From a big-picture perspective, College That Works For You is a theme that is as much a core institutional philosophy as it is a compelling marketing phrase.

We make college work for students because of the way we work with students.

The realities of their lives are never ignored. In fact, those realities help drive decision making at Kingsborough – from the programs that are offered to the way classes are scheduled, from the high level of individualized support by professors to the inclusion of real-world experience in the curriculum. Students with big dreams recognize the difference this kind of learning environment can make and repeatedly give us high marks for accessibility, affordability, flexibility, proven career preparation, second-chance opportunities, and strong commitment to traditionally underserved populations.

Our vision of what makes college work is also appreciated by a wider constituency.

It is a philosophy that is in alignment with city leaders focused on enriching the value and expanding the circle of public higher education, with neighbors who see us as a life-enhancing resource, with a business sector that wants a dependable resource for dependable employees, and with four-year colleges that appreciate enrolling students who are prepared and poised to succeed.

Starting Again Is A Good Start

PROGRAMS THAT WORK On the surface, it sounds simple. Educational and career programs that work – really work – are those developed for a specific population and with a specific purpose. Another caveat is that these programs must also be agile enough to adapt as necessary to remain timely and viable. Kingsborough’s “this is just right for you” approach clearly trumps “one size fits all” in terms of engagement and effectiveness.

Keeping It Flexible, Keeping It Real The underlying goal of the Center for Economic and Workforce Development is to meet the ever-changing needs of the workplace with an ever-ready workforce. To stay in tune with the real world, Kingsborough is adamant about not operating in a vacuum but rather about creating or modifying each academic program in concert with the business world.

One of many successful examples is Project Welcome, a program borne from a $1.6 million U.S. Department of Labor grant to Kingsborough to train 500 New York City residents over three years in tourism and hospitality. Launched in February 2007, it offers students hands-on training and certification in food service, hotel-related jobs and meeting and planning. Project Welcome, which requires a time commitment of 12 to 15 weeks, is a free program that also includes

certification test fees; books and supplies; internship opportunities; and assistance with job placement.

There were 60 - plus proud graduates in the program’s first graduating class in August. All total, 200 students have participated in Project Welcome over a year’s time – far outpacing the grant’s original mandate of 160. Another key aspect of the program is that it reaches out to local high school juniors and seniors and offers them the opportunity to complete up to 15 college-credit hours in the culinary arts before they graduate.

To get a picture of Kingsborough’s New Start program, envision a bridge leading from a dead-end to a place where anything is possible. It is a program that gives students the second chance they deserve and desire. It is a realistic alternative for students who enter one of the program’s 26 participating colleges and find themselves in academic trouble. It is also a comfortable choice for students who have previously dropped out of college.

Relying on intense counseling, targeted advising and small classes, the New Start program proves that students who once were unsuccessful can be successful. When a New Start student graduates from Kingsborough, he or she is guaranteed admission to a CUNY four-year college. Others go on to many SUNY and private colleges or return to their original colleges. Since 1985, over 12,000 students have heeded their “wake-up calls” and resumed their educations by means of this program.

“When I got my first grades, I knew I could lighten up and enjoy this.”

“The threat of failure is hindering, almost debilitating,” says this success story. “I’ve been out of school since 16, when I left school in upstate New York and moved to Brooklyn. Kingsborough opened the door again for me to get an education.

The New Start program cleared the slate, gave me the opportunity to be someone, and lent a new peace of mind to my life.” It also brought a whirlwind of activity: President of the Honors Club; Student Ambassador; a trip to Salzburg, Austria for the Global Ethics Conference; an internship with the New York Historical Society; and a stint in New Hampshire volunteering for the Obama campaign.

Next? After graduation in June, it’s on to study for her Bachelor’s degree – a double-major in history and French.

On a final note: Project Welcome, along with other Center for Economic and Workforce Development programs, is clearly about getting prepared for a good job. However, the outcome often surpasses that. Students can gain a newfound confidence about attaining higher education and opt to begin a degree program.

Fast Track Can Be The Right Track There’s Real Honor In Excelling Kingsborough offers an active and engaging community for high-achieving students. Our Phi Theta Kappa chapter is one of the largest honor society chapters in the country.

Building on that foundation, Kingsborough has committed to creating a flagship Honors Program by 2010. In response to student requests, there will be more Honors courses, better scholarship and transfer assistance, and an expanded calendar of Honors activities.

