Residents voice concerns over proposed Kroger near Heritage Hill

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com A proposed Kroger grocery store and fuel station near the Heritage Hill neighborhood is drawing opposition from nearby residents, who say the development would change the character of the area and bring commercial activity too close to homes.

The proposal calls for a 99,000-square-foot grocery store and accessory fueling station at the southwest corner of South Green Street and Northfield Drive. The project would require an amendment to the Heritage Hill PUD, or planned unit development, ordinance to allow a grocery or market as a permitted use. Town records show the request was continued from the June Advisory Plan Commission meeting and again continued July 27.

Heritage Hill resident Stephanie Manner, who serves as a neighborhood liaison and is circulating a petition opposing the project, said residents are not opposed to growth but believe this location is inappropriate.

“Our neighborhood is what Brownsburg wants,” Manner said. “It’s what people would want to come to Brownsburg for.”

Manner said residents are particularly concerned about the proposed loading area, truck traffic, noise, lighting and the potential effect on property values. She said the nearest homes would be only about 43 feet from portions of the proposed development.

“Right now, as it stands, my 3-, 5- and 8-year-old are set up to be playing in my backyard 43 feet from semi trucks,” she said.

Manner said residents also worry traffic congestion on Green Street could push drivers through Heritage Hill. She questioned whether the traffic analysis fully accounts for other proposed developments nearby.

The neighborhood has also raised concerns about the zoning change.

Manner said residents purchased their homes with the understanding that the property would allow residential uses or limited recreation, rather than a large commercial operation.

“Basically, they’re asking to be written into the rules,” she said. “When we had this home built for our family, I

wrote our wedding vows onto the studs because we thought it would be our forever home. I want to stay here for our kids and grandkids in the future.”

Manner said she has collected nearly 300 petition signatures and has been communicating with town officials and residents from multiple nearby neighborhoods.

The town said it will not comment on the proposal before the public hearing.

“Because this is an active Advisory Plan Commission case, the Town of Brownsburg does not comment prior to the public hearing to ensure a fair and transparent process,” the town said in an Aug. 11 statement.

In an April 23 social media post, Town Council President Ben Lacey said the town was excited about the possibility of a second Kroger and said the company was working with nearby neighbors to address concerns.

“We regularly hear from families about the importance of convenient,

accessible shopping options, and this project is an opportunity to bring those services closer to where people live and work,” Lacey said.

Manner disputes that residents have been meaningfully engaged by Kroger.

“The company is not working with neighbors,” she said, adding that she sent Kroger a list of concerns in March and has not received a response.

The next step is a public hearing before the Advisory Plan Commission, where Kroger is scheduled to address the commission Aug. 24 regarding its request to amend the PUD. The commission makes recommendations on zoning text and map amendments before such matters can advance to the town council.

“We’re hoping that the representatives of the APC and the council will all see that and vote no,” Manner said.

“They’re the ones who have the power to do that.”

BSCS eyes transportation among budget cuts

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com Brownsburg Community School Corp. officials are preparing for another $3.8 million in ongoing budget cuts in 2027-28, with transportation changes potentially accounting for more than half of the reduction.

Assistant Superintendent for Operations Shane Hacker told the school board Aug. 10 that the district has already achieved its $3 million reduction target for 2026-27. The district is planning $7.9 million in cuts over three years: $3 million in 2026-27, $3.8 million in 2027-28 and $1.1 million in 2028-29.

“Budget cuts,” Hacker said when explaining why the district was already discussing the 2027-28 school year.

“From a transparency standpoint, we want to make sure that we provide as much information in advance as possible to our community.”

Hacker said the district is considering

three-tier bus routing, which could save about $1.3 million, and expanding parent-responsibility zones, saving more than $700,000. Under the proposal, transportation would not be provided within 1 mile of elementary schools and 1.5 miles of secondary schools.

Other possibilities include eliminating nonmandatory preschool transportation, increasing fees for extracurricular and school-day field trips and changing ALPHA start times.

The district reduced 49 positions for 2026-27, including 12 teaching jobs.

Enrollment is down 1.25 percent, while total staffing is down 3.43 percent.

Brownsburg also received $800,000 from the town and townships, but Hacker said the money is being treated as a one-time boost to cash reserves, not ongoing revenue.

The board is expected to consider the transportation changes in September, with community meetings and a survey planned before a December decision.

