ecently, I spent time at several of our hospitals throughout Africa, witnessing firsthand the incredible transformations that take place daily across the CURE network. From the life-changing surgical wards and comforting counseling rooms to the playgrounds filled with joyful laughter, God is at work. And you make it all possible.

In this latest edition of Check-Up, we will share how your support impacts families inside and outside our hospital walls. The new “Inside a Mobile Clinic” feature (see page 10) offers a peek at our efforts to reach children in need in some of the most underserved areas in the world—this issue in the war-torn Tigray region of Ethiopia.

And because transformation begins with the skilled hands and compassionate hearts of our surgeons, you’ll love reading about Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Tesfaye Mulat. He grew up in Ethiopia never having seen a doctor, and now he’s training the next generation of world-class surgeons through CURE (see page 16). What a journey!

A Decade of Your Impact in the Philippines

In 2021, we launched a strategic plan with an audacious goal: double the number of children and families served across CURE hospitals.

Thanks to God’s grace—and your incredible partnership—we did just that, and more!

Ten years ago, Tebow CURE Children's Hospital of the Philippines opened in Davao City with a vision to be the hands and feet of Christ for the 1.6 million Filipino children living with treatable disabilities. Since then, God has used us to provide 12,000+ life-changing surgeries, share the gospel with over 38,000 people, and reach 2,500+ children in remote areas through mobile clinics. Thank you for being part of this life-changing mission.

Since 2021, surgeries have doubled to more than 20,000 annually, and over 250,000 people now hear the gospel every year.

We expanded mobile clinics, cleft and burn care, hired 400 additional staff, and launched new surgical centers. All eight hospitals now meet international safety standards, and we’ve invested in clinical training, new technology, and solar power to strengthen care long-term.

Partnership with Joni and Friends Brings Mobility to Kids in Need CURE Uganda is teaming up with Joni and Friends, the international disability ministry founded by author and advocate Joni Eareckson Tada, to provide over 200 custom wheelchairs to children living with severe neurological conditions.

CURE Uganda performs life-saving neurosurgeries, but some patients may still require a wheelchair for mobility due to their conditions.

Designed for rugged terrain and narrow doorways, the Cub wheelchairs are already changing lives.

“These wheelchairs will lift a burden from families and allow children to participate in community life,” said Tim Erickson, Executive Director of CURE Uganda.

Smiles Restored: Cleft Surgery Begins at CURE Malawi Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft lip or palate. Without surgery, many will struggle to eat, speak, smile, and even survive.

For a child born in Malawi, access to this essential surgery and critical follow-up care has been scarce—until now.

CURE Malawi has expanded their plastics program to include cleft care, providing lifechanging surgeries and comprehensive aftercare for children who previously had no access to treatment.

The new surgical program will change the lives of children like Wisick, who was born with a cleft lip. His mom, Patricia, shared, “Knowing my son is the first to receive this treatment fills my heart with so much joy. Just look at him— he looks so handsome!”

New Surgeon Advances Mission at CURE Zimbabwe As CURE Zimbabwe continues to grow, so does the number of kids waiting for life-changing surgery. So, we are happy to welcome Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Netsanet Mengiste to the team!

With training from CURE Ethiopia, Dr. Netsanet brings her surgical expertise to Zimbabwe.

A graduate of CURE Ethiopia’s fellowship program, Dr. Netsanet previously served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at St. Paul’s Hospital in Addis Ababa. She now brings her expertise—and her heart for children—to help more kids in Zimbabwe walk, run, and play again.

New Surgical Centers = More Kids Healed CURE is growing to reach more children in need of life-changing care! In July 2025, CURE Malawi opened a new surgical center with four state-of-the-art operating rooms—boosting capacity by 20 percent to perform 300 more surgical procedures each year. This is just the beginning. A new surgical center that opened last fall in Niger will allow 300 more children to receive surgery, and another center opening later this year in Uganda will serve an additional 500 children annually.

When knock knees limited Bovin's steps, your generosity helped him find a new path . . . with Jesus.

A Lonely Orphan Orphaned young, Bovin endured 15 years with painful knock knees. With no access to medical care, he lost hope as simple activities like walking to school and playing soccer became impossible. Life felt lonely and isolating.

In battle-scarred Tigray, Ethiopia, you send care to children who were once unreachable—and hope to families after years of conflict and loss.

W

hen a deadly civil war broke out in November 2020 in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, hospitals closed and a humanitarian aid blockade began, isolating families from much-needed medical treatment. That need only grew as injuries from the violent conflict resulted in more children requiring care.

