Who’s Who:

Wilson County’s Information Technology Industry

A partial list of IT companies17 residing and operating in Wilson County is given in Table 3. With several notable exceptions, most of WC’s IT businesses are small enterprise firms that offer a wide variety of computer support services to both consumers and general small business. The growing presence of many small IT companies in Wilson County is a healthy sign of a vibrant and forward moving county economy 18 .

Computer/cell phone repair is an important IT service noted in Table 3 as are Internet related services such as web design, online marketing and web site hosting. Also included are several companies which offer expert consultation services in data security and data recovery, telecommunications network design and industry specific software development.

While WC’s mid to large computer service companies tend to market themselves regionally or nationally, small IT enterprises typically focus on local clientele and provide an essential IT outsourcing option for firms in WC, especially for area small businesses.

Amazon is not new to Wilson County but there may be a potential paradigm shift in WC’s IT industry related to this major e-commerce player.

It has been confirmed that Internet giant Amazon has purchased land to build a large state-ofthe-art 3.6 million square foot distribution facility in Mt. Juliet, capable of processing hundreds of millions of online orders, in the coming years19 . According to statements made during the approval process, the new facility is expected to add several thousand jobs to the company’s existing operations in Wilson County. Job types were described by Amazon representatives as being “world-class” high tech and “next generation” and would include fulfillment, tech, robotics, logistics and managerial white collar positions. A major expansion of the world’s largest Internet company (by revenue) in Wilson County cannot help but have a very positive general impact on WC’s IT industry.
