A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Peter Cowles
T
he new slogan for all the CURE hospitals is “help kids heal.” We are blessed to report that God allowed us to provide healing to more than 1,580 children by performing 1,870 life-transforming surgeries at Tebow CURE Hospital in the past year. In each of our key performance indicators, we have again exceeded our targets. When we consider our outcomes, the impact is even greater. Almost every day I hear stories from our families about how surgery has improved the quality of life for their children. When we talk to patients at their follow-up visits, there are a lot of tears. Tears of joy about the bullying and isolation that stopped when their feet were straightened and their cleft lips were repaired. Stories of how they’ve gone back to school and grown emotionally and spiritually. I invite you to read these powerful stories at cure.org/curekids/Philippines. Along with our dedicated and talented surgeons, nurses, and other coworkers, our partners and donors make these changes possible. While every family leaves the hospital with a zero billing,

each surgery, of course, has a cost. Providing world-class surgical care requires many people to work together. I believe our number one focus is not surgeries but providing hope to many families who do not have the resources to help their children. How agonizing this must be. That’s why we are focused on providing lifechanging surgical care to the most vulnerable children in the hardest-to-reach places. And we see patients from nearly every area of the Philippines. Mobile screening events have increased, as have partnerships to help with transportation and housing for those coming from far away. God is the giver of hope and remains at the center of all we are doing. It is only by His grace that we can reach out to these families and provide His hope as we help kids heal. BUILDING THE FUTURE Tebow CURE Children’s Hospital Partners with Operation Blessing to Treat Clubfoot
T
ebow CURE and Operation Blessing (OB) have forged a powerful partnership through the LifeChanging Surgery (LCS) Project aimed at providing medical intervention to children suffering from clubfoot. The primary objective of this partnership is to support the pre- and post-treatment care of clubfoot orthopedic conditions using the Ponseti method. Operation Blessing has committed to providing financial assistance totaling USD 50,000 or PHP 2.7 million for one year, from February 2023 to January 2024. The funds will be used to support the treatment of 150 clubfoot patients, aged 0 to 18 years old, during this period.

This collaboration ensures that patients receive the necessary medical interventions for their condition. During their visit at the hospital, Operation Blessing’s team had the opportunity to interact with patient beneficiaries and their parents. “This is very exciting. A VIP Experience for Very Important People
F
or Tebow CURE, celebrating love on Valentine’s Day goes beyond romantic relationships and extends to include marginalized individuals such as teens with special needs. After a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19 lockdowns, the Night to Shine event made a comeback on February 11, 2023. This prom event—hosted in partnership with the Tim Tebow Foundation—is centered on God’s love for people with special needs. This celebration was made more special with the presence of Tim Tebow, the founder of the Tim Tebow Foundation; his wife, Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Tebow; and donors and friends

from the foundation. They joined in celebrating with 100 guests who were crowned Kings and Queens of the prom, including 73 patients of Tebow CURE, 20 guests from the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI), and seven patients with limb loss who received prosthetic device assistance from Davao Jubilee Foundation, Inc. Churches and organizations from all over Mindanao also came together to volunteer and serve, showing how the body of Christ celebrates God’s love for children with special needs. The Davao Convention and Trade Center was transformed into a prom-like dance hall, and guests were given a royalty experience and provided with free button-down polo shirts and dresses from partner organization, Seeds of Dignity. Professional hair and makeup artists offered their services for free to help everyone get redcarpet ready. Nor Rayray, a
renowned Christian musician and a finalist on Philippines Got Talent, also gave a musical performance and led worship. In addition to celebrating teens with special needs, the Night to Shine event also highlighted the healing of patients who were treated at Tebow CURE. Among the attendees was Ruel, who suffered from knock knees for eighteen years. His parents were unable to afford the surgery he needed. As a result, Ruel had to live with the disability. However, God led Ruel’s family to Tebow CURE, where he underwent surgery in November 2022. Ruel recovered just in time to attend the Night to Shine event. “My most favorite part was when I walked down the red carpet and people were cheering me on . . . I also enjoyed dancing . . . All of this was a first-time experience for me, and I am grateful to God for allowing me to be part of this!” Ruel shared.

Night to Shine is close to the hearts of Tim and Demi. Tim expressed his gratitude during the crowning ceremony: “It is an honor to be here and to celebrate all of you . . . as a King and as a Queen. And you know why we have a red carpet? Because in our society, red carpet signifies ‘VIP’ . . . That’s what you are to us . . . very important people . . . but
even more important, you are a VIP . . . to the God of this universe . . . We believe that’s how [He] looks at you and sees you, and how He loves you.” Thanks to the generosity of the Tim Tebow Foundation and other partner and volunteer groups, the Night to Shine event has been an avenue to share God’s love and hope with those who need it most.
More than 500 people—including 100 children with disabilities—lit up the Davao Convention and Trade Center at Night to Shine.

RISING FROM THE FIRE Rickmar’s Journey toward Healing and Transformation

W
hat would you do if tragedy struck, leaving you scarred and without a vital part of your identity? How would you face a world that judges based on appearances, while you bear the scars of a life-altering accident? For Rickmar, a young boy from south-central Philippines, these questions became a stark reality in December 2004. Rickmar was just seven years old when he and his friends played with gasoline, unaware of the impending danger. The explosion that followed changed the course of his life forever. While his friends escaped with minor injuries, Rickmar suffered severe burns and lost his entire nose. With limited financial means, the family sought treatment at a public hospital in Cebu, where they stayed for four months. His wounds were dressed, but the severity of his burns prevented doctors from

restoring his nose. The physical pain was just the start of his journey, as he also had to confront the emotional scars and the harsh judgment from society. To cope, Rickmar sought solace in his faith. Attending a local church near his home became a source of strength and deepened his connection with God. “I just accepted the fact that what happened to me was an accident, and I will have to grow up without a nose,” Rickmar recalls. Unbeknownst to him, 400 kilometers away was a children’s hospital that could provide the surgical care he needed to reconstruct his nose. Thanks to his mother’s childhood friend, who also attended the same church, Rickmar discovered Tebow CURE and a renewed sense of hope for a lifechanging transformation.
The journey was not an easy one. Dr. Andrew Hodges, CURE International Lead Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, recalls their first meeting. “I was amazed that he did not hesitate to agree to any type and number of procedures that we suggested. I was humbled by his willingness to put himself in our hands.” The medical team began the challenging task of reconstructing Rickmar’s nose with a delicate surgery, the first of its kind at Tebow CURE. They encountered setbacks, but Rickmar’s resolute spirit propelled them forward. “Rickmar was insistent that we keep trying,” shares Dr. Andrew. And try they did. Following a series of surgeries, Rickmar demonstrated unwavering faith and exceeded all expectations. The reconstruction of his nose not only restored his physical appearance but also instilled in him a newfound sense of self-assurance. “I feel more confident now when I connect with others,” he reveals.

Inspired by the compassionate care he received at Tebow CURE, he aspires to work at the hospital one day, providing hope and healing to other children facing disabilities. It is because of your unwavering support and partnership that children like Rickmar can rewrite their stories and transcend their scars.
