New bank OK’d after redesign

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com A rezone for a proposed new bank building on 116th Street close to Olio Road in Fishers received a favorable recommendation Aug. 5 from the Fishers Plan Commission after the design was amended to remove a drive-thru window.

The Citizens State Bank project was introduced to the Fishers City Council July 20, and some councilors took issue at that time with the proposed drive-thru. Since then, the petitioners adjusted the proposal to remove the drive-thru, and changed the architecture to better fit the residential character of the surrounding neighborhood.

Citizens State Bank has offices in downtown Fishers near the Fishers Municipal Center. The proposed 4,400-square-foot standalone building on 116th Street would be built on .83-acres next to the Kroger on Olio Road, a site previously intended for a new Drive Planning Investment Firm office. The only structure on the lot now is an unoccupied house.

During a public hearing prior to the Aug. 5 vote, several people expressed concern about added traffic along 116th Street. Speakers requested a right-in, right-out restriction for those entering and leaving the bank, to eliminate risky left turns. They also wanted the Planned Unit Development adjusted to prohibit signs on the building — limiting signage to only a monument-style sign.

One speaker added that the proposed parking lot was too large and another speaker requested that two large trees at the front of the lot be preserved.

Kevin Buchheit of Kreig DeVault, representing the petitioner, responded

to some of the public comments. He said the large trees appear to be in a proposed green space and likely would be protected from removal. He added that city engineers looked into the traffic impact of the business and had no concerns.

Despite that, commissioners expressed interest in adjusting the PUD. Although the Plan Commission could not change the proposed PUD, several Fishers City Council members sit on the commission and said those concerns could be brought to the council.

“What I’d like to propose here today is that we can send a favorable recommendation for the zoning,” said Selina Stoller, a councilor who also serves on the Plan Commission. “As for the list of changes that are from the Drive Planning PUD to the Citizens Bank PUD — including the right-in, right-out, the signage, the parking spaces and things like that — I’d like to send those things back to council to where we can have a discussion with them, with the petitioner, when they come to it.”

The favorable recommendation was unanimously approved.

Commission noncommittal on ADUs

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com A proposal to allow Accessory Dwelling Units in a portion of Fishers’ more dense downtown area received no recommendation following a discussion Aug. 5 by the Fishers Plan Commission.

The amendment to city code was introduced to the Fishers City Council in May. ADUs, often called “mother-inlaw apartments,” are additional living quarters on the same site as a primary single-family dwelling.

The proposed amendment would allow one ADU per lot, up to 800 square feet, that provides “complete independent living facilities for one or more persons. It may take various forms: a detached unit; a unit that is part of an accessory structure, such as a detached garage; or a unit that is part of an expanded or remodeled dwelling,” according to the proposal.

gave a presentation and said the goal is to diversify housing options and increase density in the downtown area.

“ADUs have been frequently requested by property owners in the past across the city, and this area of the city is where we believe it makes the most sense and most aligns with our goals,” he said. “Practically speaking, most areas of the Village Center zoning district have already been developed as apartments or townhomes. So, the true area where this could be utilized is within

the South Village area, between South Street and Fishers Point Boulevard, south of 116th Street.”

ADUs can be attached to the primary dwelling, such as a basement apartment or an apartment above an attached garage. They also can be a standalone structure on the property, as long as they are smaller than the main structure and have their own paved access from the street.

Nobody spoke during a public hearing on the issue. Hilleary said the city received one emailed comment opposing the measure.

Commissioners expressed concern about a need for more parking for homeowners who choose to build an ADU. Tiffany Ditlevson, who also is a Fishers City Council member, added that she would prefer a requirement that ADUs be connected in some way to the main structure.

A motion to send the matter back to the city council with no recommendation passed unanimously. The council was expected to consider the amendment Aug. 17.

Prairie Reserve, proposed by Davis Building Group, is at 13375 Prairie Baptist Rd. in between Southeastern Parkway and 136th Street. A plat for the neighborhood was unanimously approved Aug. 5 by the Fishers Plat Committee.

Christy Cashin of the city’s Community and Economic Development Department gave a presentation about the development. She said the area already is zoned residential and will not need to be rezoned.

