HCCF celebrates philanthropy

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Hundreds of Hamilton County residents gathered Nov. 7 at Ritz Charles to honor three GIVING BACK community leaders and hear an update from the Hamilton County Community Foundation at the annual Celebration of Philanthropy.

HCCF presented Community Pillar Awards to Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, Shepherd’s Center of Hamilton County Executive Director Lauren Guynn and Dan Clark, Ivy Tech Community College Hamilton County campus president.

Each recipient selected a nonprofit to receive a $5,000 grant.

Fadness, who was honored for his work in addressing mental health issues, selected the Youth Mentoring Initiative to receive the grant funds.

For the last several years, Fadness has been working with other city departments and organizations to improve mental health resources and response in Fishers.

“I can honestly say with all the buildings we’ve built and all the exciting economic development announcements, there has been nothing as rewarding, challenging and humbling as the effort to give a voice to those who are living in quiet despair in our City of Fishers,” Fadness said.

Guynn directed her $5,000 grant to Hamilton County Area Neighborhood Development, which will partner with Shepherd’s Center to provide home maintenance and repairs for area seniors. She was recognized for her work empowering families.

“The aging population is quickly becoming the fastest-growing population in our community,” Guynn said. “We believe everyone in Hamilton County, regardless of their age, deserves a great-quality second half of life.”

Clark, honored for promoting inclusive economic growth, awarded his grant to Good Samaritan Network, which will partner with Ivy Tech on a workforce development project that includes education and training linked to a web-based directory.

“Higher education and workforce training are a maze. We’re going to untie the knots in the maze and make that information available as soon as those people need it,” Clark said.

After presenting the awards, HCCF President Tom Kilian announced a campaign to raise $1 million for the unrestricted endowment for Hamilton County by Dec. 31, 2020. If the goal is met, Lilly Endowment will match it 2-to-1, leading to an increase of $150,000 available each year for community grants.

Police K-9 killed in line of duty

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com A Fishers Police Dept. K-9 was killed in the line of duty shortly after midnight Nov. 13.

After an FPD officer attempted to stop a Cadillac traveling CRIME northbound on I-69, the driver refused to stop and a short pursuit ensued. It was terminated near 131st Street and Olio Road, where the male driver ran from the car. A female passenger, Rashaana L. Farrow, 19, Indianapolis, was taken into custody.

Officers then established a perimeter and began a manhunt for the male suspect. During the search, FPD K-9

officer Jarred Koopman observed the suspect, and when the suspect refused commands to stop, Koopman deployed his K-9, a 5-year-old Belgian malinois named Harlej. Following the deployment, officers heard a gunshot and the dog didn’t return.

Several hours later, the male suspect was taken into custody and identified as Richard D. Garrett, 19, of Indianapolis.

He was transported to an area hospital where he received medical treatment for a minor leg injury due to a dog bite.

Garrett and Farrow were transported to the Hamilton County Jail without incident.

Later, officers found Harlej in a wooded area. During his pursuit of the sus-

pect, Harlej was shot and killed. Harlej had served with FPD since 2015.

Since the community learned of Harlej’s death, FPD Public Information Officer Tom Weger said the department has received lots of support.

“We have received an outpouring of support, everything from comments on social media, voicemails, emails, monetary donations to the (Fishers Police) foundation, food, flowers, so we certainly appreciate all the support and we are going to need it in the coming days as we deal with this loss,” he said.

MVCSC to implement e-Learning for teacher rally

By Ann Marie Shambaugh and Anna Skinner AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Several school districts are expected to cancel classes EDUCATION Nov. 19 when teachers rally at the Indiana Statehouse, and Mt. Vernon Community School Corp. is one of them.

The Indiana State Teachers Association is organizing the Red for Ed Action Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 19 to ask legislators to use some of the state budget surplus to increase teacher salaries. It also will request that students and teachers aren’t negatively impacted for low I-LEARN scores in the program’s first year.

Thousands of teachers from across the state are expected to attend, which has locally led to the closure of several school districts and the implementation of e-Learning days in oth-

ers. MVCSC plans to hold an e-Learning day for grades K through 12. Supt.

Jack Parker released a letter stating more than 50 percent of MVCSC teachers planned to attend the rally.

“The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation School Board and the administrative team support their desire to add their voices to the thousands that will be at the state house on that day. We feel that with such a large number of teachers being absent, holding students in attendance is not tenable,” the letter read. “While we would have preferred to provide more notice, we understand the importance of supporting those educators who wish to attend this important event,” The nearby Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township canceled classes Nov. 19 and opted to make Feb. 14 an e-Learning day when staff reports to school.

