According to the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies Zachary Emmitt and Nathan Phillips have been named the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association’s Co-Correctional Officers of the Year, an honor recognizing outstanding professionalism and service within county correctional facilities.

The sheriff’s office announced the award in a statement congratulating the deputies on their achievement and praising their dedication to the profession.

“This prestigious honor is a testament to their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to excellence,” the sheriff’s office stated. “Their leadership, work ethic, and unwavering service make a positive impact every day and reflect the highest standards of our agency and the corrections profession.”

The Indiana Sheriffs’ Association is a nonprofit representing Indiana’s 92 county sheriffs and their departments.

Founded in 1930, the association promotes professionalism in law enforcement and corrections through training, education, legislative advocacy and recognition of outstanding service.

The association presents annual awards recognizing exceptional contributions by sheriffs, deputies and correctional officers from across the state. The Correctional Officer of the Year honor is among the organization’s top recognitions for jail personnel, highlighting individuals who demonstrate leadership, professionalism and a commitment to public safety within county detention facilities. Previous recipients have been recognized for setting high standards in corrections and serving as role models within their agencies.

Why I Started Carmel Salt Caves - A Journey in Wellness

Just days before Wellness Month begins, I quietly celebrate another anniversary — not the opening of Carmel Salt Caves & Spa, but the anniversary of the brain surgery that forever changed my life.

People often ask me one question: “Why did you create Carmel Salt Caves?” The answer has very little to do with salt.

Years ago, I underwent a ten-hour brain surgery to remove a tumor. What followed wasn’t simply recovery — it was rebuilding an entirely different life. There were days when standing felt impossible. Walking required determination. Balance disappeared. My confidence disappeared with it. For a long time, I kept waiting to feel “better.” Then one day I realized something profound. Wellness isn’t a destination. It’s a decision we make every single day. Not once. Every day.

My journey back wasn’t one dramatic breakthrough. It wasn’t one medication, one therapy, or one miracle. It was thousands of tiny choices. A healthier meal. A short walk.

Foundation seeks bold ideas with $1M grant

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com The Hendricks County Community Foundation is inviting local organizations to pursue ambitious ideas that could have a lasting impact on the county through a new $1 million grant opportunity.

The initiative, known as the Moonshot Grant, was unveiled July 30 during an event at MADE at Plainfield attended by more than 100 nonprofit representatives, community leaders and potential partners. The one-time funding opportunity is designed to support a largescale project that addresses significant community needs and creates longterm benefits for Hendricks County residents.

The grant is funded through a $3 million Community Support award the foundation received from Lilly Endowment Inc. as part of its GIFT IX initiative. While a portion of that funding will support other community priorities, the foundation has designated $1 million for what it describes as a transformational project.

Foundation leaders hope the program will inspire organizations to move beyond traditional approaches and develop collaborative solutions that could reshape the county’s future.

“We know that meaningful, lasting change requires bold thinking, strong partnerships, and the courage to pursue ambitious ideas,” said Eric Hessel, HCCF vice president of programs. “We are challenging our community to ask: ‘If you had $1 million, how would you make our community better?’ ” Projects can span one to three years, with implementation expected to begin sometime between March 2027 and January 2028. Although the foundation intends to award the full $1 million to a single proposal, officials said they reserve the option of dividing the funding among multiple projects if that approach better serves the community.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, government agencies, park districts and collaborative partnerships that serve Hendricks County. Foundation officials said proposals involving multiple organizations and cross-sector partnerships will receive stronger consideration than proj-

ects submitted by a single organization working independently.

The funding can be used for a variety of purposes, including expanding existing programs, launching new initiatives, supporting capital improvements or covering operating expenses directly related to the proposed project.

The application process will begin with a required Letter of Intent, which organizations may submit between Aug. 12 and Sept. 15. Following an initial review, selected applicants will be invited to complete full proposals between Oct. 28 and Jan. 26, 2027. The foundation expects to announce the recipient or recipients in March 2027.

Foundation President and CEO William Rhodehamel said the opportunity represents more than a financial investment.

