Man shot by police to be charged; officers’ actions cleared

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The two Carmel police officers who shot an 18-year-old man Aug. 6 along southbound U.S. 31 will not face criminal charges. The man, who reportedly pointed a rifle at the officers before the shooting, will be charged.

That’s according to Hamilton County Prosecutor Joshua Kocher, who did not know when charges will be filed. He said Aug. 13 the Indiana State Police are still investigating the incident and had not yet submitted a completed report to the prosecutor’s office.

“Based on the information available to us at this time, however, we have seen sufficient evidence to determine that criminal charges will be filed against the driver involved in the shooting,” Kocher said. “We have also reviewed the circumstances surrounding the officers’ use of force and have determined that the Carmel officers involved acted lawfully.”

Two officers discharged their weapons during the incident and were uninjured, according to ISP Sgt. John Perrine. The man was taken to the hospital in stable but critical condition. Police have not named the man.

No one else was injured.

“The suspect was alone,” Carmel Police Department Chief Drake Sterling said at an Aug. 6 press conference.

“There are no other suspects at large.”

suspect saying he was having suicidal thoughts. After Carmel police officers located the man’s silver pickup truck on the southbound shoulder of U.S. 31, he reportedly stepped out and aimed the rifle at them.

“Both officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect,” Perrine said. “That suspect went to the ground.

As soon as safely possible, those officers immediately switched modes, and they went from protecting themselves, trying to save their own lives, to now

trying to save his life.”

U.S. 31 was closed Aug. 6 between Main and 116th streets for several hours as the initial investigation continued.

“We only get one shot at this so it’s really important as we go through this scene we answer all the questions we have,” Perrine said.

ISP is investigating the incident, per CPD protocol when a police officer is involved in a shooting. Perrine did not respond to an Aug. 12 request for updated information before press time.

Budget workshops to be replaced by videos

The proposed budget will be introduced at the Oct. 5 city council meeting, which also will include a public hearing. The council is expected to vote on the budget Oct. 19.

Carmel City Council President Matt Snyder said the new system will “create a lot of work” for city employees drafting answers to every question, but he is willing Snyder to give it a try.

“The benefit of the budget hearings is that it’s live and we get human responses, not well-crafted wordsmithing,” Snyder said. “We get actual answers.”

City spokesperson Erin Murphy told Current that the new format will “provide the public and city council earlier, around-the-clock and on-demand accessibility.”

“This approach will provide the community with a more comprehensive and thorough understanding of the budget, available for viewing at their convenience,” Murphy said.

Members of the public may also submit emailed questions about the proposed budget. The city plans to post a “detailed FAQ” daily, Murphy said.

MI Homes of Indiana has filed plans with the City of Carmel to build the Clayshire Planned Unit Development on 37 acres on three large residential lots. Carmel-based architecture firm Studio M is designing the homes, which are expected to sell for $900,000 to $1.3 million.

Clayshire is proposed to include two outdoor gathering areas, with one featuring a fire pit and the other a gazebo. The PUD, which sets development standards specific to the site, requires at least 20 percent of the neighborhood to be open space or common areas.

The Carmel Plan Commission will review the proposal before sending it to the Carmel City Council for a vote.

Public hearing set on development laws, proposals

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel Plan Commission will hold a public hearing to gather feedback on a variety of housing issues, per state law.

The hearing will take place at a meeting set for 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at Carmel City Hall, 1 Civic Square.

Indiana House Enrolled Act 1001 requires Hoosier municipalities to hold a public hearing on development and zoning matters by the end of the year.

The law requires cities to review their local ordinances to determine how they could be updated to streamline and encourage housing development.

The law requires cities to consider nine factors. They include: • Providing for higher-density development of duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes • Adaptive reuse of commercial buildings for residential use • Waiving or eliminating some regulations, such as garage size, off-street parking, property heights and certain design standards • Streamlining or shortening development processes and timelines • Donating vacant land for affordable housing development The commission will not vote or take action on any proposals or suggestions at the meeting. If the city decides to amend its development ordinance, action will be taken through future public hearings and meetings.

