From the Editor EDITOR A few days ago, I was mowing my lawn.

During this weekly task, I try to embrace this time and make it an opportunity to think through things and work out situations in my head. I’m sure that many neighbors have witnessed me talking to myself and thought I was some type of crazy person. During this time I came to the realization that I wanted to create a cover piece reflective of the amazing youth at Centenary.

They are full of energy and ideas and are at such a crucial age in their spiritual journey.

What would this piece look like?

What did I want to present? I didn’t know. What I was aware of is the current process of confirmation.

These wonderful comfirmands will be presented in May as they make their commitment to Christ and his church.

Every year, during the confirmation retreat, the confirmation class makes prayer benches. Each confirmand personlizes their bench with aspects making each one unique. You will see each prayer bench on Confirmation Sunday. I knew this needed to be on the cover.

I know this cover is different from past issues. I hope you will embrace it as a symbol of our tremendous youth ministry and in turn embrace all of youth as they continue in the journey.

Without a Doubt Dr. W. Mark Ralls

T

he beautiful window in the east gallery of our sanctuary displays the Risen Christ. He stands before the disciples in glory and calls them to “Go into all the world and make disciples.” The full text of Matthew 28, however, includes a disturbing detail. “They worshipped him,” recalls Matthew, “but some doubted.”

I always assumed that meant that at least a few of the disciples doubted the miracle of resurrection. They were unsure that this figure standing in front of them really was Jesus, their rabbi and friend.

Yet, Bible scholars who can detect subtle nuances in the original Greek text have noted that my assumption is most likely incorrect. The phrase “some doubted” is self-reflective.

What some disciples doubted was not the evidence before them but the strength of faith within them. In other words, they did not doubt Jesus. They doubted themselves. They believed whole-heartedly in the risen Christ. Yet, they were not so sure they had what it takes to fulfill the holy task he had placed before them.

Sunday, who are we not to? We are standing before the radiance of our Risen Lord. He promises to go with us and if we only allow it His light will shine through ordinary vessels like you and me.

I am so deeply grateful to the James Alexander Gray family for the gift of this window. We need to look upon it and see the Gospel in splintered glass. This is especially true this year as our congregation faces a financial crisis that if we are not careful will lead to a crisis of faith. We may start to doubt. But more than likely our doubts will not be directed at God. We will doubt ourselves. We will doubt ourselves as the People of God. Yet, this beautiful window reassures us. There is no reason to doubt.

We too stand before the radiance of Christ. Like stained glass itself, this radiance shines through us. Just like the first disciples, we – by the grace of God – are fully equipped to do the great things our Lord has called us to do. As with them, He promises to walk beside us.

How sad but how familiar too! Most doubts do not pertain to God but to ourselves. Who am I? Who are we?

How can I do great things for God?

These have been difficult months for us all but as I write this I am brimming with confidence. How could I do otherwise? After all, I have not only witnessed the power of resurrection. I have seen His risen glory shine through all of you.

JM: My favorite part of the show is the middle of the second act when the brothers return to Egypt. It is a lot of fun for me to play that scene because the brothers don’t know it is Joseph when they beg for food. Joseph decides to teach them a lesson in humility because “after all, they have tried fratricide.” I enjoy playing the dramatic scene and acting mean for a little while. It gets a little intense for a few minutes.

TCW: What message do you hope the audience will take away from the performance?

JM: I hope the audience leaves Joseph… thinking about hope and the sense that God is always there to take care of us. It is a fun show with catchy and accessible music. But, the show also tells a story of jealousy, judgment, humility and forgiveness. In the end, Joseph forgives his brothers for their misguided actions and the brothers repent. I think Joseph acts out of kindness because he knows that God is there to take care of him and feels compelled to use his fame and power to take care of his family and everyone else he can help. I also hope that the audience members walk away from Joseph… with a smile on their faces.

ith the musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, quickly approaching, Through Centenary Windows (TCW) sat down with one of the main characters, Joesph, played by Jeff Maggs (JM). We wanted to ask a few questions and get his thoughts about the upcoming performance.

TCW: Why did you want to audition for the musical?

