Wawa proposed for 191st Street

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com The Noblesville Common Council heard introductory information at its Aug. 11 meeting regarding a change of zoning and a preliminary development plan for Millers Crossing, a commercial development on 3.2 acres at 10113 E. 191st St. featuring a Wawa convenience store and gas station.

The proposal went before the council in 2025 but was withdrawn before it went to the plan commission.

Andrew Buroker, an attorney with Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, represented the developer, JDF Development, at the meeting. He said project investment costs would be approximately $13 million, and the developer has committed an additional $250,000 in road impact fees for any future needed uses by the city on roads around the property.

He also said the area is underserved, and residents would benefit from the addition of a fuel center.

“The location is on a heavily traveled road,” Buroker said. “It’s 1.7 miles from the Speedway at (Ind.) 32 and (Ind.) 37.

So, with all the homes, all the traffic (and) more coming, it’s an amenity that we think is needed and useful and desirable.”

Some residents have a different perspective. William Cooper, who lives east of the proposed development site, said nothing has changed since the project was presented last year, and he still has the same concerns.

borhood,” Cooper said. “The gas pumps are on the neighborhood side, and when we have peak traffic times, people are not going to be able to take a left (turn) out of the development because the traffic is backed up past their development.

I know it’s going to be commercial at some point, I just don’t think a gas station is the appropriate first thing to go into that area.”

Chuck Destro, who lives adjacent to the site, said he moved in a year ago thinking the project was not going to go through after it was pulled last year.

“I’m not asking the council to prevent this from being developed into commercial, but a 24-hour fuel center is not the transition that belongs next to a residential house,” Destro said. “Noblesville is growing, and that property

is going to be developed. You’re going to have an opportunity to get the right fit in there. So, why are we forcing something in there?”

Councilmember Aaron Smith said the proposal lacks support because there is no comprehensive outlook for the area compared to the Wawa on Hazel Dell Road in Noblesville.

“I think that one is very comprehensive, very thoroughly thought out, and I think that’s one of the reasons why it works on Hazel Dell,” Smith said. “I really like the way we did that, and I think this one really lacks support because of that reason.”

Council advances police HQ

Aug. 25 at City Hall, 16 S. 10th St.  WHAT HAPPENED: The council approved a change of zoning and the adoption of a preliminary development plan and ordinance for the construction of the police headquarters.  WHAT IT MEANS: The approval and adoption will rezone the base zone of the property to DT (downtown) and create a government use overlay, or GUO, district for the property — a specialized zoning that allows municipalities to accommodate government services without altering the primary zoning of surrounding properties. The city has set permitted and prohibited uses for the property that focus on community uses and takes out the majority of the auto-related uses that were allowed within the DT district. After several districts stopped being polling places because of security concerns, all have now agreed to host vote centers throughout the county, according to the release.

Hamilton County Clerk Kathy Kreag Williams, who authored Indiana’s original vote center legislation while serving in the Indiana House of Representatives, said the model is designed to make voting easier for residents while allowing elections to keep pace with county growth.

ously approved lease rental financing and bond authorization. The first serves as a down payment toward overall project costs, leveraging cash reserves that have been set aside over several years. It would authorize $2.6 million from the Civil City Capital Project Reserve Fund to buy down the total size of the required bond, bringing the upfront down payment to approximately 12 percent of the total project cost. The remaining 88 percent of the project would be financed over a 22-year period. The second ordinance would authorize the first half-year payment, $1.29 million out of cash reserves, which would be made in December before the January 2027 due date.  WHAT’S NEXT: Public hearings for both ordinances are scheduled for the Aug. 25 council meeting.

“One of the biggest reasons this proposal works is because our local school districts have stepped up as partners once again,” Williams stated. “By opening their buildings as vote centers, they’re helping ensure voters across Hamilton County have a convenient place to cast their ballot close to home.

Commissioners approve polling sites, agreements

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com The Hamilton County Commissioners approved polling sites for the general election, along with a grant agreement for the county’s health department and a memorandum of understanding regarding Judicial Center construction at their Aug. 10 meeting.

The next commissioners meeting is at 1 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Judicial Center in Noblesville.  WHAT HAPPENED: The commissioners approved polling sites for the Nov. 3 general election.  WHAT IT MEANS: There will be 102 polling sites this year.  WHAT’S NEXT: The county’s election board is pursuing the approval of vote centers. Hamilton County Clerk Kathy Williams said if approved, all six Hamilton County public school districts will be used as vote centers, but they will not be polling sites this fall.  WHAT HAPPENED: The commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding between the county and the City of Noblesville.  WHAT IT MEANS: The MOU regards

the planned expansion of the Judicial Center. During construction, the west stairwell on the building will be temporarily unavailable. The MOU details safety and emergency measures to ensure occupant safety throughout construction.  WHAT’S NEXT: Hamilton County Chief Compliance Officer Steven Rushforth said a drill is planned for next month, and there will be signage throughout the building to direct occupants where to go in case of an emergency.

