ZIONSVILLE GOLF COURSE A Welcoming Destination for All Located in the heart of town, Zionsville Golf Course (ZGC) has provided a peaceful sanctuary and welcome connection to nature during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Town-owned course offers five sets of tees – appealing to all golfers from junior to experienced – as well as leveling play with undulating greens and recently added fescue. ZGC offers affordable golf at an enjoyable pace where most complete nine holes in under two hours.

There have been several recent additions to the golf course. The implementation of a new online system allows golfers to book tee times and electronic payments support social distancing practices. The addition of tall fescue defines several holes and captures rainwater while also helping manage overall operating costs.

Since opening in 1968, ZGC has offered leagues to promote play throughout the community. Currently, ZGC offers four weekly leagues. In the spring and fall, the Zionsville Middle School and Zionsville West Middle School boys and girls golf teams call the course home. ZGC has offered junior golfers a foundation for success: the Zionsville Community High School boys and girls golf teams have captured a total of three State Championships. Pending COVID-19 restrictions, ZGC plans to coordinate the Zionsville Junior Golf League beginning in late August through early October and host a new Zionsville Open on October 3 – 4.

During the COVID-19 pandemic more people have sought calming activities that lend well to social distancing. One season pass holder, Staff Sergeant Jeremy Turley of the Urban Augmentation Medical Task Force 801-03, served as a 68 X Behavioral Health Tech and was deployed to New York City, the epicenter of the pandemic. He faced challenging times helping support work on the frontline. Upon his return home, golf was one way to contend with stress.

“Coming home from a deployment can be challenging in many different aspects,” Turley said.

“Having just returned from NYC, I was looking to enjoy time outdoors. The golf course staff helped tremendously with my transition coming home. They were very welcoming and friendly. Their hospitality is greatly appreciated.”

A variety of safety measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of golfers. Golfers maintain social distancing with increased (15 minute) intervals between tee times. Through a donation from the Senior Men’s League, E-Z Lyft levers have been added to remove golf balls from holes. The E-Z Lyft allows golfers to hole putts and then use a putter to lift a handle attached to the flag to remove balls and

avoid touching pins. After each round, golf carts are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. In the golf shop, a shield protects both golfers and staff. The use of credit cards is highly recommended, and six feet of social distancing is practiced.

Message to the Community from Mayor Emily Styron We are 30 weeks into 2020. And despite the unexpected challenges in our community, projects and priorities are moving forward. The impact of COVID-19 has touched every one of us. Although we are still prioritizing public health over other community needs, we are not losing sight of what we want for the future.

After removing the barriers limiting corporate investment in Creekside Corporate Park, a state-of-the-art corporate headquarters will break ground this fall. Even through this challenging economic environment, the Redevelopment Commission is working with multiple companies interested in relocating to Zionsville. Over the next few weeks, fundamental changes are coming to the Village business district.

On July 28th the PNC bank building and the lock shop building were removed.

We are clearing these parcels owned by the Town in preparation for an exciting redevelopment project. This community-driven process will invite residents, business owners, property owners, community leaders, and other stakeholders to a facilitated process to create a development plan for the “gateway” to our Town.

We are excited for you to participate in how we transform this area. Finally, thank you to the hundreds of residents who have come out this summer in solidarity advocating for greater social justice in our community, state, and country. Soon we will launch Zionsville’s Community Conversations project centered around diversity, inclusion, breaking down biases and building more community capacity to dismantle racial inequalities. Zionsville’s Climate Action Plan ecological resiliency is critical to meeting the local challenges climate change brings to the Midwest,” said Mayor Emily Styron. “I am proud of the contribution our team has provided to this initiative.

Next steps for Zionsville include establishing an Environmental Sustainability Commission and creating an action plan to minimize impacts of climate change and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Part of this action plan involves incorporating public input by engaging residents and community stakeholders. Details regarding virtual public meetings, educational webinars and surveys will be available online at www.zionsville-in.gov/ climateactionplan.

Earlier this year, as one of 11 communities selected to be part of Indiana University’s second Resilience Cohort, the Town of Zionsville conducted a comprehensive inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This inventory was the first step in the climate action planning process.

With the inventory complete, the Town of Zionsville will spend the rest of 2020 developing a climate action plan to increase sustainability efforts and reduce GHG

emissions. A climate action plan is a fundamental step for Indiana cities and towns committed to protecting their communities from heavier rainfalls in spring and winter, more river and flash floods and more freezethaw events that lead to potholes, among other impacts. The finished plan will provide the Town of Zionsville with a strategy for reducing GHG emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change.

In the Know North-South Connector As part of the North-South Connector project, the intersection of Whitestown Road and CR 875 East is closed to traffic through Sept. 14, weather dependent. This extended closure date is due to delays caused by utility companies. This project involves a new roadway segment that will connect the intersection of CR 850 East/Cooper Road with CR 875 East to the north. The design includes a roundabout at the intersection of CR 850 East/Cooper Road and Oak Street and a roundabout at the intersection of CR 875 East and Whitestown Road There are no planned closures of Oak Street for the south roundabout at CR 850 East/Cooper Road and Oak Street. This roundabout is planned to be constructed while maintaining east-west traffic on Oak Street. However, CR 850 East/Cooper Road will close periodically south of Oak Street during certain phases of construction.

