After eight years at Janus Developmental Services and a career in the nonprofit field, Noblesville resident DebREFLECTION bie Laird will retire May 22 from her position of senior vice president of development.

Janus, 1555 Westfield Rd., Noblesville, provides individuals with disabilities opportunies to participate and contribute within the community through day services and programs. The organization serves clients throughout Hamilton County.

Laird’s proudest moments include bringing awareness to individuals with disabilities making a positive impact.

“Every person has different abilities, and I think part of the thing I’m most proud of is our community realizing that people who have diagnosed disabilities can also do many positive things,” Laird said.

“Through the community lunches once a month where people come to Janus to tour the facility, receive an overview of all our programs and services and enjoy a lunch prepared by clients and served by clients – these are clients interested in a catering position or working in a restaurant – and that’s just a firsthand view of somebody with a disability who excels.”

Laird also is pleased that Janus has a higher profile in the community.

“One other thing I’m really proud of, too, is just the fact that when I say I work at Janus, people understand what Janus is,” Laird said. “When I first started here, the first question I’d have was, ‘Janus? What does Janus do?’ We have worked very hard to increase name awareness of what Janus is and what we are able to do.

“Now, I don’t get that question anymore.”

In retirement, Laird plans to travel more with her husband, Mike, who is already retired. She also plans to increase her volunteer work with the Westfield Youth Assistance Program.

“I’m a mentor for them and I want to have an increased number of hours there,” she said. “I also want to do more in my church, Northview.”

Laird plans to participate more in the foundation she and Mike manage – the Jake Laird Memorial Fund. It was created in 2004 in memory of their son, Jake Laird, who was an Indianapolis Police Dept. officer killed in the line of duty. The foundation provides funds to police and fire departments for new equipment, new instructional programs or financial assistance to those injured in the line of duty.

Laird also will continue her hobbies of bicycling, gardening and walking trails.

“I think the best part of retirement, or what I can imagine of retirement, is the freedom to just go do whatever when I want to,” she said.

Hamilton County Democratic Women to meet – The Hamilton County Democratic Women group meets the third Saturday of each month at the Delaware Township Government Building, 9090 E. 131st St. The next meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

March 21. Attendees should bring two canned good items.

Tiernon recognized – Anne-Marie Tiernon, a local news anchor, recently was recognized by the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple.

She received the Service to Mankind Award for her service to several charities in central Indiana.

Conner receives award – Ben Conner, a Fishers resident and CEO of Indianapolis-based employee benefits firm Conner Insurance, received the 2020 Summit Award at ASCEND, the annual meeting of the Association for Insurance Leadership held in Dallas, Texas, Jan. 9-12. The award recognizes those who have achieved notable success as a NextGeneration Benefits Firm that delivers improved and cost-effective employee benefits to its employer clients.

SWCD offers native plants and ran barrels – The Hamilton County Soil & Water Conservation District will sell native plant kits with 50 native plant plugs for $125.

Fishers student travels to D.C. – The Indiana Connections Academy recently took five students to Washington, D.C. to participate in the 2020 LEAD (Leadership Experience and Development) Conference. Among those was Humza Akhtar of Fishers, a ninth-grade student and National Junior Honor Society vice president of the Indiana Connections Academy chapter.

The annual conference is a time for students participating in the National Honor Society to meet students from across the nation, attend workshops and brainstorm student leadership.

F.C. Tucker stats – In January 2020, the Fishers market took a turn in favor of home buyers. According to F.C. Tucker Company, Fishers home prices decreased by 11.5 percent compared to January 2019 – to an average sale price of $293,963. The average price per square foot for Fishers homes also decreased by 3.3 percent, to $122.48. Homes spent an average of 43 days on the market, selling 6.5 percent faster than this time last year.

Graduate profile: Ethan Meier

By Desiree Williams news@currentinfishers.com Ethan Meier, 25, graduated from Hamilton Southeastern High School in 2015. He will complete a master’s degree in EDUCATION biology at IUPUI in May and then pursue a doctorate of dental medicine at Midwestern University in the fall.

Q: What was your favorite subject in high school and why?

A: Biology. Growing up, I had always been intrigued by the biological world. I found myself enjoying my general science courses more than my other subjects, but learning about the natural sciences really piqued my interests.

Q: What do you miss about high school?

