WE GATHER AS GOD'S PEOPLE VOLUNTARY

Come, Holy Spirit, Lord God — Dietrich Buxtehude

GREETING INTROIT

CALL TO WORSHIP Hymn of Glory Codex Alexandrius, 4th Cent. †

Awake, My Heart — Jane M. Marshall Awake, my heart, and render to God thy sure defender, thy maker, thy preserver, a song of love and fervor. Confirm my deeds and guide me: my day, with thee beside me, beginning, middle, ending, will all be upward tending. My heart shall be thy dwelling, with joy and gladness swelling; thy word my nurture given to bring me on toward heaven. Glory to God on high, and peace on earth to all of good will. We praise you. We bless you. We adore you. We glorify you. We give you thanks for your great glory O Lord, Our Celestial King, All-Powerful God, The Savior, The Only Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, Who washes away the sins of the world, Have mercy on us, hear our prayer. You who sit at the right hand of the Father, Have mercy on us. For only you are holy. You alone are Lord, Jesus Christ, To the glory of God the Father. Amen.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Please stand as you are able.

#64 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord, God Almighty — NICAEA We believe in the one God, creator and sustainer of all things, Father of all nations, the source of all goodness and beauty, all truth and love. We believe in Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, our teacher, example, and Redeemer, the Savior of the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit, God present with us for guidance, for comfort, and for strength. We believe in the forgiveness of sins, in the life of love and prayer, and in grace equal to every need. We believe in the Word of God contained in the Old and New Testaments as the sufficient rule both of faith and of practice. We believe in the church, those who are united in the living Lord for the purpose of worship and service. We believe in the reign of God as the divine will realized in human society, and in the family of God, where we are all brothers and sisters. We believe in the final triumph of righteousness and in the life everlasting. Amen. 3

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. #420 Breathe on Me, Breath of God — TRENTHAM (Children, kindergartners through third grade, are invited to exit the Sanctuary for Children’s Worship. Children will return to reserved pews in the Sanctuary at the close of worship.)

GOD'S WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE

Lord, I Want to Be a Christian — Traditional Spiritual, arr. Moses Hogan Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart. Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart. Lord, I want to be like Jesus. Lord, I want to be more holy. Lord, I want to be a Christian.

SCRIPTURE Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.) So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?” He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’ You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.” Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.” (CEB) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

OFFERTORY

The Size of Your Heart — Eleanor Daly The size of your heart is the size of your life, for out of your heart comes the kind of your life. The way you reach out to the world all around is first in your heart to be found. So if in your heart there is plenty of room, for love and compassion to come into bloom; their fragrance flows out through all that you do, healing the hurt and making new.

DOXOLOGY

Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow — OLD 100th Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

God of Abundance, we thank you for your gifts that enrich our lives; friends and family, health and safety, food to fill us and compassion to warm us. Lord of all that is good, fill our hearts with love, and as we love you in our hearts help us to allow your blessings to flow through us. Give us strength and courage to not follow the crowd, instead let us live with determination and desire to reveal our trust and faith in you so that through our actions we transmit your love and extend the boundaries of your kingdom. Amen.