What happened: The commissioners approved a subgrant agreement between the Hamilton County Health Department and Trinity Free Clinic.  WHAT IT MEANS: Hamilton County Health Department Administrator Jason LeMaster said the agreement is for the health department’s TB Program.

He said one thing missing from the program is the ability to order X-rays for patients, and the subgrant will allow them to order and pay for them.

He said about 50 to 60 patients need the X-rays each year.  WHAT’S NEXT: The subgrant is for $10,000, and LeMaster said it should get them through the next year and a half.

Why I Started Carmel Salt Caves - A Journey in Wellness

Years ago, I underwent a ten-hour brain surgery to remove a tumor. What followed wasn’t simply recovery — it was rebuilding an entirely different life. There were days when standing felt impossible. Walking required determination. Balance disappeared. My confidence disappeared with it. For a long time, I kept waiting to feel “better.” Then one day I realized something profound. Wellness isn’t a destination. It’s a decision we make every single day. Not once. Every day.

My journey back wasn’t one dramatic breakthrough. It wasn’t one medication, one therapy, or one miracle. It was thousands of tiny choices. A healthier meal. A short walk.

Resident joins school board race

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Noblesville resident Denise Dye has joined the race for one of two open seats on the Noblesville Schools board.

Dye will face incumbents Misti Ray and Joe Forgey, who are running for reelection.

Dye, who has three adult sons, has spent Dye nearly 25 years in the mortgage industry. She said that experience has taught her to evaluate complex information, manage resources responsibly, communicate clearly and make decisions that affect individuals and families.

“I am running for the Noblesville School Board because I believe every child is gifted, created with purpose and deserving of an education that prepares them to thrive,” Dye said. “I am stepping forward because I feel called to serve and help keep our schools strong.”

She said her campaign is centered on prioritizing education, partnering with parents and promoting responsible fiscal stewardship.

“I want every child to be challenged, encouraged and given the opportunity to reach their potential,” Dye said. “I want our teachers to feel valued and have the support they need. I want parents to feel welcomed, informed, heard and respected as essential partners in their children’s education. I also want our community to have confidence that the resources entrusted to our schools are handled transparently and responsibly.”

Dye said her background in service through her church community has reinforced her belief that leadership requires compassion, accountability and a willingness to serve. She has volunteered with her church’s youth mentorship programs and assisted with groups and events, among other activities.

School district lowers referendum rate news@currentnoblesville.com Noblesville Schools has announced it is lowering the referendum rate it would use for 2027, should it be approved by voters this fall.

The district, which previously committed to no higher than a 41-cent rate for 2027, is now committing to a 38.5cent rate and lower rates than originally projected for the remaining life of the referendum. The current rate, which expires at the end of 2026, is 37 cents.

The rate is still projected to increase in small increments until 2031 to continue adequate funding, according to district officials. The updates bring the new average annual monthly increase over eight years for a $350,000 median home to $1.88 more per month than what residents currently pay.

Superintendent Dan Hile said the decrease comes after the district received the latest certified assessed value updates for Noblesville.

“Because our current referendum will automatically expire at the end of 2026, this referendum continuation proposal is about maintaining existing staff and services,” Hile stated. “We are committed to doing that as cost effectively as possible for our taxpayers.

Under this new rate, some homeowners may even see a decrease from what they are paying currently.”

District officials say although the ballot language reads that the district is asking for a maximum of 57 cents per $100 of assessed value, it’s updated plan would avoid hitting the 57-cent mark at any time.

“Unfortunately, the required referendum timeline meant that we had to certify an official rate for the ballot

before we received the latest updates that just came in,” Hile stated. “We will not use more than we need and we do not expect to need the full 57 cents at any point now. Our board will vote publicly on a budget rate every year and we expect the community to hold us accountable.”

The district also has launched a calculator that shows taxpayers how much they are paying for the 2018 referendum and how much they would pay over the life of the proposed 2026 referendum, including growth in property values and referendum rates over time.

“We know that people are of course concerned about how much this will cost them personally,” Hile stated. “This calculator lays out all the details for everyone to make their own informed decisions.”

New library branch plans advance

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com The Hamilton County Council approved a resolution that moves forward plans for a new Hamilton East Public Library branch.