JM: I wanted to audition for Joseph because the music is a lot of fun and because I wanted to be a part of Centenary’s first show in the new auditorium. It has been a great experience and I am very excited to be doing this show with my daughter, Cassie (it is her first show).

TCW: What is your favorite part of the show?

gave me years of voice lessons and helped me be a confident and strong musician.

TCW: Other than Joseph, who is your favorite character and why?

JM: My favorite character in the show is the Narrator. She gets to sing a lot and have fun telling the story. She has a harder job than Joseph because she weaves in and out of the story, whereas Joseph is in the story the whole time. It is a hard part to sing and Allison does a great job! More than that, she is tasked with engaging the audience and keeping the show moving forward. That is very difficult, but she makes it look easy.

TCW: What is your musical background?

JM: I began singing when I was 3 or 4 years old in my hometown church choir.

I have been singing ever since. I have a bachelor of music degree from SUNY Fredonia and a master of music degree from UNCG. I have performed in more than a dozen operas and several musicals, including Joseph… in 2005 and an off- Broadway children’s musical called “Pinkalicious: the musical” while living in NYC in 2008. I have sung in church choirs for many years as well as other choral groups and even sang at Carnegie Hall once and a few places in Italy. It has been a lot of fun to perform so many different types of music.

TCW: Who influenced you the most in your musical career?

JM: Wow, that is a tough question. I have to name 3 people. First my grandmother, who was and is a music teacher and introduced me to music as a young boy. Second, my first voice teacher who encouraged me to transfer to SUNY Fredonia and study music. Thirdly, Robert Wells, a voice professor at UNCG who

amily and food have always been synonymous in my life. As an adult every time we went home for a visit, holiday or family reunion, my mom always had one of her pound cakes waiting. This pound cake recipe had been given to her by a good family friend, Edith Matthews, who had died unexpectedly when she was in her 40’s.

Mom always said that Edith had gotten the recipe from Beth Tartan, who was the food editor of the Winston-Salem Journal. My mom is now 99 years old and unable to cook but she has given her husband, 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren a lifetime of good food and good memories.

Our cookbook means so much to me because it was a “labor of love” and it also allows my mom’s name, Louise Randleman, to be in print along with her wonderful pound cake recipe. I hope that it will bring good memories to other families as long as Be Present At Our Table is in print.

Edith Matthew’s Pound Cake

INGREDIENTS 2 sticks butter or margarine, room temperature 6 eggs ½ cup shortening, room temperature 3 cups sugar Pinch salt 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup milk Flavoring of your choice COOKING INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350º. Cream the butter/margarine and shortening. Add the sugar and the salt and mix until it is blended. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Alternately add flour and milk, beginning and ending with the flour. Bake in a greased and floured 10˝ tube pan. Bake at 350º for 1½ hours. Test the cake after 1 hour, 20 minutes. Allow the cake to cool for 5-10 minutes before taking out of the pan.

Yields 16-20 servings.

FROSTING 1 stick margarine (can use less than a whole stick) 8 ounces cream cheese 1 box powdered sugar 1 teaspoon flavoring to match your cake flavor Cream together margarine, cream cheese, and powdered sugar.

Add flavoring.

Foundations at 4½ Street Receives 5 Stars

oundations at 4 ½ Street Centenary Child Care Center has been awarded the 5 Star License from the North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education!!!!!!!

February, three classrooms were observed for four hours by state assessors for quality practices and we scored very well in each of these classrooms. On March 13, our licensing consultant performed the final Star rating assessment visit to finalize staff education points, enhanced program standards and other quality practices.

This license took effect the date of our inspection, March 13, 2013 although we just received the official license. If you were enrolled at Foundations a few years ago you may remember that the Foundations parent committee and the Foundations Board of Directors voted to not actively pursue the Star rating.

We elected not to have one of the assessments conducted due to building renovations at the time which would cause our scores to be low and without doing the assessment we could only score as high as 3 Stars. Since the program was providing the highest quality of care and our enrollment was full with a wait list, it was decided that the 3 Star rating did not have a negative impact on the Center. There were also items of the Star rating that did not align with our Christian programming and we were not willing to compromise our program to meet certain standards that might give us a better score overall.