“The proposed plat will be subdivided from the existing three lots to 26 single-family lots, along with common area and public right-of-way,” she said.

“The development will include new paths along Prairie Baptist Road, as well as an internal pedestrian network of trails and sidewalks.”

One person spoke during a public hearing on the proposal. Matt Burke said he’s not opposed to the development, but he would like the city to improve Prairie Baptist Road, which he said is not in good shape.

Engineering Director Hatem Mekky said the city is looking at road work for that entire area, adding that it will take time and funding.

The plat was approved with the condition that developers continue working with city planners.

Local projects named Monumental Award finalists news@currentinfishers.com Several Fishers projects are finalists in the Indy Chamber’s annual Monumental Awards, a program that recognizes projects and organizations driving growth across the Greater Indianapolis area.

“For nearly five decades, the Monumental Awards have celebrated excellence in architecture, construction, engineering, neighborhood development and placemaking throughout central Indiana,” a news release stated.

Arts Council adds board members, gallery space news@currentinfishers.com The Fishers Arts Council recently announced the addition of two new board members and new gallery spaces to feature more local artists.

Fabi Gonzalez and Esperanza Alonzo have joined the nonprofit’s board of directors, according to a news release. Gonzalez is a business owner, architect and concrete contractor with more than 15 years experience in commerGonzalez cial and residential construction.

“Raised in a family of artists and married to a cartoonist, she has been immersed in creativity her entire life, fostering a deep appreciation for the arts and their power to build vibrant communities,” the news release stated.

Alonzo, a native of Mexico from a creative family of 10, has lived in Indiana more than 20 years. She initially settled in Fishers before becoming a longtime Indianapolis resident.

“A dual-trained attorney, Alonzo earned her law degree from the University of Guadalajara and later graduated from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law,” the news release stated. “Deeply committed to her community, Alonzo is the founder of the Hispanic Cultural Hub, where she organizes monthly cultural events.

In addition to her legal and advocacy work, she is a talented artist known for her distinctive sequin artwork and original jewelry designs.”

FAC’s board also includes President Chris Hayes, Vice President Erica Foreman, Treasurer Amanda Wilhite, Secretary Ross Hilleary and board members Susan Dickey, Greg Dierfeldt, Tyna Green Seall, Olivia Harris, Molly Ham-

mer and Latrica Schooley. Pat Grabill is Board Emeritus and Les Reinhardt is the nonprofit’s executive director.

One of the new gallery spaces is the result of a partnership between FAC and Build BW, 11 Municipal Dr. “Missy Lowstetter of Build BW reached out to us in 2025 about the possibilities of art inside their building,” Reinhardt stated.

“It came at a perfect time as our longtime partners at the Hamilton County Community Alonzo Foundation were selling their building, which meant our FAC Hub Gallery needed a new home. Having an accessible space is important to us, not only for artists, but also for the public. Being able to come after work or on the weekends to see an art gallery isn’t always an option, but the Build BW Gallery makes that possible.”

The first-floor gallery is open daily and currently features the work of Casey Williams of McCordsville.

Ball State Fishers Center is another new gallery space for FAC, named the Ball State Gallery-Fishers. Its first exhibit is “Summer Shine.”

“This exhibit always brings out the best florals, bright colors, and joy — and a number of artists new to FAC want to be involved because of the excitement around Ball State Fishers Center being a new space for art,” Reinhardt stated.

Commission OKs proposed Buckhaven PUD

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com A new development on about 11.5 acres off 131st Street in Fishers received a favorable recommendation Aug. 5 after a review by the Fishers Plan Commission.

The proposed Buckhaven Planned Unit Development at 11798 and 11842 E. 131st St. would have 23 single-family homes. The PUD was introduced to the Fishers City Council in May. Planning Director Ross Hilleary told the Plan Commission that developer Pulte Homes hosted a neighborhood meeting in June. The plans call for homes with side-loading garages, a retention pond, an active open space and 10-foot buffers between the new neighborhood and nearby existing homes.

Rex Ramage of Pulte Homes said architectural designs for the neighborhood are relatively new to the market area.

Nobody spoke during a public hearing on the PUD request. Ramage said that during the neighborhood meeting in June, the few people who attended primarily wondered about buffers and when construction would take place.

