Immigration debate comes to Fishers

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Two rallies with different messages about immigration were held Aug. 1, one at Holland Park in Fishers and the other at an undisclosed location — originally planned for Fishers, but reportedly moved on the day of the event.

The first event to be announced was a “mass deportation rally” hosted by Save Heritage Indiana and featuring speaker Greg Bovino, former chief of U.S. Border Patrol. The event was to have recorded messages from Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith and Attorney General Todd Rokita. Indiana Rep. Jim Lucas, a Seymour Republican, also was expected to attend, according to organizers.

In response to the Save Heritage event, Fishers Resists, a local organization that has hosted previous Immigration and Customs Enforcement demonstrations, put together a “Hoosier hospitality march” the same day, attracting a large crowd of participants who walked a loop between Holland Park and the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater.

Before the march, Indiana Sen. Fady Qaddoura, a Democrat representing District 30 — the north Indianapolis area — addressed the group. He said Hoosier hospitality is a promise that is being tested by groups like Save Heritage Indiana.

“What they are trying to do — they are replacing slogans, uniforms and messages, but they are using the same playbook that played in Indiana over 100 years ago,” he said. “One hundred years ago, our state, unfortunately, had one of the largest organized hate groups in the country, where the KKK established headquarters and … claimed morality, claimed following scripture, claimed patriotism.”

tional speakers addressed the crowd as the weather threatened rain and thunderstorms. A single masked counterprotester was at the event and was surrounded by marchers who blocked his sign while mocking him. March organizers intervened and asked that he be allowed to exercise his right to free speech.

Current requested credentials to attend and cover the Save Heritage Indiana mass deportation rally, but the request was denied. Group founder Daniel Poynter posted an Aug. 4 statement on social media, claiming that the “sold out” event had 130 participants.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness released a statement Aug. 1, noting that the community has become a global destination for people to raise their families.

“Fishers did not ask to be a part of this debate, but today, people have chosen to express their constitutional right to free speech and assembly in our city,” he stated. “Our community expects those participating will obey all laws and will exemplify civil discourse.

Fishers Police will be prepared to keep everyone safe and hold anyone accountable who does not follow the law.”

Candidates for Indiana Senate District 31, which includes Fishers and Lawrence, weighed in on the rallies.

Kerry Forestal, the Democratic nominee, released a statement rejecting the Save Heritage Indiana message. He called for an immigration system that protects the nation’s borders while also

protecting due process.

“America has both the right and the responsibility to secure its borders, enforce its laws and maintain an immigration system that is orderly, fair and accountable,” Forestal said. “But celebrating mass deportation is not a serious approach to public safety. It is a political spectacle built around fear and division, and it does not reflect the values of Fishers or the country I have spent my life serving.”

Forestal is a former U.S. Marshal and is completing his second term as Marion County sheriff.

Senate District 31 Republican candidate Juanita Albright called the mass deportation rally “divisive.”

“America is a nation of laws and I firmly support our immigration laws and believe they need to be enforced,” she stated in an email to Current. “Our nation is a nation of immigrants — immigrants who obeyed the law and entered this country legally. Those who break these laws should be held accountable. However, (the) mass deportation rally in Fishers is divisive and serves no purpose other than to create fear. Hoosiers deserve thoughtful solutions, not political spectacles that inflame tensions.”

Albright stated that immigration laws can be enforced while treating people with dignity and respect. Albright is completing her first term on the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Board of Trustees.

Assault charges against teacher dismissed

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Assault charges against a teacher at a private school in Fishers have been dismissed pending further investigation.

Nathan K. Sandlin, 39, was charged May 21 for allegedly assaulting a 12-year-old student at Eman School.

The two felony charges of battery and strangulation were dismissed June 9 following a request from the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office.

In an email response to Current’s request for information, Prosecuting Attorney Josh Kocher said the case needed additional investigation.

“As prosecutors, we have an obligation to ensure that charging decisions

are based on a complete and thorough review of the available evidence,” he wrote. “At this time, we believe further investigative steps are appropriate before moving forward. The dismissal does not reflect a final determination on the merits of the case. Once the additional investigation is complete, we will evaluate all of the evidence and determine whether refiling charges is appropriate. Because this remains an active matter, we will not be commenting further at this time.”

