Hageman Group proposes offices in tech district

At its June 18 meeting, the Fishers City Council heard an introdevelopment duction for a new office building, HG Technology, to be built as a Tech Park gateway building by Hageman Group in partnership with the City of Fishers.

The building will be a Class-A, multi-story office building at 8939 Technology Way and will encompass 31,000 square feet. The company plans to invest $8.5 million.

Economic Director Brandon Dickinson presented the project to the council. He said the project will serve as a catalyst for more development.

“This would add needed office space to our downtown office inventory,” he said. “We can’t build it fast enough for the demand we have

for people that want to locate their business and talented workforce to downtown.”

The company has 30 months to pre-lease to tenants. If it succeeds, the city will provide $2 million in bond proceeds and $50,000 for utility allowance and waive impact fees to offset development costs. If the company sells the building within its first five years, the profit will be shared with the city.

“I think that’s something that’s new that we think is appropriate,” Dickinson said. “If we are able to put public dollars into a project and it’s successful, the city should be able to be entitled to a share of the fruits of that labor.”

The building backs up to the Nickel Plate Trail and is across from Meyer Najem Construction on Lantern Road.

growing companies to join the entrepreneurial economy here in our city,” Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness stated in a press release.

The council unanimously passed the economic development deal between Hageman Group and the City of Fishers.

Sheriff’s office now using CrimeReports news@currentnoblesville.com Announced last week, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Ofpublic safety fice is now using a tool to keep the public informed of crime activity in the county.

After several months of planning and development, the sheriff’s department has begun a partnership with CrimeReports. com, an interactive mapping system that allows the public to see law enforcement calls. Mapped incidents specific to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office can be found at crimereports.com/agency/HamiltonCoIN, or on the CrimeReports app.

“While we have provided our calls for service in list form on our website for years, CrimeReports offers the public a more interactive way to view the information,” Sheriff Mark Bowen said. “Using the filter feature, viewers can narrow down a search or broaden it to include multiple agencies, ranges of dates and incident types across the county.”

Cynthiana: Remembering the first Geist Community Commentary by David Heighway The area around Fishers and Geist is the site of some of the newest housing in Hamilton County, but highlights it was actually settled very early. A town in Fall in history Creek Township in one of the few communities listed on the earliest maps. Although it apparently only lasted for two years, the name has stuck around.

The town was Cynthiana, and it can be tough to track because it was later spelled “Cynthianna”, “Cynthianne” and “Cyntheanne.” There are towns of the same name in Posey County and in Kentucky. The town in Hamilton County was just south of Fall Creek, near the county border at the crossing of Southeastern Parkway and Connecticut Avenue. Cyntheanne Road ends 1 1/2 miles to the northwest. The land originally was purchased from the government by Benjamin Blythe in February 1832.

Joseph G. Roberts has done a great deal of work on long-disappeared Hamilton County towns. When he was asked about Cyntheanne in the 1970s, he said it was platted and named by Isom Garrett in 1834.

It had 80 lots in two additions, all of which were sold. Garrett had arrived in the county in 1827 and was on the 1830 census, but had moved to Vigo County by 1840.

The first official notice of the town was an ending. A bill was passed by the Indiana State Legislature in January 1836 to “vacate” the town. The town was still marked on maps in 1840, 1843, 1853 and 1854, but not after that. The different mapmakers weren’t quite sure where it was, with some placing it south of Fall Creek and some placing it north.

The Christian Church has an interesting statement about the town on its website.

It says the community was founded by the Whetsel family and named for their daugh-

ter. Theodore and Elzina Whetsel did have a daughter named Cynthia; however, the family did not arrive in the county until 1850.

The Whetsels may have created a revival of the community. The website mentions that it had a schoolhouse, a glass factory and a blacksmith shop, remains of which can still be found today.

The people defined the community. Although it never had a post office, people claimed it as an address. In 1850, a resident wrote a letter to the State Sentinel newspaper voicing his support for the Temperance movement. The community was listed in an 1859 shipper’s guide; however, the only real focus was the Christian Church, which was organized in 1886, with the present building being constructed in 1903.

