How To Measure Your Room For Wallpaper 1. Measure the width and height (in feet) of the wall being papered and multiply the two measurements: width x height = square footage.

2. Add the square footage of each wall being papered together to calculate the total room square footage.

3. 'LYLGH \RXU WRWDO VTXDUH IRRWDJH E\ WR ÂżQG out how many SINGLE rolls of wallpaper you will need.

4. Add the number of standard openings (doors and windows) found on the walls being papered.

For every 3 standard openings, subtract 1 SINGLE roll from your single roll total.

5. Since wallpaper is only sold in DOUBLE rolls, divide the number of SINGLE rolls by 2 to calculate the number of rolls you will need to complete your project.

Note: if your calculations do not add up to a whole number, always round up so you don’t run out of paper!

Alonzo Herndon was born into slavery in Walton County, Georgia, in 1858. After moving to segregated Atlanta, Herndon opened several barbershops including the upscale Crystal Palace in 1902. In 1905, he purchased a small mutual aid association that eventually became the Atlanta Life Insurance Company.

Our History

T

he Herndon Home, designed by Adrienne NcNeil Herndon, was built between 1908 and 1910, with Alonzo Franklin Herndon acting as general contractor. Construction of the home (except for the plumbing and electrical systems) was performed exclusively by African-American craftsmen.

The formally-composed building is constructed with multi-colored brick and features a two-story entry portico supported by Corinthian columns. One-story porches to each side of the building echo this theme in brick piers

and wooden capitals. An elliptical fanlight over the main entrance and the balustrade above the full entablature of the building’s cornice add a distinctly Georgian Revival ÀDYRU WR WKLV LPSRVLQJ UHVLGHQFH A sterling example of upper income dwellings in the early 1900’s, the Home’s interior draws upon various design traditions, including the renaissance revival forms of the reception hall and dining room, and the Rococo detailing of the music room.

he black men in Interior Design may be few but they are mighty in style, talent and creativity.

I see as a collected vision the men in design love to think out side the box and break the rules successfully even kicking the box over to achieve their design goals.

My hope is rouse the everyday man and provoke him into stepping up his interior design game, shunning the oversized recliner and remote in hand, moving from the mancave to a gentleman’s quarters with high style and sophistication. MEN NEED INTERIOR DESIGN TOO.... “I know what I want but don’t know how to achieve it.......I don’t have time‌‌I’m tired of the fratboy college look‌..My wife or girlfriend did all the decorating‌..it’s a waste of money‌.â€?

hese are some of the comments I’ve come across when meeting with potential male clients for ¿UVW WLPH 7KHLU KHVLWDWLRQV FRPH from the fact that they’ve never had to worry about decorating a home. So naturally they feel a little uneasy or intimidated by the process. The good thing is, when working with an interior designer that understands your challenges, the experience can be so rewarding.

When asked why he contacted an interior designer, Johnathan Mark Entrepreneur and Real Estate investor, said “I recently purchased my home and I wanted to make sure I did it right. I wanted to make it as stylish as I envisioned but knew I couldn’t do it on my own. A designer’s eye LV GL̆HUHQW WKDQ WKH DYHUDJH JX\ÂśV LQ WKDW they can see what the space will look like including the details like what accents and colors to choose. What fascinated me most was the selection of accent pieces and where to place them in the room- things I wouldn’t know how to do or frankly thought about.â€?

For Johnathan, the look and feel of his master bedroom at the time was top priority.

He knew what he wanted it sophisticated, but masculine.

He wanted to incorporate strong colors that appealed to his personality. Using an interior designer achieved that and more. Pieces like an oversized custom headboard in black on a softer color wall backdrop with full-length mirror accent walls that add dimension to the space as well as pops of color in seating are just some of the surprises that Johnathan hadn’t expected but so greatly appreciated!

Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds welcomed Curated Quarters to the peaceful wooded enclave in the suburbs of Atlanta he calls home.

I’ve collected of black women. They represent my mother, grand-mother and aunt, as if they are in my home with me everyday.

My tour of Dr. Hammond’s home is a great example of how you can show-case your unique personality in your home on any budget. It was a divine pleasure meeting Dr. Hammonds and we thank him for inviting us into his marvelous abode.

CQ: Where did your design inspiration come from to decorate your home?

CH: For some reason, I am in love with all things Asia so it was natural to use it as inspiration to decorate.

CQ: Where did you start when decorating your house?

CH: 2QH RI WKH ÂżUVW SLHFHV , IRXQG after I moved in was this statue.