According to the charging documents, the alleged assault took place on the last day of school before summer break, the result of a dispute over a water gun.

Through its inaugural Strategic Grants cycle, HCCF awarded $1.675 million to eight organizations across Hamilton County.

“Our Strategic Grants are very different from our traditional funding,” stated Danielle Stiles-Polk, HCCF president. “They are designed to meet organizations at key moments when a larger investment can help them take the next step. These resources allow nonprofits to pursue opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.”

The 2026 Strategic Grant recipients include: • Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville: Awarded $250,000 to advance facility improvements and renovation planning focused on safety, accessibility and expanded capacity.

• Child Care Answers: Awarded $150,000 to establish a child care resource specialist position to support families, child care pro-

viders, employers and community partners • Grace Care Center Foundation: Awarded $125,000 to support volunteer leadership development, staff capacity and improved operational systems.

• Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis, Inc.: Awarded $250,000 to aid in the purchase of 6-plus acres in Hamilton County for a future 46-home affordable housing development.

• Hamilton County Youth Assistance Program: Awarded $250,000 to support the expansion of services across all six local youth assistance branches.

• Prevail, Inc.: Awarded $200,000 to strengthen fundraising capacity and long-term sustainability.

• Shepherd’s Center of Hamilton County: Awarded $200,000 to expand core programs that provide case management, counseling and volunteer services for older adults and caregivers.

• Teter Organic Farm: Awarded $250,000 to support construction of a new Produce Production Barn.

Agreement supports ICAC Task Force

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com The Fishers Police Department’s Internet Crimes against Children Task Force has been facing an ever-increasing caseload, which has led to a need for better data storage.

The Fishers Board of Public Works and Safety July 28 approved a five-year, $705,000 contract with SHI International Corp. to provide the storage needed for the large, complex files related to those types of cases.

Information Technology Director Tracy Gaynor told the board that data storage for the task force has been an issue for a while.

“A single case could be terabytes upon terabytes of space, and you have to preserve it for a real long period of time while it’s active,” he said. “Once it’s eventually closed, we archive that to the cloud, and that’s appropriate. But when it’s active, it needs to be basically on-premise. So, inevitably, I come to the board very routinely asking for capital improvement dollars to buy storage — and you try to guess at the amount of space you need and you kind of cross your fingers, but you really don’t know day-to-day how many cases are coming in today versus how many are coming in next month.”

Gaynor said the new contract essentially leases space as needed from the

data storage company, which provides all the back-end maintenance and support.

“So, we know with certainty what this storage is going to cost year one, year four, year five,” he said. “But we can also expand it on the fly as we need to — and we know what that cost is to expand it up front.”

He said the ability to expand storage space as needed is a key element to the service.

“The thing about it to me that distinguishes it … is no longer me trying to guess how much space we’re going to need in year two or year four, and you buy more than you need, but then you’re wasting money because you’ve bought more than you need,” he said.

Gaynor added that part of the reason caseloads are expanding is that more communities are joining the task force.

In other matters, the Board of Public Works and Safety approved two contracts with Fredericks, Inc., to install bathroom facilities at the Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School soccer fields, with a combined maximum cost of about $683,000.

Each restroom facility will have four unisex, ADA-compliant restrooms with adjacent storage space.

Trike race returns after hiatus

The Indiana Lions’ annual Brian’s Trike Race returns Sept. 12 after a twoyear hiatus. The event raises money for the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

The race was paused in 2024 because of the construction of a new combined campus for the Indiana School for the Deaf and Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Donations go toward resources for students to help them prepare for independent living.

Brian’s Trike Race will be at 2701 N. Devon Ave. in Indianapolis. All teams must be registered and have paid the $100 entry fee by Aug. 15.

Teams of four compete on adult-size tricycles in a tournament-style competition. Participants do not have to be Garage Garage Cabinets Cabinets Garage Cabinets Lions Club members, but they must be at least 14 years old.

“We have people who do come and just watch and cheer the riders on,” said Linda Scott, co-chair of Brian’s Trike Race. “They have a good time laughing at all the adults on the tricycles racing like crazy.”