“This opportunity is about far more than funding—it is about possibility,” Rhodehamel said. “We are grateful to Lilly Endowment Inc. for making this historic investment available to our community and we look forward to partnering with local visionaries to turn an ambitious idea into a lasting legacy for Hendricks County.”

Applicants may discuss ideas with Hessel before submitting a Letter of Intent, and detailed application materials, including eligibility requirements and proposal guidelines, are available through the Hendricks County Community Foundation.

Fire district, judicial center plans move forward

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com The Hendricks County Board of Commissioners approved updated purchasing guidelines, heard a proposal for a Liberty Township fire protection district and took the first step toward planning a new judicial center during its July 28 meeting.

Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution that replaces purchasing procedures that had been in place since 1998. The new policy allows department heads to enter contracts valued at up to $50,000 without commissioner approval, provided the contracts are reviewed by the county attorney and funded through approved budgets.

Liberty Township Trustee Brad Beller and attorney Mark Waterfield also presented a proposal to establish a fire protection district. Beller said the district would increase the township’s fire levy from 8 cents to a maximum of 20 cents, allowing the department to hire nine employees, provide full-time advanced life support ambulance coverage and

improve emergency response.

Beller said Liberty Township responded to 1,122 emergency calls in 2025, with about 68 percent involving EMS. He added that staffing shortages have occasionally left the department unable to respond to emergency calls.

“I like this idea because it can grow into the western part of the district in towns such as Amo, Coatesville, Stilesville and even New Winchester,” Beller said. “The other day there were seven runs in Liberty Township, believe it or not, in two hours. We had an ambulance from Avon sitting at our station on an EMS run because Plainfield was also pulled out. Plainfield only has three ambulances, so if two are on runs, you’re down to one in the whole southern part of the county.”

Commissioners took no action on the proposal but agreed to hear a more detailed presentation at their second meeting in August.

The board also voted to begin planning for a new judicial center on county-owned property near the Hendricks County Jail on the east side of Danville.

Tax credit workshop set news@youarecurrent.com Eligible military veterans and their families can learn about Indiana’s new property tax credit during a free informational workshop Aug. 29 at American Legion Colonel Billie J. Holmes Memorial Post 331.

The workshop begins at 1 p.m. at the post, 636 E. Main St., and will be presented by representatives from the Hendricks County Veterans Service Office and the Hendricks County Auditor’s Office. Organizers say the event is designed to help veterans understand eligibility requirements, available tax credits and the application process.

The property tax credit is available to veterans who have received at least a 10 percent service-connected disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In general, applicants must have lived in Indiana for at least one year, and the property receiving the

credit must be their primary residence.

Veterans 62 or older who served at least 90 days on active duty and were honorably discharged may qualify for a $250 annual credit. Those who also served during a qualifying period of hostilities may be eligible for an additional $350 credit, allowing some veterans to receive up to $600 in annual property tax relief.

Following the presentation, veterans service officers will meet individually with attendees to review eligibility and assist with filing paperwork through the county auditor’s office.

Veterans attending should bring a copy of their DD-214 and their most recent VA disability award letter. Surviving spouses who may qualify should bring the veteran’s DD-214, the latest VA disability award letter and the veteran’s death certificate.

The workshop is free and open to eligible veterans and their families.

Residents will have an opportunity to learn how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose during a free educational program Aug. 13 at the Brownsburg Public Library.

The program, “Recognizing and Responding to an Opioid Overdose,” will be from 6 to 7 p.m. in the library’s Roberts Room. Presented by the Hendricks County Health Department, the event is open to teens in grades 9-12 and adults.

Registration is required and closes at 5:30 p.m. on the day of the event.

The class is designed to help community members better understand opioid addiction while providing practical training on responding to an overdose using naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan. Naloxone is a nasal spray medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and restore breathing until emergency medical personnel arrive.

Danielle Spry, a registered nurse and school health liaison with the Hendricks County Health Department, said the presentation builds on the department’s growing outreach efforts throughout Hendricks County.

