By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The four candidates seeking to become Indiana’s next Secretary of State spoke about their backgrounds, visions and leadership styles during OneZone’s Voices of Leadership Luncheon Aug. 18 at FORUM Event Center in Fishers.

Democrat Beau Bayh, Republican Max Engling, Libertarian Lauri Shillings and Lincoln Party candidate Greg Ballard answered questions from moderator Jack Russell, OneZone CEO. The candidates will be on the ballot in the Nov. 3 general election. The winner will succeed scandal-plagued Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales, who finished third among candidates vying for the nomination at the Republican state party convention in June.

BAYH: CURB ‘WASTEFUL SPENDING’ Bayh is often asked the same question at his campaign stops: Is he running for office simply because his father and grandfather did?

Bayh’s father, Evan Bayh, served as Indiana governor and U.S. senator, and his grandfather, Birch Bayh, served as Bayh U.S. senator and state representative. He said he’s not running to simply follow in their footsteps, but their legacies have influenced him.

“Growing up and seeing the example that they were able to set and the impact that they were able to have on their state and their country, that affects you,” said Bayh, an Indianapolis resident and former U.S. Marine.

Bayh, an attorney, said if elected he would initiate an independent audit of the secretary of state’s office.

“My first goal is to rein in some of the wasteful spending and insider dealing that I think everyone in this room can agree is unacceptable that’s consumed this office,” Bayh said.

He said he is aiming to avoid the “di-

visiveness and anger” that is often prevalent in the political landscape.

ENGLING TOUTS EXPERIENCE Engling grew up in a family of eight siblings, worked multiple jobs to pay his way through college without debt and maneuvered through the ranks of various political jobs in Washington, D.C. Since moving back to Indiana, he’s worked for Beck’s Hybrids and Engling U.S. Sen. Jim Banks.

He believes his journey and work ethic make him the best fit to become secretary of state.

“I have the most relevant experience for this job, not just experience across the board,” he said. “It’s working for small businesses, filing my own small business with the secretary of state’s office, working for the Chief Elections Committee in the U.S. House, and then also working on elections here in the state of Indiana.”

The married father of four from Cicero said election integrity is among his top priorities if elected. He said he will work to ensure only U.S. citizens are voting, eligibility rules are clear, voter ID is required and voter rolls are maintained.

He also wants to create an election transparency portal.

BALLARD LEANS ON LEADERSHIP As the only candidate to have previously served in elected office, Ballard believes his background sets him apart.

“I think most people know that the incumbent has not done a good job,” he said. “There needs (to be) some experience in there.

can go in there and clean that place up.”

Ballard served as a Republican mayor of Indianapolis from 2008 to 2016. He said working through the implications of the 2015 Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which led to businesses and conventions threatening to pull out of Indiana, was among the most difficult challenges he’s faced as a leader.

“I felt the weight of 40 years of civic government on my shoulders as it looked like it was going away in three to four weeks, based on what was happening during that time frame,” he said.

“And I stood up to say no. Some things you can’t delegate.”

Ballard, a former Marine, said if elected he would not endorse, fundraise for or donate to political candidates. He feels it is inappropriate, as the secretary of state’s office oversees elections in the state.

SHILLINGS: STREAMLINE SERVICES As a state official for Indiana’s Libertarian Party, Shillings has experience working with the secretary of state’s office. It hasn’t always been easy, she said.

“I see the frustrations not only from the business side, but on the election side of indiShillings viduals across the state interfacing with that,” she said. “That is also part of the reason I decided to run for this office is to make sure that would be a seamless experience for people.”

Shillings said she wants to improve transparency by creating a portal that provides easy-to-find information about business filings and campaign donations.

“Right now, it’s really a convoluted kind of thing to go and find out that information,” she said.

A Carmel resident, Shillings is a creative director at the University of Indianapolis and owns a marketing business.

A proposal to create a dismount zone along a busy W Main St section of the Monon Greenway is meeting resistance from some local bicyclists.

The zone, which would be between Main Street and 1st Street SW, is among several amendments proposed to Carmel’s micromobility ordinance. The council is revisiting the ordinance after finding it didn’t curb unsafe behavior as much as they’d hoped.

The council’s land use committee has been discussing potential changes. Councilor Anita Joshi, who chairs the committee, gave a brief update on the matter at the council’s Aug. 17 meeting.

“We have been working with the police department and have gotten recommendations from them for a mandatory dismount zone on the Monon at Main 1St St Sw Street, and to have people be able to get off their bikes so that that they could safely cross that much busier area of the Monon, and then to again remount when the bike lanes resumed as separate bike lanes,” she said.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, several people said they do not support the idea.

W Main St Kelly Nagy, who also frequently bikes multiple children along the trail, said the popularity of the trail is an “incredible problem for a city to have.” She said the dismount zone will cause “mental friction” for bicyclists wondering where it begins and ends and offered an idea to ease congestion in the area.