A: The personalized education that you can receive in a smaller classroom. After attending a large university like Indiana University, you miss the more direct teaching that you receive in high school rather than sitting in a lecture hall with 300-plus students.

Q: Tell me more about your current role.

A: While I am attending IUPUI for my master’s degree, I am currently working at an oral surgery clinic in Anderson. I enjoy balancing my time at school with my time at work.

Q: What’s next for you?

A: I will be spending the next four years completing the doctorate of dental medicine degree at Midwestern University. I am thrilled to begin this program, as becoming a dentist has been a dream of mine since I was young. Being able to pursue this career choice has been very challenging, but I could not be happier with myself for getting this far. I am looking forward to practicing in the dental field and helping the members of the community.

Q: Who has been your most influential teacher throughout school and why?

A: Cathy Glick. Mrs. Glick first introduced me to my first more rigorous biology class, which was AP Biology. She did such a good job of teaching the material and making sure that we all understood the material before moving on. She helped my future interest in the biological field, which continued throughout my collegiate experience.

Q: Can you tell me about your collegiate experiences?

A: I attended Indiana University for my undergraduate studies. I majored in biology and

minored in chemistry. I joined a fraternity my freshman year and became involved in several different committees within the house. I really enjoyed my experience at Indiana University.

I loved everything from the beautiful campus to the enriching education that I received at this school. I believe that being involved with some organization or club is important at a large university. It helps you develop relationships early on while also making the school feel much smaller.

Q: Do you have any advice for younger students?

A: The best advice I can give younger students is to learn to effectively balance your free time. Time management is a crucial thing to develop to be successful in your undergraduate studies. There will be a lot of distractions and fun activities to be involved in while in college, and maintaining a good balance can really be beneficial. I found it important to use your free time to do the things that you enjoy doing.

Eman School students advance to nationals

By Renee Larr news@currentinfishers.com Two student teams from Eman School in Fishers recently competed at the State of Indiana Academic WorldCOMPETITION quest Competition.

On Feb. 23, one of the two teams finished first out of 16 and will compete at the national level through the April 24-25 World Affairs Council of America.

Eman School is a private Islamic school where students study Arabic, Islamic Studies and the Quran.

“We’re accredited through the state of Indiana, so we have to do everything public schools do,” Principal Mia Sankari said. “But we also teach Islamic curriculum.”

Academic Worldquest Competition is a current affairs-type quiz bowl.

“The event is about current affairs going on in the world but also about policies made within the last year or so,” Sankari said.

The students were given a list of topics in September 2019 and spent five months studying to prepare. Topics are chosen by the World Affairs Council of America and based on the most relevant global issues of

Fishers teen competes for LLS designation

By Chris Bavender news@currentinfishers.com A Fishers teen is vying for a prestigious honor – the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Student of the FUNDRAISER Year. Maddie Wirth, a senior at Cathedral High School, was nominated by a previous candidate who asked if she was “up for the challenge.”

“I’d always seen the Student of the Year (program) on social media from different kids running in the past,” Wirth said. “I decided to take on this challenge to continue the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s great efforts.”

Students of the Year is a philanthropic leadership development program where students use professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing and project management to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Students can compete as individuals or as part of a team. The title is awarded to the student or students who raise the most funds during a seven-week period.

Many of the students raise money in honor of a patient who is battling or is in remission from a blood cancer.

Wirth, who is competing as an individual and as part of a team, wants to raise $50,000.

A PLACE TO MAKE

Joel Bruns has noticed the emergence of energy and innovaCOVER STORY tion in Fishers with regard to entrepreneurship and makerspaces, so he organized a panel discussion focused on those topics.

Bruns, the innovation specialist at Westfield High School and creator of the school’s makerspace, held a Feb. 11 Maker Town Hall at Hamilton East Public Library, 5 Municipal Dr., Fishers, with several key players.

A makerspace is a collaborative work space designed for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high-tech to no-tech tools.

Panelists included Aili McGill, executive director of Nickel Plate Arts; John Wechsler, founder of Launch Fishers; Katelyn Coyne, manager of the Ignite Studio in the Hamilton East Public Library’s Fishers branch; David Decker, founder of Hub and Spoke, a design center, coworking space and makerspace at 106th Street and the future Nickel Plate Trail in Fishers; and Megan Baumgartner, City of Fishers director of economic development.