Those unable to attend the public hearing may submit written comments to plan commission secretary Bric Butler at bbutler@carmel.in.gov.

In recent years, Carmel has been reviewing its Unified Development Ordinance and formed a committee to focus on housing, which led city officials to express frustration in April with HEA1001 mandates they felt they had already been doing.

Carmel has already felt substantial impact from HEA1001, as the law voided its cap on rental properties and essentially canceled the city’s short-term rental regulations.

The city is required to submit a detailed housing progress report to the state by Jan. 1, 2027.

Court orders Apple to give phone access

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com A Boone County judge has ordered technology company Apple to give former NBA player Josh McRoberts of Carmel access to his deceased grandmother’s phone in a property dispute case.

Pennington, 86, died May 6. Her property at 6810 Ford Rd. and belongings are at the center of a series of lawsuits between McRoberts, his mother Jennifer McRoberts and Zionsville Town Councilor Sarah Sampson and her husband Jon. The McRoberts family accused the Sampsons of taking advantage of Pennington and coercing her to sign over her property to them days before she died. The Sampsons and Pennington were neighbors.

McRoberts, 39, was a standout basketball player at Carmel High School and Duke University who spent 11 seasons in the NBA, including three with the Indiana Pacers.

A preliminary injunction was granted in June giving Josh McRoberts ownership of his grandmother’s property.

Kincaid ruled a 2025 revocable trust making McRoberts the trustee of her estate overruled the documents Pennington signed granting the Sampsons ownership. The judge stated the latter documents were not valid because Pennington was not sound of mind and the Sampsons took advantage of her.

The judge’s order included all of Pennington’s belongings; however, the Sampsons argued for her phone to be forensically examined. Text messages included in court filings allegedly show a strained relationship between Pennington and her family.

A legal filing by Curtis Shirley, legal counsel for the McRoberts family, accused the Sampsons of delay tactics in withholding the phone. The phone’s password had allegedly been changed when McRoberts finally gained possession of it, which prompted the request

to have Apple grant access.

“When ultimately delivering the phone, the password had been changed so it was dead on arrival,” Shirley stated. “Instead of sharing the password so the Personal Representative could gain access to estate property, the Sampsons instead filed a motion regarding disclosure of the passcode, which is, shocker, another delay tactic.”

Kincaid struck down a motion from the Sampsons that asked the court to rescind the order.

Shirley argued since the Sampsons were able to include text messages from Pennington in court filings, they had access to the phone and could have changed the password and sent the texts themselves.

The cases are ongoing and a number of motions are under consideration.

Taft, the law firm representing the Sampsons, declined to comment. Shirley did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Burrell played football and basketball at CHS and was a member of the school’s first state championship basketball team. Burrell, a wide receiver, joined CHS teammate and quarterback Mark Herrmann on Purdue University’s football team. Burrell, who has had heart and liver transplants, co-wrote a book called “Bart’s Heart: A Journey of Family, Friendship, Football and Faith.” Following his talk, there will be a Q&A and book signing.

Grissom Air Show set for Aug. 29-30

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Those who attend and enjoy the Grissom Air & Space Expo later this month can thank a Zionsville resident.

Maj. Joni Friar, who serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, is the air show director for the Aug. 29-30 event at Grissom Air Reserve Base near Peru and Bunker Hill.

Friar, who lives in Zionsville, has been on orders for the last three years with the Air Force, serving as the wing executive officer at Grissom. She added the title of air show director in December 2025 because of her experience with aviation. When she was in the Air Force, she was a drone pilot, operating the RQ-4 Global Hawk, a high-altitude surveillance aircraft.