Braun guilty in 2023 stabbing

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com A Hendricks County jury found Kyle Braun guilty of attempted murder and battery by bodily waste Aug. 10 following a one-day trial stemming from a 2023 attack in Brownsburg.

According to Hendricks County Prosecutor Loren Delp, the case Braun dates to April 24, 2023, when Braun, 34, attacked his mother inside her Brownsburg home. Delp said Braun stabbed her multiple times, leaving a knife embedded in her head.

Despite the severity of her injuries, the woman survived, according to Delp.

Braun fled the home following the attack and was later located by officers near a wooded area by a pool house,

Delp said.

During the subsequent investigation and medical treatment, Braun also intentionally spit on an emergency medical technician, resulting in the battery by bodily waste charge.

Delp prosecuted the case for the state.

“Kyle Braun tried to murder his own mother,” Delp said in a statement. “He left her with a knife embedded in her head and walked away. She survived — and today, a Hendricks County jury made sure he did not walk away from justice. Violence this brutal demands accountability.”

Prosecutor Delp specifically recognized the work of the Brownsburg Police Department, first responders and medical personnel in handling the incident and subsequent investigation.

Braun is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 8. The guilty verdict comes more than three years after the attack.

 Summer Soundtracks concert set for Aug. 21 — The Endless Summer Band will perform Aug. 21 as part of the Brownsburg Parks’ free Summer Soundtracks concert series at Arbuckle Acres Park, 200 N. Green St. The concert is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Guests can enjoy live music, yard games, food trucks and a beer and wine garden. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

New partnership expands parks, trail funding news@youarecurrent.com A new partnership between Visit Hendricks County and The Parks Foundation of Hendricks County aims to put more funding toward parks, trails and outdoor recreation projects throughout the county.

The organizations are adding a dedicated parks and trails component to The PLACES Initiative, a recently launched grant program from Visit Hendricks County. Eligible outdoor projects will be considered through the Parks Foundation’s existing annual spring grant process.

The PLACES Initiative — short for Powering Local Authentic Community Experiences & Spaces — is intended to support projects that improve the county’s quality of place and create experiences for residents and visitors.

Visit Hendricks County Executive Director and CEO Jaime Bohler Smith said outdoor recreation is a significant interest among county residents.

“Our research tells us that residents want more opportunities to enjoy their free time right here in Hendricks County, and outdoor recreation is one of their top three interests,” Bohler Smith stated. “Investing in parks, trails and outdoor amenities enhances quality of life for our residents while also creating a stronger, more appealing visitor experience. That is exactly the kind of community-first impact The PLACES Initiative is designed to support.”

The additional money will be incorporated into the Parks Foundation’s annual grant program. Funding can support projects involving new or improved parks, trail expansion, accessibility upgrades and enhancements to outdoor spaces.  Beach Boys tribute set at Hummel Park — Sounds of Summer, a Beach Boys tribute band, will perform Aug. 29 as part of Guilford Township’s free summer concert series at Hummel Park Performing Arts Center, 5373 S. Sugar Grove Road, Plainfield. The family-friendly concert is scheduled for 7 to 9:30 p.m. Food vendors will be available, and guests should bring lawn chairs or blankets. Lawn seating is provided. Beer and wine will be available for purchase from Brew Link Brewing.

The partnership also allows Visit Hendricks County to draw on the Parks Foundation’s experience working with local park systems as it distributes PLACES funding for outdoor recreation.

Groups interested in funding for public park or trail projects through PLACES will apply through the Parks Foundation’s grant program.

Information about eligibility requirements and application deadlines will be released as the spring grant cycle gets closer.

NHRA U.S. Nationals returns Sept. 2-7 news@youarecurrent.com The roar of more than 900 racecars will once again fill Hendricks County when the 72nd Cornwell Quality Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals returns Sept. 2-7 to Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

The six-day Labor Day weekend event features the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series along with the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series, Flexjet NHRA Factory Stock Showdown, Holley EFI NHRA Factory X and the NHRA Funny Car All-Star Callout.

The U.S. Nationals is billed as the sport’s biggest event, and fans will have opportunities to get close to the action. Every ticket includes pit access, allowing spectators to watch teams service their cars, meet drivers and seek autographs.

Nearly 950 cars across the event’s racing categories are expected to compete.