By 1890, references to “Cynthianna” started appearing in the newspapers. The first appearance of “Cynthianne” was when the Cynthianne Telephone Company was incorporated in 1904. In the 1915 State Tax Commissioner’s report, the company was listed as “Cynthiana.” A 1916 report on the Christian Church used “Cynthianne,” which also was the spelling used in the 1916 and 1917 Tax Commissioner’s reports. The Cynthianne Telephone Company had 34 miles of telephone line in 1917.

The “Cyntheanne” spelling is first seen in a 1916 notice about a revival at the church.

This spelling has alternated with “Cynthianne” up to the present day. The last known use of the “Cynthiana” spelling was in a 1918 report on Christian Church philanthropy. When major planning of Geist Reservoir began in the 1920s, the area began to change and the demographics are very different today.

Road trip rankings – Personal finance website WalletHub has released 2018’s Best and Worst States for Summer Road Trips. Indiana ranked among the worst states, placing 45th overall. Rankings were based on travel costs, crime and motor accident rates and access to recreational activities. Wyoming topped the list, primarily because of its low travel costs.

A city celebration

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Mayor Scott Fadness isn’t quite sure what the turnout will be for the inaugural Spark!Fishers, the city’s new Fourth of July celebration scheduled for June 30.

What he does know is the event is centered in downtown Fishers and will showcase the city’s culinary and entrepreneurial vibes.

When the city created a committee that reviewed which nonprofits should receive grants, it decided not to invest in the previous Fishers Freedom Festival celebration. That event received $85,000 from the city and in-kind services. Fadness said the goal for Spark!Fishers is to be at that price point or less.

“At some point, Fishers Freedom Festival decided that without that continued level of funding, they didn’t have a desire to continue to move forward with the festival as we knew it,” Fadness said.

“When that discussion occurred, we were fortunate enough that the parks department’s focus was on tradition-building and community events, and we made the decision internally that we would move forward with the new festival that still celebrated those things in the past everybody loved, but embraced the things our city was known for.”

Fadness said some features of the original festival will remain, such as the parade and fireworks, but the new Spark!Fishers event will focus on the city’s past, present and future.

“We are changing locations and bringing it downtown,” Fadness said. “It will focus on culinary and the entrepreneurial vibe.”

The event begins with a June 29 concert by Sugar Ray and Ryan Ahlwardt. On June 30, the day kicks off with a 5K run at 8 a.m., followed by an opening ceremony and the street fair at 11 a.m. The parade will follow a full day of street fair activities at 7 p.m., with fireworks scheduled for 10 p.m. A rain date for the parade and fireworks is scheduled for July 1.

Fadness said approximately 80 volunteers from the community have been working on the event.

“It’s at the heart of our city, being able to be around all that,” Fadness said. “We would hope the amphitheater would be done at this time, but weather delays really hampered that. We think this type of act belongs in the heart of the city where all this walkability and restaurants are here.”

During the street fair, live entertainment will be featured throughout the day and many vendors will be on-site. One live band, the Naptown Hepcats, is based in Fishers and will be performing in its home city for the first time.

“We are a Fishers band, and we are super excited to be able to perform at a Fishers event, especially one as big as Spark!Fishers is expected to be,” said Spencer Mitchell, a guitarist and lead vocalist for the band. “We are just absolutely thrilled to be able to do this.”

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com The Fort Ben Farmers Market still is new to the Lawrence comcover story munity, but especially to Mandy Wright-Jarrett.

Wright-Jarrett is this year’s market master and is bringing new events and programming to expand the offerings of the market, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays through September.

Supervising a market, however, isn’t new to Wright-Jarrett. She ran the Kokomo Farmers Market for 4 1/2 years.

Wright-Jarrett was selected by Stevi Stoesz, the executive director of the Indianapolis City Market. Stoesz was brought on board last year by the city as a consultant to get the market off of the ground at the Fort Ben Civic Plaza, 9230 Memorial Park Dr. “Stevi, she recruited me,” Wright-Jarrett said. “I assist with operations for (Indianapolis City Market), and as I built a relationship with her, she told me about this open position.”