As air show director, Friar is in charge of coordinating and scheduling the event and working with the base’s many partners to ensure the experience is enjoyable for spectators. And perhaps more importantly, making sure there are enough restroom facilities, she joked. A previous air show at Grissom did not have enough.

The Thunderbirds, an Air Force demonstration unit, are the highlight of the show. They are known for their flight formations and solos.

“If you’ve never seen the Thunderbirds, (they) are unmatched,” Friar said. “Everytime I’ve (seen them), ‘I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is amazing.’”

The Thunderbirds will perform at 4 p.m. both days.

“We really hit the lottery with them,” Friar said.

Admission and parking are free.

There will be food vendors and kids activities. Roots in Blue, a music group with the Air Force’s Band of Mid-America, will perform.

On display will be a variety of aircraft, including the KC-135 Stratotanker — Grissom is known for the 434th Air Refueling Wing — along with one of the only B-29s that still flies and a C-5 Super Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the Air Force.

“Aviation enthusiasts are going to love this if they’re in the Indy area,” Friar said.

Friar was working at a law firm immediately after college when she thought about what she wanted to do with her life. A friend recommended enlisting in the Air Force. She had her sights set on being a pilot but was 0.2 inches too short, so she became a drone pilot instead.

“I’m very lucky in my path,” Friar said.

Friar’s on-orders time will conclude later this fall. She’ll then go back to being “Civilian Joni” and her regular job with Northrop Grumman — training NATO pilots on the RQ-4 drone. She’ll spend two months in Sicily, her seventh trip doing so.

A free community event, including a meet-and-greet with Thunderbirds crews, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Grissom Air Museum.

“I just want people to show up to this thing,” Friar said.

Goalkeeper right fit for CHS boys soccer player

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel High School senior Gray Morgan started as a goalkeeper in soccer for a specific reason.

“When I was younger, I hated the conditioning,” he said. “I always thought the goalies didn’t have to do the conditioning, and when I was 8 or 9, I didn’t want to do the conditioning, so I was the goalkeeper. I just stuck with it. I felt I was kind of decent at it.”

Indeed, he has been.

Morgan had 15 shutouts last season in helping the Greyhounds win their first state title in boys soccer since 2006. CHS (18-1-3) topped West Lafayette Harrison 3-1 in the Class 3A championship match.

Morgan shared time as goalkeeper as a sophomore and took over as the only starter as a junior.

“He’s a natural leader and he’s stepped up to take more of a leadership role that kind of transcends across his game,” Greyhounds coach Shane Schmidt said. “He works with our goalkeeper coach Henry Geisel, and I think he’s improved a bunch over the last sea-

“Gray looks for ways to get better, and it shows,” Schmidt said.

The 6-foot-2 Morgan said he would love to top the 15 shutouts he tallied last season.

“It’s going to be an uphill battle because we have a lot of new defenders, but I’m confident in our back line and confident in myself,” he said. “I always

tell myself to control what you can control and save what you can save. You’re never going to save that top corner screamer from 40 yards out, but as long as I can stop the balls that are right at me and do it successfully, I have a pretty good chance to break that.”

Morgan said it was special to get Schmidt his first state championship in 19 seasons as Carmel’s head coach. He was the varsity assistant when the Greyhounds won in 2006.

“Coach Schmidt is such a good coach,” Morgan said. “He knows what he’s doing. He’s playing at the highest level, so he knows what it takes as a player. At the same time, he’s been the varsity coach for so long, he knows what it takes to motivate a team. He knows what is effective and how to run his training sessions.”

Morgan said he is still looking at options to play collegiately if he can find the right fit. He plans to major in business and then attend law school to become a corporate lawyer.

Former mayor: ‘Team effort’ helped build Carmel Compiled by Piper Bailey and Ann Marie Shambaugh Piper@youarecurrent.com AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Dottie Hancock served as mayor of Carmel from 1988 to 1991, a time of significant growth and development in the city. Prior to that, she served as the city’s clerk-treasurer for eight years.