Every three years, licensed Child Care Centers are required to renew their star rating and 2013 was Foundations time to renew. We have been working over the last year with consultants to prepare for the Star rating assessment and I have been meeting with our licensing consultant preparing the necessary documentation and paperwork for the rating. Last November, the Parent Committee hosted the first annual silent auction which raised $2,000 which we used to purchase items that would help our scores for the assessment. In

-Foundations offers an infrastructure of parent involvement including a parent committee, parent events, and opportunities

for parents to serve on the Board of Directors.

-Foundations also follows lower teacher to child ratios.

We are very proud of all of the staff here at Foundations and the hard work and dedication it has taken to get the program to this point! While we offer the same high level of care as before the 5 Star rating, we are pleased to have the Star rating more accurately reflect the quality of care and education that is offered at Foundations at 4 ½ Street Centenary Child Care Center!

Make a Difference at Centenary Have you ever thought about endowing your annual gift to the church forever? We refer to an Estate or Current Legacy Gift to Centenary that will endow your annual gift long after your lifetime. There are many ways to accomplish this. The simplest is to leave a bequest in your will amounting to approximately 20 times your annual gift. (Example: Annual Gift=$1000. Estate gift of $20,000 x 5% return = $1000 annually forever.)There are also creative ways to accomplish the same things with current giving, some of which can have immediate tax advantages.

The Centenary Fund is the church’s non-restricted legacy fund. Annually the church allocates 5% of the past 12 quarter’s average fund balance as income into the church’s annual operating budget. The larger this fund grows the more contributions to budget the church benefits from each year. Thus building the principle balance of this fund is advantageous to all aspects of the church and a priority for increasing the long term strength of Centenary.

Want to be more specific with your Legacy Giving? There are many ways to creatively endow certain programs.

Think of having sufficient endowed funds that would fund programs such as Love Thy Neighbor, Stephen Ministry, Guest Lecturers, Sacred Music, Loaves & Fishes, Vacation Bible School, etc.

Two Families at Centenary

Over the Years

L

ast fall, as renovation of our historic sanctuary was nearing completion, several of us were getting a sneak preview of the changes which had been taking place since July. As we were admiring the newly painted walls, the refinished pews, and the beautiful new light fixtures, my wife Susan and I joined a conversation with Minnie Louise Smith and Gene Wilson. We were interested to learn that both Minnie Louise and Gene had been present as children when the cornerstone of our church was laid on May 4, 1930. Gene was ten years old at the time and remembered it was a bright sunny day and there were lots of speeches. He and the rest of the Wilson family were still attending the old Centenary Methodist Church at Sixth and Liberty Street which was now merging with West End Methodist Episcopal Church, South, located at Brookstown Avenue and West

Fourth Street. Minnie Louise was eight years old and recalled that it was a hot afternoon and she didn’t want to come to the ceremony, but came anyway at the insistence of her parents, Ernest and Eva Loman Westmoreland.

Minnie Louise and her parents were also still attending the old Centenary Methodist Church.

West End Methodist Episcopal Church had been created in 1909 as an outgrowth of old Centenary Methodist to meet the needs of the growing population in the western part of the city. The initial congregation consisted primarily of members from old Centenary, who lived west of Spring Street. After about eighteen years as separate churches, the two churches agreed to merge in October 1927, with plans to build a new church at a location yet to be determined. In December 1928, Mr. and Mrs. Bowman Gray donated the land on Fifth Street and James G. Hanes was appointed chairman of the Building Committee. Gene Wilson’s father, Peter T. Wilson,

was a member of the Building Committee. Gene recalled that his father respected Jim Hanes as a strong leader for the committee.

The construction contract was awarded on October 17, 1929, twelve days before the stock market crash which preceded the Great Depression. With virtually every church member participating based on their means, and with considerable assistance from prominent business men who were also church members, financing was arranged and construction began.

The cornerstone was laid on May 4, 1930. Mrs. Bowman Gray, assisted by Mr. James G. Hanes, placed the stone. The first services were held in the new Centenary Methodist sanctuary on Fifth Street on September 20, 1931.

Minnie Louise was in the first confirmation class which joined the new church on Palm Sunday 1932. The old and current Centenary Methodist Churches have been a constant part of Minnie Louise’s life. She was baptized at old Centenary and was part of the Cradle Roll Class, where she met Mary Ann (Paschal) Parrish. They became best friends and remain so today.