The Fort Ben Farmers Market was launched June 1, 2017, after the city’s economic development department and Mayor Steve Collier saw the need for a market in the area, which has been redeveloping since Fort Bennamin Harrison closed in the

mid-1990s.

A Kokomo native, Wright-Jarrett, 39, and her family moved to California for several years before returning to Indiana last summer and settling on the east side of Indianapolis in the Irvington area.

“I just wanted to start developing roots,” she said. “I’ve done this before, and I just love running a market. I freelance doing creative consulting and free-range event planning. I refer to it as free-range event planning because all of the events I plan are pretty quirky and off-the-wall.”

Wright-Jarrett quickly put her touch on the market, including a change in layout so vendors can wrap around the plaza and face the greenspace. In and around the greenspace, there are activities for kids and adults, including Hula Hooping, reading time at a large maple tree, art projects, yard games, live music and more.

“We’re trying to create an experience,” Wright-Jarrett said. “The main focus last year was recruitment of vendors and getting people here. This year, we really wanted to focus on programming.”

there has been a Superhero Day, music and dancing performances, live book readings, yoga classes and more, all at no cost to guests. A free yoga class is offered at the start of each market.

“We’re just hoping people want to come out here and build community,” WrightJarrett said. “It’s important to know your neighbors and support local folks. One of the reasons I signed on to do this market is because there is such diversity in Lawrence.

It’s just another opportunity to bring all of these people together to enjoy something together.”

Presenting to a large assembly of mostly central Indiana business leaders, the young mayor of the recently ordained City of Fishers, Scott Fadness, outlined a vision for his community and that of the larger body of central Indiana. While at once relaxed, even jocular, he is intensely focused on navigating the threats and opportunities with which he is confronted. One is comforted to expect that even if the challenges prove overwhelming, it would not be for any lack of effort, intelligence or intensity on his part.

In examining the population growth, rising real estate values and other affirmations of the positive direction his citizenry enjoys, he admonished the group with his own mantra — namely to invest oneself in “knowing the difference between what you are doing and what’s happening to you.”

Too often, we revel in the success we might encounter in life, claiming that “we own” all that is good and right. We are making it happen. We are “doing” it. Still, as life turns against us and the winds blow blustering cold in our face, we assert all matter of calamity to be “happening” to us. Surely, sometimes we are correct. Yet, how often did we take credit for a rising tide and refuse blame for a sinking ship?

In our own work, home and family, are we holding ourselves to account for what we can hope to affect and deflecting credit (or blame) for that which we cannot? Is the magic in life not whether we own our actions or not but instead knowing when and how to hold ourselves accountable and when to claim a pass? Fadness reminds us to check not only our hubris but also our humility.

We survived! Twenty-three people, seven nights, one beach house. Compared to previous family vacations, this week ranks pretty high. Here’s why. humor For starters, the “littles” are getting older. Three of my nieces were drowning victims waiting to happen last year, but this summer they can all sort of swim. And more importantly, they can truly be threatened with, gulp, “No iPad time!”

True, my youngest sister still has two kiddos in diapers, and they cried a lot. I mean a lot. But their antics were more than offset by copious amounts of alcohol. Wine, beer, rum, vodka, tequila, even a fifth of Jack, were consumed in vast quantities, making the boxes of SPF 70 we went through look like we were wintering in Siberia. And that’s saying something, as most of us are pasty gingers.

There were no severe sunburns, only one fight (the result of an impromptu Dr. Phil session where one of my nieces told her sister she didn’t like her new haircut), and with the exception of another niece projectile vomiting in a rental car on the way to the airport, no illnesses. We enjoyed sandcastlebuilding, Boogie-Boarding, storm-watching, dominoes, Jeopardy, eating, reading, fishing, original performance, and actual, live, faceto-face, conversation.

At the last night’s dinner, we played HighLow, where everyone shares the best and worst parts of the trip. My dad, who had experienced limited beach time because of a twisted ankle, said it best: “I just like being here with all of you.” Me, too.