But Levald Thomas did. How? “Because of professors who were more like cheerleaders.” By the time he earned his GED at Kingsborough and entered the degree program, he’d learned he could succeed. At the same time, he had also learned that he could lead. It started when he spotted a campus flyer for the Student World Assembly. He joined, became VP, and has traveled on behalf of the group to Montreal, Costa Rica and Ghana. Adding to his leadership resume: president of the Personal Training Club; student government president; and a seat on the CUNY-wide University Student Senate.

In 2006, he organized a trip to Nigeria, sponsored by the Nigerian government, for 9 CUNY students.

Not surprisingly, he received the Kaplan Educational Foundation Scholarship which will fund the completion of his Bachelor’s degree.

Overall, a great deal of progress has been made toward reaching that goal. Our faculty now includes a new Honors Director.

An expanded Honors House, a one-stop home for all Honors services, will be completed in September, 2008. The number of Honors courses has already doubled. Our success in recruiting promising high school students as Presidential Honors Scholars – scholarship students who commit to completing seven Honors courses and graduating from the Honors Program – has been tremendous.

Our Honors students and faculty participate in the National Model United Nations Conference annually and travel abroad for valuable international experiences such as the International Study Program at Salzburg Global Seminar in Austria or the Peace and Reconciliation Program in Costa Rica.

Individually, the progress has been perhaps even more impressive. The proposals of six of our Honor students were accepted for presentation in the Northeast Regional Honors Council Conference in April 2008. Four of them published their work in the last edition of our Honors Journal, Distinctions. One of those, involved in paleontology field research, co-presented with his professor at a science conference in Japan.

Recent students who graduated with Honors have received acceptance letters from New York University, Cornell, University of Rochester, Stony Brook, Mount Holyoke College, American University, Northeastern University, George Washington University, Temple University, SUNY Buffalo, and University of Connecticut.

All Together Now Kingsborough has become a recognized, national leader in the concept of Learning Communities. Entering students join a cohort of classmates. These students then progress together through a series of linked, developmental courses – encouraging each other, learning from each other, building confidence in each other. Between 750 and 800 students become part of a Kingsborough Learning Community each semester. The Kingsborough model – designed to give underprepared students the leg-up they need to do college level work – has become a model for similar programs at other colleges and universities and has been recognized with a grant from the Ford Foundation.

At Kingsborough, each cohort consists of 25 students who take an English course, a content course required for their major, and a student development seminar. Students also receive enhanced tutoring and textbook vouchers.

The result, in a word, is success. Students in our Learning Communities pass their developmental courses at a higher rate, and semester-tosemester and year-to-year retention rates continue to improve.

All community colleges struggle with retention and graduation rates. The overarching reason is the complex mix of personal challenges – work schedules, family demands, monetary limitations, etc. – faced by so many students.

ASAP (Accelerated Study in Associate Programs) is the City University of New York’s thoughtfully constructed answer to offsetting this struggle by enabling eligible students to get their associate degree quickly (in two or three years) and as economically as possible.

ASAP is a program that builds on an educational foundation long in place at Kingsborough – our commitment to advising, mentoring and tutoring; and the opportunity for students to advance together as a group as part of our highly touted Learning Communities.

The program’s hallmarks include free tuition and fees for students eligible for federal and state financial aid, consolidated class schedules, and free textbooks.

Degrees offered under the ASAP umbrella at Kingsborough include Business/Accounting; Liberal Arts; Mental Health and Human Services; and Tourism and Hospitality.

During the past year, Kingsborough recruited 250 students into the program – students who are currently in the process of discovering their individual strengths and innate abilities to succeed.

In short, the overarching goal of the Academic Advising Center for Health Careers is to guide a student to the “right choice” from all the options available and to support the efficient completion of his or her program.

Partners In Science And Success The Department of Biological Sciences is a strong advocate of teamwork – particularly in terms of joining forces with complementary, four-year CUNY colleges to enhance the ultimate outcomes of students.

The Medgar Evers/Kingsborough Bridge Program has been developed to put Kingsborough biology students on a seamless track to complete both their A.S. and B.S. degrees. The idea is to eliminate the transition period that often occurs between programs – a period that can cause a serious stumbling block even for well-qualified students.

COURSES THAT WORK An inherent role of a community college is to continuously revise, develop and introduce academic and career courses that mirror both the desires of students and the demands of the professional world.