The event was created in 1996 by Brian Hellerman as a fundraiser for the Washington Township Lions Club. It was renamed in Hellerman’s honor following his death before the second race.

Noblesville volunteer steps up for students

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com For Noblesville resident Rob Bocko, helping students navigate life is a calling.

Bocko volunteers with Compass Mentoring, a school-based, volunteer mentoring program at Noblesville Schools that provides opportunities for students to build a developmental relationship with an adult who offers support, guidance and encouragement to help students overcome challenges, and set and reach goals.

Bocko said he has been volunteering with Noblesville Schools since the early 2000s, when his kids started school. He has been involved with the textbook adoption committee, Miller Ambassadors and the Noblesville Schools Education Foundation.

“I’m very involved with the schools in general, and that started way back with being a parent volunteer and helping in classrooms when my kids were little,” Bocko said. “My youngest is a senior at Noblesville High School now, and I have three NHS grads. I’ve got

some miles on me.”

That involvement led him to Compass Mentoring, which Mentor Coordinator Nicole McClain launched in 2020.

“I thought it sounded pretty wonderful,” Bocko said. “It really didn’t take off that first year all that well because of the pandemic, so that first year was mostly learning, talking, organizing and getting ready. The next year there were eight of us volunteering, and last I heard that number was approaching 100.”

The program is offered at all 10 of the district’s schools, and more than 100 students are involved. Bocko said it has

provided him a chance to be a steady adult in the lives of several students.

“It’s not counseling. You’re not going in to fix anybody. You’re not going in to solve problems. Really, I am just there to be a constant presence in someone’s life,” Bocko said. “Through the process of building a relationship and building trust, if they choose to share something with me, I’m also there to be a trusted resource. If something were to come up that I think rises to the level of ‘Oh my, I think the school counselor needs to hear this,’ I’m there to help be part of that support. I’m really just there to be a presence that I wish I would have had in my life when I was a kid.”

Bocko said his work with Compass Mentoring helps him teach kids how to function as part of the community.

“I care about the world we’re leaving for our kids,” Bocko said. “It kind of comes back to what I wish I would have had. I figured out a lot of things on my own. It would have been so much easier to figure out with somebody to have a conversation with.”

McClain said Bocko’s work with the program has extended beyond the students he’s mentored, saying it’s reflected in the culture of Compass Mentoring itself.

“From the very beginning of the program, he has walked alongside students from elementary school through high school, ensuring they feel seen, known and supported,” McClain said.

“As mentor coordinator, he’s been a trusted sounding board whose wisdom, perspective and steady encouragement have helped shape me as a leader and a person. Whenever I need an extra volunteer, a thoughtful perspective or someone I know will show up for a student without hesitation, he’s one of the first people I think of.”

Fishers awards $340K for neighborhood projects news@currentinfishers.com The City of Fishers has awarded about $340,000 to 23 neighborhoods through its Neighborhood Vibrancy Grant Program, which provides matching grants to support resident-led projects in neighborhoods.

This year’s grant-funded projects include new entrance monuments; native landscaping and rain gardens; upgraded lighting and signage; safety bollards and sidewalk repairs; a public bike repair station; benches; a Little Free Library; and trail-area improvements, according to a news release from the city.

“Neighborhoods are where residents experience Fishers every day, and these grants give residents a direct role in shaping and improving the places they call home,” Mayor Scott Fadness stated.

“These projects reflect the pride residents have in their neighborhoods and their commitment to investing in the broader Fishers community.”

The Neighborhood Vibrancy Grant Program started in 2018 and funds projects ranging from deferred maintenance to beautification efforts with an 80/20 matching grant of up to $25,000 available to homeowners’ associations and neighborhood groups within Fishers.

Nonprofit flies patients for long-distance medical care

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com The nonprofit Lifeline Pilots is ensuring distance never stands between a patient and medical treatment.

LifeLine Pilots is an organization that offers free flights for passengers with medical or humanitarian needs far from home. It was created by pilot Wanda Whitsitt in 1981.