READER ’ S V I EW Where are students getting guns?

Editor, Living in Fishers but a grandparent of a student at Noblesville West Middle School, I, like many, was first filled with fear for the safety of my grandchild and the other students at the school. That was replaced by shock that this happened in Noblesville, a peaceful place. All of us now know it can happen anywhere!

Of course, it could have been worse if not for a heroic teacher. However, can we always depend on a heroic teacher to stop a shooter? There was a school resource officer at the school as there should be at every school in America today. But that doesn’t seem to be enough.

There were the “thoughts and prayers” of the politicians as in most school and other mass shootings around the nation in the past. That certainly hasn’t prevented more school shootings and mass

murders.

Only one of the political leaders has even supported universal background checks for gun purchases, which 86 percent of Americans support. Where are the rest? What are their solutions? Because we, parents and grandparents, must demand an end to these weekly terrible nightmares that have made students afraid at school.

Most school shootings have been by students. Where are they getting the guns? Among other solutions, we need to harden the criminal and civil penalties for those negligent parents who do not take protective measures, such as putting guns in locked places so they don’t fall into the hands of kids!

As an apology to a friend, I sent him a $30 gift card for a breakfast.

We ate together the next humor week. After we finished, the waiter informed us there was still credit remaining.

“You use it,” Jim said before he left.

“How much credit is left?” I asked the waiter.

“The balance is $971.12. That’s a record here. Second place is $13.78.”

“Wait,” I said, “that’s not right. The card was only for $30.”

The manager came over and confirmed I could use the card’s balance.

“Our mistake,” he said, “and we will honor it.”

I told Mary Ellen, and she demanded that I return the card. I wanted other opinions.

First, I emailed my brother in New York.

“Peter, I bought a $30 gift card but they credited me $1,000 by mistake. What should I do?”

Peter’s response: “About what?”

Then I emailed my editor, Heidi.

“Can you help with a situation. I have a $1,000 gift-card from a local breakfast joint, but I only paid for a $30 card.”

Her response: “First, you need a question mark after ‘situation.’ Second, gift card is not hyphenated. Enjoy your free breakfasts.”

Finally, I called my friend, Bob. “Bob, I’m not hurting anyone if I use the card, am I?” “You’d be killing chickens.”

“I’m just eating the eggs.”

“They could have been chickens.”

Bob asked his wife what she would do.

“Cathy agrees with Mary Ellen, 100 percent.”

“Did you tell her what Mary Ellen said?”

“No, why would that matter?”

I did cut up the card. I was looking forward to a three-egg, four-cheese omelet every Sunday for two years, so I’ll be a little down about that — but so will my cholesterol.

Mary Ellen was happy. She said if the café caught their mistake, I’d have egg on my face for using the card. Which was my plan from the beginning.

Common running injuries Commentary by Dr. Joseph Hui Common overuse injuries can affect the hip, knee, lower leg, foot and ankle for runners.

Injuries to the hip typically can be separated by location: sports medicine groin, anterior, lateral and posterior. Injuries to the groin may include labral tears or stress injuries to the femoral neck located near the top of the femur bone.

Physical therapy and a period of relative rest can be helpful.

Anterior or frontal hip pain may be associated with iliopsoas tendinopathy or strain, while lateral or side hip pain is typically associated with gluteus medius tendinopathy. For issues related to tendinopathy, eccentric strengthening and toolassisted soft tissue massages are often helpful. Posterior hip pain is often due to a pinched nerve, either due to piriformis syndrome or from sciatica. Pain from this issue can be alleviated with core strengthening exercises.

Injuries to the knee also can be separated by location: kneecap, joint line, lateral and posterior knee. By far the most com-

mon cause of knee pain from running is from improper knee biomechanics resulting in pain around the kneecap, which is called patellofemoral pain syndrome. Orthotics, strengthening of the knee and hip and cross training.

