Town council considers gas station setback

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com A proposed change to Zionsville’s zoning code would require gas stations be built at least 500 feet away from the nearest school, residential building and day care facility. It would be the first language to specifically require such a regulation for gas stations.

The Zionsville Town Council introduced the proposal at its Aug. 3 meeting and was expected to revisit it, and possibly vote on the setback requirements, Aug. 17.

Town Council Vice President Brad Burk, who authored the proposal, said the board is still working on specifics of the zoning update, including where does the setback start from, such as from the gas station property line, canopy over the pumps or the pumps themselves. He said the council is considering the distance starting at the vents for the pumps.

“There are nuances we are trying to nail down,” Burk said.

The proposal comes after a contraversial gas station in Holliday Farms moved forward following approval from the Zionsville Plan Commission July 20. The gas station was widely opposed by Holliday Farms residents who submitted over 400 pages of opposition to the town government; however, since the project was already an approved use and met development standards, the plan commission approved it, which is required by law. Plan commission members admitted their hands were tied, even though some did not

agree with the project.

The Zionsville Healthy Neighborhood Alliance, a grassroots group of town residents, mostly in and around Holliday Farms that opposed the gas station, has been active in supporting the setback regulation.

“If the setback was already in place, a gas station couldn’t be approved (in Holliday Farms),” said Kory Guyer, one of the founding members of the neighborhood group.

The neighborhood alliance argued the gas station at Holliday Farms, which will be at 3805 Marketplace Dr., could pollute a nearby retention pond that is used to irrigate The Club at Holliday Farms as well as negatively impact Eagle Creek. If approved, the setback would only apply to future gas stations.

Guyer said Zionsville is the only major municipality near Indianapolis without a setback requirement specifically for gas stations.

Burk credited Guyer and town residents for being active in local government.

“I think everybody realized there is a gap in our code,” he said. “I think this is an example of how government can work well, and citizens are engaged and bring about policy change.”

Town Council President Jason Plunkett said he wants town staff and council members to show the same initiative. During the Aug. 3 meeting, he called for town staff and the council to identify two priorities they’d like to see changed in town code or ordinances based on what they hear from the community.

“I think we’re in a position where we are finding ourselves reactive (rather than proactive),” Plunkett said.

Plunkett said there is a sense in the community that people are not being heard by the town’s government. He said it’s time to go through town code and ordinances and determine what needs updated based on how the town’s changed, such as density requirements for residential zonings.

“We’ve heard from parts all around town there is significant stress from all the number of homes that have been approved,” Plunkett said.

If the town council approves the gas station setback requirement, it will go to the plan commission for consideration. The commission would give a recommendation, and then it would go back to the council for a final vote. Burk said the council seems supportive.

Guyer said the neighborhood alliance is still exploring how it can fight back against the now-approved gas station in their backyard. He also is advocating for a statewide setback requirement for gas stations.

“We’re trying to do this for everyone,” he said.

State Rep. Becky Cash (R-Zionsville) said she’s spoken with Guyer on a potential statewide requirement and is open to the discussion but said she still prefers local communities craft their own zoning code. She also said she supports the efforts in Zionsville.

“I am very concerned of the safety ramifications of having a fuel center that literally borders a retention pond,” she said.

Arrest made in fire case news@youarecurrent.com Authorities have made an arrest in the July 10 fire in downtown Zionsville, and the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office wants the suspect tried as an adult.

The prosecutor’s office announced Aug. 10 it will file a juvenile delinquency petition in relation to a 17-year-old who is suspected of starting the fire that burned the former Kogan Antiques and Lighting Store at 195 S. Main St. The prosecutor’s office said in a statement the alleged act of delinquency would constitute a felony if it was committed by an adult.

If the petition is granted, the teenager, who has since turned 18, would be tried in adult court. A hearing is expected at a later date.

The prosecutor’s office worked with the Zionsville Police Department on the case.

“I commend our detectives, particularly lead detective Nic Ruby, and our fire investigators for their thorough work throughout this investigation,” Mayor John Stehr stated.

intentionally set and originated with the lighting of an Israeli flag on the south side of the building. The mayor denounced the alleged act. The allegation also drew a statement from former Indiana Gov. and Vice President Mike Pence who called it “absolutely despicable.”

