Soccer club alleges Lawrence rival lured players away

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Youth Soccer Association recently filed the second of sports two lawsuits in Boone County Superior Court against two former coaches and a rival soccer club in Lawrence.

The suit, filed in January, alleges before McKinley Jones was terminated for cause, he performed soccer services for FC Pride, a Lawrence-based soccer organization. The suit alleges that he told ZYSA players and their parents he would be resigning and leaving for FC Pride and then induced ZYSA players and their parents to follow him to FC Pride. That breached his agreement with ZYSA, according to the suit. Jones had been ZYSA assistant director of coaching for girls.

ZYSA is seeking an award of damages for the alleged violations of the contract Jones signed, which included a non-compete portion for six months after leaving.

A similar lawsuit was filed in June against FC Pride, Inc., and Mike Beckner, a former ZYSA coach and board member.

Beckner resigned in June 2016, one month

before Jones was terminated.

The suit alleges Beckner conspired with Jones to modify Beckner’s contract with ZYSA, to the detriment of ZYSA, and didn’t disclose the contract changes to the organization until after Beckner’s departure It alleges Beckner also told players and parents he would be resigning from ZYSA and joining FC Pride. The suit alleges that after leaving, Beckner continued to improperly mention, suggest or encourage players’ parents to leave ZYSA programs and join FC Pride programs.

“ZYSA does not take litigation lightly,” ZYSA’s attorney Steve Runyan said in an email response to Current. “Before filing suit, ZYSA tried to resolve the dispute directly with the defendants and then with the aid of Indiana Soccer. Unable to resolve the dispute after more than a

year of attempting to do so, ZYSA filed suit to protect its interests, as we believe our club members would expect. Further, ZYSA has actively worked to address the issues, including influencing Indiana Soccer and its membership to change Indiana Soccer policy to prevent future incidents of this nature (prohibitive contact by coaches relocation).”

An Indiana Soccer fine of $2,000 and loss of coaching privileges for up to five years is now in effect to deter prohibitive contact.

Runyan said the matter was taken with careful consideration of the players impacted by the defendants’ actions.

“ZYSA could have requested an injunction from the (Superior) Court, prohibiting Mr. Jones and Mr. Beckner from coaching, but chose not to do so to minimize the impact on then-current players,” Runyan said. “But

protecting the players does not include allowing those named to violate their obligations. We believe the court will ultimately uphold ZYSA’s rights, and we have proceeded in a way that focuses this case on the actions of the adults involved without impacting the children.”

Runyan said ZYSA has asked the court to determine the amount ZYSA is owed.

Jones said he had no comment at this time.

FC Pride responded on its website to the lawsuit.

“FC Pride is deeply disappointed by the actions taken by ZYSA and its board. Such actions are entirely contrary to the fundamental missions of each organization to serve and develop the youths of our communities through soccer. While the ZYSA has decided to spend its members’ fees to pursue baseless allegations, FC Pride remains committed to its mission to serve the community and provide developmentally appropriate environments for all levels of players. FC Pride will vigorously defend itself and its coaches while, at the same time, continue to focus on being the premier youth soccer organization in Central Indiana.”

Private investigator talks ID theft, ways to prevent becoming a victim

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Steve Carman said if a criminal skilled in stealing identities wants your identity, he or she can do so easily.

Often, people take precautions to avoid becoming a victim by hiding their birth certificate and not giving out their Social Security number, but according to Carman, one of the easiest ways a criminal can steal an identity is through the vehicle identification number listed in plain sight on a vehicle’s dashboard.

“Really, anybody with any type of fluency in theft will be able to use that to get the car’s title or other information about you,” said Carman, a Fishers resident who owns SIU Resource Group, a private investigation company. “They never really find a birth certificate and think, ‘I’m in business.’ What the effective ones do is they will start to build pieces of information. So, they know they won’t get that birth certificate, but what they do is try and see if they can get the VIN number off your car, and most people never have that covered.”

Carman said 90 to 95 percent of identity thieves are what Carman calls “convenience thieves,” and only a small group are actually professionals.

“Those folks can get your information and there’s nothing you can do about it,” Carman said. “The good thing is, it’s such a small group.”

Carman previously worked with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office before changing his career to insurance on the private side.

SIU Resource Group launched a few years ago.

