Mother-son bring new vision to Brownsburg’s Spice Club

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com When Monica Emani and her son, Rey Chaudhary, took ownership of Spice Club in Brownsburg June 1, they were embarking on their first business venture — and another chapter in a journey that began thousands of miles away in India.

Today, they are working to put their own stamp on the restaurant, from its menu and cocktails to its atmosphere and long-term future.

Chaudhary was born and raised in India until he was 14.

He and Emani moved to the United States in 2016, eventually settling in the Carmel area. Emani worked multiple jobs to support the family, while Chaudhary attended Carmel High School and later Indiana University Kokomo.

After graduating with a degree in computer science, Chaudhary decided to take the leap with Emani. A family friend told them the previous owner of Spice Club was selling the business.

“We were excited but nervous at the same time because we didn’t know anything about this industry,” Chaudhary said.

For Emani, the path to business ownership was especially meaningful. Only a few years ago, she and her son had very little to call their own after things went awry in the first house they lived in after moving to the U.S. “We were just by ourselves on the side of the road,” Chaudhary said. “I think we had two suitcases and two phones.”

At the time, Chaudhary remembers telling his mother they would make it work.

“We will live in a broken house,” he told her. “We’ll drive a broken car, but we’re not going back.”

With help from people they met along the way, the two rebuilt their lives. Emani worked three jobs and up to 80 hours per week at times. Among those who helped was a close friend, Yogesh Mahant, whom Emani considers family.

Mahant helped her obtain a vehicle and later traveled back to the United States from India to help her purchase the restaurant property.

“We have been blessed by so many good people along the way,” Emani said. “There are truly so many great people here.”

Now, Emani and Chaudhary are bringing their experiences and their Indian heritage to the Spice Club menu.

The restaurant, at 2679 S. Green St. in Brownsburg, offers Indian fusion cuisine representing different regions and influences, including South Indian dishes such as vindaloo and Chettinad, North Indian favorites such as butter chicken, and Indo-Chinese dishes.

Chaudhary also creates the restaurant’s cocktails. Popular choices include the guava margarita, Long Island, Old Fashioned and a spiced mojito. Several drinks carry personal significance, including the Yogi, named for Mahant, and the Saffron Indian Dreams, which uses house-made saffron syrup.

“I’m just trying to share my culture,” Chaudhary said.

He also wants customers to feel comfortable offering feedback. He regularly visits tables to ask customers what they like and what could be improved.

“I want to build an honest relationship with the community so I can keep improving,” he said.

That relationship has helped Chaudhary develop an appreciation for Brownsburg. Living in Whitestown, he said he wants to eventually move closer to the restaurant.

“I like Brownsburg,” he said. “It is quiet and peaceful, which is what I like.”

The current location is only the beginning. Chaudhary said he wants to eventually open a standalone Spice Club with a patio, bar and expanded dining experience.

Ultimately, he envisions something even bigger: A restaurant that could become a franchise.

“For now, we’re going to try to make this as good as possible,” Chaudhary said.

Animal shelter partially closes amid parvo case

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com The Hendricks County Animal Shelter temporarily closed to the public, halted intakes and paused adoptions after dogs rescued from a Danville hoarding case tested positive for canine parvovirus.

The shelter announced the closure Aug. 13, saying the decision was made to protect animals already in its care and prevent the highly contagious virus from spreading.

On Aug. 19, the shelter reopened for limited operations, including the acceptance of cat and kitten owner surrenders and strays. Visitors are also welcome to visit and adopt available animals. However, dog intakes remain paused.

Christy Roberts, director of the Hendricks County Animal Shelter, said the case remains under investigation and she could provide only limited details.

Roberts said 11 dogs have been confirmed as belonging to the Danville homeowner, who identified the animals as his. Some of those dogs have tested positive for parvo, while others have not.

“Not every single dog has tested positive, but because the dogs have never been vaccinated, that is why we have been advised to move forward as if all dogs are positive for parvo,” Roberts said.

