Dillinger presents on State of the County

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com For three decades, Hamilton County Commissioner Steve Dillinger update has delivered the State of the County address to the local business community.

Last month, the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce again invited Dillinger to highlight accomplishments of 2018 and discuss 2019 projects to a record crowd of more than 400 people at Embassy Suites Conference Center in Noblesville.

Dillinger began by introducing new Sheriff Dennis Quakenbush and Superior Court 1 Judge Mike Casati. He also presented retired Judge Steve Nation with the Hamilton County Continental Award, the highest honor any citizen can receive from the county. He then addressed the topics of county finances, infrastructure, tourism and projects.

MONEY Dillinger said the county is the richest in the state, with a $90,582 median household income. The state average is $52,182. The county also has a 5 percent poverty rate, compared to the state average of 14.6 percent. Moreover, the county’s median home value is $240,000, which is $110,000 higher than the state average. Dillinger also said the county has seen a 12.2 percent growth rate in the past five years, which he attributes to a higher concentration of goodpaying jobs, short commuting distances and connectivity to a major metropolitan area.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND ROADS Dillinger spent much of his time talking about road projects around the county, primarily the Ind. 37 corridor project, which will convert the intersections to no-stoplight, dogbone-style roundabouts above the highway.

Major work on intersections along Ind. 37 will begin in September and November, and first phases of work will be complete next winter.

Another large road project is at 146th Street and Allisonville Road.

Construction on the intersection will begin in September 2020 and will be completed in fall 2021 at a cost of $22.6 million.

In Noblesville, Dillinger identified the extension and expansion of Pleasant Street as a major need.

“This is a joint project between the City of Noblesville and Hamilton County,” Dillinger said. “It will cross over the river, where we will be building a bridge. The intersection of Pleasant and Eighth streets is hopefully where we will start on this. This is one of the most important projects that we’ll do.”

said, and a study shows that with the completion of Phase 1, there will be a 29 percent reduction in traffic between Eighth Street and River Road.

In downtown Noblesville, the county is working with the city to widen the Logan Street bridge to create a pedestrian bridge.

Construction began in October 2018 and will be complete in September at a cost of $4.3 million.

In Carmel, Phase 1 of the Lowes Way connection project is ongoing. Construction began in March 2018 and is set to be complete in July at a cost of $9.1 million. The project’s second phase will start immediately thereafter and will be complete in July 2020 at a cost of $6.4 million TOURISM According to data from Hamilton County Tourism, Dillinger said visitors to the county and overall spending in the county is up.

In 2018, more than 4 million visitors spent approximately $820 million – an 11.1 percent increase from the previous year. More than $1.5 million hotel room nights were sold, and since 2005, nearly $10 million has been reinvested locally.

CAPITAL PROJECTS The $13.5 million Hamilton County Jail expansion should be complete this month, Dillinger said. The project broke ground in September 2018 and adds 120 to 136 beds for an increase of inmates the county has seen since House Bill 1006 passed in 2016. The bill requires Level 6 felons to be incarcerated in the county in which their crime was committed, rather than be transferred to a larger prison. The jail’s current capacity is 294, and Dillinger said the inmate population is nearing 400.

Dillinger said the long-awaited expansion of the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center is still on hold after bids came in higher than expected. He said the project will continue to be looked at.

“Last year, there was a lot of talk about (this project), but just like in any business, we had to prioritize,” Dillinger said. “We followed its design and did some utility work, but it’s on hold in the mean time.”

Fundraiser to benefit disease research

By Jessica Hoover news@currentinfishers.com The Bev Hartig Huntington’s Disease Foundation will play host to its event 10th Annual Fundraiser at 7 p.m.

April 27 at the Forum Conference and Events Center, 11313 USA Pkwy., to fund Huntington’s disease research and help people in Indiana who are affected by the disease.

Huntington’s disease is a degenerative genetic brain disorder where nerve cells in the brain break down over time. There is no cure.