My love for it was instant and I wanted to place it in the foyer so she’d greet everyone who visited. It became my jumping of point for decorating

SHOW HOUSE STYLE Living between Charlotte and Atlanta Will Smith is a lively as his versitlie design asthetic

W

hile making the transition of leaving his job in the insurance industry, Will landed KLV ÂżUVW FOLHQW D FRZRUNHU ZKR ZDQWHG to have her bathroom redesigned. Up for the challenge, he transformed her bathroom from sterile hospital white to a spa retreat. This project validated the VWDUW RI KLV &KDUORWWH 1 & GHVLJQ ÂżUP ,QWHULRU 0RWLYHV E\ Will Smith, LLC, in February 2000.

Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and African American and African Studies from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. However, at the beginning of his design journey he took interior design courses at Central Piedmont Community College. The designer, although, is mostly self-taught, he learned key concepts of interior design through magazines and books.

Since his humble beginnings, Will has attributed his success to his ability to connect with his clients. “I allow my clients to discover their design wants, the way I curatedquartersmag.com

learned interior design,â€? explains Will. “I give the client my portfolio and magazines, have them show me their likes and dislikes so that I may assess their taste and interpret their style, remembering, that if a space is designed tastefully, it FDQ GHÂżQH WKH FOLHQWÂśV VW\OH Over the span of his career, Will has designed hundreds of spaces for bank executives, lawyers, doctors, business owners and athletes around the country. Some of his notable clients include media mogul P. REDLINING

The Sordid Story That Created Black Neighborhoods

5HGOLQLQJ DV GH¿QHG E\ WKH )HGHUDO 5HVHUYH LV ³WKH SUDFWLFH of denying a creditworthy applicant a loan for housing in a certain neighborhood even though the applicant may otherwise be eligible for the loan.�

Race, not economic income, was the deciding factor in UHGOLQLQJ 5HGOLQLQJ SUDFWLFHV LOOHJDOO\ FXW R̆ RSSRUWXQLWLHV for Black and Hispanic consumers to get a mortgage in predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhoods and achieve the dream of homeownership. Without access to D̆RUGDEOH FUHGLW WKH PDMRULW\ RI EODFN QHLJKERUKRRGV GLG not prosper, instead they deteriorated.

The History of Redlining 7KH VSHFL¿F SUDFWLFH RI ³5HGOLQLQJ´ EHJDQ ZLWK WKH 1DWLRQDO Housing Act of 1934, which established the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). Redlining increased housing segregation by refusing to insure mortgages in and near African-American neighborhoods, while it subsidized builders who produced entire subdivisions for white, middle-class, lower-middle-class families in the suburbs, with the requirements that non of the homes be sold to African Americans.

In 1935, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB) and the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) created “residential security maps� across 239 cities that essentially designated risk levels for real estate investments in each surveyed city.

On the maps areas for investment were color coded according to desirability for lending purposes.

7\SH $ QHLJKERUKRRGV RXWOLQHG LQ JUHHQ ZHUH DĚˆXHQW suburbs outside of cities.

Type B neighborhoods, outlined in blue, were considered “Still Desirable�.

Type C neighborhoods, outlined in yellow, were labeled “Declining�.

Type D neighborhoods, outlined in red, were considered the “Most Risky for mortgage support�. They were older, center of city, black neighborhoods.

Redlining maps were also created by private lending organizations to meet the requirements of the Federal Housing Administration’s underwriting standards.

This forced them to stay in the areas that were poor and uninvested in while white America was prospering and moving to the suburbs.

Major Consequences of Redlining Still Impact Us Today Redlining lowered property values in black neighborhoods contributing to the wealth gap. Homes in neighborhoods designated as “desirable� in the 1930s, today are valued at 2-3 times more than homes in formerly redlined areas.

Most Americans build wealth through owning a home.

If homeownership rates were the same for all races, the wealth gap between black and white families would be UHGXFHG E\ SHUFHQW DQG SHUFHQW PRUH LI PLQRULW\ homeowners received the same investment returns from their homes that white families do.

Lower property values encouraged landlord abandonment.

Neighborhoods with abandoned buildings serve as havens for drug dealing and other illegal activity increasing social issues and a reluctance to invest in the area. Redlining impeded access to capital and made the cost of capital more expensive. Many African-Americans could not access conventional home loans and had to turn to predatory lenders who charged higher interest rates making it harder to build equity and requiring you to pay more for your home loan.

Due to lower home ownership rates, slumlords were able to rent out apartments that would otherwise be owned. Black and Latino mortgage applicants are still more likely to be denied the credit needed to buy a home than whites, even with the same income, loan amount, and the type of lender.

Redlining steered business investment away from black neighborhoods contributing to their blight over several decades. As a consequence of redlining, neighborhoods WKDW ORFDO EDQNV GHHPHG XQÂżW IRU LQYHVWPHQW ZHUH OHIW underdeveloped or in disrepair. When existing businesses collapsed, new ones were not allowed to replace them, often leaving entire blocks empty and crumbling. Leaving African Americans in those neighborhoods with limited access to banking, healthcare, retail merchandise, and even groceries.