The council approved the resolution at its Aug. 5 meeting. It grants HEPL the ability to issue bonds not to exceed $20,605,000 for a 30,000-square-foot branch on 10 acres on Olio Road in Wayne Township.

The bonds will assist in paying the total construction cost of the new building, including site improvements, equipment and technology.

Hamilton County Council President Brad Beaver said council members have been pleased with HEPL’s performance and stewardship over the last several years.

“We recently met with HEPL leadership to review their financial position, and we believe they are in a strong and stable place to begin moving forward with a new location and will not result in increasing the residents’ taxes,” Beaver said.

Beaver said the council reviews requests for bonds because it is responsible for ensuring any public borrowing is financially sound, transparent and in the best interest of residents.

“This review helps maintain fiscal responsibility across local government and protects taxpayers while allowing important community projects, like library expansions, to move forward,” Beaver said.

HEPL Library Director Melissa Loiselle said the goal is to break ground in the spring of 2027 and open in 2028.

“We appreciate the council’s support and are excited about the opportunity to expand library access and services to the Wayne Township community,” Loiselle said. “The next steps over the upcoming months are completing the design and engineering, receiving bids and our board (adopting) the final bond resolution. We also plan to hold a series of focus groups in September to provide design feedback and direction.”

Front Porch Music Festival returns

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com The Front Porch Music Festival, a free annual community music event held on Logan Street in downtown Noblesville, will return from 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 29.

The event will feature 25 bands playing on 14 porches. Music styles include bluegrass, rock and country, among others.

The inaugural Front Porch Music Festival was held in 2021. Event co-creator Jason Pearson said the event this year will feature more food and drink vendors, like Bier Brewery, Ash & Elm Cider Co., Bar Ellis, Kona Ice, The Nesst and Blue Smoke BBQ, among others.

“We feel pretty great about what we have, so I think not changing anything has been our gold,” Pearson said. “What makes the event great is it’s focused on music, the musicians and bringing the community together to enjoy a variety of musicians without interruptions from anything else.”

Bands playing the event for the first time are The Rental Cars, Booze Hounds Bluegrass, Cease & Resist, Kenworth Bros. and The Operators.

of it, which means that we’re doing something they appreciate and (they) value how we’re promoting the bands,” Pearson said.

Pearson said watching the community enjoy the event motivates him to continue presenting it each year.

“There’s not a week that goes by where I don’t interact with somebody that tells me how important this event is,” Pearson said. “They look forward to this. I think the emphasis of what we’ve been able to do, and watching it grow organically, is what keeps me wanting to do it each year.”

Grissom Air Show set for Aug. 29-30

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Those who attend and enjoy the Grissom Air & Space Expo later this month can thank an area resident.

Maj. Joni Friar, who serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, is the air show director for the Aug. 29-30 event at Grissom Air Reserve Base near Peru and Bunker Hill.

Friar, who lives in Zionsville, has been on orders for the last three years with the Air Force, serving as the wing executive officer at Grissom. She added the title of air show director in December 2025 because of her experience with aviation. When she was in the Air Force, she was a drone pilot, operating the RQ-4 Global Hawk, a high-altitude surveillance aircraft.

As air show director, Friar is in charge of coordinating and scheduling the event and working with the base’s many partners to ensure the experience is enjoyable for spectators. And perhaps more importantly, making sure there are enough restroom facilities, she joked. A previous air show at Grissom did not have enough.

The Thunderbirds, an Air Force demonstration unit, are the highlight of the show. They are known for their flight formations and solos.

“If you’ve never seen the Thunderbirds, (they) are unmatched,” Friar said. “Everytime I’ve (seen them), ‘I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is amazing.’”

The Thunderbirds will perform at 4 p.m. both days.

“We really hit the lottery with them,” Friar said.

Admission and parking are free.

There will be food vendors and kids activities. Roots in Blue, a music group with the Air Force’s Band of Mid-America, will perform.

On display will be a variety of aircraft, including the KC-135 Stratotanker — Grissom is known for the 434th Air Refueling Wing — along with one of the only B-29s that still flies and a C-5 Super Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the Air Force.

“Aviation enthusiasts are going to love this if they’re in the Indy area,” Friar said.

Friar was working at a law firm immediately after college when she thought about what she wanted to do with her life. A friend recommended enlisting in the Air Force. She had her sights set on being a pilot but was 0.2 inches too short, so she became a drone pilot instead.

“I’m very lucky in my path,” Friar said.

