WELCOME! I am delighted you have chosen to attend Cumberland University.

Transitioning to college life can be a bit overwhelming, and I want to make sure you have the tools you need to be successful throughout your college career and beyond.

Cumberland is a tight knit community, and we’re excited that you are now part of our family. This guide will help you through the process of becoming a CU student, and will be a resource for you long after the New Student Orientation days.

College is an important time in your life, and I encourage you to make the most of your time at CU. Get involved in campus events and organizations, connect with your professors and classmates, take on leadership roles and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself.

The CU community is filled with individuals who want to see you succeed, so ask questions, learn as much as you possibly can and soak it all in.

Stay Informed CU Email Cumberland uses email as the official and primary method of communication with students. As a student, you are expected to check your university email address frequently and respond to emails from professors and staff in a timely manner.

Checking your email regularly will also ensure that you do not miss any important campus announcements or events.

You should already have access to your Cumberland email account. If you do not, or are having issues logging into your account, you can email IT support at support@cumberland.edu.

CU Alerts Effective and timely communication during a campus emergency is a priority for students, faculty, and staff. The Cumberland App is designed to notify our campus community about emergencies related to the university. To make sure you receive all future alerts, you must download the Cumberland App to your smartphone or tablet and login using your Cumberland email address and password.

Make sure that your “Emergency” and “Urgent” push notifications are turned on for the CU app in your device settings.

Cumberland App The Cumberland App is your one stop shop for all things happening at CU. Make sure you download the app on your smartphone and sign in using your CU email and password.

Once in the app, you can view the campus event calendar, find direct links to student and campus services, view job and internship openings, find a campus map and get information on clubs and organizations.

Phoenix News Phoenix News is an e-newsletter sent to your Cumberland email. It contains news, announcements and special offers for our students. It is managed by the Office of Student Life and user-generated, so you can submit your own student group news and events by emailing them to phoenixnews@cumberland.edu.

CU FYI The CU FYI is the weekly e-newsletter sent to students, faculty and staff. It is sent to your Cumberland email each Monday afternoon with information on campus news, upcoming events and important information.

The Cumberland Mascot

The Phoenix is our enduring symbol to rise. In 1864 the original Memorial Hall was burned to the ground during the Civil War. In the ashes and ruins, a Cumberland student wrote the latin phrase “resergum” which translates to “I shall rise.” Our mascot is a reminder of Cumberland’s ability to rise above challenges, like the Phoenix from the ashes.

You can purchase or rent your books for the semester, and get CU gear at the CU Shop on the bottom floor of the Mitchell Student Center.

You can also order online at https://cumberland.textbooktech.com Computers & Printing

The Vise Library, Labry Hall and the Learning and Career Commons (LCC) all feature computer labs that can be used on campus. These labs are available to students for studying and completing assignments.

CU also offers students free printing each semester up to 500 copies. You can use your student ID number to access all of the printing stations which are located in the Vise Library, Labry Hall and the LCC.

PARKING Where do I park?

All new students will receive a student ID and parking decal.

Residential students will pick up decals on move-in day, and commuter students will pick up decals during orientation. Parking lots are labeled by color which corresponds with the campus parking decals. You are permitted to park in lots that match your parking decal color. You will receive a parking map when you pick up your parking decal at Residence Life.

Sometimes parking lots fill up. If you can't find a spot in your designated lot on campus, you can park at Immanuel Baptist Church, St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church, or the Alumni Hall Overflow lot off of Leeville Pike. Our shuttle service will bring you to and from campus.

Dining

The Phillip's Dining Hall features six different food stations; soup and salad bar, sandwich/wrap bar, specialty bar, hot bar, grill bar and a selfserve breakfast and dessert bar. The Barry Bistro is a smaller dining option that offers Papa John's Pizza and Mondo's Subs. There's also a Starbucks Kiosk in the LCC, as well as a grab-and-go snack kiosk in the Library.

Orientation week kicks off with new student move-in, and includes a mix of both informative sessions and fun activities to get you acquainted with your new home.

02 Convocation

The Convocation ceremony is a ritual signaling the beginning of your college career, similar to how Commencement ceremony serves as a ritual to mark the completion of your college career. You’ll hear welcoming messages and advice from university administrators, including the President, Provost and President of the Student Government Association.

Phelix is CU’s beloved mascot. You can find him at New Student Orientation, sporting events, Homecoming and more.

Every year at the Convocation ceremony, students, faculty and staff are asked to write down any fears or concerns they have about the upcoming semester, and are then asked to commit them to the flame in the fire pit. In doing this, we believe we are stronger than the trials we may face and will rise to meet our greatest potential.

Colloquium

Each fall, CU hosts an annual research colloquium for students, faculty and staff to share their academic research on a wide variety of topics. This event is a great opportunity for you to experience presenting on a topic you’re passionate about as well as hear about a variety of topics from surviving a rattlesnake bite to wedding planning.

Homecoming

For many schools, Homecoming is a savored tradition, and Cumberland is no different. Each fall, students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and community members gather to attend the Homecoming football game and see the crowning of the Homecoming Court. The weekend is full of activities and opportunities to show your CU pride.

Clock Tower

The Clock Tower is the iconic tower atop Memorial Hall, featuring a clock on each of its 12 CU Cares - Giving Back four sides. Baird Chapel is a cherished space in Memorial Hall. From the original hand-painted rice paper mural on the ceiling to the beautiful stained glass window above the pipe organ, this room holds a special place in CU history. Baird Chapel has also been used for several movies and music videos, including Taylor Swift's Love Story video.

CU uses the space for meetings, student gatherings, and special events.

Wilson County Fair

Before every home football game, our Phoenix Marching Band leads a parade of students and CU fans to Nokes-Lasater Field to cheer them on to victory.

Each fall, Lebanon hosts the Wilson County Fair, the largest county fair in the state. The fair is a must-see event, and usually occurs the week before school starts.

The Phoenix Wing 'We Rise By Lifting Others' mural was painted by double CU alum Karlie Odum Cunha.

Career Services and Internships

The Office of Career Services and Internships supports students and alumni in the development and achievement of career decisions and goals. They provide resources to enhance students’ knowledge in the areas of career exploration, job search skills, and information on employment and internship opportunities.

Counseling Services

The Office of Counseling Services provides free counseling and support services to students who want to discuss personal or psychological concerns with a professional counseling staff. Through a variety of counseling options, they help you resolve concerns and develop strategies for achieving personal and professional goals.
