Boating safety event set for May 19

As Geist Reservoir users begin to enjoy the water, the Fishers Police EDUCATION Dept. and America’s Boating Club of Central Indiana are educating boaters on some of the lesserknown watercraft dangers.

From noon to 3 p.m. May 19, America’s Boating Club of Central Indiana representatives will be at the Geist Marina, 11695 Fall Creek Rd., to present boating-related information, demonstrations and activities. The event is in conjunction with National Safe Boating Week (May 18-24).

“Last year, there was something like over 800 boating deaths in the United States,” said Jason Settles, communications officer for America’s Boating Club of Central Indiana.

“Most of these things are attributed to operator error, just not knowing something or not having the proper training. (Operators) are kind of like, ‘It’s a boat, I can drive this,’ but actually, you can’t. To drive a car and fly a plane, you have to have a license. To drive a boat, you don’t (need a license) as long as you are 16 and have a drivers’ license.”

Boating skills training and free vessel checks will be offered at the event.

“The big thing we are going to have is we are going to have a virtual-boat training computer and basically, it’s three monitors set up, and it gives the visual view of this lake and you can set it to practice things, anything from docking to departing the dock to maneuvering in channels and currents and just a variety of things,” Settles said. “People can actually test their skills without being in any danger.”

Settles said a hidden danger most boaters aren’t aware of is carbon monoxide poisoning.

“Carbon monoxide poisoning is a big problem on boats,” Settles said. “Most people don’t even have a detector in their homes. We had an experienced boater friend of ours on Lake Michigan that died because he didn’t know (about carbon monoxide) and was inside sleeping on his boat.”

America’s Boating Club of Central Indiana Commander Mike Crowell said even smaller boats without a cabin can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

“Even with small boats on Geist, the ones with the ski platform on the back of the boat, the exhaust is oftentimes underneath that platform,” Crowell said. “If one gets a lung-full of the full-strength stuff, you’re in trouble.”

To prevent such issues, Crowell suggests not putting the boat in neutral when picking up passengers from the water. He recommends turning the engine off.

ln another effort to promote safety, the Fishers Police Dept. has approximately 30 officers who can operate the department’s public safety boat, which boat patrols the reservoir.

FPD officer Mike Janes said the most common issues are wake-zone violations and intoxicated boaters. However, Janes has seen fewer intoxicated boaters in recent years on Geist Reservoir.

“Violating idle zones and reckless operation, those things lead to signs of someone

impaired,” Janes said. “A lot of times, we encounter people unrelated to (drinking) but then see the signs of intoxication.”

Janes said FPD patrols the water each weekend at different times. The Dept. of Natural Resources polices the lake more so during the week.

The FPD operates a 27-foot Boston Whaler that it shares with the Fishers Fire Dept. The boat is equipped with a pump that sprays lake water onto a fire.

WHEN AN EMERGENCY HAPPENS ON THE LAKE FPD officer Mike Janes said when a homeowner calls police from their home, it’s easy for authorities to navigate the boat to the issue because they have the house address. However, if a boater is in distress on the water and they are unsure of their location, it’s more difficult for first responders to find them.

“If someone calls in and they don’t know where they are, give us landmarks nearby or give us the GPS coordinates off your phone,” Janes said. “But if they know they’re near the Olio Road boat ramp, the sailing club, the dam, or the islands south by the dam, all those things help us locate them quickly.”

A group of students from Brooks School Elementary and Fall Creek InterEVENT mediate will participate in the Destination Imagination Global Finals May 22-25 in Kansas City, Mo. DI is a nonprofit that promotes hands-on learning through challenges that test kids’ creativity, problem-solving and project-management skills.

The team Smooth Like a Waffle was formed three years ago. Members are Maya Hayes, Mia Henderson, Diya Parikh, Cameron Henderson, Max Weinberger and Emma Hayes. In February and March, the team participated in the Destination Imagination regional and state tournaments in the Fine Arts Challenge: Get Your Game On. “The kids had to research a game, explain the development of it and also create a game gizmo,” team manager Jill Henderson said.

“They chose the whack-a-mole game. Our gizmo is levers that push the moles up from behind.”

“The first year they made a joke in their skit and about how clumsy or awkward someone was, and one of the kids said the person was smooth like a waffle,” Henderson said. “They all just thought it was hilarious and it stuck.”

Todd Zimmerman, founder and president of Fishers Falcons, wanted to create an organization with three basic tenets.