The foundation is named after Bev Hartig, an adopted Fishers woman who had no prior knowledge of Huntington’s disease until she received a phone call from her birth father in 1998. He was diagnosed with the disease, which meant that Hartig and her siblings had a 50 percent chance of inheriting it. Hartig took a blood test and learned that she carried the gene for Huntington’s disease.

In 2010, she and her friends formed the Bev Hartig Huntington’s Disease Foundation.

“We want to get the word out and try to raise awareness for a disease that people are facing here in our community,” foundation board member Cecilia Coble said.

Two Fishers girls to travel for hockey

By Jessica Hoover news@currentinfishers.com Malaya Anaba, a seventh-grader at Fall Creek Junior High School, and sports Emma Pickering, an eighthgrader at Fishers Junior High School, have been selected to play hockey in the World Selects Invitational in Europe in April.

Because the girls are different ages, they will play on separate teams. Anaba will play for the Midwest Selects team in Geneva, Switzerland and Chamonix, France April 12-21, and Pickering will play for the North American Selects team in Bordeaux, France and San Sebastian, Spain, April 19-28.

“I’m excited to meet new people and see how hockey is in other parts of the world,” Pickering said. “I want to see how North American teams can relate to other countries.”

Anaba and Pickering will compete against teams from North America and Europe, including teams from the U.S., Latvia, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, Russia, Norway, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Finland. The girls also will participate in a mixed-nation game, teamed with players from different nations who likely don’t speak the same language. There also will be an opening-ceremonies event, a jersey exchange and guided trips of cities.

“I want to thank all my coaches who have helped me get to the point where I am,” Anaba said. “They all believed in me that I could be to where I am now.”

Anaba also plays for the Indy Junior Fuel PeeWee AA team and the Cleveland Lady Barons 12U team. Pickering plays for the Cleveland Lady Barons 14U AAA Tier 1 team.

Fishers resident starts Indiana Bridge Foundation

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Twelve years ago, Pam Rhine had never played a hand of bridge. nonprofit Then, the Fishers resident retired 24 years ago to enjoy being a grandmother and keep busy with church mission trips. Twelve years later Rine finally discovered she had some free time. She learned about the Indianapolis Bridge Center and signed up.

“I found a fun, diverse group of people playing an intriguing game at all levels,” Rhine said. “Most people in my first class had played social bridge and were interested in learning duplicate, so I was behind. I met a new friend (Chris Franklin) who took me under her wing and insisted I start playing in real games with her.”

Rhine said bridge opened a new world for her.

“It’s not the answer to life’s mysteries, it’s just a place you can go where somebody knows your name,” Rhine said. “I’m still taking classes and learning every time I play, but for me, the social aspect is key.”

Rhine said she is so passionate about the game that she and her friends Joyce Pepple and Jim Rowen started the Indiana Bridge Foundation, a nonprofit.

“Our mission is to educate Hoosiers on the benefits of bridge and assist them as they learn, play and thrive,” Rhine said.

The Indianapolis Bridge Center, 8030 Castleway Dr., will offer two beginners’ classes in April. There will be one starting at 6:30 p.m. April 2, every Tuesday for nine weeks.

Another will be at 9 a.m. every Thursday for nine weeks. The cost for the nine-week session is $175.

Lantern Road teacher to direct last choir concert

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com On March 22, Lantern Road Elementary School music teacher Connie music LaRocco will direct her last choir concert after 24 years at LRE. Thirty of LaRocco’s former students - including one from California - will return to sing with the elementary choir, and 20 more will join as musicians. The concert will feature 174 elementary students. The handbell choir also will perform.

“My choir kiddos, when they leave me, they love to come back and play their instruments and perform and accompany the choir,” said LaRocco, who will retire at the end of the school year.

Limited space has prevented former students from participating in previous choir concerts. LaRocco said LRE’s principal made arrangements in April 2018 to conduct LaRocco’s final concert at Fishers High School so there would be adequate room.

The free concert begins at 8 p.m.

LaRocco started the choir as an extracurricular activity in 1995 when LRE opened.