Two additional dogs were brought in after being found in the area and appear to match the animals from the residence, Roberts said. However, the homeowner has not identified those dogs as his.

Danville police and animal control responded to a residence on N. Cross Street Aug. 12 after multiple dogs re-

portedly escaped through a hole in the side of the home that had been covered with a tarp. More than a dozen dogs were reportedly recovered, with officers and animal control continuing to search for others.

James Wesley, 52, of N. Cross Street, was arrested and faces a preliminary Level 6 felony charge of animal neglect involving more than 10 dogs.

Roberts said dogs that were already housed at the shelter are not showing signs of parvo and are vaccinated against the virus.

“None of the dogs that were previously at the shelter are showing any signs,” Roberts said. “All of the dogs that are currently at the shelter are fully vaccinated against the parvo virus.”

The shelter is using quarantine procedures and intensive cleaning to reduce the risk of transmission. Roberts said the facility has four quarantine runs and is operating with limited space while construction is underway.

“We’re making it work right now,” she said. “And again, we’re not seeing anything extreme here.”

Roberts said the shelter received substantial community support, including donations of bleach, gloves, cleaning supplies, treats and other items.

“We’ve received a ton of help from the community,” Roberts said. “We’re probably in great shape right now as far as donations are concerned.”

The shelter is asking residents with pets to keep their animals current on vaccinations and follow their veterinarians’ recommendations. The shelter will announce on social media when it is safe to fully reopen.

A proposed 272-unit apartment community north of the Meijer on 56th Street remains a point of contention in Brownsburg, with town council members questioning whether the development would provide enough money toward future roadway improvements.

The council tabled three related items involving the CRG project during its Aug. 13 meeting and scheduled a special meeting to continue the discussion.

The meeting agenda identified the project as The Enclave on Parkway and calls for the approximately 30-acre site along C.R. 900 East to be rezoned from agriculture residential to planned development.

The proposed development includes 272 apartments and about 5,400 square feet of commercial space. The property is north of the Meijer near 56th Street and C.R. 900 East.

The town’s planning staff said the site’s location and surrounding development make a planned development with multifamily and commercial uses appropriate for consideration. The Advisory Plan Commission, however, had recommended against the rezoning.

Council member Glenn Adams, whose Ward 2 includes the proposed development, said his primary concern was traffic.

with one way in or one way out,” Adams said during the meeting.

The developer had agreed to contribute $133 per apartment toward future roadway improvements, totaling $36,176 for the proposed 272 units.

Council members questioned whether that amount would be adequate given the traffic conditions in the area.

Adams said the proposed contribution was too small compared with the potential cost of improvements at the nearby intersection.

CRG representative Ben Comer said the developer was willing to discuss a larger contribution but indicated that negotiations would be better handled outside the public meeting.

The council ultimately tabled the rezoning, annexation and related fiscal-plan items for further discussion.

Council discuss wheel tax

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com The Brownsburg Town Council advanced a proposal Aug. 13 to establish a municipal wheel tax and vehicle excise surtax, but council members want more information before deciding whether the proposed $25 wheel tax is the right amount.

Council approved the first reading of Ordinance 2026-14, which would establish a $25 municipal wheel tax and a $25 vehicle excise surtax beginning Jan. 1, 2027.

The proposal generated confusion during the meeting about whether the new taxes would be added to the existing Hendricks County taxes.

Scott Krapf, attorney for the town, repeatedly clarified that Brownsburg residents would not pay both the county and municipal taxes. Because Brownsburg does not have its own municipal wheel tax or vehicle excise surtax, the proposed municipal taxes would replace the county taxes for Brownsburg residents beginning in 2027.

Under the proposal, the amounts would remain $25 each, meaning the change is intended to be tax neutral for residents. The difference would be where the money goes: Revenue collected from Brownsburg residents would flow to the town rather than the county.

Council Member Travis Tschaenn questioned whether the town needed to impose the full $25 wheel tax to remain eligible for the funding and suggested the council investigate a lower rate.