PREVENT A DRAIN CLOG

Clogged drains might be one of the most inconvenient nuisances of homeownership, but did you know that drains are designed to be clog free?

Most drains clog because we try to put something in them that doesn’t belong.

Here are a few tips on how to prevent your homes drains from clogging up: 1. Don’t put anything in your toilet except for toilet paper – and yes, that does include wipes, even if they say they are flushable.

2. Even though toilet paper is flushable, don’t use too much toilet paper, or it will not be able to pass through the pipes cleanly.

3. If you have an older toilet or drainage system, keep in mind it may take extra water to move items through the line – that might require extra flushes.

6. Do not put peels down the drain, even if you have a garbage disposal installed.

7. Do not use chemical drain cleaners in your drains if a clog does occur. The chemicals can eat your home’s pipes, possibly leading to bigger issues later; they are not good for the environment; and over exposure to these chemicals can have adverse effects on your health.

If you have an older home, it is possible that your drain and sewer lines are made of material that has degraded over time. If you have continued drain problems, it is important to contact a professional to have your drain system inspected. Highlights of the agreement include a 3 percent base raise for all teachers, up to an additional $2,000 applied to the equalization of salary gaps between internal district teachers and those

hired externally, which may result in up to a 6.9 percent raise as a result and a 0.5 percent increase to the 401(a)-contribution match.

Beginning teacher salaries increase to $43,000 from $42,622, in addition to an increase to the extracurricular account fund of $85,000. There also isn’t an insurance premium increase for 2020.

The agreement equates to a district investment of approximately $2.3 million. This is MSDLT’s sixth consecutive year of providing raises to teachers.

Building a Brighter Future Humane Society for Hamilton County asks public for help reaching donation goal

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com The Humane Society for Hamilton County is targeting a March 2020 groundbreaking COVER STORY for its new facility, the culmination of a yearlong fundraising campaign called Building a Brighter Future. HSHC recently concluded a capital campaign targeting private donors to net 80 percent of the costs for the new building, and now it’s asking the public to help collect the remaining 20 percent.

HSHC Executive Director Rebecca Stevens, a Fishers resident, said the goal is for the Humane Society to move into the new facility at 106th Stevens Street and Hague Road in Fishers by the first quarter of 2021. HSHC is currently at 1721 Pleasant St., Noblesville.

The HSHC’s new building will be called the Steven J. Cage Foundation Animal Wellness Center. Cage, a Fishers entrepreneur, made Cage the largest donation during the organization’s capital campaign. The amount is confidential.

“The Humane Society for Hamilton County is an extraordinary group of people,” Cage said. “I’m honored to work with them to make this facility come to life. Animals bring out the best in us, and I’m sure Rebecca and her team will provide happiness and health to as many animals as possible.”

“I love how much (Cage) loves his cat,” Stevens said.

HSHC’s goals are to raise $12 million for construction and budget another $2 million for an operating endowment for a total of $14 million.

“We don’t currently have an endowment, so we are trying to raise money to build this and have that money in

place for our future,” Stevens said.

Although the new facility will have more kennels, Stevens said the new facility isn’t about just increasing space for adoptable pets.

“We are not only an adoption center. Yes, we re-home dogs and cats and save a lot of animal lives, but we are unique and different in the fact we believe animals pose the ability to hear the heart and mind, connecting

The increased space will house a medical room, a separate intake area for cats and space for educational outreach programs.

Once HSHC moves, Hamilton County will repurpose the Noblesville space, and the Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic next door will expand.

Sheridan deserves credit

“Your message is important to me … however … ” We all get them, these polite rebuffs. Our friend, business associate, or support desk operator is not available when we reach out. Understandable. Nature calls, travel happens and sometimes we just need a break. But the art of rejection is not as simple as some would believe it to be. And in the current torrent of communication mechanisms and chirping apps, we have greater reason to hide out than ever.

Studies report that humans are reaching an interchange apex. We send and receive scores of emails, texts, calls and posts each day.

Please pardon the reference, but it is now common to be listening to someone taking a phone call in the bathroom stall next door. Why? Is it really that imperative?

Could it be that we don’t know how to graciously take a breather?

Or, is it that those who demand our attention won’t tolerate even one?

So, we blithely post that “out-ofthe-office” form letter promising false love to whoever may reach out. Could we more honestly say, “You may be important to me. If so, I’m sad to miss you and will reach out promptly – but you may not be and you’ll soon know.”