LaRocco plans to garden, travel with her husband and be a “crazy, old, bird lady” in retirement. But she will miss her students greatly.

“I’m going to miss my kids,” she said. “I know I will get bored, so I will have to do something. I can’t come back to Lantern Road (for choir) because that wouldn’t be fair to the new music teacher, but I will find ways to volunteer at the elementary schools around (Indianapolis).”

LaRocco also is considering starting a community children’s choir in Fishers.

A look at the 1800s Nickel Plate Bar and Grill Commentary by Robert Bowling The Nickel Plate Bar and Grill has always been a popular back in the day lunch spot in downtown Fishers, serving up Indiana’s staple: breaded tenderloin sandwiches. In addition, it is a gathering place for Pittsburgh Steelers fans, which is ironic considering this is the heart of Colts country.

But long before the Nickel Plate began serving food, it had always been just a bar for as long as anyone can remember. Its prime location along the railroad tracks made it an ideal place for locals and travelers to “wet their whistle.”

It is unclear exactly when the building was erected or who might have been the first proprietor. What we do know, from the Hamilton County Ledger, is that James H. Underwood applied for a liquor license for the saloon as early as 1889. The property changed hands a couple of times before Park Crawford bought it around 1893.

Crawford’s ownership was tumultuous at times. Saloon owners were required to

get a license from the Hamilton County Commissioners. An 1888 town ordinance made it a violation to sell liquor without one. Crawford violated that ordinance in 1894 and was fined $5.

In 1897, his liquor license renewal was rejected by the commissioners because he had been charged twice with selling liquor to minors. The fine for that in Fishers Station was no more than $100 and no less than $20. Later that same year, he was arrested on a warrant out of Marion County for the same thing and for selling alcohol on Sundays.

By 1899, residents had enough of him and most signed a petition, referred to as a remonstrance, to shut the saloon down.

Next week, I will discuss how the tavern changed during the 1900s.

Robert Bowling has been a Fishers police officer for 16 years. He is a school resource officer and is the Fishers Police Dept. historian. He has a love of history and enjoys sharing it with others. He recently wrote the script and performed in the “Battle of Mudsock” re-enactment.

SCHOOL’S IN SESSION Schoolhouse 7 to reopen as café, place for students to work

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com When Curt Tappendorf purchased the old building at 12125 Cynthecover story anne Rd., he didn’t know its history. He and his wife Sarah planned to rent the building out to families. That is, until they learned that it was built in 1901 as Schoolhouse 7.

Now, the Tappendorfs plan to turn the building into a coffeehouse, Schoolhouse 7 Café, that pays homage to its past by keeping the schoolhouse feel and offering community-learning opportunities.

The Tappendorfs met with Tim Mankin, principal of HSE Intermediate and Junior High School, which sits across the street from Schoolhouse 7. Mankin informed them about the schoolhouse’s past and provided them with a binder of information he received from Dr. George Underwood, who was a student at the schoolhouse from 1933 to 1940. The binder contains items like report cards and schoolhouse photos.

Underwood, 92, is one of three surviving former Schoolhouse 7 students. He lives in Florida.

The Tappendorfs decided to bring Underwood in on their plans for the café.

“We did get in touch with Dr. George Underwood,” Curt said. “He came down to us

and met with us on-site at the end of last year. He walked us every square inch of that property and told us where he sat, where the horse and buggy dropped (the students) off every morning, where the girls and boys outhouses were.”

The Tappendorfs plan to open the café July 7 in recognition of the number seven in the schoolhouse’s name. It was the seventh one-room schoolhouse built in Fall Creek Township.

“We are trying to keep seven as a prominent, recognizable feature of the business,” Curt said. “We have a lot of work to do between now and then. We’ve got a pretty good plan in place and are in the process now of restoring and renovating it.”

The café will be two stories. Orders will be placed on the first floor, where there will be seating and an outdoor patio. Drive-thru service also will be offered. On the second floor, there will be a large community-style table constructed out of the schoolhouse’s original floor joists. The Tappendorfs are incorporating the original wooden floor planks as the face of the coffee bar.