“There’s one underutilized area that seems just right for the picking: The red brick roads right by Bazbeaux,” Nagy said. “Why not make these bicycles a priority? Free up more space for pedestrians and people. Bikers have more space, too, and for the cars, there are so many ways to filter traffic while preserving controlled access for deliveries, valet, police.”

Carmel resident Dakota Crawford said he finds it 1St St Sw ironic that the city is considering a dismount zone in an area that contains a statue of a girl learning to ride a bike.

“We’re treating the Monon like it’s purely recreational, but in my view, that’s a mistake,” Crawford said. “The Monon has made bicycling a legitimate form of transportation, and we should regulate it as such.”

Weekend of Public Witness ICE display set for Midtown

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel’s Midtown Plaza will be one of more than 50 sites in Indiana set to host events this weekend that call for an end to Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention at the Miami Correctional Facility in Miami County.

The Weekend of Public Witness set for Aug. 28 to 30 is being coordinated by the Indiana Osters Organizing Project, a collaboration of nonprofits and other groups and individuals focused on social and economic justice issues. In Carmel, event partners include Carmel Indivisible, From Strangers to Neighbors, Hamilton County Democracy Coalition and Indiana Aid. The event in Midtown Plaza, set for 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 30, will include a walk-through display that begins with general information about immigration in the U.S. and narrows to focus on ICE detainees at the Miami Correctional Facility, which is approximately 10 miles north of Kokomo.

Indiana began housing ICE detainees at the facility last year after signing an agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. In July, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun ordered the Indiana Department of Corrections to conduct an internal audit after detainee deaths, a lack of basic medical care and other issues were reported there.

Courtney Osters, a Carmel resident and volunteer with the Indiana Organizing Project, said she hopes the display will help educate passersby about conditions at the facility and the impact on families of loved ones in detention.

“My deepest hope is that we can discover that we have more in common than we don’t and that people are basically good and they will try to help each other when they know what the stakes are, what the impacts are and how they can help,” Osters said.

Visitors will be able to speak with representatives from partner organizations before or after viewing the display, according to Sharon Boller, founder of From Strangers to Neighbors. Her non-

profit provides assistance to refugees after initial resettlement support ends.

“At the tables we will ask people how they want to connect,” said Boller, a Carmel resident. “That might be through making a donation and supporting the work of any one of those organizations. It might be making a phone call to the governor’s office to say that they’re advocating for the closure of the detention facility.”

Carmel’s Weekend of Public Witness event Mora will be more passive than most others planned in the state, according to Indiana Organizing Project Executive Director Stuart Mora. A majority of the events are prayer vigils, he said, while some are rallies.

Although the detention facility is in Miami County, it is housing immigrants from throughout the state. Mora said his organization has been working to aid a Carmel-area couple and their young child, who is a U.S. citizen, experiencing tremendous difficulty.

“Mom is currently here legally. Our government is going to take away her legal status soon,” Mora said. “Dad was picked up for a traffic infraction and was detained for several months.

They didn’t have the money to hire an attorney, and there really wasn’t much that could be done. He was deported to a third country. They’re trying to figure out how to reunite, and at the same time, she lost her mom and her brother in a natural disaster in her home country.”

The Trump administration has removed temporary protective status for more than a million immigrants who were in the U.S. legally. Many of them had lived in the U.S. for years, some for decades.

“You can say, ‘Get the hell out of our country,’ or you can say, ‘How do we surround our neighbors with love when they’re going through really hard times?’” Mora said.

Class of 1975 donates crest news@youarecurrent.com A new crest at Carmel High School is courtesy of the class of 1975.

The alumni group raised $7,500 for the installation of an academic crest at Door 21 at CHS. It features the Latin motto “Veritas, Scientia, Mores” which translates as Truth, Knowledge and Character. Those values are what the alumni group believes Carmel Clay Schools embodies.

“We lived these three values because of people like yourself,” Class President Keith Wooden said to CHS Principal Tim Phares when the crest was presented. “You are instilling those values in another generation.”

The alumni group came up with the idea of a crest as it planned a 50th reunion. The group worked with the CCS administration to develop the project.

Wooden stated he hopes the gift sets a new standard for alumni groups giving back to their school.

“We want other classes to be challenged to give gifts to the school that mean something and (have) a heritage and a vision for it,” he said.

The 50th reunion and crest gathering served as an opportunity for the class of 1975 to walk the halls of their alma mater and reminisce about their school days while seeing how much has changed in the last several decades.

HSHC to ‘Clear the Shelters’ news@youarecurrent.com The Humane Society for Hamilton County has scheduled a “Clear the Shelters” event to encourage adoptions and reduce the number of animals waiting for a new home.

“We have run out of space and our animals are running out of hope as they wait months — or even years — to find their forever homes,” a news release stated. “Every kennel, office and popup crate has been full since late June, with over 600 animals currently in the building.”

With recent historic flooding affecting neighboring animal shelters, HSHC also has taken in 20 cats from Muncie Animal Care & Services, adding to its

capacity concerns.

In an effort to save as many lives as possible, HSHC is hosting a one-day, $10 adoption event from noon to 5 p.m.