Top-level dragsters can exceed 300 mph and reach the finish line in less than four seconds.

Organizers advise first-time visitors to arrive early and plan to spend the day at the track. Friday and Saturday evening racing are popular with fans as flames become visible from the cars’ exhausts.

Organizers recommend ear protection for all ages. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, hats, water and other sun-protection items also are recommended.

General parking is free. Preferred parking is available for $40 per day near the main fan entrance.

Six-day reserved and general admission packages are available, with daily ticket prices varying by seating location. Children 12 and younger are free with a paid adult.

Beyond the track, fans can explore vintage race and street cars, live entertainment, special features and autograph sessions. The area’s racing community also offers opportunities to visit local race shops during the weekend.

Grissom Air Show set for Aug. 29-30

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Those who attend and enjoy the Grissom Air & Space Expo later this month can thank a Zionsville resident.

Maj. Joni Friar, who serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, is the air show director for the Aug. 29-30 event at Grissom Air Reserve Base near Peru and Bunker Hill.

Friar, who lives in Zionsville, has been on orders for the last three years with the Air Force, serving as the wing executive officer at Grissom. She added the title of air show director in December 2025 because of her experience with aviation. When she was in the Air Force, she was a drone pilot, operating the RQ-4 Global Hawk, a high-altitude surveillance aircraft.

As air show director, Friar is in charge of coordinating and scheduling the event and working with the base’s many partners to ensure the experience is enjoyable for spectators. And perhaps more importantly, making sure there are enough restroom facilities, she joked. A previous air show at Grissom did not have enough.

The Thunderbirds, an Air Force demonstration unit, are the highlight of the show. They are known for their flight formations and solos.

“If you’ve never seen the Thunderbirds, (they) are unmatched,” Friar said. “Everytime I’ve (seen them), ‘I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is amazing.’”

The Thunderbirds will perform at 4 p.m. both days.

“We really hit the lottery with them,” Friar said.

Admission and parking are free.

There will be food vendors and kids activities. Roots in Blue, a music group with the Air Force’s Band of Mid-America, will perform.

On display will be a variety of aircraft, including the KC-135 Stratotanker — Grissom is known for the 434th Air Refueling Wing — along with one of the only B-29s that still fly and a C-5 Super Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the Air Force.

“Aviation enthusiasts are going to love this if they’re in the Indy area,” Friar said.

Friar was working at a law firm immediately after college when she thought about what she wanted to do with her life. A friend recommended enlisting in the Air Force. She had her sights set on being a pilot but was 0.2 inches too short, so she became a drone pilot instead.

“I’m very lucky in my path,” Friar said.

Friar’s on-orders time will conclude later this fall. She’ll then go back to being “Civilian Joni” and her regular job with Northrop Grumman — training NATO pilots on the RQ-4 drone. She’ll spend two months in Sicily, her seventh trip doing so.

A free community event, including a meet-and-greet with Thunderbirds crews, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Grissom Air Museum.

“I just want people to show up to this thing,” Friar said.

Senior boys soccer player embraces leadership role

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Senior forward Sam Caswell knows the Brownsburg High School boys soccer team needs him to be one of its main leaders.

“With all the seniors graduating, I’ve adopted more of a leadership role, so I’ve definitely grown in that aspect – learning to be patient, learning to know when to talk and how to talk to specific people,” he said.

Caswell started the last two seasons, scoring 12 goals with a team-high 11 assists as a junior as the Bulldogs reached the IHSAA regional final.

“He started on JV as a freshman but by the team, we got to the tournament, he was my first sub,” Bulldogs coach Sean McGrath said. “He’s become more consistent in what he does. He’s a very good 1-on-1 player. He’s getting up the field and is more confident. He’s not afraid to go after whatever defenders are in front of him. He’s a left-footed forward and he’s like 6-foot-3, and we can put him on the left side of the field or the right side.”

Caswell, who was named to the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association all-state team, plays club soccer for Indy Eleven MLS Next.

“He has worked hard every single year to continue to get better,” McGrath said.

Caswell said he is focused on keeping his confidence high.

good performance, I keep my confidence, I stay humble,” he said. “I’ve got to make sure I can dwell on that for 12 hours, but the next game is coming up, so I have to prepare for that.”

The Bulldogs graduated top goal scorer Micah Eldridge, who had 24 goals and was named the Hoosier Crossroads Conference Player of the Year.