“This is an extension of some Narcan training we’ve been doing in the community,” Spry said.

During the hourlong session, participants will learn how to identify the signs of an opioid overdose, properly administer naloxone and understand the legal protections available to bystanders who provide emergency assistance.

“Opioid overdoses are unfortunately becoming more and more frequent in

our community,” Spry said. “During the class we will go over what an overdose is, how to recognize it, how to respond to it using Narcan, the different laws that will protect you as a bystander if you are to administer it, and different resources in the community to get Narcan for free.”

Spry said attendees will have the opportunity to practice using demonstration devices before receiving naloxone to take home.

“I have trainers for anyone to use, but I will also have some available they can take with them after the class,” she said.

The Brownsburg program is one of several monthly educational events the health department is hosting in partnership with local organizations. Previous presentations have focused on mental health, while upcoming sessions will cover topics such as immunizations and other public health concerns.

The department also offers training outside the library setting for schools, sports organizations and other community groups. Depending on the audience’s needs, presentations can include CPR, automated external defibrillator, or AED, instruction, emergency preparedness and naloxone administration.

“We’re still trying to get out there more,” Spry said. “Any community partners who want emergency preparedness training, we can do CPR training, Narcan training, AED training.”

Library officials said the program is part of their ongoing effort to connect residents with educational resources and community services. Admission is free, but advance registration is required through the Brownsburg Public Library.

Visit Hendricks County grant supports local projects

By Alicia Stivers alicia@youarecurrent.com Visit Hendricks County is accepting applications for a new grant program aimed at funding projects that improve community spaces while enhancing the visitor experience across the county.

The PLACES Initiative, which stands for Powering Local Authentic Community Experiences & Spaces, is the organization’s newest destination development effort.

The program supports projects that align with Visit Hendricks County’s Destination Defined strategic plan, which focuses on creating a community that appeals to both visitors and residents.

“We want to invest in the places and experiences that inspire people to visit and give residents even more reasons to enjoy where they live,” said Jaime Bohler Smith, executive director and CEO of Visit Hendricks County. “The PLACES Initiative reflects that commitment by helping bring those projects to life.”

The initiative is open to for-profit and

nonprofit organizations, municipalities, government entities and businesses. Eligible projects must be located in Hendricks County, and collaborative proposals are encouraged.

Funding may be awarded for a variety of projects, including public art, beautification efforts, accessibility improvements, wayfinding signage, recreation amenities, cultural programming, placemaking initiatives, agritourism projects, festivals and events.

Applications are due Oct. 9, with grant recipients expected to be announced in November. Some projects may require matching funds.

The PLACES Initiative builds on other programs introduced by Visit Hendricks County in 2026, including its For Real brand campaign and the CARE to Connect program, both designed to strengthen community identity while supporting tourism and economic development.

Police arrested two suspects in connection with the shooting in 2024: Tolbert and 17-year-old Jeremy Briscoe.

Briscoe was 15 at the time of the shooting, while Tolber was 18.

Briscoe was previously sentenced to 45 years in prison after also being convicted of murder.

Hendricks County Prosecutor Loren Delp said the sentence provides accountability, though it cannot erase the family’s loss.

“Today was about accountability, but no sentence can ever restore what Carlos’ family lost,” Delp said in a statement.

Pro tennis tournament schedule set news@youarecurrent.com Some of the world’s rising professional tennis players will take the court in Brownsburg as the inaugural Indiana Hardcourt Championships brings an ATP Challenger Tour event to Hendricks County.

The tournament will be held Aug. 10-16 at the Brownsburg Tennis Club, 1548 Odell St., and is expected to attract players from around the world competing for ATP ranking points and prize money. Tournament organizers say many competitors also will be looking to strengthen their rankings in hopes of earning entry into the U.S. Open later this month.

Tournament schedule: • Aug. 12-13: Singles and doubles competition continues, with four singles and four doubles matches scheduled each day.

• Aug. 14: Quarterfinal-round action in singles and doubles.