Now a Noblesville resident, Hancock answered several questions from Current about her time in office and how the city has changed.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE CARMEL AT THE TIME YOU BECAME MAYOR? It was one of the fastest-growing places in the nation, and Hamilton County was growing.

WHAT WERE YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS MAYOR? It wasn’t one of the sexiest things I did, but the storm sewers in the old town were crumbling, and every time it rained, their basements filled up, so we fixed that. The thing that I am most proud of is the fact that we had no parks department, and I felt that that was a quality-of-life (issue) in any town or city, and so we created the parks department, and I’m really proud of what’s going on there now, so far as parks are concerned. (We) started the conversation on expanding the Monon Trail into Carmel.

WHAT ARE SOME MEMORABLE EVENTS THAT HAPPENED DURING YOUR TERM? We built the police station and City Hall while I was mayor and started CarmelFest. We were a team when we had a department head meeting. It was a conversation, and it was all of us. I think a lot of the good things that happened in Carmel was a team effort.

HOW DID CARMEL CHANGE DURING YOUR TIME IN OFFICE? I really don’t know, population-wise, how much it grew during those four years, but one of the things that came up that nobody seemed to think about was the fact that people were building (homes) everywhere, and all of a sudden there wasn’t enough water pressure. We had to buy water from Westfield until

we got the (water) tower, and that’s how the tower at 146th Street became reality.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN CARMEL? The people. Not everybody was friendly, but 99.9 percent of the people were, and everybody was willing to work together. When I took office, it was an easy transition. I knew who I wanted for department heads, because I’d worked with all those people for eight years (as clerk treasurer), and that was a real good place to be, because you knew who had their heart in Carmel and wanted to bring it together and make it grow so that it was a place that was growing rapidly, but not out of hand.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE CARMEL TODAY? Carmel is almost more metropolitan than it is the small city that it was, but it was growing rapidly. The growth has been conscientious, and it’s been thought out, and it’s a beautiful place — as well as a friendly place – to be.

Orchestra helped launch string program at CHS Commentary by Charles Conrad One of the stated reasons for beginning the Carmel Symphony Orchestra was to encourage the founding of a string program in Carmel Clay Schools.

Alice Stahl was a chemistry teacher at Carmel High School who had lobbied for a string program with the school board for years unsuccessfully. The music department chair at the time was band director Ben Loveall, and he discouraged consideration of beginning the string program, believing that the band would suffer. At some point, the decision was made that the school system had grown enough during the 1970s that it would be able to support both band and orchestra.

The first conductor was let go after just a couple of concerts. Jim Edington, the concertmaster, was named acting conductor. I became the principal trumpet and assistant conductor.

I remember well the first time the CSO performed at CarmelFest (I don’t recall if that name had been chosen yet) in the parking lot of Carmel Junior High School (now Carmel Middle School). I believe it was July 4, 1977, but it may have been 1978. The orchestra was set up outside the northeast end of the school building. I was conducting because Jim was needed for the whole performance as concertmaster.

The big finale was, of course, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, which was followed by fireworks. The big surprise was that we had the brass section of the CHS Marching Band and several sets of chimes (borrowed from several local schools) hidden out of audience sight on

the roof of the school. At the big finale they moved forward and joined the orchestra in an impressive ending.

The “technology” used in the pre-cell phone era was interesting. We had a guy sitting in his car in the parking lot facing west. On my signal he turned on his headlights. About a block away was another car facing north who then relayed the message to the fireworks crew. There may have been more cars that participated in this method, which worked great, and the fireworks appeared right at the appropriate moment in the piece.

Violinist Ann Manship and cellist Jan Brill recently retired. They were founding members of the CSO and were the final original members performing in recent years. They volunteered to do all sorts of jobs for the CSO and had a major impact on the ensemble for half a century.

LIV GOLF LIVES ON news@youarecurrent.com LIV Golf has secured funding from an outside investor to keep the circuit alive beyond this season.