For Sarah, a fourth-grade teacher at Geist Elementary, the education aspect brings the project full circle. She plans for the café to provide Hamilton Southeastern Schools students with an outlet to display their creative

works.

“It’s an opportunity to have real students work in here to keep that school theme,” Sarah said. “There will be a designated spot to have kids’ artwork. If they put together writing pieces or books with a bookshelf display, it feels more like a real audience and authentic spot to show their work.”

The Tappendorfs have four children, ages 7, 8, 12 and 13. They plan to make the business a family operation.

“It’s a school, and we are keeping that in attracting students to come in and do their work,” Sarah said. “There will be study-type tables, which keeps some of that setting true to a learning environment.”

Curt said the family has received plenty of encouragment from Underwood.

“He tells me, ‘Keep going,’” Curt said. “It was very meaningful for him to come to that meeting and explain to me his recollection of the property, and the schoolhouse was unbelievable.”

Underwood was delighted to share his knowledge.

“I think it’s a great idea to preserve something, and it’s personal to me,” Underwood said. “To preserve it that way and get it going, I think will be a great idea.”

Underwood said he’s visited the schoolhouse a few times recently to help the Tap-

pendorfs form an idea of what the inside of what it looked like when he was a student.

“I’m trying to help out to give an idea of what that would be like as far as the inside, such as where we put our coats and where we put our boots and that type of thing,” Underwood said. “I think it’s a good idea.

Personally, I just hope it works.”

Coffee operations and food options The Tappendorf family is partnering with the Stayton family, which owns Brickhouse Coffee in Greenwood.

“We are partnering with them to have local roasted beans every week,” Curt Tappendorf said. “They are going to work mostly on the operation side.

They’re the ones who understand the coffee business.”

Curt said Schoolhouse 7 will offer a simple menu in addition to coffee beverages. The menu will include items such as soufflé, chocolate cake, madeto-order omelets and locally made pastries and donuts. Some items will be made from Tappendorf family recipes.

Commentary by Terry Anker It can be said with abundant certainty that social media has changed the way in which we interact with each other. Countless studies, articles and even full-on books have been dedicated to assessing the cultural phenomena unleashed by our newly cultivated ability to share, perhaps overshare, the various details and vagrancies of our daily existence.

We tell events big and small. The news of a new baby in our family or the loss of a tire in the ubiquitous central Indiana potholes is spread with equal and banal distribution.

We post our vacation pictures, bringing with them both shared joy and a modicum of envy. We post half-baked postures and opinions alongside our well-considered and executed musings. We post more links in the prayer chain seeking to lift up someone who is struggling.

Along the way, we’ve begun to understand how best to present ourselves, hopefully our better selves, to the world.

In so doing, we’ve become curators in our own lives. The more tech savvy among us have figured out, by research or by accident, what kinds of posts are among the more appealing. Called by some clickbait, the notion of creating our own headline has become an obsession for us. We find ourselves validated or rebuked by the number of casual “likes” that might correspond to our reveries.

Eventually, society will find its watermark. Our habits will bend to the collective will of the social media marketplace. Then, it will all seem second nature. In the meantime, we endure the random passerby blocking traffic in search of the perfect “selfie” to post and wonder: “Is this my good side?”

Wall of despair Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’m experiencing a bit of a rage stroke and need to vent my frustrations before I punch an innocent wall. And though humor our liar-liar-pants-on-fire president certainly has warranted several of my recent hypertensive episodes, today I’ll be complaining about a more mundane topic, the cost of college (I haven’t the space for a Trump tirade!).

My husband Doo and I have four children, the oldest of whom is a sophomore at an in-state university. Our twins are seniors in high school, and our youngest is a freshman. We have saved enough to pay for one year of college for each of them, with the understanding that they will be responsible for the rest through scholarships, loans and part-time work. Oh, the naiveté!

For starters, we have perfectly wonderful, but perfectly average, kiddos. No top athletes, artistic phenoms or academic wunderkinds here. We also make too much money.

