Spartz said there are government platforms for constituents to address concerns, but she wants to consolidate them into an easier process that is more inclusive and streamlined.

“We want to assess the efficiency of this process,” she said. “I would like to do procedures differently and see how we can look at what we have and can we actually consolidate all of these hotlines into something more? We have several processes to send complaints, like the State Board of Accounts, the inspector general or specific hotlines for Medicaid fraud or some other issues. There’s a lot of different ways. I feel we can have a more streamlined way just to make it more clear or easy if someone has a reason to do that. It will allow more legal protection for any person and can address all concerns.”

FFD Station 395 purchases new fire engine

By Michael Rheinheimer news@currentinfishers.com Fishers Fire Dept. Station 395 of has a new engine. The 2019 Pierce Saber will replace a 2005 modEQUIPMENT el. FFD Capt. John Mehling said the old engine will be placed in reserve status.

Mehling said much of the fire fleet in Fishers is made up of Pierce engines.

Having a uniform fleet can shave off life-saving seconds in an emergency, he said.

“We’ve chosen Pierce for the quality of the truck,” Mehling said. “We’re able to get our equipment (quickly). All the equipment is in the same place. As personnel float from station to station, the crews know exactly where the equipment’s at. Everything we do is based around seconds. The more seconds we can save becomes more minutes.

Engine 395 was ushered into service with a ceremonial first wash and a “push” into the station. Mehling said the ceremony dates back to the beginning of organized fire service and has a deep meaning for the fire crew.

The new engine can carry 750 gallons of water and can pump 1,500 gallons per minute when attached to a water source.

In addition to being placed in reserve status, the old engine will be used on public education details.

Lead youth by leading ourselves Commentary by Randy Wheeler Recently, as a part of The John Maxwell Team October Global Youth Initiative, I was able to share with youth about the foundation to COLUMN successful leadership: leading ourselves.

How we see ourselves and what we think about ourselves impacts how well we can lead. In spending years among teenagers, I have sometimes not led them well because they have a knack for pushing my buttons. The following principles have helped me when I do lead them well.

• Love them unconditionally: I know this may sound trite, but it’s true. Too often, I have had to apologize for sarcastic comments or for being harsh.

Occasionally, I get it right and help a young man or woman see they are valuable because of who they are and not what they do.

• Patience: If you are a parent, then you know this is a challenge. If you have worked with any human being, it can be a challenge. Too often, I forget that youth are not little adults. They are at a different stage of life, and I need to slow down, connect, teach, re-teach and give them time to learn and grow.

• Inspire: Too often, we get caught up in our agendas and forget people are looking at our example. As we keep this reality in our awareness, it can help us be intentional about leading in a way we would want to be led. Help them see where they can go and encourage them along the path.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION Ind. 37 utility relocation ongoing, major projects to begin in spring 2020

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Although utility relocation, drainage and detour COVER STORY construction is ongoing, major Ind. 37 construction won’t begin until spring 2020. City of Fishers Director of Engineering Jason Taylor said drivers won’t see significant work being done during the winter months.

“We’ve recently awarded (bids for) the 126th (Street) interchange,” Taylor said. “We had a groundbreaking event there. Most of the work people are seeing today is prep work for maintenance of traffic for next year. The majority of the work done this year is a temporary widening of State Road 37 to allow for four lanes to continue through (during construction).”

Construction is under way on 131st Street to widen it to two lanes each direction to manage traffic detours.

There also are active drainage line projects for the southern and northern drainage lines.

“The purpose of these two drainage lines being constructed is because we are depressing State Road 37 and taking it under the cross streets similar to Keystone (Park-

way),” Taylor said.

TAKING DETOURS Taylor said drivers won’t need to worry about detours until spring 2020.

“We won’t encourage anyone to change their routes until they have to, whenever we start constructing,” Taylor said. “We will be shifting traffic onto the east side of 37 so we can construct the west side, and in order to do that, we have to close down access from 126th to the west to 37. So, that traffic will be detoured elsewhere and signed appropriately by utilizing Allisonville and 131st.”

The closure will occur in the spring. Drivers will be unable to access Ind. 37 from 126th Street if coming from the west as the first half of the roundabout interchange is constructed. A similar closure/ construction will occur on the east side when the west side opens. The 126th Street and Ind. 37 interchange is expected to be open by the end of the 2020 construction season.

