THE MACEBEARER The Marshall carries the Mace, the official symbol of academic authority, the meaning of which has evolved from medieval weaponry. The Mace is a symbol of the power of knowledge and the significance of a liberal arts education. At the base is a milkweed pod, representing the many directions the seeds of education travel. At the top is a globe, representing the world of lifelong learning. Cumberland University’s mace also displays a representation of the University’s special symbol, the Phoenix. The mythical bird boldly rises from the fire of ideas atop the globe. Phoenix medallions are also found on the staff of the Mace. The Mace was designed and crafted by Mr. Klaus Kallenberger, a craftsman living in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Made of cherry wood, wrought, and cast sterling silver, red jasper, and red enamel, it was a gift to the University from University Trustee Jeanette Cantrell Rudy, who passed away in 2011. It is the tradition of this University to select a person from the Cumberland community to serve as Macebearer. The Macebearer walks with the Faculty of the University and is the first person to enter the commencement chamber before the President. The tradition traces to the Macebearer’s role in protecting the President, but for Cumberland, the meaning is deeper, as it represents the special historical role played by the community in assuring the continuity of this great University.

BOB AND SUSAN MCDONALD Susan and Bob’s journey began in the fall of 1979 when they met as freshmen at the University of Tennessee, where Susan was pledging Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and Bob was pledging Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Their relationship blossomed in the spring, leading to their marriage in August 1983 after they graduated. They are the proud parents of two sons: Robert, who is engaged to Mallory Shultz, and Michael, who is married to Kate, and they have one son, Noah.

In 1995, the McDonald family moved from Nashville to Lebanon to advance Bob’s banking career. In 2003, Bob, along with seven other business and community leaders, formed CedarStone Bank. Bob served as Incorporator, Director, President and CEO until its merger with First Financial Bank in March 2026. His local and civic activities include; past president and board member of the Wilson County Community Help Center, past chairman and board member of the United Way of Wilson County, past president and board member of the Wilson County Chapter of the American Heart Association, past chairman and board member of the Lebanon and Wilson County Chamber of Commerce, past board member of the Mt. Juliet Chamber of Commerce, and past Regent and board member of the Andrew Jackson Foundation.

He was the recipient of the 2001 Wilsonian of the Year Award presented by the Mt. Juliet Chamber of Commerce, recipient of the 2004 Businessperson of the Year award, and the 2009 Friend of Education Award presented by the Lebanon and Wilson County Chamber of Commerce. Bob remains a member of the Board of Trust of Cumberland University and is a past Board Chairman. Bob is also a longtime member of the Lebanon Noon Rotary Club.

In addition to serving alongside Bob with the creation of CedarStone Bank and their previously mentioned community activities, Susan’s other professional endeavors include serving in staff positions with three different schools in the Lebanon Special School District, Practice Administrator for Cumberland Skin, and various positions with Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital, including Marketing Coordinator, Manager of Physician Recruitment, and Manager of Outpatient Services.

FACULTY AWARD FOR STUDENT EXCELLENCE The Faculty Award of Student Excellence is selected by the Faculty Senate. It is based on academic excellence, personal integrity, university and community engagement, as well as personal demeanor.

ELEANOR RUSSELL Ellie is graduating Magna Cum Laude receiving a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She is a member of the inaugural Honors Program class and is also an Honors Scholar. She is originally from Auburn, ME, and came to Cumberland University as the result of an impromptu campus tour with her grandfather. She works for the Admissions Department as a Presidential Ambassador, runs a Behavioral Statistics lab as Head Tutor, and is the current chapter President of the Psi Chi Honors Society on campus. She is interested in the behavioral health field of psychology and is currently an intern at the Regional Intervention Program in Nashville.

One of her most notable academic works is her independent research study turned Honors Capstone, which she presented at the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference in March.

She plans to stay here in Tennessee after graduation and continue working in the behavioral health field.

She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Gamma Beta Phi, and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies. She received the Excellence in Peer Tutoring Award, the President Ambassador of the Year Award, and she was voted Ms. Cumberland. Her parents are Jennifer and Dennis Russell.

THE PRESIDENT’S AWARD The President’s Award is presented to the graduate who most nearly embodies the ideals, principles, and spirit of the University. The candidates for this award are judged based on their scholastic attainment, personal bearing, integrity, leadership, moral and ethical conduct, and loyalty to the University.