The local Jewish community held a rally in solidarity two days after the fire.

The property was the subject of a years-long property dispute between friends and family of former owner Drew Kogan. A settlement was reached last year.

Call prompts short lockdown at ZCHS

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Community Schools was briefly on a perimeter lockdown during the morning of Aug. 6 after the Zionsville Police Department received a threatening call pertaining to Zionsville Community High School.

The threat was determined to be not credible after police searched the ZCHS campus. Indiana State Police and K-9 officers helped with the search.

High school students remained in class during the perimeter lockdown, according to a message sent to families.

The school day continued normally at ZCS elementary and middle schools.

A passerby posted on Nextdoor a presence of emergency vehicles at the high school at approximately 10 a.m. with the entrance off Bloor Lane blocked.

Families received three updates from ZCS over the course of 30 minutes, with the third message stating nothing unusual was found.

High school students were allowed to use their cellphones to communicate with parents once the school day resumed. A new state law prohibits students from using their cellphones during the school day; however, there are exceptions, including for emergencies.

“The third day of school is not a day where regular routines are fully established, but our students and staff responded very well,” Superintendent Rebecca Coffman stated in a message to families. “Teaching and learning continued as normal inside our middle and elementary schools, and high school students remained in class and received regular updates via the PA from school leaders.”

Police are investigating the source of the call, according to Alexa Lingg, communications manager for the Town of Zionsville. Information is limited and police are following up on leads.

Court orders Apple to give phone access

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com A Boone County judge has ordered technology company Apple to give former NBA player Josh McRoberts access to his deceased grandmother’s phone in a property dispute case.

The July 29 order

by Superior Court I judge Matthew Kincaid directs Apple to give McRoberts full access to Sampson Carolyn Pennington’s account.

Pennington, 86, died May 6. Her property at 6810 Ford Rd. and belongings are at the center of a series of lawsuits between McRoberts, his mother Jennifer McRoberts and Zionsville Town Councilor Sarah Sampson and her husband Jon. The McRoberts family accused the Sampsons of taking advantage of Pennington and coercing her to sign over her property to them days before she died. The Sampsons and Pennington were neighbors.

McRoberts, 39, was a standout basketball player at Carmel High School and Duke University who spent 11 seasons in the NBA, including three with the Indiana Pacers.

A preliminary injunction was granted in June giving Josh McRoberts ownership of his grandmother’s property.

Kincaid ruled a 2025 revocable trust signed by Pennington making McRoberts the trustee of her estate overruled the documents Pennington signed granting the Sampsons ownership. The judge stated the latter documents were not valid because Pennington was not sound of mind and the Sampsons took advantage of her.

That order included all of Pennington’s belongings; however, the Sampsons argued for her phone to be forensically examined. Text messages included in court filings allegedly show a strained relationship between Pennington and her family.

withholding the phone. The phone’s password was allegedly changed when McRoberts finally gained possession of it, which prompted the request to have Apple grant access.

“When ultimately delivering the phone, the password had been changed so it was dead on arrival,” Shirley stated. “Instead of sharing the password so the Personal Representative could gain access to estate property, the Sampsons instead filed a motion regarding disclosure of the passcode, which is, shocker, another delay tactic.”

Kincaid struck down a motion from the Sampsons that asked the court to rescind the order.

Shirley argued since the Sampsons were able to include text messages from Pennington in court filings, they had access to the phone and could have changed the password and sent the texts themselves.

The cases are ongoing and a number of motions are under consideration.

Further, the McRoberts family accused Zionsville attorney Michael Einterz of legal malpractice and drafting the documents Pennington signed for the Sampsons. The court ruled Einterz must produce all documents related to representing Pennington.

The attorney filed a motion to dismiss the case.

Taft, the law firm representing the Sampsons, declined to comment. Shirley did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Swim club plans fundraiser

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Supporters of Azionaqua Swim Club will launch a capital project campaign for its pool later this month with the goal of raising $250,000 over the next three years.

Donations will cover a loan for the replacement of the pool liner and concrete work planned this fall. Azionaqua was built in 1960. Board President of the Azionaqua Swim Club and Olympic medalist Elaine Penrose said the liner and the concrete shell beneath the liner are past their life expectancy.