When someone’s identity is stolen, he

collects information and presents it to police. He tries to make it as easy as possible to prosecute the crime.

When an identity is stolen, Carman said the recovery process is extremely difficult.

It involves filing a police report and can even result in getting sued in small claims court. He said it is much easier to prevent ID theft than it is to recover losses from it.

Carman said the best strategy is to freeze credit with the three main credit agencies, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.

Prior to making a big purchase, such as a car, the buyer will have to call and unfreeze the credit for 24 hours.

“Go on the proactive to get those alarm systems up so you know when someone’s trying to do it,” he said.

Driver files complaint following pothole damage

When Steven Jorro’s wife hit a pothole in Fishers with her car while roads returning from the gym, Jorro thought the solution would be as simple as contacting the city, filing a claim for the damage and receiving the funds. However, it didn’t work out that way.

The incident occurred in January after dark when the car hit the pothole on Cumberland Road just north of 126th Street.

“It destroyed the driver’s side front tire and the suspension needed aligning,” Jorro said. “I contacted the city and (they) responded respectfully and thoughtfully and apologized for the damage, and then explained the process of making a claim.”

The process, according to the city, is as follows: “A Notice of Tort Claim must be filed with the City of Fishers within 180 days of the incident. The city then has 90 days to review the Notice and any supporting doc-

uments and respond with an approval or denial of the claim. If the city doesn’t reply within 90 days, the claim has been denied.

Jorro said he filed the claim within the 180 days. After sending the claim to Selective, the city’s insurance agency, Jorro received what he deemed an unsatisfactory reply. “(The insurance adjuster) said he did a thorough investigation, and there’s no evidence (of the pothole) being reported prior to my letter,” Jorro said. “Apparently, the city or state, or whoever is in charge of the roads, won’t pay you unless (the pothole) has been reported beforehand. I was disappointed because I knew there was a great big pothole out there.”

Jorro said damages totaled $307.13. The Carmel resident said a similar incident occurred during the winter when a Carmel snowplow damaged his mailbox. Jorro reported the incident to the City of Carmel and the city immediately replaced his mailbox.

Jorro is still working with city staff to resolve the issue.

Lawrence buys new street sweeper

Making streets cleaner has been identified as a top priority by the City of Lawrence, and a new street sweeper for its Dept. of Public Works is helping with the job. The city recently purchased a new Tymco 500x High Dump Street Sweeper. “Routine street sweeping has many more benefits than just aesthetics,” Mayor Steve Collier stated. “This essential city service will keep storm drains clear, improve air quality and lessen the opportunity for vehicle collisions.” Collier said the city also plans to purchase a new Madvac, a drivable litter vacuum with a robotic arm, to better equip DPW crews and to keep arterial and residential thoroughfares clean. COMMUNITY • The intersection at 113th Street and Florida Road is closed to allow for the realignment and construction of a new roundabout. The closure began July 16 and will last 90 days.

• Brooks School Road is closed between Desert Glen Drive and Club Point Drive. The closure began July 5 and will last 90 days. Brooks School Road also is closed between 126th Street and 136th Street to construct a sidewalk to the east of the bridge over I-69.

The road will reopen in early August.

• 136th Street is now open between Southeastern Parkway and Prairie Baptist Road. Southeastern Parkway has closed between 136th Street and Isle of Man Way to complete a roundabout. The closure began July 10 and will last 30 days. For detours, traffic should travel up Prairie Baptist Road to 136th Street.

• 106th Street is closed from Eller Road to Allisonville Road and from Allisonville Road to Hague Road for the 106th Street Infrastructure Project. Closures will also take place from Hague Road to the Crosspoint Boulevard/Lantern Road roundabout.

Work will be complete this fall. Eller Road is closed south of White Horse Lane for concrete work associated with the 106th Street Infrastructure Project and should reopen this fall.

• Traffic has been shifted to the east to allow for widening on the west side along Allisonville Road from 126th Street to 131st Street. Restrictions will be in place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and flaggers will be on site directing traffic. All southbound left turns from onto 126th Street from Allisonville Road are prohibited. The work will be complete by winter.

• Road closures will take place from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays on the east side of Municipal Drive for the farmers market.

