Democratic committee holds Triple J Dinner in Hamilton County

The Hamilton County Democratic Central Committee held a fundraiser election dinner July 21 featuring three candidates. The event, called the 2018 Triple J Dinner, was at the American Legion in Carmel and featured candidates Joselyn Whitticker, John Aguilera and Jim Harper.

Each candidate had a few minutes to present on their campaign platform. Whitticker, running for state auditor, said trust needs to be put back into government.

“We are on fire because we bring something to the table,” she said. “You empower each other, and that empowerment comes because of who you are. I’m running because you know I’m the only African American you’re going to see on that ticket, and I’m the only female you’re going to see on that ticket.”

Whitticker said everyone is important and deserves equal protection.

“I think we need to be transparent,” she said. “We need to put the trust back in government. Right now, my democracy and your democracy is under attack.”

Whitticker is a former Marion Common Council president and spent a 35-year career in education as a teacher and principal. She owns an instructional curriculum consulting business. For more on Whitticker and her campaign, visit joselyn4indiana.com.

Aguilera, who is running for state treasurer, said the local community will become better if quality Democrats are elected in November.

“This is an opportunity I do not take lightly,” he said. “There hasn’t been a Democratic treasurer elected in 39 years, and there hasn’t been a member of the Latino community ever elected. That’s going to change this year. I saw a need for the legislature to be more representative of Indiana’s diverse population.”

Aguilera said he plans to invest in resources such as E911, which is support for wireless phone users who dial 911.

“It expands the possibility of response in some of the most rural areas in the state,” he said.

Aguilera formerly served as a state representative from East Chicago. He served on the Ways and Means Committee and was vice president of the National Hispanic Council Caucus of State Legislators, was vice president of the Transportation Committee of the National Conference of State Legislators and served two terms as a Lake County councilman. Work is under way on 56th Street’s sidewalk extension in Lawrence. The project is aimed at filling the gap in the city’s pedestrian network and will have the benefit of enhancing overall pedestrian connectivity.

As part of the project, curb ramps will be updated to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the traffic signals at the intersection of Boy Scout Road and 56th Street also will be updated.

“We are honest. We are going to tell you how we feel,” Brown said. “I can tell you right now, he’s mad. He’s mad that Connie Lawson, the current secretary of state, has not taken money from the federal government to secure our elections.”

Brown spoke on how Harper is leading a tour across the state to talk about why he believes the state needs better election security.

“He’s mad that we have the shortest voting hours in the nation,” she said. “I can tell you, as a mother of an 18-month old, and the polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m., if I have to get him to day care and get to the polls, that leaves me almost zero time for mistakes.”

Hamilton County ranked 14th, the only Indiana county to rank in the top 25. Hamilton County did not rank in the top 25 of the 2017 study, which has been conducted by SmartAsset for the past four years.

Across the nation, five of last year’s 10 happiest counties scored in the top 10 again this year. No single state or region dominated the top 10. Nine states are represented in the top 10, and every geographic region is represented in the top 25. The Midwest has a slight edge with nine counties representing in the top 25.

At the bottom of the list, Georgia counties make up five of the 10 least happy counties in the study.

Leaders in Hamilton County and Indianapolis are working development to ensure White River is more than just a geographic divider.

The objective is to turn a 58-mile stretch of the river in Hamilton and Marion counties into a major asset that drives recreational programming, development and culture around the water.

In May, Hamilton County Tourism and the Hamilton County Commissioners joined with the City off Indianapolis and Visit Indy’s Tourism Tomorrow to kick of the 12-month initiative. Massachusetts-based Agency Landscape + Planning has been hired to lead development. The company works solely on projects aimed at cultural development and environmentalism.

The plan moved forward with a series of public meetings, the first of which was July 11 in Noblesville. At the meeting, design team members presented analysis findings, gathered feedback and input from community members and discussed progress of the plan.

the plan to re-think how residents and visitors can connect with the White River,” said Brenda Myers, president and CEO of Hamilton County Tourism. “We hold the river in high regard as a part of our heritage and look forward to hearing community feedback about the White River Vision Plan’s progress.”

More specifically, those involved with the plan said it’s being developed for residents and visitors to have a connector between city attractions - such as arts and entertainment venues and trails and housing - in a larger effort to educate on the value of a

river corridor in the community.