Not me, of course; I’m a teacher in Indiana!

But Doo does well enough that financial aid isn’t in the cards, so even if they stay close, they will have to come up with $75,000 each for undergrad.

Why not just borrow? Well, governmentbacked loans only cover about a fifth, and a 20-year old who works part-time reffing intramurals and selling Cutco knives doesn’t qualify for a private one. So, if said young adult wants to remove the hold on his registrar’s account, pay rent and eat, his mom has to Venmo him cash and then become a cosigner. Multiply that by three more moochers (two of whom are hell-bent on heading west), and you see why I’ve been eye-balling that wall for the past 30 hours.

Editor, I appeal to our state’s legislature to not pass legislation that would allow teachers to carry a gun into a school.

I wish our schools did not have to think about the reality of gun shootings, but we experience gun violence every day in our nation. During the Cold War era, students dove under their wooden desks in case of a nuclear attack from Russia. I doubt if a piece of wood would have protected any child if a nuclear bomb hit a school.

Teachers need to focus their energies on monitoring student learning and on creating learning environments devoid of fear.

They need to know that leaders are working to stop guns from entering schools. They need to know that mental health initiatives effectively reach students who may be disengaged. They need to know that everyone who owns a gun has taken precautions so that guns are not accessible to minors.

I am in favor of gun-control reform, including strong background checks, a waiting period before a gun can be purchased and a requirement that requires gun owners to go through a follow-up registration review every four years (much like we go through with our driver’s license). I am in favor of ongoing training of all police officers to support them in keeping our communities welcoming and safe places for everyone.

Let’s not add another responsibility on our children’s teachers.

Udder nonsense Commentary by Dick Wolfsie As I mentioned last week, my wife and I are trying to learn a little Spanish in preparation for our trip to South humor America. When I searched for translation options online, I found: “Cow to English” on the site Lingojam. I’m not kidding. That’s news — no, moos — we can use.

Many cattle expressions have beefed up our language: “Being put out to pasture;” “milking something for all it’s worth;” “cash cow;” “’til the cows come home;” “holy cow!;” “a bunch of bull;” “cowlick;” and my favorite, “power steering.”

There is an inexplicable compulsion shared by everyone who drives past cows grazing in pastures. The urban dictionary coined the term “Bovilexia” for the urge to open the car window and yell, “Moo!” Cows have a lot of time to contemplate — more so than dogs, who usually have family obligations. What do cows think about? I’d give a Big Mac to know.

SkyZone slated to open in Westfield

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Before he owned SkyZone, Carmel resident Tom Holsworth said he and his new biz wife Danielle often took their kids there.

“I have four small children and they’re all active, and one of the things Danielle and I pride ourselves in is having fun with our kids, so we have been going to SkyZone for years, and I jump right with them,” Holsworth said.

“It’s a big deal to us to be a part of our kids growing up. My kids love to go two to three times a week and jump for hours at a time.

That’s the reason why I bought it, to be a part of my children’s growing up and be a part of their childhood.”

Holsworth owns the SkyZone in Fishers, 10080 E. 121st St. He also will own the new SkyZone in Westfield, which is slated to open at the northwest quadrant of Ind. 32 and Dartown Road before the end of the year.

SkyZone will occupy 40,000 square feet of a building it will share with Laser Flash.

“It (SkyZone) will have the latest technology there is out there. We will have some virtual-reality entertainment sections, we will have our mainstay, which is the dodgeball courts, trampolines and the stuff we already

have now,” Holsworth said. “I think we are doing some really innovative technology on the (virtual reality) side that will be in the park.

People will be really surprised how SkyZone has evolved from a trampoline park. There will be a lot of neat technological advances at the Westfield park that haven’t been seen before in any park.”

In addition to a providing fun conduit for physical activity, SkyZone also offers a SkyZone Cares program in 71 schools, including some in Hamilton County.

“We provide services to kids who may not have the means to come to SkyZone,” Holsworth said. “So, if they read five books and

they show that to their teacher, the teacher signs off and gives the kids a 30-minute jump pass to come for free.”