“We do have common area strips around all perimeters so that we can save the existing vegetation to the extent that it’s not dead, dying, diseased or invasive,” he said. “We will want to keep all the existing trees as much (as possible). We will supplement that existing tree line to make sure that there’s a minimum number of trees … along all the perimeters.”

He said construction likely would start in spring 2027, with completion tentatively set for 2029. The homes are expected to cost between $600,000 and $700,000.

Meijer announced that it will open its new 75,000-square-foot grocery store in Fishers Sept. 30.

The new location at 15700 Southeastern Pkwy., will be the second Meijer Grocery concept in Indiana and the retailer’s 45th store in the state, according to a news release. The smaller concept focuses on groceries.

“We’re excited to open our second Meijer Grocery location in Indiana, continuing to bring this convenient format to more communities to help customers quickly find fresh foods and everyday essentials at consistently low prices,” stated Jess Murray, vice president of the Indiana region. “These stores are designed to provide customers with a great shopping experience, right in the communities where they live and work each day.”

Goalkeeper right fit for CHS boys soccer player

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel High School senior Gray Morgan started as a goalkeeper in soccer for a specific reason.

“When I was younger, I hated the conditioning,” he said. “I always thought the goalies didn’t have to do the conditioning, and when I was 8 or 9, I didn’t want to do the conditioning, so I was the goalkeeper. I just stuck with it. I felt I was kind of decent at it.”

Indeed, he has been.

Morgan had 15 shutouts last season in helping the Greyhounds win their first state title in boys soccer since 2006. CHS (18-1-3) topped West Lafayette Harrison 3-1 in the Class 3A championship match.

Morgan shared time as goalkeeper as a sophomore and took over as the only starter as a junior.

“He’s a natural leader and he’s stepped up to take more of a leadership role that kind of transcends across his game,” Greyhounds coach Shane Schmidt said. “He works with our goalkeeper coach Henry Geisel, and I think he’s improved a bunch over the last sea-

“Gray looks for ways to get better, and it shows,” Schmidt said.

The 6-foot-2 Morgan said he would love to top the 15 shutouts he tallied last season.

“It’s going to be an uphill battle because we have a lot of new defenders, but I’m confident in our back line and confident in myself,” he said. “I always

tell myself to control what you can control and save what you can save. You’re never going to save that top corner screamer from 40 yards out, but as long as I can stop the balls that are right at me and do it successfully, I have a pretty good chance to break that.”

Morgan said it was special to get Schmidt his first state championship in 19 seasons as Carmel’s head coach. He was the varsity assistant when the Greyhounds won in 2006.

“Coach Schmidt is such a good coach,” Morgan said. “He knows what he’s doing. He’s playing at the highest level, so he knows what it takes as a player. At the same time, he’s been the varsity coach for so long, he knows what it takes to motivate a team. He knows what is effective and how to run his training sessions.”

Morgan said he is still looking at options to play collegiately if he can find the right fit. He plans to major in business and then attend law school to become a corporate lawyer.

Hamilton County law enforcement recognized news@currentnoblesville.com The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office honored three members of the county’s law enforcement community Aug. 4 during its annual Officer of the Year Awards, recognizing service in patrol, investigations and community engagement.

The awards were presented to Patrol Officer Ezekiel McCarthy of the Westfield Police Department; Detective Michael Morley of the Carmel Police Department; and K-9 Luna and her handler, Sgt. Ben Lugar, of the Noblesville Police Department.

LIV GOLF LIVES ON news@youarecurrent.com LIV Golf has secured funding from an outside investor to keep the circuit alive beyond this season.

ESPN reported Aug. 5 that league CEO Scott O’Neil didn’t identify the investor or how much money will be injected into the league, but said terms should be finalized soon, with the transaction to be closed in September.

O’Neill stated that there is interest from additional parties to serve as minority investors. ESPN reported that the league needs $250 to $300 million after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced in April that it would no longer finance it.

The league has planned 10 events in 2027, including five team “majors” at international sites such as Australia, South Africa, England, Hong Kong and Mexico.

The future schedule will also include five team “signature events” in the United States. The league’s website doesn’t indicate where the U.S. events will take place.