2007 has been a banner year in that regard for Kingsborough.

And So It Begins: A Career In Health Many people – make that most people, including incoming students – are amazed to discover Kingsborough offers 18 different health-related career paths. The range is remarkable: Biotechnology, Exercise Science/Personal Training, Food & Hospitality, Gerontology, Health Administration, Health Education & Promotion, Medical Office Administration, Mental Health & Human Services, Nursing, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physical Education Teacher, Physician Therapy Assistant, Physician Assistant, Recreation & Recreation Therapy, Speech Communication, and Surgical Technology. Some of these programs award two-year terminal degrees, readying graduates to step directly into the work world.

Some are Transfer Option Programs, readying students to move on to the completion of their bachelor’s and, likely, master’s degrees.

The reason for all the variety is all the opportunity. The health field is the largest employer in the borough of Brooklyn, and near the top of the list in greater New York City. The jobs are there. We make sure qualified employees are there, too.

The Academic Advising Center for Health Careers, with the support of a Perkins Grant, was inaugurated to serve as a “focusing point” for the thousands of students interested in health-related careers. One-on-one advising sessions help a student decide on the path that best matches his or her strengths, interests and personality. The next step is making certain he or she is aware of specific entry requirements (course work, volunteer work, exams, etc.) The final phase is honing in on the exact courses that need to be completed, in order to avoid the waste of any credit hours. In addition, there are Allied Health Learning Communities that immerse students in the particulars of their chosen careers.

At the core of the program is a two-year intervention and enrichment period to lay the foundation – including improved verbal, written, mathematical, and social skills – for a biomedical career. This aspect is of particular value to minority students who are grossly underrepresented in this important arena. Other features include academic mentoring, career counseling, money for books, research opportunities, and trips to scientific meetings and seminars.

The Brooklyn Gateway Project, a collaboration between Kingsborough and Brooklyn College, aims to increase the number of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math majors who successfully complete their introductory biology, chemistry and physics courses.

These gateway courses are the first steps to becoming a full-fledged science major. Students frequently fail these courses, give up and then move into non-science areas. To change that scenario, the Project centers around immersion programs that incorporate – in addition to the traditional lecture and laboratory components – mandatory peer-led team learning sessions, individual tutoring, access to faculty-directed student research projects, and group trips to NYC science facilities such as the Museum of Natural History and the Planetarium.

“I felt safe at Kingsborough. I fit in quite well, which is why I think I did quite well.”

From Kingsborough Community College to Columbia University; from Columbia University to Cornell Medical School; and ultimately to the National Institute of Heath. That’s quite an impressive journey for a first-generation college student from a blue-collar Brooklyn family – especially when you consider Dr. Richard Maraia started it behind the wheel of a New York taxi. “I felt like I was strong in science, but I didn’t know if college was for me.

Actually, I was intimidated. Then I gave Kingsborough a try. Anatomy professor Teddy Markus gave me the inspiration and a Columbia scholarship program – which, by the way, Kingsborough contacted me about – gave me the means to live out that inspiration.” Today, this noted doctor and research specialist runs a lab that studies the protein LA and regularly shares his team’s results through a series of published articles.

Taking It One Step At A Time Numerous new certificate programs in an array of areas were added to the Kingsborough curriculum over the past year. While these programs vary widely in content, they are consistent in intent.

If You Can Make It Here Broadcast & Technology Management (part of the Department of Communications and Performing Arts, which also offers associate degrees in Theatre & Music and Speech Communication) has been a stalwart Kingsborough program for 31 years. Two recent milestones illustrate how this program honors its past as it stays in sync with constantly changing and ever-more complex technology.

An icon of the program, radio station WKRB, where all production and programming is done by students, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2008. Alongside that achievement is the

recent completion of a new, cutting-edge editing facility built around the world’s most popular motion picture and television editing system, Avid. On the advice of industry experts, the facility is arranged with 12 workstations to engage students in daily teamwork – a highly valued attribute. While the Avid system has a steep learning curve, mastering it gives graduates the skills to walk into the best-paying jobs available in the industry.

One last highlight: the Broadcast & Technology Management program is receiving a $250,000 grant from the State of New York to transform its entire television facility into high-definition.