The liner, which is about 12 years old, has some leaks that are hard to find and not able to be repaired.

Concrete is only supposed to last 40 years. It has lasted well past 60 years.

Sections of it will be replaced before the new vinyl liner is put down.

“We have exceeded the life expectancy, and that’s due to the meticulousness of previous pool managers,” Penrose said.

Azionaqua is the only Olympic-sized swimming pool in Boone County.

“It’s a huge advantage for competitive swimmers in their training,” Penrose said.

The pool is private — it has about 2,000 members — but can be rented out and also hosts learn-to-swim and

drowning prevention classes open to the entire community. Penrose said it serves as both a private and public pool.

“There just aren’t enough community pools,” she said.

Azionaqua will have its Summer Soiree, an adult-fundraiser starting at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at 4875 Willow Road.

The pool is partnering with the newly formed Friends of Zionsville Swimming on the 21-years-and-older event which will feature a DJ, dinner and drinks. Tickets can be purchased at tinyurl.com/332mrjya. They also can be purchased at the door the night of the event.

The event will officially kick off the fundraising campaign for the pool; however, more than $50,000 has already been donated or pledged.

“We’ve been pleasantly surprised with the community support,” said board member Scott Eckart.

Eckart said the swim club wants to host more fundraisers in the future, if the current one is successful. Other projects eyed for the pool is bringing the facility into ADA compliance and upgrading the bathhouse, which is original. Eckart said the group would rather raise funds through events then raise prices on members.

Ways to expand the community resource aspect of the pool also is being considered.

Stehr seeks another term Zionsville Mayor John Stehr announced in a video Aug. 11 his intention to seek a second term.

Stehr, a retired broadcast journalist, was elected in 2023 after running unopposed in the general election. His term ends at the end of 2027.

Stehr “I asked for your trust because I thought Zionsville deserved a clear vision for the future,” Stehr said in his announcement. “Together, we have delivered on that vision.”

Stehr said he’s happy with the progress the town has made in improving its finances, particularly with a strong fiveyear plan, even with the expected challenges of state property tax legislation, and an improved bond rating which gets the town better interest rates.

“We’ve put some good foundations in place, and in another four years we can move a lot of things forward,” he said.

Stehr said prior to his election, town financial information was not communicated timely or transparently.

“We have left the past behind us,” he said.

Stehr said he’s also worked on changing the narrative at Town Hall with better communication between the mayor and town council and between the town and its constituents.

“Those things were needed badly,” he said.

In the announcement video, Stehr said, “This is not the finish line,” and strengthening the local economy, investing in infrastructure and protecting the “unique character” of Zionsville will be important moving forward.

National Night Out builds community connections

By Piper Bailey piper@youarecurrent.com Boone County’s Aug. 4 National Night Out event was more than a collaboration between law enforcement agencies.

It was an opportunity for community members to build relationships with their local departments.

Josh Samuelson, Zionsville Police Department’s operations division captain, said National Night Out allows officers to interact with residents outside stressful situations.

“A lot of times, whenever we interact with the public, it’s usually during a stressful time or during a call for service, so this gives us an opportunity to just relax, have a conversation with people,” Samuelson said. “We can show some of the tools that we use. We can answer questions. You know, just kind of increase understanding about our work.”

The collaboration was between the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, Whitestown Police Department, ZPD and Lebanon Police Department. Other local agencies, such as the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office, Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center, Boone County Special Response Team, Boone County EMS and the Whitestown Fire Department, had booths, handouts and demonstrations as well.

“We have our vehicles, we have drones, we have our equipment, so that they can see what taxpayer dollars are going to,” said John Jurkash, WPD’s public information officer and captain of administration. “They can see how we’re serving the community with all of our resources that we have.”

Night Out also served as a recruiting event, according to Mike Beard, chief deputy of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. From communications to corrections to law enforcement, there were numerous opportunities for attendees to ask questions and learn more about careers in public safety.

For LPD patrol officer Robby Viergutz, the event also was about helping residents feel more comfortable around officers.

“We don’t want people to be scared of the police,” he said. “We’re there to help protect, so we want them to see us in a sort of light where it’s just some-

Grissom Air Show set for Aug. 29-30

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Those who attend and enjoy the Grissom Air & Space Expo later this month can thank a Zionsville resident.