They discussed a wide range of makerspace topics, including defining what a maker is.

McGill noted that most artists worked alone prior to the emergence of makerspaces in Hamilton County.

“Because Indiana is not known as a hotbed for the arts, we had tens of dozens of arts professionals working here but working in isolation,” McGill said. “A huge percentage of the creative economy in Indiana are independent contractors, and it became clear once we started investing in resources, everything was going to take off.

“It also was clear there’s been a real hunger in igniting the maker community.”

Although makerspaces are expanding throughout Hamilton County, such as Ignite Studio in the HEPL basement and the soon-to-open Hub and Spoke, McGill said there’s still work to be done.

“There are still so many holes out there of things and resources we need, finding places where people can access tools they can share and use on a production level,” McGill said. “(It) is something we still haven’t quite gotten online in this community.”

Coyne said during the 18 months Ignite Studio has been open, artists have significantly benefitted from networking opportunities.

“We’ve seen the artists in the community be able to connect to the larger percentage of people who maybe don’t

identify immediately as the creative type,” she said. “They are sharing their process and working with the community to bring in different types of creative processes, exposing people to the idea that they can incorporate the same type of creativity in their work or start to see themselves as makers and creatives.

“Once you get out of grade school, you tend to lose that sense of risk-taking and willingness to self-identify as a creative type or as an artist.”

Besides artists, the maker movement also benefits communities.

“From the city’s perspective, what’s

been really interesting is having these resources has been an economic development strategy,” Baumgartner said.

“There are companies having memberships at Launch Fishers or at the Internet of Things Lab that are part of really big corporate structures where they see the value of having key people located in a coworking space or makerspace where they are surrounded by ideas and innovation.

“Being able to immerse yourself in something like that only continues to grow the culture here. There is a space here where somebody can pursue their passions.”

CREATING AN ECOSYSTEM During the Feb. 11 Maker Town Hall panel, Launch Fishers founder John Wechsler and Hub and Spoke founder David Decker spoke about the ecosystem, which evolves when a community comes together in a coworking or a makerspace.

“Connectedness matters, and it matters in way more ways than we really understand today,” Wechsler said. “It’s something that matters in our community and bringing it together. If we all come at this from the greater-good perspective, I think it can really transform our community.”

Decker said there is tremendous value in a makerspace ecosystem, such as what

Hub and Spoke will provide. Hub and Spoke will have a design center, a coworking component and a makerspace.

“It’s about helping kids and adults find their purpose and passion later in life,” Decker said. “There’s this opportunity for kids where kids are going to college and either dropping out with debt or graduating and coming out with a degree and saying, ‘You know what? I hate this field.’

How do we help them?

“It’s really experience and creating, and it’s expanded from there into this community campus concept.”

Correctly identify cause, effect

Commentary by Terry Anker Every would-be sixth-grade math prodigy knows the pain. If the answer on our test is accurate, why does the teacher need to see the long-form effort that got us there? Don’t they believe that we just “knew” it? Do they think we are cheating off a nearby student? Many of us have fought the battle. We stand peering over the teacher’s desk demanding credit for our genius. Calmly, they respond that sometimes it is not good enough to simply get the correct answer. We must get there the right way – at the right time – and follow the right steps.

We are reminded of our nascent school days when we were expected to “show our work” on the way to our ultimate and definitive response. At the time, it seemed redundant, even silly.

Recess was waiting and then lunch after that. Besides, we’d heard that it was tater tot day. If it took too long to finish our test, we’d be at the end of the line and might miss the potato-based delicacy. Besides, a tater tot war would invariably break out and we’d be unarmed.

The grapes from the fruit cocktail make a poor strategic substitute.

Happily, as we grow older, our lunchroom habits largely improve. And for most of us, we come to understand and accept as apparent that the goal of showing our work was to train a process of critical thinking. We had to fully understand the accepted process before we could innovate from it. Indeed, our accuracy increased as the steps were individually considered, implemented and mastered. But as we review our grown-up selves, do our marriages, careers and other relationships demonstrate that we are showing our work?

Do we make it evident that others are valued, considered and accommodated in our lives?

Giving up phoning it in Commentary by Danielle Wilson How are your New Year’s resolutions going? I deliberately did not make any because, historically, by March HUMOR I have failed miserably. Take my 2014 vow to limit my potty mouth: I didn’t even get to Valentine’s Day before I was back to dropping hourly F-bombs, among other swear words. Nope, for me, NYRs are self-created entrapment schemes for failure and self-loathing. Naturally, I avoid them at all costs.