We take the view that a certificate program is both a means to an end and, perhaps even more importantly, can be the beginning of a rewarding academic journey. Students who enroll in and complete a certificate program gain not only the skills they need to quickly enter the workforce, but also gain the self-confidence they often need to continue for a degree. Particularly with students who are apprehensive about their ability to succeed in college, the completion of a certificate program shows them that they can do it!

Each of the new certificate programs is built around regular college courses taught by college professors and has been planned with direct industry input. We find out where the jobs of the future are and ask those employers what they are looking for, what we should be teaching, what is current – and the answers we get are specifics, not generalities. When those specifics change (as they always do at some point) so, in turn, does the related course content.

Professor Laurel Marshall, who joined the KCC faculty after 20 years with TWA, has taken her classes onboard cruise ships in Halifax for a week’s instruction; traveled with students to many conferences, including the recent Society for Accessible Tourism and Hospitality; spent days “in action” with students at the airport; and sent more than a handful to Walt Disney World on paid internships. Why? “I personally believe that when we teach outside the classroom, students retain much more information.” It was her get-real, hands-on attitude that played a big part in her being awarded a President’s Innovation Award in 2006.

Constant Learning Means Constant Improvement Catching up on basic academic credentials, focusing on building a career, or simply wanting to learn more about a particular subject are all objectives that fall under the umbrella of Continuing Education. This year’s enrollment in Continuing Education classes surpassed 21,000 students from all walks of life.

WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY Kingsborough College is determined to be a good neighbor. It is as much a part of our heritage as it is our future. As a result, we constantly reach out to enliven, enrich and entertain the friends and supporters who live around us.

Helping Helps Learning The idea of service to the community is tightly woven into the Kingsborough commitment. The College is aligned with an array of community partners, and through our Service-Learning program, faculty members in various subjects have the opportunity to integrate service projects into their courses.

All of the projects cited – along with many others – are workable projects with tangible value. They open students’ eyes to realistic, make-a-difference career options.

They are the bridge between what a student reads in a textbook and what he or she can do in real life.

The surprising part is not how the process operates, but how much it accomplishes – for our students, for the organizations being served, and for the people being helped. For instance, KCC journalism students honed their writing skills by developing publicity materials for the Greening of New York City and New York 2010. Students in mental health and human services classes developed an ongoing outreach program to inform the community about domestic abuse. Even ethics and philosophy students got into the act, working with Animal Care & Control on a “respect for animals” campaign.

They are adults of all ages taking English as a Second Language courses, pursuing their GED, or earning work-ready certificates in everything from accounting to culinary essentials, from practical paralegal to child care, and from pharmacy technician to emergency medical technician. These examples are just the tip of the iceberg – with a Heart Care Certificate being the newest option. There are also those with their eyes on a better future enrolled in specialty sessions such as taxicab license exam preparation. (Kingsborough is one of only a few sites approved by the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission to offer these classes.)

They are people from the neighborhood exploring, for starters, their interests in art, languages, music & dance, fitness & sports, and computers.

“I think students find my natural curiosity about the world contagious.”

They are also elementary school children (ages 7 to 13), who take part, on weekends and during the summer, in Continuing Education’s College for Kids. In addition to lunch, these young learners are served a smorgasbord of academic, remedial and physically-challenging classes. Several adult education classes are scheduled at the same time for the parents waiting in the wings.

“Personal observation is the best way to understand how something works.” That belief inspired Dr. Fred Mayerson’s “road trip” this past summer. Along for the ride – and the discovery – were twelve students in his Principles of Marketing class. “We visited ten different facilities – including the manufacturing plants of Harley Davidson and Herr’s Snacks; NBC Broadcasting headquarters; and the Federal Reserve Bank in Philadelphia (where each student received a bag of shredded 100 dollar bills).” Yes, there were tours at each stop. More important, however, students sat down with marketing directors, research and development managers, and even business owners for detailed interviews about their operations. “It was such a hit, my aim now is to cover other parts of the country and visit business icons like Steinway Piano and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream.”

To put it simply, the unusual breadth of our Continuing Education program is the result of the unusual depth of our mission to serve the community.

An Exciting Debut: Lively Arts & Ideas To promote lifelong learning in the arts, the college has expanded its cultural programming into an exciting year-round festival of free and affordable performances. The mission of Lively Arts & Ideas at Kingsborough is to make the arts accessible to the underserved neighborhoods of southern Brooklyn and adjacent Queens communities.

Lively Arts & Ideas offers audiences of all ages a chance to flex their cultural muscles at adventurous music and dance concerts; thought-provoking discussions with writers; and inventive works of theatre.