Lateral knee pain can be caused by a tight IT band, which is attached to the knee and helps stabilize and move the joint. Rolling on a soft foam roller, also known as a OPTP roller, and other forms of soft tissue massages can help stretch and loosen the connective tissue to reduce the pain. Posterior knee pain often results from hamstring tendinopathy. Eccentric strengthening and tool-assisted soft tissue massages can be helpful in this case.

Lastly, for runners older than 40, one common reason for knee pain at the joint line is due to wearing away of the cartilage, also known as arthritis. Transitioning to low impact running and knee and hip strengthening can help treat arthritic pain.

Street festival jam-packed with entertainment for all Spark!Fishers, presented by Freedom Mortgage, offers a full day of entertainment for all ages during its street festival on Saturday, June 30. The streets and spaces of the downtown Nickel Plate District will come alive from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with on-stage musical acts and interactive activities. The Spark!Fishers Kids Zone will be located east of City Hall, in front of the new Braden Business Systems building on Municipal Drive. Here, kids will be welcomed to activities, such as bounce inflatables, touch-a-truck, team mascots, bubbles and balls.

Older kids will have a blast at The Hangout, a fun-filled space designed just for teens. The Hangout will be located in the plaza of the Switch Building on the southeast side of Municipal Drive. This is the place for teens to hang out, try some art projects and enjoy good music.

Making certain that all families find a fun and thoughtful environment is a priority of Spark!Fishers. The Sensory-Friendly Zone is located just north of Handel’s Ice Cream on Maple Street. This space offers fun kid activities like balloon art and face-painting in a quieter environment. The IKEA FAMILY Zone is where the littlest visitors to Spark!Fishers can be cared for comfortably. Cozy nursing chairs and baby-changing tables have been donated by IKEA for this private area.

The atrium of Fishers City Hall has been transformed into a special art gallery that features the artwork from 32 professional artists who are members of Indiana Artists, a prestigious statewide arts organization founded 100 years ago. “We really specialize in multi-player,” Spelman said. “That’s an experience you can’t get at home with all your friends playing in the same room. The physical space adds an extra dimension.”

People playing in multi-player games can bring their friends or compete with other people at the arcade or use the internet access to compete with others around the world.

The games cost $25 for 30 minutes or $40 for an hour of play time. The business also offers leagues, where participants can pay $20 per week and play from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday nights.

Gentry channels Judy Garland again in Magic Thread Cabaret performances

“Judy, in my mind, was the music best entertainer to ever live,” Gentry said.

Gentry will perform Garland’s songs during Magic Thread Cabaret’s production of “Katy Gentry is Judy Garland LIVE!” The performances are set for 7:30 p.m. July 6 and 7 and 4 p.m. July 8 at The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel.

Gentry said the best thing about the 2017 show “Beyond the Rainbow” at Actors Theatre of Indiana was hearing how others remember Garland in the receiving line after the performances. The Fishers resident was one of three actresses to portray Garland at various stages of her life, sharing a most impressive actress in a lead role/professional theatre division in the 2017 Mitty Awards with Annie Yokum, who played Garland in her middle years and an actress from another show, Karaline Feller. Gentry played Garland at age 38 during her famous 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall.

Gentry had previously played Garland in her 20s in the 2007 ATI production.

“The best things that I remember hearing were, ‘Thank you for bringing Judy back to me. I remember seeing her on her show,’ or, ‘I remember seeing her live,’” Gentry said. “People had tears in their eyes telling me this. There is definitely a connection there between her and her audience.”

Magic Thread Cabaret founders Tom Alvarez and Dustin Klein approached her about starting the cabaret-style theater.

The Magic Thread Cabaret debuted in November 2017.

“They would love to feature you as Judy,” Gentry said. “Over the last few months I think it’s become its own entity.

Of course, it’s a dream for me to feature Judy again.”

She will be accompanied by music director and pianist-composer Klein, bassist

“I will be dressed as Katy and talking like Katy, but when we feature the songs, Judy will arrive,” Gentry said. “It’s a performance that allows me to share some of my connections with Judy. Then I go into her (personna) and bring her spirit out in the songs.”

Gentry’s favorite Garland song is “Come Rain or Shine.”

