Get Schooled with

School House Rock! Lilith Kocian, Deck 7

This year, Culver Summer School will be performing the musical School House Rock Live! Jr. by Andrew Llyod Webber. Directed by Mr. and Mrs. Coven, this production is a fun way to educate people of all ages through song and dance. Because this show is shorter in time length, the actors of this production will be able to learn it in a small time frame. There are thirty-six campers in total, five are Upper

School students, including Rowan Conway, Addison Marshall, Kaikeyi Paxton, Valeria Prida-Seifer, and Justin Tidd. The rest of the thirty-one campers are Woodcrafters. The Upper School students who have done the musical program since they were Woodcrafters have improved over the years in not only singing, but with how comfortable they are on stage as well. Doing this program can not only help someone’s confidence on and off stage, but it is also another great way to meet people with similar interests. The performance this year can entertain anyone of all ages and Culver looks forward to the show. The production will be performed July 25th at 7:30 P.M. in Eppley auditorium.

Attention Third Classmen Coming Attractions

Kevin Dagvadorj, AVA

The first time you come to Culver there are two things you notice 1. There is little to no air conditioning, and 2. No one sleeps under the covers. But as Culver helps you grow you begin to realize that it’s all very competitive too. This competitive spirit is part of the Culver experience and can be seen throughout everything you do, from a volley ball game to the military banner. But this competitive spirit explodes at the end of the year when Pegasus, the Great Race, and Comm. Relay take place. You may have heard about these spectacular competitions that display the strengths and weakness of every unit but there is so much to each challenge. First there is the Comm. Relay short for the Communications Relay. This relay incorporates all the aspects of being in a naval unit including sailing, communications, wherries, crew and even more. All of the naval units have to try their hardest to beat the others. It all comes to a dramatic and suspenseful finale when the entire crowd goes silent as each naval unit competes in the last event of communications, crypto, semaphore, and code flags. Then comes the Great Race which showcases the physical endurance and teamwork of each deck. The Great Race is launched with a crew race that determines when your bucket brigade begins (a bucket brigade is a group of people filling up a garbage can by passing and filling up buckets from the lake). As soon as the deck finishes filling up the garbage can they move on to sailing, communications, paddle boarding, wherries, rifle, archery, and cross country running to each of those events. The most intense part of the Great Race is the crew race that determines when you start and the intense bucket brigade that requires all the endurance of each deck. Last but definitely not least is Pegasus which pits the air/cav battalion against each other. Pegasus is a perfect name since the air/cav battalion is made up of the Aviation unit and Troop unit and when you mix flying and horses you get Pegasus, a winged horse from Greek mythology. Pegasus is full of difficulties ranging from brain twisters to a truck push. But it all starts off with a performance from each unit’s drill team showcasing their precision and team work as they demonstrate military commands and coordination. Then there are puzzles, rifle, archery, cross country running, and so many more intense competitions but it all ends in an enduring truck push to the finish line. Although there are still two weeks until these fierce competitions, the wait is worth it all when the winners jump in the lake and feel all the glory of winning and receiving salutes from all the other units.

Culver Hacks

Jessie Morgan, Deck 7

Regardless of who you may be, everyone has their own Culver hack. Similar to a life hack, a Culver hack is a way of making something easier for oneself during the summer, whether it happens within the barracks, in ranks, or out on campus. Here are some campers’ favorite hacks. “Sleep without moving.” – Karla Medina, Deck 4 “I use toothpaste to polish my belt buckle.” – Tavaun

Hinds, AVA

“Use a clipboard to tuck in your sheets = perfection!” – Julia Bauer, Deck 1 “I just put athletic shorts under my boat shorts and whoosh... I get changed for classes in seconds.” –

Diana Cedeno, Deck 7

“Put a hanger by the window to dry your clothes.” –

Brandon Simmons, Naval 3

“I use chai tea, French Vanilla, and half-and-half to make a ‘chai tea latte’.” – Maddie Heath, Deck 2 “Use your broom to line up your shoes.” – Jon

Bradbury, AVA And finally,

“Hide everything in your closet for P.I.” – Sam

Bialek, Deck 2

What is your Culver hack?

Why Military School? Isabela Barahona, Deck 2

Although we all consider Culver our second home, we all have different stories that bring us here. Every summer, Culver campers come from all around the world and arrive at camp with a unique reason behind their enrollment in a military summer school. Why do you go to a military school? “Because I like to waterski.” -Maxwell Tu, Naval 5 “Because I learn the true skills of having leadership and how to always think of others’ needs before my own.” -Isabella Mateos, Deck 4 “It’s not the military part that is important, but rather the friends I have there that do make it important.” -Juergen Znebur, Naval 4 “Because its home.” -Jared Gidley, AVA “Why not? It’s a whole new environment filled with activities that are out of my comfort zone.” -Andres

Kattan, Naval 2

“I tell them that I came here because I want to get to know people from all around the world and to get discipline.” -Alejandro Ahuage, Naval 5 “It helps you grow as a person and helps you mature.” -Maria Carla Gutierrez, Deck 7 “I wanted to learn leadership and have a good and successful future, I also want Steve Jobs to see it on my resume and take me in since I have experience.” -Brandon Simmons, Naval 3 “Because its awesome here, and I can do so much and have so much fun, but I also get taught responsibility. I learn to be serious and have fun. It helps you grow as a person.” -Alexandra Orandin, Deck 7 “I stole someone’s hamster and this is my punishment.” -Heidi Wash, Deck 7

Comfort Zone A Zone that Culver a breaks

ruins us all place that that Comfort Zone Hashem Abdelati, N4

Something New Zahrah Alias, Deck 4

Too much of something new can be daunting Especially if you’re a nerd, never went to Woodcraft, and are good at nothing. Crypto, Crew, SOP’s, and ATV’s? Half asleep because you were up at 4 AM trying to make your bed a million times. Knees aching tremendously as you march and don’t understand why you just can’t seem to pivot Completely out of my comfort zone. I just want to go home. But every “left” I begin to take, I would get stronger, better at being more open-minded. Now as my eyes move to the “right” on the review line, I am reminded of all the friendships, progress, and memories I have made. To think - I was so afraid but stayed - and had the best summer ever!

ZORRO Lili Chalfant – Deck 7

Powerful hooves fall to the ground His fiery breath calms my every nerve It’s as though I am awakened with the sound My hands slide down his back, memorizing every curve His voice is stronger than any instrument could master His head resembles the embodiment of pride There is no one like him that could go faster No weapon could crush his stride He collapses into himself with every breath

Where I Belong Olivia Moore, Deck 4

Returning was a good thing. At least I think it was. This place being my second home and all. You would think it was the best choice. TURNS OUT IT WAS. Things happen here that are so hard to explain to the ones who have not experienced the Culver life. Trying new things, making new friends. Even laughing until you can’t breathe. Doing these things with the ones you LOVE. Culver is where my family is. To leave after six weeks breaks me to pieces, but I know one day I could return and be welcomed with open arms. To one place where you can’t and won’t be judged for how crazy or weird you are. CULVER IS HOME.