Construction on the 146th Street interchange will begin in the spring as well.

“146th Street is going to be a two-year construction schedule because of the amount of traffic on 146th,” Taylor said. “We set that

maintenance of traffic up to allow for east-west traffic to still flow for the whole duration.”

DIFFERENT INTERCHANGES 146th Street will be a single-point interchange similar to Allisonville Road and I-465, whereas 126th, 131st and 141st streets will be roundabout interchanges similar to Keystone Parkway. 135th Street will be a rightin, right-out intersection, meaning drivers heading southbound on Ind. 37 trying to access westbound 135th Street will have to travel to 131st Street, use the roundabout interchange and go north to make the

turn.

“The traffic generated there is lower but also there needs to be separation between the interchanges. We need to have space for an on-ramp and off-ramp, and with interchanges at 126th and 131st, those were extremely tight,” Taylor said.

If all goes as planned, the 126th Street interchange will open by the end of 2020; the 131st, 135th and 146th street interchanges will be open by the end of 2021; and the 141st Street interchange will open by the end of 2022.

PROJECT COST AND NOBLESVILLE’S INVOLVEMENT For the Fishers portion of the project, improving Ind. 37 from 126th Street to 146th Street, the City of Fishers contributed $12 million, Hamilton County contributed $12 million and the Indiana Dept. of Transportation contributed $100 million. The Noblesville portion of the project, continuing the improvements north to Ind. 32/38, hasn’t been finalized, but when it is, Fishers will contribute an additional $4 million, the county will contribute an additional $4 million

and Noblesville will contribute $16 million to make contributions equal. INDOT hasn’t announced funding for the Noblesville phase.

In addition, the City of Fishers and Hamilton County each contributed $250,000 for marketing efforts to aid businesses during construction. Some businesses are offering special discounts during construction. For business news and detour information, visit 37thrives.com.

The Convention of States Project

Commentary by Terry Anker Do you want the good news or the bad? Conventional wisdom teaches us to get the bad out of the way first. Let’s confront the broccoli before we enjoy the dessert.

It probably is not a bad idea. If we frame our thinking in terms of the most difficult at the outset, we are better equipped to handle tough challenges when fresh and enjoy the upside after the battle.

This approach to life is time-tested to provide superior long-term results, yet much of modern life seems to be predicated on anything but the “long-term.” Companies squeeze reinvestment in favor of executive bonuses. Governments provide generous benefits instantly while knowingly off-laying the responsibility to pay for those programs on future generations. And nonprofits are lauded for meeting today’s needs, not tomorrow’s. Executives and officials are measured on a quarterly (or daily) basis. If we don’t produce right now, there may be no later.

Have we developed a culture of urgency at the expense of one that values planning and investment?

We prefer immediate returns and satisfaction while shunning the accounting for it all. Can we build a house without a solid foundation?

Can we have a stable forest of only fast-growing trees? Can we put the cart before the horse?

A bias for action is good, and we often eat too much at dinner to fully enjoy dessert. Still, can’t we find a healthy balance?

IDs and Jell-O shots Commentary by Danielle Wilson Our oldest turned 21 a few weeks ago. Can you believe it? I know! Based on my photo, you probaHUMOR bly put me at, what, 32?

Maybe 33? Alas, I’m much closer to 50 than my still all-natural hair color might suggest. And though I thought I would feel old celebrating with the birthday boy down in Bloomington, or at the very least uncomfortable as I watched him legally throwback Jell-O shots, my concerns were entirely unfounded.

I quite enjoyed seeing him as an adult and not feeling the need to “mother him.” His life, his choices. Did I internally debate cleaning his apartment, getting him a jacket, or telling him to eat something to absorb the alcohol? Of course! Once a mommy, always a mommy. But I was able to suppress every maternal instinct I had and marvel at the decent job we did in parenting him. As an added bonus, I was carded not once, but twice,

even as my husband, Doo, was waved through. I still have it, folks!

And in some respects, so does Doo. He summoned his college-boy spirit and dove headfirst into the fray, matching his young apprentices drink for drink and crashing on an “if-thisthing-could-talk” couch overnight. At least, I think, that’s what happened.

Per my usual, I bailed on the bar scene fairly early, once an intense game of “Sink the Biz” started and a doable plan to get Doo back to Indy was proposed. He has yet to return, by the way. But what could possibly go wrong?