Parking is available in The Depot and The Switch garages. On Tuesday and Friday evenings, concerts are held on the Central Green, and Municipal Drive will be closed in front of city hall beginning at noon those days. At the same time, North Street and Municipal Drive are right-turn-only, and Fishers Center and Municipal drives are left-turn-only. Street parking is restricted on Municipal Drive during concert days.

The road will be partially closed, as the roundabout is being built in phases with traffic flowing through it.

• 96th Street is closed at Priority Way for construction of a roundabout. The closure is expected to last until August.

• Construction on a new access ramp from Lowes Way to Keystone Parkway is under way. Phase one of the project is expected to be complete in October 2019.

• 116th Street is closed between Towne and Spring Mill roads for replacement of a bridge east of Clay Center Road and a culvert over Williams Creek, just west of Ditch Road. The road is expected to reopen in August.

• Phase 2 of the 146th Street construction project is under way between Ditch and Towne roads. A frontage road will be available to access homes and businesses.

Phase 2 is expected to be complete this summer.

• West 96th Street is closed west of Ditch Road for a storm water culvert project. The road is expected to reopen

by Oct. 1.

• North Range Line Road, from 136th Street to U.S. 31 is expected to close on or after Aug. 3 for construction. The closure is planned until early 2019.

An expansion of Cherry Creek Boulevard is anticipated to begin in July and be complete before the end of the year.

• 241st Street between Overdorf Road and Fall Road in White River Township was scheduled to be closed on or after July 9 for the replacement of a small structure.

The closure will last 120 days, scheduled to open Nov. 7.

Evolution of policing Hofmann details law enforcement in Lawrence during state of police address

He was hired when Lawrence Mayor Steve Collier took office.

On July 12, Hofmann addressed members of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce at its monthly Breakfast Before Hours event at Westminster Village North.

“LPD was established in 1929. Next year is our 90th year in existence. As you can imagine, back then it was probably just one guy who got up and went out looking for bootleg liquor,” Hofmann said. “But we’ve obviously evolved as a police department and as a city.”

Hofmann said through the years the department has grown with the city, but in many ways has been “squirreled away” in threadbare facilities.

“Whether it’s a two-bedroom house on McCoy Street, which was basically an abandoned house that was turned into a police station, then they were in a township trustee’s office for awhile in a basement that just flooded all the time,” Hofmann said.

Today, the Lawrence Police Dept. is housed in the city’s government center at

9001 E. 59th St., where it has been for more than eight years.

“We’ve never had a place that was designed to be set up to house a law enforcement organization, so when Mayor Collier was elected, (for) some of his team, (a new building) had been in the back of their mind,” Hofmann said. “Within four years, they wanted to at least explore the idea of getting a new station up and running.”

In November 2017, the city announced its proposal for a new police station and 911 communications center on a 4-acre site at 5140 Post Rd., the former location of the abandoned Snafu Saloon.

Prior to the announcement, the city commissioned a feasibility study with Carmelbased RQAW. “They gave us a report that said, ‘Here’s what you have, and it’s woefully inadequate by national standards. Here’s what you need, and here’s what we will project you need over the next 20 years,’” Hofmann said. “Why do we have a prisoner-holding bench right next to a door? And why are we processing heroin, fentanyl, cocaine and marijuana and counting cash right next to where an officer is having his lunch? This is historic, not only because it’s the first police station, but also because it gives our department an identity.

“It will be two stories, on a basement,

37,000 square feet. It’s so funny, we talk about this $12.9 million facility, and what are (officiers) excited about? They get lockers, a place to hang their uniform or have a backup uniform.”

A property room with ventilation is another feature.

“For example, our current property room is in our basement, and the heating and air conditioning is all tied in with the rest of the building,” Hofmann said. “So, last year we had this huge marijuana bust and brought in these huge trash bags full of weed. They brought it in, weighed it, labeled it and put it in the property room.

That smell of raw marijuana permeated the entire building.”

In addition, Hofmann mentioned the need for the increased security of a new station.

“In Marion County, there have been four recent cases where police stations have been shot up,” Hofmann said. “That stuff does happen here, and that’s what’s on my mind when I think about where our officers congregate.”

The Lawrence Common Council approved the proposal for the new station Feb. 5. Construction began July 11 after a groundbreaking ceremony. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of summer 2019.