LifeLine Pilots Communications and Public Relations Manager Andrea Pietrowsky said what started as Whitsitt volunteering her time to transport blood to hospitals from the Red Cross has transitioned to transporting patients undergoing things like cancer treatments to their long distance medical appointments.

“We’ve never flown more patients than we do today,” Pietrowsky said.

“The key point of distinction is that these aren’t emergency flights; these aren’t air ambulances. What was done 45 years ago is the same as today — flying people to their appointments that they would otherwise struggle to access, or maybe not even be able to access at all.”

Jennifer Hatcher, a Noblesville resident and development manager for LifeLine Pilots, said although Hamilton County is viewed as affluent, many people struggle to get to and from medical appointments.

also maybe get any pilots on board to volunteer since we do have a large pilot community here being so close to the Indy Executive Airport and Indy Metro Airport.”

Locally, Hatcher works within the community to spread the word about LifeLine Pilots to community organizations like the Noblesville Rotary Club and at community events.

“The mission really spoke to me, and I’ve been trying to do grassroots outreach here to get the word out,” Hatcher said. “I’ve been fortunate to see one of the flights out of Indy Metro, and it’s just really rewarding.”

have a physician treating them who can verify the need and that they are safe to fly.

“There’s no requirement of age or condition,” Pietrowsky said. “It’s simply if someone can show they have a case and need assistance. There’s no strict income threshold. It’s just that if you would need to fly weekly or monthly, and that shows some sort of challenge. If there’s a barrier of distance, or if you physically struggle to ride for hours in a car.”

A database system shared with other charitable public aviation groups is used to identify patients in need.

“It’s based on regional access for where the pilots are,” Pietrowsky said.

“A lot of our pilots are flying flights that are no more than 200 miles at a time, but we do fly passengers up to 1,000 miles from where they’re going. Sometimes, it becomes a two-legged flight where two pilots and two planes are doing a tradeoff from Point A to B to C. Our pilots are incredible volunteers. They love helping people.”

Approximately 300 pilots volunteer their time, planes and fuel. Locally, Bernie Hirsch, a Carmel resident, has been flying planes for LifeLine Pilots since 1998.

Hirsch said every flight is interesting and fulfilling.

“I’ve been a pilot for over 40 years, and my philosophy about that is I’m going to fly around anyway, so I might as well do something useful with that and something that impacts the lives of other people in a positive way,” Hirsch said.

“I think it’s important that people who have specialized skills use them in a way to help other people, and that’s primarily what I’ve been doing for decades with LifeLine Pilots.”

Fishers library, HAND team up for a fun display with a serious message

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Dozens of tiny, colorful, hand-painted stones outside of Hamilton East Public Library in Fishers tell the story of “home.”

The temporary display is called “Housing Rocks” and is a new initiative

by Hamilton County Area Neighborhood Development — HAND — a nonprofit that focuses on affordable housing solutions.

HAND Marketing Manager Kerri Hubble said the organization’s outreach committee came up with the idea as a way to share what HAND does in the community. She said the project is a great way to spark conversations with different people in the community who may not have heard of HAND or realized the housing needs in Hamilton County.

“We’ve had a few different volunteer groups that have painted the rocks,” she said. “We’ve been to a couple different classrooms and had kids paint rocks, and just recently we were at the first Friday with Noblesville Creates, and they shared their space with us to let people come in and paint rocks.”

Volunteers who painted rocks were asked to think about what home means to them.

“We’ve seen things from, like, a piece of pizza to a couch to dogs and family members and things like that,” Hubble said. “It’s really fun to see just the different things that people think of.”

HAND reached out to the Hamilton East Public Library to see if it could host a display of the painted rocks.

“We know it’s a high traffic area, especially during the summer, and we know they’ve done different displays before for other local nonprofits — and they were open to it and let us do it,” Hubble said, adding that the Fishers branch is the display’s first stop before moving to the Noblesville branch.

Hubble said the outreach committee is looking for additional display locations, in hopes of reaching as many people as possible about the need for affordable housing in Hamilton County.

report, 34,764 Hamilton County households live below the ALICE threshold or in poverty, a HAND news release stated.