“I was a community college skeptic. I thought it was somewhere to go just to have somewhere to go.”

“I was trying to figure out my life, working full-time in restaurants, and Kingsborough was right there – and affordable. So, why not? Of course, it wasn’t long before that “ah-ha” moment when I realized what Kingsborough could mean to me.”

Raquel Flecha soon started taking Honors classes; got into Phi Theta Kappa; helped coordinate and participated in the National Model United Nations Project at the college and the NYS Model Senate program; went to D.C. as a student lobbyist; and interned in an art gallery – for starters! She is now considering her next step – maybe Smith, maybe Mount Holyoke, maybe even Harvard.

“Ten years from now I want to be deeply involved in activism – a humanitarian cause abroad, something environmental, perhaps law. Kingsborough has made anything possible for me.”

With its spectacular natural setting on Manhattan Beach, Kingsborough is poised to become the cultural hub of southern Brooklyn.

The college’s magnificent arts complex includes a 700-seat performing arts center; a 300-seat playhouse; The Rotunda, an event space with panoramic ocean views; an art gallery; and outdoor venues including a 2,000-seat band shell for summer concerts.

The expansion of cultural programs in 2006-07 was supported in part by funding from the New York City Council and the Department of Cultural Affairs. KCC was awarded two major grants from the New York State Music Fund totaling $110,000 to underwrite a total of nineteen performances of contemporary world and American music

by New York-area artists throughout the year.

Cultural programming includes four series that are produced by the college’s new Department of Performing Arts & Special Events: Hot Summer Nights is an annual series of free outdoor summer concerts. In July 2007, this series featured an American Roots festival celebrating folk legend Woody Guthrie; a Global Rhythms weekend of world music from Latin America and the Caribbean; pops concerts; salsa and swing dancing.

Nearly 6,000 people attended.

Free Sundays concerts showcased Brooklyn artists performing traditional music and dance from Argentina, Russia, Iran, Cuba, South Africa and Haiti. This series featured a collaboration with Carnegie Hall’s Neighborhood Concert Series as well as performances by all three of our Community Arts Partners: the Brighton Ballet Theater, the Brooklyn Community Concert Band, and the Kingsborough Musical Society Chorus.

Audience served totaled 3,600 people.

The Children’s Theatre Festival marked its 19th season of serving school groups on weekdays and family audiences on weekends. This year’s expanded season included Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, our first touring production from the famed Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. This program served over 8,000 students. These included a record number of physically challenged students and caregivers as well as students from low-income schools, who experienced live theatre at our festival thanks to an expanded program offering free and subsidized tickets.

Third Thursdays are casual free lunchtime performances of world music. This weekday series gives our students and community an opportunity to learn about other cultures and traditions. It is especially appreciated by thousands of Kingsborough students whose job, family, and academic obligations prevent them

from experiencing live performances on evenings and weekends. More than 4,800 attended.

Additional cultural offerings in 2007 included the third annual Best-selling Author Series, a popular series of free talks by guest authors that provide audiences with a first-hand glimpse into their writing lives. In 2007, featured authors included renowned journalist and nonfiction writer Gay Talese (Unto the Sons) and National Book Award winner Julia Glass (Three Junes).

Talking Over Breakfast The President’s Leadership Breakfast – a series of conversations with noted local business leaders and elected officials – was launched by Kingsborough Community College on October 22, 2007. The inaugural event featured New York Daily News reporter Errol Louis interviewing Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.

The goal of this new, outreach initiative is to further honor the college’s civic duty by providing a forum where business, economic development and environmental issues relevant to the surrounding community can be freely and openly discussed. An important side benefit is that the President’s Leadership Breakfast gives Kingsborough students – our future entrepreneurs and leaders – the opportunity to hear, in person, the success stories of seasoned leaders.

The Place To Be In Any Event If you have ever walked into the Rotunda on the Kingsborough campus, you know what a beautiful facility it is, especially its setting overlooking the ocean on three sides. It’s the kind of place that would be perfect for almost any social or business event. And now it is.

One of our best community-centered decisions of this past year was making the Rotunda available on a rental basis, with profits going into scholarship funds. It has quickly become a favorite choice for local weddings, business conferences, educational seminars, fundraisers, and awards ceremonies.

These on-campus events also give Tourism and Hospitality students real-life front-of-house and back-of-house hospitality event experience.

