RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS

THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST • JUNE 14, 2026 • 11:00AM

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS

Welcome to worship at Centenary! We are a church for everyone. As you prepare for worship, we invite you to greet your neighbor and share the love of Christ. Please silence all mobile communication devices.

PRELUDE

Aria — Paul Manz

GREETING

INTROIT

O Lord, Hear My Prayer — TAIZÉ

O Lord, hear my prayer. When I call answer me. O Lord, hear my prayer. Come and listen to me.

†CALL TO WORSHIP

We gather in the presence of the God who saves. Praise the Lord, for God is mighty to deliver!

When the storms rage and the waters close in, God does not abandon us. Out of the depths we cry, and God hears us!

The Lord is the God who acts — who provides, rescues, and restores. Deliverance belongs to the Lord!

Let us bring our thanksgiving and praise, for God is worthy. Blessed be the name of the Lord!

†HYMN OF PROCESSION

#181 Ye Servants of God — HANOVER

†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation or distress, or persecution or famine, or nakedness or peril or sword?

No! In all things we are more than conquerors through the One who loved us. We are sure that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Thanks be to God! Amen.

† GLORIA PATRI

#71 Glory Be to the Father — GREATOREX

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

BAPTISM

BAPTISMAL RESPONSE

Do you as Christ’s body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ? We do.

Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include this family, now before you, in your care?

We give thanks for all that God has already given you and welcome you in Christian love. With God’s help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. We will surround Jackson with a community of love and forgiveness, that he may grow in his service to others. We will pray for him, that he may be a true disciple who walks in the way that leads to life.

HYMN

#191 Jesus Loves Me — JESUS LOVES ME

(Following the baptism, children, kindergartners through third grade, are invited to exit the Sanctuary for Children’s Worship. Children will return to reserved pews in the Sanctuary at the close of worship.)

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED

SCRIPTURE — Jonah 1:17-Jonah 2:1-10

This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON — “In the Belly of a Whale”

WE RENEW OUR COMMITMENT

OFFERTORY

I Need Thee Every Hour — Earlene Rentz I need thee every hour, most gracious Lord. No tender voice like thine can peace afford. I need thee, O I need thee; every hour I need thee; O bless me now, bless me now, I come to thee. I need thee every hour, in joy or pain; come quickly and abid, or life is vain. I need the every hour, teach me thy will; and thy rich promises in me fulfill.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE

Stephen Ministers Are Here for You

We sometimes go through difficult times in life when we need extra care and comfort. Stephen Ministers have been trained to provide confidential, one-to-one, Christian support. They will listen, encourage, and pray with you and for you and provide consistent care. Contact Rev. Oliver Helsabeck for a referral for yourself or for someone you know who needs this caring relationship and support. For additional information and for a link to a referral form, visit the Stephen Ministry page under Congregational Care on the church website.

The Refresh Prayer Ministry invites you to be refreshed in a mid-week service of worship, reflection, and prayer in a sacred space. Parking is available in the Fifth Street parking lot; enter from the Fifth Street entrance to the Sanctuary. For more information, contact Rev. Oliver Helsabeck or Becky Tate.

MEN’S MINISTRY

Men of Centenary...We Need Your Input!

We are exploring ways to strengthen and grow our Men’s Ministry, and we need your input. We invite all men in our congregation to complete a brief survey to help us better understand your interests, needs, and priorities.

Whether you are actively involved in church activities or looking for new ways to connect, your feedback will help shape future Bible studies, fellowship events, service projects, retreats, and other ministry opportunities.

Your responses will help us build a Men’s Ministry that encourages spiritual growth, meaningful relationships, and faithful service. Scan the QR code to be linked to our events website page and find the survey link under Men’s Ministry

MISSIONS

Fall Mission Opportunity

There’s more work to do! As we go about our daily lives, there are people in Western NC who are still struggling with the devastation of Hurricane Helene. Centenary is planning to help the week of October 25. We will be heading north to Ashe County to work on homes. If you would like to be a part of this team, mark your calendar and look for future info and sign-ups. If you can only come for a few days, that’s ok as well. All levels of skill can be used so don’t be afraid to sign up to share Christ’s love through our caring actions. Questions? Contact John Markle.

Summer Stock Is Back!

We need YOUR help to fill our shelves for neighbors in need. This summer, we’re collecting regular-sized cans of chicken, beef stew, Spam, Vienna sausages, and packaged cookies. Simply pick up a shopping bag at the church and bring your donations or you can scan the QR code from the shopping bag list and you will be directed to our Amazon shopping cart. Those items will be shipped directly to the church. Together, we can make a difference and ensure no one goes hungry this summer. Thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus in our community!

Two by two, the campers are coming and we need your help! Love to work with kids? We are seeking adult and youth volunteers to serve as counselors, crossing guards, room assistants, and activity helpers during camp week. Only able to help from afar?

Provide a day’s worth of snacks to fuel our campers as they sing, ring, paint, play, and explore the story of Noah’s ark! Contact Virginia Sheffield (vsheffield@ centenary-ws.org) for more information on these opportunities to support Children’s Music & Arts Ministry!