USA Archery Olympic Trials coming to Grand Park news@yoaurecurrent.com An ancient sport is coming to Westfield in 2027, when Droplight Grand Park Sports Campus hosts the 143rd USA Archery Target Nationals and 2027 U.S. Open.

The events also will feature Stage 1 2028 Olympic Team Trials Qualifications, which include compound archery for the first time, according to a news release. Since archery returned to the Olympic Games in 1972, only recurve has been included. For the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, compound has been added as a mixed-team event.

Matt Stutzman, known as “The Armless Archer” and a gold medalist at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, plans to compete in the event and hopes to earn a place on the compound team — with the ultimate goal of becoming the first Paralympic gold medalist to win an Olympic gold medal in archery.

Karen Radcliff, president and CEO of Hamilton County Tourism, stated that hosting the opening stages of the 2028 Olympic Team Trials Qualification events is a defining moment for Hamilton County.

“We’re proud to partner with USA Archery, Droplight Grand Park Sports Campus and the City of Westfield to welcome the best archers from across the nation as they compete in the U.S. Team Trials, National Target Championships, USAT Series Final and U.S. Open,” she stated. “Hamilton County

is built for championship competition and ready to showcase its state-of-theart facilities, hospitality and passion for sport on this national stage.”

Westfield Mayor Scott Willis stated that the city has built a national reputation as a premier destination for sports, and hosting USA Archery marks an exciting new chapter for the community.

“For the first time, athletes will compete in Westfield for the opportunity to represent Team USA at the LA28 Olympic Games,” he stated. “We are proud to welcome these world-class competitors, their families and archery fans from across the country next August.”

Greg Stremlaw, co-chief executive officer of Grand Park Sports and Entertainment, stated that every sports venue aspires to host events that inspire athletes and create unforgettable memories.

 Flood donation drive underway — Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank and Hamilton County Trustee Association members are coordinating a countywide donation effort to support Hamilton County residents impacted by the recent flooding. Township trustee offices will serve as donation drop-off locations. Donations will be coordinated through the food bank for distribution to residents in need. Items needed include heavy-duty trash bags, buckets, heavy-duty sponges paper towels, cleaning products, bleach, rubber gloves, mops and brooms, disposable face masks and scrub brushes.

Author to discuss mystery

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Madeline Martin’s passion for history was ignited at a young age.

Her father served in the U.S. Army, and he was stationed in Germany three times for a total of 12 years when she was growing up.

“There are so many things in Europe that are just so incredibly old,” she said. “You have these amazing tour Martin guides that are effusive about these amazing places. I’ve always been a lover of stories and hearing them tell these stories made me kind of look at these old buildings and think, ‘Wow, if walls could talk.’ So, I feel like it really was sort of almost a catalyst for me becoming an author.”

Martin will discuss her latest book, “A Time of Witches,” at 1 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Carmel Clay Public Library. Registration is required for the free event.

The book will be released Sept. 1 by Hanover Square Press, which is a division of HarperCollins Publishers.

It’s a historical mystery novel with a dual timeline story of two women, centuries apart.

“The two women are united by a curse that transcends about 400 years,” Martin said. “One woman from the past was accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake. The other woman in the contemporary time period has discovered this ancestor and her fate. She realizes she has to save her ancestor from that fate or suffer the consequences, which is basically she will cease to exist.”

was from England. She was burned at the stake Aug. 27, 1645.

Martin did research by spending time at both locations.

“I had over 100 nonfiction books that I used and then did on-site research at both locations,” she said. “I put together the whole plot and all the character charts, and then I wrote the book. I only write one book at a time, and I only do about one book a year.”

Martin will discuss her process of writing and her extensive research during the book discussion.

“I’m pretty much sticking with historical fiction now,” Martin said.

Martin, who is based in St. Augustine, Fla., will be on a two-month tour.

She’ll do an event in Bury St. Edmunds in England, where the book was set.

“Every time she steps in the gym, we’re impressed with what she’s able to bring to the court with respect to her leadership, her demands of other people and her expectations to Comer win and be competitive at all times,” Shamrocks coach Sean Keeve said. “Outside of her ability and success in the middle, her abilities to make those around her better (are valuable) because of how big a threat she is to score.”

Keeve said she provides a lot of offensive stability.

“She hit well over .500 (percent) last year, which is absolutely insane, where every time she is getting set, she’s scoring,” he said. “She doesn’t make a ton of errors. Anywhere we put her in the offense, she is very lethal for us.”

Comer is one of nine seniors and three captains.

“I think every one of our seniors are going to have a little bit more of a leadership role,” she said.

The University of Louisville recruit

said it would be amazing to be named Indiana Miss Volleyball or Indiana Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year.

“But really, I’m just trying to focus on getting myself ready for Louisville and getting to that next level,” she said.

Comer plans to graduate this semester and enroll at Louisville in January.

She said it should help her learn to balance athletics along with the college workload of classes. She made a verbal commitment to the Cardinals in the summer of 2025.

“When I started watching college volleyball, they were having a historic season, finishing 32-1 (in 2021),” said Comer, who has played with the Munciana club team for the past six seasons.