After the league’s Aug. 20-23 tournament in Westfield, it’s scheduled to play Aug. 27-30 in Michigan. There have been questions about whether the Michigan event will take place, but the website is still selling tickets.

Grissom Air Show set for Aug. 29-30

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Those who attend and enjoy the Grissom Air & Space Expo later this month can thank a Zionsville resident.

Maj. Joni Friar, who serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, is the air show director for the Aug. 29-30 event at Grissom Air Reserve Base near Peru and Bunker Hill.

Friar, who lives in Zionsville, has been on orders for the last three years with the Air Force, serving as the wing executive officer at Grissom. She added the title of air show director in December 2025 because of her experience with aviation. When she was in the Air Force, she was a drone pilot, operating the RQ-4 Global Hawk, a high-altitude surveillance aircraft.

As air show director, Friar is in charge of coordinating and scheduling the event and working with the base’s many partners to ensure the experience is enjoyable for spectators. And perhaps more importantly, making sure there are enough restroom facilities, she joked. A previous air show at Grissom did not have enough.

The Thunderbirds, an Air Force demonstration unit, are the highlight of the show. They are known for their flight formations and solos.

“If you’ve never seen the Thunderbirds, (they) are unmatched,” Friar said. “Everytime I’ve (seen them), ‘I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is amazing.’”

The Thunderbirds will perform at 4 p.m. both days.

team.

“We really hit the lottery with them,” Friar said.

Admission and parking are free.

There will be food vendors and kids activities. Roots in Blue, a music group with the Air Force’s Band of Mid-America, will perform.

On display will be a variety of aircraft, including the KC-135 Stratotanker — Grissom is known for the 434th Air Refueling Wing — along with one of the only B-29s that still fly and a C-5 Super Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the Air Force.

“Aviation enthusiasts are going to love this if they’re in the Indy area,” Friar said.

Friar was working at a law firm immediately after college when she thought about what she wanted to do with her life. A friend recommended enlisting in the Air Force. She had her sights set on being a pilot but was 0.2 inches too short, so she became a drone pilot instead.

“I’m very lucky in my path,” Friar said.

Friar’s on-orders time will conclude later this fall. She’ll then go back to being “Civilian Joni” and her regular job with Northrop Grumman — training NATO pilots on the RQ-4 drone. She’ll spend two months in Sicily, her seventh trip doing so.

FLOWERING SUCCESS 101-year-old Fishers resident stays active, healthy with her garden

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com At nearly 101, Fishers resident Helen Nelson has grown the tallest sunflower yet in her raised garden bed at Northridge Senior Living.

Nelson turns 101 Sept. 1, and although she’s lived in Fishers for about five years, she and her late husband were Indiana residents for much longer — first in Fort Wayne and then in Cicero.

She grew up far from the American Midwest, however.

“I was born in Saskatchewan, Canada,” she said. “I was born there, 1925, Sept. 1, and I lived there till I was 19.”

Nelson’s family had a farm in Saskatchewan— a western province in between Alberta and Manitoba, bordering the U.S. states of Montana and North Dakota. Thinking back on her youth, she recalled that in the winter, they traveled by “cutter,” which is a type of sleigh.

“In the summer when it was warm, we walked 4 miles to school,” she said.

“It wasn’t unusual for a lot of kids to walk, because they used the horses on the farm. We didn’t have any toys at all.

I think we had a doll someone gave us, but she always sat on the shelf. She was to look at. So, we played with games and sticks and stones and made … mud pies (and) decorated them with stones.”

Nelson remembered one time playing hide-and-seek with her cousins and the cousin who was “it” disappeared while everyone else was hiding. After it got dark, they went looking for her and discovered the cousin had decided to go to bed and didn’t tell anyone.

Nelson taught elementary school in Saskatchewan for a few years and then taught in Vancouver, British Columbia.

While there, she took a trip to visit a cousin in neighboring Washington state.

“There, I met my husband and he was from Indiana,” she said, which is how Nelson became a Hoosier so long ago that she can’t remember the date. “We have five children — three girls and two boys.”

The family lived in the Fort Wayne area until Nelson retired, which is

when she and her husband moved to Cicero. She moved to Northridge about five years ago — after her husband died — and that’s when she discovered her green thumb.