Caterers hire our culinary students and often offer internships; and students in the brand new Food Product Development Program are happily making use of the industrial kitchen.

By the way, this splendid kitchen is also available as an “incubator site” to members of the local food industry who are in the process of creating and/or testing new offerings.

GRANTS Grants are vital to the mission of Kingsborough. Support from foundations and corporations helps us to further the work of students and faculty.

Recent Grants to Kingsborough “I’m a mid-thirties, non-traditional student raised in the tropical twin island of Trinidad and Tobago, married, and the mother of six children, ranging in age from 14 to 4. When I decided to go back to school, I was scared and hesitant. At the end of my first semester at Kingsborough I had a 4.0 cumulative grade point average. That truly stirred and motivated me.” Clearly! Two years later, Helianne was the Kingsborough Community College Class of 2007 Valedictorian (with a perfect GPA). Along the way, she interned with Senator Hillary Clinton’s New York City office and took a leading role in numerous campus activities – from Peer Advisor to the KCC gospel choir. “Today I am thrilled, with the help of a CCTOP scholarship, to be attending The Steinhardt School of

•$ 934,632 from the U.S Department of Health and Human Services for research to increase HIV awareness and prevention among Black and Latino males. Building upon similar studies focused on mostly white males, this project will provide valuable information to a population at risk for rising HIV infections, potentially saving millions of additional lives.

•$ 481,392 from the N.Y.S. Department of Labor to advance career opportunities for the Limited English Proficient population. Serving the needs of New York’s workers and businesses, this project will help workers to pursue limitless opportunities for personal growth and professional advancement while making valuable contributions to the workforce in New York City.

•$ 317,872 from the N.Y.S. Department of Education for a summer science program serving New York’s middle school students.

This past summer, over 60 urban middle school students applied the theory and practice of the physical sciences while sailing the New York Harbor. This unique hands-on summer program was made possible through a partnership between Kingsborough’s College for Kids and the South Street Seaport Museum’s schooner, Pioneer.

•$ 305,000 from the Robin Hood Foundation for continued support for Kingsborough’s Learning Communities program.

Kingsborough’s successful learning communities’ model has shown promising results, demonstrating improved retention and achievement among participating first semester students.

GRANTS, continued •$ 110,000 over two years from the New York State Music Fund to support two free music series: Global Rhythms, featuring world music by emerging and established artists from our area who draw from music traditions that span the globe; and American Roots, a weekend festival showcasing artists spanning the spectrum of homegrown roots music, from gospel, blues, soul, and jazz to bluegrass, country, indie rock and folk.

Blend that eye-opening revelation with the persistence that is obviously part of her DNA and it’s easy to understand how, after a lifetime in the restaurant business (beginning as a waitress), including 25 years as general manager of the Empire Diner – one of New York City’s iconic eateries – Renate Gonzalez now co-owns the place with her partner/chef. “I was working, raising a family and had never been to school in the U.S. when I came to Kingsborough.” (She grew up in Germany.) “I had to do 85 percent of it part-time and it took me five years – but I did it. And much of the credit has to go to teachers who were dedicated, helpful – simply wonderful people.” To give back, Renate speaks to Kingsborough classes and will participate in the college’s upcoming Homecoming Day.

•$ 30,000 from MDRC to implement a new Learning Communities model. Building upon the success of Kingsborough’s first-semester learning community model, this innovative new pilot program, Career-focused Learning Communities, is designed to help students envision themselves as professionals and reflect on their own development as they move toward their goals.

•$ 25,000 from the N.Y.C. Department of Cultural Affairs to support free and affordable arts programming for Kingsborough’s local community. Offered at Kingsborough’s own state-of-the-art performing arts center, spectacular programs such as Kingsborough’s Free Summer Concert Series, Free Sundays at Kingsborough, and the Children’s Theatre Festival, provide high-caliber cultural enrichment for our students and neighboring communities.

•$ 25,000 from the Independence Community Foundation for continued support for a program serving Kingsborough’s under-represented male students. This program has significantly increased student retention for an at-risk population, while providing student participants with the tools they need to achieve success as they strive toward reaching their career goals.

•$ 22,000 from the Corporation for National and Community Service for a service learning initiative. In cooperation with the New York City Housing Authority, this program has provided essential services to local disadvantaged children and teens while imparting traditional American values such as democratic participation and civic responsibility.