“Something about their court presence and culture really grabbed me. I went to their camp two years in a row and absolutely fell in love with the campus, the culture, the girls there and the coaches.

I do know a few people there already who absolutely love it, so all that kind of pulled me toward it.”

Recovery underway after White River surges into homes, destroys bridge

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com On Aug. 18, Carmel officials said a pipe that carries most of the city’s wastewater to a treatment plant had a 90 percent chance of breaching in heavy flood waters, sending its contents into the White River.

Thanks to a coordinated effort involving military helicopters, giant sandbags and a lot of hard work, the likelihood of a pipe breach dropped to 10 percent by Aug. 19, according to City Engineer Bradley Pease.

Pease gave the update at a press conference that featured officials from the city, county and the Indiana National Guard.

City officials said Aug. 17 that there was a significant chance that the flooded White River, which had caused Blue Woods Creek near 106th Street and Hazel Dell Parkway to reverse course and reroute, would alter its path into the nearby Martin Marietta quarry.

Along the way, it was expected to breach the wastewater pipe.

But as the river began to recede, officials developed a plan.

“We found an opportunity to take some action to at least try to mitigate that situation,” Pease said. “Our street department worked tirelessly, 24/7. A number of crews (moved) 150-plus truckloads of concrete and other material to try to stabilize the bank. We eventually found an opportunity to fully dam Blue Woods Creek to protect that sanitary pipe.”

Once that was complete, Carmel contacted the National Guard to assist with the next phase. For several hours, two Blackhawk helicopters lowered 73 2,000-pound sandbags into place to significantly decrease the flow of the river into the creek.

While the wastewater pipes have likely been saved, the Hazel Dell Parkway bridge over Blue Woods Creek is a total loss. On Aug. 17, Hamilton County Commissioner Christine Altman said she expected it would take at least two years to replace the bridge, but two days later she said it may happen faster.

“The governor has signed an executive order that is speeding up the permitting process not only for us but for the residents that will need to have any type of permits in the flood-affected areas, which is excellent news,” Altman said. “We think we’ve devised a plan to, concurrently with design, remove the debris, which is significant in that water course, and have that area ready to bid and let contracts in for reconstruction of that bridge.”

She said officials explored installing a temporary bridge but determined that solution was cost prohibitive and would slow down full bridge replacement.

Continued from Page 18 Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam noted that it will likely be more difficult to get materials needed for concrete road construction projects because the quarry is expected to be shut down for some time.

Officials from Martin Marietta declined to comment.

Billions of gallons of water had already poured into the quarry by the afternoon of Aug. 16, which Finkam said may have been beneficial to areas in Indianapolis already experiencing severe floods.

“Mother Nature, with all the flooding, created an incredible stormwater detention area for us to hold 9 billion gallons of water that otherwise would have been going down the White River into Indianapolis and causing additional flooding,” Finkam said. “So, if there is a silver lining in this, it has slowed the impact downstream for flooding and has allowed us to keep people south of here safe in the short term.”

Altman urged everyone to stay off of the White River until further notice. County commissioners issued a

weeklong travel ban for everyone except first responders through Aug. 25.

“Conditions still are dangerous south of 116th Street,” she said. “You put your life in peril, and more importantly, could put in peril our first responders who might have to go out and save you. So please heed the order.”

Officials said there is no contamination or interruption risk to Carmel’s drinking water.

The White River flooding has closed several Carmel parks for the foreseeable future.

Hazel Landing Park and River Heritage Park, which are adjacent to the river, are closed until further notice. Even after the water recedes, work to clean the parks will need to take place before they reopen.

The White River Greenway north of 14001 River Road also was closed because of flooding.

Flowing Well Park closed but was expected to reopen more quickly than the other parks.

The artesian well in the park is expected to be closed longer, as it was contaminated by flood water and will need to be cleaned and tested to ensure the water is safe to drink.

Carmel City Council President Matt Snyder urged people to stay clear of the closed parks for their own safety and said they risk being arrested if they bypass barricades.

“You will be charged with trespassing if you step on that ground,” he said. “To this point, we have lost zero lives. It would be asinine if someone goes exploring and dies in the undercurrent. Those parks are closed, and if you are found, you will be arrested. It’s that simple.”

Horses, homeowner evacuated from flooded Carmel Equestrian Center

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Kathy Arnold woke up at 4 a.m. Aug. 15 to the sound of rushing water.

She knew the White River had been rising after recent storms to the north, but she believed it had crested the previous evening. She was wrong.

The cloudy water pouring into her tri-level home on Carmel’s River Road wasn’t immediately her main concern. Between the house and the river sat barns housing 19 horses, three miniature horses and two miniature donkeys.

Arnold, owner of the Carmel Equestrian Center, moved the animals to higher ground, but as the river kept rising it became clear they needed to be evacuated — quickly. So, she reached out to the center’s employees and Carmel first responders to develop a plan.

“I’m good under pressure,” said Arnold, a nurse at Ascension St. Vincent Heart Center. “But there were moments where I’m starting to feel like I’m going to have a panic attack watching and trying to make decisions.”