Lent, however, is a whole ‘nother ball game. I am the queen of giving up Diet Coke or dark chocolate or cherry Pop-Tarts for the 40 days leading up to Easter. Nothing life-changing (see stupid NYRs above) but always something that hurts a little. This year’s “sacrifice?” Games on my phone. I know, I know. Doesn’t sound like much, does it? But I’ve gotten into the habit of coming home from work and ignoring people, pets and associated responsibilities and escaping into the world of online happiness, namely Soduku and Words with

Friends. I would literally waste hours trying to find the maximum scoring word from four vowels, two Ds and an X, or attempting to break seven minutes on an expert-level Soduku puzzle without typing in notes. Top that!

And I’d gotten to the point where I actually craved the experience. Like a crack addict with my fix, if someone interrupted me, I’d pretend I didn’t hear. “Mom, you said dinner would be ready 30 minutes ago.” (No response).“Mom!” (Umm, I’m playing on my phone). “Mother!” (Fine, I’ll engage). Then I’d sulk to the kitchen muttering, “You’re 16, go$da**it! Make your own f#$%ing mac-n-cheese!”

New Year’s resolutions? Clearly not for me.

Editor, Unfortunately, the erroneous thinking about “climate crisis” revealed in James Henderson’s letter to the editor is held by too many people.

His incorrect thinking is not so much in the fact that our planet may be experiencing a slight rise in global temperature, but rather that he attributes it to us! Whatever infinitesimal part of this temperature change is due to humankind, China, with its lack of environmental controls on polluting factories, is far and away the worst culprit.

But the real reason for climate fluctuations lies in the fact that God has entrusted to us a “live” planet. We have a molten core, active volcanoes, earthquakes, huge forest fires and shifting of tectonic plates that can cause tsunamis. Due to our planet’s tilt and rotation, the sun heats and cools it over and over, century after century.

Thousands of years ago, a glacier covered much of North America. What caused it to melt when there was no population here?

We need to take care of this planet.

It’s the only one we’ve got! But we must correctly identify cause and effect.

Shticky interview situations Commentary by Dick Wolfsie This is my 40th year working in television. Seems like just yesterday I had no idea which camera to look into and no clue what I was going to say next. Wait, HUMOR that was yesterday!

After conducting almost 5,000 interviews, it’s tough to name my favorites. Several standouts involved some shtick, which is a glorious Yiddish word that connotes comic theatrics, a gimmick or a setup to temporarily fool the audience.

Here are two of my wackiest moments: The long and short of it Back in the ’90s, I interviewed a jockey who was racing that night at Hoosier Park in Anderson. The young rider let me question him while he was standing on a chair with the camera only showing him from the waist-up — the premise being that he was the world’s tallest jockey, at about 6-foot-7.

He rode the comedy sketch like a pro.

“Why did you become a jockey?” I asked him.

“I was really bad at basketball,” he confessed, “but I loved horseback riding.”

I didn’t reveal the ruse until my last segment on that morning’s news, but the owner of the horse never saw that portion.

She also had never met her new jockey. She called the track in a panic, and to this day I don’t know if she found the prank funny.

I do know that tall-in-the-saddle was not what she was looking for!

I made a request that I never expected him to grant: I asked if we could walk into a room and act like we didn’t notice a couple still in bed (those two people would be friends of mine who agreed to participate in the fun). While we did the interview, there was no hanky-panky going on, of course, but my friends kept peeking out from the covers, feigning curiosity about what we were doing in their room.

The next day, viewers approached me and asked if I knew there were people in bed behind me. I told them yes, they were friends of mine, and that they like having an audience.

They plan to coach chefs on creating successful businesses and integrating larger teams into their operations.

“Far too often restaurants can languish in the startup phase, so we will be helping these chefs build procedures and systems to standardize how they operate, creating cultures for success,” Brown stated.

Mayor Scott Fadness said the city plans to give the new chefs as much support as possible.

“Neal and Greg have a demonstrated record of success as restaurateurs, and their expertise and mentorship will be invaluable to the startup culinary scene in Fishers,” Fadness stated.

Mourning morning heel pain?

