Letter From The Chair Honor the Past; Cherish the Future.

My inaugural year as Chair of PM&R was time and thought-intensive, and there is always more to learn. Among the many great moments, I have enjoyed when our CU PM&R community gets together, such as the Rehab at Red Rocks, Rehabilitation Science Symposium (Gersten Day), Brown Bag Series, and CU Physical Therapy’s “Pain and Healthcare in Society” event.

Our community culture has continued to blossom, always striving toward one of our core values, “going from multidisciplinary to interdisciplinary.” In fact, this interdisciplinary ethos is reflected in many of the accomplishments of 2018: • Recruited Dr. Susan Apkon from Seattle Children’s as Chief of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine at Children’s Colorado. One of her main goals is to enhance an interdisciplinary rehabilitation service line.

• CU Rehab Science Consortium space was renovated, housing our PhD program, various principal investigators, and PT students.

• Started a new line of research in regenerative medicine (biologics).

• Our department philanthropy initiatives have benefited multiple disciplines.

• Increased our clinical footprint through services in Colorado Springs, South Denver, Broomfield and Boulder among others.

• Worked with UCHealth and Boulder Community Health to plan an additional 18 inpatient rehabilitation beds at Broomfield Hospital.

• Telemedicine initiatives involving multiple disciplines.

• Collaboration with Department of Orthopedics and their new Chair for various research and clinical services at Children’s and UCH. • Financial stability with all of our domains.

• Successful move and launch of the new Rocky Mountain Regional VA. • A number #5 ranking by the Blue Ridge Foundation for 2018 PM&R NIH-funded research, as well as a steady increase in research grants submitted and funded.

Our goals for 2019 center around how we can bake a bigger pie. We are expanding our faculty to include pediatric psychologists and exploring how to capture online education innovation to our PT curriculum and other rehabilitation training curricula. In 2019, we will work on branding UCHeath Rehabilitation services, as well as launching the VA Spinal Cord Injury Unit.

As many of you know, I’m a big Bruce Springsteen fan. His Broadway show, which borrows heavily from his recent autobiography, goes through the fact that, “the primary math of the real world is one and one equals two.” But, like a musical ensemble, the academic world is most ecstatic when one and one equals three. I look forward to another year where we work our math, our shared vision of growing the value of rehab.

Alumni Spotlight Matt Davis, MD, Class of 2007 MATT’S BACKGROUND I have had the pleasure of learning physiatry and spinal cord injury (SCI) medicine from a variety of institutions in various parts of the country. Each location has taught me different skills and different practice patterns.

Medical School: University of Texas Southwestern Medical School Residency: University of Colorado – Anschutz Medical Campus Fellowship: University of Washington WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY DOING? Currently, I am serving as the Clinical Medical Director of the SCI service line at TIRR Memorial Hermann, where I also serve as President of the medical staff and Chair two hospital committees. Academically, I serve as Director of the SCI fellowship program through McGovern Medical School’s Department of PM&R and am Chair of the Advocacy Committees for ASIA and ASCIP. On a day-to-day basis: I run one of TIRR’s inpatient SCI teams. Academically, I am engaged in research pertaining to unintended adverse consequences for SCI patients of one of CMS’s Quality Measures, and I have been advocating for change to this measure.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE PHYSIATRY? I was initially drawn to physiatry due to my interest in musculoskeletal/sports medicine. My first exposure to rehab was through my own high school football injury. When I entered residency at CU, I envisioned myself practicing in an outpatient, non-academic sports medicine setting.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FROM YOUR TIME AT CU? My time at Craig Hospital and my other SCI experiences at the VA and Denver Health shaped my career choice and laid the foundation of knowledge upon which I could build a deep understanding of SCI medicine. Nonetheless, I find that my general physiatry skills – ranging from musculoskeletal medicine to electromyography to gait mechanics – are still very useful for me in my current practice.

WHAT WAS THE MOST SURPRISING THING ABOUT THE CU PM&R PROGRAM? I was most surprised at the self-discovery that the CU program nurtured by providing a wide range of clinical opportunities.

I entered residency believing that I would eventually practice outpatient, MSK medicine in the nonacademic setting.

Now, I enjoy a fulfilling medical practice and teaching role as an inpatient academic physiatrist.

WHAT CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? SCI medicine is an underserved specialty. When I go to conferences, re-connect with fellows my program has trained, and learn how they are impacting their respective programs, I’m proud to have been involved in their training. I am also proud of my advocacy work. ASIA and ASCIP have Advocacy Committees that are presenting at national meetings, writing letters, and meeting with national leaders at the CDC and CMS. These activities were not happening a few years ago. My roles in both of these accomplishments were merely serving as part of a larger team, but rehab has always been a team effort!

DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR CURRENT RESIDENTS? When I entered medical training, my only goal was to be a provider of medical services, and to do so with excellence.

However, the rapid changes in our healthcare delivery system that are creating new challenges for physicians and patients are a major contributor to physician burnout. I have found that the best antidote to burnout is to actively advocate for yourself and for your patients. Join hospital committees so that you can impact the way decisions are made. If you see a policy that has unintended consequences, speak up; work to make a change. Our colleagues in healthcare need a better understanding of what PM&R does and what we have to offer. When working toward change, be collegial, polite, and collaborative – but don’t be so agreeable that you acquiesce to sloppily-implemented policies that rob you of efficiency and make high-quality care less accessible to your patients.

I have found that the best antidote to burnout is to actively advocate for yourself and for your patients. Join hospital committees so that you can impact the way decisions are made. If you see a policy that has unintended consequences, speak up; work to make a change.

WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU? A significant focus of my career has been engaging in constructive “conflict” in order to refine quality improvement processes at both the local and national levels. My natural tendency is to avoid conflict and simply go with the flow.

Choosing otherwise has been part of a deliberate, conscious decision. We simply cannot move healthcare delivery forward without engaging in healthy conflict that drives us to find creative solutions to complex problems.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR PERSONAL TIME? I enjoy all manner of outdoor activities. I took up fly fishing during my time in Denver, and have found that I can fly fish for redfish and speckled trout in Galveston Bay! As my children have gotten older, I can now share my enthusiasm for the outdoors with them.

Brown Bag Collaboration and Peer Review

CU PM&R is thrilled to announce the recruitment of Susan D. Apkon, MD to serve as Chief of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine at Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO). Additionally, Apkon will serve as Vice Chair of PM&R at the University of Colorado (CU), School of Medicine.

Early in 2018, Department Chair Venu Akuthota, MD, and Research Director, Lisa Brenner, PhD, ABPP, implemented a “Brown Bag Lunch Series,” in order to provide employees and faculty an informal opportunity to share information regarding concepts, methods and all things related to rehabilitation research.

Apkon began in January 2019, overseeing a Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Program known across the world. She succeeds former Department Chair Dennis Matthews, MD. Apkon was previously at Seattle Children’s, where she served as Director of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Neuromuscular Program, Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and was involved with the Center for Clinical and Translational Research. Apkon has been recognized annually since 2012 as a Top Doctor by Seattle Magazine.

“It reinforces our value of encouraging multidisciplinary to interdisciplinary care,” noted Akuthota.

“I am very excited to return to Colorado to rejoin a Department with unlimited potential,” said Apkon. “The CHCO Pediatric Rehabilitation Department has a long and strong history of providing outstanding clinical care to children and young adults with congenital and acquired disabilities.”

With the support of Dean Reilly, the leadership of Dr. Akuthota, the strong foundation of clinical faculty and commitment to enhance our research faculty, I am confident we will become one of the top 10 PM&R programs nationally.

After an initial career as a speech language pathologist, Apkon graduated from the University of Vermont, College of Medicine in 1994. She completed a combined residency in Pediatrics and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Children’s Hospital Colorado and the University of Colorado. She began her academic career as a faculty member at CHCO and CU, where she remained until 2009.

“We are beyond excited to welcome Dr. Apkon back to Colorado after her tremendous work in building a pediatric rehabilitation program in Seattle,” said Physical Medicine & Rehabiliation Chair, Venu Akuthota, MD. “She succeeds Dr. Dennis Matthews as the leader of one of the world’s largest and most-respected cohorts of pediatric rehabilitation medicine physicians. We look forward to seeing the advancements in our shared academic mission.”

Apkon noted, “I am excited because of the bright and engaged faculty that provide this care and our ability to advance the field of pediatric rehabilitation medicine through inquiry and innovation, as well as the strong collaborations we have within the larger Children’s Hospital Colorado network and our ability to leverage these relationships to advance the care we provide our patients.”

Her clinical and research interests are in the care of children with neuromuscular conditions, brain injuries, cerebral palsy and bone health in children with disabilities. She is an avid clinical researcher and has participated in numerous clinical trials focused on the use of novel drug therapies to improve the lives of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and spinal muscular atrophy.

“With the support of Dean Reilly, the leadership of Dr. Akuthota, the strong foundation of clinical faculty and commitment to enhance our research faculty, I am confident we will become one of the top 10 PM&R programs nationally,” she added.