During a 12-month period, work will include planning and analysis of current conditions of the river and waterfront areas with a focus on connectivity and programming. Leaders said another key factor is destination development, which includes enhancement of existing places, activation of new spaces and identification of areas in need of significant ecological protection or restoration.

A final plan is expected in spring 2019.

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com In advance of an April trades, technology and innovation symcover story posium, the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and the City of Lawrence have combined forces to identify a trades district within the city.

When Trace Yates became the executive director of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, he said he was given an agenda of events to organize, including a jobs fair.

Yates said he wanted to put on an event that combined workforce development and a job fair. “(The city) and I put our heads together, and we looked at what could we do to honor that but have a more comprehensive conversation,” Yates said. “So, we identified some strong performing business sectors in Lawrence which are traditional trades. Traditional trades have been strong and will continue to be strong.”

Today, those sectors make up the Law-

rence Trades District, an area along Pendleton Pike from Shadeland Avenue, just west of I-465, northeast to just past 56th Street and Mitthoeffer Road.

At Fort Benjamin Harrison alone, the tech industry has a strong presence with companies such as Bloomerang, a fundraising software firm. It is among 24 tech and innovation companies at the fort.

“There is a technology hub emerging here on the campus of Fort Benjamin Harrison, and not much is known about it,” Yates said. “This (symposium) was a way to tell people about it and expand this narrative with business sectors and also what this means for the developing workforce and education of students.”

The McKenzie Center for innovation and technology, a technical trades training and career center off 75th Street in Lawrence, also plays an important role in developing the future workforce in Lawrence and central Indiana.

In partnership with local universities and colleges, The McKenzie Center offers 24 dualcredit courses for students before graduating high school.

“It’s expanded narrative, an amplified conversation about economic development and workforce development and talent development in Lawrence and Lawrence Township,” Yates said.

Today, the district includes companies such as Mill Supplies, Hammer Lighting and Grip, Roberts Glass and C&C Supply, among others.

“We anticipate both a trades district and workforce development in this zone,” Lawrence Mayor Steve Collier said. “We are seeking to solidify a commitment from a second major employer to join Mission Mechanical and anticipate expanding our partnership with Lawrence Township’s MacKenzie Career Center in the creation of training classrooms in the district.”

“There are some letters of intent in place for trades industry businesses,” Yates said.

“I think that site is identified as the desire to have some sort of trades training center there as well to become a real hub for not only operating businesses who deal with those types of sectors, like plumbing and electrical, but also a training center and a

Leading up to the 2018 legislative session, Holcomb said on numerous occasions that approximately 92,000 skilled trades jobs in the state have gone unfilled. In his 2018 State of the State address, Holcomb said workforce development will be an ongoing challenge for at least a decade. Many of Indiana’s filled trades jobs will be vacant when baby boomers retire.

In March, Holcomb signed two workforce development bills, which appropriated $5 million of the state’s budget for additional programs and help employers train workers.

“The central Indiana region is talking quite a lot about technology innovation and how those two sectors intersect with trades,” said Trace Yates, executive director of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. “For example, these new tech hubs being built. Guess what? Trades people have to build those, and technology is certainly within trades day-to-day operation. So, these worlds intersect.”

Brooklyn-born songwriter Vic Mizzy turned his considerable talents from popular music in the 1940s and ‘50s to the emerging medium of television in the 1960s.

Therein came some of his most memorable, if not significant, contributions, including the theme songs from “The Addams Family” and “Green Acres.” Thanks to long runs on the networks, followed by generations of re-runs and remakes, these simple tunes have earned a place in our collective memories.

In “Green Acres,” Mizzy uses just 76 words to lay out the tension between Eddie Albert’s Oliver Wendell Douglas, New York power attorney who hopes to commune more directly with nature, and Eva Gabor’s Lisa, who exclaims, “New York is where I’d rather stay – I get allergic smelling hay.”

Mizzy has outlined a central tenant of our evolving civilization: What is it to be a human in our natural state?

While an increasing number of us today seek urban densities, a generation ago the trend was to flee these confines to more suburban locales. Even further back, we had a preference for the rural. Even in our vacations, we further confuse the question. Millions camp, sleeping under the open sky much as our ancestors did for centuries. Others travel great distances to enjoy luxuries.

Yet, as our society continues to plod on, we hear echoes of our past. How do we reconcile our desire to contribute to Albert’s the chores and still enjoy Gabor’s the stores? Are we really getting back to nature if we are “glamping” in some Victorian safari tent? Is it a dodge or just a compromise to our conflicted selves?