By the time the horse trailers arrived, they were forced to park on River Road because the equestrian center’s property had become submerged. So, Arnold and others — including members of the Carmel Fire Department — walked the horses through rising water to be loaded up. The miniature ones had to swim for a bit, Arnold said.

“I’m taking horses out of a barn and a trash can is floating by, or a tote of equipment is heading your way, or a log,” she said.

The horses remained remarkably calm throughout the ordeal.

“They could have really freaked out,” Arnold said. “In the water floated a giant tractor tire, and then it’s keeping you from opening a gate, and you can’t see the (ground). So, you don’t know where you step down.”

Eventually all of the horses were loaded onto trailers and transported to temporary homes nearby. They began returning to the equestrian center Aug. 19 after a team cleanup effort.

Although the center was set to reopen soon, Arnold said it will take time to make repairs and return to normal operations.

Fixing up her home, which was built in 1972, might take even longer. The flood damaged flooring, drywall and just about everything else that wasn’t on the top level.

“At 4 a.m., there was like 2 inches of water in the lower level,” Arnold said. “By 1 p.m. the midlevel of the house had 6 inches of water, so the whole bottom was full.”

For now, Arnold is staying with family nearby.

Unlike the horses, it’s not clear when she can move back home.

Community supports displaced residents

Little did firefighters know those skills would be put to the test weeks later as the White River overflowed its banks into dozens of nearby homes.

“In 22 years (as a firefighter), I have never seen anything like this,” CFD Public Information Officer Tim Griffin said. “This was just a truly unimaginable amount of water that came in in a short period of time.”

CFD received its first call to assist a resident out of a flooding house at approximately 6 a.m. Aug. 15. As firefighters checked on other homes in the area, the waters surged and their outing became an hourslong rescue operation, Griffin said.

In some areas, the only way out of the neighborhood was by watercraft.

“Even with the boating equipment we have, we had firefighters commandeering a canoe that was on the side of somebody’s house to get people out,” Griffin said. “We had one individual that kayaked up and had a jon boat that we used.”

More than 40 residents near the White River were evacuated from their homes. Many gathered at Northview Church, which had opened its atrium as a day shelter for those who were displaced.

“There was a couple that came in, their shoes and socks are wet,” Northview Executive Pastor Mike Polster said.

“They got rescued off a boat. They have their two dogs and nothing but their laptop. It’s heartbreaking.”

Then, Northview officials agreed to offer overnight accommodations for residents of the Bickford of Carmel assisted living facility, which was evacuated as a precaution as waters rose. Several residents — transported to the church on wheelchair-accessible Carmel Clay Schools buses — stayed overnight in the church on cots before returning home the next day. The flood had not reached their building.

For most of the other residents, it’s unclear when their homes will be habitable again. So, Northview and many other organizations are working to

provide necessities and other forms of assistance for the foreseeable future.

Northview employees from all campuses spent Aug. 19 distributing care packages from Missouri-based Convoy of Hope to residents in Carmel, Indianapolis and other areas most impacted by the floods.

“We are taking those things out into the community and just praying with people,” said Ann Lane, Northview local missions and project coordinator. “We want to focus on just sharing the love of Jesus in a really, really hard time.”

Retailers, community drives tackle school costs news@youarecurrent.com As Hamilton County students return to the classroom, Walmart is rolling back prices on numerous backto-school items for families, even as demand for physical supplies shifts toward digital learning tools.

Walmart store manager Ryan Day said although physical supply needs remain high for elementary students, purchasing habits shift as students advance in grades.

“Maybe it’s because some of the stuff is more digital,” Day said. “You still need the basics, especially for the younger grades, but as they progress toward high school, they need fewer supplies.”

Despite the shift toward technology, area school districts emphasize that traditional classroom tools remain essential alongside digital platforms.

Ambrosia coming to Carmel

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A French restaurant in downtown Carmel will soon close to make way for an Italian-inspired concept with longterm success in Broad Ripple.

Josephine, which opened in early 2025 at 110 W. Main St., closed Aug. 23.

Owner Ambrosia Hospitality Group is now transforming the space to house a second location for Ambrosia, which is expected to debut in late September.

“This isn’t a sad goodbye. It’s a return to our roots,” the Josephine restaurant owners posted Aug. 12 on Instagram.

“Josephine has been such a special chapter for our family, and we’re incredibly proud of everything we created here. But sometimes the next step forward takes you back to where it all be-

gan. For our family, that’s Ambrosia.”

The Pizzi family, who immigrated from Italy to the U.S. in the 1960s, opened Ambrosia in 1979 in Indianapolis. It remains in operation at 5903 N. College Ave. in Indianapolis.

“What started with Gino (Pizzi)’s dream in 1979 has grown into generations of family, recipes, tradition and countless memories made around the table,” the post states. “And after so much love for Ambrosia over the years, it feels only right to bring a little more of it home.”

The 5,162-square-foot space previously housed The Pint Room, which closed in late 2023.