The PM&R team welcomes faculty to participate in quarterly Research Brown Bag forums. This on-campus meeting is held Fridays from noon to 1:00 p.m. Supporting the development of individual lines of research is a high priority, allowing our investigators collaborate with one another to build effective grant proposals, foster research productivity, and to build the research community.

Rehab at Red Rocks The first annual “Rehab at Red Rocks” was held on Saturday, September 22. The departmental outing encouraged PM&R to practice as they preach during a morning of family friendly exercise activities and brunch at the nearby Red Rocks Amphitheater.

PM&R faculty, staff and family were able to choose from cycling, running, hiking and yoga throughout the morning and enjoyed spending time visiting over brunch.

New VA Presents Growth Opportunities for PM&R The Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center is a welcomed step forward in meeting the increased health care needs of today’s Veteran population. The new facility replaces the former Denver facility of 670,000 square feet with a new state of the art campus of approximately 1.2 million square feet on 31 acres, providing many new services to Veterans. The location neighbors Children’s Hospital and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado.

One of the most innovative features on the new campus is the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and Disorders Unit, a 30-bed facility that is praised as being one of the most advanced spinal cord centers in the nation. Set for an early 2019 opening, David Coons, MD, SCI service line chief, has hired numerous staff in preparation.

A total of nearly 100 staff and faculty members will be hired to provide both inpatient and outpatient care of veterans with spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis and ALS. In addition, eight clinical providers will be hired, a second SCI board-certified physician is scheduled to start and a separate call system with VA physicians will be instituted.

“We are particularly honored and committed to be serving Colorado’s Rocky Mountain Region Veterans,” said PM&R Department Chair Venu Akuthota, MD. “The VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare System’s specialized personal care epitomizes excellence in health care.”

The new campus has leading-edge technology built into every aspect, bringing Veterans in the region an unprecedented quality of health care. The SCI population will have access to their own areas, including a private courtyard, pool, dining area and learning environment. In addition, there are both private and semi-private treatment areas, with integrated spaces for outpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy.

The guiding principles for the Rocky Mountain campus are patient safety; protecting the environment through the use of green design; promoting the family’s role in care delivery with private rooms and in-suite bathrooms to encourage visitation; and improving on the overall health care experience for Veterans.

PM&R Residents Embody the Physical

Letter From The PT Program Director The CU PT Program completed another terrific year, with numerous successes of our students, faculty and staff. Among the many highlights of 2018 are the following:

As a profession that primarily uses physical means from a treatment perspective, the PM&R residents have fully embraced weekend trips and exploring all Colorado has to offer as a group over the past few years.

“We’re definitely the most active residents on campus,” said Dustin (Dusty) Anderson, MD, Class of 2019.

Alexandra (Alex) Garnett, MD, Class of 2019, noted that when their class started, the first thing they did was plan an overnight rafting trip. “Blake Kandah, MD, put it all together two weeks into us starting,” she said. “It was the perfect opportunity for us to get ready to work in a new state and really get to know each other.”

What started as an organic opportunity for newcomers to explore Colorado, has now become a yearly retreat for all. Two years ago, Dusty and his fellow residents planned a trip to Lake Tahoe over Labor Day Weekend that has now become a yearly trip. Initially attended by the Class of 2019, the group has grown to include all levels of residents.

From Rocky Mountain National Park to Aspen to Black Canyon, the excursions are more than just a perk of the active Colorado lifestyle.

“Most people come from out of state without family or close friends nearby,” said Garnett. “To come into this new environment and immediately have these people supporting you and alongside you is so valuable.”

“Whether you’re off hiking a 14er or just hanging out roasting s’mores, it’s a great way to get an intelligent group of likeminded people together,” said Anderson.

Venu Akuthota, MD assumed his position as Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) in January. Under his leadership, the department collaborated with the PT Program to renovate the research space formerly known as the Gersten Education and Research Office (GERO). This newly renovated space, now called the Rehabilitation Science Consortium, houses research assistants, PhD candidates, post-doctoral fellows, and DPT students who participate in faculty research. It also encompasses the Interdisciplinary Movement Science Laboratory (IMSL) and has telehealth capabilities.

In June, we welcomed 67 new students to the Class of 2020. Congratulations to the Class of 2018, who graduated in December. I take great pleasure in welcoming each member of the class as a colleague. Our students and alumni continue to amaze us with their abilities.

Amy Nordon-Craft, PT, DSc was promoted to Associate Professor and Mark Mañago, PT, DPT, PhD, NCS completed his PhD and was promoted to Assistant Professor. Congratulations to both for their hard work and well-deserved success.

One large initiative was an educational day focused on the opioid crisis. We are so appreciative of the number of colleagues with national prominence who joined faculty from the PT Program, PM&R and the School of Medicine at large to discuss this difficult topic.