By the time most of you are reading this, I will have essentially survived Summer 2018. Woo hoo! I return to the classroom Aug. 2, and while that means humor I will soon be subjected to long days with other peoples’ sometimes smelly and usually angsty teenagers, it also means that in a few weeks, a beautiful yellow bus will come to collect my own precious angels. Can I get an amen?

Don’t get me wrong. We’ve had a great summer here at chez Wilson. Quality relaxation time, some fantastic vacations and plenty of Netflix binges. But enough already. Enough of the sleeping ‘til noon or three. Enough of the basement Fortnite marathons. Enough of our college kid all up in my grill. I don’t know about your family, but mine functions more smoothly with schedules and routines and expectations of punctuality and productiveness. My pathetic attempt at a chore chart did not cut it.

Bottom line? Everyone is fed up with everyone else. The girls have created a biochemical wasteland in their bathroom.

The boys have nearly come to blows over the third car. My husband Doo insists that I complete a honey-do list a mile long because “I’m on vacation.” Yes, I’m on vacation, which by definition means “no work.”

See what I mean? Even my partner-incrime is driving me bat-poo crazy. The only solution, my friends, is sweet academic imprisonment. We need places to be and things to do. We need homework and practices and bedtimes. We need our lives to return to normal. So though it may be blasphemous to say, I can’t wait for school to begin!

Why do our young male students want to harm their classmates?

Editor, In every school shooting, it has been a young, white male who wants to harm his classmates. This is where the problem begins and we should be asking why. What is going on in the heads of these shooters that brings them to carry a gun or guns to school with the intention of harming other students and teachers?

Are they being bullied and excluded by other students? Are they being overlooked by the teachers while in the classroom? Do they associate with other students who have the tendency of wanting to harm other students for

whatever reason? What is their home life like? Do they come from a dysfunctional family or are growing up in a one-parent family? Are they on medication that has a tendency to affect reasonable thinking? Are they on prescription drugs not intended for them or are they using illegal drugs which alters the minds and actions of humans?

The answers to these questions must be asked and the discovery must be revealed to our society. We can start here to try and solve any problems these young males have before another tragedy happens again.

My problems started after I disconnected my cable in the basement. I watch television downstairs while riding humor my exercise bike, but if the plot gets exciting, I sometimes forget to pedal and by the time the show is over, I’ve only “traveled” about 28 feet — not even a first down. It was time to get rid of the distraction.

When the cable company got my receiver box back in the mail, they thought I wanted to discontinue my entire service package, and the next day all my televisions displayed the message, CUSTOMER DISABLED, which is a very unfortunate way to phrase my predicament. To fix this problem, they needed to know all the numbers on the backs of all the cable boxes on all five TVs. I have a great photo of my wife scrunched behind our big-screen TV, nudged in between a giant fern and a china cabinet, trying to read the tiny numbers and talk on her cellphone at the same time.

We were told by the customer service rep that the soonest they could come out to fix this was five days. No cable television for five days was scary. Mary Ellen and I

love each other; we just weren’t sure how we’d fill all that time.

While on the phone with our cable rep, I asked if she had any suggestions to reduce my cable bill. This is not what she really said, but how it sounded to me: “If you switch to Direct TV, it will lower your bill, but it’s only a short-term promotional rate … or you can just stream your shows, but then you can’t use your DVR. Or you can buy an Apple TV box but you have to buy them for all the TVs, unless your TVs are smart … or you could subscribe to Hulu, or get a dish, assuming we can get service there. You could also watch TV over the internet, but you may not get any local stations without an antenna.”

Finally, she told me: “We also have a website where you can diagnose your specific problem and find a solution all by yourself.

“By the way, I think that’s also the future of medicine.

Blake’s Smiles supports autism causes

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Blake Dauby is an accomplished singer, a skilled musician and an avid creator of music videos. giving back In addition, he is a dancer, video editor and a gifted craftsman who loves nothing more than making people smile — literally — through his art.

His signature items are handmade puzzle-piece smiles, forged in his pottery studio. He gifts them to anyone in need of a smile.

“You keep it as long as you need it or pass it on to someone else who needs it,” said Dauby, a 20-year-old Carmel resident whose varied talents and eclectic tastes belie a lifelong condition that doesn’t deter him.

Dauby has autism.