Stabbing, aching, sharp shooting and feeling like a stone bruise. These are some of the terms patients use to describe heel pain, especially on their first few steps out of bed or off the couch at the end of the day. The symptoms usually happen when there are mechanical issues with their feet, or they have added stress in some way.

Plantar fasciitis (plantar fash-e-ite-is) is the most common heel pain diagnosis. It is caused by excessive physical stress to the plantar fascia (fasha), a strong, widethick ligament that stretches from the heel to the ball of the foot.

Pain is often worse after any amount of rest because the fascia contracts when at rest from a physically demanding activity. When weight is placed on the foot it naturally wants to flatten out, but the tight fascia does not want to stretch out adequately. This leads to over-pulling on the heel bone where it attaches or sometimes the arch, and this is what causes the intense pain.

Plantar fasciitis can be caused by one or a combination of the following: • poor foot mechanics

• tight calf muscles • weight gain • prolonged stance or walking • uneven terrain • shoes without support • new exercise routine • excessive bare foot walking Untreated for several months, the inflamed tissue then thickens like scar tissue. Most patients respond very well to conservative treatment with less than 3% requiring surgical intervention.

Treatment begins by determining the cause and may include orthotics, cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory medications, MLS Laser Therapy, shoe education, splinting, lifestyle changes and physical therapy.

The longer and more intense the symptoms have been present then usually the more aggressive the treatment needs to be.

Fifteen years after its creation, the annual Women of Vision fundraising event is seeing a few changes this year.

EVENT On April 29, Riverview Health Foundation will present the annual event at Marriott Hotel at Keystone at the Crossing. Traditionally, the event has been a luncheon, but this year, it will be a dinner. In addition, Megan Wiles, executive director of the foundation, said she hopes more men will be involved.

The keynote speaker is Minda Dentler, a wheelchair athlete and polio survivor.

“Each year, we look for inspirational speakers,” Wiles said. “Minda was recommended to us and after we did some research, and we thought she had a great message of perseverance, overcoming challenges and the will and determination to accomplish her goals.

“We thought her message would resonate with both men and women.”

The Women of Vision group was created after Riverview Health opened its women’s pavilion at the Noblesville campus.

HSE seniors take on their biggest roles in ‘Annie’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Hamilton Southeastern High School senior Austin Henkel hadn’t even seen a version of “Annie” before auditions.

On top of that, Henkel MUSICAL hadn’t been in a musical since junior high.

Still, Henkel is taking on the challenge of playing billionaire Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks in his largest role.

“The best part of portraying Oliver Warbucks Henkel is trying to come across understanding at the right times while still having that abrasive rough edge that he has because he’s not socially aware of what other people are dealing with in the time period (1933 during the Great Depression),” Henkel said.

The school production of “Annie” is set for 7 p.m. March 12 to 14.

“It’s a lot of fun to get back into musicals after being away from it for so long,” Henkel said. “I enjoy acting but I’m also part of the choirs, so it’s not foreign to me.”

A baritone, Henkel said some of the notes are a little high for him.

“The directors have allowed me to work on it and get better,” he said.

Henkel hadn’t seen the film until watching the 1999 version.

“I watched it during the audition process to get a better grasp,” Henkel said.

Senior Tori Niemeier plays the title role of Annie, her first lead role at HSE. “I love the music in it, so it’s something I already knew pretty well coming into it,” said Niemeier, who will wear a red wig in what Niemeier is her first lead role. “The best part is meeting new people and getting closer to everyone.

“The responsibility is fun, too. I like learning new songs and dancing.”

Niemeier’s favorite song is “It’s The HardKnock Life.”

“There are so many different versions of ‘Annie.’ I think everyone will like it,” she said.

Senior Izzy Hiott plays Miss Hannigan, who runs the orphanage.

“She is such an iconic role,” Hiott said. “It’s been a fun time to portray her in different ways instead of Hiott just some mean lady who just hates children because that couldn’t be farther from myself. I’m very grateful to get to play her.”

Hiott has watched Carol Burnett’s portrayal of Miss Hannigan in the 1982 movie.

“She’s amazing. I took a lot of inspiration from her,” Hiott said.

Hiott has been in every school musical since her freshman year, but this is her first lead role.

“I’ve had so much fun and it’s been such an amazing experience,” she said.