It would be great to talk about it more, but it’s time for a break, and as the great Joe Walsh sings, “Just leave a message, maybe I’ll call.”

Running away from PF Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’ve finally accepted the fact that I have feet problems. There, I said it. My name is Danielle, and I HUMOR have planter fasciitis.

PF is an inflammation of the tissue that connects your toes to your heel and manifests in pain and soreness on the bottom of your foot. I’ve been a runner most of my life but have been relatively lucky in that I’ve avoided PF. Me being me, I usually attributed “other peoples,’” PF to “their own fault,” insinuating that I, of course, was better than them.

Not to their faces, mind you. I may be judgey, but I keep that shtick to myself.

Anyhoo, about a year ago I bought a weighted blanket and started training for Spartan obstacle course races, both of which put added strain on my feet. Yes, I am attributing part of my PF to my glorious 20-pound duvet that forces my feet into a pointed position for eight to 10 hours each

night. Combine that with lots of running and jumping on hard surfaces in less-than-supportive shoes and little to no stretching, and voila, PF! At least, that’s my “I’m-a-mom-so-I’mbasically-a-doctor” diagnosis.

But I haven’t done one thing to help my feet get better, even though I know exactly what to do. I still don’t stretch, I don’t wear a splint when I sleep, I don’t ice and I haven’t bought better shoes. I’ve basically been living in denial and limp-inducing pain for months.

A physical therapist called me out over the weekend, though, forcing me to admit that I have a problem. My name is Danielle, and I have PF. The road to recovery begins today!

Editor, Very interesting article (in the Oct. 8 issue of Current in Carmel) on police not “marking out” so that certain calls do not count. I did notice that the Town of Sheridan was not mentioned.

We lived in Sheridan for more than six years and noticed that the Sheridan Police Dept. and Sheridan Fire Dept. are often the first responding agencies for calls in that area of Hamilton County and a portion of Boone County. From U.S. 421 to U.S. 31 and down to Rt. 32 and up to the Tipton County line, Sheridan seems to always be the first to respond. It is a blessing to everyone in that area of the county and those who drive through that Sheridan has a full-time police and fire department, something rare for a town its size. The Town of Sheridan accomplishes much that benefits all residents in that northwest corner of Hamilton county (and a good chunk of Boone County), and wonder if they get the credit and compensation that they deserve.

Ongoing burst of energy Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I obsess about how my lawn compares to others on my block. I noticed some bare spots HUMOR this past summer, so I addressed the issue on a trip to a local nursery. Then at the Labor Day get-together, people were discussing Joe’s yard, which was suffering from the same problem. I thought, “There, but for the grace of sod, go I (that was a long way to travel for a joke, I know).”

Now, I have a new challenge to obsess over. It began with a letter from my electric company. The envelope looked like it contained my monthly utility bill, but the contents were far more ominous. The page was titled, “Last Three Months – Neighbor Comparison.”

I scanned the enclosed printout only to learn that I was consuming more energy than those identified by the electric company as, “Your Most Efficient Neighbors.” I felt so exposed that I closed the curtains and turned off the 11 lights, three TVs and two computers I had left on the night before.

The electric company claims I used 40 percent more electricity than my most efficient neighbor. Who was this person? Which house did he live in? It didn’t say. Was he hiding in the shadows? I’ll never know, because there are no shadows when there are never any lights on.

I asked my neighbor Ted if he received a similar letter. Ted is a nice

guy, but he always leaves his garage door open, which is an eyesore. I thought he was just forgetful, but apparently this is part of his grand plan to be recognized as a “conservation superstar.”

“Every kilowatt counts,” Ted told me while we were standing in his driveway. “If I never close that overhead door, I can save $1.49 a year.” He asked what I was doing to conserve resources at home. I was tired of the discussion, so I told him I only shower once a month. Ted walked back into the garage … and down came the door.

The idea that someone is monitoring what goes on in and around my home is creepy. Whenever I look outside, strange people are reading my meters, putting colored lines on my neighbors’ lawns, installing invisible fences and looking through tiny telescopes mounted on yellow tripods.

Despite this, I really am going to try to do my part in this conservation initiative. I’m going to charge my iPad in the car, disconnect my clock radio when I’m not home and make toast only when absolutely necessary. The competition is rigorous to be No. 1 in the neighborhood, but I’m not worried. I don’t plan on expending much energy.