In total, an estimated 20 million people were impacted by the war, with more than 162,000 fatalities and 3 million displaced.

As soon as conditions allowed, CURE Ethiopia sent teams of surgeons, nurses, spiritual ministry

workers, and other staff to the area. Since 2024, 450+ patients have been examined, 80+ have been sent to CURE for life-changing surgery, and 180+ have been reached with the gospel.

This effort is core to CURE’s mission. We deploy mobile clinics to deliver essential medical care and transformative spiritual ministry where it’s needed most—whether in a war-torn region like Tigray or a remote village in difficult terrain. It’s life-changing work made possible by generous donors like you!

In Tigray, our doctors assessed patients for treatment at CURE Ethiopia, while the spiritual ministry team provided Christ-centered support to families processing trauma caused by disability and war.

A Future for Furtuna Furtuna and her family were fleeing the conflict when she fell and severely broke her right arm. “Carrying a wounded child while constantly running from gunfire—the trauma was unbearable,” said Furtuna’s father, Birhane.

Without proper medical care, Furtuna’s arm healed incorrectly, leaving it unusable.

At CURE, surgeons restored mobility to her arm and Spiritual Counselor Tewodros helped restore her spirit by sharing the hope of Jesus. Today, Furtuna is relearning to use her arm and working toward a practical goal: “I want to be able to feed myself!” she says.

UNFOLD TO SEE HOW HEALING GOES BEYOND THE OPERATING ROOM

hen six-year-old Salamatou arrived at CURE Children's Hospital of Niger (CURE Niger) with her two siblings, all living with brittle bone disease, she carried the weight of a condition that kept her from standing or walking. She also carried the emotional burden of growing up in poverty, sometimes going all day without food, and being mocked at school.

Surgeons at CURE Niger got her standing on two straight legs. But Spiritual Director Emanuel Mayaki noted, “Many children come to us with not just physical wounds, but emotional wounds as well. So healing must be more than physical.”

Because true recovery includes surgery and so much more, CURE surrounds children like Salamatou with the daily support they need—healing spaces where spiritual care, encouragement, and joyful play help extend healing beyond the operating room.

KNOWN BY NAME Healing begins with a warm welcome, where every child is greeted by name. From the very first day, patients are paired with child mentors who serve as trusted advocates.

PLACES FOR REST AND RECOVERY Patients rest before and after surgery in bright, welcoming wards where child mentors and nurses visit bedsides to pray, read Scripture, and offer the occasional lollipop. For those facing long recoveries, like Salamatou, weeks or months away from home can bring immense emotional, financial, and spiritual strain. CURE eases this burden through long-term wards where families find more than just a place to sleep. They can receive biblical counseling, life-skills training, and the support of a caring community.

NUTRITION SUPPORT THAT HEALS Because children often arrive at CURE malnourished, many are unable to receive surgery until they gain sufficient weight.

That’s why each hospital has a fully stocked kitchen and cooking staff to provide all patients and caregivers with three meals a day at no cost to them. The meals ensure patients receive the nutrition they need to grow strong enough for surgery and heal faster afterward. Salamatou’s favorite meal?

PLAY AND CONNECTION For Salamatou, as with most patients, the playroom is a favorite spot where laughter is the best medicine. Across our hospitals, playrooms and disabilityfriendly playgrounds are where children in casts, on crutches, and in wheelchairs enjoy fellowship, hear Bible stories, learn about Jesus, and find joy after their surgeries. “Play brings emotional regulation, it brings connection, and it brings felt safety. All of this helps to create a home environment for children,” says Regina Chari, Child Ministry Specialist at CURE.

After witnessing the suffering caused by a lack of healthcare throughout Ethiopia, Dr. Tesfaye has dedicated his life to serving through medicine.

With a heart for spiritual discipleship and compassionate care, Dr. Tesfaye Mulat transforms the lives of children in Ethiopia while shaping the next generation of surgeons.

URE Children’s Hospital of Ethiopia (CURE Ethiopia) is not simply a workplace for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Tesfaye Mulat— it’s like home. And the doctors, nurses, facilities workers, and dozens of other staff members he works with? They’re family.

“All surgical work needs very good teamwork . . . any surgeon alone cannot do much,” he says. “We are family. We help each other.”

Dr. Tesfaye became determined to help. So, he set his sights on medical school.

After earning a medical degree from Addis Ababa University, his experiences serving at rural clinics and hospitals burdened by extreme poverty, a lack of resources, and few trained specialists (at one clinic, he was the only doctor for a population of almost 1 million) inspired him to become a general surgeon, then a plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

Raised in a Christian home in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Dr. Tesfaye has this serving-as-onecommunity spirit woven into his soul. And he’s always had a heart for those in need. In fact, it led him to study medicine and has guided his career ever since.