Hiott plans to major in elementary education and minor in theater education at the

University of Southern Indiana.

“I want to keep theater a part of my life,” she said.

Junior Kamaiah Norris plays Warbucks’ personal assistant, Grace Farrell.

“I love how classy Grace is,” Norris said. “I’m more extra about my style. Grace is more classy and elegant. I love how she expresses herNorris self in such a poised way.”

Norris said her favorite song is “I Think I’m Gonna Like it Here” because Annie is being introduced to a new environment.

Director Ethan Mathias said the school hasn’t presented “Annie” in more than a decade.

“With everything going on in the world, having a show about hope and a little girl being optimistic about stuff is refreshing,” Mathias said. “It’s a classic and everyone knows the songs.”

Mathias’ wife, Devan, is directing the choreography.

Matt Kraft is making his return to acting in a special way.

Kraft, a 2009 Carmel High School graduate and 2013 Purdue graduate, will THEATER appear in a lead role in Civic Theatre’s production of “A Few Good Men” March 13 to 28 at The Tarkington at the Center for Performing Arts in Carmel.

“I didn’t figure out I was interested in acting until I was in college,” said Kraft, a Carmel resident who works in Carmel in apartment leasing. “I had some theater credits while working on a film degree and got the acting bug.”

Kraft recently moved from California and wanted to get back into acting in plays.

Kraft plays Lt. Daniel Kaffee, a lawyer defending the two young Marines who are accused of murdering fellow Marine William Santiago.

“At first, it’s me unwillingly taking the case and then me getting drawn in deeper and deeper,” Kraft said. “As I get in over my head, I have to get out of it.”

Anna’s take: I remember growing up in Westfield and going to Jan’s Village Pizza after Westfield High School football games for pizza and soda. A decade later, the little pizzeria is still the same, with red-and-white checked tablecloths and an expansive menu.

I am not a big fan of thick crust, so I appreciate the crunchy thin crust of the pizzas. I also am not your typical pepperoni-and-sausage gal. I like a little variety, so the Med-

Tracing Rome’s Spanish Steps Commentary by Don Knebel The Spanish Steps constitute the widest stairway in Europe. To find them, you go to Rome and look for a French TRAVEL church.

In 1494, Francis of Paola, a Christian hermit, established the monastic Order of Minims and built a monastery atop Pincian Hill in what was then the northeastern corner of Rome. In 1502, King Louis XII of France began building a church next to the monastery that became known as Trinità dei Monti (Trinity of the Hill). In 1647, the Spanish government moved its embassy to the Holy See, considered the oldest embassy in the world, to the base of Pincian Hill. The embassy became known as the Palazzo di Spagna (the Palace of Spain) and the nearby public square became known as Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square). The square became popular, attracting people from throughout Rome to elaborate events held by the embassy.

In 1659, France and Spain signed a treaty ending the Franco-Spanish War. A year later, Stefano Gueffier, a French diplomat, bequeathed 20,000 scudi to connect the Span-

As a result, the Spanish Steps became a popular place for people from throughout Rome to meet and linger. In 1995, after a major restoration, an ordinance prohibited eating on the Spanish Steps. Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls reign as NBA champions while MTV is still playing music videos.

Now that we’re together at the end of the 20th century, let’s talk about “irony” and “coincidence.” I’m sure you know where I’m

going with this. Canadian songwriter Alanis Morissette dropped this little number on us in her album “Jagged Little Pill,” called “Ironic.” The problem is, the song “Ironic” includes several examples of coincidence.

“Irony” is a situation where there is a striking contrast between expectation and reality. Think about a vegan who can’t bear to part with her worn-in leather jacket or an IndyCar driver who doesn’t have a driver’s license. Other examples of irony include a barista who doesn’t like coffee or the fact that Dr. James Naismith, who invented basketball, is the only Kansas University basketball coach with a losing record. Isn’t it ironic?

The project is located from 96th Street to Olio Road Trail in Fall Creek Township, Hamilton County, Indiana.

Under the preferred alternative, the proposed project would involve the construction of a 14-foot trail with two, 7-foot pedestrian lanes and 2-foot shoulders, resulting in an 18-foot wide trail profile. The proposed project will include pedestrian bridge crossings at Mud Creek, Thorpe Creek, Thor Run, and Fall Creek.