Maj. Joni Friar, who serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, is the air show director for the Aug. 29-30 event at Grissom Air Reserve Base near Peru and Bunker Hill.

Friar, who lives in Zionsville, has been on orders for the last three years with the Air Force, serving as the wing executive officer at Grissom. She added the title of air show director in December 2025 because of her experience with aviation. When she was in the Air Force, she was a drone pilot, operating the RQ-4 Global Hawk, a high-altitude surveillance aircraft.

As air show director, Friar is in charge of coordinating and scheduling the event and working with the base’s many partners to ensure the experience is enjoyable for spectators. And perhaps more importantly, making sure there are enough restroom facilities, she joked. A previous air show at Grissom did not have enough.

The Thunderbirds, an Air Force demonstration unit, are the highlight of the show. They are known for their flight formations and solos.

“If you’ve never seen the Thunderbirds, (they) are unmatched,” Friar said. “Everytime I’ve (seen them), ‘I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is amazing.’”

The Thunderbirds will perform at 4 p.m. both days.

Grissom AFB applied for an air show in 2024. It was awarded the Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s premier demo

team.

“We really hit the lottery with them,” Friar said.

Admission and parking are free.

There will be food vendors and kids activities. Roots in Blue, a music group with the Air Force’s Band of Mid-America, will perform.

On display will be a variety of aircraft, including the KC-135 Stratotanker — Grissom is known for the 434th Air Refueling Wing — along with one of the only B-29s that still fly and a C-5 Super Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the Air Force.

“Aviation enthusiasts are going to love this if they’re in the Indy area,” Friar said.

Friar was working at a law firm immediately after college when she thought about what she wanted to do with her life. A friend recommended enlisting in the Air Force. She had her sights set on being a pilot but was 0.2 inches too short, so she became a drone pilot instead.

“I’m very lucky in my path,” Friar said.

Friar’s on-orders time will conclude later this fall. She’ll then go back to being “Civilian Joni” and her regular job with Northrop Grumman — training NATO pilots on the RQ-4 drone. She’ll spend two months in Sicily, her seventh trip doing so.

A free community event, including a meet-and-greet with Thunderbirds crews, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Grissom Air Museum.

“I just want people to show up to this thing,” Friar said.

Crum’s initial response to DCS did not contain the information sought, according to a county statement. That’s when she requested HR provide a list of all enrolled employees. Crum sent the list, containing personal information for 290 employees, to DCS without reviewing it first.

The list was then forwarded by DCS to four county employees and two county vendors three weeks later. It is still not known why it was disseminated.

DCS said in a July statement the agency was following state and federal protocols, identifying who the list was shared with, recalling the emails that Garage Garage Cabinets Cabinets Garage Cabinets included the information, contacting third parties to delete the information and reporting the incident to the Indiana Office of the Attorney General.

The county stated it is implementing more safeguards to internal procedures and providing employees with credit monitoring and identity protection services.

Nonprofit flies patients

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com The nonprofit Lifeline Pilots is ensuring distance never stands between a patient and medical treatment.

LifeLine Pilots is an organization that offers free flights for passengers with medical or humanitarian needs far from home. It was created by pilot Wanda Whitsitt in 1981.

LifeLine Pilots Communications and Public Relations Manager Andrea Pietrowsky said what started as Whitsitt volunteering her time to transport blood to hospitals from the Red Cross has transitioned to transporting patients undergoing things like cancer treatments to their long distance medical appointments.

“We’ve never flown more patients than we do today,” Pietrowsky said.

“The key point of distinction is that these aren’t emergency flights; these aren’t air ambulances. What was done 45 years ago is the same as today — flying people to their appointments that they would otherwise struggle to access, or maybe not even be able to access at all.”

Flights are typically facilitated in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin. In Indiana, many flights take off at Indy Executive Airport, a Zionsville-based airport owned by the Hamilton County Airport Authority, and Indy Metro Airport in Fishers.

Jennifer Hatcher, a Noblesville resident and development manager for LifeLine Pilots, said although Hamilton County is viewed as affluent, many people struggle to get to and from medical appointments.

“I think there’s a misconception that people here don’t need help,” Hatcher said. “But there is a need here. We want to be able to reach the people who need us and who can use our services.