CR 400 South Widening, Repair and Resurfacing Utility relocation will not be complete until the end of September. As this work is expected to take six weeks, actual road reconstruction is likely delayed until the spring of 2021. If favorable weather is experienced in November and December, this work could still occur this year. This project involves the widening, repair and resurfacing of CR 400 South.

Sycamore Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project This Boone County Highway Department project is currently on-time.

This project involves the reconstruction of the road bridge deck and bridge railing systems and provides new decorative lighting on the rehabilitated bridge. The road is scheduled to be open to through traffic on Aug. 28, 2020.

MEET THE MERCHANT Q&A with Owner Mark Nigbur Alchemy Spirit House

How did you get your start in the distillery industry?

I got started in Colorado Springs, Colorado in the early 2000s. I have a chemistry and science background and I thought I could make a better vodka than what was available. At the time craft distilling and micro distilling were just getting started. I designed a still made out of 100% glass – Boroscilicate glass, a science or lab glass. This distills the purest pharmaceutical grade ethanol or alcohol. Purity was the most important thing to me, not quantity. I created Altius Vodka and that’s what got me started.

How did you expand from your first vodka?

Two brothers saw a blog post about my product.

We formed a partnership and I moved to Maui in 2006. I opened a distillery in Maui and we rocked it.

We went from 50 cases/month to almost 100,000 cases/year when I left.

From Maui, what led you to Zionsville?

I fell in love with a woman from Indiana, Laurie, and now she’s my wife and we have a 17-month-old son Harrison. We were traveling back and forth to Indiana monthly to visit Laurie’s family and I said I want to open a distillery but I don’t know where. I Googled, “What’s the best school district in Indiana?” and Zionsville popped up. We flew in, looked at this building, met the building owner and they said we would love to have you here. I started building this out in October 2019 and here we are. I believe in the universe and when the universe nudges you, you go with it. My mantra is: just say yes. I knew I was in the right place doing the right thing.

What type of spirits will you offer at Alchemy Spirit House?

We are offering four kinds of vodka. Our No. 1 is Industry Straight. Our No. 2 is Citron Vodka. The

citron we use is from real lemons and it’s made with botanicals and fresh fruit. Our No. 3 is Elderflower Vodka, which is magenta in color and has 11 – 14 botanicals. Our No. 8 is Oaked Vodka. We age it in French oak and it makes the best Old Fashioned I’ve ever had. We have two kinds of rum: a botanical rum, which makes the best Rum and Coke in the world, and an aged rum, which will be ready in January or February. We’re also doing an Anejo Agave Spirit and a Blanco Agave Spirit, a fancy term for tequila. I drink it on the rocks.

For those who have never been to a tasting room, what can guests expect?

I want to bring back all those cocktails from the 90s, 2000s and Prohibition times. Yes, we will have a Cosmopolitan but it will be like no other Cosmopolitan you’ve had. This will be a true tasting room. To have a true tasting room, you must have a distillery inside of it. We ferment, we distill, we

bottle and we mix cocktails all in the same building.

Overley-Worman Park Virtual Open House Zionsville residents interested in learning more about the future Overley-Worman Park have a new resource. The Zionsville Board of Park and Recreation launched a website designed to share the progress and plans of the future Overley-Worman Park. The website also offers the option to participate in a virtual open house.

Overley-Worman Park, to be constructed in 2021, will be located on land adjacent to Eagle Creek across from Starkey Nature Park and behind the new Vonterra subdivision off Zionsville Road. The park will also be connected to the Big-4 Rail Trail.

In the spring of 2017, the Town of Zionsville, through the Zionsville Board of Park and Recreation, completed the master plan process for OverleyWorman Park. The master plan process included an intensive three-day workshop and open design workshops with the public and stakeholders.

Through these design meetings, it was determined that when complete, Overley-Worman Park will feature:

Now, the Zionsville Board of Park and Recreation invites the public to participate in a virtual open house through the new website. Users can also submit comments or questions via a comment form.

Zionsville Police Department Field Roll Calls

Tox Drop Collection Every year, the Boone County Solid Waste Management District (BCSWMD) hosts two tox-away collection events for the recycling and proper disposal of household hazardous waste and electronics. The Fall Tox Drop Collection takes place Saturday, Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Zionsville Municipal Services Building (1075 Parkway Drive).

This collection is an opportunity for Boone County residents to safely dispose of hazardous waste. Examples of acceptable items include, but are not limited to: vehicle fluids, small propane tanks, cleaners, insecticides, adhesives, fire extinguishers, light bulbs, oil-based paint, aerosols, pool chemicals, mercury containing items (thermometers, automobile batteries, rechargeable batteries) and more.

Zionsville Police Department Field Roll Call outside of Pleasant View Elementary The Zionsville Police Department (ZPD) has been conducting “field roll calls” around town.

Field roll calls are held at the beginning of an officer’s daily shift. The purpose of these roll calls is to relay information from one shift to another. Field roll calls are conducted in housing additions, businesses, parks, schools, community pools and other places throughout the community.

Field roll calls give the officers a chance to get out into the community and speak to the residents. Whether it is a question, small conversation, encouragement or just a greeting, ZPD encourages the community to approach our police officers. This is a great opportunity for the citizens and officers to interact amongst each other.

(BCSSI) have stayed connected with our older adults and family members throughout the pandemic. In March, we supported 182 individuals, in April we supported 234 individuals, in May we supported 172 sindividuals and in June we supported 161 in a multitude of ways. One way we have connected is through making personal calls.