Colleen Kigin, PT, DPT, MS, MPA, FAPTA (Class of 1970) was welcomed as Chair of the Scholarship and Endowment Board. We are very grateful for her efforts on behalf of our students. Scholarships to support physical therapy students’ education have continued to grow, with five new named scholarships established by year’s end through the generous support of alumni and community business partners. This brings our scholarships and endowments to nearly $4 million with $218,000 given in 2018 to exceptionally grateful students. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to those who have generously donated to this endeavor and to our Scholarship and Endowment Board members for their commitment and efforts.

Through the years, they have become a community, a family. “We have friends in residency across the country,” said Garnett, “we’re definitely unique in how close we are.”

Finally, I look forward to transitioning from the Program Director position once the search for a new Program Director is completed. It has been a tremendous privilege to lead the CU PT Program over the past 14 years. I am grateful to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, clinical partners, colleagues and friends for unwavering support of our efforts. Our success is truly a reflection of the strong support from all of you – we are indeed fortunate.

Aside from their more adventurous traveling activities, fellow resident Johnathon Blake, MD sends out weekly opportunities in the Denver area. Additionally, the group has regular social events after their evening lectures and “Coffee with the Chiefs” to touch base with younger residents.

Anderson noted that physiatry tends to be more independent as opposed to fields like internal medicine that are working in larger teams. The residents are also spread out across hospitals and sites in the Denver area. “It’s great to have these opportunities to regularly catch up and enjoy that camaraderie,” he said.

“Rehab is about doing the things you want to do and experiencing life in a way best for you,” said Anderson. “It’s only natural that we embrace that ourselves.”

PHYISCAL THERAPY PROGRAM

Research Lab Undergoes Renovation Research is an essential component in the mission of the University of Colorado’s Physical Therapy Program. The creation of new knowledge is essential in informing clinical practice and education, and has been a key source of the profession’s progress over the past few decades.

The program is supported by six core laboratories on the Anschutz Medical Campus, in addition to a variety of satellite laboratories and clinical research sites located across the campus and surrounding community.

Committed to research endeavors, the former spaces that housed the Gersten Education and Research Office (GERO), Human Performance Lab (HPL) and the Interdisciplinary Movement Science Laboratory (IMSL) were renovated over the latter part of 2018 to create the newly established Rehabilitation Science Consortium. The consortium is designed to be a shared workspace and meeting place for PhD students, post-doctoral fellows, residents and research assistants who conduct research with faculty in the Physical Therapy Program and other collaborations on campus.

Shortly after bringing the program to the Anschutz Medical Campus, the program’s research undertakings grew significantly. The renovation was made possible with funds from the PT Program and contributions from the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. The Consortium has three rooms for telehealth, an interactive conference room and communal, open areas that allow for better utilization of space for a growing research team.

“The Consortium allows us to have a centralized collaborative hub for our various research endeavors,” said Jennifer Stevens-Lapsley, PT, PhD, Director of the Rehabilitation Science PhD Program and PT faculty member. Current research efforts are focused around rehabilitation clinical trials, health services research, personalized rehabilitation, targeting mechanisms of movement dysfunction and translational rehabilitation technology.

Mid-May, the program will hold an open house for the Consortium, showcasing the space and the current research that is being done.

Interdisciplinary Solutions Encouraged at Opioid Educational Day The Physical Therapy Program, co-sponsored by the PT Program Scholarship and Endowment Board and the PT Alumni Association (PTAA), held an educational day on September 17, entitled, “Pain & Healthcare in Society: Changing Attitudes, Behaviors and Health Systems to Address the Opioid Crisis.” Over 250 students, alumni, community members and representatives from various disciplines across the campus attended.

The event was focused on improving pain management through a better knowledge of systems-level barriers to achieving effective collaboration, a deeper understanding of pain management across healthcare disciplines and examples of innovative approaches to pain management and collaboration.

The event welcomed speakers from other areas of the Anschutz Medical Campus including Venu Akuthota, MD, Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Rob Valuck, PhD, RPh with the School of Pharmacy and Daniel Goldberg, JD, PhD with the Center for Bioethics and Humanities. Participants from other institutions included Colorado Representative Chris Kennedy and national thought leaders: Anthony Delitto, PT, PhD, FAPTA, Dean of Rehabilitation Science, the University of Pittsburgh; Alice Bell, PT, DPT of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA); and Robert Saper, MD, MPH, Boston University.