A 2017 study by Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago economists found that the practice of redlining had a SHUVLVWHQW DGYHUVH LPSDFW RQ WKH QHLJKERUKRRGV D̆HFWLQJ homeownership rates, home values, and credit scores.

7KRXJK 5HGOLQLQJ KDV EHHQ LOOHJDO VLQFH WKH ÂśV the impact of the practice is still alive and being felt in communities of color today. According to the Department of Justice, “it’s a persistent problem despite years of enforcement action. $V UHFHQW DV WKH -XVWLFH 'HSDUWPHQW DQG WKH Consumer Finance Protection Bureau have taken action DJDLQVW EDQNV ÂżQLQJ WKHP RYHU PLOOLRQ IRU HQJDJLQJ LQ redlining or other forms of racial steering.

The 1977 Community Reinvestment Act a law, which was passed to stop “redlining,â€? and encourage investing in XUEDQ FRPPXQLWLHV KDV VSHFLÂżF UHJXODWLRQV EDQNV PXVW follow to be in compliance.

The Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) prohibits creditors from discriminating against applicants in credit transactions on the basis of characteristics such as race, color, and national origin. If you feel you have been the victim of housing discrimination do what you must to stand against the legacy of this all too common practice.

n 2005, Tariq Abdullah, one of the founders of TCAAD, created an architecture workshop series, for students in grades K-12, aimed at exposing them to architecture and design. The workshop won an award from the American Architecture Foundation and named The World Peace House “A program of national distinction�.

Tariq then developed an after-school and a high school architecture curriculum.

After experiencing successes in Michigan and Georgia including workshops with DeKalb County /LEUDULHV 7DULT DQG KLV ZLIH 7L̆DQ\ received requests from parents to develop the program further by integrating more school subjects such as math, science, and reading due to the student’s level of interest DQG H[FLWHPHQW $IWHU ¿YH \HDUV RI holding workshops, internships and design fellowships at Tarchitects //& WKHLU DUFKLWHFWXUH ¿UP the culmination of all of these instruments designed to expose students to architecture as a viable career, grew into the desire and platform for a charter school.

Recently, I was asked how do I feel about biophilic and other sustainable interiors being considered boring. I was taken aback! I never realized that the idea of those LQWHULRUV VHHP VWDOH WR VRPH EXW , GHÂżQLWHO\ XQGHUVWRRG Honestly, you should picture trees with green leaves and blue oceanswhen you think of nature. Then, when someone (like me) says they are going to bring nature inside your space, youprobably think, “Great. Another pale blue room with plants.â€?

Well, I have great news for you. Biophilic and othersustainable interiors don’t have to be boring. As a

matter of fact, using bold colors in my designs is one of my most favorite things! The picture above serves as an excellent example. Although the space was designed around biophilia, the primary color is red. The way it is paired with its surroundings is quite stunning, right? Pablo Picasso once said, “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist. �This could not be more true when it comes to interiordesign. There are many rules. As a matter of fact, there aretwo dimensions of biophilia, six elements and 14 patterns of biophilic design. Since I understand the rules of biophilic design, I can insert my own unique design sense. Now, I’m able to be playful with my interiors while still respecting theimportance of the rules.So, from now on, when you hear me say “bringing natureinside� or “biophilic design�, don’t worry.

You swing open the closet doorâ&#x20AC;Śnow all you hear is the needle scratching across the record of your theme song. Your closet is a disaster. In recent years closets have undergone a major transformation. Long gone are the days when they were small, poorly lit spaces where clothes and shoes are merely stored. In fact, closets have garnered quite a leading role in the home. Men are no longer letting the ladies have all the fun, but have joined the ranks by customizing their closets to meet their needs with style. The three most popular closet styles are (1) Walk-in closets, (2) Reach-in closets, and (3) Armoire or Wardrobe. To buy or not to buy? that is the question single man

As a realtor, I am always interested to know exactly why my clients want to purchase a home, what is their motivation and ultimate goal. Over the past year Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had the opportunity to work with a few single men, so I asked.

Here are a few responses that should GHÂżQLWHO\ EH ÂłJRDOV´ IRU DQ\ EDFKHORU 1. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s simple. A king needs a kingdom and it adds to the bachelor package. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What do you bring to the table?â&#x20AC;? Well, a house to potentially raise a family in.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a status symbol. Think of it like EHLQJ SK\VLFDOO\ ÂżW ,W WDNHV SODQQLQJ hard work, and dedication to obtain it, but you must be consistent in order to keep it. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve owned a home for many years youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be deemed as responsible and stable which are both great characteristics for a potential husband and father.