ESPN reported Aug. 5 that league CEO Scott O’Neil didn’t identify the investor or how much money will be injected into the league, but said terms should be finalized soon, with the transaction to be closed in September.

O’Neill stated that there is interest from additional parties to serve as minority investors. ESPN reported that the league needs $250 to $300 million after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced in April that it would no longer finance it.

The league has planned 10 events in 2027, including five team “majors” at international sites such as Australia, South Africa, England, Hong Kong and Mexico.

The future schedule will also include five team “signature events” in the United States. The league’s website doesn’t indicate where the U.S. events will take place.

After the league’s Aug. 20-23 tournament in Westfield, it’s scheduled to play Aug. 27-30 in Michigan. There have been questions about whether the Michigan event will take place, but the website is still selling tickets.

The Canadian couldn’t afford athletic gear, but a pair of donated running shoes helped launch his career as a middle-distance runner. He went on to set indoor and outdoor national records in the 800 meters and competed in the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

After a year of research, Adesara and fellow Carmel High School student athletes Lucas Bartlett, Daniel Chen and Quinn Sullivan launched the Kicks for Slicks Foundation, a nonprofit that collects and donates shoes to Hoosier students.

Since then, Kicks for Slicks has collected more than 120 pairs of shoes and donated more than 60 of them to students in need. Adesara, a senior at CHS, said the foundation’s goal is to donate 200 pairs of shoes by the end of the 2026-27 school year.

“What a lot of people might not realize about the need is that it’s not just kids who are already on the teams,” said Adesara, a member of the CHS boys cross country and track teams. “It’s kids who want to be on the teams but have the financial barrier that doesn’t allow them to be on the team. It’s just that initial push of giving them the shoes that a lot of people kind of overlook. It’s kids who need access to get into athletics.”

Kicks for Slicks primarily provides donations to students at schools in Indianapolis. Adesara shifted the nonprofit’s focus after finding a greater need for assistance there than in Carmel and other suburbs.

After reaching out to nearly 30 schools, Shortridge High School in Indianapolis was the first to accept donations from the foundation. George Washington High School and Arsenal Tech High School also have partnered with Kicks for Slicks.

Lorenze Billups, girls cross country coach at Arsenal Tech, said partnerships with groups like Kicks for Slicks have helped increase participation and build confidence.

“Once the kid has that opportunity and sees that there are people invested in them, it adds an extra layer of enthusiasm when it’s time to actually participate,” Billups said. “They know that they can participate at the same level and have access to support as other people.”

Most running shoes are usable for roughly 300 to 500 miles, Adesara said, although many runners replace them after about 250 miles. Lightly used shoes are what the foundation prefers to collect.

“I picked up a donation and the person donated about 25 shoes,” he said. “She said that she’d been collecting them for over five years. In those five years worth of shoes we only found two pairs that we felt weren’t proper to be donated.”

Adesara hopes to one day partner with local businesses and other nonprofits to expand Kicks for Slicks’ shoe collection. The foundation’s inventory is currently stored in his bedroom closet.

Kicks for Slicks wants to connect with additional schools that could benefit from donations. Adesara hopes to expand the foundation’s outreach throughout the state. “(The nonprofit) has definitely changed my under-

standing, given me (greater) empathy toward people and just changed my perspective on my daily life,” he said. “Knowing that I’m very blessed to be living where I am, it honestly just encourages me to keep doing more work. It encourages me to wake up every weekend and know that someone else’s future is worth my Saturday.”

Artomobilia to feature Lane Museum cars

“The ones that are raising the most eyebrows are the Jeff Lane Motor Museum cars,” said John Leonard, Artomobilia’s co-founder and director. “We’re going to bring those into the Arts & Design District under their own power, so people see these things move around. You can go down to Nashville (Tenn.) and see them in a museum but you don’t hear them, you don’t see them move. That’s a unique attribute of what we’ll bring this year.”