“Blake has never let this disorder slow him down,” said Steve Dauby, Blake’s father. “He is very active in his community, school and various clubs. He has participated in show choir, orchestra, Best Buddies, student government, dance marathon and Carmel High School Television, just to name a few things.”

Of all things, Blake is probably best known for his ceramics work, a skill he developed at Carmel High School — and one that led to his recent founding of Blake’s Smiles, a nonprofit that raises awareness and funds for groups that support autism causes.

charities by selling and auctioning his ceramic pieces, discovered his artistic gift after taking a ceramics class at Carmel High School, where he graduated in 2017.

“We reluctantly signed him up thinking he might not make it past his first day,” Steve Dauby said. “Four years later, with the help of his special aides and patient art teacher Ms. (Sarah) Wolff, he has made incredible clay pieces and has been privileged to have several of his pieces exhibited in annual art fairs.”

Buoyed by Blake’s affinity for ceramics, his parents, Steve and Barbara, set up a studio for him in the basement of the family home. There, he creates everything from vessel vases to pots to Sgraffito drape molds to, of course, smiles. “(I) took an art class in high school and made some cool stuff,” Blake said. “(I enjoy) shaping stuff, bowls and cups, on the wheel.”

Besides creating ceramic art, Blake also paints, plays guitar, violin and piano and sings the national anthem at CHS basketball and lacrosse games and at autism events. He also works 12 to 15 hours per week at Walgreens on Michigan Road and dedicates time to establishing Blake’s Smiles, which derives its name from his early childhood habit of asking people who weren’t smiling the same question: “Is it fun?”

a visual learner and struggled socially,” Steve said. “He would famously ask anyone he would see without a smile on their face, ‘Is it fun?’ Most people had no clue what or why he was asking this, but it was his way to calm himself that everything was OK if people did not have a smile on their face.”

On Aug. 3, Blake will participate in the DOZ Charitable Foundation’s outreach program, which in the past five years has donated more than $100,000 to local charities. Dauby O’Connor & Zaleski is an accounting firm in Carmel, where Steve Dauby is a partner.

During the program, part of a DOZ recruiting event for accounting students, Blake will speak about and share his art pieces. Everyone will literally leave with a smile.

“The students will actually go home with one that Blake has already made,” said Nicole Wright, assistant controller for DOZ. “They can take them back with them and share the smiles.”

Dealing with sensory issues Diagnosed with autism as a young child, Blake Dauby — and his family — endured many of the trials and tribulations associated with the disorder.

“Like most kids on the autism spectrum, growing up Blake had numerous sensory issues,” said Steve Dauby, Blake’s father. “Many of these issues can be crippling and alter not only the child but loved ones and care givers. Most refer to the child as being on sensory overload.

One of Blake’s many sensory issues was smell and taste. He would not allow his hands, face or lips to touch anything with an odor, different smell or wasn’t clear in appearance.”

In time, Blake became involved in multiple activities, including music, clubs, student government and art. He looks forward to a future that includes his job at Walgreens, making and editing music videos, overseeing his nonprofit Blake’s Smiles and refining his art.

Oh, and one other thing.

“Having fun,” said Blake, who has three sisters Stephanie, Amanda and Samantha, and a brother, Matt. His mother is Barbara Dauby.

The winner’s art will be incorporated into the poster, which will be for sale at the CCA Gallery Sept. 1. The gallery started in Broad Ripple, moved to Zionsville in 2002 and to Carmel in 2015.

The goal was to better utilize all the space in the basement to create a comfortable area for the family to unwind and relax.

1. The first major change came from finishing the entire basement and dividing it into several rooms – a living space, a bedroom and a home gym.

2. Additionally, new luxury vinyl tile flooring was added to the space. This is a perfect flooring option for any basement because of its durability.

3. A wet bar was created in the living space, making it a great area to entertain and host guests.

4. Also, a projector and projection screen were added in the living space, creating a comfortable home theater.

5. A large barn door was added dividing the living space from the home gym, making both rooms feel more open while also adding a decorative element.

Background Info: This early 2000s home in the Aberdeen neighborhood of West Carmel belongs to a young family. Overall, the home functioned perfectly for the family but lacked a recreational space for the homeowners and their children to workout, watch movies and entertain guests.

Before problems The original basement was only partially finished, so there was plenty of square footage that was not being used. The finished side of the basement lacked design elements that would make it a more comfortable and functional space for the entire family.