“I see our guys as still amazing goal scorers,” Caswell said. “I see my role as I don’t have to take on too much more responsibility (offensively). I see my (teammates) as amazing guys who if I put them in the right position or they are in the right position, they can score.”

Caswell said despite losing 17 seniors, he is optimistic about defending the Hoosier Crossroads Conference title.

“But the seniors were good enough to us that they left a standard in their path,” he said. “We’re adopting that standard yet again and we will defend our HCC title. From just a fun standpoint, I’m just excited to hang out with the guys again. I’ve been with these guys for three, four years and so I mean they’re brothers to me, I’m excited to play with them again.”

Caswell competed in track and field as a freshman and played basketball his first two years at Brownsburg. He gave up cross country before his freshman year because it’s a fall sport like soccer.

“I do love track, cross country and basketball, but I love soccer the most,” he said.

Eight Hendricks County-area students are among more than 300 students statewide selected for the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, according to local lawmakers.

The scholarship provides up to $10,000 annually, or $40,000 over four years, to high-achieving students who commit to teaching for five years in an eligible Indiana school.

More than 1,000 students from more than 300 high schools in 90 Indiana counties applied for the scholarship this year.

Local recipients include Kayla Bloomer of Danville Community High School; Callista Clark and Ian DeGeeter of Plainfield High School; Molly Dean of Tri-West Senior High School; Grace Eads of Brownsburg High School; Liliana Ruffner of Avon High School; Raeley Shilling of Plainfield High School; and Whitney Smith of Cascade Senior High School.

“Indiana’s future is shaped in our classrooms every day, and the teachers leading those classrooms play a critical role in preparing the next generation of Hoosiers,” said State Rep. Becky Cash (R-Zionsville), who serves on the House Education Committee. “These scholarships recognize students who have excelled academically and encourage them to use their talents to make a difference in the lives of others.”

Students must meet academic requirements to qualify, including graduating in the top 20 percent of their class, earning a qualifying SAT or ACT score or maintaining a 3.0 GPA. “It’s essential that those leading our classrooms have strong academic skills and demonstrate a dedication to teaching future generations,” State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) said. “This program has helped so many students achieve their education goals and made our schools stronger.”

HONORING PAST AND PRESENT Virgil Park connects abandoned railroad corridor to what is now a recreational destination

Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com On a warm August morning, the sounds at Virgil Park are a long way from the clatter of a passing train.

Frogs call from the wetlands. Birds move through the prairie. A boardwalk carries visitors over the landscape, while cyclists and walkers pass along the B&O Trail just beyond the park.

But the land has not always been this quiet.

Virgil Park sits along the former Baltimore & Ohio Railroad corridor, a rail line that once connected communities through Hendricks County.

The railroad was eventually abandoned, and what remained became the foundation for a different kind of transportation network — one built for walkers, runners and cyclists instead of locomotives.

Today, the 6-plus-acre park serves as both a trailhead and a living reminder of that transformation.

Brownsburg Parks naturalist and volunteer coordinator Riley Kuhns recently led a “History on the Trail” program at Virgil Park, using the site to explore how the

land has changed over generations.

The Aug. 7 program was part of the town’s observance of America’s 250th anniversary.

“Every landscape has a story,” Kuhns told participants.

Long before the park existed, the land supported wildlife, agriculture and human communities. Then came the railroad. Today, it supports recreation and provides a place where visitors can experience wetlands, prairie and the trail all in one setting.

For Kuhns, the connection between the railroad and the trail is particularly fitting.

The railroad once served as a means of connecting communities. The trail fills much the same purpose, only at a slower pace.

“The purpose has changed from the railroad to the trail, but the idea remains the same in providing connection,” Kuhns said.

That idea is central to the story of Diana and Hall Virgil.

Diana became involved with efforts to transform the abandoned railroad corridor into a recreational trail in the early 1990s. She and Hall spent more than two decades working with volunteers, donors, government officials and residents to make the vision

a reality. Diana helped secure millions of dollars in grants, while the couple worked to acquire railroad property, clear the corridor and build support for the trail.

The first 1,000 feet of the B&O Trail in Brownsburg were paved in 2009. The trail has since grown into a regional recreational resource, with Brownsburg currently managing an 8.2-mile paved portion that includes trailheads at Green Street, Cardinal Park and Virgil Park.