Minnie Louise and her parents lived on North Liberty Street with her grandmother, Mrs. Charles Loman, close to Fairview Moravian Church. They spent many weekends and summer days at her father’s family farm in the Oak Summit community.

Minnie Louise attended North Elementary and then graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1938. She entered Salem College in 1938 and graduated

in 1942 with a major in French and a minor in German. She went on to Richmond Professional Institute where she studied interior decorating. Following college Minnie Louise joined Morris Early Furniture as an interior decorator. After thirteen years with Morris, she worked as a free-lance decorator.

In the late 1940s, Minnie Louise Westmoreland met Vernon Smith from Charleston, S. C. Vernon had moved to Winston-Salem to join First National Bank as a trust officer. He had already joined Centenary before the two were introduced during a business meeting, associated with Vernon’s duties as a trust officer and her duties as a decorator. They were married in 1949 and took up residence on the Westmoreland Farm near Oak Summit where they lived until his death in 1979.

Minnie Louise’s father had been on the Board of Stewards at Centenary and was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. He was also a “collector” during church services. At that time the church had “collectors” to take up collection and “ushers” to escort attendees to their seats.

Minnie Louise’s mother, Eva, was a member of the Women’s Fellowship Sunday School Class and was also an active Circle member. Over the years, Minnie Louise has followed her parents’ example of being active in church organizations. Among other involvements, she has been a member of the Board of Stewards, Council on Ministries, United Methodist Women, Altar Guild, Chairperson of Senior Adults, Secretary of United Methodist Women, and Circle Leader for

forty years. For a number of years, she also organized trips for seniors.

Gene Wilson is the second oldest of four brothers, Peter Jr., Albert and Howard. Gene and his older brother Peter Jr. became confirmed members of old Centenary Methodist Church on May 11, 1930, about a week after the cornerstone was laid for the new Centenary. The Wilson family was living at 238 Halcyon Avenue in the West Highland neighborhood of Winston-Salem.

Gene was in the fifth grade at Wiley School. The Wilson boys were active in the Boy Scouts at Centenary where Gene earned the coveted rank of Eagle Scout.

Gene graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1936, two years earlier than Minnie Louise. He went on to Brevard College for one year before transferring to Duke University, where he graduated with a degree in business in 1940. During his time at Duke, Gene was elected to serve as secretary of the student government.

Reacting to signs of the United States becoming involved in the war already raging in Europe, Gene joined the Naval Reserve in July 1941. In January 1942, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Gene was ordered to active duty.

After attending Midshipman School at Northwestern University in Chicago and receiving his commission, Gene was transferred to Newport, Rhode Island for PT boat training. After completing his training in Newport, he was transferred to a duty station in New Orleans. He was there

for about a year before being assigned to a PT boat squadron.

The squadron left Norfolk, Virginia, in February 1943 on a Navy tanker with four PT boats on the deck, bound for Oran, North Africa. Upon arriving in Oran, the PT boats were unloaded and the crews ran the boats to Corsica, arriving in March 1943.

Gene spent the remainder of the war commanding a torpedo armed PT boat, patrolling the waters off the coast of western Italy. His squadron’s mission was to harass and disrupt German war and cargo shipments along the Italian coast from Genoa to Leghorn.

After being discharged from the Navy in 1946, Gene returned to Winston-Salem and joined Western Electric as an accountant.

He also re-joined a local Naval Reserve unit, attending training sessions on weekends. In February 1951, during the Korean conflict, Gene received orders from the Navy to report to San Francisco for active duty. Within days, he was shipped to the Philippines, where he served two years of shore duty before being deactivated and returning to Winston-Salem. Gene eventually retired from the Naval Reserve on July 1, 1973, with the rank of Captain.

As our youth celebrate confirmation, I journeyed up to the fourth floor to see what interesting things I could find. Upon arriving, I walked in to the Prayer Room.

This sacred space was filled with holding crosses, prayer benches and pillows. Each item invited me to linger and spend time reflecting upon my own spiritual journey.