• Aug. 15: Singles semifinals and the doubles championship.

Organizers say the weeklong tournament is intended to be more than just a series of matches. The event is designed to showcase professional tennis while

promoting community involvement and growing the sport throughout Indiana.

According to the tournament’s website, the Ed Brune Fund was established to create opportunities for young people through tennis while promoting values such as sportsmanship, perseverance, respect and personal growth.

The tournament features a 32-player singles main draw, a 24-player qualifying draw and a 16-team doubles field on outdoor hard courts. Fans can expect to see a mix of rising professionals, experienced Challenger competitors, recent college standouts and players working toward careers on the ATP Tour.

After qualifying rounds and community events earlier in the week, the main draw begins Aug. 10 and continues through Championship Sunday on Aug. 16.

The Brownsburg Tennis Club will serve as the tournament’s home throughout the week. Organizers said the facility provides the infrastructure needed to host a professional event while connecting visiting athletes with local families, volunteers, schools and community partners.

The tournament also is expected to bring visitors to Brownsburg and the surrounding areas, with players, coaches, officials and spectators traveling to Hendricks County throughout the week.

State, national immigration debate comes to Fishers

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Two rallies with different messages about immigration were held Aug. 1, one at Holland Park in Fishers and the other at an undisclosed location – originally planned for Fishers, but reportedly moved on the day of the event.

The first event to be announced was a “mass deportation rally” hosted by Save Heritage Indiana and featuring speaker Greg Bovino, former chief of U.S. Border Patrol. The event was to have recorded messages from Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith and Attorney General Todd Rokita. Indiana Rep. Jim Lucas, a Seymour Republican, also was expected to attend, according to organizers.

In response to the Save Heritage event, Fishers Resists, a local organization that has hosted previous Immigration and Customs Enforcement demonstrations, put together a “Hoosier hospitality march” the same day, attracting a large crowd of participants who walked a loop between Holland Park and the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater.

Before the march, Indiana Sen. Fady Qaddoura, a Democrat representing District 30 – the north Indianapolis area – addressed the group. He said Hoosier hospitality is a promise that is being tested by groups like Save Heritage Indiana.

“What they are trying to do – they are

replacing slogans, uniforms and messages, but they are using the same playbook that played in Indiana over 100 years ago,” he said. “One hundred years ago, our state, unfortunately, had one of the largest organized hate groups in the country, where the KKK established headquarters and … claimed morality, claimed following scripture, claimed patriotism.”

Qaddoura asked participants to spread compassion, support their neighbors and vote.

When marchers arrived at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, additional speakers addressed the crowd as the weather threatened rain and thunderstorms. A single masked counterprotester was at the event and was surrounded by marchers who blocked his sign while mocking him. March organizers intervened and asked that he be allowed to exercise his right to free speech.

Current requested credentials to attend and cover the Save Heritage Indiana mass deportation rally, but the request was denied. Group founder Daniel Poynter posted an Aug. 4 statement on social media, claiming that the “sold out” event had 130 participants.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness released a statement Aug. 1, noting that the community has become a global destination for people to raise their families.

Fishers Police will be prepared to keep everyone safe and hold anyone accountable who does not follow the law.”

Fadness stated that the city will remain focused on “creating and sustaining one of the best communities in the country.”

Candidates for Indiana Senate District 31, which includes Fishers and Lawrence, weighed in on the rallies.

Kerry Forestal, the Democratic nominee, released a statement rejecting the Save Heritage Indiana message. He called for an immigration system that protects the nation’s borders while also protecting due process.

“America has both the right and the responsibility to secure its borders, enforce its laws and maintain an immigration system that is orderly, fair and accountable,” Forestal said. “But celebrating mass deportation is not a serious approach to public safety. It is a political spectacle built around fear and division, and it does not reflect the

values of Fishers or the country I have spent my life serving.”

Forestal is a former U.S. Marshal and is completing his second term as Marion County Sheriff. Forestal said immigration enforcement should focus resources on individuals who pose genuine threats to public safety, including violent offenders, human traffickers, and drug smugglers.

