AN OVERVIEW OF CAMPUS

MCCLAIN CIRCLE ENTRANCE Welcome to Cumberland University! McClain Circle is the newest addition to the campus. The entrance was funded by and dedicated to the McClain and Hatfield families who have been instrumental in the development and success of CU since its founding in 1842. In 1892, the McClain family farm became the primary site for CU's main campus and the circle now serves as the main entrance into campus and provides 60 parking spots for guests, faculty and staff.

MEMORIAL HALL Every university has its iconic buildings. For CU, it's Memorial Hall, but this building is actually the 2.0 version. The original memorial hall that stood in 1843 was burned to the ground during the civil war.

Amid its ashes and ruins, a Cumberland student wrote the latin phrase "resergum" on a charred Corinthian column which translates to "I shall rise."

These simple yet profound words inspired CU to rise from the ashes and rebuild its campus.

In 1892, Memorial Hall was rebuilt and proudly stands as the prominent landmark for CU's campus and the Lebanon community. It is listed on the National Register for Historic Places and its distinctive clocktower is Lebanon's tallest landmark. Â

DEAN'S OFFICE

The first floor hallways house the Office of Admissions, Financial Aid, and the business office.

You'll also find the Registrar, the office of the Provost, and the office of the President.

Classrooms are located on the second and third floors, along with several faculty offices.

The third floor also features newly renovated science labs.

The office of the Dean of the School of Humanities, Education and the Arts is located on the second floor.

BAIRD CHAPEL Baird Chapel is a cherished space in Memorial Hall. From the original hand-painted rice paper mural on the ceiling to the beautiful stained glass window above the pipe organ, this room holds a special place in CU history. Baird Chapel has also been used for several movies and music videos, including Taylor Swift's Love Story. CU uses the space for meetings, student gatherings, and special events.

LABRY HALL This building was built in 1963 and served as the gymnasium for CU athletic teams. In 2002, CU Alumnus Edward Labry made a donation to turn the old gymnasium into a three-level classroom building. The Labry School of Science, Business and Technology is located in Labry Hall and the Dean of the School's office is located on the main floor. The top floor has classroom and faculty offices and the bottom floor consists of computer labs, IT offices, the IT help desk and the Atrium. Â

THE DEAN OF STUDENTS The Office of the Dean of Students is located on the top floor.

THE OFFICE OF STUDENT LIFE The Office of Student Life is located in the Atrium of Labry Hall. This office helps support the 55+ student organizations and works to keep campus life fun and exciting for all our students.

THE OFFICE OF RESIDENCE LIFE & GREEK AFFAIRS Located in the Atrium of Labry Hall, the Office of Residence Life and Greek Affairs supports all our students living on campus and assists our Greek Life Organizations, which includes 5 fraternities and 3 sororities.

THE ATRIUM

Classrooms are located on all three floors of Labry Hall.

Computer labs are on the bottom floor and faculty offices, including the Dean of the Labry School of Science, Business and Technology, are located in this building.

CU students have access to a variety of free confidential counseling and therapy services through our counseling center. CU students with documented disabilities can receive accommodations through the Office of Disability Services. Both offices are located on the top floor.

The Atrium is a busy spot on campus. Students meet up to study, catch up with friends, or meet with their club or organization in this open space. It is a space you will enjoy with friends during your time at CU.

DALLAS FLOYD PHOENIX ARENA The Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena was built in 1991, courtesy of generous gifts from J.D. and Ann Floyd and Billy and Jane Baxter. The arena was dedicated to J.D. and Jane's father. The arena is where the university holds its Convocation ceremony at the beginning of each academic year and is the home court to many of CU's athletic programs. You'll find coaches offices here as well as the Director of Athletics.

SPORTS We are Phoenix! Cumberland rallies behind 22 men's and women's athletic teams that rise and compete for conference and national championships. CU is a member

of

the

NAIA

Division

1,

Mid-South

Conference and in the past five years, Cumberland has had 407 Academic All-Conference athletes, 165 All-Conferece athletes, and 37 All-American athletes.

CU's

baseball

team

has

won

three

national

championships, and CU's wrestling team has posted three individual national titles. Whether in the game or in the stands, you become part of a winning team!

STUDENT EVENTS As a CU student, you get free access to student events and athletic events. From dodgeball to silent discos, you'll make lots of memories and friends at student events. The arena is also where we hold an annual Research Colloquium each fall. The arena is open to students until 10pm each night. Â

BONE HALL Bone Hall was built in 1938. It has served as a women's residence hall, military headquarters, and a hospital. During World War II, the Second Army chose CU for its Maneuver Director Headquarters, and Bone Hall was the message center. The building was used during the Maneuvers from September 1942 until March 1944. During this time, General George Patton lived in Bone Hall. Today, Bone Hall houses administrative and faculty offices, classrooms and conference rooms.

LEARNING & CAREER COMMONS The Learning and Career Commons is a popular spot on campus. Once a residence hall in the 1960's, the LCC was transformed into a communal center where students come to study, meet, hang out or grab a Starbucks coffee. The LCC is open late to ensure you have a spot to work on group projects and prepare for your exams. Oh yeah, did we mention there's coffee?

STUDENT RETENTION AND TN PROMISE SUPPORT The Office of Student Retention and TN Promise Support is located on the second floor of the LCC. They

help

you

stay

engaged,

find

volunteer

opportunities and connect you with resources to help you succeed.