So, I guess I’m good with having older kids. And apparently, abandoning Doo at IU. Peace out.

Contemporary Christian songwriter Thurlow was born to sing

By Mark Ambrogi mark@yoaurecurrent.com Andrea Thurlow’s love of singing is inherited as both her parents were performers.

MUSIC The Fishers resident’s father is John Henderson, and her mother is Janette Trent.

“My mom doesn’t perform regularly anymore, but my dad is the worship leader at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church Thurlow in Terre Haute,” Thurlow said. “My dad has released two contemporary Christian albums over the last two years and performs regularly in the Terre Haute area. He released an album in 2017 called ‘Jesus Still Loves You.’ I wrote and sang three of the songs on that album.”

Thurlow’s first album, “Too Good,” was scheduled to be released Nov. 8. The album, whose title is derived from the meaning God is “Too Good,” was produced by Last Day Productions. The 2011 Westfield High School graduate recorded three songs for the album in April. In May, she launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a full 11-song album.

“The goal of the Kickstarter was to raise $5,000 for the album in 30 days,” she said. “The campaign was successfully funded in 29 days, ultimately raising just under $5,500.

Since then, we have been working on getting the album ready as well as the other Kickstarter rewards, including a printed lyric book and personalized one-minute jingles for every donor who gave $100 or more.”

Thurlow began writing her first songs at age 22.

She said her personal favorites on the album are the title track “Too Good,” “Let Them Hear” and “Right at Home.”

None are particularly cost-effective, but hey, you’re worth it. All can be found at Tasteful Times on Olio Road.

Domaine Weinbach Gewurtztraminer, about $25, sounds German, but actually comes from the Alsace region of France. A very pretty white wine, it smells like spiced-fragrant tea (think Constant Comment) and roses. I’d say the wine is off-dry but has a bit of gingery heat to brighten it up. It is a great middle-of-theroad option for the white zin and chardonnay drinkers in your life.

Drouhin Gevery-Chambertin (hails from a Grand Cru vineyard in France) is a pinot noir. A lovely choice with turkey and cranberries because of it

fruitiness, it also possesses some of my favorite flavors in wine: nutmeg, leather and mushrooms. A complex wine with subtle tannins, it’s velvet in the mouth. Around $60ish and worth it.

Finally, this guilty pleasure: Dolce

by Nickel & Nickel. Full disclosure: If I go to dinner and this wine is offered, I always buy a glass for dessert. Always. It’s an expensive treat. This is a sweet dessert wine from Napa Valley, in the style of Sauternes. It is at once, filled with oranges, pears, apricots, vanilla and caramel. Maybe a little butterscotch?

It is billed as “Liquid Gold” and is served chilled. In small amounts. The longer you keep it, the richer it becomes. A 350ml bottle, $90ish.

Shore Temple of India Commentary by Don Knebel The Shore Temple is one of the most visited sites in southern India.

It may once have been TRAVEL a part of a much larger religious complex, now lost to the sea.

In the first millennium A.D., Mamallapuram, about 40 miles south of the modern city of Chennai (once known as Madras), was one of two important ports along the Bay of Bengal. Beginning in the seventh century, the powerful and creative Pallava Dynasty, which conducted trade and diplomatic missions from Mamallapuram, began constructing a series of imposing religious structures near the port, the most famous being the Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots), carved from a single outcropping of granite. To the east of the Pancha Rathas, almost at water’s edge, is the so-called “Shore Temple,” built between 700 and 728 A.D. The Shore Temple is actually three temples erected on a single platform.

All three are in the shape of a pyramid, erected from blocks of granite, making them among the oldest such structures in southern India. Two of

the temples honor Shiva, considered the supreme god by many Hindus. A smaller temple is devoted to Vishnu, another important Hindu deity. In the five-story main Shiva temple, which opens to the rising sun, the deity is represented by the Shiva Lingam, a glistening phallic-like stone representing fertility.

When Marco Polo visited the coast of the Bay of Bengal in 1292, he reported seeing what he described as “Seven Pagodas.” The Shore Temple was probably at least one (or perhaps three) of those pagodas. The devastating tsunami in December 2004 temporarily uncovered another temple constructed from granite blocks just offshore, leading to speculation that the rest of the seven pagodas are now under the Bay of Bengal. The area including the Pancha Rathas and the Shore Temple is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