Nelson said she grew a few flowers in pots before, but the soil at their home wasn’t that great and for many years, she was busy working. The raised beds at the senior community have healthy

soil, she said, and she has the time to dedicate to her plants, which include tomatoes as well as sunflowers.

“I thought they’d be pretty once they bloomed,” she said of why she chose sunflowers. “I didn’t expect them to be this tall.”

The tallest one hasn’t been measured, but Nelson’s fellow resident Marleen Foley estimated it to be at least 10 feet.

While they were talking in a shaded area near the garden beds, the center’s hairdresser, Rhonda Wright, walked up with a handful of ripe tomatoes from another garden bed. The two residents stopped her to admire the produce.

“We try to offer our community some of the vegetables,” Foley said, explaining that the produce is used in the center’s kitchen. “We’ve had cucumbers.

We’ve had a lot of tomatoes. We have more tomatoes this year than we’ve ever had.”

Nelson’s tomatoes also contribute to that bounty. She said that in addition to tending her raised garden bed, she keeps busy with games — hand and foot, euchre and beanbag baseball, a variation on cornhole. Although Nelson attributed her longevity to luck, Wright said she believes staying active is part of what’s kept Nelson healthy.

“She exercises. She eats well. She does many activities,” Wright said. “She participates in my beanbag baseball game every week and she scores good — even home runs, sometimes.”

Penny and Mike Lade are the live-in managers at Northridge. Penny said Nelson’s 100th birthday celebration in 2025 was a big party, with many friends and family members attending. Plans are in the works for marking 101.

“Helen has just been a blessing to have here,” Penny Lade said, adding that she had just gone outside that morning to check on the sunflower. “I was shocked.”

Moroccan-born chef blends cultures at Niku Kitchen

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Aziz Mountassar had master’s degrees in political science and economics when he first linked up with the top chefs in France. His first dish would take him in an entirely different direction.

“When I saw the smile on the people’s face, I said, ‘That’s what I want to do,’” Mountassar said.

Today, he’s Chef Aziz at Niku Kitchen & Sushi Bar, an upscale Japanese restaurant at The Farm in Zionsville.

Niku, which is Japanese for meat, has a menu that blends Japanese cuisine with other cultures. The restaurant opened at the end of May. For example, the marinated sea bass with miso butter includes a microgreen salad with citrus for a dish that combines Japanese and Mediterranean cuisine. Mountassar, who was born in Casablanca, Morocco, and grew up in France, said he wants to introduce people to new cultures when they visit Niku.

“My job in the world is to mix cultures,” he said. “If people can meet, what about ingredients?”

Mountassar, who lives in Carmel and speaks eight languages, is well-traveled. He cooked at Michelin Star restaurants in France, Italy and Spain before moving to the U.S. He attended Institut Paul Bocuse in Lyon, France. Typically reserved for the wealthy and well-connected, a chef supported Mountassar so he could attend the culinary school.

Mountassar regards himself as a sort of psychology doctor when it comes to food.

“My medicine is whatever I put on the plate,” he said. “Whatever I give you should make you feel better.”

Niku also offers one of the only omakase experiences in the Indianapolis region. Omakase is a Japanese dining experience where customers do not order from a menu, rather the chef chooses selections based on their preferences. Customers who opt for omakase, which translates to “I’ll leave it up to you,” have the food prepared at their table and can choose from nigiri or sashimi sushi.

Presentation and atmosphere is an important part of Mountassar’s craft.

“My goal is (for you to) remember the last bite,” he said.

Mountassar previously managed the kitchen at Anthony’s Chophouse in Carmel, worked at the Capital Grille in Indianapolis and opened Marrakesh Moroccan Cuisine & Bar at 49th Street and College Avenue. He was brought in as a consultant and ended up sticking around.

“This is what I call the baby,” he said.

Mountassar said he wants to put Niku on the map. Other locations are being considered, including in Fishers.

Hospitality is an important part of Moroccan and Japanese cultures.

Mountassar said in his home country it is commonplace for people to offer one a place to stay if needed. In Japan, hospitality is called omotenashi, where care of guests is emphasized and based on Japanese tea ceremonies.