“I’d like to see if we can figure out a way to lower that a little bit and provide a tax cut for some of our citizens,” Tschaenn said.

Council members ultimately approved the first reading rather than making a final decision on the tax rates.

Krapf explained that the ordinance could be amended during subsequent readings before final adoption.

The issue therefore remains open, with the council expected to further investigate the appropriate wheel tax amount while working within the state’s deadlines for a 2027 implementation.

Council approves 2027 changes

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com The Hendricks County Council approved six new county positions for 2027 and agreed to begin the binding budget review process for the Avon-Washington Township Public Library during its August meeting.

The library is seeking a 5 percent increase to its 2027 budget, which would provide about $59,000 more than its 2026 budget. Library representative Laurel Setser said the increase is needed largely because of rising building maintenance and repair costs.

Setser said the library spent about three times its 2026 budgeted amount on repairs and maintenance. The library also has been replacing equipment with more energy-efficient systems, including recently installed solar equipment.

Because Washington Township has more parcels than the Town of Avon, the county council remains the library’s fiscal authority. The council will conduct the library’s budget hearing in September and could adopt its 2027 budget in October.

The council also approved six 2027 personnel requests, including a new engineering specialist and a highway sign supervisor. County officials said the GIS position is needed to address staffing shortages and increasing demands associated with county growth.

The sign supervisor will oversee signs and traffic-control devices, including installation, replacement, maintenance and inventory. Officials said the position is expected to supervise at least one employee and will support the county’s effort to produce signs in-house.

Sheriff’s officials also told the council that the cost of additional body cameras approved for next year has increased by 2 percent and could rise further if the county waits until October to secure the equipment. The council reached a consensus to pursue funding in September so the sheriff’s office can lock in pricing.

The council also increased minimum fund-balance targets for the county’s general fund and motor vehicle highway fund, approving targets of $13.5 million and $2 million, respectively.

The reassessment fund target was set at $300,000.

Local IREAD scores continue to climb

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com Hendricks County-area schools continued to post strong results on Indiana’s annual reading assessment, as statewide third-grade proficiency increased for the fifth consecutive year.

More than 88 percent of Indiana third graders passed the 2026 Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination, or IREAD, assessment, an increase of nearly 1.5 percentage points from 2025. State officials said it was the second-largest year-over-year gain since the assessment began.

State Rep. Becky Cash, R-Zionsville, who serves on the House Education Committee, said the results reflect the state’s emphasis on early literacy.

“These results are a strong indication that Indiana’s focus on early literacy is making a meaningful difference in students’ lives,” Cash said. “We’re seeing more young Hoosiers build the reading skills they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.”

Local pass rates included 94 percent at Avon Community School Corp. and Brownsburg Community School Corp., 97 percent at Danville Community School Corp., 98 percent at Mill Creek Community School Corp., 99 percent at North West Hendricks Schools and 88 percent at Plainfield Community School Corp. Bethesda Christian School reported a 100 percent pass rate.

State Rep. Greg Steuerwald, R-Avon, said literacy rates have improved across student populations and now exceed pre-pandemic levels.

“It’s encouraging to see so many students reaching proficiency in their reading ability,” Steuerwald said. “Establishing this fundamental skill at a young age will lead to greater academic success and a brighter future for young Hoosiers.”

Cash, Steuerwald and other lawmakers supported 2023 legislation establishing science of reading standards and additional assistance for students struggling with literacy.

“The Hoosier students of today will become the community leaders of tomorrow, and literacy is a crucial first step in that journey,” said State Rep. Craig Haggard, R-Mooresville. “These scores show me that this foundation for excellence is being built across the state.”

State Rep. Jeff Thompson, R-Lizton, pointed to increased K-12 funding as another factor in the state’s literacy efforts.

“These IREAD scores are further proof that recent laws, state funding and the efforts of our teachers, administrators, parents and students are leading to a remarkable rebound in literacy and positioning Indiana as a leading state in education policy,” Thompson said.

Bulldogs defensive lineman keeps progressing

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Brownsburg High School senior defensive lineman Dami Sowunmi is always determined to get better.