Holsworth credits much of SkyZone’s success to its staff.

“Obviously, SkyZone has had a great brand and reputation for a long time,” he said. “They were the innovators of the industry, and I think they still are. A key piece to that ,obviously, is the people in Hamilton County, but I think another large part of that is the staff and the executive staff that run the park itself.”

Narducci returns to ‘Camelot’ in IO production

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com It’s natural that Daniel Narducci will take on the role of King Arthur in the Indianapolis Opera production. musical Narducci had played Lancelot on a tour where the late Robert Goulet, who originated the role of Lancelot in the 1960 Broadway production of “Camelot,” had transitioned into the role of King Arthur.

“For him to accept our invitation to do his debut as Arthur after literally doing Lancelot all over the world (is amazing),” Indianapolis Opera general director David Starkey said. “He’s been approached multiple times (about) when is he going to do the Arthur debut. It’s a great honor for him to come alongside us and do that.”

Indianapolis Opera will present “Camelot” at 7:30 p.m. March 22 and 23 and 2:30 p.m. March 24 at the Schrott Center for the Performing Arts on Butler’s campus in Indianapolis.

“We’re going to put the opera touch on it,” said Starkey, a Geist resident.

Narducci, a Bloomington resident, is on the voice faculty at the University of Indianapolis.

“This (musical) for me dates back to high school,” Narducci said. “It’s the first musical I ever participated in. I was in the chorus with Cheshire (Conn.) Community Theater, so I have a soft spot in my heart for this show.”

Narducci said he was inspired by his mother after telling her about a baritone in the production singing, “If Ever I Would Leave you.”

“She said, ‘I’m sure he was good, but have you ever heard the original with Robert Goulet?” Narducci said. “She put on the (album) and I was blown away. That would have been 1983. From that point on, Robert Goulet was very much on my mind as far as his singing.”

Narducci, 51, did two tours as Lancelot.

The first was a six-month tour with British actor James Warwick in 1995.

“We started in Canada and zigzagged across the United States and ended in Anchorage,” he said.

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 7690 E. 96th St., Fishers What to get: Prime Rib Egg Rolls Price: $12 Anna’s take: This was my first time at Peterson’s, and I was impressed. I stopped in for some quick appetizers and a glass of wine in a quiet corner of the bar, but I can’t wait to go back. Peterson’s is fine dining, so dress accordingly. I tried the Prime Rib Egg Rolls, which were delicious cylinders of prime rib, white cheddar, soy jus, wasabi horseradish aioli and scallions. The outside breading was slightly crunchy, and as soon as I bit into the tender prime rib, it was game over. I should’ve ordered two serv-

ings. I’m a fan of both prime rib and egg rolls, but I have never combined the two before.

I also sampled the calamari, served on top of Napa slaw with a side of ginger orange chili sauce ($15). Delicious.

Check out Peterson’s if you’re on a date, if you’re on an after-hours business meeting or if you just want to enjoy a quiet corner in the bar with some prime food choices.

Suggested pairings: I ordered a glass of the Rabble Wine Company’s Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, Calif. ($12). It was delicious, and there are plenty of wine options on the menu if dry reds aren’t up your alley.

Have you ever put spicy mustard on a sandwich? If you inadvertently glob on too much of the good grammar guy stuff, you’ll swear you just snorted wasabi. When it comes to spices that are in your face (literally and figuratively), a little bit can go a long way.

In the same way, hyphens and dashes — when sprinkled into sentences properly — add just the right punch. Not only will we learn how to use the hyphen (-) properly today, but we’ll also learn how to use both the en (–) and em (—) dashes.