Friar’s on-orders time will conclude later this fall. She’ll then go back to being “Civilian Joni” and her regular job with Northrop Grumman — training NATO pilots on the RQ-4 drone. She’ll spend two months in Sicily, her seventh trip doing so.

A free community event, including a meet-and-greet with Thunderbirds crews, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Grissom Air Museum.

“I just want people to show up to this thing,” Friar said.

Hopper-Landrum crowned Mrs. United Universe news@currentnoblesville.com Noblesville resident Jessica Marie Hopper-Landrum has been crowned Mrs. United Universe 2026 — an international pageant title that celebrates married women for their leadership, advocacy and community involvement.

Hopper-Landrum first made history in 2024 as the first woman from Indiana to win the Mrs. United USA title, giving her the opportunity to represent Indiana on a national platform.

“I’ve always believed that it’s not the crown that matters, it’s the woman wearing it,” Hopper-Landrum stated.

“A title gives you a platform and a microphone, but what matters is what you choose to do with them. My goal has always been to leave people better than I found them.”

Hopper-Landrum, 33, built her career as a pageant competitor, coach, model and advocate in Indiana, eventually taking her pageant career beyond the United States. In 2021, she was crowned Miss Ireland Supranational, representing Ireland on the international stage.

In 2023, she was crowned Mrs. Ireland World, where she went on to place in the top 15 internationally and win the International Fitness/Swimsuit Award.

She also is the founder of Safe Homes, an initiative with a mission to help end child abuse and create safer environments for children. She said she hopes her new title will allow her to bring greater awareness to child safety and encourage more adults to recognize their role in protecting children.

LIV GOLF LIVES ON news@youarecurrent.com LIV Golf has secured funding from an outside investor to keep the circuit alive beyond this season.

ESPN reported Aug. 5 that league CEO Scott O’Neil didn’t identify the investor or how much money will be injected into the league, but said terms should be finalized soon, with the transaction to be closed in September.

O’Neill stated that there is interest from additional parties to serve as minority investors. ESPN reported that the league needs $250 to $300 million after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced in April that it would no longer finance it.

The league has planned 10 events in 2027, including five team “majors” at international sites such as Australia, South Africa, England, Hong Kong and Mexico.

The future schedule will also include five team “signature events” in the United States. The league’s website doesn’t indicate where the U.S. events will take place.

After the league’s Aug. 20-23 tournament in Westfield, it’s scheduled to play Aug. 27-30 in Michigan. There have been questions about whether the Michigan event will take place, but the website is still selling tickets.

The Noblesville Home Show will feature local vendors, home renovation ideas, remodeling experts and smart home design products. In addition, there will be free yoga classes, mahjong games, a golf simulator and a free flower arrangement design class.

NextGen Home Shows, which creates regional home improvement, remodeling and innovation expos, is putting on the event.

“We bring in a lot of different home contractors — anything from windows and doors to backyard furniture, bathroom remodels and kitchen remodels,” said Ana Greber, an advisor with NextGen Home Shows. “For this show, specifically, we’re also bringing in some local businesses (from) the Hamilton County area. She said bringing in local vendors exemplifies the organization’s hyperlocal approach.

“We find that people sometimes have things going on in their home, but aren’t sure if they want to renovate them or if they’re ready to hire someone for them, and this gives them another reason to come to the show and ask the questions they want to ask,” Greber said. “It feels a little less burdensome for people. We don’t want to be just another national marketplace events company. We want to really be giving back to the local community.”

Local projects recognized

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com The Indy Chamber has announced finalists for its 49th annual Monumental Awards, recognizing projects and organizations shaping the built environment and driving growth across the Indianapolis region.

Among the finalists are two Noblesville projects. The Reimagine Pleasant Street project, a recently completed multiyear initiative to improve eastwest connectivity in the city, is a finalist in the Engineering category. The Riverview Health Arena at Innovation Mile, a multipurpose sports and entertainment venue, is a finalist in the Accelerator award category.

“Both projects have been pivotal to the continued growth and development of our community,” Noblesville Mayor Chris Jensen said. “Strategic investments in major infrastructure and economic development projects further demonstrate our commitment to making Noblesville one of the top communities in the country to live, work and thrive.”

According to a news release from Indy Chamber, the Monumental Awards have celebrated excellence in architecture, construction, engineering, neighborhood development and placemaking throughout central Indiana for nearly five decades.

Winners will be announced during the 2026 Monumental Awards Oct. 14 at Crowne Plaza Union Station in downtown Indianapolis.

The Riverview Health Arena at Innovation Mile is a finalist in a new category this year. Accelerator awards recognize projects that demonstrate significant alignment with the region’s long-term economic development priorities outlined in Accelerate Indy 2030.