Senate District 31 Republican candidate Juanita Albright called the mass deportation rally “divisive.”

“America is a nation of laws and I firmly support our immigration laws and believe they need to be enforced,” she stated in an email to Current. “Our nation is a nation of immigrants — immigrants who obeyed the law and entered this country legally. Those who break these laws should be held accountable. However, (the) mass deportation rally in Fishers is divisive and serves no purpose other than to create fear. Hoosiers deserve thoughtful solutions, not political spectacles that inflame tensions.”

Alright stated that immigration laws can be enforced while treating people with dignity and respect. Albright is completing her first term on the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Board of Trustees.

DISPATCHES  Farmers Market to host Chamber Night — The Brownsburg Farmers Market will host Chamber Night from 4 to 7 p.m.

Aug. 13 at the Brownsburg Town Hall Green, 61 N. The Indiana Lions’ annual Brian’s Trike Race returns Sept. 12 after a twoyear hiatus. The event raises money for the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

The race was paused in 2024 because of the construction of a new combined campus for the Indiana School for the Deaf and Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Donations go toward resources for students to help them prepare for independent living.

Brian’s Trike Race will be at 2701 N. Devon Ave. in Indianapolis. All teams must be registered and have paid the $100 entry fee by Aug. 15.

Teams of four compete on adult-sized tricycles in a tournament-style competition. Participants do not have to be Lions Club members, but they must be at least 14 years old.

“We have people who do come and just watch and cheer the riders on,” said Linda Scott, co-chair of Brian’s Trike Race. “They have a good time laughing at all the adults on the tricycles racing

like crazy.”

The event was created in 1996 by Brian Hellerman as a fundraiser for the Washington Township Lions Club. It was renamed in Hellerman’s honor following his death before the second race.

RUNNING WITH PURPOSE Documentary honors late father’s lifelong philosophy

By Piper Bailey Piper@youarecurrent.com For the late Ralph Hartnagel III, the principles of faith, family, friends, fitness and fun were more than simply words. They inspired him to “stay positive” throughout his life and his fight against cancer.

A Brownsburg resident, Ralph was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in January 2017 and died Sept.

26, 2023, at age 65. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ball State University and taught business at Avon High School for 37 years. He helped establish the school’s DECA club and coached baseball for many years before coaching Brownsburg Little League while raising his three sons.

“Stay Positive” later became the foundation — and the name — of a documentary of Ralph’s son Michael Hartnagel’s run across Indiana in honor of his father’s life philosophy. “‘Stay Positive’ doesn’t just mean that you’re always happy,” said Michael, 31, a Whitestown resident. “Through those challenges, you find a way to focus on gratitude, you focus on family, you find a way to see joy in areas where it’s hard to see joy.”

Running became a way the pair stayed connected. After Ralph began a daily running streak during the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael continued the tradition when his father was hospitalized at IU Health’s Simon Cancer Center. As Ralph’s health declined, the two planned their biggest challenge yet: A 157-mile run across Indiana scheduled for Sept. 28-30, 2023. “(The film crew and I) had no pre-production plan. We had no idea what we were going to shoot,” Michael said. “We knew that we just wanted to document it.”

Hours before the film crew arrived and two days before the run, Ralph died.

Instead of canceling the challenge, Michael chose to finish what he and his father had started. The run began in Richmond near the Ohio state line and ended at the Illinois border.

ed I was, it would never compare to what my dad had to go through,” Michael said.

Michael ran more than 50 miles a day to reach the goal. On the second day, he passed through Avon and ran across the Brownsburg High School football field before a game. Before the game, there was a moment of silence honoring the decades Ralph spent as a community mentor, coach and leader.

HOKA supported the run and the Hartnagel family by providing running gear featuring “Stay Positive” logos. In total, the challenge surpassed Michael’s fundraising goal of $5,000 by raising more than $50,000.

The documentary was filmed and produced by one of Michael’s best friends and fellow BHS graduate, Isaac Roy. The run was combined with interviews and

family videos to create a documentary centered on Ralph’s “Stay Positive” philosophy.