“I want to create a sense where the kids learn about community and giving back,” said Zimmerman, a Fishers City Council member. “So, one of the things we push for them is give back with service projects.

The second thing is mentoring. I see a lot of boys in youth sports quit around the age of fifth grade because of a bad experience with a coach or parents, or they feel they just don’t have confidence in themselves anymore to play the game.”

There are three age bracket teams, 13U, 10U and 7U, playing in their debut season.

Zimmerman said it’s not mandatory for all players but the idea is to have a 13-yearold mentor and a 10-year-old, and a 10-yearold mentor and a 7-year-old.

“They meet up with one of the parents and have an ice cream, get to know each

other and talk about what they like about the sport and have an older mentor there to encourage the younger kid to keep trying and to never give up,” he said.

Zimmerman said he plans to counsel older players that, as role models, they have to live up to a higher expectation and conduct themselves the right way on and off the field.

The third part is teaching about the love of the game and team concept.

Zimmerman is coaching the 13U team, which includes his son, Eli. His son Benji is on the 10U team.

ATTRACTING NATIONAL ACTS Nickel Plate District Amphitheater brings in two national, ticketed acts

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com After unveiling the renovated Nickel Plate District Amphitheater COVER STORY last summer, the City of Fishers learned some valuable lessons it plans to implement this year for marquee events.

Last year, the city experimented with charging admission when national musicians performed. Paid tickets were required for Manchester Orchestra and Houndmouth.

“It was kind of the entry point to offering shows that aren’t just free,” Parks and Recreation Director Sarah Sandquist said.

“Admittedly, we had a couple challenges with the first show, which was rooted back to lack of signage. We have addressed the lack of enough bathrooms. It was really just a signage issue.”

The amphitheater has seven new restrooms in the pavilion building and renovated restrooms near the amphitheater along with portable restrooms.

“All of our concerts this year will have wayfinding and signage at the venue to help people orient themselves and direct

where they need to go,” Sandquist said.

Another issue last year was long lines for alcohol and food vendors.

“We have selected some new vendors for those ticketed shows, specifically,” Sandquist said.

Four Day Ray Brewing will be this year’s beer and wine vendor.

Ticketed events, which have not yet been announced, will be offered again this year.

Admission is $9.23, the same as last year’s price.

Mayor Scott Fadness said it costs more to attract national performers but added that the effort is “basically cost-neutral.”

Costs are covered by ticket sales and sponsorships.

“Sarah and her team do a good job of garnering sponsorships, and between sponsorships and the ticket fee, the city taxpayers are paying little to nothing,” Fadness said.

“We almost break even on ticketing shows,” Sandquist added. “The artist itself costs a little bit more, but with the small amount of revenue generated (from tickets), the (event) is covered additionally with sponsorships.”

Unlike last year, road closures will not

take place and parking should be more convenient.

“We are excited this year there won’t be any road closures with the concerts or events at the Amp. There was last year.

We also have new parking available in the police department garage,” Sandquist said.

“We will have assistance from Rotary on

Tuesday nights to help people on where to park. There’s lots of parking around, and in free, covered garages.”

Sandquist estimates there are approximately 1,000 parking spots near the amphitheater. She estimates approximately 3,500 people attend the concerts.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOISE COMPLAINTS

SPARK!FISHERS CONCERT ANNOUNCED

With the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater concerts held in the heart of downtown Fishers, some residents aren’t fans of the noise.

“Occasionally, the apartment folks complain,” Mayor Scott Fadness said.

“We try to be cognizant of that. Our concerts don’t go exceptionally late by any means, and part of that is you are living in an urban environment where lots of activities are.”

Most nights, the concerts wrap up by 10 p.m., but Sandquist said ticketed shows may run a little longer. This year, the Friday night concerts will begin at 8 p.m. in an effort to end earlier than previous years.

Although admission is charged for most national acts in Fishers, the fee will be waived this summer for shows by Vertical Horizon and Tonic.

Vertical Horizon and Tonic will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. June 28 to kick off the twoday Spark!Fishers Fourth of July celebration.

Although the event is free, tickets are required for entry. The city will hand out 6,000 tickets at various locations prior to the event, including the farmers market. Last year, every ticket for the Fourth of July show was claimed.

LETTER The big picture Editor, So, we are going to eliminate 9.2 miles of railroad tracks that connect three major metro areas of central Indiana and beyond.