“Dami has one of the best yearround work ethics I have ever had,” Bulldogs football coach John Hart said. “He is so dynamic off the ball he has the ability to affect an entire offense.”

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Sowunmi had 36 total tackles, including 10 for Sowunmi loss, five sacks and a fumble recovery to help the Bulldogs capture last season’s IHSAA Class 6A state championship. He had 13 tackles, including six for loss, and a sack as a sophomore.

“I would say that I definitely improved with my hands last season, being able to shed blocks faster and being better at closing space in my pass rush and I am looking to improve more in those areas this upcoming season,” Sowunmi said.

Sowunmi has one overarching goal for the season — win a third consecutive state title. The Bulldogs were scheduled to open the season Aug. 21 at Lawrence North.

“There are a few goals, personally, that I have set this season — having 10 or more sacks and getting 30-plus tackles,” he said. “But aside from that, going back to state and winning it all is the biggest goal for me and

the rest of the team. It’s been really special (what) the program has done to achieve the last two years, but the team is looking forward to making it back to state again, and that means that we have to take this season one game at a time. Just focusing during the moment and not looking (too far ahead) in the season.”

Sowunmi committed to the University of Missouri in late May. He chose Missouri over offers from Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Kansas State and Purdue University, among others.

“Some key factors in my decision were the players and how they hold each other accountable and how they build a connection, the plan that the coaching staff had for me,” he said.

He was particularly impressed with the plan defensive line coach Lavorn “Chap” Harbin developed for him. Sowunmi said having trust with the staff was the biggest factor in his decision.

“They loved how I was able to play at any position on the D-line and how fast I am off the line of scrimmage,” he said.

Sowunmi started playing football at age 9.

“What makes me passionate is the intensity and thrill playing under the lights and the challenge that the sport gives,” he said. “It pushes me to grow physically and mentally to overcome adversity which shows up in life, being able to grow and mature as a man.”

Jasmine Salinas has found a racing family — and a second home — in Brownsburg

Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com For Jasmine Salinas, Brownsburg was supposed to be a temporary residence.

Five years ago, the California native moved to Indiana during the COVID-19 pandemic, intending to give racing her full attention after balancing it with a job at a design firm in San Francisco.

Five years later, she and her family are buying their second home in Indiana.

“I was thinking I’ll come out to Indiana for a little bit and try it out, but it’s five years later and we’re buying our second home here,” Salinas said.

Now, Brownsburg is more than the place where Salinas lives. It is home to Scrappers Racing, the family-owned NHRA team she races for, and it has become a hub for the relationships that keep her career moving.

That connection will be especially meaningful when Salinas competes in the NHRA U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park Sept.

2-7. The event is the biggest race on the NHRA calendar and takes place just down the road from the team’s Brownsburg headquarters.

For Salinas, 34, it is an adopted home race.

“Every single year we have more friends and people in the community coming out that we’ve gotten to meet and work with,” she said. “Getting to race on a home track over on this side of the country is really special.”

Racing has been part of Salinas’ life since childhood.

Her father, Mike Salinas, is a ninetime NHRA Top Fuel event winner and owner and co-founder of Scrappers Racing. In 2023, he became the first driver in NHRA history to break the 300 mph mark in the eighth-mile, recording a 300.80 mph run at zMAX Dragway in North Carolina. His full pass reached 338 mph.

Jasmine began racing at 14 and eventually worked her way through the Lucas Oil Series before reaching Top Fuel.

She won the 2022 Division 3 Top Alcohol Dragster championship and earned

her Top Fuel license the following year.

In 2024, she made her Top Fuel debut.

But being Mike Salinas’ daughter is only part of her story.

Her sister, Jianna Evaristo-Salinas, competes in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle, while other members of the extended racing family work on teams throughout the sport.

“It’s such a family sport,” Salinas said. “My sister is out there racing. My dad’s the reason I got started.”

That family atmosphere extends beyond the Salinas name.