Let’s start with hyphens. Hyphens are like glue for two words that are connected. Use hyphens in compound adjectives, which are adjectives that precede a noun they modify in order to connect them together. Examples of compound adjectives include well-known, blue-haired, one-eyed and ill-conceived. City of Fishers, Indiana Director of Engineering One Municipal Drive Fishers, Indiana 46038 Project: Roadway and Sewer Construction – South Street from Lantern Road to Fishers Pointe Blvd Notice is hereby given that the City of Fishers, Indiana will receive sealed bids for the Project addressed to the Director of Engineering, City of Fishers, City Hall, One Municipal Drive, Fishers, Indiana 46038 until 10:00 a.m. on or before March 21, 2019. Any Bid may be withdrawn prior to the scheduled closing time for receipt of Bids, but no Bidder shall withdraw its Bid within sixty (60) days after the actual opening of the Bids. The Bid Bonds and certified checks of unsuccessful bidders will be returned by the Owner upon selection of the successful Bidder, execution of the Agreement, and provision of the required Performance and Payment Bonds.

An opportunity for a pre-bid meeting will be offered on March 14, 2019 at 1:30 PM in the Fishers City Hall Administration Conference Room, located on the Second Floor of Fishers City Hall. Contractors with questions regarding the plans and specifications of this project should plan on attending the pre-bid meeting.

Wage rates on the Project shall not be less than the prevailing wage scale as determined in accordance with Ind. Code §5-16-6 et seq. and include in the Project Manual, and the Contractor must conform to the antidiscrimination provisions of Ind. Code §5-16-6 et seq.

A Performance Bond with good and sufficient surety on the form provided in the Project Manual, shall be required of the successful Bidder in an amount equal to at least one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price, conditioned upon the faithful performance of the Agreement. The surety of the Performance Bond may not be released until one (1) year after the Owner’s final settlement with the Contractor.

The Contractor shall provide a Payment Bond to the Owner, approved by Owner and for the benefit of the Owner, in an amount equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price. The Payment Bond is binding on the Contractor, its subcontractors, and their successors and assigns for the payment of all indebtedness to a person for labor and services performed, material furnished, or services rendered. The Payment Bond must state that it is for the benefit of the subcontractors, laborers, material suppliers, and those performing services. The surety of the Payment Bond may not be released until one (1) year after the Owner’s final settlement with the Contractor.

All out-of-state bidder corporations must have a certificate of authority to do business in the State.

Grand Canyon: A natural wonder Commentary by Don Knebel On February 26, 2019, Grand Canyon National Park, located in Arizona, celebrated its 100th anniversary. The history of the canyon is about 20 million times longer. travel By any definition, the Grand Canyon, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, is awesome. It is 227 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and a mile deep. Equally awesome are the natural processes that created it.

Beginning about 2 billion years ago, a sea that covered the area began depositing layers of sediment. During the next 1 1/2 billion years or so, about 40 distinct layers were deposited. About 75 million years ago, the geologic events that created the Rocky Mountains began to lift the area, eventually creating the 7,000-foot-high Colorado Plateau.

At some point, a river began flowing on the plateau toward the Pacific Ocean. As the raising of the plateau increased the river’s elevation, the water in what is now the Colorado River began traveling faster and faster toward the ocean, eroding away one after

another layer of the soft sedimentary rock.

The erosion accelerated and widened when the river frequently flooded from melting snow and glaciers in the Rockies. Erosion from fast-moving tributaries flowing into the river further eroded the canyon walls. With the Colorado River still about 2,000 feet about sea level, the erosion continues and the canyon is slowly getting deeper.

Grand Canyon National Park offers access to the canyon’s north and south rims, with the best and most popular views provided by nine overlooks along the south rim, open year-round. The north rim, open only in the summer, provides access to mule rides deep into the canyon. Access to the west rim is through lands controlled by the Hualapai Indian Tribe, which built a hugely popular glassbottomed skywalk over the canyon.

It was in a jazzercise class that Pat had to face the music. Her knee was shot. That’s when she turned to Community’s Center for Joint Health.

After being given a what-to-expect guide and participating in the pre-op class, she had a total knee replacement. The sole purpose was to dance with her husband at their 50th anniversary party. Mission accomplished. Pat also is back to traveling and doing jazzercise. At age 75, her next goal is to outlive the 20 year warranty on that new titanium knee. Exceptional care. Simply delivered.