CAREER SERVICES & INTERNSHIPS Internships are an important part of preparing for the workforce. Career services is located on the second floor and is there to help you get ready to launch you career.

OFFICE OF STUDENT SUCCESS The Office of Student Success is located on the first floor of the LCC. They oversee all of the tutoring and Writing Center services to help you succeed in every subject.

PHOENIX PLAZA The Phoenix Plaza is located at the corner of Leeville Pike and South Maple Street. Just a short walk away from the main campus, Phoenix Plaza is home to CU art studios, the CU Marching Band room, Track and Field coaches offices, and the CU Athletics weight room.

JEANETTE C. RUDY SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS

The Jeanette C. Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions is located off the main CU campus in McFarland Hall at 500 Park Avenue. The nursing school is fully equipped with classrooms, nursing labs, meeting rooms, and a student lounge. Offices of Nursing faculty and the school's Dean are also located here.

MITCHELL STUDENT CENTER The Mitchell Student Center is a hub of activity. The center houses the Phillips Dining Hall, the Bistro, the mailroom, the Phoenix Nest Recreational room, the Blackbox Theater Lab and the Commuter's Lounge. Needless to say, there is something for everyone at the MSC.

PHILLIPS DINING HALL A meal plan is included for all CU students who live on campus and commuter students have the option to purchase a meal plan. The dining hall features five different

food

stations;

soup

and

salad

bar,

sandwich/wrap bar, specialty bar, hot bar, grill bar and a self-serve breakfast and dessert bar.

THE BISTRO The Bistro is a smaller dining option that offers Papa John's Pizza and Mondo's Subs, and features CU students original artwork.

BLACK BOX THEATER LAB The Black Box Theater Lab is a small theater that seats up to 30 people. The Black box offers CU Fine Arts students a space where they can explore the elements of theater production while audiences can enjoy an intimate performance.

COMMUTER LOUNGE

The Nest can be accessed at the rear of the building. It offers students a place to shoot pool, play a foosball game with friends or just hang out in between classes.

The Phoenix Wings Student Mural was painted by Allie Garcia, a CU student who wanted to leave something special for all students to enjoy. It is a popular photo spot on campus.

The Commuter Lounge is another great lounge space where students can relax, study, or meet with friends while on campus.

HEYDEL FINE ARTS CENTER Built in 1997, the Heydel Fine Arts Center is a concert hall with 250 theater seats. Students can participate in the fall and spring plays, or be in the spring musical. The center also hosts CU's choir and musical concerts. The lobby also features the Adam's Art Gallery, which was donated by the Thackston Family Foundation. CU students have free admission to all CU performances.

VISE LIBRARY The Vise Library was built in 1989. The library features several conference rooms, private study rooms, and a variety of meeting spaces where students can study and work together. The library is home to the Castle Heights Military Academy exhibit and is open for the community to enjoy. It also features a grab and go snack shop and the campus Pride Shop where you can purchase all your CU apparel and gear. The Martin Van Buren Presidential Papers project is also housed in the library.

RESOURCES The library features 40,000+ volumes plus an additional 45,000 full-text ebooks. Students have access to an inter-library service where students can check out books from other libraries for free.

COMPUTERS AND PRINTING The library features a computer lab and individual computer stations for studying and completing assignments. CU offers students free printing each semester up to 500 copies.

MEMORIAL LAWN "THE QUAD" A college campus isn't complete without a central meeting spot. Memorial Lawn, also known as 'The Quad', connects CU's main campus. From intramural activities like flag football to goat yoga, the lawn is where you see CU come to life. And weather permitting, Commencement is held on the lawn at the end of the academic year. The Quad brings all of CU together.

STUDENT LIFE Lots of student life activities happen on the quad. Sports, corn hole, goat yoga, and festivals will fill your calendar while at CU.

FAIRS & EVENTS The quad offers the perfect space for an outdoor student organization fair. Several community events happen throughout the year including a special visit from the Nashville Symphony.

LOUNGE & CONNECT On those bright sunny days when there's a breeze, grab a blanket and a couple of friends to make the perfect day.Â

HEART OF THE PHOENIX CU has a storied history of resilience and transformation. From the very ashes of the Civil War, CU rose like the Phoenix and evolved into a leader in higher education. The Phoenix is our university mascot and is prominently featured as a beautiful fire pit on the plaza in front of Memorial Hall. Known as 'The Heart of the Phoenix', this firepit is used during our Convocation ceremony each year and is a frequent place for students to gather and share laughs, memories and even some marshmallows.

CONVOCATION : THE HEART OF THE PHOENIX TRADITION

Every year at the Convocation ceremony, students, faculty and staff are asked to write down any fears or

concerns

they

have

about

the

upcoming

semester, and are then asked to commit them to the

flame.

In

doing

this,

we

believe

we

are

stronger than the trials we may face and will rise to meet our greatest potential.

IT'S TIME TO RISE Our focus is fixed on the future, and we hope you can see yourself here at CU. Cumberland is a place where you can belong. We strive to know all our students, not just by name, but by their interests, goals, and dreams. And while our campus may have lots of buildings and classrooms, it is our students who make us who we truly are. Their optimism and determination remind us why we exist.