Salinas said one of the reasons she has embraced Indiana is the racing community itself. Many people who work in the sport relocate to the Indianapolis area because teams, manufac-

turers, vendors and other racing businesses are concentrated here.

The move has allowed Salinas to develop relationships that would have been difficult to build while living in California.

“I couldn’t build those relationships when I was in California,” she said. “So now I’m heavily in the community — like getting to just go down the street and talk to people who are building something for us on our race car that we run.”

That sense of community is particularly important heading into the U.S. Nationals.

Scrappers Racing has operated as a part-time team in recent seasons, putting it at a disadvantage against larger

teams with bigger budgets and more resources. Still, Salinas said the team has been able to challenge some of the sport’s biggest names.

“We’re definitely out there disrupting,” she said.

For the U.S. Nationals, Salinas’ immediate goal is straightforward: qualify well, make it through race day and continue proving what a smaller team can accomplish.

There is another goal, too.

After watching Shawn Langdon become the first driver to break the 340 mph barrier earlier this year, Salinas told her crew chief she wanted to chase that milestone herself.

Yet the numbers and trophies don’t tell the whole story of what brought Salinas to this point.

One of her proudest racing accomplishments came in 2022, when she won the Gainesville Nationals in Top Alcohol Dragster. Exactly one year earlier, at the same track, she had suffered a serious crash in which her car went over the wall and flipped multiple times.

The accident shook her confidence.

The victory a year later helped restore it.

“I wanted to prove to myself more than anybody that, you know, I was so much better and capable and had so much more to show others, and to not let that deter me or give up,” she said.

That experience continues to shape the way she approaches racing — and the advice she gives young women who want to follow a similar path.

Salinas earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and Mandarin and said she did not come into racing with an ex-

tensive mechanical background. What she did have was the determination to figure things out.

“You can’t be what you can’t see,” she said. “And if there’s nobody there doing it, then go out there and be the one that’s creating that path where if you don’t see somebody that looks like you, then go out there and do it.”

That message is fitting for someone who has spent 20 years building a career in a sport dominated by men while establishing roots in a community far from where she grew up.

Salinas still misses California — the beaches, scenery, food and culture, among other things. But Indiana has given her something she didn’t realize she was missing: a community built around a shared pursuit.

And when the U.S. Nationals arrive in Brownsburg’s backyard, Salinas won’t be coming in as a visitor.

She’ll be racing at home.

As Brownsburg students return to the classroom, Walmart is rolling back prices on numerous back-to-school items for families, even as demand for physical supplies shifts toward digital learning tools.

Walmart store manager Ryan Day said although physical supply needs remain high for elementary students, purchasing habits shift as students advance in grades.

“Maybe it’s because some of the stuff is more digital,” Day said. “You still need the basics, especially for the younger grades, but as they progress toward high school, they need fewer supplies.”

Despite the shift toward technology, area school districts emphasize that traditional classroom tools remain essential alongside digital platforms.

“Technology tools have been integral resources in our classrooms for well over a decade, but our priority has always been balance, not replacement,” said Marnie Cooke, executive director of marketing and communications for Noblesville Schools. “Digital tools exist alongside these traditional materials to give more options for learning and to ensure students build skills in all areas.”

Regardless of how much families need to buy, Day said the retailer focused heavily on price reductions to assist shoppers this season.

rollbacks this year versus last year,” Day said, noting that price reductions were targeted at key school items. “That’s been the big focus, to try to make it as affordable as we possibly can.”

In addition to retail pricing shifts, local Hendricks County, initiatives like the Brownsburg Education Foundation’s Fast Track program work alongside local community partners to provide classroom essentials to local students.

Actress juggles duties in ‘Ring of Fire’

Besides her acting role, Hund is the assistant director and associate director of music in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s presentation of the musical “Ring of Fire,” which runs Aug. 27 to Oct. 4 the Indianapolis venue.