“So many people would return home and they would die,” he says. “I saw so many people who were suffering, so I planned to specialize in surgical practices so that I could help people.” continued

MEETING VAST NEEDS IN A HEALTHCARE DESERT

Growing up, Dr. Tesfaye never visited a doctor. Neither did his family, friends, or neighbors. Healthcare simply wasn’t accessible or affordable. (Ethiopia has a population of over 130 million and 1.4 doctors for every 10,000 people, compared to 36.8 per 10,000 in the United States.)

Established in 2008, CURE Ethiopia is the only hospital in the country of over 130 million people that offers specialty surgical care for children living with treatable physical disabilities.

Dr. Tesfaye accepted the job at CURE Ethiopia in 2016, eager to use his skills to serve the most vulnerable—children. He quickly realized he had found the perfect home in CURE’s Christcentered environment.

“We have our Savior Jesus Christ with us, and He helps us to do all the cases. He gave us all the knowledge and all the love among each other.

That is the thing I love the most,” he says.

A PASSION FOR PATIENT CARE Dr. Tesfaye also appreciates CURE Ethiopia’s dedication as a teaching hospital, which has allowed him to learn new skills—like complex microsurgery—that expand treatment options for the country’s 2.81 million children with life-limiting disabilities.

This is knowledge he can pass on to the surgical residents he helps train. But even more than his operating room skills, he believes spiritual discipleship and modeling loving, compassionate care for patients—a pillar of CURE’s mission—are the most important things he can offer these junior doctors.

“You see patients . . . their hearts are broken.

Socially they are abandoned,” he says. “There are so many issues besides their medical conditions.”

Medical Director Dr. Tim Nunn says Dr. Tesfaye’s humility, joy in service, and strong work ethic mean he delivers the highestquality care to every child. “He frequently goes the extra mile in reviewing his patients out of hours. And despite the high volume of work, he gives patients time and attention.”

With a new surgical center and patient ward under construction at CURE Ethiopia, Dr. Tesfaye’s influence will be essential as the hospital strives to reach more children—up to 5,000 surgeries each year—with surgical and spiritual care that transforms lives beyond the operating room.

I

t was late 2006 when Patrick Cameron—a successful businessman, entrepreneur, and investor—prayed, asking God to guide his steps in meeting urgent needs around the world in the name of Jesus.

He remembers sensing a clear call: go to Africa.

Soon after, a friend invited him to Africa and connected him with CURE’s ministry—first in Zambia, then Uganda.

At CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda (CURE Uganda), Patrick was drawn to the life-saving work of caring for children with neurological conditions like hydrocephalus and spina bifida.

“I’d never heard of CURE,” Patrick recalls.

“But the first time I visited one of the hospitals, met the surgeons, and saw the children, I knew. God just knitted me in with CURE.”

A HEART FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE CHILDREN Patrick and his wife, Jenny, have developed a deep commitment to CURE Uganda.

Their faithful partnership strengthens the hospital’s work to provide specialized neurosurgeries, share the hope of the gospel

Their connection to CURE’s mission grew even more personal when their twins were born three months early. After their son suffered a brain bleed—a condition CURE Uganda treats daily—Patrick reached out to the neurosurgeons he knew at CURE for guidance. “I’ll never forget the fear we felt,” he says. “What a blessing to have some of the world’s best pediatric brain surgeons review his scans with us.”

Praise God, the Camerons’ son is healthy and thriving now.

WHEN BUSINESS BECOMES MINISTRY Patrick's vision for helping vulnerable children in Africa extends beyond hospital walls. During one of his early trips to Africa, he recognized the deep connection between lack of nutrition and poor health outcomes. Building on other business ventures, he launched poultry businesses in Mozambique and Uganda to help improve access to protein-rich foods across East Africa while also creating jobs in the region. A similar initiative is currently underway in Kenya.

“Long-term change comes when people are empowered to care for one another in their own communities,” Patrick says. “That’s why we’ve invested in both nutrition and life-changing surgical care.”

Over the past six years, as CURE Uganda has expanded to serve nearly 1,000 more children annually, Patrick and Jenny have been instrumental in helping the hospital grow into one of the world’s leading pediatric neurosurgical centers. With a new surgical center opening in early 2026, the hospital will be equipped to care for even more children and train additional neurosurgeons—growth made possible through the support of partners like the Camerons.