“It captures her entire life in one song in my opinion,” Gentry said. “That no matter what happens we’re going to get through this and sort of press on. We’ll end the first act of the show with that. A lot of the songs are taken from the Carnegie Hall show.”

Klein said he wants to accompany the show from the start.

“I was so honored that Katy asked me to music direct, and I actually sing a duet with her as well. I have also always loved this style of music. It’s my thing, for sure,” Klein said. “We thought Katy would

be a good fit for our cabaret because we had seen her in “Beyond the Rainbow” at Actors Theatre in Carmel, and we were blown away by her talent. Our mission is also to spotlight and give a stage to central Indiana singers and performers.”

Gentry said audience members are enjoying the small, intimate setting The Cat offers.

Gentry, who is known by her married name McCord as a teacher, is starting a new position with the early child program in special education at Hamilton Southeastern Schools for the 2018-19 school year. She previously was in special education in Noblesville Schools. Her husband, Greg McCord, teaches at Hamilton Southeastern Junior High.

‘Annie’ part of memorable year for Cohen Submitted content courtesy of Beef & Boards It’s only been two years since 9-yearold Sadie Cohen performed in her first production. It was the theater summer of 2016. At the tender age of 7, Cohen played Mary’s Little Lamb in “The Trial of Goldilocks” at Jr. Civic Theatre.

And it was just the beginning.

“This past year has been an exciting year for me,” Cohen said. “I was in the Children’s Chorus of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ at the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre. I then went straight on to be one of the King’s Royal Princesses in ‘The King and I’ at Brebeuf Jesuit (Preparatory School). I was also in the advanced class at Jr. Civic for the ‘Variety Hour Show’ this past spring and we just performed ‘Emoji: The Musical.’ I was so excited to sing the Matilda solo in the ‘Revolting Children’ scene.”

Now, she is on stage in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “Annie” as one of the orphans, Ruby. The musical runs through July 15.

“I wanted to be in ‘Annie’ because I like trying new experiences and I thought that it would be fun, and I love the show and the movie,” said Cohen, who was selected as a 15-and-under semifinalist for the July 3-4 CarmelFest Has Talent.

Why does this soon-to-be fourth-grader at West Clay Elementary School spend so much time in theaters?

“I like performing because I love to sing, act and dance and entertain people,” Cohen said. “It makes me happy and I know it makes other people happy, too.”

That’s not to say there aren’t a few challenges along the way – like dancing.

“I’ve had to work hard at the dancing, but it’s been worth it,” she said, adding her favorite part of the show is the song “Hard Knock Life.”

Her performing career also has included three years with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir. But when she’s not on stage, she enjoys arts and crafts, gymnastics, playing piano, swimming and playing with her pets.

“I also love going to museums and doing fun things with my family, like seeing shows or traveling,” Cohen said.

Romulus later founded Rome on Palatine Hill after killing Remus, who wanted instead to build a city on Aventine Hill. Rome, named for Romulus, expanded onto the surrounding hills. In 31 B.C., after Octavian defeated forces loyal to Mark Antony and Cleopatra, becoming Rome’s unquestioned leader, Romans hailed him as the new Romulus.

Octavian acknowledged the connection, constructing a house on Palatine Hill near a hut where Romulus report-

edly once lived. In 27 B.C., the Roman Senate gave Octavian the title “Augustus,” by which he was known when he became the first Roman Emperor. As Emperor, Augustus made the house on Palatine Hill his official residence until his death in 14 A.D. Although contemporary writers thought the house was too modest for Rome’s powerful emperor, it was sufficiently impressive that the words “palatial” and “palace” come from the house’s Palatine Hill location.

Augustus’ palace was apparently destroyed by fire during the reign of Emperor Nero and its exact location was lost until 1961, when archaeologists discovered the buried house and began excavations and meticulous restorations.

The two-story stone house was opened to the public in 2008, highlighting rooms adorned with still-vibrant frescoes. The large Oecus (Banquet) Room and smaller Mask Room display theatrical images, including comedic and tragic masks.