According to the release, finalists were selected through a judging process facilitated by regional sanctioning organizations representing the disciplines recognized by the Monumental Awards.

The evening will also feature a People’s Choice Award, giving the public an opportunity to recognize a project making an impact across central Indiana.

Additional details on public voting will be announced ahead of the event.

Noblesville volunteer steps up for students

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com For Noblesville resident Rob Bocko, helping students navigate life is a calling.

Bocko volunteers with Compass Mentoring, a school-based, volunteer mentoring program at Noblesville Schools that provides opportunities for students to build a developmental relationship with an adult who offers support, guidance and encouragement to help students overcome challenges, and set and reach goals.

Bocko said he has been volunteering with Noblesville Schools since the early 2000s, when his kids started school. He has been involved with the textbook adoption committee, Miller Ambassadors and the Noblesville Schools Education Foundation.

“I’m very involved with the schools in general, and that started way back with being a parent volunteer and helping in classrooms when my kids were little,” Bocko said. “My youngest is a senior at Noblesville High School now, and I have three NHS grads. I’ve got

some miles on me.”

That involvement led him to Compass Mentoring, which Mentor Coordinator Nicole McClain launched in 2020.

“I thought it sounded pretty wonderful,” Bocko said. “It really didn’t take off that first year all that well because of the pandemic, so that first year was mostly learning, talking, organizing and getting ready. The next year there were eight of us volunteering, and last I heard that number was approaching 100.”

The program is offered at all 10 of the district’s schools, and more than 100 students are involved. Bocko said it has

provided him a chance to be a steady adult in the lives of several students.

“It’s not counseling. You’re not going in to fix anybody. You’re not going in to solve problems. Really, I am just there to be a constant presence in someone’s life,” Bocko said. “Through the process of building a relationship and building trust, if they choose to share something with me, I’m also there to be a trusted resource. If something were to come up that I think rises to the level of ‘Oh my, I think the school counselor needs to hear this,’ I’m there to help be part of that support. I’m really just there to be a presence that I wish I would have had in my life when I was a kid.”

Bocko said his work with Compass Mentoring helps him teach kids how to function as part of the community.

“I care about the world we’re leaving for our kids,” Bocko said. “It kind of comes back to what I wish I would have had. I figured out a lot of things on my own. It would have been so much easier to figure out with somebody to have a conversation with.”

McClain said Bocko’s work with the program has extended beyond the students he’s mentored, saying it’s reflected in the culture of Compass Mentoring itself.

“From the very beginning of the program, he has walked alongside students from elementary school through high school, ensuring they feel seen, known and supported,” McClain said.

“As mentor coordinator, he’s been a trusted sounding board whose wisdom, perspective and steady encouragement have helped shape me as a leader and a person. Whenever I need an extra volunteer, a thoughtful perspective or someone I know will show up for a student without hesitation, he’s one of the first people I think of.”

Former accountant takes up mixology in retirement

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Noblesville resident Gregory Mitchell has found a unique hobby in retirement.

Mitchell, 77, is a former certified internal auditor, certified fraud examiner, certified construction auditor and chartered global management accountant who is now an amateur mixologist. He began making craft cocktails after retiring in 2015.

He became interested in the craft after finding a YouTube channel in 2021.

“I happened to come across a channel run by a guy named Anders Erickson,” Mitchell said. “He was a bartender for 20 years who lost his job during COVID-19. His girlfriend at the time, now his wife, Azusa Inaba, came up with this introductory video that was beautiful and really caught my interest.”

At the time, Erickson was posting weekly videos about how to create cocktails. Mitchell said he began collecting the recipes and eventually created his own.

In December 2024, Mitchell realized he could register his creations with the National Bartenders Association — a professional organization for bartenders and servers.

“I submitted two cocktails that I had already come up with, and they were accepted,” Mitchell said. “I would come up with the ingredients, and I’d submit that to AI and ask, ‘Is this cocktail unique?’ And to my surprise, nine times out of 10, it would come back and say, ‘Yes.’” Mitchell now has 108 cocktails registered with the National Bartenders Association, with four more waiting to be approved. David Craver, president of the National Bartenders Association, said the number is significant.

“It is not normal for an individual to submit 100-plus cocktail recipes,” Craver said. “Most people submit a few, not 100. Greg’s passion for mixology is truly amazing. His creativity shines through

in his recipes.”

Mitchell said finding the National Bartenders Association inspired him to keep creating cocktails.

“It’s a dream come true, because it’s hard to get recognition if you’re just an amateur mixologist,” Mitchell said. “I was already having a ball doing it, but it really gave me the incentive to keep going. I have a whole range of cocktails I haven’t even touched yet, and so far, I’m not bored doing it.”