59 OFFICERS “We’re at 59 officers right now, but we’re budgeted at 62,” Lawrence Police Chief David Hofmann said. “We’re hiring a bunch of officers because we’ve had several retirements this year and three vacancies. So, we’re hiring between six and eight officers on July 30.”

30 RESERVE OFFICERS “In addition to 62 full-time guys, we have 30 reserve officers,” Hofmann said. “They do all the same kind of police work that the full-time guys do, they just don’t get pad for it. They do 32 hours a month, get a take-home car and get to come in and experience law enforcement and give back to the community.”

5 CIVILIANS AND 7 CHAPLAINS “Police chaplains get called out for all kinds of things, death notifications, fatal crashes, injured officers, anything where there’s an emotional support response need,” Hofmann said.

15 OPERATORS “We have 15 911 operators, which is a whole other world of criminal justice and public safety,” Hofmann said.

“Their phones ring about 100,000 times a year when someone calls for police, fire, EMS, and a lot of calls that are just insane.”

30 EXPLORERS “Our Explorers are like cadets,” Hofmann said. “They’re career-oriented kids (age 14 to 21) that are learning about law enforcements with the hope that someday in their future they can get into policing. It’s sort of a recruiting tool for us. There are actually a lot of LPD officers right now that started off as Explorers. We have the largest Explorer program in the state of Indiana.”

Long lines and minor indignities have become a part of the national ethos in the wake of countless incidences of terrorism here and abroad. We queue for sporting events, airplanes and government buildings. For the most part, the transaction is handled comfortably with as little inconvenience as possible. Still, some express frustration at the bureaucracy and expense required to administer. It seems the only thing more troubling than airport security may be airport insecurity. Our fear leads us to invest tremendously in our protection.

In some primordial fashion, it has kept us alive. We, the successful progenitors of humanity, have learned to approach risk with utmost caution. Still, if possessed by anxiety of the perils of the world around us, do we give up too much? If we fear growth, we are protected from its jeopardies but stunted in our development. Do our personal insecurities secretly holding us back?

Secure or insecure, no one succeeds lifelong without continuing maturity and improvement. Does framing our challenges as a matter of security or insecurity distract us from the important objectives at hand? At this point, is how we feel about our insecurities as important as meeting our best capacity? Is it like our complaining about how insecure we are in our snug, skinny suit rather than spending the energy counting calories and planning the next day’s meals? Sure, we have come to rely on natural tendencies toward insecurity to keep us safe. But, do we hide behind them?

Agriculture is an essential part of the fabric that defines Indiana.

Right now, Hoosier farmers and our communities are navigating significant challenges dealing with turmoil on the international marketplace, uncertainty in federal policies like the RFS and low commodity prices that in many cases are below the cost of production.

Importantly, the Senate recently passed a farm bill that I helped write, which would provide Hoosier farmers with some desperately needed stability. I’m proud of the Hoosier input and bipartisan work that went into getting it passed.

Combatting the opioid epidemic in rural communities remains a priority for me, and this bill includes three of my bipartisan provisions that would combat the opioid epidemic by targeting telemedicine and community facility investments for substance abuse treatment and by investing in prevention and education programs.

This bill would eliminate potential disincentives for voluntary conservation practices like cover crops and would support soil health improvement programs.

As Hoosier farmers work to sell their

products around the world, the bill would increase export opportunities for Hoosier farmers through two export promotion programs: the Foreign Market Development Program and the Market Assistance Program.

I also have worked to ensure full planting flexibility for farmers who want to plant fruits and vegetables, which ensures farmers can diversify their farms without worrying about losing access to commodity-support programs in the future.

As we work to fight hunger, this farm bill would strengthen the oversight of the SNAP, while preserving the ability to fight food insecurity.

Now that the Senate has passed this bipartisan farm bill, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House of Representatives to reconcile differences so that we can quickly get this to President Trump’s desk. Farmers and rural communities across our state deserve the certainty of a bipartisan, five-year farm bill, and I am confident that, working together, we can get it done.

Six family members need to be at 27 places throughout the day. There are only three cars, one of which has a brohumor ken fuel gauge and no AC. The youngest, who cannot legally drive, and the second son are scheduled to work at noon. The older daughter, who’s had her license for all five days and is highly questionable in even a smidgeon of traffic, has color guard at 10 a.m. but will need lunch at 1:30 p.m. The first born, owner of the aforementioned janky car and part-time salesman for Cutco, has two appointments with potential knife-buying customers and “thinks” he’s out of gas. The father, whose office is the farthest away, prefers to retain transportation. The mother’s schedule is flexible, but if she’s required to negotiate too many roundabouts in high heat she’ll experience acute nausea (the struggle is real!).