Mud Creek Players to perform show as tribute to the late Eberharter

Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” adapted by Tom Haas, returns to the Indiana Repertory Theatre this holiday season. The traditional holiday show, which began Nov. 16 and runs through Dec. 26, will feature additional carols and new costumes for the first time in more than 20 years.

The Victorian London costumes have been reimagined, redesigned and rebuilt by costume designer Linda Pisano and the IRT Costume Shop.

Returning for his 10th year as Ebenezer Scrooge is Ryan Artzberger.

He will be joined by returning cast members Ashley Dillard, Jennifer Johansen, Rob Johansen, Aaron Kirby, Stephenie Soohyun Park and Milicent Wright, along with “A Christmas Carol” newcomers Elyakeem Avraham, Jesse Bhamrah, Ivy Moody, Emma Rosenthal and Scott Van Wye.

The play is about a group of people in a small trailer park who are trying to incorporate into a town called Doublewide. The people in the bigger town don’t want to share county funds to have them.

“The silliness of the show is they are trying to win the countywide battle of the mangers competition,” Moore said. “They also found a yam that looks like Lady Bird Johnson, so they are creating a festival around seeing the Lady Bird Johnson yam.”

Conkin, a Noblesville resident, was in the previous four Mud Creek shows by the writing team of Jones, Hope and Wooten.

“They are crazy, silly comedies,” Conkin said. “It’s like Carol Burnett did on her old show, there are all these crazy characters.”

“A Doublewide, Texas Christmas” was supposed to be directed by Linda Eberharter.

“She directed many shows, including every show Eberharter we’ve ever done by this writing team,” Moore said.

“She got lung cancer, and I told her I would assist her so she had a backup if things got rough. Unfortunately, the disease advanced rapidly and she passed away in October.”

“A Doublewide, Texas Christmas” has eight performances Nov. 22 to Dec. 14 at Mud Creek Theater, 9740 E. 86th St., Indianapolis. The preview night performance is Nov. 21, where attendees can pay what they want in cash ($1 or more).

“Several of her former cast members are in this, so it’s a labor of love we are doing this,” Moore said.

To memorialize Eberharter, they will not tear the set down when the show closes Dec. 14. Eberharter’s family, Mud Creek Players and Indiana Renaissance Fair plan to do a Celebration of Life on the set at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 21. Eberharter was the Renaissance Fair Queen Elizabeth for a number of years.

Eberharter, who was Mud Creek Players’ president when she died, directed the first play from the writing team of Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten at Mud Creek several years ago.

“At church, I lead vacation Bible school, so I do fun skits to get them engaged before they go into Sunday school,” Skinner said. “I just felt a passion when I was doing it this summer. I thought if I’m getting this much joy out of it, I shouldn’t have to wait until the summer to do it.”

Get in the next-to-last word Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt If a potato can become vodka, then you can become a bonafide word nerd. The tools GRAMMAR GUY and tips I give you are meant to be used for good. Please don’t gloat your grammar greatness over anyone; rather, use it to lift everyone up. I’m about to share a word with you that will make everyone at the white tie-optional gala assume you’re the king or queen of some distant, exotic land. Use this word, and upper-crusters will begin consulting with you before they order their newest monocle.

I’m talking about the word “penultimate.” Although this sounds like a million-dollar word, it simply means “next-to-last” or “second-to-last.” So, if you ate the “penultimate Oreo,” that would mean you ate the next-to-last Oreo in the package. If you are reading the 19th chapter in a 20-chapter book, you are reading the book’s penultimate chapter. If you use the penultimate square of toilet paper, it’s time to install a new roll so the next person isn’t stuck with one lonely square.

Allow me to put on my horn-rimmed

grammar nerd glasses for a second.

The term “penult” is a noun that means the next-to-last syllable in a word. The penult in the word “automobile” is “mo.” Now you know that!

Certainly, I’m not going to up the ante and share an even nerdier-yet-related word, am I? Yes, I am: antepenultimate. Antepenultimate refers to the third-to-last item in a series, or the next-to-nextto-last thing. Going back to our 20-chapter book: If Chapter 19 is the penultimate chapter, that means Chapter 18 is the antepenultimate chapter. If we break down the Latin meanings for each part of the word, we’d get “before” (ante) “almost” (pen) and “last” (ultimate). Antepenultimate is the thing that comes before the almost last thing.

Yes, my friends, if the humble potato can become vodka, then you, too, can achieve the high status of grammar guru. I believe in you. It’s time to go out there and dominate the English language.