Existing trails within the Duke Energy easement will be upgraded to comply with ADA standards. The total length of the project is approximately 4.83 miles. The proposed project will require the acquisition of additional right-of-way, as well the utilization of an existing Duke Power Easement. It is anticipated that approximately 2.50 acres of additional right-of-way will be needed; these acreages do not include those currently incorporated under the Duke Utility Easement.

The proposed action does not impact properties listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), on behalf of the FHWA, has issued a “No Historic Properties Affected” finding for the project due to the fact that no historic properties are present within the Area of Potential Effects (APE). In accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act, the views of the public are being sought regarding the effect of the proposed project on the historic elements as per 36 CFR 800.2(d), 800.3(e) and 800.6(a)(4). Pursuant to 36 CFR 800.4(d)(1), the documentation specified in 36 CFR 800. 11(d) is available for inspection in Lochmueller Group, Inc. offices. Additionally, this documentation can be viewed electronically by accessing INDOT’s Section 106 document posting website IN SCOPE at http://erms.indot.in.gov/Section106Documents. The Bid Bonds and certified checks of unsuccessful bidders will be returned by the Owner upon selection of the successful Bidder, execution of the Agreement, and provision of the required Performance and Payment Bonds.

Wage rates on the Project shall not be less than the prevailing wage scale as determined in accordance with Ind. Code §5-16-6 et seq. and include in the Project Manual, and the Contractor must conform to the antidiscrimination provisions of Ind. Code §5-16-6 et seq.

A Performance Bond with good and sufficient surety on the form provided in the Project Manual, shall be required of the successful Bidder in an amount equal to at least one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price, conditioned upon the faithful performance of the Agreement. The surety of the Performance Bond may not be released until one (1) year after the Owner’s final settlement with the Contractor.

The Contractor shall provide a Payment Bond to the Owner, approved by Owner and for the benefit of the Owner, in an amount equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price. The Payment Bond is binding on the Contractor, its subcontractors, and their successors and assigns for the payment of all indebtedness to a person for labor and services performed, material furnished, or services rendered. The Payment Bond must state that it is for the benefit of the subcontractors, laborers, material suppliers, and those performing services. The surety of the Payment Bond may not be released until one (1) year after the Owner’s final settlement with the Contractor.

The Ranch at West Clay is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced barn manager/ equine handler to care for 4 horses and other animals that may be added. The position available requires the barn manager to manage the facility, do minor barn and grounds repairs/maintenance, have a working knowledge of equine health care and first aid, be proficient in western riding and the training of safe trail horses, be able to rotate and seed pastures as needed, order hay feed and bedding, schedule the vet and farrier, and any other tasks that may arise at a small private horse barn.

Required Skills: The ability to carry out heavy physical labor in all weather conditions, basic handyman skills (fence fixing, changing light bulbs, etc.), strong understanding of equine management (feeding, turnout, grooming, bathing, blanketing, managing medications, first aid, etc.). MUST be proficient at riding and training western trail horses and know how to safely teach others to ride and work around horses.

HEAD LANDSCAPER

This position is responsible for the cultivation and care of the landscaping and grounds.

Worker will typically perform a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: sod laying, mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, sprinkler installation, pulling weeds, repairing and maintenance of buildings/ structures.

Key Responsibilities • Perform groundskeeping and building maintenance duties.

• Install rock, cement, lighting, water, and furniture.

• Water plants and grass as needed and apply fertilizer.

Experienced Caregiver/Companion for 96-year old lady in her home in Carmel, 106th/Shelborne Rd area. Three days a week approximately 8 hours per day / approximately 24 hours per week at $ 20 per hour. Days of week and hours are flexible.

Responsibilities in addition to companionship/safety, include help with activities of daily living including dressing, bathing, toileting, medication, hearing aids, occasional driving to appointments or take to lunch meals/ snacks and light housekeeping. ie make her bed or change it if accident, wash her laundry, put her dishes in dishwasher, etc The individual is currently mobile on her own and able to accomplish many activities herself, but is starting to experience some mild cognitive decline. Family also lives in the home are gone a fair amount.

The right individual will be a non-smoker, kind and caring, Trustworthy, the type of person who consistently shows up for work, able to lift up to 50 pounds, have great references and be able to pass a full background check.

Certifid Nurse Assistant a plus but not mandatory Would be wonderful if you are also available to do occasional Overnight sitting.