These tracks are worth untold millions of dollars and should be left on deposit for the future transportation needs of everyone. Sacrificing this asset for an exercise trail that not everyone can or will use is not prudent planning. Rather, it is akin to political grandstanding.

This trail project was a perfect opportunity to show responsible planning by constructing the exercise trail alongside of the tracks. It also would have preserved the basis for naming several features of Fishers after the railroad! You know, “Nickel Plate District,” “Fishers Station,” “Nickel Plate Railroad,” “The Switch,” The Depot,” “The Yard,” etc., etc. Oh, never mind.

Commentary by Terry Anker From 1791 until 1992, the United States Congress officially recognized a handful of organizations to profit from the official imprimatur of our federal authorities as being legitimate and sanctioned. While the central government does not oversee operations directly, the granting of a congressional charter serves to distinguish these few from the other reported 1,500,000 registered nonprofits operating in our nation.

The list is populated with all-familiar names, including the National Park Foundation, Federal Reserve Bank, National Academy of the Sciences, American Red Cross and youth-serving organizations like Girl Scouts, FFA and Boy Scouts. While the designation is considered largely honorific, each remains endorsed by our national legislative body as unique, in the public interest and supporting appropriate and beneficial activities.

For many generations, these institutions had withstood the test of time and proven themselves worthy of broad support. But today these organizations are fighting on a new front. Schools and other government units have, in many cases, reduced these to the lowest common denominator. Scouts compete with every other group that demands attention from school children because the administrators fear those imagining grievance will initiate litigation if equal access is withheld.

The harm of this misguided egalitarian impulse is born entirely by our children. Some schools have restricted or eliminated access at the precise time when the youngsters need the support. And all at no cost to the taxpayer. Do congressional charters matter? For our kids, they should.

Bracing for a home invasion Commentary by Danielle Wilson It’s May, people, and you know what that means. No, not the race. I’m talking about the life-altering phenomenon that occurs when college kids return HUMOR home. My wonderfully quiet house and relatively full fridge are about to take a beating.

We’ve actually already had “the talk.” You know, the one that makes parents sound like Old Man Get-Off-My-Lawn Wilson. “So long as you are under my roof … blah, blah, blah.” Curfews, chores, driveway spot — basic family responsibilities and expectations.

But even assuming he abides by all of the rules, his mere presence, while enjoyable in small doses, changes the dynamics of our humble abode.

For starters, our younger three kids have adapted to his absence and delight in not having an A-type firstborn steamroll over their ideas and opinions. There is one less sibling in competition for our affection, and

one less human hogging precious bathroom time. One less of everything, really, and when that loud-talking, personal spacechallenged, bratty older brother gets back, one less quickly becomes one more.

Particularly in the “One More Mouth to Feed” category. While hitting Meijer in anticipation of the ensuing food shortage, I saw several other moms filling carts with Pop Tarts, Cheeze-Its and various other “luxury goods” that our coeds cannot afford. It’s like a plague of locusts has arrived for the summer and no kitchen is safe from its destructive gastronomical path.

How will we survive this temporary home invasion? I’m not sure. And it’s only May. Stupid May. Peace out.

HOA questions Fishers City Council

Editor, I just want to share that I read every edition of Current in Fishers. I especially appreciate Don Knebel’s travel articles because they give us so much historical and other context about interesting places around the world.

But thank you, too, for the Grammar Guy’s column. Mr. Honeycutt reminds us of the importance of words and using them well.

Your articles educate and inspire me. In fact, after reading the (April 9) edition, I think I’ll plan to attend the next Real Talk hosted by Ace. I hear and see our city coming together.

Current in Fishers is a vital part of that progress.

Editor, It was recently announced, with fanfare, that the Fishers City Council approved a 10-year, 100 percent property tax abatement and an impact fee waiver for Crew Carwash. I don’t understand why they would approve this and what is the benefit for our residents? This is the question our HOA members are asking.

Fishers is a very desirable location for businesses. Crew should want to be here for the right reasons, not for the biggest corporate welfare check. After its building is up, the rest of us will be forced to deal with new referendums for roads, schools and public services that are trying to keep up with the development. Businesses want to be located in Fishers. Why are you not asking them to pay their fair share?