“Beef & Boards has assembled a great team,” said Hund, whose character doesn’t have a name. “Jeff Stockberger is the director, Kristy Templet is the music director and Sally Mitchell is the choreographer. All of us have worked together in many different capacities over the years, and (I) can’t wait to see what we create together with this production. It’s going to be one heck of a collaboration.”

In 2024, Hund performed in Actors Theatre of Indiana’s “Ring of Fire,” which follows the story of Johnny Cash.

“No two productions of ‘Ring of Fire’ are the same, as the script and score leave a lot of room for interpretation,” she said. “In the 2024 ATI production, I was the only woman in the cast, so I played all the female roles in the show. In this Beef & Boards production, we have three women — hooray. I will be singing some of the same songs I did in the ATI version, but many of the arrangements will be different.”

Hund has performed in one other “Ring of Fire” production.

“Though I have ‘almost’ done it an additional four times,” Hund said.

“And I have performed in Johnny Cash tribute concerts, too. Audiences always go crazy for ‘Ring of Fire.’

Johnny Cash is such an iconic figure in American music and, wow, he wrote and performed so many great songs.”

This will be Hund’s 33rd show with Beef & Boards.

“I love working at the Beef,” she said. “The regulars who work there often truly are like a family. My first show there was ‘Smoke on the Moun-

tain’ in 2007, and that will always hold a place in my heart. Over the years, I’ve gotten to play many bucket-list roles, including The Witch in ‘Into the Woods,’ Fantine in ‘Les Miserables’ and Lina Lamont in ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ among others.”

Hund said she no longer lives in Indianapolis but spends a lot of time in the city.

“Over the years, I’ve made a lot of friends in Indy, so I always enjoy my time here,” she said.

Along with theater work, she plays fiddle for the Blue Eyed Bettys, a three-person band. She has played the violin since fifth grade.

“We haven’t performed a concert in over a year, sadly, because our schedules haven’t aligned,” she said. “But we do have a Patreon, where we post a new video every month for our subscribers. We hope to get back to tour-

ing and recording again soon.”

When she is in the Indianapolis area, she frequently fills in at Bach to Rock Music School in Carmel and Zionsville as manager, substitute teacher, band director and events site manager.

“I served as director of the Bach to Rock Zionsville location during the (COVID-19) pandemic, when performing jobs were scarce, so I am familiar with all aspects of running the schools,” she said. “This allows me to jump in wherever the need arises. I’m grateful to have maintained a close relationship with such a terrific music school and I love working with the kids.”

Famed saxophonist takes the stage

Amid the chaos of a St. Louis farmers market in the early 1970s, a legendary jazz career began when Todd Williams and fellow elementary school students ended a semester of saxophone lessons with a performance at the market.

Half a century later, Williams still remembers playing a solo during a song called “Hip Lamb” — a groovy version of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” — and how it began a string of people noticing his playing and encouraging him.

“I had reinforcement time and time again,” Williams said.

That encouragement eventually came from some of the biggest names in American jazz, including trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Williams has become a renowned performer, writer and instructor in his own right.

Williams, 59, later found his way to Indianapolis, and he’s bringing that lifetime of jazz experience to the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts’ Local Mix Music Series. The show, featuring Williams, Kenny Phelps on drums and Bethany Robinson on bass as the Todd Williams Trio, is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at The Tarkington in Carmel. Williams was barely old enough to drive when he found himself in an impromptu audition for Marsalis.

He and a friend attended a show and ended up going backstage to meet the band. Someone backstage recognized Williams as a star saxophonist and got Williams to play for Marsalis.

“I was just feeling like, ‘I can’t believe I’m playing in front of these guys,’” Williams said. “And I didn’t really play too well.”

Marsalis saw potential in him, though. He sent him 11 cassette tapes of saxophone solos for Williams to learn.

Williams did just that, and the next time he saw Marsalis, he played one of the solos. Marsalis was impressed with his work ethic, and when he needed someone to fill in for a while, Marsalis called Williams.

Williams toured with Marsalis in the late 1980s and early 1990s and was a featured artist for the Lincoln Center Jazz Band from 1989 to 2016. As a writer,

he has won four ASCAP Plus Awards for Composers.