JACKSON WHITMORE BONE Jackson is graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration with minors in Accounting, Computational Finance, and Non-Profit Management. He is a member of the inaugural class of the Honors program, and an Honors Scholar. His capstone project focuses on Agri-tourism, Farmland Preservation, and Agricultural Entrepreneurship. Jackson is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa honor society and was awarded the Most Outstanding Performance Award in Business Administration this year.

Jackson has been accepted into Cumberland’s Masters of Business Administration program, which will begin this fall with a focus in healthcare administration. Alongside his studies at Cumberland, he currently works full-time—and plans to continue—in his family’s senior living, real estate development, and farming businesses. He enjoys working alongside his dad, Hal, and hopes to continue that relationship in the same way his dad worked alongside his own father. Jackson’s parents are Cumberland University Trustee Hal Bone and his wife Tracey.

ALGERNON SYDNEY SULLIVAN AWARD The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award was established by the New York Southern Society in 1925 in memory of Mr. Sullivan, a Southerner who became a prominent lawyer, businessman, and philanthropist in New York in the late nineteenth century. The Society and carefully selected colleges and universities jointly arrange for the issue of medallions which are to be perpetual reminders of Algernon Sydney Sullivan, the memory of whose life has been handed down with loving and grateful admiration as one that was ever encouraging and inspiring; they justify our highest ideals and hopes. These prestigious awards for excellence of character and service to humanity are being presented by Cumberland University at the 2026 Commencement Exercises to the following recipients:

LESLIE ELIZABETH (LIZ) DAVIS Liz is graduating Magna Cum Laude receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and Accounting. Liz is a member of the inaugural class of the Honors Program, her capstone project is Campus Operations, Improvements and Project Funding. Liz is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, freshmen honor society and Gamma Beta Phi, service honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa, Delta Mu Delta, and the Philomathian Society. She served as the Vice President of Student Government 20242025. She is a member of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority.

Liz was also a student Alumni Ambassador, a member of the JV Women’s Soccer team, and served on the Heifner Martin Speaker Series Committee. She is a recipient of the Calvin and Jean King Foundation Award, the Bass Memorial Scholarship, and the Lancaster-Tubb Memorial Scholarship.

Liz is from Alexandria, Tennessee, her mother is Shannon Allison, and her father and stepmother are Whit and Beth Davis.

MADDOX JAMES MARLIN Maddox is graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English. He is a member of the inaugural class of the Honors Program. His Capstone project is Research in Southern Literature throughout the last century.

Maddox served on the Student Government Association for four years. He held four different positions including President for the 2024-2025 academic year as well as Vice President during the 2025-2026 academic year. Maddox is the President of the Philomathian Society. He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Tau Delta honor societies. Maddox has served as a Student Alumni Ambassador and a Presidential Ambassador.

He was voted Mr. Cumberland and was awarded the Presidential Ambassador of the Year, Living Your Ritual for Sigma Chi Fraternity and received the Oakley School of Humanities, Education, and the Arts Award in English. In addition to all these accomplishments he worked to re-establish The Cumberland Chronicle, the student newspaper.

Maddox plans to continue his studies in literature and attend graduate school. He is from Hendersonville, Tennessee. His parents are Carrie and Bryan Marlin.

TERESA CHASTEEN-DUNN, PH.D. AND LANNY DUNN Teresa Chasteen-Dunn earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Tennessee and completed a post-doctoral program in education policy and governance at Harvard University.

She worked at Roane State as an assistant professor and later taught at Pellissippi State, Hiwassee College and in the graduate program at Tennessee Tech University at their satellite campus in Roane County.

Teresa started WIN Learning in 1996 and is celebrating 30 years as CEO this year. More than 10 million learners have participated in WIN Learning’s programs. WIN has clients in all 50 states and 10 countries, and the company has won numerous national awards for its education and workforce solutions in recent years.

She is heavily involved in the community and in ministry and nonprofit work, including raising funds for TOMS Shoes which resulted in a Guinness World Record. Teresa climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2012 to raise funds for Treasures of Africa AIDS Orphanage. Teresa received the Makers Award in 2023.

Teresa currently is Chair of the Mustard Seed Ranch Board of Directors, a director on the Tennessee Tech University Foundation Board, a Trustee for Tennessee Tech University, and a Trustee for the Board of Trust here at Cumberland University.