Mitchell said he now comes up with variations of cocktails without much thought. He makes all of his creations in his kitchen, saying he typically creates one a day.

“All cocktails are a balance between sweetness and bitterness, or sweetness and sourness, along with a spirit, so I now have that formula down,” Mitchell said. “Most recently, my wife asked that I create a cocktail the color of sea glass, and in a day I had it. I also distill my

own water to make my own light ice.”

He also stays engaged with the process by creating different series of drinks. He is especially proud of a series inspired by Dante’s “Divine Comedy,” a 14th-century poem written by Dante Alighieri in the 1300s.

“I really enjoy trying to do something beyond just creating cocktails,” Mitchell said. “With the ‘Divine Comedy’ series, I tried to create a cocktail for each circle of the Inferno, each terrace of the Purgatorio and each sphere of the Paradiso, and it ended up being a 28-cocktail series.”

He also has created a cocktail series based on the movie and book “Dune,” and a series inspired by the elements air, fire, water and Earth. Mitchell also dedicates cocktails to family and friends.

Mitchell said although his cocktails might be too complex for a typical bar, he is working to create a recipe book for

people to use at home.

“I have found that my cocktails really don’t jive well at a cocktail bar because they are looking for fast and easy cocktails that can pop out easily,” Mitchell said. “Mine are a little more complicated, but it’s creative, and I think people who have time with a home bar could appreciate them.”

Raising awareness for rabies news@youarecurrent.com The Hamilton County Health Department is reminding residents to report all animal bites and take precautions to avoid contact with bats and other wild or unvaccinated animals, saying rabies activity typically increases during warmer months.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the nervous system of humans, pets and wildlife. It can be transmitted through a bite, scratch or exposure to the saliva of an infected animal.

“Residents have reported bites from a racoon, a chipmunk, a snapping turtle and several bats so far this summer,” Hamilton County Health Department Administrator Jason LeMaster stated.

LeMaster said Hamilton County regularly investigates domestic and wild animal bites. When a person is bitten by a domestic animal, the department works to implement a standard 10-day quarantine. If bites are from a wild or unvaccinated animal that cannot be tested, a rabies vaccine is typically administered.

“Wildlife should never be fed, handled or treated as pets,” stated Dr. Tim Fleck, a Noblesville veterinarian and member of the Hamilton County Board

of Health. “Even if an animal appears calm or injured, approaching or trying to help it can put you both at risk. The safest thing to do is to admire wildlife from a distance and contact the appropriate professionals if you believe an animal needs help.”

The health department is reminding residents of the following rabies prevention reminders: • Do not feed, touch or adopt wild animals, stray dogs or cats.

• Be sure pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations.

• Don’t let family pets outside unattended, especially at night.

• Keep your property free of stored bird seed and other foods which may attract wildlife and strays.

• Tell children not to touch any animal they do not know and encourage them to tell an adult immediately if they are bitten or scratched by any animal.

• Report all animal bites or contact with wild animals to the health department.

• Report any wild animal that appears sick to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish & Wildlife Health Program.

Residents launch cake pop carts

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Self-serve cake pop carts have become a trend, and two Noblesville residents are joining in on it.

Haley Blake recently launched her cake pop cart, Blake’s Cottage Bakes, at her home at 11731 Brooks Farm Blvd.

Her Aug. 7 grand opening featured flavors like cookies & cream, brownie, s’mores and confetti cake.

Blake, a mother of two, said she has been baking since she was a child. She has put a twist on her cake pop recipes, making them organically from a scratch cake base.

“I wanted to start a business that is dye-free and uses healthier ingredients for the parents who have kids that are allergic to some of these dyes,” Blake said. “I wanted to have a business behind me that has natural and healthier options.”

Blake’s cart is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. She said she sold 178 cake pops in her opening weekend.

“I was so blown away,” Blake said. “I was expecting it to be months before I was going to be able to do something like this, and knowing that I practically sold out during my first weekend was absolutely crazy and insane to me. I definitely would not have been able to do that without the community in Noblesville, so I’m so grateful.”

Blake plans to expand, adding items like cinnamon rolls to her cart, and

also is planning to change her flavors throughout the seasons.

Lauren Blevins also launched a selfserve cake pop cart, The Pop Mama, Aug. 7 at her home at 11205 Funny Cide Dr. in Noblesville. She said she got the idea from TikTok. “One of my toddler’s favorite snacks when we go to Starbucks is cake pops,” Blevins said. “A couple months ago, I was like, ‘I want to make cake pops because I’m buying them all the time.’