Brownsburg named Virgil Park for Diana and Hall in 2019. The park officially opened in 2024, shortly after Diana’s death. Hall participated in the grand opening.

“The Virgils are the namesake of the park,” Kuhns said. “They were kind of like the starters of the B&O trail, and they were the fundraisers, the go-getters.”

The park itself was designed to tell another part of the story: The history of the land.

Rather than flattening the property and building a traditional park, Kuhns said designers incorporated existing wetlands and natural features. A network of boardwalks and crushed-gravel paths allows visitors to move through the landscape while minimizing the impact on sensitive areas. A pollinator garden and native plantings complement the wetlands and prairie.

The park’s design was intentional, from the way water moves through the property to the placement of the paths.

“They just didn’t want to come in, build a park,” she said. “They wanted it to represent the history of the land and incorporate the features that it already had.”

The approach has earned Virgil Park recognition, including the 2024 Indiana chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects Biodiversity and Climate Action Green Ribbon Award and the 2025 American Council of Engineering Companies of Indiana Engineering Excellence State Finalist Award.

The wetlands also make the park a destination for wildlife. Kuhns said visitors can encounter mallards, great blue herons, green herons, frogs, butterflies and dragonflies. The area has also become a recognized birding spot.

Festival includes young artists

By Alex McCarthy alex@youarecurrent.com The annual Festival of the Arts in Brownsburg celebrates all types of art, from visual art to music. This year, it’s looking to champion all ages of artists as well.

Festival of the Arts, operated by the Greater Brownsburg Chamber of Commerce, is welcoming applications from artists age 18 or younger. Young artists can apply at brownsburg.com/festival-of-the-arts. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Sept. 9.

This is the first year the festival has specifically asked for artists under 18, Greater Brownsburg Chamber of Commerce Director Kiley Chandler said.

“Art is all around us and can be enjoyed and created by people of all ages,” Chandler stated in an email. “We wanted to expand the Festival of the Arts to give young artists in Brownsburg an opportunity to showcase their creativity, share their talents with the community and gain experience as artists.”

The free festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 19 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 20 at Arbuckle Acres Park in Brownsburg. The Night Before the Art event runs from 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 18, offering a sneak peek at the festival along with drinks and appetizers.

The festival will feature art of all kinds, interactive workshops, live music and more. Local food vendors include Greek’s Pizzeria, Stadium 1 BBQ, The Little Misu, Zo-Bot’s Sodas & Fries and Books & Brews.

The Chamber is using social media to discover and promote artists. Young artists who register can send photos of their work to director@brownsburg.com for the Chamber to share on its social media feeds in advance of the festival.

“There is so much young talent in our community, and we’re excited to give these artists a platform to be seen, celebrated and encouraged to continue pursuing their creativity,” Chandler stated.

Ballet INitiative co-founder Christina Voreis firmly believes in giving back to the community.

“We do change the beneficiary for Happy Hour For a Cause each year to highlight a different local nonprofit that resonates with our dancers and choreographers,” Voreis said. “This year, our chosen charity is Gennesaret Free Clinics. Twenty percent of proceeds from the performances will benefit Gennesaret, helping provide medical care to underserved members of our community.”

Happy Hour For a Cause is set for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29 and 2 p.m. Aug. 30 at The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel.

“The program features a mix of original contemporary and ballet works choreographed by local artists, giving our dancers the opportunity to showcase a range of styles and artistry,” Voreis said.

Voreis said the company is based in downtown Indianapolis at Dance Kaleidoscope and DanceWorks Indy studios this summer.

Voreis, a Westfield resident, serves as co-director with Lauren Nasci, a Carmel resident. Although Voreis is no longer performing, Nasci is one of 12 Ballet INitiative dancers.

Artomobilia to feature unique Lane Museum cars

“The ones that are raising the most eyebrows are the Jeff Lane Motor Museum cars,” said John Leonard, Artomobilia’s co-founder and director. “We’re going to bring those into the Arts & Design District under their own power, so people see these things move around.

You can go down to Nashville (Tenn.) and see them in a museum but you don’t hear them, you don’t see them move.

That’s a unique attribute of what we’ll bring this year.”

When Artomobilia — an automotive design festival and car show — starts at 11 a.m. Aug. 29 in downtown Carmel, the cars will drive into their position in front of the 1933 Lounge on Range Line Road.