These elements, each important to the comfirmation process, illustrate the importance of the daily walk with Christ as we humble ourselves in his presence. If you have never been to the Prayer Room, take a moment and visit. You will be transformed.

Torchbearers and Crucifers in

Worship

S

ince our renovated sanctuary opened on November 18, Centenary’s children and youth have enjoyed a new opportunity for worship leadership—4th through 6th graders serve as torchbearers, while youth in 7th grade and up can serve as crucifers.

Crucifers and torchbearers lead both the procession and recession in the 11:00 traditional service. The crucifer enters first with the cross; symbolically, this indicates that everyone in the procession follows the cross of Christ. After the crucifer come the two torchbearers; they carry candles which symbolize the light of Christ. When our crucifers and torchbearers bring these objects into the sanctuary during the opening procession, we are reminded that Christ is present with us in worship. When they carry these objects out during the closing recession, we remember to carry the message of Christ into the world.

The children and youth who have served in these roles are enjoying their new duties. Will Schomberg, one of our first torchbearers, said, “As a torchbearer, I feel I am an important part of the worship service. I especially enjoy being a torchbearer during the holiday seasons.”

That excitement has proven contagious, and will hopefully have benefits for years to come. “Our younger children are looking up to the crucifers and torchbearers and learning how to enter into worship,” said Lynn. “They are looking forward to the day that they can serve and be involved in ‘big church.’”

Adults continue to act as crucifers at the 8:45 service. The long-serving individuals from the 11:00 service have been tremendous mentors and examples for the children and youth. They have graciously given our younger members the opportunity to lead and worship, and they have helped to train our new torchbearers and crucifers by modeling worship leadership.

Lynn Lilley, who has helped coordinate our torchbearers and crucifers, notes that the program has benefits for both our children and the congregation: “Our young people are eagerly learning about the church and growing in their faith through their understanding and service.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY Children’s Worship and Nursery Care We offer children’s worship each Sunday during the 11 am worship service. After beginning as a part of the larger worship service with their families, kindergarten through third grade are invited to join Rev. Kate May in the Dining Room. Children will return to the Sanctuary after the sermon. Parents are asked to pick up their children from their reserved pews once worship concludes. Attending children’s worship is optional; children are always welcome to remain in the adult worship service.

Nursery care for infants through prekindergarten is offered during every Sunday morning worship service. During the 11:00 am worship service, 3’s and 4’s in the nursery have a time of engaged Bible storytelling led by children’s ministry staff. Our nursery classrooms, staffed by professional childcare workers, are located on the second floor of the children’s building.

We will be on the campus of the Children’s Home for three days of service projects, games, Bible study and team building activities.

Vacation Bible School July 28 - August 1

God’s Transforming Grace

enry Nouwen, a great Christian contemporary, offers an understanding of the body of Christ when he writes in Reaching Out that the church confirms persons by offering a supportive space in which each can develop his or her relationship with God. When the Christian church provides this sort of hospitality, it confirms its members by supporting their journeys of faith and providing a context in which that faith can be examined, tested and strengthened.

filled with questions and prayer, meetings and time with their Shepherds. It is a chance to search and grow and try to understand the holiness of God and how our belief in Him changes the very way we live our lives. May 19th at the 11am service our class will stand before the church and profess their faith, remember their baptisms, and proclaim Jesus as their savior. It will be a beautiful gift to their hearts and ours. I hope you will come and be a part of this wonderful day in the life of our church and see the glory of God in the faces of all our youth whose lives have been changed by their encounter with the Holy.

Confirmation has been, and still is, a continuation of the Baptismal Covenant. This is not to say that Holy Baptism has something missing, nor does baptism depend upon confirmation for a 2nd dose of grace. Rather, confirmation is the response of the people to God’s transforming grace. With that said, the faith formation process begins with Holy Baptism, continues with Confirmation, and then stretches onward into adulthood with mentoring. It also needs to be said how important it is for all people to belong to Christ and to belong to the Church body before they join the church. Becoming a member of the church is an outward sign of an inward change in the way one lives their life. Joining the church is not the beginning of the journey, but a response to the change in one’s life.

Each spring, I have the great joy of walking beside our 7th graders in their faith formation process called Confirmation. It is a time