The cake pop stand started as a fun little idea for me as a stay-at-home mom, and it has grown so much faster than I ever expected.”

Her flavors include banana pudding, chocolate salted caramel, chocolate covered strawberry and cookie dough, but consistently change. She opens the cart at 10 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, saying she sold out in her first weekend.

“I don’t really see myself expanding much more than a cart, just because I’m a mom of three boys, so I am really busy,” Blevins said. “I don’t want to burn myself out on it because I have owned a business before and I know what it’s like to overdo it. I have been posting on TikTok, @blevinslaur, for two years, and I want to hopefully grow a community there and help other moms find something for (themselves).”

Although they don’t require a license, Blake and Blevins say they follow Indiana’s home-based vendor requirements, including food-safety practices, proper labeling and having the required food-handler certification.

Noblesville singer finds her voice in pop

By Alex McCarthy alex@youarecurrent.com Aura Ray’s feet hurt.

It was the Noblesville-based singer-songwriter’s first time visiting New York City, and she wanted to wear high heels as she walked through Times Square. After a while, she couldn’t stand wearing them any longer, so she took them off and explored the city while feeling the cement under her bare feet.

The experience inspired her latest single, “Barefoot in Times Square,” which was scheduled to come out Aug. 14.

That single, along with her July release “Poisoned Message in a Bottle,” will appear on her upcoming full-length album “Between Places.” Ray, who was born and raised in Germany before moving to central Indiana, hopes the album will come out by the end of the year.

Ray, 24, and her music partner Sean Noel are performing four or more times per week across Indianapolis and the northern suburbs to raise money for the album. They also have a GoFundMe collecting donations to make the album a reality.

Ray said it feels weird to ask for money but noted there are many hidden costs to releasing an album.

Noel, who performs with Ray in the duo Beauty and the Beats, said the recording process at Round Table Recording Co. in Broad Ripple has been rewarding.

“The recording process has been an incredible journey because you get to hear these songs evolve from an idea we created into something real,” Noel said via email. “What makes it especially meaningful is knowing that the music is being created for people to connect with, not just to sit on our hard drives.”

Most of Ray’s output has leaned toward country in recent years, but her newest releases are pop songs. She and Noel have explored various sounds and find that pop might suit her best.

“We love to play all genres, and I feel like pop just sums it up all together,” Ray said. “It has influences of everything and especially international pop. I love to sing in different languages.”

Ray’s music is constantly shifting, both in genre and in language. She said her debut album is about times of transition. As someone who has moved from Germany to the United States and who has experimented with different genres, Ray speaks from experience when she writes about being between places.

“Sometimes you’re between relationships, between dreams, between who you were and who you’re becoming,” Ray said. “And sometimes you haven’t figured it out yet, and that’s OK. This album is not about having all the answers.

It’s about figuring out where you belong, and if that takes time, that’s OK.” Ray is taking her time, too. She’s trying to make sure the album is the best it can be. She’s also taking her music career as it comes. She thought about heading to Nashville at some point in her career, but said she has felt immense support from the Indianapolis area music community and she’s happy where she is now.

She is ready to follow that path wherever it leads her — whether she’s in heels or making the journey barefoot.

The Fishers High School Chamber Choir spent a memorable evening at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville.

The school’s 18-member advanced small concert choir joined Foreigner Aug. 7 to sing the chorus of “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Fishers High School Choir Director Scott Archer said the school got the opportunity after a local radio station reached out to the program.

“It was such an incredible beginning of the school year opportunity,” Archer said. “To have this be these kids’ first experience of the school year helps inspire all of us to have a fantastic year.

The Foreigner guys made it so easy to jump right in. It’s an honor that Fishers got to be a part of it.”

Foreigner lead singer Luis Maldonado told the crowd that the band includes local high school programs at every concert because it wants to encourage funding for music education programs,

which have suffered cuts across the nation for the past several years.

“It was inspiring to hear Foreigner talk about the value of arts in our school,” senior choir member Addie Clark said. “It’s like all of the hard work we do is seen.”

Senior Nya Beck said it was a fun outing for the choir members.

“It helps start the year off with a special memory,” she said.

FHS Choir Director Laney De Luna agreed.

“It was so incredible to see the gigantic crowd,” De Luna said.

Choir members watched the concert from the lawn seats before joining the band for the encore.

“Being able to watch a professional rock band and their stage presence to captivate an entire amphitheater will help shape the group’s future performances,” Archer said.

Maldonado thanked the crowd for applauding the choir and helping give them a memory of a lifetime.