William Landon “Lanny” Dunn is a philanthropist and businessman based in Cookeville, Tennessee, and best known for his longstanding involvement in the automotive industry. He was the founder and CEO of Cumberland Auto Center, which has served the Upper Cumberland and Middle Tennessee region for decades.

Originally from Virginia, Lanny graduated from East Tennessee State University with the career goal of becoming a coach. However, upon graduation, he began a career in sales, where he eventually became a prominent local business owner in Cookeville who has contributed significantly to the economic growth of the community by employing thousands of individuals over the last 35+ years.

Lanny Dunn is recognized for his philanthropy to many worthy causes such as the Mustard Seed Ranch, Life Church and higher education initiatives including multiple endowed scholarships to institutions in Virginia and Tennessee, as well as the gift of Golden Eagle Golf Course to Tennessee Tech University.

Teresa and Lanny have four children and 7 grandchildren.

PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE The President’s Award for Teaching Excellence is presented each year to a faculty member who has made a significant difference in the lives of our students. Nominations are made by the graduating class.

STUART E. HARRIS, D.A. Stuart Harris joined the Cumberland University faculty in 1997. Before that, he taught English at Hunters Lane Comprehensive High School in Nashville for 11 years. In addition to both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Belmont University, Dr. Harris holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from the University of North Carolina and a Doctor of Arts degree from Middle Tennessee State University.

His teaching responsibilities at the university include Composition, Sophomore Literature, and American Literature. In the past, he has taught a seminar course on the short stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe and a course on the fiction of William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor as well as courses on Southern Literature, Writing Fiction, and the American Novel Since World War II. His greatest pleasure as a teacher is helping students discover their own writing voices and being present as they examine their beliefs through the discussion of literature.

Dr. Harris has published poetry in a number of small literary magazines, a story in South Dakota Literary Review, and a story in an anthology of Tennessee writers. He has also published a review of Clyde Edgerton’s novel Where Trouble Sleeps and an article on teaching World Literature in an interdisciplinary context in Tennessee English Journal. He is currently working on a number of short stories and poems, as well as two critical articles—one on “Rappaccini’s Daughter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne and another on Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor.

Dr. Harris has served at Cumberland in several capacities, including Faculty Senate President from 2000-2001 and chair of the Professional Development Committee from 2008-2010. He served as the Program Director for English from 2006-2024.

ALUMNI AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE The Awards of Excellence are presented to Cumberland University graduates who have attained a significant level of achievement in their chosen field. Nominees demonstrate a positive impact on local, state, or national/international level and must be of high integrity and character. These awards are presented in separate categories which represent the three academic schools of Cumberland.

These prestigious awards for excellence by the Cumberland University Alumni Association are presented to the following recipients:

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN THE OAKLEY SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES, EDUCATION, AND THE ARTS ALICE DOROTHY SULLIVAN Alice is a #1 bestselling Wall Street Journal ghostwriter, New York Times bestselling editor (12 times over), and speaker. She has ghostwritten or collaborated on 70 books and edited over 1,300 titles.

Her latest book about the business of ghostwriting, The Definitive Guide to Ghostwriting, with coauthor Alee Anderson, was published on October 14, 2025. She specializes in memoir, business leadership, self-help, and personal growth. Her clients include thought leaders, speakers, educators, entrepreneurs, professional athletes, CEOs, and creatives.

She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Cumberland University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a triple minor in English, Anthropology, and Sociology. She played tennis and soccer all 4 years on scholarship. While at Cumberland University, she received the prestigious Laura Cooke Scholarship and was the 2001 recipient of the Lindsey Donnell Award. Cumberland University has had a profound impact on her life and career.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN THE LABRY SCHOOL OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND BUSINESS HEATHER LANDERS A lifelong resident of Lebanon with a deep-rooted passion for this community. Heather is a 1999 graduate of Lebanon High School. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Cumberland University in 2003.

Heather Landers’ journey is a testament to the power of dedication and wellness. In 2017, she combined her business expertise with her passion for health to open Hot Yoga Lebanon. What began as a personal practice has grown into a premier 4,000-square-foot wellness hub for our city.

Through her studio, Heather provides her community with the tools they need to be successful and healthy, both mentally and physically.

Beyond her business, Heather has been a devoted supporter of our university. She has spent several years serving on the Phoenix Ball committee, and in 2023, she and her husband, Greg, served as the Phoenix Ball Chairs, leading our signature gala to incredible success for student scholarships.