It ties nicely into Mountassar’s approach for his kitchen and Niku’s dining experience.

“If I can mix the cultures, I can mix the flavors,” he said.

When Lexi Lewis’ mother Marcy broke a hip, Lewis assumed there was an app to aid her recovery, one that had some exercises for older women diagnosed with osteoporosis.

“That’s when we found a gap,” Lewis said.

Lewis, a Zionsville native who lives in North Carolina, worked with Bettye Ellison, a Zionsville exercise physiologist to develop an app. Along with co-founder Ben Wesorick, a medical student in North Carolina, they launched Bone-IQ, a subscription-based app geared for people with osteoporosis.

The workout-based app is meant to be an easy entry level to build strength.

Users fill out a quick intake form, and the app develops an exercise program based on one’s answers. Questions ask users about their ability to do pushups, squats, deadlifts and at what intensity, as well as any health issues and injuries.

“It can be extremely daunting (to start exercising),” Lewis said. “The app is built to meet the user where they’re at and progress as they go on.”

Osteoporosis is a lack of bone density and often affects older adults. It leads to weaker bones and is the most common reason for fractures in elderly people.

It is especially prevalent in women over 50. About 20 percent of women in that age group will be diagnosed with osteoporosis. Bone density decreases in older women after menopause because of a lack of estrogen.

Lewis said a diagnosis often comes after a fall and fracture.

“They call osteoporosis a silent disease,” she said.

That’s how her mom, Marcy Lewis, learned she had osteoporosis. She fell while on her horse farm.

“I think it was a blessing in disguise,” Lexi Lewis said. “She wouldn’t have known otherwise.”

Squats, deadlifts, pushups and their variations are common exercises on Bone-IQ. Workouts can be modified if they are too easy or too hard. Lewis said the compound movements improve bone density.

“One of the most important things in your bone density … is doing progressive overload,” Lewis said.

This is known as Wolff’s law which states a healthy bone will adapt to the loads placed on it. Simply, bones become stronger to resist heavier loads.

Each exercise includes a video demonstration by Ellison. She designed the workouts.

“We’ve heard real positive feedback that everyone really loves Bettye,” Lewis said.

Lewis and her team also partnered with physicians, endocrinologists and nutritionists while developing the app.

Bone IQ launched earlier this year and is available in both the App Store and on Google Play. Users get a twoweek free trial. Bone-IQ costs $19 a month or $99 for a year.

Artomobilia to feature Lane Museum cars

“The ones that are raising the most eyebrows are the Jeff Lane Motor Museum cars,” said John Leonard, Artomobilia’s co-founder and director. “We’re going to bring those into the Arts & Design District under their own power, so people see these things move around. You can go down to Nashville (Tenn.) and see them in a museum but you don’t hear them, you don’t see them move. That’s a unique attribute of what we’ll bring this year.”

When Artomobilia — an automotive design festival and car show — starts at 11 a.m. Aug. 29 in downtown Carmel, the cars will drive into their position in front of the 1933 Lounge on Range Line Road.

“That will be something to see these crazy cars drive down the road,” Leonard said. “These cars will be the last ones into their spots.”

There will be six vehicles from Lane Motor Museum: • 1932 Helicron: A one-of-a-kind, propeller-driven French car found in a barn in 2000, still road-legal in France, and pushed along by a propeller spinning at its nose.

Leonard said he met Jeff Lane in September 2025 when comedian and car enthusiast Jay Leno appeared at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “(Lane) is a walking encyclopedia on all the cars nobody knows anything about,” Leonard said. “There are all kinds of guys who are experts on Camaros and Corvettes, Lamborghinis and Ferraris. Jeff is an expert on all the cars that are right on the fringe.”

Leonard said 530 cars are registered entrants along with 40 or more that are sponsored and partner cars. The event started with 40 cars in 2008.

“We’ve gotten more space in Carmel’s Midtown,” he said. “We’ve gone much farther south on Elm (Street) than we normally have.”

There are more than 25 collector car classes on display. In addition, there

will be select vehicles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Putnam Park Road Course on display.

Leonard said an estimated 20,000 visitors attend the free event, which ends at 5 p.m.