DISPATCH  ICC expands locations, staff — The Indianapolis Children’s Choir plans to expand its choir locations and staff to serve more children in central Indiana as rehearsals begin this fall. New sites will be on Indianapolis’ eastside in Irvington, on the southside at the University of Indianapolis and in northern Indiana in Upland. Staff also is expanding to direct choirs across the state. Caitlyn McGlynn joins the ICC team as the outreach and marketing coordinator, who along with administrative duties will use her prior experience from the Cincinnati Youth Choir to direct eight ICC ensembles from Preparatory Choir to ICC’s intermediate level in various locations across the state. When Artomobilia — an automotive design festival and car show — starts at 11 a.m. Aug. 29 in downtown Carmel, the cars will drive into their position in front of the 1933 Lounge on Range Line Road.

“That will be something to see these crazy cars drive down the road,” Leonard said. “These cars will be the last ones into their spots.”

There will be six vehicles from Lane Motor Museum: • 1932 Helicron: A one-of-a-kind, propeller-driven French car found in a barn in 2000, still road-legal in France, and pushed along by a propeller spinning at its nose.

• 1959 Citroën ID 19: The elegant French saloon whose hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension and aerodynamic shape made it decades ahead of its time.

• 1964 Peel P-50 Replica: A nod to the Guinness-record smallest production car ever made, 54 inches long and around 130 pounds, with no reverse gear.

• 2013 Peel Trident Replica: The bubble-topped, clear-domed two-seat sibling of the P50, a microcar that looks straight out of a 1960s space cartoon.

• 1947 Tatra T87: The streamlined, air-cooled rear-V8 Czech saloon with a dorsal fin and a dark legend: so many German officers died driving its 100-mph chassis that they were reportedly banned from it.

• 1964 Amphicar 770: The most successful amphibious car ever built, a convertible that swims on twin propellers and carries the highest tailfins of any production car.

“The cars have left the museum for some other big car shows, but they don’t usually take six cars anywhere,” Leonard said.

Leonard said he met Jeff Lane in September 2025 when comedian and car enthusiast Jay Leno appeared at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “(Lane) is a walking encyclopedia on all the cars nobody knows anything about,” Leonard said.

Leonard said 530 cars are registered entrants along with 40 or more that are sponsored and partner cars. The event started with 40 cars in 2008.

“We’ve gotten more space in Carmel’s Midtown,” he said. “We’ve gone much farther south on Elm (Street) than we normally have.”

There are more than 25 collector car classes on display. In addition, there will be select vehicles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Putnam Park Road Course on display.

Leonard said an estimated 20,000 visitors attend the free event, which ends at 5 p.m.

During Artomobilia, Carmel on Canvas, a plein air paint-out exhibition and contest will be featured, It will start Aug. 28.

The VELOCE Hangar Party will return from 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 28 to the Jet Access Center at Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville. It will feature 50 performance automobiles. The evening includes craft cocktails, dinner and live music.

The Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m Aug. 28. at the Motor District, 1516 West Tournament Trail in Westfield.

Bald legals soar on billboards Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Darron Stewart and Nick Wagner have baldly gone where no lawyers have gone before.

The two personal injury attorneys don’t take most things too personally, especially their lack of hair. In fact, they can make a case that being so open about it has been good for business. You will enjoy their unique way of reaching out to the public, highlighting their lack of a mop on top and their legal acumen.

Their billboards that celebrate their shiny pates are a testimony to the power of self-deprecating humor. These two bald legals have created more than a dozen of these billboards to attract potential clients who may be uncomfortable combing over the internet in search of legal assistance. In fact, the two have been adamantly opposed to comb-overs most of their adult lives.

Darron says, “We have a lot of fun.

We have a serious job to do, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it. We are convinced that this method of reaching out to the public makes the process less scary and makes our legal team more approachable.”

They don’t know exactly how the balding billboard idea began, but talking to these very creative guys one morning last week, I’m pretty sure the concept just came off the top of their heads.

Darron Stewart’s father started the firm back in 1982, making Darron the heir apparent of the business. Unlike the counselor’s hair, the firm has experienced steady growth, now employing some 40 people in Carmel. Nick started as an unpaid intern in 2010, and a year

later joined the company.

“I love the creative part of working here,” Nick said. Then, pointing to his skull, he noted, “But I haven’t had a part up here in 20 years.”

“My former minister used to say that God only made a few perfect people,” he said. “The rest have hair.”

Despite their legal specialty involving personal injury, the bald boys do not want people to be distracted while driving and then cause a collision. But at home, they are big advocates of really close shaves.