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, and represents households with working adults who earn too much to qualify for many forms of assistance but still struggle to afford housing, child care, food, transportation and health care.

“Those are people that already live here that are struggling to make ends meet and are living paycheck to paycheck and they’re working, so it’s a huge need,” Hubble said. “And, with the growth and everything that’s happening in the county (we’re) just trying to bring awareness to that population and the need for housing. We see a lot of new

multifamily housing developments going up, but they’re all on the luxury or high-end. (The display) is just a different way to get people to think about: Are we building for the right people? Are we building for the people that already live here, so that they don’t get pushed out of Hamilton County?”

In a HAND news release, Executive Director Andrea Davis stated that “Housing Rocks” was created to reach people who don’t attend public meetings or read housing reports.

“Instead, it invites people of all ages and backgrounds to think about what home means and why having housing choices matters to the strength of our community,” she stated. “It’s a different way of starting the conversation and one

She added that groups interested in a “Housing Rocks” rock-painting event can contact her.

“They’re more than welcome to reach out to me and set up a volunteer activity where they can either come here to our offices and paint rocks, or we would bring the supplies to them,” she said.

Vintage Spoon Ice Cream Social is a new name to the area, but the business has been around for a decade. The shop at 11691 Fall Creek Rd. was previously known as Crave Ice Cream Social and recently changed its name for trademark purposes before franchising.

Owner Chris Collins applied for a trademark for Crave Ice Cream Social in 2025, but the name was rejected because it was “too broad.” He then changed the name to Vintage Spoon Ice Cream Social and had the trademark approved July 7 of this year – just in time to open a franchise in the north Indianapolis Broad Ripple area.

Collins said patrons frequently question the name change and he wants to set the record straight.

“We still get asked the question every day by customers,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of people (who don’t) know the reason why we had to do it.”

“Everything’s the same as it was when it was Crave. I’d like to think maybe even a little bit better, right… as we’ve learned and gotten better,” Chris said. “We’ve been at the Marina (for) 10 years. (We) opened (as) Crave in 2016 and then I bought it in 2021-2022 and owned it as Crave for (around) three years before we went through this trademark issue.”

The name change was not made in vain. Collin’s goal of franchising the business has been successful, with another location to open mid-August at 6528 Cornell Ave. in Broad Ripple.

Collins has prior experience with franchises, previously owning three Greek’s Pizzeria locations across the state. He left Greek’s in 2022 and hasn’t looked back.

Jeni’s slated for Fishers

An Ohio-based national ice cream company appears to be planning its first Indiana scoop shop at The Union at Fishers District, a development near I-69 and 116th Street.

There was no response to an email asking Jeni’s Ice Creams to confirm the new location. However, a map on developer Thompson Thrift’s website shows a Jeni’s scoop shop next to a planned two-story Cunningham Restaurant Group restaurant.

Other restaurant and retail spaces shown on the Union at Fishers District map include Racha Thai, Everbowl, Kitchen Social, Tous les Jours, Flower Child, Niku Sushi, Piedra Mexican Steakhouse, The Oakmont, Jet Set Pilates, Unplug, SWTHZ wellness studio, Renova Aesthetics wellness spa and a jewelry store. Limited space remains available for lease but most of the approximately 60,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and entertainment space appears to be spoken for.

“Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams officially opened in late November 2002 in the North Market, a centuries-old public market in Columbus, Ohio,” the website states.

Fishers businesses team up for golf improvement study news@currentinfishers.com Fishers-based Back Nine Golf and Activate Brain & Body Fitness have announced the launch of a six-week exploratory golf performance study designed to examine whether combining cognitive training with physical exercise can improve golf performance for adults age 40 and older.

The program will recruit qualified participants for a structured study that compares traditional exercise, dual-task brain-body training and a control group using objective golf performance measurements.

“Unlike traditional golf instruction that focuses primarily on swing mechanics, this initiative explores whether improving the brain’s ability to process information while moving may lead to better consistency, timing, coordination and overall performance on the golf course,” the announcement stated “The project’s underlying hypothesis is that enhanced neuromuscular efficiency may translate into measurable improvements in golf-specific skills.”