After almost two years of editing by Blake Wilson and Barefoot Film House, the short film was released on YouTube on what would have been Ralph’s 67th birthday. “Stay Positive” screened at the Indy Film Festival in May and the Heartland Film Festival in July, and can be watched on Michael’s YouTube channel.

The Hartnagels founded Metastatic Mission, a nonprofit established in Ralph’s honor, to raise money for prostate cancer research. The mission has raised more than $23,000 since its creation in 2023. It supports cancer patients with care packages, “Stay Positive” hoodies and promotes education on prostate cancer.

“Life is going to be hard,” Michael said. “You’re going to be dealing with hard issues at work, you’re going to be faced with some sort of medical diagnosis or something like that. But through those challenges, you can still find joy.

You can still find a way to get back up, to keep fighting, to keep putting one foot in front of the other.”

Nearly three years after Ralph’s death, his philosophy continues to guide his family on its mission of helping others and moving forward, one step at a time.

Musical set for The Tarkington

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The adage of writing what you know seemed appropriate for Dr. Jeff Foy. An emergency room physician in Indianapolis, he always thought the ER would be an ideal setting for a musical.

“I thought it would be awesome if I could be the one to tell that story,” he said.

But he didn’t think it could happen because he can’t play or write music.

When hearing his then-15-year-old son Jacob Foy work on a melody in his room, the 53-year-old Fishers resident had an idea that they could work together.

The Foys will stage their largest production yet of “Emergency The Musical,” with five performances Aug. 27-30 at The Tarkington at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

There was a performance in Bloomington in 2018, which Jacob developed as an independent project when he attended Indiana University.

That was followed by three performances at the New York Theater Festival.

“Since the New York production, we’ve added five new songs,” Jeff said. “The first-act closer is new. We have obviously changed some of the storylines and some of the dialog to accommodate the new songs. I think it’s more streamlined of a show with strong character development.”

A 2017 Fishers High School graduate and a Carmel resident, Jacob wrote all the music. Father and son wrote the lyrics and script together.

“We got started when I was 15 or 16, and that’s a hard age for any boy in their parents’ relationship because you’re trying to find your independence and find out who you are, so it was fun for us to connect back then,” Jacob said. “Then it’s given us a really good avenue to maintain a really fun aspect in our relationship. It’s easy when your dad is your co-writing part-

ner because you already have a level of comfortability that you need for a good collaboration. We understand each other’s tastes and what we think is going to work well.”

The plot in the ER centers on intern Justin Marks having one shift to prove himself because he didn’t match into a residency program.

“He is going against his med school rival on the same night for that one spot, so they are competing against one another,” Jacob said.

Cole Winston, who performed in the IU production, returns in the role of Justin. Robbie Russo, another IU student who was in the original production, also returns.

The cast has 30 members, larger than the 14 in the New York performances. None of the returning cast members performed in the New York production.

“I’m looking forward to having a big cast for the first time,” Jacob said.

“There is a lot of ensemble singing in the show. The other thing I’m most excited for is just to share it with the community. We got a lot of support from Hoosiers, in general. When we started this in Bloomington, people came from all over the state to see it.

Then people came from Indiana to

New York to see it. We had people help us out all over the state.”

Jeff said many community members told him they wanted to see the production when it came to the area.

“It’s really rewarding and exciting to bring it here, so people can see what we’ve been working on since 2015,” he said. “I’m also excited to debut the five new songs. I’m excited to see how these songs feel and sound and mesh with the show.”

Jeff’s sister, Melissa Stainbrook, is the music director. She is a Brownsburg High School choir teacher. Her daughter, Madison Stainbrook, is in the ensemble.

Olivia Broadwater, a 2020 Zionsville Community High School graduate, plays Gina.

“I love the role of Gina because she supplies comic relief in a very serious environment,” Broadwater said. “She clearly doesn’t fit into the usual role of an ER worker, but Gina loves to stand out. I’m excited to work on making her bubbly personality believable in this workplace so that she seems real and relatable.”