“The scope of the opioid crisis and the challenges of caring for people with pain are sometimes overwhelming,” noted Andrew Kittleson, PT, DPT, PhD, core faculty member, Physical Therapy Program. “This event showcased so many brilliant and compassionate people, both nationally and right here in our community, who are working to make a difference.”

Areas of discussion included: • The history and scope of the opioid crisis • Barriers and opportunities for interprofessional collaboration • Examples of innovative solutions • Ideas for managing pain holistically, equitably and effectively Following a day of presentations, a core group of professionals met to brainstorm action items for the Physical Therapy Program, UCHealth and the Anschutz Medical Campus community. Additionally, as part of the CU Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Open Campus Program, the Physical Therapy Program hosted a seminar on October 4 to summarize the major learning themes from the event and solicit additional ideas titled, “Navigating the Chronic Pain & Opioid Journey.” The 2019-2020 focus of the Open Campus series will be on pain and the opioid crisis.

The program is committed to looking at further opportunities within the curriculum, governmental affairs, the APTA, Program Boards, Interprofessional Education and hospitals to reinforce commitment to the crisis.

Adele Meron, MD Adele Meron, MD recently completed her fellowship with PM&R in 2018, following her 2017 residency. Now an Assistant Professor with the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, she also practices at The Spine Center at University of Colorado Hospital (UCH), CU Sports Medicine & Performance Center and UCHealth Foot and Ankle Center in Stapleton.

At a young age, Meron went to work with her mom, a special education administrator at the Center for Disability Services in Albany, New York.

“I spent a lot of time playing with other kids with a variety of physical and cognitive differences,” said Meron. Deviating from her family of educators and creative writers, Meron was more on the math and science track, leading her to an interest in biomedical engineering. Combined with her athletic interests, she had dreams of designing adaptive sports equipment. “Once I realized that those who design these devices don’t actually get to work with and interact with the people who use them,” said Meron, “I realized a career in engineering wasn’t for me.”

When a medical student friend introduced her to the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Meron switched gears and applied to medical school. She reflected, “In my residency experience I found that practicing a combination of sports and spine medicine married my passion for sports, biomechanics and helping patients to achieve their full functional potential.”

Reflecting on her time at CU, “I consider myself incredibly lucky to have trained both in residency and fellowship at CU,” she said. “My favorite thing about training here were the relationships I made with my co-residents and hospital coworkers.” From hiking to brunching to fiercely debating everything from patient’s candidacy for rehab to the best way to treat a patellar dislocation, Meron’s experience helped to shape her own opinion and thoughts on how to best care for patients.

Fortunately, Meron was able to begin practicing in the same space that she trained. “It’s like teaching where you went to high school,” she noted. “There’s a level of comfort that makes everything easier.” Wanting to stay at CU for her fellowship, Meron had her sights set on remaining involved with mentors like Drs. Scott Laker, Venu Akuthota, Jason Friedrich, Rachel Brakke, Bill Sullivan and Deborah Saint-Phard. “I feel incredibly fortunate to be finished with my training and continuing to learn from them.”

In my residency experience I found that practicing a combination of sports and spine medicine married my passion for sports, biomechanics and helping patients to achieve their full functional potential.

A self-proclaimed rookie, Meron’s practice is varied and interesting. In addition to her work with PM&R and UCH, she is the first PM&R Doctor at the UCHealth Foot and Ankle Center in Stapleton. As she was starting her fellowship training, Kenneth Hunt, MD, was realizing his vision for a comprehensive foot and ankle center and looking for a non-operative

physician to join the group. Rachel Brakke, MD, allowed Meron to tailor her fellowship experience to gain extra training in foot and ankle care.

“Physiatrists provide non-operative care for all musculoskeletal issues,” noted Meron, “so we fit well into a foot and ankle center.”

Additionally, the Foot and Ankle Center has a state of the art motion analysis lab which lends itself to studying injury prevention, walking and running gait mechanics, joint kinetics and kinematics, all of which are exciting ways to enhance a musculoskeletal practice.

To tap into her sports interest, Meron is also involved with the Boulder Sports Performance Center. “I love seeing acute sports injuries and being involved in the care of student athletes at CU Boulder,” she said. “I’m able to see sport-related concussions, which is one of my areas of interest.”

With a young family, Meron is familiar with juggling the work-life balance. “I have a 5-year-old and a 1-year-old which, if you do the math, means I had a baby during my intern and fellowship years of training,” said Meron. “I basically live for bad timing.” Meron credits her supportive training programs and husband, noting, “He keeps us fed and laughing, which are my top two priorities.” She also added that she commits to saving any work to be done at home until after her children’s bedtime. “I just learn from my mistakes and hope that the kids are too young to remember them,” joked Meron.