Participants accepted into the study will be randomly assigned to a dual-task brain and body training group, an exercise-only training group or an assessment-only control group.

Those selected for the training groups will receive two supervised 60-minute

workouts each week for six weeks at no cost. All participants will complete physical, cognitive and golf assessments before, in the middle of and at the end of the program — including three golf evaluations at Back Nine Golf’s indoor golf facility.

“For years we’ve helped people improve how they move, think and perform in everyday life. This project allows us to explore whether those same brain-body training principles can enhance golf performance,” stated Mike Gelfgot, COO and co-founder of Activate Brain & Body Fitness.

Coleman Gerstner, owner of Back Nine Golf, stated that golfers alway focus on fine tuning their swing, but performance is about more than mechanics.

“This partnership with Activate Brain & Body Fitness is an opportunity to combine objective performance data with innovative training to help golfers potentially unlock improvements in a new way,” he stated.

The initiative is structured as an exploratory performance study rather than a formal clinical trial. The partners hope to gain early insight into whether targeted cognitive and physical training can positively influence golf performance.

New owners renovate Prairie View amenities

“When we bought it, we really felt the area was a great area to be in, great community, wonderful golf course,” General Manager Dennis Stankovic said. “We thought there was a lot of potential to bring in our food and beverage experience and provide a unique golfing experience that the market’s never seen before.”

The club at 7000 Longest Dr. has a full-service restaurant, a bar with beers on tap and an ice cream counter. Menu items include hand-tossed pizza baked in a handcrafted Marra pizza oven and barbecue prepared in-house in an Ole Hickory Pit Smoker.

The ice cream counter has selections from Graeter’s, Cappannari’s and Mayday.

“We don’t want to just be known as a golf course, but we also want to be everybody’s favorite local bar and restaurant,” Stankovic said. “(We want to offer) stuff that people would want to come out, eat, enjoy, and we have a beautiful view at a beautiful venue, and so it just makes sense to have top-quality food and a top dining experience to go along with the top golfing experience.”

A full-service restaurant and bar were a major focus of the renovations at Prairie View Golf Club. Prominent menu items include hand-tossed pizza and smoked barbecue.

Another renovation is the Kids Zone area. The clubhouse-style space includes beanbags, large TV screens and video game consoles for kids ages 5 and older to play Thursday through Sundays after 5 p.m.

Children are checked in and out and monitored by an attendant.

“If you just focus on the top percentage of the

golfers in the community, then you’re missing out on coaching a lot of people,” Stankovic said. “Golf is doing great right now, but it’s also gone through some hard times, so we feel by making it more of a family-friendly environment, we’re exposing more people to the great game.”

Father-son duo’s musical set for Carmel

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The adage of writing what you know seemed appropriate for Dr. Jeff Foy. An emergency room physician in Indianapolis, he always thought the ER would be an ideal setting for a musical.

“I thought it would be awesome if I could be the one to tell that story,” he said.

But he didn’t think it could happen because he can’t play or write music.

When hearing his then-15-year-old son Jacob Foy work on a melody in his room, the 53-year-old Fishers resident had an idea that they could work together.

The Foys will stage their largest production yet of “Emergency The Musical,” with five performances Aug. 27-30 at The Tarkington at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

There was a performance in Bloomington in 2018, which Jacob developed as an independent project when he attended Indiana University.

That was followed by three performances at the New York Theater Festival.

“Since the New York production, we’ve added five new songs,” Jeff said. “The first-act closer is new. We have obviously changed some of the storylines and some of the dialog to accommodate the new songs. I think it’s more streamlined of a show with strong character development.”

A 2017 Fishers High School graduate and a Carmel resident, Jacob wrote all the music. Father and son wrote the lyrics and script together.

“We got started when I was 15 or 16, and that’s a hard age for any boy in their parents’ relationship because you’re trying to find your independence and find out who you are, so it was fun for us to connect back then,” Jacob said. “Then it’s given us a really good avenue to maintain a really fun aspect in our relationship. It’s easy when your dad is your co-writing part-

ner because you already have a level of comfortability that you need for a good collaboration. We understand each other’s tastes and what we think is going to work well.”

