encouraging him.

“I had reinforcement time and time again,” Williams said.

That encouragement eventually came from some of the biggest names in American jazz, including trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Williams has become a renowned performer, writer and instructor in his own right.

Williams, 59, later found his way to Indianapolis, and he’s bringing that lifetime of jazz experience to the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts’ Local Mix Music Series. The show, featuring Williams, Kenny Phelps on drums and Bethany Robinson on bass as the Todd Williams Trio, is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at The Tarkington in Carmel. Tickets are $10 and are available at thecenterpresents.org.

Williams was barely old enough to drive when he found himself in an impromptu audition for Marsalis.

He and a friend attended a show and ended up going backstage to meet the band. Someone backstage recognized Williams as a star saxophonist and got Williams to play for Marsalis.

“I was just feeling like, ‘I can’t believe I’m playing in front of these guys,’” Williams said. “And I didn’t really play too well.”

Marsalis saw potential in him, though. He sent him 11 cassette tapes of saxophone solos for Williams to learn.

Williams did just that, and the next time he saw Marsalis, he played one of the solos. Marsalis was impressed with his work ethic, and when he needed someone to fill in for a while, Marsalis called Williams.

Williams toured with Marsalis in the late 1980s and early 1990s and was a featured artist for the Lincoln Center Jazz Band from 1989 to 2016. As a writer,

he has won four ASCAP Plus Awards for Composers.

He has transitioned to teaching as well, which eventually led him to Indiana Wesleyan, where he has been an assistant professor of Music Education since 2012. He said he and his family have loved living in the Midwest and that the music scene in Indianapolis has been impressive. He praised the number of musical groups in town as well as vibrant venues such as the Payne & Mencias Palladium in Carmel and the Jazz Kitchen in Broad Ripple.

“I always kind of boast a little bit on Indianapolis,” Williams said. “Most cities, they struggle to have an orchestra.

Just an orchestra, you know? And we have two orchestras, lots of venues and people who play jazz, people who do all sorts of things.”

Julia Shildmyer, director of Education & Community Engagement at Allied Solutions Center, said the venue is fortunate to have Williams nearby and willing to share his expertise.

“He has enriched our jazz and education offerings in so many ways, and I think we’ve provided some memorable opportunities for his students as well,” Shildmyer stated via email.

Williams said the Sept. 3 show will make even non-jazz aficionados sing along and snap their fingers.

“The idea is to keep it simple, keep it singable, and keep it fun, but at the same time, incorporate improvisations that are really satisfying to the person who’s a more experienced listener,” he said.

Jr. Civic lessons go beyond the stage

By Piper Bailey Piper@youarecurrent.com For more than 80 years, Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre’s Jr. Civic program has taught young performers more than acting, dancing or singing.

Its classes build confidence, discipline, teamwork and skills that students carry with them long after they leave the stage.

Students ages 4 to 14 can sign up for classes in the fall’s eight-week session running from September to November.

Classes give students opportunities to practice performing while learning the fundamentals of theater. Depending on their age and experience level, students may work on acting techniques, movement, musical theater and other skills designed to help them become more comfortable performing in front of others.

“You’re not only learning techniques about theater and musical theater,” Brent Marty, Civic’s director of music and education, said. “You’re learning life skills.”

Civic Education Programs Director Holly Stults said she has seen families return to Civic with their children and grandchildren, seeing firsthand how

lessons learned from theater can follow students into adulthood.

“We’re not just trying to turn out Broadway stars but human beings who can really approach the world in a creative, exciting way and think outside the box,” Stults said.

Stults and Marty said students develop confidence, discipline and teamwork while learning how to handle rejection. Stults said “learning how to deal with no in a positive way” can prepare students for future auditions, job interviews and other challenges.

Classes start at $200, and need-based scholarship opportunities are available for students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch or textbook assistance programs.

Immigration nightmare Editor, I read with interest the “Immigration debate comes to Fishers” article and would like to voice my opinion.

As a nation, we have an obligation to enforce immigration laws. Biden not only broke our laws, he participated in the illegal gathering of immigrants who were not vetted, and dumped them into our country. His so-called Border Czar Kamala Harris did nothing to enforce our laws. Then she had the audacity to tell everyone that the “border is secure.”

When politicians lie to us and the media does nothing about it, America gets hurt. The facts are clear — illegal immigration is a nightmare. The issue of refugees is a fraud. The article says we are a nation of laws but the Democratic Party doesn’t believe that, because all they do is break the laws. Nobody should enter this country without a thorough vetting. To be from South America and claim refugee status while

going through five other countries is ridiculous.

When (State) Sen. Fady Qaddoura has the audacity to say those pushing for mass deportation are somehow like the KKK, he is way off base and guilty of inciting criminality. Nothing could be further from the truth. The KKK was virtually entirely ran and supported by Democrats. I notice he left that fact out.

Finally, had Biden adhered to our laws we would not have gotten more than 20 million illegal aliens in our country during his time in office. Had the media stepped up and actually asked him the tough questions maybe they would have stopped the invasion.

Yes, it is an invasion and mass deportation is necessary to regain our respect and allow our country to truly protect its citizens. I have always wondered why Democrats don’t seem to care about the Americans being raped, robbed and murdered by illegal aliens?

Best-laid plans?

Commentary by Terry Anker There is nothing particularly strategic about it, strategic planning, that is. We fire off emails, convene blue-ribbon panels, talk at length about the failures of previous plans to move the ball, celebrate the production of a voluminous tome called “Vision 2045” or some such, and then we promptly file it away, not to be considered until the next round of planning comes calling.

Thirty-fourth President of the United States and World War II Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe Dwight D. Eisenhower said in a 1957 speech on national defense during the height of the Cold War, “Plans are worthless, but planning is everything.”

Is it that the value of the process is not the process but that planning requires some reflection, even at significantly distant intervals, on where we are at any given time? As we embark on the simplest of errands, consideration must be taken for the route and conveyance. How will we get the job done? We map out the presumed plan

and set out to achieve the mission. As we go merrily along, streets are closed (or washed away by a centennial storm event), mechanical calamity affects our driving, or any myriads of unforeseen occurrences disrupt our plans. Late 1980s boxing phenomena Mike Tyson remarked, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

Of course, we’d react pugilistically, rerouting or otherwise altering the original route to circumvent the disruption and find our way onward to the objective.

But if all goes well, we scarcely consider the plan. Talking on the phone to pass the time we absentmindedly drive to our destination, only taking note as GPS reminds us to “turn right ahead.”

Then once the errand is completed, we plot our way to the next. Is it strategic or merely intentional?