“Carmel has benefited and Artomobilia has benefited from the fact they do so many events that gives people an opportunity to see downtown Carmel,” Leonard said. “For the last 19 years, we have been giving a certain demographic a great reason to check out Carmel and come back.”

Carmel resident Joe Molina, who has a long career in automotive public relations, has joined Artomobilia as an adviser.

During Artomobilia, Carmel on Canvas, a plein air paint-out exhibition and contest will be featured, It will start Aug. 28.

FHS choir joins Foreigner

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The Fishers High School Chamber Choir spent a memorable evening at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville.

The school’s 18-member advanced small concert choir joined Foreigner Aug. 7 to sing the chorus of “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Fishers High School Choir Director Scott Archer said the school got the opportunity after a local radio station reached out to the program.

“It was such an incredible beginning of the school year opportunity,” Archer said. “To have this be these kids’ first experience of the school year helps inspire all of us to have a fantastic year.

The Foreigner guys made it so easy to jump right in. It’s an honor that Fishers got to be a part of it.”

Foreigner lead singer Luis Maldonado told the crowd that the band includes local high school programs at every concert because it wants to encourage funding for music education programs,

which have suffered cuts across the nation for the past several years.

“It was inspiring to hear Foreigner talk about the value of arts in our school,” senior choir member Addie Clark said. “It’s like all of the hard work we do is seen.”

Senior Nya Beck said it was a fun outing for the choir members.

“It helps start the year off with a special memory,” she said.

FHS Choir Director Laney De Luna agreed.

“It was so incredible to see the gigantic crowd,” De Luna said.

Choir members watched the concert from the lawn seats before joining the band for the encore.

“Being able to watch a professional rock band and their stage presence to captivate an entire amphitheater will help shape the group’s future performances,” Archer said.

Maldonado thanked the crowd for applauding the choir and helping give them a memory of a lifetime.

It was the Noblesville-based singer-songwriter’s first time visiting New York City, and she wanted to wear high heels as she walked through Times Square. After a while, she couldn’t stand wearing them any longer, so she took them off and explored the city while feeling the cement under her bare feet.

The experience inspired her latest single, “Barefoot in Times Square,” which is scheduled to come out Aug. 14.

That single, along with her July release “Poisoned Message in a Bottle,” will appear on her upcoming full-length album “Between Places.” Ray, who was born and raised in Germany before moving to central Indiana, hopes the album will come out by the end of the year.

Ray, 24, and her music partner Sean Noel are performing four or more times per week across Indianapolis and the northern suburbs to raise money for the album. They also have a GoFundMe collecting donations to make the album a reality.

Ray said it feels weird to ask for money but noted there are many hidden costs to releasing an album.

“We don’t just write the song or put it out,” Ray said. “There’s a lot of marketing happening, a lot of music video content creation. If (people) contribute to it, they help make the art that wouldn’t exist otherwise.”

Noel, who performs with Ray in the duo Beauty and the Beats, said the recording process at Round Table Recording Co. in Broad Ripple has been rewarding.

“The recording process has been an incredible journey because you get to hear these songs evolve from an idea we created into something real,” Noel said via email. “What makes it especially meaningful is knowing that the music is being created for people to connect with, not just to sit on our hard drives.”

Most of Ray’s output has leaned toward country in recent years, but her newest releases are pop songs. She and Noel have explored various sounds and find that pop might suit her best.

like pop just sums it up all together,” Ray said. “It has influences of everything and especially international pop.

I love to sing in different languages.”

Ray’s music is constantly shifting, both in genre and in language. She said her debut album is about times of transition. As someone who has moved from Germany to the United States and who has experimented with different genres, Ray speaks from experience when she writes about being between places.

“Sometimes you’re between relationships, between dreams, between who you were and who you’re becoming,” Ray said. “And sometimes you haven’t figured it out yet, and that’s OK. This album is not about having all the answers. It’s about figuring out where you belong, and if that takes time, that’s OK.” Ray is taking her time, too. She’s trying to make sure the album is the best it can be. She’s also taking her music career as it comes. She thought about heading to Nashville at some point in her career, but said she has felt immense support from the Indianapolis area music community and she’s happy where she is now.

She is ready to follow that path wherever it leads her — whether she’s in heels or making the journey barefoot.