Trail-train a win-win

Editor, Recently, I attended a public meeting about the trains and trails issue facing Fishers and other communities. There were people there from various communities but most were from Fishers. The Fishers City Council has given the public impression that we could only have a trail. I am a trail guy and walk or bike along many trails in Fishers and neighboring communities. There is a need for more trails. But I am also a train guy who loved to take the grandchildren to the fair on the train. A lot of grandparents and parents probably liked that, too, and were sad when that ended. I am sure there are many folks who would love to go down to Indy to events but, like me, know parking is a nightmare.

The city council and mayor must realize that traffic during rush hour continues to get worse. Ten years from now we will have gridlock to match much bigger cities. They must realize that we can’t build new lanes or giant roundabouts fast enough to keep up with the population growth in the north and east. The city wants only a trail because of economic development. The presentation by a city planning/engineering group pointed out that a combination trail-train will bring even more economic development. A trail-train combo is a win-win. The important thing is to set aside space along the trail for future rapid-transit light rail.

Thank you, Danielle Wilson Editor, I want to write about someone I adore and admire. I don’t know her, but I feel like I do. Every Tuesday, when I open Current to her page, I see those twinkling eyes and big smile. Danielle Wilson.

I moved to Fishers several years ago and, at some point, started receiving Current.

None of us are exempt from pain and sorrow. If we live long enough, we face health issues, sometimes financial difficulty and we lose the people we love. My sister had just passed from ovarian cancer, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, a grandchild was dealing with drug issues and my elderly parents were in the hospital at the same time. I opened my first issue of Current and when I read Danielle’s commentary, I laughed out loud. I know I hadn’t laughed for a long time, and it was a hearty laugh. A breath of fresh air, and God knows I needed it. Fast-forward several years later, and I still go straight to her articles. My little 93-year-old mother loves her, too! We love her chutzpah, her gutsiness and her edge.

I wish she had been my teacher instead of the serious and stodgy ones I had.

A tall tale Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I went to my doctor after an episode of lightheadedness. During an MRI, I had a flashback to high school trigoHUMOR nometry class where I also stared at a blank ceiling, listening to strange, indecipherable sounds.

At the hospital they give you a buzzer to press if the experience becomes unbearable, a courtesy never extended by my freshman math teacher.

After they examined my brain scan, a nurse called to report they didn’t find anything. Obviously, this was good news, but did the test results have to be phrased quite that way?

On my license, my passport and all medical questionnaires, I always listed myself as 5-foot-10 — not as tall as my dad (a strapping 6-footer) but taller than my mom, a petite 5-3. I knew I was 5-9 1/2, but I always rounded it up. I mean, who was I hurting?

In the follow-up appointment, the nurse measured my vitals.

“Blood pressure 123 over 80, height 5-8, weight 165. Now, please step over here and …”

“Whoa! How tall did you say I was?”

“That would be 5 feet, 8 inches — in your socks, which adds a little.”

“Look, first of all, I’m 5-10, maybe 5-9 1/2, and second, these are nylon dress socks, and very thin.”

“Whatever you say, Mr. Wolfsie. Please grab one of the blue robes off that hook on the door ... if you can reach it.”

When I got home, I asked my wife how tall she thought I was.

“Well, I’m 5-7, so I’d say you are 5-8. And you’re still as adorable as can be.”

“But when we got married, I told you I was 5-10.

“I figured you rounded it up from 5-7.”

That’s the end of the story. No illness, but I’m either a pathological liar (misrepresenting my height for 50 years) and need some psychological counseling — or I am (and this is tough to admit) shrinking.

I haven’t decided which one it is. I guess it’s going to depend on which one is covered by my medical insurance.

Performing arts center announces schedule

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Chances are you are going to find something that appeals to you about the Center for the Performing EVENTS Arts’ 2019-20 season at the Palladium.

From Johnny Mathis to Gladys Knight to Steve Martin and Martin Short to Lyle Lovett to the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, the schedule covers many different genres.

Great American Songbook Hall of Famer Mathis, known for his songs such as “Chances Are” and “Misty,” will be a romantic treat for fans on Halloween night. He last appeared at the Palladium in June 2013.

Martin and Short are a comedy treat early in the season with a Sept. 26 performance.

“I was a board member before I became president. I think I can honestly say this is our best season yet,” Center for the Performing Arts CEO/President Jeff McDermott said. “There is as much, if not more, name recognition from (previous seasons). We have some of the well-known artist as well as vision artists that we brought in. Some of our jazz and classical performers people might not know as well, but I think they are going to be wowed. I’m just excited by the balance of the whole season.