The question is, how does this family survive the summer while staying fully employed and out of therapy?

Such is my daily logistical nightmare. Every morning I consult my calendar and try to determine the best strategy for using our limited vehicular resources. Sometimes, we can rely on grandparents or friends to help, but usually it’s me orchestrating some major mommy magic to get everyone to and from work/practice on time and without sibling infighting.

Cycles of fear

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie When our new washer and dryer arrived last week, I watched as the two behemoths were installed by two humor other behemoths. “Don’t I get instructions?” I asked before they left. I was handed a 94-page manual.

In four languages.

Our laundry room resembles the cockpit of a 747. Between the two machines there are more than three dozen buttons. They light up when touched and emit a series of short, annoying beeps, as if trying to communicate with me like in the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

Our old washer had two settings. Going from a normal cycle to a gentle cycle is not something a man does lightly, so I never messed with that. My wife sometimes ventured there, but for the most part, the Wolfsies put a normal spin on things.

These machines look so imposing, we were afraid to go into the room. We walked back and forth in front of the door for several days, avoiding the inevitable. Things were piling up outside and I knew we couldn’t hold out indefinitely. But I didn’t want to be first — nor did Mary Ellen.

I scanned the buttons and eyed the options like silk, quick wash and wool. One setting said hand washables, but I’m not going to stick my mitts in there while that monster is turning. The setting for bulky items scares the cat half to death. One setting says sanitize, which I had thought was a given for every cycle.

The dryer has a setting called super-hot, which I told my wife was especially for her.

If we had been in a fancy restaurant with a glass of wine, that might have gone over well, but we were standing in a room kneedeep in dirty sheets and pillowcases.

My favorite button is the one that adjusts the volume of the other buttons, so if you are down in the basement you can hear the machine upstairs alerting you that your clothes are done. I’m amazed Mary Ellen and I ever managed without this feature.

I have to go now. My socks are calling.

No. 1 reason people leave jobs isn’t pay

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The perception is most people leave their job for better pay. onezone It’s actually reason No. 5, according to Danny Nelms, who serves as the Work Institute president.

“Less than 8 percent actually identified pay as the root cause of why they left,” said Nelms, whose company is based in Franklin, Tenn. “The truth is people don’t typically leave their job for money. I’m going to tell you why we think it’s money, it’s, ‘You don’t pay me enough to put up with (variety of reasons).’ That why we think it’s people leave for money, because in the absence of the other things, whether it be career development or having a poor manager. It’s also because of the way we don’t conduct an exit interview the way we should. We don’t get to the root.”

Nelms addressed the OneZone luncheon July 11 at the Forum Conference & Events Center in Fishers on ways businesses can retain employees.

Ahead of pay were career development, work-life balance, management behavior and well-being.

“About 38 million employees left their jobs

voluntarily last year,” Nelms said. “We’re actually predicting one in four are going to leave their job voluntarily this year.”

Nelms said 34,000 people who voluntarily left jobs in 2017 were interviewed, allowing his business to publish a 2018 Retention Report.

Nelms said there are more open jobs than there are unemployed workers.

“We have to be listening to what our employees want,” Nelms said. “From our perspective, we have to find why employees are leaving our company.”

Nelms said when an exit interview is conducted two to four weeks after leaving, 40 to 60 percent of the reasons will change.

“So, two weeks later we are going to get real information,” he said.

Nelms said it helps if a third party or outside consulting conducts the exit interview.

Instead of a drop-down box with 10 to 15 reasons, Nelms said his company’s research shows there are 50 distinctly different reasons for leaving, so it’s important to ask why to determine a reason or rating.

Most employees want to grow in their jobs.

“They want to learn,” Nelms said. “They want somebody to pay attention to them.

They want to improve in how they are doing things.”

Employees want to work a reasonable schedule.

“We used to say people will walk down the street for $1 or 50 cents more an hour,” Nelms said. “Now, they are actually walking down the street for a different schedule.”

The issue with managers isn’t a competency issue but a professionalism one, Nelms said.