Alternate View, an eye care center in Carmel City Center, has been named America’s Finest Optical Retailer by Invision magazine, becoming the first Indiana business to receive the honor.

Founded and owned by Mollie Tavel Kaback, granddaughter of David Tavel, founder of the Dr. Tavel optical retail chain, Alternate View aims to challenge traditional optical experiences by offering services such as dry eye therapy and personalized eyewear styling. “(Receiving this award) is a true honor and a confirmation of our unique approach for merging eye care and facial aesthetics,” Tavel Kaback said. “It’s very motivating and a bit of a major honor for our team to be such a young entity and feel so much support from not only the optical industry but also our community and our partners.”

Tavel Kaback opened the store in December 2024 and hired nurse practitioner Liz Jordan to help clients “feel their most confident without feeling like facial aesthetics have to augment how they look or who they are.”

“We’re looking for additional community organizations that we can bring into our space, host them and serve as a destination that is unique and makes you think differently when you’re there,” she said.

Recycling program gives electronics new life

By Piper Bailey Piper@youarecurrent.com As businesses and residents accumulate outdated computers, laptops and other electronic, devices finding a responsible way to dispose of them can be a challenge. Indy Laptops, a Carmel-based company, offers free electronics recycling through its Technology Lifecycle Solutions program.

Businesses can have large quantities of electronics picked up and transported to Indy Laptops’ off-site location.

Items are cataloged and monitored throughout the process. Customers can receive a record of what was collected.

They also can keep their hard drives or have the company destroy them and provide certificates of destruction.

“We feel very strongly about people’s data,” Indy Laptops store technician Jean Stafford said. “We make sure that the data is not able to be recovered in any way, shape or form.”

The recycling program is part of Indy Laptops’ broader range of services, which include repairs, virus removal and sales. Equipment that can be reused or repurposed is refurbished and sold in-store and online.

Stafford said the company focuses on refurbishing business-class computers because they are “better quality and

longer lasting.” Parts such as screens and RAM can be reused before remaining materials are sent to Indy Laptops’ registered recycling partner.

“If you can carry it in, we will take it,” Stafford said. However, she noted that old-style televisions and monitors with large backs are not accepted and need to be disposed as hazardous waste.

The company launched online in February 2000 before opening a store in 2010.

Actress juggles duties in ‘Ring of Fire’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Sarah Hund looks forward to this juggling act.

Besides her acting role, Hund is the assistant director and associate director of music in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s presentation of the musical “Ring of Fire,” which runs Aug. 27 to Oct. 4 the Indianapolis venue.

“Beef & Boards has assembled a great team,” said Hund, whose character doesn’t have a name. “Jeff Stockberger is the director, Kristy Templet is the music director and Sally Mitchell is the choreographer. All of us have worked together in many different capacities over the years, and (I) can’t wait to see what we create together with this production. It’s going to be one heck of a collaboration.”

In 2024, Hund performed in Actors Theatre of Indiana’s “Ring of Fire,” which follows the story of Johnny Cash.

“No two productions of ‘Ring of Fire’ are the same, as the script and score leave a lot of room for interpretation,” she said. “In the 2024 ATI production, I was the only woman in the cast, so I played all the female roles in the show. In this Beef & Boards production, we have three women — hooray. I will be singing some of the same songs I did in the ATI version, but many of the arrangements will be different.”

Hund has performed in one other “Ring of Fire” production.

“Though I have ‘almost’ done it an additional four times,” Hund said.

“And I have performed in Johnny Cash tribute concerts, too. Audiences always go crazy for ‘Ring of Fire.’

Johnny Cash is such an iconic figure in American music and, wow, he wrote and performed so many great songs.”

This will be Hund’s 33rd show with Beef & Boards.

“I love working at the Beef,” she said. “The regulars who work there often truly are like a family. My first show there was ‘Smoke on the Moun-

tain’ in 2007, and that will always hold a place in my heart. Over the years, I’ve gotten to play many bucket-list roles, including The Witch in ‘Into the Woods,’ Fantine in ‘Les Miserables’ and Lina Lamont in ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ among others.”

Hund said she no longer lives in Indianapolis but spends a lot of time in the city.

“Over the years, I’ve made a lot of friends in Indy, so I always enjoy my time here,” she said.

Along with theater work, she plays fiddle for the Blue Eyed Bettys, a three-person band. She has played the violin since fifth grade.

“We haven’t performed a concert in over a year, sadly, because our schedules haven’t aligned,” she said. “But we do have a Patreon, where we post a new video every month for our subscribers. We hope to get back to tour-

ing and recording again soon.”

When she is in the Indianapolis area, she frequently fills in at Bach to Rock Music School in Carmel and Zionsville as manager, substitute teacher, band director and events site manager.

“I served as director of the Bach to Rock Zionsville location during the (COVID-19) pandemic, when performing jobs were scarce, so I am familiar with all aspects of running the schools,” she said. “This allows me to jump in wherever the need arises. I’m grateful to have maintained a close relationship with such a terrific music school and I love working with the kids.”