Heather has been married to Greg for 24 years, and together they have one son, Chadwick Wilson Landers.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN THE RUDY SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS MICHELLE ZUERCHER Michelle Zuercher is a dedicated nurse educator and two-time graduate of Cumberland University, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2014 and her Master of Science in Nursing in Executive Leadership and Administration in 2020. Her commitment to caring for patients and the nursing profession was solidified through her clinical practice; after navigating the challenges of the COVID19 pandemic as a frontline nurse and graduate student, Michelle’s resilience led her to recognize that nursing education was the most powerful way to have a positive impact on healthcare.

Currently a nursing instructor at Cumberland University, Michelle’s leadership has been recognized at the state level. She was named a "Rising Star Nurse Leader" by the Tennessee Hospital Association in 2023 and demonstrates professionalism and integrity through her service as Secretary for her chapter of the Tennessee Nurses Association. Deeply committed to the Cumberland community, she also serves as an officer for the university's chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. A champion for life-long learning, Michelle holds a Post-Master’s Certificate in Nursing Education from Vanderbilt University and is currently pursuing a DNP in Leadership and Innovation at Belmont University.

Beyond the classroom, Michelle embodies the value of service through her work in transcultural nursing. First introduced to medical mission work as a Cumberland student under the leadership of Dr. Beth Chatham in 2014, Michelle has returned to serve the people of Honduras nearly every year since. Honoring the mentorship that shaped her career, Michelle partnered with Dr. Chatham to reintroduce the transcultural nursing course at Cumberland in 2023. Since then, she has mentored nearly 30 students on these missions, providing excellent evidence-based care to over 2,000 patients. Michelle’s career truly exemplifies the vision of the Rudy School of Nursing through her unwavering dedication to excellence and the future of the profession.

RISING PHOENIX AWARD The Rising Phoenix Award recognizes alumni thirty-five years of age or younger who display outstanding leadership qualities and have exceptional achievement early in their careers, through public service, and/or volunteer activities. This prestigious award is being presented by the Cumberland University Alumni Association at the 2026 Commencement Exercises to the following recipient:

JAMIE FLEMING Jamie Fleming is a lead writer, editor, and content creator at BrightRay Publishing, specializing in executive nonfiction, industry memoir, and personal growth. Since graduating from Cumberland University in 2021, with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Creative Writing, she has developed powerful narratives for multimillion-dollar clients and organizations across all industries, including IT, athletics, healthcare, marketing, and self-development, via BrightRay and her own freelance writing company. Her work has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, and Fox News, among other media and news outlets.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Cumberland University Alumni Association on an outstanding alumna or alumnus. This award salutes the achievements of outstanding alumni whose personal lives, professional achievements, and community service exemplify the objectives of their alma mater. The Distinguished Alumni Award is intended to recognize both longevity and consistency of accomplishment over one’s professional lifetime and might not be awarded annually. This prestigious award is being presented by the Cumberland University Alumni Association at the 2026 Commencement Exercises to the following recipient:

JOSHUA SEVIER, AU.D. Dr. Josh Sevier graduated from Cumberland University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.

During his time at Cumberland, he distinguished himself through both leadership and scholarship, serving as President of the Theta Prime Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, President of the PreProfessional Society, and Vice President of the Tri-Beta Society, while also participating in several additional honor societies.

Dr. Sevier received his Doctor of Audiology from Pacific University in Oregon. Today, Dr. Sevier is an assistant professor, cochlear implant audiologist, and Co-Director of the Auditory Implant Program at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. His work focuses on cochlear implants, neuroimaging of hearing loss, and innovative approaches to improving outcomes for individuals with cochlear implants.

POSTHUMOUS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD MAX H. GOLDSCHEIN, J.D. The late Max H. Goldschein, a lawyer who brought cases against organized crime figures and corrupt justices in a 24-year career in the Federal Justice Department and spanning 8 presidential administrations from Theodore Roosevelt through Lyndon B. Johnson, graduated with his law degree from Cumberland College in 1926.

Mr. Goldschein was a special assistant to the Attorney General of the United States from 1942 until 1966. In World War II, he prosecuted clothing manufacturers for fraud under Government war contracts and was passionate about prosecuting corrupt justices. After the war, he handled cases against gangsters in Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and other cities. His storied cases were well documented and profiled in many notable newspapers across the country.