“It’s how we are interacting with our employees,” he said. “You think with years of training and leadership, we’d figure out it actually matters how we treat employees and how we interact. Thirty-five percent said their manager was unprofessional. We still get reports of people being yelled at, being corrected in front of their peers. But we still see it go on. Employees are not going to tolerate a bad manager.”

As far as well-being, Nelms said employees want flexibility in taking care of their family, whether it be a sick child or elderly parent.

“Most of the issues are short-term issues,” Nelms said. “We find employers have no flexibility of working with that individual.”

CHS graduate Park’s movie to make debut in Indy Shorts Festival

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Justin Park is hoping his success will inspire other high school filmmakers.

The 2018 Carmel High School film graduate has directed a narrative short film, “You’ve Been On My Mind,” that will be screened during the Indy Shorts International Film Festival, set for July 26 to 29 at the Newfields at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The event is presented by the Heartland Film Festival.

“It’s sort of in that style of musical from the 1960s,” Park said. “One of the most unique things about the film is not only is the cast and crew from the high school, we also had the music composed and produced by high school students.”

The movie is just under 8 minutes.

Emma Hedrick, another 2018 CHS graduate, composed the title track, “You’ve Been On My Mind.”

“The film itself has been a longer project. It’s been over a year,” Hedrick said.

“Originally, when Justin asked me to compose for the film, I wrote something and that didn’t take very long. I worked on it for an hour or so in study hall time. Then I worked with it in a small jazz band time arrangement. We recorded it and I forgot about it. Justin was filming additional scenes, so I sent him a voice memo with lyrics I wrote to go along with it, and he really liked the lyrics. So, we had to re-record with the lyrics and did a smaller combo.

The original one was mostly horns playing the melody.”

Hedrick is headed to the University of Miami to study vocal jazz performance.

Park, whose film “Kara Deady: The Pole Vaulter” was the Indiana Documentary winner in the High School Film Competition at Heartland in 2017, is going to study film at New York University this fall.

“This is the first time we’re showing it to the general public, and we hope they enjoy watching it and they can appreciate all of our hard work,” Park said. “I hope our film can inspire other high school filmmakers that they can do bigger projects.

Just because they are a high school student doesn’t mean we have to do smaller shows. We put together a team of people of different backgrounds and interests and we’re all excelling in our fields. We’ve managed to come together as a team and complete this project.”

The film will be shown at 4:45 p.m. July 27 and 12 p.m. July 28 at DeBoest Lecture Hall.

‘Grateful’ set for film festival Park was director of photography for another film, “Grateful.”

“It wasn’t easy to balance both things together,” Park said.

“Grateful” is a 17-minute documentary, which chronicles the story of Jenni Berebitsky, who is battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Berebitsky, 42, was diagnosed nine years ago in March of 2009. At the time, she was told by a doctor she had 18 to 24 months to live.

Amy Pauszek, whose Where’s Amy column appears in Current editions, is one of

the executive producers and co-producer for the 17-minute documentary.

“Her story will warm your heart while teaching us to live an engaging, productive and meaningful life,” Pauszek said.

Pauszek met filmmaker and co-producer Paul Nethercott last year at the Heartland Film Festival, where they both had films.

“We had connected as filmmakers and shared a common interest of making films that will make a difference,” Pauszek said.

Nethercott contacted Pauszek after the festival in late November 2017 and told her he was planning on directing a new documentary short on Berebitsky.

“After we met a few times and having known Jenni through the Heartland Truly Moving Jury Committee, I knew this was the next short I had to produce,” Pauszek said.

Wray, a 13-year-old Carmel resident, will appear in a lead role as Mary Lennox in Summer Stock Stage’s “The Secret Garden” from July 25 to 29 at Park Tudor High School.

“I’m very excited to take on this role,” Wray said. “This is my first summer doing Summer Stock Stage as well as my first role having a British accent.”

She is taking lessons to learn the accent via FaceTime from Jennifer White in Australia.

Also appearing in the show from Carmel are Michael Krauter as Fakir, Herron High School, and Olivia Wise, ensemble, The Orchard School.

Cast clicks in ‘Guys and Dolls’

“I love the show. What I theater specifically love about our cast is that it doesn’t matter what part we are, what school we come from, what our personality is, we’ve already connected strongly, which is really helpful for the characters in our show to connect for the story to come to life,” Smiler said.