Indiana University and Lawrence Central High School graduate Devin McDuffy will make his Beef & Boards debut in the ensemble cast.

Lessons go beyond the stage

By Piper Bailey Piper@youarecurrent.com For more than 80 years, Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre’s Jr. Civic program has taught young performers more than acting, dancing or singing.

Its classes build confidence, discipline, teamwork and skills that students carry with them long after they leave the stage.

Students ages 4 to 14 can sign up for classes in the fall’s eight-week session running from September to November.

Classes give students opportunities to practice performing while learning the fundamentals of theater. Depending on their age and experience level, students may work on acting techniques, movement, musical theater and other skills designed to help them become more comfortable performing in front of others.

“You’re not only learning techniques about theater and musical theater,” said Brent Marty, Civic’s director of music and education. “You’re learning life skills.”

Amid the chaos of a St. Louis farmers market in the early 1970s, a legendary jazz career began when Todd Williams and fellow elementary school students ended a semester of saxophone lessons with a performance at the market.

Half a century later, Williams still remembers playing a solo during a song called “Hip Lamb” — a groovy version of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” — and how it began a string of people noticing his playing and encouraging him.

“I had reinforcement time and time again,” Williams said.

That encouragement eventually came from some of the biggest names in American jazz, including trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Williams has become a renowned performer, writer and instructor in his own right.

Williams, 59, later found his way to Indianapolis, and he’s bringing that lifetime of jazz experience to the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts’ Local Mix Music Series. The show, featuring Williams, Kenny Phelps on drums and Bethany Robinson on bass as the Todd Williams Trio, is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at The Tarkington in Carmel. Tickets are $10 and are available at thecenterpresents.org.

Williams was barely old enough to drive when he found himself in an impromptu audition for Marsalis.

He and a friend attended a show and ended up going backstage to meet the band. Someone backstage recognized Williams as a star saxophonist and got Williams to play for Marsalis.

“I was just feeling like, ‘I can’t believe I’m playing in front of these guys,’” Williams said. “And I didn’t really play too well.”

Marsalis saw potential in him, though. He sent him 11 cassette tapes of saxophone solos for Williams to learn.

Williams did just that, and the next time he saw Marsalis, he played one of the solos. Marsalis was impressed with his work ethic, and when he needed someone to fill in for a while, Marsalis called Williams.

Williams toured with Marsalis in the late 1980s and early 1990s and was a featured artist for the Lincoln Center Jazz Band from 1989 to 2016. As a writer,

he has won four ASCAP Plus Awards for Composers.

He has transitioned to teaching as well, which eventually led him to Indiana Wesleyan, where he has been an assistant professor of Music Education since 2012. He said he and his family have loved living in the Midwest and that the music scene in Indianapolis has been impressive. He praised the number of musical groups in town as well as vibrant venues such as the Payne & Mencias Palladium in Carmel and the Jazz Kitchen in Broad Ripple.

“I always kind of boast a little bit on Indianapolis,” Williams said. “Most cities, they struggle to have an orchestra.

Just an orchestra, you know? And we have two orchestras, lots of venues and people who play jazz, people who do all sorts of things.”

Julia Shildmyer, director of Education & Community Engagement at Allied Solutions Center, said the venue is fortunate to have Williams nearby and willing to share his expertise.

“He has enriched our jazz and education offerings in so many ways, and I think we’ve provided some memorable opportunities for his students as well,” Shildmyer stated via email.

Williams said the Sept. 3 show will make even non-jazz aficionados sing along and snap their fingers.

“The idea is to keep it simple, keep it singable, and keep it fun, but at the same time, incorporate improvisations that are really satisfying to the person who’s a more experienced listener,” he said.

Medicare Advantage comes with costs Editor, I read Dr. Kirsten Turchan’s Aug. 18 letter on Medicare Advantage with interest. She is right that the program’s vision, dental, hearing and transportation benefits are real, and many seniors appreciate them.

But those benefits come with costs her letter did not mention. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, when Medicare Advantage plans deny skilled nursing facility care and patients appeal, 95 percent of those denials are overturned. That means many seniors are being denied care they actually qualify for, and most never challenge the decision. For long‑term care hospital stays, the initial denial rate reaches 65 percent.

Medicare Advantage is also not a bargain for taxpayers. The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, a nonpartisan agency that reports to Congress, estimates that in 2026 Medicare will pay Medicare Advantage insurers $76 billion more than it would have spent covering the same patients under traditional Medicare. That extra spending raises Part B premiums for every beneficiary, including seniors who never enrolled in Medicare Advantage.

Extra benefits matter, but so does whether patients receive the care they are owed. Congress should consider both sides before deciding how to “protect” this program.

Imposition of religious laws violates Constitution Editor, Cantor Janice Roger’s letter criticizing Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith’s recent comments on Islam fails to stand up to scrutiny.