“That will be something to see these crazy cars drive down the road,” Leonard said. “These cars will be the last ones into their spots.”

There will be six vehicles from Lane Motor Museum: • 1932 Helicron: A one-of-a-kind, propeller-driven French car found in a barn in 2000, still road-legal in France, and pushed along by a propeller spinning at its nose.

• 1959 Citroën ID 19: The elegant French saloon whose hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension and aerodynamic shape made it decades ahead of its time.

• 1964 Peel P-50 Replica: A nod to the Guinness-record smallest production car ever made, 54 inches long and around 130 pounds, with no reverse gear.

• 2013 Peel Trident Replica: The bubble-topped, clear-domed two-seat sibling of the P50, a microcar that looks straight out of a 1960s space cartoon.

• 1947 Tatra T87: The streamlined, air-cooled rear-V8 Czech saloon with a dorsal fin and a dark legend: so many German officers died driving its 100-mph chassis that they were reportedly banned from it.

• 1964 Amphicar 770: The most successful amphibious car ever built, a convertible that swims on twin propellers and carries the highest tailfins of any production car.

“The cars have left the museum for some other big car shows, but they don’t usually take six cars anywhere,” Leonard said.

Leonard said he met Jeff Lane in September 2025 when comedian and car enthusiast Jay Leno appeared at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “(Lane) is a walking encyclopedia on all the cars nobody knows anything about,” Leonard said.

Leonard said 530 cars are registered entrants along with 40 or more that are sponsored and partner cars. The event started with 40 cars in 2008.

“We’ve gotten more space in Carmel’s Midtown,” he said. “We’ve gone much farther south on Elm (Street) than we normally have.”

There are more than 25 collector car classes on display. In addition, there will be select vehicles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Putnam Park Road Course on display.

Leonard said an estimated 20,000 visitors attend the free event, which ends at 5 p.m.

During Artomobilia, Carmel on Canvas, a plein air paint-out exhibition and contest will be featured, It will start Aug. 28.

The VELOCE Hangar Party will return from 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 28 to the Jet Access Center at Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville. It will feature 50 performance automobiles. The evening includes craft cocktails, dinner and live music.

LIV GOLF LIVES ON news@youarecurrent.com LIV Golf has secured funding from an outside investor to keep the circuit alive beyond this season.

ESPN reported Aug. 5 that league CEO Scott O’Neil didn’t identify the investor or how much money will be injected into the league, but said terms should be finalized soon, with the transaction to be closed in September.

O’Neill stated that there is interest from additional parties to serve as minority investors. ESPN reported that the league needs $250 to $300 million after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced in April that it would no longer finance it.

The league has planned 10 events in 2027, including five team “majors” at international sites such as Australia, South Africa, England, Hong Kong and Mexico.

The future schedule will also include five team “signature events” in the United States. The league’s website doesn’t indicate where the U.S. events will take place.

After the league’s Aug. 20-23 tournament in Westfield, it’s scheduled to play Aug. 27-30 in Michigan. There have been questions about whether the Michigan event will take place, but the website is still selling tickets.

The two personal injury attorneys don’t take most things too personally, especially their lack of hair. In fact, they can make a case that being so open about it has been good for business. You will enjoy their unique way of reaching out to the public, highlighting their lack of a mop on top and their legal acumen.

Their billboards that celebrate their shiny pates are a testimony to the power of self-deprecating humor.

These two bald legals have created more than a dozen of these billboards to attract potential clients who may be uncomfortable combing over the internet in search of legal assistance. In fact, the two have been adamantly opposed to comb-overs most of their adult lives.

They don’t know exactly how the balding billboard idea began, but talking to these very creative guys one morning last week, I’m pretty sure the concept just came off the top of their heads.

Darron Stewart’s father started the firm back in 1982, making Darron the heir apparent of the business. Unlike the counselor’s hair, the firm has experienced steady growth, now employing some 40 people in Carmel. Nick started as an unpaid intern in 2010,

and a year later joined the company.

“I love the creative part of working here,” Nick said.

Then, pointing to his skull, he noted, “But I haven’t had a part up here in 20 years.”

I asked the follically frugal duo if they liked all the attention the billboards were getting. They winked and denied they were enjoying the publicity.

But even they knew that was a bald-faced lie.