When Artomobilia — an automotive design festival and car show — starts at 11 a.m. Aug. 29 in downtown Carmel, the cars will drive into their position in front of the 1933 Lounge on Range Line Road.

“That will be something to see these crazy cars drive down the road,” Leonard said. “These cars will be the last ones into their spots.”

There will be six vehicles from Lane Motor Museum: • 1932 Helicron: A one-of-a-kind, propeller-driven French car found in a barn in 2000, still road-legal in France, and pushed along by a propeller spinning at its nose.

• 1959 Citroën ID 19: The elegant French saloon whose hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension and aerodynamic shape made it decades ahead of its time.

• 1964 Peel P-50 Replica: A nod to the Guinness-record smallest production car ever made, 54 inches long and around 130 pounds, with no reverse gear.

• 2013 Peel Trident Replica: The bubble-topped, clear-domed twoseat sibling of the P50, a microcar that looks straight out of a 1960s space cartoon.

“The cars have left the museum for some other big car shows, but they don’t usually take six cars anywhere,” Leonard said.

Leonard said he met Jeff Lane in September 2025 when comedian and car enthusiast Jay Leno appeared at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “(Lane) is a walking encyclopedia on all the cars nobody knows anything about,” Leonard said. “There are all kinds of guys who are experts on Camaros and Corvettes, Lamborghinis and Ferraris. Jeff is an expert on all the cars that are right on the fringe.”

Leonard said 530 cars are registered entrants along with 40 or more that are sponsored and partner cars. The event started with 40 cars in 2008.

“We’ve gotten more space in Carmel’s Midtown,” he said. “We’ve gone much farther south on Elm (Street) than we normally have.”

There are more than 25 collector car classes on display. In addition, there

will be select vehicles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Putnam Park Road Course on display.

Leonard said an estimated 20,000 visitors attend the free event, which ends at 5 p.m.

“Carmel has benefited and Artomobilia has benefited from the fact they do so many events that gives people an opportunity to see downtown Carmel,” Leonard said. “For the last 19 years, we have been giving a certain demographic a great reason to check out Carmel and come back.”

Carmel resident Joe Molina, who has a long career in automotive public relations, has joined Artomobilia as an adviser.

During Artomobilia, Carmel on Canvas, a plein air paint-out exhibition and contest will be featured, It will start Aug. 28.

The VELOCE Hangar Party will return from 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 28 to the Jet Access Center at Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville. It will feature 50 performance automobiles.

The evening includes craft cocktails, dinner and live music.

Dance performance benefits nonprofit

“We do change the beneficiary for Happy Hour For a Cause each year to highlight a different local nonprofit that resonates with our dancers and choreographers,” Voreis said. “This year, our chosen charity is Gennesaret Free Clinics. Twenty percent of proceeds from the performances will benefit Gennesaret, helping provide medical care to underserved members of our community.”

Happy Hour For a Cause is set for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29 and 2 p.m. Aug. 30 at The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel.

“The program features a mix of original contemporary and ballet works choreographed by local artists, giving our dancers the opportunity to showcase a range of styles and artistry,” Voreis said.

“The performance also creates a platform for our featured charity to share its mission directly with audiences, with opportunities to learn more about their work and support their organization beyond the performance.”

Voreis said the company this summer is based in downtown Indianapolis at Dance Kaleidoscope and DanceWorks Indy studios.

“We are excited to be starting a new partnership with Dance Innovations in Westfield in just a few weeks, and that will be our main home base for the foreseeable future,” she said.

The school’s 18-member advanced small concert choir joined Foreigner Aug. 7 to sing the chorus of “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Fishers High School Choir Director Scott Archer said the school got the opportunity after a local radio station reached out to the program.

“It was such an incredible beginning of the school year opportunity,” Archer said. “To have this be these kids’ first experience of the school year helps inspire all of us to have a fantastic year.

Neighbors or enemies?