In the late 1940's, he was assigned as counsel to a House of Representatives subcommittee headed

by Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, who began the investigations that were to lead to his later inquiries into organized crime as a Senate Investigations Committee chairman.

Mr. Goldschein, who settled in Tennessee after receiving his law degree from Cumberland College, practiced in Nashville and was named Attorney General of Davidson County before going to Washington.

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS MICHELE ROLLINS, J.D., LL.M. Michele Metrinko Rollins graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and Law Center, earning a B.S.F.S, a J.D., and an LL.M. in taxation. While at Georgetown, she became Miss USA and represented the United States in the Miss USA-World contest in London in 1964.

She was a staff attorney at the Securities and Exchange Commission, Division of Corporate Regulation, and she did trial tax work at the Department of Justice, Tax Division, in the US Court of Claims. Ms. Rollins went on to join EPA to serve as a Special Assistant to the Administrator.

Following a brief detail to the Federal Energy Office she became the first female “Associate Solicitor for Conservation and Wildlife” at the Department of Interior. She was then Sun Company’s Associate Counsel and Corporate Secretary.

Ms. Rollins has been admitted to the DC Bar, the DC Court of Appeals, the United States Supreme Court, the Pennsylvania State Bar, The Delaware State Bar, and is a member of the Federal Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

She is currently Chairman Emeritus of Rollins Jamaica Ltd., the holding company for Rose Hall Devs.

In 2025 she retired as CEO. She is the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the University of Delaware’s Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Management, and Lifetime Partner of the Horatio Alger Association. She is Chairman of the Board for the Rose Town Foundation, a project to regenerate a drug and violence driven community in collaboration with King Charles and The King’s Foundation.

In 1977, Ms. Rollins married John W. Rollins and had four children. She also has nine grandchildren and has been widowed since 2000.

Her many awards include Catholic Charities, Monsignor Thomas J Reese Award for outstanding service to community. The Jamaican Observer Business Leader Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to the Tourism Industry and the very fabric of Jamaica Society, Humanitarian Award, The American Friends of Jamaica, Award of Commander of Number of the Order of Civil Merit, Bestowed by the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I. National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, Ellis Island Medal of Honor for exemplifying the values of the American way of life. GRADUATION WITH HONORS The diplomas of graduating seniors will show honors categories based on the following scale: ▪ Cum Laude (with honors): 3.50 – 3.74 GPA ● Magna Cum Laude (with high honors): 3.75 – 3.89 GPA ♦ Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors) 3.90 – 4.00 GPA These honors categories are based on a student’s cumulative grade point average at the end of the Fall 2025 semester. The honors category is also based on the cumulative grade point average of all Cumberland University course work at the end of the term preceding the graduation semester.

Graduating seniors are eligible for honors after completing at least twenty-five percent of credit hours required for the degree in courses at Cumberland University.

All honor students will wear a gold cord with their academic regalia. Names appear in the Commencement Program as Candidates requested they appear on their diplomas.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY Founded in 1842, Cumberland University holds a unique place in American history as one of the oldest liberal art universities in the South. Founded by leaders of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Cumberland established a Law school, the first in Tennessee west of the Appalachian Mountains, a school of Engineering, and a school of Theology during the mid-1800s.

Cumberland was impacted by The Civil War when University Hall was burned to the ground during Union occupancy. After the destruction, a student wrote across a ruined Corinthian column the Latin word Resurgam, which translates to “I will arise.” Thus, from the ashes, the mythical phoenix became Cumberland’s enduring symbol which inspires the university to rise, endure, prosper, and illuminate the world. In 1892, Cumberland moved to its present location.

In 1946, The Tennessee Baptist Convention assumed control of the University, ending a century of operation under the Presbyterian Church. In 1956, the Board of Trust secured an amendment to the Charter, changed the institution to a private, independent corporation, and reopened the College of Arts and Sciences as a two-year institution, known as Cumberland College of Tennessee.

The Board of Trust expanded the academic programs of the Junior College in 1982. This expansion returned Cumberland to a four-year, degree-granting institution known again as Cumberland University. Its alumni include 14 governors, more than 80 members of the United States Congress, two United States Supreme Court Justices, three United States Ambassadors, a United States Secretary of State, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, and founder of the United Nations.

Today, Cumberland continues to evolve to meet the needs of a diverse and expanding community while providing a transformational higher education experience through more than 100 fully accredited academic programs of study in three distinct schools.