Naptown Hepcats, an Indiana-based rockabilly band, will be spotlighted in the Local Mix Music Series at The Studio Theater at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel Aug. 14.

Drummer Terry Fox and bassist Mike Strauss are Carmel residents. Vocalist-guitarist Spencer Mitchell resides in Fishers. They look forward to the performance.

“We’ve played Carmel Porchfest the past couple of years, and we’ve played (the) Noblesville (Front Porch Music Festival) the last couple of years,” Mitchell said. “So, we’ve had our presence in the community, but to be highlighted by such a prominent show is going to be new to us, and we’re excited about that.”

The band started as a tribute to Stray Cats, a three-musician rockabilly band formed in 1979 consisting of Brian Setzer, Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom. Naptown Hepcats now perform original music, though they’ve stayed within the genre.

Casting for calm

Al White still remembers hearing his sister’s scream when he got the call that their grandfather had been brutally murdered in New York.

“I lost other family members to violent crime,” said White, who was 9 years old and living in Dover, Del., at the time. “My father was in and out of lockup. I had my own challenges as a result and made some wrong decisions.”

In 2020, the 56-year-old Carmel resident found fly fishing to be a peaceful hobby that proved cathartic. It then became the basis for McCordsville resident Grant Michael’s short film “On the Stream,” which is just under 12 minutes long. It premiered at the Mayfly Film Festival in New York, and was then shown at the Indy Shorts Film Festival in July. It has been accepted into six film festivals.

“Al was actually a client for a corporate recruitment video series I was directing,” Michael said. “We hit it off and stayed in touch afterward. Eventually, he invited me out to film while he was

fly fishing. The more time I spent with him, the more he opened up about what that time on the water meant to him and how his childhood shaped who he became. That’s when I knew there was a film here.”

Michael said the story is about how nature provides space to process life.

White is certain fly fishing or an outdoor pastime can help others.

“Fly fishing happens to be my escape, a place I can go to that is a significant stress reliever and a place that allows me to do incredible thinking or no thinking at all — and just be at peace,” he said.

Priceless cheap advice Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I just discovered a website for cheap skates, advice and tips for penny-pinching skinflints who will do anything to save a buck. They also sell a book for cheap people, but it’s $29.95, so I don’t see it making the bestseller list. Of course, I didn’t think the book “Learn to Read” would ever take off, either.

Growing up, I bought stuff at a place called the five and dime. Now, I buy at the dollar store. I’m beating myself up for not stocking up while I had the chance.

Who knew?

In high school, I’d hear guys talking about a girl with a reputation for being cheap. I assumed that meant she wouldn’t split the cost of the date, so I never asked those girls out. Then I found out what it really meant, and I am kicking myself. And they say talk is cheap. Here’s proof: While I am paid a nominal fee for putting these columns in print, if I stopped you in the street and told you my jokes, you wouldn’t pay me a dime. Now who’s cheap?

Cheaper by the dozen is another expression you often hear. I thought it sounded unlikely, and sure enough, I got laughed out of a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop when I insisted on paying less for a dozen doughnuts than for one. And what about, “Two can live as cheaply as one”? That notion motivated me to get mar-

ried back in 1980.

My wife thinks I’m cheap because I don’t want to go into an expensive restaurant with her and blow $100 for dinner. If I believed in tipping, it would be even more expensive.

Of course, if I were really cheap, I wouldn’t waste money as I do. I don’t turn off the lights when I leave a room, and I sometimes leave the front door open in the dead of winter. I also throw out leftovers because I don’t want to take the time to put the food in Tupperware. My wife says this shows that I’m lazy, spacey and not very smart. Say, who asked you to nod your head?

Of course, I think my wife is cheap. She clips coupons and shops during sales. She says that is frugal, not cheap. Say, what is it with the head nodding?

That’s about all I have to say about being cheap. Next time you see me, please say hello. I may be behind you when you pull out of your parking space. That is, if you’ve left a few minutes on the meter.