“The ones we are really considering the headliners are Steve Martin and Martin Short. It’s the first show after our gala, which really kicks off our season, but obviously there are several that are headline-quality artists.”

The Center’s Annual Gala and Songbook Celebration, set for Sept. 21, will feature a performance by 2016 Songbook Hall of Fame inductee Dionne Warwick.

Paul Williams and Duke Ellington will be inducted into the Songbook Hall of Fame.

McDermott said the Songbook Series is particularly exciting with appearances

by Mathis, Rita Moreno and Ben Vereen.

Along with acts such as Knight, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Righteous Brothers, the pop/rock series features violinist Damien Escobar Nov. 21.

Two country acts, Lovett and Trish Yearwood, are scheduled so far. McDermott said he expects more.

“Country acts tend to announce two or three months before they go on tour, so it’s hard to book a country artist six or eight months out,” McDermott said. “If we get the right country artist, it might be the right fit for our Encore Series.”

The Encore Series are acts that will only be sold separately after the performers have been scheduled.

“These will probably be artists we can book the second half of the year with great name recognition,” McDermott said. “We know we end each year with a bang.”

For instance, Amy Grant and Tony Bennett appeared earlier this month but the concerts were added later.

Subscribers to Classical, Songbook, Jazz and Create Your Own Series (four or more) will have first opportunity at purchasing tickets for any concerts listed in the Encore Series.

Among the other special events will be “Napoleon Dynamite: A Conversation with Jon Heder & Efren Ramirez” Dec 5.

Monty Python’s John Cleese’s appearance Nov. 14 will be another special event, McDermott said.

Suggested pairings: I visited Prodigy for lunch during a work meeting, so no booze.

But the bar does have an excellent list of craft beers on tap that would pair well with a burger.

‘Cipollino’ coming to Tarkington

BALLET “I like that I can be funny and boss people around that are older than me,” the 12-year-old Greene said.

Carmel-based IBC presents “Cipollino: A Fairytale Ballet” at 3 p.m. May 19 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. It is staged by Alyona Yakovleva-Randall and based on choreography by Henrik Mayorov.

The story is about fruits and vegetables.

Prince Lemon and General Tomato put taxes on water and air for villagers.

Carmel resident Ethan Gold is in the title role of Cipollino, who fights the unjust treatment.

“He leads the protest against the tax,” Gold said. “They take Cipollino’s father, and Cipollino and Radish try to save him.”

Carmel High School freshman Maren Goddard, 15, plays Magnolia, the lead flower.

“It’s a challenging ballet because the choreography is so unique,” Goddard said.

“Radish is a fun role. A lot of the dances are contemporary-based, and we get sad,” Happel said. “But this one is super happy.

The choreography is so different. I’m excited to smile, have fun and act on stage.”

Ian Anderson-Conlon, 17, in his first year at IBC, performs as General Tomato.

“It’s more challenging and it’s a different role than I’ve ever done,” Anderson-Conlon said. “I’m more like a bad person who is under the rule of Prince Lemon. I do what I’m told and watch the villagers. The acting I feel has been more of a challenge than dancing because it’s a different kind of acting.”

Primary Prevention Specialist – Volunteer Recruitment and Management Location: Noblesville, IN | Type: Full Time | Organization: Prevail, Inc.

Description: Prevail, Inc. provides crisis intervention and restorative support services for adult, adolescent and child survivors of crime and abuse to residents of Hamilton and surrounding counties. Prevail is seeking a full-time primary prevention specialist to implement, expand, evaluate and report on the 100 Men Campaign to engage men and boys in the primary prevention of sexual violence and other intersecting violence issues.

This position will require some evening and weekend hours.

Duties: Manage Prevail’s 100 Men Campaign, including recruiting and managing a volunteer base. Participate in statewide prevention partnerships. Develop the agency’s resource and knowledge base for engaging men and boys in the primary prevention of sexual violence. Establish relationships within the community to engage men and boys in the primary prevention of sexual violence and other intersecting violence issues.

Participate with the agency’s Primary Prevention team to implement the community primary prevention plan. Educate the community about the importance of engaging men and boys in these efforts.

Education: B.A/B.S. from an accredited institution in a relevant field preferred.

Work Experience: Experience in community engagement is preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as a commitment to social justice, required.