He has transitioned to teaching as well, which eventually led him to Indiana Wesleyan, where he has been an assistant professor of Music Education since 2012. He said he and his family have loved living in the Midwest and that the music scene in Indianapolis has been impressive. He praised the number of musical groups in town as well as vibrant venues such as the Payne & Mencias Palladium in Carmel and the Jazz Kitchen in Broad Ripple.

“I always kind of boast a little bit on Indianapolis,” Williams said. “Most cities, they struggle to have an orchestra.

Just an orchestra, you know? And we have two orchestras, lots of venues and people who play jazz, people who do all sorts of things.”

Julia Shildmyer, director of Education & Community Engagement at Allied Solutions Center, said the venue is fortunate to have Williams nearby and willing to share his expertise.

“He has enriched our jazz and education offerings in so many ways, and I think we’ve provided some memorable opportunities for his students as well,” Shildmyer stated via email.

Williams said the Sept. 3 show will make even non-jazz aficionados sing along and snap their fingers.

“The idea is to keep it simple, keep it singable, and keep it fun, but at the same time, incorporate improvisations that are really satisfying to the person who’s a more experienced listener,” he said.

Jr. Civic lessons go beyond the stage

By Piper Bailey Piper@youarecurrent.com For more than 80 years, Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre’s Jr. Civic program has taught young performers more than acting, dancing or singing.

Its classes build confidence, discipline, teamwork and skills that students carry with them long after they leave the stage.

Students ages 4 to 14 can sign up for classes in the fall’s eight-week session running from September to November.

Classes give students opportunities to practice performing while learning the fundamentals of theater. Depending on their age and experience level, students may work on acting techniques, movement, musical theater and other skills designed to help them become more comfortable performing in front of others.

“You’re not only learning techniques about theater and musical theater,” Brent Marty, Civic’s director of music and education, said. “You’re learning life skills.”

Civic Education Programs Director Holly Stults said she has seen families return to Civic with their children and grandchildren, seeing firsthand how

lessons learned from theater can follow students into adulthood.

“We’re not just trying to turn out Broadway stars but human beings who can really approach the world in a creative, exciting way and think outside the box,” Stults said.

Stults and Marty said students develop confidence, discipline and teamwork while learning how to handle rejection. Stults said “learning how to deal with no in a positive way” can prepare students for future auditions, job interviews and other challenges.

Classes start at $200, and need-based scholarship opportunities are available for students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch or textbook assistance programs.

Recycling a very trashy topic they just emptied it, even though it was already empty.

Then I put a note on it that said: THIS IS TRASH! I felt really stupid telling an experienced sanitation worker what trash is.

Then my wife Mary Ellen called the company that handles pickups, but they apparently had a hard time deciding who would assist us: The trash guys or the recycling guys? This is a very competitive profession (lots of trash talk), but they promised they were working on a solution. We finally got a call saying the service would come by and either replace the wheel or give us a brand-new bin.

They did both.

So now we have four bins, but we only have room in our garage for three. The extra bin is on our lawn.

It’s kind of an eyesore. It’s been there several weeks.

We are back to square one. Talk about a vicious re-cycle.

I know. I’ll put out a “for sale” sign on the bin with a price of $200 and stick it in the driveway.

No one will pay that, of course. But if we get lucky tonight, maybe someone will steal it.

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie The two of us have maintained a close association for many years, but I am sad to report that things have gotten a little bumpy. Our weekly trip to the curb has become hard to manage. The wheels have come off our relationship. Here’s the story.

A few weeks ago, we discovered that one of our trash receptacles was missing one of its two wheels.

Apparently, in the process of disposing of our garbage, the sanitation truck that hoists our discarded refuse each week had shaken loose this essential feature of the unit. Our bin now lacked front-wheel drive I am very good to my bins. I even have them professionally scrubbed. I think they enjoy the process.

It does look like more fun than a massage. We actually have three bins. The two yellow ones are for recycling, and the one in question is blue.