Civic Theatre’s Young Artists Program will present the classic musical from July 26 to 29 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The performances will be 7 p.m. July 26, 27, 28 and 2 p.m. July 29.

Smiler, who will be a Carmel High School sophomore in August, portrays Martha in the mission band. Melody Barrows, who will be a Westfield High School senior, performs as mission band member Agatha.

“It is challenging to keep from being boring because the mission band has to be very stern and proper most of the time,” Barrows said. “I like playing this character because it allows me to stretch my acting abilities.”

ATI seeks to increase fan base

However, ATI agreed to present a show in Indianapolis when operators of the District Theatre asked ATI to present the first show at the newly renovated Indianapolis theater on 627 Massachusetts Ave., formerly Theatre on the Square.

“We are big on this regionalization of the arts,” ATI Executive Director Jim Reilly said.

“We’re are trying to take down the barrier at 96th Street. About 10 percent of our subscribers come from Marion County.”

ATI co-founders Judy Fitzgerald, Don Farrell and Cynthia Collins appear along with Logan Moore in “Forbidden Broadway,” which opened July 5. The musical comedy has five more performances before its run concludes July 29.

Durbin wins national dance titles

Durbin, who lives competition in the Geist section of Fishers, captured first place for Junior Level 3 Soloist in the 12-and-under division in the Rising Star Talent Competition in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., June 26-27. Junior Level 3 is the most advanced level. Durbin, 11, won for “The Lord’s Prayer” (lyrical dance) and “Hallelujah” (contemporary dance). She then qualified to compete in that evening’s Best of the Best competition.

Because she had scored the same score for both solos she was allowed to choose her dance, and she chose to perform “The Lord’s Prayer.” Her performance earned Durbin the 12-and-under Rising Star Award.

“I feel like I made all of my corrections,” said Durbin, adding her success will give her confidence going forward.

Durbin, who will be entering sixth grade at Holy Cross Lutheran School in Indianapolis, said she has definitely made improvement during the past year, especially with technique.

Durbin, who has been dancing for 8 1/2 years, is a dancer from Greenfield’s Elite Performing Arts Academy, owned by Eric and Erin Benson. Erin is Caroline’s primary teacher and choreographer at the academy. Mia Miller, a Mount Vernon High School student, serves as Durbin’s student teacher.

Durbin credits the help she received this past year for her success.

“Mia won the Rising Star award several years ago and she is mentor to Caroline,” said her mother, Holly Durbin. “Everybody goes out of their way to help out. Caroline dances for several hours every day after school. The girls work hard and they love it.”

Cuba’s classic cars

Commentary by Don Knebel Many visitors to Cuba take at least one ride in the island’s time-defying vintage automobiles. Appearances can be travel deceiving.

During the 1950s, wealthy Cubans and American expatriates imported thousands of automobiles made by Chrysler, Ford and General Motors. Reflecting the styles and tastes of the time, most of them featured lots of chrome and brightly colored, often two-tone, paint jobs. When Fidel Castro took control of Cuba in 1959, he barred importation of automobiles from the United States and other non-communist countries as symbols of capitalist excess. The American embargo then precluded the sale of spare parts to Cuba.

As the miles piled up on the now irreplaceable vehicles, necessity gave birth to hundreds of Cuban inventors. Mechanics kept cars running hundreds of thousands of miles beyond their expected lifespans by substituting engines from wrecked and abandoned Russian cars for the Detroit-made V-8s and fabricating parts in their garages. In the meantime, some of the automobiles, such as

the 1955 to 1957 Chevrolet Bel Airs, had become classics in the United States.

When Americans began visiting Cuba in larger numbers during the Obama administration, they found automobiles on the streets they could see only in car shows back home.

When the Cuban government began allowing its citizens to operate independently in the tourist economy, owners of 60-year-old American cars, passed down from their parents and grandparents, found visitors willing to pay $30 an hour just to ride in them, a sum more than the daily wage of the average Cuban. Once inside, passengers often realize that new paint can make old automobiles appear showroom new from the outside, but paint can’t cover ripped upholstery and replace headliners. For most visitors, such concerns are quibbles. More important is that they have ridden and been photographed in icons of mid-20th-century America.