Commentary by Jeff Worrell How fast do we put people in a box when they don’t see eye-to-eye with us? It happens in a heartbeat. One minute you are chatting comfortably with a neighbor over coffee, and the next, you bring up a local issue, a school board decision or a city project, and the temperature in the room instantly drops. Suddenly, you aren’t just two people talking. You’re on opposite sides of a line.

It raises a simple question: when you disagree with someone, does that automatically make them your enemy?

If we’re being completely honest, our brains love to default to that reflex. It’s easy to treat an opposing view as an enemy position because it gives us a neat, comfortable boundary. It lets us feel entirely right while assigning motive and making the other person entirely wrong. Winning the debate becomes the whole goal, and we walk away feeling like we defended our turf.

But what did we actually win?

In a community like ours, the person on the other side of that argument isn’t a faceless adversary. They are the person you pass on the Monon, the parent sitting three

rows down at the high school game, or the neighbor you see at the farmers market on Saturday morning. They care about this city just as much as you do.

When we zoom out and look at the larger story, we realize we are usually standing on a shared baseline: two people who care deeply about the community, looking at the exact same puzzle from totally different angles.

Poor time for expansion Editor, We should strongly oppose any proposal to dramatically expand bobcat killing while so many questions remain about how these decisions are being made.

Equally troubling are the recent resignations of several Indiana Department of Natural Resources Commission members. When experienced commissioners step down during a period of controversial wildlife policy discussions, the public naturally wonders whether the decisionmaking process is functioning as it should. Rather than rushing to increase bobcat kills, state leaders should restore public confidence by ensuring that wildlife policies are transparent, science-based and free from political pressure.

Wildlife management should reflect long-term conservation goals, not short-term demands. Bobcats

help maintain healthy ecosystems by naturally controlling prey populations. Expanding opportunities to kill them by a shocking 60 percent as is proposed, when the DNR’s own data shows that this could decimate our bobcat populations, risks reversing years of conservation progress and permanently losing public trust in the conservation decisionmaking.

Indiana residents deserve an open process that welcomes independent scientific review and meaningful public input before irreversible decisions are made.

Our state has worked hard to bring native wildlife back. We should not jeopardize that success by acting before the public has confidence that decisions are being made for the right reasons.

That’s why so many physicians have come to appreciate what Medicare Advantage offers to many older patients. The program provides vision, dental and hearing coverage that seniors need. It also offers transportation, meal delivery and other supplemental benefits that aren’t available through traditional Medicare. Those services make everyday life easier, preventive care more realistic and they help people stay independent and healthier longer.

It isn’t surprising that seniors value the program as well. Recent polling shows senior voters have a favorable view of Medicare Advantage and would be less likely to vote for a member of Congress who supported harmful cuts to this program.

Physicians encourage patients to take preventive steps before health problems become more serious. Public policy should take the same approach by addressing risks early rather than waiting for them to become medical crises that lead to increased suffering and expense.

Congress should protect Medicare Advantage and preserve the stability that millions of seniors have come to rely on.

Editor, Flock license plate cameras are appearing along the roads and intersections of our community.

There is a pair near my home on 146th Street just east of Ditch Road. They should be removed.

The justification is public safety. The cost is something Americans should be extremely reluctant to surrender: the ability to move around our own communities without having our movements routinely recorded and stored.

We are not suspects because we drive to work, visit a friend, attend church, see a doctor, go to a political meeting or simply leave our homes.

The United States is not China. We should not accept a society in which government surveillance of ordinary citizens becomes normal simply because technology makes it easy. If we don’t push back now, the surveillance system will simply continue to expand, and it won’t end with just these cameras. There will be listening devices and drones and AI-driven surveillance too.

This isn’t about whether cameras can help police solve crimes. Of course they can. Almost any expansion of government surveillance can be justified by pointing to crimes it might prevent or solve. That doesn’t NOTICE OF DETERMINATION TO CONSTRUCT mean we should accept it.