Beckwith called for a public ban on mosques that use external loudspeakers to blare the Islamic call to prayer five times a day, labeling the practice intrusive. Roger is offended at his statement, though noise ordinances that enforce neutral limits on volume and times for all amplified sounds are legal and commonsensical and even used in Muslim nations like Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. We suspect that Rogers wouldn’t be sympathetic to Christians or Jews who planned to publicly broadcast several times daily their equivalent of “Allah is greatest,” so why her blind spot with Muslims?

Roger then accuses Beckwith of “fueling the fires of fear” in our nation.

This inverts reality and shows that she has learned nothing from the terrible lessons taught by Oct. 7. Jews actually do have a great deal to fear in these times, as Jewish lives and freedoms are

existentially threatened by Islamic supremacism and violence in every corner of the globe; as mosques across the U.S. call for the destruction of Jews, Christians and America; as 44 percent of Muslim Americans in a recent Pew poll admit supporting Hamas, a genocidally anti-Jewish, anti-Christian, anti-American, and anti-Western U.S.-designated terrorist organization; and as prominent Muslim American politicians actively promote antisemitism.

The ultimate problem is that Islamic sharia law is designed to impose its rule on all individuals, even non-Muslims, as seen around the world. The imposition of any one religion’s laws violates the Constitutional protections that have made America uniquely inviting to Jews and other religious minorities.

By ignoring this elephant in the room, Roger betrays those values she claims she wants to protect.

Recycling a very trashy topic Commentary by Dick Wolfsie The two of us have maintained a close association for many years, but I am sad to report that things have gotten a little bumpy. Our weekly trip to the curb has become hard to manage. The wheels have come off our relationship. Here’s the story.

A few weeks ago, we discovered that one of our trash receptacles was missing one of its two wheels. Apparently, in the process of disposing of our garbage, the sanitation truck that hoists our discarded refuse each week had shaken loose this essential feature of the unit.

Our bin now lacked front-wheel drive.

I am very good to my bins. I even have them professionally scrubbed. I think they enjoy the process. It does look like more fun than a massage. We actually have three bins. The two yellow ones are for recycling, and the one in question is blue.

Now, therefore, be it ordained by the Board of Trustees of TriCo Regional Sewer Utility, Indiana: Section 1. Every FOG Facility whose premises are served by the sewage works shall be charged the monthly FOG fee of $45 per pretreatment device.

The fee is established to enable the Utility to recover from FOG Facility users the increased costs of operating and maintaining the sewage works.

Section 2. Prior Schedule of Monthly User Charges This ordinance shall be supplementary to Ordinance 05-12-2025. Nothing in the Ordinance shall be construed as limiting the applicability of the Utility's various use ordinances or other definitions or terms contained in other Ordinances.

Section 11. The invalidity of any section, clause, sentence, or provision of this Ordinance shall not affect the validity of any part of this Ordinance which can be given effect without such invalid part or parts.

Section 12. The revised rates shall become effective November 1, 2026, and thereafter.

Now, here’s the problem. How do you get rid of a trash bin that’s missing a wheel? It wouldn’t fit in my car, and if it did, where would I take it? Can you recycle a trash bin? Maybe the trash service could take it. Not a chance. I left it out for a month, and they just emptied it, even though it was already empty.

Then I put a note on it that said: THIS

IS TRASH! I felt really stupid telling an experienced sanitation worker what trash is.

Then my wife Mary Ellen called the company that handles pickups, but they apparently had a hard time deciding who would assist us: The trash guys or the recycling guys? This is a very competitive profession (lots of trash talk), but they promised they were working on a solution. We finally got a call saying the service would come by and either replace the wheel or give us a brand-new bin.

They did both.

So now we have four bins, but we only have room in our garage for three.

The extra bin is on our lawn. It’s kind of an eyesore. It’s been there several weeks. We are back to square one. Talk about a vicious re-cycle.

Best-laid plans?

Commentary by Terry Anker There is nothing particularly strategic about it, strategic planning, that is. We fire off emails, convene blue-ribbon panels, talk at length about the failures of previous plans to move the ball, celebrate the production of a voluminous tome called “Vision 2045” or some such, and then we promptly file it away, not to be considered until the next round of planning comes calling.

Thirty-fourth President of the United States and World War II Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe Dwight D. Eisenhower said in a 1957 speech on national defense during the height of the Cold War, “Plans are worthless, but planning is everything.”

Is it that the value of the process is not the process but that planning requires some reflection, even at significantly distant intervals, on where we are at any given time? As we embark on the simplest of errands, consideration must be taken for the route and conveyance. How will we get the job done? We map out the presumed plan

and set out to achieve the mission. As we go merrily along, streets are closed (or washed away by a centennial storm event), mechanical calamity affects our driving, or any myriads of unforeseen occurrences disrupt our plans. Late 1980s boxing phenomena Mike Tyson remarked, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

Of course, we’d react pugilistically, rerouting or otherwise altering the original route to circumvent the disruption and find our way onward to the objective.

But if all goes well, we scarcely consider the plan. Talking on the phone to pass the time we absentmindedly drive to our destination, only taking note as GPS reminds us to “turn right ahead.”

Then once the errand is completed, we plot our way to the next. Is it strategic or merely intentional?