Our goal is to increase word here and also maybe get any pilots on board to volunteer since we do have a large pilot community here being so close to the Indy Executive Airport and Indy Metro Airport.”

Locally, Hatcher works within the community to spread the word about LifeLine Pilots to community organizations like the Noblesville Rotary Club and at community events.

“The mission really spoke to me, and

I’ve been trying to do grassroots outreach here to get the word out,” Hatcher said. “I’ve been fortunate to see one of the flights out of Indy Metro, and it’s just really rewarding.”

Last year, LifeLine Pilots flew nearly 1,300 flights at no cost to patients. The one qualification is passengers must have a physician treating them who can verify the need and that they are safe to fly.

“There’s no requirement of age or condition,” Pietrowsky said. “It’s simply if someone can show they have a case and need assistance. There’s no strict income threshold. It’s just that if you would need to fly weekly or monthly, and that shows some sort of challenge. If there’s a barrier of distance, or if you physically struggle to ride for hours in a car.”

A database system shared with other charitable public aviation groups is used to identify patients in need.

Approximately 300 pilots volunteer their time, planes and fuel. Locally, Bernie Hirsch, a Carmel resident, has been flying planes for LifeLine Pilots since 1998.

Hirsch said every flight is interesting and fulfilling.

“I’ve been a pilot for over 40 years, and my philosophy about that is I’m going to fly around anyway, so I might as well do something useful with that and something that impacts the lives of other people in a positive way,” she said.

“I think it’s important that people who have specialized skills use them in a way to help other people, and that’s primarily what I’ve been doing for decades with LifeLine Pilots.”

ESPN reported Aug. 5 that league CEO Scott O’Neil didn’t identify the investor or how much money will be injected into the league, but said terms should be finalized soon, with the transaction to be closed in September.

O’Neill stated that there is interest from additional parties to serve as minority investors. ESPN reported that the league needs $250 to $300 million after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced in April that it would no longer finance it.

The league has planned 10 events in 2027, including five team “majors” at international sites such as Australia, South Africa, England, Hong Kong and Mexico.

The future schedule will also include five team “signature events” in the United States. The league’s website doesn’t indicate where the U.S. events will take place.

After the league’s Aug. 20-23 tournament in Westfield, it’s scheduled to play Aug. 27-30 in Michigan. There have been questions about whether the Michigan event will take place, but the website is still selling tickets.

BUSINESS IS BLOOMING First Street Flowers stand a hit in the Village

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com A typical Thursday morning for Hannah Lazarz is spent in her front yard with a pair of shears.

She carefully picks out her next batch of flowers, snipping them at an angle and plucking off most leaves. Those selected are bound for bouquets and jars for her flower stand, First Street Flowers, which opens at 8 a.m. every Friday morning at 140 N. First St. A recent week’s special was lisianthus, which were in full bloom.

Business at the flower stand, which has been open less than three months, has been wildly successful. Most Friday posts on the First Street Flowers Facebook page advertising the week’s selection receive the same update: “SOLD OUT,” sometimes in less than an hour.

“We have sold out every week,” Lazarz said. “I’ve just been blown away by the response.”

One week in July there was a line waiting for the stand to open.

“I was like, ‘Wow, I’ve made it,’” she said. “It was very sweet.”

Lazarz is relatively new to Zionsville, having moved from Tennessee in early 2025 with her family. She always wanted to open a flower stand — her mom grew native plants, her dad grew vegetables — and being downtown provided the opportunity.

“It had always been in the back of my head to do a flower stand,” she said.

Her husband, Dan Discenza, built her a stand, and her dad built her some raised terraces. Their front yard has been transformed into a growing space for all types of flowers. Lazarz starts all the seeds herself. Some start indoors in her basement.

Flower selection follows the seasons.

Tulips started in April and May. The stand opened after Memorial Day. She’s grown peonies, ranunculus, zinnias and cosmos. About 100 sunflowers were expected to be ready this month.

Dahlias will mark the turn to fall, along with other fall-colored flowers.

Most arrangements feature a prominent flower complemented by other filler flowers.

The flower stand is a side hustle for Lazarz. By day, she is an attorney with Lieff Cabraser law firm, which has offices in Tennessee, New York, California and Germany. She’s represented clients in state and federal courts for fertility, consumer fraud and product defect cases, according to her bio.