The plot in the ER centers on intern Justin Marks having one shift to prove himself because he didn’t match into a residency program.

“He is going against his med school rival on the same night for that one spot, so they are competing against one another,” Jacob said.

Cole Winston, who performed in the IU production, returns in the role of Justin. Robbie Russo, another IU student who was in the original production, also returns.

The cast has 30 members, larger than the 14 in the New York performances. None of the returning cast members performed in the New York production.

“I’m looking forward to having a big cast for the first time,” Jacob said.

“There is a lot of ensemble singing in the show. The other thing I’m most excited for is just to share it with the community. We got a lot of support from Hoosiers, in general. When we started this in Bloomington, people came from all over the state to see it.

Then people came from Indiana to

New York to see it. We had people help us out all over the state.”

Jeff said many community members told him they wanted to see the production when it came to the area.

“It’s really rewarding and exciting to bring it here, so people can see what we’ve been working on since 2015,” he said. “I’m also excited to debut the five new songs. I’m excited to see how these songs feel and sound and mesh with the show.”

Jeff’s sister, Melissa Stainbrook, is the music director. She is a Brownsburg High School choir teacher. Her daughter, Madison Stainbrook, is in the ensemble.

“I love the role of Gina because she supplies comic relief in a very serious environment,” Broadwater said. “She clearly doesn’t fit into the usual role of an ER worker, but Gina loves to stand out. I’m excited to work on making her bubbly personality believable in this workplace so that she seems real and relatable.”

Hepcats to be featured

Naptown Hepcats, an Indiana-based rockabilly band, will be spotlighted in the Local Mix Music Series at The Studio Theater at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Drummer Terry Fox and bassist Mike Strauss are Carmel residents. Vocalist-guitarist Spencer Mitchell resides in Fishers. They look forward to the performance.

“We’ve played Carmel Porchfest the past couple of years, and we’ve played (the) Noblesville (Front Porch Music Festival) the last couple of years,” Mitchell said. “So, we’ve had our presence in the community, but to be highlighted by such a prominent show is going to be new to us, and we’re excited about that.”

The band started as a tribute to Stray Cats, a three-musician rockabilly band formed in 1979 consisting of Brian Setzer, Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom. Naptown Hepcats now perform original music, though they’ve stayed within the genre.

“We are different (from) anything you’ve probably heard before, and that’s exciting. It’s definitely fun to hear a style of music that you’re definitely not typically familiar with,” Mitchell said.

Fly fishing as therapy

Al White still remembers hearing his sister’s scream when he got the call that their grandfather had been brutally murdered in New York.

“I lost other family members to violent crime,” said White, who was 9 years old and living in Dover, Del., at the time. “My father was in and out of lockup. I had my own challenges as a result and made some wrong decisions.”

In 2020, the 56-year-old Carmel resident found fly fishing to be a peaceful hobby that proved cathartic. It then became the basis for McCordsville resident Grant Michael’s short film “On the Stream,” which is just under 12 minutes long. It premiered at the Mayfly Film Festival in New York, and was then shown at the Indy Shorts Film Festival in July. It has been accepted into six film festivals.

“Al was actually a client for a corporate recruitment video series I was directing,” Michael said. “We hit it off and stayed in touch afterward. Eventually, he invited me out to film while he was

“Fly fishing happens to be my escape, a place I can go to that is a significant stress reliever and a place that allows me to do incredible thinking or no thinking at all — and just be at peace,” he said.

Cellphone rules harsh Editor, I’m a student that’s affected by the new cellphone laws and I just wanted to share my opinions on the (July 30 online) article about the details on the new cellphone laws, “Westfield student handbooks detail new cellphone ban.”

Firstly, the rules are harsh. They restrict cellphone usage in places where it never was a problem, like lunch.

Secondly, it “solves” a problem that was never an issue to begin with. The students who were on their phones don’t want to learn and won’t start

now that phones are banned.

This rule just punishes the people who weren’t on their phone, which is a lot more people than you think. For example, in all of my classes the teachers probably told people to get off their phones less than 10 times.

The board making this law just shows how disconnected they are to actual schools. I’m definitely biased against this but I think it’s still important to hear the other side of things.