Lazarz said she is working on a class-action lawsuit against AI companies that may have used copyrighted material to train their models. Her law firm represented plaintiffs in a $1.5 billion settlement against AI company Anthropic, which was accused of widespread copyright fraud.

As for her side business, there is a technique for preparing fresh-cut flowers. Stems should be cut at an angle. A flower should be cut right before it fully

blooms. This ensures a longer lifespan in a vase. Early morning and evening is best for harvest. Lazarz’s foray into flowers started with her wedding. She grew her own flowers for it.

“That’s how I learned to grow flowers,” she said.

Lazarz hasn’t ruled out growing more next year, depending on demand. She’s also considered partnering with someone in the community to grow more, since she’s likely to eventually run out of space in her yard.

“Flowers just make people happy,” Lazarz said.

The chamber released the finalists for the 49th Monumental Awards, which recognize excellence in architecture, construction, engineering, neighborhood development and placemaking in central Indiana, according to a news release.

Century-old house becomes Greek’s Pizzeria

By Piper Bailey Piper@youarecurrent.com A two-story house nestled between a Walgreens and a neighborhood on Main Street in Brownsburg has found a new life as a Greek’s Pizzeria.

Zionsville residents Mike Cole and his wife Julie bought the house, which is nearly 100 years old, last summer after being charmed by its character and potential as a commercial property. Cole envisioned adding a deck for outdoor seating and making use of the landscaped backyard.

“I’ve scouted in Brownsburg for about the last 12 years, trying to find the perfect location,” Cole said. “I try to find quirky places. I try to stay away from strip mall-type settings. I like the momand-pop-shop look.”

Most of the home’s interior was preserved with the exception of an ADA-compliant bathroom being added to the first floor and converting the kitchen for commercial use. Cole noted he was fortunate to find a space that required very little changing.

In June, the restaurant hosted its soft opening. It held its ribbon-cutting ceremony July 27.

“It’s been overwhelming,” Cole said.

“The support of the Brownsburg community is more than we ever expected. I mean, I’ve opened 20-some (Greek’s Pizzerias), and this is the biggest opening I’ve ever had.”

Cole worked at a Greek’s Pizzeria near Ball State University’s campus in the mid-to-late 90s while he pursued a de-

gree in teaching. A couple of years later, he and Julie opened their first Greek’s restaurant in Angola.

Since then, they have opened and sold more than 20 Greek’s restaurants throughout Indiana. Most recently, the Coles sold their Zionsville store in November 2025 after owning it for about 15 years.

Greek’s Pizzerias offer pizza, breadsticks, salads, sandwiches, pasta, wings and more, all made with fresh ingredients. Pizza dough is made fresh each morning and the sauce is made in-house. The Brownsburg location also offers gyros and vegan options.

“I think half the people are coming for the food,” Cole said. “The other half are coming to see the cool things we did with the house.”

Despite loving renovating properties and opening new restaurants, the Coles have no plans to sell the new store.

Instead, the couple plans to move to Brownsburg where they hope to become more involved with the community.

“My goal now is to dive into the community and try to be involved with as much stuff as we can with the school systems, businesses and other organizations in town,” he said. “We’ve already done three farmers markets (and) we’re signed up for the arts festival in the fall.”

Cole plans to host fundraising nights and other special events with local organizations every few weeks.

Greek’s Pizzeria is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Artomobilia to feature Lane Museum cars

“The ones that are raising the most eyebrows are the Jeff Lane Motor Museum cars,” said John Leonard, Artomobilia’s co-founder and director. “We’re going to bring those into the Arts & Design District under their own power, so people see these things move around. You can go down to Nashville (Tenn.) and see them in a museum but you don’t hear them, you don’t see them move. That’s a unique attribute of what we’ll bring this year.”

When Artomobilia — an automotive design festival and car show — starts at 11 a.m. Aug. 29 in downtown Carmel, the cars will drive into their position in front of the 1933 Lounge on Range Line Road.

“That will be something to see these crazy cars drive down the road,” Leonard said. “These cars will be the last ones into their spots.”

There will be six vehicles from Lane Motor Museum: • 1932 Helicron: A one-of-a-kind, propeller-driven French car found in a barn in 2000, still road-legal in France, and pushed along by a propeller spinning at its nose.

• 1959 Citroën ID 19: The elegant French saloon whose hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension and aerodynamic shape made it decades ahead of its time.

• 1964 Peel P-50 Replica: A nod to the Guinness-record smallest production car ever made, 54 inches long and around 130 pounds, with no reverse gear.

• 2013 Peel Trident Replica: The bubble-topped, clear-domed twoseat sibling of the P50, a microcar that looks straight out of a 1960s space cartoon.

• 1947 Tatra T87: The streamlined, air-cooled rear-V8 Czech saloon with a dorsal fin and a dark legend: so many German officers died driving its 100-mph chassis

“The cars have left the museum for some other big car shows, but they don’t usually take six cars anywhere,” Leonard said.

Leonard said he met Jeff Lane in September 2025 when comedian and car enthusiast Jay Leno appeared at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “(Lane) is a walking encyclopedia on all the cars nobody knows anything about,” Leonard said. “There are all kinds of guys who are experts on Camaros and Corvettes, Lamborghinis and Ferraris. Jeff is an expert on all the cars that are right on the fringe.”

Leonard said 530 cars are registered entrants along with 40 or more that are sponsored and partner cars. The event started with 40 cars in 2008.

“We’ve gotten more space in Carmel’s Midtown,” he said. “We’ve gone much farther south on Elm (Street) than we normally have.”

There are more than 25 collector car classes on display. In addition, there

will be select vehicles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Putnam Park Road Course on display.

Leonard said an estimated 20,000 visitors attend the free event, which ends at 5 p.m.

“Carmel has benefited and Artomobilia has benefited from the fact they do so many events that gives people an opportunity to see downtown Carmel,” Leonard said. “For the last 19 years, we have been giving a certain demographic a great reason to check out Carmel and come back.”

Carmel resident Joe Molina, who has a long career in automotive public relations, has joined Artomobilia as an adviser.

During Artomobilia, Carmel on Canvas, a plein air paint-out exhibition and contest will be featured, It will start Aug. 28.

The VELOCE Hangar Party will return from 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 28 to the Jet Access Center at Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville. It will feature 50 performance automobiles.

The evening includes craft cocktails, dinner and live music.

The Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m Aug. 28. at the Motor District, 1516 West Tournament Trail in Westfield.

FHS choir joins Foreigner

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The Fishers High School Chamber Choir spent a memorable evening at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville.

The school’s 18-member advanced small concert choir joined Foreigner Aug. 7 to sing the chorus of “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Fishers High School Choir Director Scott Archer said the school got the opportunity after a local radio station reached out to the program.

“It was such an incredible beginning of the school year opportunity,” Archer said. “To have this be these kids’ first experience of the school year helps inspire all of us to have a fantastic year.

The Foreigner guys made it so easy to jump right in. It’s an honor that Fishers got to be a part of it.”

Foreigner lead singer Luis Maldonado told the crowd that the band includes local high school programs at every concert because it wants to encourage funding for music education programs,

“It was inspiring to hear Foreigner talk about the value of arts in our school,” senior choir member Addie Clark said. “It’s like all of the hard work we do is seen.”

Senior Nya Beck said it was a fun outing for the choir members.

“It helps start the year off with a special memory,” she said.

FHS Choir Director Laney De Luna agreed.

“It was so incredible to see the gigantic crowd,” De Luna said.

Choir members watched the concert from the lawn seats before joining the band for the encore.

“Being able to watch a professional rock band and their stage presence to captivate an entire amphitheater will help shape the group’s future performances,” Archer said.

Maldonado thanked the crowd for applauding the choir and helping give them a memory of a lifetime.

“The program features a mix of original contemporary and ballet works choreographed by local artists, giving our dancers the opportunity to showcase a range of styles and artistry,” Voreis said.

“The performance also creates a platform for our featured charity to share its mission directly with audiences, with opportunities to learn more about their work and support their organization beyond the performance.”

Voreis said the company this summer is based in downtown Indianapolis at Dance Kaleidoscope and DanceWorks Indy studios.

“We are excited to be starting a new partnership with Dance Innovations in Westfield in just a few weeks, and that will be our main home base for the foreseeable future,” she said.
